May I propose: ex boyfriends au. Neil and Andrew go back in time per usual, but they arrive together at the beginning of Neil's recruitment to palmetto. They agree that for now, they should keep it low key and not change much in fear of making the future worse. But, they come to find out that repeating your life exactly the same way is BORING. So, they decide to spice it up a bit. In order to explain their familiarity to the foxes, they create this awfully dramatic backstory full of twists and betrayals, where neil met Andrew while he was with Cass and then Andrew did something to land them both in Juvie, and maybe in juvie they betrayed each other or smthn. All of its fake but the foxes eat it up. Neil and Andrew even incorporate song lyrics that haven't been made into fake arguments that they have for fun (strawberry ice cream in Malibu don't act like we didn't do that shit too) and the foxes fully believe that they're ex boyfriends. But even they can't fully hide the affection they have for each other and when that bleeds through the fixes think they're witnessing the best second chance trope when in reality they're just fucking around

This is such a funny concept.

I am going to add one thing though. In this AU Neil and Andrew made it all the way to their 90s. They went to sleep in their bed old, in love, and happy together. They've both been getting more and more tired lately, they know what's coming. They've seen it with their friends. It's fine, whatever the next step is they're going to go together. If one leaves a little early, well they've had years to get patient while waiting for the other to catch up.

They pass together and their great grand nephew (Kevin's) finds them the next morning (he'd been staying with them to help with a few things. They're holding hands.

They find themselves in the immediate aftermath of Andrew having driven an Exy racquet into Neil's stomach. There's a moment where Andrew truly panics because "OH FUCK, WHAT IF I RUPTURED HIS COLOSTOMY BAG?" and then oh he never really forgot how Neil looked (Neil had been the one that needed the reminders about things) but seeing his husband at 18 with brown hair, wire thin frame, and brown eyes? It throws him off even if he'd know Neil no matter what hair color or eye color.

Kevin comes up and it's been almost 10 years since he'd died but he's there young, no liver spots, and with a 2 on his face again.

They have long been able to talk to one another without a single word. Now that Andrew's face has full range of motion again (partial stroke 3 years before) it's even easier.

"So this is where you ran off to?" Andrew demands.

"Oh, like I had a choice after what you pulled!" Neil shoots back.

Cue two old fucks who are now in the prime of their life bodies and when they lost a lot of their mobility with age the thing they had most loved to do was fuck with their numerous grand nieces and nephews (I am stating right here that every fox who has a kid FULLY views Andreil as uncles so it does not matter if there is a blood relation).

Neil and Andrew rarely need to lie about the shit they've gotten up to, it just hasn't happened yet. They only make it like 2 weeks MAX pretending like they're mad at one another. They've slept in the same bed holding hands for 70 years. They don't do well when they're separated and Andrew is on that god awful medication but this time they know the medical expert who can argue about how BAD this whole shit show is and they know the lawyer to hire. Neil might dip heavily into his stash money but they know more than enough to make that cash back.

Andrew off his meds almost a whole year early via an outpatient treatment.

Still they keep referencing some insane past. "I'll say sorry for getting us thrown in Juvie when YOU apologize for lighting the car on fire in the first place!" he huffs.

"Then I guess we're at a standstill."

These arguments are had while they are absolutely all over one another because a bunch of parts of theirs just WORK again and that's super fun for both of them. They seem like Seth & Allison 2.0 with 8x the history but Neil makes Andrew act like a human and not a monster so they're all very invested in the relationship working out.

This past is also NEVER elaborated on but they never fuck up the fabrication of it either. Andrew because his perfect memory and Neil because even decades later he is a super tier liar.

They're having fun, it's sort of like being back with all their grand nieces and nephews except it's all of their friends (+Seth). The Original Foxes were long used to Neil & Andrew's shit so it was impossible to mess with them like this.

They're going to have a blast.

i got souyo brainworms again and i gotta share some thoughts i have

this ones a long one so ill put a 'keep reading' thing here just in case yall dont wanna scroll past a wall of text

basically some headcanons about a healthy mix of chad narukami and normal yu, injecting loads of gap moe into this guy

(and it eventually devolves into some weird semi-story because my brains really spiralling here)

okok so, hear me out, chad narukami isnt that bad as an idea...? maybe as a more calm iteration, just another layer to yu

in the p4 manga, we get to see some of yu's backstory. (its been a while since ive read it so i might get some details wrong but) his parents are very busy people, always working and moving around, so yu's always moving around with them

because of this, hes a very independent but also lonely kid. poor guy doesnt talk much with his own mom and dad, and he never really have a good enough chance to form lasting friendships

so when he moves to inaba and starts making friends there, hes like 'oh i really want to keep these guys around...' so he starts putting up a bit of a persona (hah), some cool, unfazed guy that everyone can rely on thinking thats what people might like more. to his credit, it works pretty well, but its a bit stifling for yu himself. hes never had this many friends though, so he'll keep it up

we all know yosuke admires him quite a fair bit as is, just as a dependable friend and a strong leader. he looks up to yu in these aspects, thinking hes basically the perfect guy. (and lets never unpack that thought.) talented, charming, 'gets all the ladies', that kind of stuff

at some point its just the two of them, maybe walking home from school or something, yu gets pretty comfortable and his facade slips a little. maybe he says something completely silly, or heavens forbid theres a stray cat along the road! ("awww look at the little guy, cmeree, pspsps- oh- ahem- uh, its pretty cute...") it surprises yosuke quite a bit. he's thinking about it a lot as they part ways, it was... definitely a new side to his partner, but its also not a bad thing...

after that, yosuke starts noticing more small things about yu. whenever he invites anyone to share his lunch, its always something they like. whenever the IT are talking, he makes sure no one feels left out. he likes cats, a lot more than hes willing to show, and he loves nanako a whole lot too. his partner's... a bit of a softie under that calm and collected vibe, isnt he?

(alternatively, it'd be really funny if the entire IT knew? like "yeah, hes got a straight face all the time and sparkles fly around him whenever he strikes a pose, but hes got a dedicated schedule for hanging out with us and hes always asking when we're free. hes a big puppy, really.")

anyways, yosuke tries to encourage him to show more of this other side of him. stuff like "c'mon, we'll think you're cool either way!" and yu at first is a little hesitant, so yosuke suggests he just try it out with him

he feels some pride about it, because hes the first to learn about this side of yu! his partner trusts him the most, hes the most comfortable around him! (whats this strange other feeling? hm. dont like that.)

yu takes a little more time with the others, but theyre very welcoming about it nonetheless. specifically, they find it very charming! (making cute shapes in your bento? sewing cute stuffed toys with kanji? playing with literally every single stray cat you lay your eyes on? hell yeag.)

of course the facade doesnt completely shatter, because some parts of it are still true to yu. its just that he'll now crack the dumbest joke youve heard in your life with the same old straight face

(aaand now to derail for the sappy stuff huhuhu)

because yosuke's usually the first to be exposed to whatever new shenanigans yu's up to, eventually he starts getting some... weirder things. he brings some of it up to the other IT members and he looks insane, like:

"what? he hasnt been giving you guys origami?"

"why would he? i mean itd be cool, but thats just his part-time job isnt it? hes probably sick of paper cranes!"

"cranes... haha, yeah..." (as he thinks about the row of stupid paper animals sitting on his windowsill)

yu over time starts getting real sweet with yosuke, and he kind of gets the feeling he should just... keep this to himself...? especially when he doesnt see him acting this way with anyone else, and a small part of him wants to keep it to himself. all of this, just for him.

but that would be kind of gay, wouldnt it? hes not gay, is he...? he gets pretty happy whenever yu smiles at him, whenever he does something for him, but its just because he appreciates him as his partner... right?

eventually it all comes to a head when yu invites him to that... that spot high up in inaba. (ykno the one, its got the railing and shit.)

yosuke's climbing the hill, wondering whats yu gonna tell him, and at the top he sees him already waiting there as the sun's about to set on a nice breezy day

he kinda jokes a bit about it, like "damn did you ask me to come here now for the atmosphere?" but yu's strangely quiet

so they kinda just stand in a bit of an awkward silence before yu clears his throat... and confesses to yosuke.

...

they just. stare at each other for a bit. yosuke's at a loss, heat slowly rising in his cheeks, because what the hell?

and then yu explodes into a flustered mess, bumbling about "hey yeah man you dont have to accept if you dont wanna, i was just saying things yknow? you dont really have to-"

yosuke cuts him off, sighing a little. he tells him its okay, hes kinda had a feeling he felt the same way but he wasnt ready yet... and now his partner's confessing to his face, he cant really put it off anymore, can he?

("by the way, did you plan this? like, the timing and everything?"

"i... had a hard enough time saying 'i like you' with a straight face as it was, i kind of had to..."

"... ah.")

havent seen the official character descriptions from the banished trailer posted so Im putting them here

the keys on reptile's belt make me wonder if after leaving home he eventually became the jailer for shang tsung's flesh pits, as we saw him in the trailer when he came to talk to johnny and kung lao. That, or he's just a simple rogue/thief boy and those are merely his tools.

Also I was wrong, they ARE namedropping zaterra (but I mean why wouldnt they). They also note that while he was bullied, he left on his own rather than being thrown out. There's nothing in his description that could indicate if his human shapeshifting mutation was forced upon him, so maybe he was just born with it, but I cant shake the feeling that him with his human form, the tarkat disease, what's happening in outworld as a whole, and shang tsung are linked somehow. Plus him being called Zaterran "Slave" here.

I dont have much to say on ashrah, she looks like she is mostly keeping her original backstory. Maybe she and kenshi can bond over their special swords.

OH WE ARE SUPPOSED TO ROOT AGAINST HAVIK???

Him being from orderrealm is pretty interesting actually, I'll have to refresh my memory and lore on 3d era characters to know if its a new development or if it has always been his backstory. In any case, that means chaosrealm straight up doesnt exist here? Liu Kang wiped it out or smth? No way havik will have a major role in the story, but I bet his tower ending will have him create chaosrealm. Anyway based on this description, havik is MUCH MORE sympathetic than they'd let you think in the trailer.

Also its funny they named the reveal trailer for these three the "banished" trailer because none of them were banished from what we're told here, they sounds more like they want out themselves.

personal mphfpc recap since i finally finished reading all the books

spoilers for the entire mphfpc series ahead. this will mostly be me talking about the book's imperfections, because when i love a piece of media, i also love criticizing it to its core

so, i first read the books 1-4 in 2020 and i was SO obsessed!!?? i wasn't really into social media and fandom culture back then, so i didn't really have anyone to talk to about mphfpc and i remember being very sad about that. i also remember trying to make fanart of the characters, but i REALLY sucked at art back then and to this day i find old mphfpc drawings and cringe at them. maybe it's time to redraw some of those...

anyways, i read the fifth book when it first came out in germany and i kind of hated it lol. i was really rushing through it, because i couldn't wait for the fugh reunion. so i kind of missed out on the whole plot because i only cared about fiona and hugh.

basically, i recently finished rereading the books, because nostalgia or whatever and i'm kind of obsessed again. so...i'm just dumping some thoughts on the whole series here because on tumblr i can actually find ppl with mutual interests.

first of all there's literally SO MANY inconsistencies and plotholes?? what the actual fuck ransom riggs. idk how much of this is prevalent in the og books, because i mainly read the german translations, but sometimes riggs just forgets who hugh is i guess?? he mixes up his and horace's peculiarities once and at some point he is referred to as howard. who the fuck is howard. these are literally the most easiest mistakes to fix. does he not have an editor?

i'm not even gonna talk about the movie. i have a whole seperate post for it

it sometimes bothers me how only certain characters seem to serve a purpose. in every novel emma, enoch, millard and bronwyn are clearly the focus (besides jacob) despite the fact that the other characters are equally interesting and likeable. hugh, horace, claire, olive and obviously fiona are just NOT THERE for like the entirety of AMOD. are you kidding me

the entire second trilogy...is kind of a cashgrab. of course i'm happy we got more books and i liked them, but it's kind of obvious that the author simply had some pictures left and saw an opportunity to make some more profit out of them. that's not bad, but these books weren't necessary for the overall storyline.

the thing with the prophecy in DODA...the entire book was dedicated to finding the other lighteaters, but they don't really do anything in the end?? i kinda get why noor has to be the *main character*, but why introduce julius and sebbie when everything could have played out the same way without them?

julius and horace...is it really that hard to age julius down? it would've made that a lot less creepy. there is literally no reason for julius to so much older than horace. not sure if this could be considered queerbaiting, since i don't know a lot about that topic. would be grateful if anyone elaborated more on that.

hugh and fiona are still my favorite thing about these books THEY ARE PERFECT IN EVERY WAY AND DESERVED SO MANY MORE SCENES UGH. i don't need another jemma kiss i need FUGH. there is just so much potential and plus, we never really get to learn about their backstories?? like we know that they're from the 1840s, so how did they get into a loop a century later?

how was fiona able to *whisper* to hugh in DODA, she literally had her tongue cut out, hello?

so many characters with lots of potential either die or just disappear. lilly, sam, althea, peter-and-joel...ring any bells??

ok i'm sorry

the photos are so funny sometimes, because at times there will be a photo of, say, emma and in the next book there will be another picture of her and she just looks like a different person. because,obviously, that's a photo of a different person. but apparently, ransom thinks we're too dumb to notice that.

i would just love it if there'd be storylines that focused on each character individually, because again, WASTED POTENTIAL

ricky deserved to have a comeback, i feel like this is general fandom consensus

introducing v, just to kill her off? idk man

despite all of these criticisms i just made, i fucking cherish these books

since pjo gets a new awesome reboot i think we deserve one too

i also wish the fandom was bigger but maybe it's a good thing that it's kind of niche. i don't know.

bee and puppycat! i can even mimick puppycats voice hehe (if you haven't seen it, puppycat makes mechanical beep sounds, sorta like animal crossing noises instead of talking) i just find the concept of it charming, a girl who feels isolated from everyone else finding a magical little pet that takes her on grand adventures. the subtleness of its commentary i find really appealing. also if we're just talking about aesthetics it's all soft colors and stars, very pretty and very my thing.

Laios:My husband like we're literally getting married i love him so much. I think people overexaggerate his weirdness and flatten his character in a very frustrating way like that which makes me sad because hes genuinely such an interesting and refreshing protagonist in a way where like he just does his own thing the whole time he doesntcare . AND he loves his friends and food and monsters life is beautiful and also he may become a king which is pretty awesome. I fucking love him bro i do wish he was a freak more often though to be honest because its funny but you know i hate fanon him for that reason too though so

MARCILLE: I LOVE HER SO MUCH SHES WONDERFUL SHES SO CUTE AND SMART AND COOL I LOVE GIRLS LIKE HER THAT ARE LIKE idk how to describe her character but its good guys. I think her fear of death and losing her loved ones is really interesting and i really like her dream sequences and stuff like that. i love when the rest of the group comforts her its very cute. i think one of my favorite moments with her is when laios comforts a kid version of her in her dream or when she was done using everyones dead bodies against the rabbits and brought them back to life and broke down about it that was soooo. Omfg i fucking love marcille. also shout out to marcilles succubus she has my taste fr. Oh Also shout out to laios's succubus that looked like a crazy beast version of her that was awesome. Also her relationship with falin is so forgive me for saying this word but "wholesome"

ive never watched any indiana jones movie

but since theres a new one coming out i thought about binging them all to see if i like the saga enough to go to the theater

these are some of my disjointed thoughts as i watch them. there was a lot of oooh so thats where thats quote/meme is from

lost ark.

its set in the 30s?? if youd ask me id have guessed 60/70s. wait he steals artifacts from other cultures to sell to museums???? i thought he was like a big hero jgdfjhggjh. marion started lowkey as a badass but by the end she was like all over the place,,, was it the trauma. she couldnt catch a breath and kept screaming all the while. man shallam was right, not a single brain between all these nazis. indiana's little grunts are so funny. locations are cool but theres like a million extras, this must have been kinda hell to film. id seen a total of three scenes from this movie: the idol and boulder, the ark lightning up, and this man just shooting sword guy because the actor was tired or something. also interesting way to end the movie lmao

'i got stung by a huge scorpion!!' me: 'youll be fine the bigger the better'. indy 2 seconds later: 'the bigger the better' me: :D!! oh shit marion is here. mutt is HIS SON??? indy: 'all these women had something in common' me: '...they werent you?' indy: 'they werent you' me: :D!! oh man these action sequences are so ridiculous and go on forever lmao. what. what were these people doing inside the walls and columns, just waiting for intruders?? oh shit alien corpses. anyway this mac dude gonna get killed so hard. gurl all the knowledge ever is like, too much, its gonna kill you. aaaaaaaand it just did. i can excuse an alien ship being buried underground for millenia but i draw the line at these two dumbasses marrying after all, like whats the point of getting married sigh (im bias). i do like that there being aliens was never questioned too much by the characters. i appreciate this a lot

it just dawned on me that one of the boxes in area 51 broke and showed the ark from movie 1 and it was never acknoweleged in the rest of the film. huh

ok let's go. tumblr user zaggyzoo currently watching dramas recap (or whatever):

love in contract (ep. 9): as we say in italy, this is just fried air. i feel like every episode progressively gets worse, but not even in a "this show is Bad" way, it's just sooo mediocre. to me. mediocre premises, mediocre characters, mediocre plots, mediocre love triangle that i hoped we had left back in 2017. every episode i feel like nothing happens at all and I can't wait for it to end and i think the reason i didn't drop it yet is bc it's the only show that isn't on fri/sat/sun. and tbh things do happen, the problem is that they're all things you could've guessed from the third episode and they're just. not up to the quality of the type of drama it wants so badly to be. djjdjdjd wow sorry i don't even hate it but it's just sooo mediocre.

one dollar lawyer (ep.8): my bestie <33 love this show wow. they had a bit of a too long and emotional heavy two-episodes backstory that could've have been maybe managed differently but i get why it was necessary and now we're back to the silly antics soo I can't wait to see the new episodes!! it's genuinely so funny and it even made me think the courtroom scenes were soo fun to watch. made me think of while you were sleeping, which i loved watching so 🙏 that's high praise hfhdjdh

the golden spoon (ep.5): wow i'm three episodes behind on this helppp i do enjoy watching it (even though it has its flaws) but i never feel like starting an episode. helppp it feels like a chore even though i want to catch up. so uhm sjhdhdhdh but anyway i think this is very korean in themes, I don't think this story could work in any other context quite as well. and i also like how sungjae character is an interesting protagonist, as in, interesting how his character is, considering the usual role of a protagonist and its relationship with the viewer (that makes sense to me sorry). but in contrast I don't quite like how they didn't give the same treatment to yeojin as a villain 🤥 but maybe it's too early to talk (i hope)

gaus electronics (ep. 6): soooo silly djjdjd <3 the comedy is so slapstick and i think sometimes it could be finer, to be funnier. like for my tastes, it doesn't make me laugh out loud the whole episode, but i AM entertained for a good portion of it so 😌👍 also better kiss scene than most romantic dramas rn like 🙏😳🙌 and the 45 min format is really fitting

under the queen's umbrella (ep.2): this just started so 👁️ but i missed watching a period drama so much sooo i want to enjoy it fjjfjf gye seong must be protected at all costs 😭 btw actually surprised they went there! like i called it, at the end of first episode, but still ! i hope they're respectful and treat it with dignity and respect and the preview of next ep it looks like it but i'm still scared a bit 🤥 anyway why did i think it was a comedy when I start it fjfjfj also chani mean girl slay

may i help you (ep.2): the happines-park-hyungsik-ification of lee junyoung.... 😳😌🙌☺️🙏😼😖 sooo glad to see him act with hyeri, and it looks like a good one?? i'm shook. the start was a bit confusing but I think it was intentional, and i was then pretty neutral about the show but in the second episode there's a scene that is just soooo cute and made me think. oh this is good i enjoy this ! junyoung comedy king tbh. ALSO interesting how kdramaa usually like to have older actors with younger actresses, while he's often paired with older actresses à la lee jaewook 👁️ they do have the same charm i think... tbh while watching alchemy of souls i did think junyoung could do that role too so fjfhjfjf (love jaewook btw no hate 😭) OH ALSO it's so funny always to me to see how different catholicism is in korea from here lmaoo and i guess I don't really get how it ties in with the supernatural aspect of this show, that part leaves me a bit 🤔 but it's probably also too soon so we'll have to see

It's quite funny that sort of what I'm immediately assuming about the depiction of fairytale storytelling this volume is that it's cynical about the whole thing (because it's what I'm used to) but the alternative interpretation is that instead of being aimed at someone like me who is already on the side of, you know, narrative, and sympathetic to the depiction of the villains in the story, the idea that there are incomplete pictures of the conflict and you need the other side, or some other interactive experience to understand it is the sort of perfect thing to complement any sort of Cinder redemption and indeed even Salem. It still perfectly functions with the notion that fairytales are 'real' (and what are the consequences therein? What happens to the dragon? Who has to be the bad guy?) which is what I've otherwise interpreted.

I still think it's premature to make any bold statements until the end of this volume - but I think it's quite telling that at the halfway point we get the reveal of Jaune (with some special forbidden knowledge) but it's not necessarily the complete picture, either, because if it were, he would've figured a way out, and not be, well, cursed - physically (albeit aged and having lost his life) competent yet spiritually broken. He has the 'practical' answers - the sort of practical interpretation that breaks the intuitive space in storytelling, the sort of cynical 'and this is the way stories work and that's that, anyway let's move on' sort of amusement park ride-esque interpretation - but he doesn't have the actual answers. Which means that the flatly evil interpretation of the illusory Ever After is probably not all correct, either, and on a more epic scale I have to wonder if this is in any way connected to what we know, or don't know, about the villains in the story, and the circuitous, ceaseless conflict with Salem. Because you can't kill her. So I imagine this volume probably has something to do with setting up what the actual resolution is (especially as it's realised through other character arcs and redemptions).

My immediate inclination is to assume an approach of cynicism because it's what I'm used to storytelling doing (even inadvertently; cynicism is sort of held as being a type of realism, whilst idealism is for babies) and so that does really colour my interpretation, particularly when we're halfway through the volume where a few of the characters have spent time lampshading why fairytales are silly (which is quite telling when they were treating the experience like a series of steps to follow), and particularly when I'd say the popular attitude is that fairytales are silly, and with this type of thing people always want to make some sort of attempt at incisive commentary whilst not really understanding what they're talking about (case in point: people who insist fairytales are sexist and regressive and that female-driven narrative is uncommon - which ignores women-influenced oral histories and, you know, a great deal of worldwide and historical traditions).

So I'm still reserving judgement, but I think it's interesting there's the potential for an optimistic understanding of the missing side of the story (case once again in point: Cinder's hidden backstory from the main cast; Salem's actual emotional experience of her backstory and not merely its practical relation, and Ozma's too) when I initially held it to be something that was trying to make some sort of propagandistic statement about the way fairytales work, obfuscating truth or something.

Princess of Defense

During the Dora Milaje's ambush of the French forces at the Ansongo Outreach Center, Aneka shows off two electrified daggers that were made for her by Shuri. In fact, the Dora Milaje seem to be sporting plenty of new upgrades, electrified spears, shields, etc. All of these presumably made by Shuri. It's only after I've seen that scene a few times that I've really let how aweome that is sink in. Taking the Blip into account, Shuri is still essentially a teenager and at this point, has been at the forefront of Wakanda's military technology for almost two decades.

It's interesting to think about that in contrast to Shuri's title as princess. This has always been the case, but in Wakanda Forever, that title seemed to carry more weight. Shuri is referred to as 'Princess' or "The Princess' a lot in this movie. From a logistical perspective, this makes a lot of sense. It's a shorthand for her title and the characters are not just connected personally, but as professional servants of the government or are related dignitaries to the government. Okoye is a general, M'Baku is essentially a noble and most likely to the rest of the world, Shuri is mostly known by her title, if not her genius. However, the positioning of how people are saying the word seems to be designed to play up the classical idea of a princess; that of a young, vulnerable, kind, and possibly naive young woman. Something along the line of a fairy tale princess. I feel like this starts early with Okoye and Ramonda's discussion about whether Shuri should go on the mission to find Riri. Okoye refers to her as 'the princess' as both women discuss what's best for Shuri essentially without her.

I believe that there's a more subtle version of this going on in Boston, with the police demanding that 'Princess Shuri' essentially surrender to a foreign power as if she has no choice (to be fair, they're asking that of General Okoye as well). There's the striking bit where Griot refers to her as the princess to Okoye while she was unconscious, and then the staging of the scene where she asks Attuma and Namora for parley with Namor seemed staged to highlight a certain powerlessness on her part. When Ramonda dresses down Okoye later, she speaks of Shuri not as a warrior in distress, but as a captured princess, which is a sentiment she repeats when asking Nakia to rescue her (very fairytale princess!)

I think this sets the audience up for Riri's funny comments about the special outfit and calls out the captured damsel trope in other movies. All of which I believe puts us into the mindset of how Namor seems to see her upon their first real meeting. I think that Namor starts with a clear charm offensive on Shuri because all he really knows about her is her title, and probably what he can usually expect from women holding that title. No doubt he probably surmised that she was brave and protective of Riri, but may have also misjudged her as naive and easily swayed. The bracelet, the backstory, the 'Whole New World' tour of Talokan are all a part of that.

However, in the middle of that, Shuri proves surprising. She quickly identifies the timeline of the bracelet, that his mother was human, is eager to see his nation and even seems to have an understanding of vibranium and its properties that he didn't expect. She understands what he has to protect and admires his work in doing so, but isn't willing to let that sway her in her defense of Riri and challenges him to come to a peaceful solution. This, in turn forces him into a different tact and start discussing a larger alliance between the two, something that he wouldn't do with a person with no authority.

It is in this moment that I believe Namor sees Shuri beyond the label of a princess and as an intelligent, clear-eyed, and determined young woman, and we are encouraged to do the same. It's why we're on her side when she wants to save her captors as she's getting rescued. We too know that this means war. From here on out, the idea of Shuri as a helpless fantasy princess is fully replaced with Shuri as a powerful and determined intellect, one who can be extremely dangerous to the world should she give into despair.

And when you think back, this has always been the case. So when Okoye and Ramonda were deciding what was best for Shuri, she piped up to show that she was both listening and had already decided to go; when the police were calling on her to surrender, she was already hatching a plan to escape that freed her from even Okoye; while Namor was putting on a charm offensive, she was gathering information and making a case. In that particular way, it wasn't Shuri that changed, rather it was our and everyone's perception of Shuri that did.

Which brings us full circle back to those weapons. Because those weapons represent who Shuri has always been; a pragmatic thinker who looks at the world with a clear-eyed, but empathetic practicality. Those weapons weren't lethal, but they were effective and many of her designs are powerful, but rarely offensive. They are the weapons of the protector she has always been, long before she entered the suit.

With a video game which seven is would the confrontation of Mia and Ethan and they talk about her past fit? would it not break the pacing they were working so hard to maintain and achieve?

Ethan (and the audience of course) does get some answers to his questions but not all of them (RE9 Mia centric) doesn't he?

and with the Baker Incident Report i am never not going to be mad they chose that clunky bullshit of everything (though i do find it funny if you compare what we knew of the connections before and after the baker incident report)

I feel like you're asking a lot of questions already answered in the post you're referring to. But it's a long post, so what the hell - let's see if I can summarise down further.

I've already covered the idea a real confrontation over Mia's secrets might not "fit" by suggesting an easy solution: just let Ethan find Mia's diary on his way out of the ship! Give us a bunch of entries dated to different months and years, summarising how Mia wound up working for the Connections and how she felt about it. At the end, you can have Ethan exclaim, "Mia… I had no idea…" or something. Congrats! You've fixed the problem! Ethan now knows Mia's secrets, and the ending implies he's forgiven her. It's not ideal, but it's still a fuckload better than what we got.

But the idea there was no better way to resolve this in a genre-appropriate manner just shows a lack of imagination. So here's one quick, off-the-top-of-my-head outline for how it could have gone down in RE7, with relatively minimal changes to the existing narrative.

When Ethan and Mia are separated in the swamp, Ethan isn't immediately sucked into the mould. On the ship (either with the player in control, or off-screen, while Mia's exploring), he discovers what Mia was really doing there, and gets angry. They meet up again, he confronts her, they argue briefly, she makes excuses, and THEN Ethan gets sucked into the mould and disappears.

Now Mia's quest to rescue him and her willingness to sacrifice herself to save him has been (even more) explicitly framed as her atonement. Their reunion on the chopper has been reframed as him forgiving her. Stripped to its minimum requirements, that's asking for one more scene with maybe a dozen lines of dialogue to be added to the game. You could almost do that with a mod, if you were determined enough. (Better yet, you could do all that and then let Ethan find Mia's diary, to flesh out her backstory some more).

But if you're really, really determined to leave Ethan in the dark, well, here are some ways I've already suggested to make that work, all achievable with maybe a few different lines of dialogue in the ending sequence:

Tell us Ethan's convinced himself Mia's memory is gone for good

Imply that Ethan's gone directly into denial, refusing to face anything that might threaten his ‘happy ending’ with Mia

Imply that Eveline wiped his suspicions about Mia away in a misguided attempt to do her a favour

etc

What we're really talking about here isn't a matter of whether Ethan and Mia needed a big emotional confrontation over her secrets, it's a matter of set-up and payoff. The whole game sets up that Ethan wants answers, and Mia wants to come clean. If they didn't want Ethan to ever find out the truth, they didn't have to tell us (SO MANY TIMES!) that he's suspicious of Mia, and has been since long before she disappeared. This could be as minor as, eg, taking his line from the boat: "You had something to do with this, didn't you? I just want the truth." and framing it as more of a question: "How did you even get involved in all this?" You don't have to have him tell Zoe both "I knew Mia was hiding something" and "I gotta know what Mia was up to." Let Zoe ask those questions, and Ethan brush them off. (Screencaps of all those scenes back on that original post, FTR.)

The point I keep coming back to is that watching Ethan abruptly go from "I know you had something to do with this" to "happy ending, no further questions your honour" left me going, "wait, WHAT?" the first time that ending played, and it's the single biggest thing that leaves me unsatisfied. It's still a great game, don't get me wrong, but it so easily could've been better.

Reading up about the development of RE7 does drive home that the whole approach was to start with vibes, then patch in a story around them later, which may lend some context as to how issues like this might have snuck through. Like I've said before, I don't even think that's a bad approach for a horror title like RE. Besides, RE7 is hardly the only entry in this franchise that opens with a clear thesis statement that it never really comes back to ‒ I've complained about similar issues in RE5, RE4R, RE3R, and Claire's side of RE2R too.

But RE7 still strikes me as a worse example because it spends so much more time reminding us that Ethan wants answers along the way. Clearly, this is an issue that bothers me more than many other fans. But I don't think it's unreasonable to point out just how many, easy ways there would have been to resolve it. The result is that poor Ethan gets so much crap for being dumb, while Mia gets treated like she's solely responsible for how both of them suddenly drop the subject at the 11th hour. When really, it's just the writing itself that really dropped the ball.

Go grocery shopping with - Milly!!! I wanna go grocery shopping with my sweet Milly! She'd be able to carry most of the groceries herself - most of which would be pudding cups, probably XD But she just seems like she would make anything fun, and she's always so cheerful. We could chat about our families and our jobs, and everything would just be so normal - even though she's anything but.

Have lunch with - I would love to get to taste whatever Izumi Curtis would make for lunch. I'd be a little scared of her, no doubt, but maybe if I just work hard at helping her cook and then wash dishes, she won't yell or anything. After all, I wouldn't be her pupil, so she'd probably be pretty kind. I would totally freak out if she coughed up blood while I was there, though :'(

Have coffee with - Ugh, this is going to sound like worst self-insert fic ever, but...Roy Mustang >///< I would be extremely flustered and tongue-tied, because he would turn up the charm and make it seem like we're on a date in a cute little cafe. But then it would become clear that it's a front for some mission, or the whole point is to pass along information or something like that. Which would be cool enough in its own way. But...you know...it would be really nice to hear his laugh and see him smile, even if he were faking it. We don't see near enough of that in canon.

Go thrift shopping with - I think it would be really fun (and funny!) to go thrifting with Vash XD It would be hilarious to watch his antics, and adorable to watch his fascination with like...children's toys, or antiques that remind him of somebody he used to know. And of course, Vash being Vash, we'd probably end up in a holdup or a shootout or something, which would suck, but at least I'd get to see his incredible gunslinging skills up close, and I know no one would get hurt. Except maybe him :(

Explore a museum/art gallery/aquarium with - Can you imagine going to an art gallery with a man who was alive when most, if not all, of the artists were alive? Maybe he even knew some of them personally! Hohenheim got around! Not to mention, there's probably some artists among the 536,329 souls inside him! He could explain all the interesting backstories and tidbits and artist's techniques that you don't get on the little plaque underneath the frame. And maybe he'd been to some of those places, and he could tell me whether it was an accurate depiction or not. What I'm saying is, Theophrastus Bombastus van Hohenheim would make the best tour guide ever. (This would also apply to a science or history museum, but for some reason my mind latched onto art instead.)

Go the library/bookstore with - Well, obviously I have to go to the library with Scieszka! She would know where all the best books are! Her recommendations would be so good! I bet I could give her a list of my favorite books, and she'd immediately grab a whole stack of books in the same vein that would last me the next year!

Have as a plus-one at a wedding - Okay, okay, fine. Legato would ask me to go with him to a wedding for some unfathomable reason, and I would say yes because I would be terrified not to, and then at the first opportunity, I would make an excuse to go to the bathroom, and then try to climb out a window and escape, except he'd probably figure out what I was trying to do and then kill me. Or force me to kill myself. Either way, it ain't gonna be pretty. Unless Vash gets wind of it and comes over from the thrift store and saves us all.

A review of If We're Being Honest by thequeenofwhump

I fucking love that the whole plot device is that literally no one can lie to each other. So many (way too many) fics are all about the slow-burn, and dragging out plot points and conflict, but this fic? Fuck it, no one can lie, everyone hooks up in the first chapter and everyone deals with their fucking emotions for once. Behold! Conversation! And problem-solving! And coping mechanisms! And unconditional emotional support! Look at it! It's beautiful!

The one thing I will say is that there's a lot of crying in this fic. Not that it isn't warranted, and it's stated in the fic that part of the reason why everyone is crying so much is because of the Truth Quirk Plot Device, but I feel like because everyone was crying so much, so easily, that it almost cheapened the emotion behind the scene. For some characters like Izuku or Ochaco, it's believable that they would cry more easily than some of the others, especially during certain scenes, but not everyone is like that. Some people can be highly emotional and empathetic and still not cry very much or very easily, but rather, they would show their emotions in other ways, like going quiet, going still, avoiding eye contact, tensing up, stuttering, etc. There are lots of different ways to display the same emotions so that you have a broader spectrum of emotional expression among characters. However, if you want to push the emotions or effectiveness of a scene, then I think it's perfectly reasonable and acceptable to have everyone cry, because you get a better sense that what's happening is really fucked up, because that one character never cries. But if you do exactly this every single time with every emotional scene, then it starts to lose some of its effectiveness.

Everyone was pretty decently in-character, and the internal dialogue and narration was honestly great and kind of hilarious. Character interactions were great, too

I like that everyone was dealing with different kinds of issues. They're all fucked up, but they're all fucked up in different ways, which made things feel a lot more organic. Naturally, since they're teenagers, a lot of them are going to have issues and trauma related to their parents, family, or home life, but that's not the case for everybody, because not everybody does have issues at home. A lot of kids have great home lives, and their issues have more to do with their intrapersonal intelligence and self-esteem and self-perception

Another gripe I have is the portrayal of Bakugou's home life; namely, that Mitsuki and Masaru are abusive. Now, I read this fic literal YEARS ago when I first got into the fandom, and this didn't bother me as much back then as it does now. Because, like, I get it: it's fanfiction, and there is no reason to adhere to canon. It's your story, so fuck the characters up as much as you want. But as time has gone by, the more it bothers me, because it feels like giving Bakugou abusive parents is less of a way to explore his character, and more of a way to side-step/excuse the shitty things he did in canon. It makes it an excuse as to why he doesn't have to atone for the things he did, because he was a victim of abuse too, which as we see in canon, is just not true. But also, fandom loves giving characters abusive or toxic parents for some goddamn reason, and as someone with an abusive father (and recently diagnosed PTSD because of it), I kinda just wish that that could stop. Not every character has to have an abusive home life, and not every character needs to have an angst-riddled tragic backstory. Is it not enough for characters to have a stable home life with issues that have precisely nothing to do with their parents? Does it have to be abusive parents every single time?

Marichat/Reverse Crush AU/How-stupidly-complex-can-we-make-the-love-square-until-its-incomprehensible AU/Or whatever the fuck you call this

It starts because Chat remembers Ladybug's voicemail asking if Marinette was "cute" way back with Evillustrator and snowballs with every dodged request for Multimouse on the grounds of "keeping her safe" since her "identity was known".

And Chat, as he's want to do, puts 2+2 together and gets fucking 23.

Now Chat thinks Ladybug is not only in love with Marinette, but has been secretly pretending to be in love with the famous oTheR BOy maybe to throw Chat off her scent, or maybe because she thinks he won't accept her, oh my god does she think he's homophobic??? What should he do???

Be a good friend and support her, that's what!

Meanwhile, Ladybug has been going through the 5-stages of grief thinking Chat has been scorned by Adrien Agreste at some point since every time she mentions the model Chat's response is increasingly hostile. At first she thought Chat hated Adrien, but all his comments seem to be critical of his inability to face conflict?? Or show his true feelings?? "Pretty boy" is said with such scorn that Ladybug (who is also the Anxiety-Catastrophic-inclining Marinette who regularly declares her own death at minor inconveniences and whenever she gets hit with her long list of secondhand embarrassments) has made up a whole backstory of how Chat is secretly bisexual and is using Ladybug to get over his horrific attempt at trying to express his feelings towards Adrien oh poor Chat she totally understands where you're coming from you poor kitty.

Cue Chat trying to wheedle out Ladybug's secret relationship with Marinette by making more comments about Multimous and how nice it was to do that mission with Marinette! Can he do it again? While also making more visits to her balcony to figure out why LB fell in love with his shy, awkward, yet brilliant classmate and oh god oh no she's actually really funny and sassy and way too cool for Chat or Adrien LB has fucking TASTE!!

(he also has been really emphasising his support for gay rights every time he hangs out with Ladybug (which isn't helping his 'secret pining bi' angle LB is frothing over) to the point where even local news outlets and the LadyBlog are debating whether Chat is queer af (which has always been a pretty firm belief in Paris, what with the leather outfit and hand gestures like ✨you know✨) or just pro-LGBT+)

On the other hand, Marinette has being trying to suss out this ""secret mean side"" of Adrien's that has made Chat into such a scorned lover, resulting in her being a little cooler to Adrien, which in turn has made her actually capable of speaking to him now he isn't some perfect figure on a pedestal.

("Plagg! Marinette frowned at me when I accidentally bumped into her today and told me to 'watch it, pretty boy' before leaving!!! She didn't stutter like usual, which I thought she did because she hated me, but what does this mean now????"

"That I'm not paid enough for this")

Except Chat has also been sniffing around her balcony a lot and she can't help but feel sorry for a fellow Adrien-Lover, so now she's been spending a lot of free nights with him and wow he's actually so sweet and shy beneath the flirty attitude and oh no he's actually kind of hot, and if Ladybug was the rebound from Adrien does that make Marinette a viable love interest??? W H A T???

This got away from me, but honestly we're at the point that it'd be so much funnier to make the lovesquare even more complex like yeah fuck it up you two dumbasses.
