Steve knew it was his fault Eddie was dead.

Steve was always the protector. He had been a protector since 1983 when he turned around and ran back into the Byers' house, facing off against what would not be his last interdimensional creature.

He had been a protector in 1984. He looked after those kids, he put them behind him, he protected them against demodogs and a much worse threat on Billy. He took bearings for them, kept them safe, kept them alive. He'd do anything for those kids, even now, he would try protecting them forever.

In 1985 he kept protecting. He made sure Dustin and Erica escaped. He made sure Robin stayed in that room while he was dragged out. He drove a car into another human being to save his friends. He went home alone knowing that even though Max had lost a brother, she was safe and alive.

Then 1986 happened.

When Dustin had come crashing into Family Video he tried to hide it but he was in protection mode. Code Red meant Code Red. But then he met Eddie. Steve wanted to protect Eddie. Eddie who treated him like an equal. Eddie who didn't think Steve was stupid. Eddie who smiled at him so brightly. Eddie who jumped into the lake for him. Eddie who gave him his vest. Eddie who cared about his kids. Eddie who went back into the Upside Down for them. Eddie who teased and flirted and laughed.

Eddie who was a distraction.

Eddie who pulled Steve's focus.

Steve couldn't be distracted and be a protector. He had to be focussed. He had to leave Eddie behind. Eddie would be fine. Steve would go towards the danger and Steve would protect everyone. Eddie was just a decoy, he'd be ok.

He'd see Eddie's smile again soon.

Steve had just wished it wasn't bloodstained.
