You know this man instantly fell in love with you

He first sees you at the sports festival and he was whipped, you didn’t care about the festival as much

But it was amusing and having gotten to the one-on-one battles with a quirk like yours it was surprising

He had seen how you steadily moved towards one of your opponents, before you were able to drastically pick up a guy who was a lot stronger than you and smash them down easily

It was easy but you were only good for hand to hand short, ranged combat so as soon as you were met with someone a lot stronger you were instantly out

Even then Kirishima admired you greatly and instantly needed to meet you

This baby loved how you presented yourself and just your carefree attitude and most of all he couldn’t lie and say you weren’t fucking attractive

Both of you met outside whilst the breaks were happening, and he struck up a conversation

You had always thought your quirk made you not as attractive as the other girls but Kirishima proved you wrong

You, for a long time hated how your ears stuck out but you always covered it with your hair, the horns that stuck out from your forehead which Kirishima adored and the little tail you had coming from your back

Everything about you was perfect and the first time he saw you in the UA uniform his mouth dropped

You asked to sit beside him, and my man obviously said yes for a little cutie like you

It was then that he saw the choker around your neck, a little bell hanging off it

His thoughts went wild and the hardening he was getting down below was not caused by his quirk

You both conversed and after a couple weeks became friends until he gained the courage to ask you out

You know this man went all out, bought you flowers, the whole lot and you had worn the tightest fitted dress that hit every single part of your body

He would come and pick you up from class and always have lunch with you

It was like you integrated so quickly into the group that nobody had even though you weren’t part of the original

Omfg helping Mina, Denki and Sero revise is the bain of your life but you loved them

But Kirishima would get jealous sometimes at how you adored his friends even Bakugo who would talk to you

But the soft smile Kirishima had of how in love he was with you was all that you needed to truly make you happy

“I promised I’d help them tonight.” You whisper sitting on Kirishima’s bed at the dorms, you finally were able to spend time with him after a week of studying but Mina had texted asking help to revise for their upcoming test.

“I haven’t seen you all week.” Kirishima pouted as your head was between his legs, his hands playing with your hair, often gliding up and down the two horns on your forehead.

“I know baby, but i promised.” You whisper you missed the boy as much as he did, but you felt bad for the dimwit of friends you both had.

He signed kissing your temple, “I’ll come and help.”

You smile softly getting up as you took of your UA shirt wanting to wear a hoodie that you would steal from the boy. You tugged it across your chest and his eyes were filled with love.

“How do you expect me to not fucking love you, when you come in looking like that.” He grins grabbing your waist to bring you into a soft kiss.

His mouth felt like heaven against yours and all you wanted was to remain in his arms. But the moment was ruined as quickly as it came, the sound of your phone ringing made both you let go and start to walk down to the communal area.

Holding hands, he’d occasionally kiss the back of your hand. It was a small gesture that made you melt underneath, “so what’s the problem?” You said as soon as Mina and Denki looked at you, their faces rising as if their savour had come or something.

“We don’t get maths.” Mina pouts showing the equations and formulas.

“I’m being replaced with maths.” Kirishima mutters sitting beside you whilst the two idiots looked confused as hell.

You tried to explain it in the best way, but it took a lot longer than you had expected. You were thankful Sero understood a lot more and was studying on his own because with these two it was taking too long. Kirishima just holding onto your thigh as if to make sure you will still with him, he looked tired and you regretted not spending time with him.

Trying your best to quickly wrap up, they for once finally understood and you softly whispered into Kirishima’s ear, “I’m all yours now.”

He smiled his arms instantly clinging onto you, as you both dragged your tired selves to his room. Along the way, Jirio spotted you about to come talk but instead seeing how attached Kirishima was, she refrained knowing you both needed some time for yourselves.

The whole way up, his arms never left you, his body was right against your back. As his lips trailed across your neck, “I love you.” He mutters sleepily.

“I love you too baby.” You whisper back, leaning your head against his shoulder, He wrapped his arms around your waist, loving every inch of you. Nuzzling himself into the crook of your neck to feel even more safe and secure but most of all to just feel you.

New Amsterdam Chapter 90

Peter ignored Dr. Stacey’s grumbles about how this project was nowhere near ready for human testing as he threw himself into getting everything as ready as possible. It hadn’t occurred to him, back when he first started helping her with the organic matrix, that it could potentially be used to replace actual organs. If this was viable, if it worked—it would revolutionize the medical industry. It could save Harry.

First though, they had to make it work. It had to be stable enough to hold its form, even when the structure itself was moving. It had to be able to move—there was no use in making a heart that couldn't beat. Then they had to figure out how to do all of that and make it work outside of the solution that they’d made and in the artificial plasma solution, to mimic blood.

“Peter, can I borrow you for a moment?” Peter looked up from his formulaic calculations to see Dr. Banner in the entryway to the lab.

Dr. Stacey glared at him. “He’s my assistant today!” she growled.

Dr. Banner held up both hands. “I’m not tying to steal your assistant,” he said as placating as possible, “I just need to show him something.”

“All right.”

Peter carefully marked his spot in the equations and made his way to Dr. Banner’s lab across the hall. “What is it?” he asked nervously.

Dr. Banner tapped his tablet and a display appeared on his screen. It was—Harry’s artificial heart? “I was examining your young friend, and yes—Pepper did explain the situation to me, when I found something interesting.”

“What is it?” asked Peter.

“The heart is perfectly functional. It doesn’t need a code to keep working,” Dr. Banner said calmly. He highlighted several tiny—protuberances? What were those for? A normal heart didn’t have those. “These,” Dr. Banner said in a vaguely grim voice, “are ports. They release neuroreceptors. Specifically, they release glutamate.”

Peter was no slouch when it came to his anatomical studies. “Isn’t that?” he asked.

“A chemical related to pain, yes. It would appear that what Osborn has been doing isn’t restarting a failing device, but rather shutting off those ports.” Dr. Banner shook his head. “I would just recommend blocking the ports, but that would be an exercise in futility. The device is manufacturing the chemical with each beat of the heart, and blocking the ports may very well cause a clog that could destroy the integrity of the device.” He sighed and pushed up his glasses. Much like Peter, he used his wrist to do so. “I’ll have to talk to Tony about it,” he said. “Mechanics are not my area of expertise.”

Peter nodded. “Thank you, Dr. Banner,” he said sincerely.

The doctor looked up with a soft smile. His curls were sticking up everywhere. “Do you know,” he asked, “how many people know about my work with gamma radiation?” At Peter’s confused look he continued, “Not very many. Not even Tony is entirely certain what I do or what that means. And yet, the first time I met you as part of the supportive lab assistant group, you asked me a question about that very research.”

Peter shifted as he remembered the incident in question. Dr. Banner had gone to the supply lab for—something, Peter couldn't remember what—and Dr. Chambers had introduced him, which prompted the question. Then, after Dr. Banner had left, Dr. Chambers spent the next fifteen minutes explaining that assistants were not supposed to talk when high names were in the lab. He’d threatened to dock the already minuscule pay and Peter had never forgotten.

“Do not worry Peter,” Dr. Banner said with gentle firmness as he turned back to his tablet. “We’ll do everything we can to save your friend.”

“Thank you,” Peter said again—and then fled, back to Dr. Stacey’s lab. Dr. Stacey didn’t drop any indication that she remembered her first meeting with Peter with surprising fondness. She probably didn’t, considering that the first time they’d met she’d gotten covered in glitter slime that exploded.

Time flew as the two of them worked, trying theory after theory, solution after solution, and nothing was working. When Peter had to call it a day and leave (he didn’t want Norman to guess that he knew where Harry was or that he was no longer under the older man’s control) the organic matrix was still breaking down under movement.

“We’ll figure it out,” Dr. Stacey said grimly as he left. Peter could do nothing but nod.

He looked up at the sky as he started walking and realized that he needed to become Spiderman. The city might not need him, not with Deadpool looking after it, but he needed the city. More importantly, he needed to do something that felt productive. He ducked into one of the blind spots of Stark Industries’s artificial intelligence and swiftly changed.

A GALLERY OF GRAND PRIX OF THE YEAR WINNERS SINCE 2008

This week, we celebrate over a decade’s worth of AD STARS Grand Prix of the Year winners, which each won US$10,000 at the annual AD STARS Awards.

When the first AD STARS Awards were held in 2018, the festival set out to create a new paradigm in the creative industries: a show that’s free to enter and supports creators with two $10,000 cash prizes every year. We want creators all over the world – whether they’re students or start-ups or agencies with limited award budgets – to have a forum where they can share their work, and inspire the world.

As Suthisak Sucharittanonta, Chairman & Chief Creative Officer at BBDO Bangkok explained while judging AD STARS 2017: “To win Grand Prix of the Year, the standard has to be very, very outstanding. It not only takes the brand to another level but also takes our ad industry to new heights.”

2019

Agency: FCB New York Client: Burger King Campaign: ‘The Whopper Detour’

The Whopper Detour campaign is an audacious idea that drove burger lovers to McDonald’s, where they could purchase Whoppers for only a penny thanks to an ingenious app with in-built geo-fencing. The campaign led to 1.5 million Burger King app downloads along with global media acclaim.

“When you can’t outspend your biggest competitor, you have to outsmart them,” explained Ted Lim, former Regional Chief Creative Officer at Dentsu Asia Pacific, who was an Executive Judge at AD STARS 2019.

Robin Fitzgerald, Chief Creative Officer at BBDO Atlanta and an Executive Judge at AD STARS 2019, added: “This was basically a brief to offer coupons for one-penny Whoppers, but the agency went above and beyond to make something much more culturally provocative.”

2018

Agency: Fitzco//McCann and Casanova//McCann (USA) Client: Coca-Cola Campaign: Share a Coke 1,000 Name Celebration

It took 30 songwriters, 45 musicians and over 2,625 hours to create 1,000 songs inspired by people’s names, which people could seek out online, hear on the radio and share on social channels.

Ari Halper, Creative Partner at FCB North America and Executive Judge at AD STARS 2018, said: “One of the biggest trends our industry is facing is that it’s hard to reach consumers with ‘push’ advertising, which means we need to find ways to get people to seek out our ideas. This campaign pulled people to seek it out. I also think there’s a tendency to always want to try something new, yet there’s great value in building on ideas. Coca-Cola’s latest campaign takes ‘Share a coke’ to another level. To me, that is a dying art. I think it’s important that our industry is mindful of not reinventing the wheel every time – once you’re onto something great, you can sometimes keep building upon it forever.”

Executive Judge Anna Qvennerstedt, Copywriter and Chairman at Forsman & Bodenfors in Sweden, says: “One of the things I really admire about this Coca-Cola campaign is the high ambition of the craft. I hope it will be an inspiration for agencies and clients to go that extra mile. It took a lot of working hours, blood, sweat and tears to make this idea – and it pays off.”

2017

Agency: Colenso BBDO, Auckland (New Zealand) Client: Pedigree Campaign: Pedigree Child Replacement Programme

This cheeky campaign encouraged empty nesters to replace their children with adopted dogs.

Helen Pak, who is now Creative SVP Creative at The Walt Disney Company, was an Executive Judge at AD STARS 2017. She said: “The Pedigree Child Replacement Challenge is a fantastic integrated campaign – each element was individually strong, delightfully crafted with great insight and humour. It was such an interesting, humorous new way to approach an age-old dilemma of increasing animal adoption rates.”

James Keng Lim, Creative Director at Hakuhodo Sinagpore, said: “What stood out was the brevity of thought, the audacity to think big, and a true desire to make a positive change.”

2016

Agency: Y&R New Zealand Client: Burger King + Peace One Day Campaign: McWhopper

To celebrate Peace Day, Burger King came up with a cheeky proposition for McDonald’s under the guise of a one-day truce. It invited McDonald’s to combine Big Mac and Whopper ingredients to create one mega burger. The proposal was rejected by McDonald’s but adored by the world.

Tim Doherty, Chief Creative Officer at Isobar China and an Executive Judge at AD STARS 2018 said: “The idea of giving two battling brands the chance to make peace on Peace Day is a big, big idea.”

2015

Agency: Leo Burnett Client: Always (Procter & Gamble) Campaign: Like A Girl

When did doing something “like a girl” become an insult? This pivotal campaign “won kudos all over the Internet for changing the conversation about what it means to run, throw and do pretty much any activity ‘like a girl,’” according to Huffington Post. With over 68 million views on YouTube, the ad was a collaboration between three Leo Burnett offices led by Judy John (who is now Global Chief Creative Officer at Edelman).

2014

Agency: Dentsu Tokyo Client: Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Campaign: Sound of Honda / Ayrton Senna 1989

To bring to life its car navigation system, Internavi, Honda re-enacted the world’s fastest lap by racing driver Ayrton Senna in the qualifying for the 1989 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix. It did this by collecting data from the car’s accelerator and engine to ingeniously recreate the lap using sound and light.

Agency: Forsman & Bodenfors (Sweden) Client: Volvo Trucks Campaign: The Chase 360

Forsman & Bodenfors set a herd of bulls free on the new Volvo FL in a rather extreme demonstration of the performance of Volvo Trucks. The interactive experience was filmed using 28 cameras so that users can switch between five different views.

2013

Agency: Cheil, Seoul Client: Samsung Life Insurance Campaign: Bridge of Life

Mapo Bridge in Seoul has become a popular spot for suicide attempts as it is accessible to pedestrians. Samsung worked with Cheil to display positive, empowering messages as people walk along the bridge to encourage them to keep walking across its entire length. The campaign contributed to a decline in suicides on Seoul’s bridges, and was acclaimed around the world.

2012

Agency: Hakuhodo Inc. Client: Google Chrome / Google Japan Campaign: Hatsune Miku

To showcase the creative power of Chrome, Google Japan created a campaign featuring virtual singer Hatsune Miku, tapping into the “vocaloid” phenomenon by using singing voice synthesizer software. When people searched for ‘Hatsune Miku’ on Google Chrome, they were invited to make their own songs and videos – and thousands of people around the world did just that.

2011 – Grand Prix

Agency: Tokyu Agency Inc. Client: Japan Racing and Livestock Promotion Foundation Campaign: Japan World Cup

This integrated campaign for the Japan Racing and Livestock Promotion Foundation set out to raise the appeal of horse racing to the youth of Japan.

2010 – Grand Prix

Agency: Special Group Client: Orcon Campaign: Together Incredible

Special Group connected 9 Kiwi's to Iggy Pop’s Miami studio using Orcon Broadband, and together they re-recorded 'The Passenger'. It’s a remix like you’ve never seen before, and it won our 2010 Grand Prix.

2009

Agency: Ogilvy & Mather, Hong Kong Client: Match Box Campaign: Chase

Ogilvy & Mather wanted to highlight the true-to-life realness of Matchbox cars, so they created footage of live driving situations to a soundtrack of kids making the noises of engines revving, changing gears, skidding around corners, sirens, and crashes.

2008

Agency: BBDO/Proximity Malaysia Client: Jeep (Chrysler Korea) Campaign: Husky & Camel

This visually simple campaign is part of a bigger ‘Two Worlds’ campaign that shows the enduring power of print. Two shapes – a husky and camel – overlap to reveal a Jeep, a clever way of showing that the Jeep is designed for any kind of weather conditions, from snow to desert.

LAST: LAST THING I BOUGHT: Coffee. LAST STORE I VISITED: CVS, but I work there. Uh. Fuck, I haven’t gone to any store in like months other than my work. Uh. Gas station, I guess, for my smokes? LAST TEXT MESSAGE: “I can come in for work now if you can pick me up. TY.” LAST SONG YOU LISTENED TO: Everyone says don’t, sung by Raul Esparza. LAST THING I ATE: Shit, when did I even eat last? Fuck. Um. Yeah, this would be easier to answer if I ate more than like once a day. I think steak? Maybe? Idk, really. HAVE YOU EVER: DATED SOMEONE TWICE: Nope BEEN CHEATED ON: I don’t think so? But I wouldn’t put it past the bastard I was with, really. KISSED SOMEONE AND REGRETTED IT: … Honestly, y’know, that’s complicated. I regret the relationship I was in, but I don’t regret having been sexual in general with that person? So… yes and no? Idk. LOST SOMEONE SPECIAL: Yes. My great-grandmas have been gone 12-13 years now and I still have trouble talking about their deaths. BEEN DEPRESSED: I have bipolar disorder, depressed is one of my main emotions. BEEN DRUNK AND THROWN UP: Way too many times to count. IN THE PAST YEAR HAVE YOU: MADE A NEW FRIEND: Yes FALLEN OUT OF LOVE: No. But I haven’t fallen in love either. LAUGHED UNTIL YOU CRIED: Yes MET SOMEONE WHO CHANGED YOU: Yes. FOUND OUT WHO YOUR TRUE FRIENDS WERE: Yes. In all the good ways, found that people I didn’t realize were close really were. I ended up in a psych ward due to a complete mental breakdown, and I realized I had an entire support network that I never thought to ask for help from before. Just everyone in my life really rallied around me. One of my friends, who generally hates driving distances, drove almost an hour to the hospital to see me, sometimes more than once a week (I was there for almost a month). That same friend also hugged me when he left, even though he is the least touchy-feely guy in existence. One of my work friends got really worried about me when I stopped coming to work, but he still didn’t pressure me to talk about it, just asked me what he can do to help, but told me that he doesn’t need to know what happened, only what I’m willing to share. I did tell him everything, because he is a good friend, but he was so good to me. People I hadn’t talked to in ages, because I was isolating severely beforehand, came and visited, or called, and it was just so touching. Even now, a couple months later, people will ask me how I’m doing, and my best friend (the one who drove couple times a week to visit) makes sure to call me several times a week just to check in, just so I don’t end up in that situation again. After the first psych ward visit (I had two this summer), I attempted suicide, and I called that best friend in a panic that I needed to get to the hospital, but I didn’t want my parents to know what I had done, so I didn’t want to call 911, and he came and got me right away, and he stayed at the hospital for almost 2 hours, until they took me back into the psych ward. FOUND OUT SOMEONE WAS TALKING ABOUT YOU: Yes, a coworker, but she does that to everyone, although I think I’m her special project. I don’t much care. GENERAL: HOW MANY PEOPLE ON TUMBLR DO YOU KNOW IN REAL LIFE?: Uh… no one, I guess, but I still defend I know enough about one to count it, so there. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?: No and thank god. I’m not an animal person. I used to have lizards, but they died on me. I like lizards. I wanted snakes, but my mom (with whom I still live) said absolutely fucking not. DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR NAME?: Nah, I like mine. Wish people would pronounce it right, but that’s a different matter. WHAT TIME DID YOU WAKE UP THIS MORNING?: 6 fucking a.m. Which was only because I was due in at work at 7, otherwise, I am not conscious before 1pm, and often sleep until 3. WHAT WERE YOU DOING LAST NIGHT?: Hm. Work until 8pm, which was hell, and then fucking around on the computer until like 1a.m. Which may explain why I feel like death today. NAME SOMETHING YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR: Getting to drive again? Coffee with a girl next week? Seeing my best friend again? HAVE YOU EVER MET SOMEONE NAMED TOM?: … Honestly, I’m sure I have, but none come to mind. Must not have made a huge impression on me. WHAT’S GETTING ON YOUR NERVES RN?: Not much. I’m too tired to give any fucks about anything. Uh. The existence of 7 a.m. I’m pretty sure the devil invented mornings as a punishment for our sins. BLOOD TYPE: A positive. I used to be a blood donor, so I’ve known my blood type for years (I am no longer a blood donor, because the last time I donated, I got so sick my doctor was tempted to transfuse my blood back in.) NICKNAME: I don’t have one. And that’s fine with me. There are no ways to shorten my name, it’s only two syllables, and I don’t particularly care for pet names. Dear and sweetheart and honey are just… ugh. The only one I like is ‘babe’, and obviously, that’s not one I’ll let many people call me (I do have a coworker who calls me that, but she’s awesome, so she can) RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single. ZODIAC SIGN: Which one’s the zodiac? Is that the one with the animals, like the rat and the horse and ram, or is that the one with the astrology crap, like Cancer and Aries and Taurus? Either way, I’m a horse and a Sagittarius. And it makes no fucking difference. The year you were born in has zero effect on your personality, and the gravitational pull of the planets even less so. Actually, people have done the math, and the gynecologist present exerts as much gravitational pull on you (because all objects exert gravitational pull, not just planets and stars) as some of the planets on the horoscope, so if you really want to blame someone for your failings, why not the doctor who birthed you? The whole thing is an utter load of nonsense, really, bullshit fucking pseudo-science idiots keep falling for because they need something to believe in, because the stark reality that there is nothing guiding their lives and everything is random is too bleak. (This bleeds into my problems with religion, too, by the way, but I have a measure more respect for that, because at least it instills some level of ethics, which astrology utterly fails to do. But only a measure more.) PRONOUNS: She/Her FAVORITE TV SHOW: Doctor Who, Doctor Who, Doctor Who. All the goddamn way, do not take away my Doctor Who. Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny at least have some kind of sense for a child, but now we’re trying to convince them there’s a goddamn fairy who’d rather have a tooth than money? Who the fuck came up with this? Are we just outright saying children are fucking dumb little shits who’ll believe any fool thing we tell them? Because, yeah, of course most of them do, their parents, who they trust unconditionally, are telling them these things, and telling them about the Tooth Fairy – and Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, by the way – is an exploitation of that trust, and of childhood innocence. We do it because it’s cute that little kids fervently believe in a magical man who brings presents, instead of the truth, which is that their parents love them, and that because they love them, this one day, they are given gifts, out of that love, and on a holiday that had become about familial love. How is that not a better story? Why does some magical shit need to get involved? And the contortions people put themselves through to keep Santa alive for their children, it’s absurd! (Also, don’t tell me Christmas is not about familial love, because it absolutely is – yes, it’s a religious holiday too, but I think Jesus would approve of it being about love, given his beliefs).

Forget heroes: The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs more supervillains

Thanos deserves more than this.

Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for the end of Avengers: Infinity War

Maybe I’m a monster, but the moment I cheered the loudest during Avengers: Infinity War was when all the superheroes disintegrated and the bad guy got his happy ending.

I’m certainly not a fan of genocide (to put it mildly), or even a Thanos groupie. But I do like compelling stories, and a villain-centric arc that refused to let the heroes win was the first time a Marvel movie has surprised me.

So what’s the problem? Well, the ending leaves me itching for a Thanos prequel instead of the next Avengers or even Captain Marvel — which will undoubtedly undo this unhappy ending. And the knowledge that we’ll probably never get that prequel is why the Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting to lose me.

Every two-bit comic book fan will tell you heroes are only as great as their villains. Everyone, it seems, except for the folks at Marvel Studios.

I’m not the first to point out Marvel’s “villain problem,” or how evil characters tend to be disposable onscreen. Many had high hopes that the introduction of Thanos would fix this problem, but he’s only shined a spotlight on it. Marvel’s villain problem runs deep, requiring a total shift in the MCU franchise formula.

But it won’t be fixed until Marvel actually admits it’s a problem. Head of studio Kevin Feige told io9 that he recognizes the issue with their villains — yet he feels pretty OK about it. “It always starts with what serves the story the most and what serves the hero the most,” he said.

I could do with getting rid of, like, two-thirds of these characters.

But by failing to see how villains are as integral as heroes, the MCU fundamentally misunderstands what makes a good superhero story.

At first, the MCU got away with wasting great superheroes on forgettable villains who were plot devices disguised as characters. But Avengers: Infinity War showed how short-sighted that was. And it ain’t gonna cut it anymore.

I’m tired of paint-by-numbers movies introducing hordes of new bad guys that the hero can Hulk-smash until the next round and round and around we go, ad infinitum. Infinity War’s ending was powerful because it finally broke from that cycle … until the end credits, at which point Nick Fury reminds us it’ll be business as usual soon enough.

What’s next for the MCU once it wraps on the biggest bad’s inevitable defeat in Avengers 4? I hope investing in villains is a top priority. From the looks of Venom, it just might be (though don’t put all your eggs in that basket).

Once the Infinity Gauntlet conflict ends, villains will be key to keeping audiences engaged in this increasingly expansive crossover machine. Here’s why, and how.

Villains need their own arcs, developed over multiple movies

The first step is to invest time and effort into establishing villains who evolve throughout the franchise. Marvel was so careful about slowly introducing and incorporating its heroes into the larger MCU. Why don’t villains get half as much thought?

This shift toward villains would set the stage for more meaningful conflicts, and allow for experimentation with the kind of stories Marvel tells. Why not bring Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan back for a prequel? Or zoom in on Thanos and Gamora’s backstory?

There’s a reason Loki was crowned “best Marvel villain” for so long. It’s because the first Thor movie was as much his origin story as Thor’s. Loki’s reappearances across the franchise made us as attached to him as we were to any Avenger.

Then there’s Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War, which succeeded because the original Captain America established the foundation of Bucky’s character — and then twisted it and his relationship to Cap in a gut-wrenching way.

And don’t forget Erik Killmonger, who captivated our hearts and minds in about 30 minutes of screen time. Black Panther started with Killmonger, as J’Bou tells his son the story of Wakanda, leading to an entire opening scene establishing Erik’s motivations.

Thanos had the best Infinity War arc, but it was still wasted

Sure, Thanos was better than, say, Ultron.

I was really hoping Thanos would kill Tony Stark.

But many comic book fans felt the movie squandered his story. Our own Adam Rosenberg wrote an explainer on the character’s comic book iteration, showing moviegoers just how many missed opportunities there were in Infinity War. Like how “the sight of a rough-skinned, misshapen Baby Thanos was too much for his mother to bear. It drove her instantly mad, and she tried to kill her newborn.”

It’s a detail that would have given much more depth to his and Gamora’s story.

For general audiences, Thanos came across as, at first, laughable. So much so that Peter Quill feels the need to speak roast Thanos, almost as if the movie anticipated the criticism. Marvel probably did anticipate it, because despite 10 years and 19 movies of carefully fitting superheroes into the Infinity War puzzle, it’s never really been about the villain. When the time came, they were like, “Shit — no one even knows why this big dumb purple gummy bear even matters.”

Thanos was basically relegated to after-credits scenes for 10 years, only being more prominently featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. as a disembodied giant stone monster.

Marvel’s run out of heroes — but there are plenty of great villains left

Marvel’s done such a good job of establishing a wide array of heroes that it’s basically run out of top tier IP for more franchises. Ant-Man should be indication enough that we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel, and it only gets Hawkeye levels of mediocre from here.

You know what Marvel Studios hasn’t capitalized on? Its fantastic villain-centric comics.

We’ve already mentioned the wasted material of Thanos Rising. But in the comicverse, there’s also a whole run after Civil War where Green Goblin takes control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and assembles a “Dark Avengers,” re-appropriating our favorite hero costumes as villains: Bullseye becomes Daredevil and Venom takes over for Spider-Man. That’s just two relevant examples.

You can get rid of all of these except Spidey and the big dude.

Fix Marvel’s arms race for bigger, badder threats with better villains

Ever since the first Avengers, Marvel’s been chasing bigger catastrophes than the attack on New York — but that’s the wrong way to go about it.

The result is a franchise stuck in a disaster-porn arms race. The cost of this increasingly enormous and ridiculous scale is personal stakes (and apartment buildings). Infinity War kept needing to remind us that the risk of Thanos winning was universal genocide, because we’re that desensitized to world-ending threats.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, on the other hand, is a great example of how villains can ground the whole story, introducing personal stakes on a smaller scale. Yes, that’s kinda Spidey’s thing, while the Avengers deal with universe-ending stuff. But actually, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Civil War, Black Panther, and even Logan all took similar approaches to villains and scale.

We live in the age of the anti-hero

Just look at some of the biggest pop culture phenomenons over the past few years: Breaking Bad, Dexter, Mad Men. Or, if you want to go closer to home, Marvel’s own Jessica Jones or Deadpool.

No one is wholly good or wholly bad. That’s why we adore Game of Thrones, with its heroes who commit villainous act and its villains who have undeniable humanity. Blurring the lines between good and evil is the point of George R.R. Martin’s series, which deconstructs the common fantasy genre trope.

I need about 100x more of this.

Marvel movies almost always fail at making even the heroes relatable. Save for Black Panther, Marvel stories are usually irrelevant to the real world. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Superheroes inherently engage with our society’s ideals, morals, and struggle to be good. Shouldn’t Marvel reflect how difficult that question is to answer?

Which reminds me…

This sanctimonious heroic bullshit is getting old

Show of hands: How many times did you yell at the heroes of Infinity War for repeatedly losing stone after stone to Thanos because of an aggressively simple-minded and selfish moral compass?

Yes, I know Cap: “We don’t trade lives.” That’s the summary of this entire movie’s conflict. Thanos believes in sacrificing half the universe’s population for a greater good, while the Avengers think they shouldn’t have to sacrifice anything at all to save half of the universe’s population.

That’s not only a really narrow definition of heroism, but also astoundingly unsophisticated ethics.

The Avengers could use some lessons from The Good Place, namely the trolley problem. Because the idea of sacrificing one to save the lives of many isn’t a rosy concept, but there’s enough ethical grounds to warrant some debate!

But no. Cap grunts, everyone agrees. Ultimately, we have their moral high horses to thank for saving Vision (not even) at the cost of half a universe full of lives. Hope that clean conscience is worth it!

Avengers’ morality is tired, outdated, and underdeveloped. Sacrifice is part of the superhero job description. Heroes do trade lives. Just ask 9/11 first responders, or other everyday people risking their lives for others. Hell, ask Groot! Or Peter Quill! Even annoyingly uncompromising heroes like Batman are willing to sacrifice reputation and love for the greater good of Gotham.

I’m only watching Avengers 4 if Vision stays dead.

This Care Bear heroism plagues the Marvel franchise, preventing fresh, original storytelling. Black Panther was the first movie in a long time to complicate the Marvel moral ethos. We can’t just keep relying on Cap and Iron Man’s creative differences.

It’ll be increasingly hard for us to care about another two hours of dudes in tights fighting when we know the good guy wins, almost always without consequence. Infinity War dared to break that mold, and we hope Avengers 4 genuinely wrestles with the mistakes the heroes made in it. But I’ll eat my laptop if the Infinity Gauntlet story doesn’t end with most of the heroes being revived.

I’m not arguing the bad guys should take over the MCU. But the MCU needs to let bad guys do what they do best: Force us and our heroes to complicate our understanding of what it means to fight for good.

If it doesn’t, we’re just going to keep getting superhero movies where the good guys win — because that’s how the MCU business model works. And that’s not ultimately very entertaining.

OFYE Matters: Time Management

“Time management is the elephant sitting in the middle of the living room for all online learners,” says Risa Blair, an instructor for Southern New Hampshire University, one of many professionals dedicated to the online first year experience (OFYE) of students. Her peers in the online learning environment agree. For the new online learner, organizing one’s time can be a difficult and persistent challenge. Students have to juggle a multitude of commitments outside the classroom such as working at one or more jobs, tending to the needs of children or grandchildren, or caring for aging parents. Trying to integrate focused time for self-development is difficult for most people and particularly daunting for online students in their first few terms. This is a topic where OFYE-dedicated teachers can add meaningful value.

We asked the experienced OFYE community for their perspectives and classroom-tested time management strategies that could impact early student success. Their individual comments and tips have been organized to provide a comprehensive and resourceful collection.

What are the most common activities that online students juggle?

Jennifer Sturge of Southern New Hampshire University shares: Full time jobs, families, friends and coaching are just a few things that vie for our students’ time daily. One of the biggest responsibilities facing our students is how to manage everything that they need to do in their day to day lives and add online college courses to their routine. In general, I find that my students who struggle the most with time management are those who don’t stick to a consistent schedule for completing course work.

Why is focus particularly important for online students?

Wendy Conway, Assistant Professor at Ashford University writes: In many cases, students who take online classes for the first time have the expectation that it is faster, easier, and provides immediate gratification of their efforts. They are in for a surprise when they learn that the only difference is the method of delivery (and sometimes the length of the course). Writing intently is much different than tweeting or texting and reading a full article or chapter is much different than a summary or synopsis of information fleeting across a smartphone screen. It takes time to ingest and reflect on course material and even more time to prepare a thoughtful and well-written paper or discussion.

How do online students cope with time management challenges?

Connie Lower, Assistant Professor at Ashford University, explains: Many students who have time management issues will simply give up without reaching out to anyone. It is our responsibility, as caring and attentive instructors, to intentionally find those students and provide support while they are making their way through what can be a perilous first year.

Ariyo Oluwunmi, College Liaison and Communication Instructor at Durham Technical Community College, emphasizes: Time management seems to be a skill that many of my OFYE students believe they have under control. Online classes are more self-directed; yet, many students struggle with implementing time management effectively. I instruct the students not to let time control them but to become effective “time managers.”

What are some tips to helping OFYE students with time management?

1. Understand the student and his/her vision.

Risa Blair shares: Find out what the student vision is! Students most often tell us in their first introductory posting why they want to earn their degrees. There are a variety of reasons, including career opportunities, advancement, or change; completing a lifetime bucket list challenge; or serving as a good role model for their children or grandchildren. These factors serve as the fuel for helping students with time management. We have the opportunity to look back in the class and see what inspired these students to choose to earn their degrees in the first place. We can personalize our responses to the students to include these elements in our discussions or personalized outreach.

Connie Lower further suggests: Students will drop hints that say “watch me and help me”. Young children, no technology other than a smart phone, three part-time jobs, little support from the family unit all scream, “This is going to be difficult with my situation.” Pay attention to the signs. Make notes about those students that you see at risk.

2. Recommend writing down all tasks.

Risa Blair explains: I generally recommend that students use a monthly calendar (the 30,000′ view) to write down when all of the assignments are due, a weekly planner (the 10,000′ view) to break down the tasks and times to meet the weekly deadlines, and a daily to-do-list (the 100′ view) to drill down and itemize each task that they will complete on a particular day. They love the idea of crossing things off the to-do-list each day. There is power in the pen. The task of writing things down makes it 42% more likely that you will achieve your tasks. Additionally, for the technophile, I highly encourage students to utilize daily reminders, and perhaps even an online to-do-list application. Term after term, this formula works! Students find success in following the strategy.

3. Help students leverage the syllabus and identify “time-wasters.”

Ariyo Oluwunmi suggests: To help students recognize the importance of time management, I first help them realize how to organize and plan their time between specific activities. Creating an engaging syllabus allows me to chart the course’s roadmap for my students. Secondly, I help the students understand what their specific time wasters are and allow those time wasters to assist them. Through an arrangement of various activities, I hope the students discover how to become “time managers.”

Ariyo further shares: The students’ track their daily activities for one whole day including documenting all the times they use their cell phone/social media (even if it is for a second) to assess the roadmap of their day. I allow my students to see what their time wasters are through the previous assignment and recognize how their time wasters can be allies. I introduce the students to helpful apps like Quizlet, Skype, Remind and other programs that they can be used to help them save time.

4. Provide resources.

Connie Lower: Include quotes, tips, and short videos about time management best practices in Announcements as sidebars. Provide links to high quality time management websites such as “Mind Tools.” Encourage students to offer comments on these practices if that feature is available in your LMS.

5. Address individual student needs.

Connie Lower: [Consider] giving OFYE students a grace day beyond the university established due date. For many students, one more day is enough to let them breathe, reduce anxiety, and complete their work. After grading an activity, whether it’s the first or fifth in the class, list those students who didn’t submit their work after the grace day has passed. Contact each student by email explaining your concern for their absence and offering assistance. Encourage personal contact with you concerning their circumstances. Include in this email a link to a time management article or a YouTube video.

6. Show your human side.

Jennifer Sturge shares: One of the first things that I let students know is that I am a working mom. I talk about my struggles with finding time to be an online teacher and still attend my kid’s events and help with homework and get through the day. I share with them that I have learned that Friday’s are crockpot meal day. Seeing me as another working parent helps students to understand that they can take control of their time too.

7. Help students manage their school assignments.

Vicki Pallo, Assistant Professor and Textbook Coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University, offers: To assist students in my writing intensive OFYE courses with managing their time more effectively, my first line of offense is to scaffold assignments in such a way that things are due incrementally and assignments build upon one another. In essence, I manage the projects for them, step by step. By doing so, I’m training them to see the natural steps involved in the research and writing process, so that they can (hopefully) reproduce this strategy in other courses. Other methods I have employed include:

Meeting with students (video conference) to discuss time management strategies like using Google calendar and alerts.

Keeping deadlines consistent. In my course, all assignments are shared on Mondays, and due the following Monday. The only exceptions are when I have a two-step assignment that involves peer feedback; the first step will always be due on Thursdays.

Giving students until the end of the day on the due date. Students are typically night owls, and value the extra time to scramble right up until the due date.

Periodically I’ll email a reminder about upcoming due dates; this helps jog their memory when the class/assignment has drifted to the back of their minds.

What are the characteristics of a student with good time management skills?

Wendy Conway offers:

Planning ahead. The most successful students review weekly requirements a day or two ahead of the weekly start and compare that with their own personal schedules to figure out their study strategies. They also plan time to devote complete attention to their coursework. This might mean delegating some responsibilities to a spouse, significant other, family member, or friend.

Learning how to say “no.” Students need to learn how to say “no,” at least for the first year. Juggling academic, professional, and personal lives can be stressful so eliminating any additional stressors is highly recommended. Many students simply don’t say “no” because of their fear of being judged negatively. The key to saying “no” is to frame it in a positive way. For example, he or she can say, “Thank you BUT I have an important paper due on Tuesday and must spend the weekend preparing for it. I hope you understand how important my academic success is to my career goals.” Or, “I need to say no this time. If I were to accept, I would not be able to devote 100% of my attention to the task and that is not fair to you or me. My coursework demands 100% of my attention right now. Once I complete this (course task, week, class, etc.), I will be happy to help.” Either way, saying “no” removes the guilt and allows the student to feel confident pursuing his or her educational goals.

Jennifer Sturge shares:

Set a schedule using your calendar and reminders on your phone or computer. It’s hard to ignore a bleating reminder that is signaling you to start your work for the week.

Start early in the week. Log in on Monday. Look at what needs to be done and print off the weekly checklist. Checking off items as you do them makes you feel accomplished and more in control of your time.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. So, the floor isn’t vacuumed to perfection. It’s okay. School comes first.

Find time to relax. There is nothing wrong with watching your favorite show or binging on Netflix occasionally. Just do it after you get your school work completed.

Eat well and exercise. You’d be amazed at how much more you can get done when you feel good and are healthy.

Take breaks. When you find your mind wandering or are not feeling productive any more, stand up and take a quick walk, get a drink, or a snack.

Put that phone down! Nothing steals time faster than social media. Use a social media break as a reward after accomplishing an assignment, a discussion post, or a Learn Smart.

Set a goal and stick to it. And if something happens to mess up your time management goal, just switch it up slightly. No one is perfect: life happens!

“I Felt Like A King When I Wore It..”

Here’s a treat for perfume aficionados. Master perfumer, Roja Dove shares his insights on their upcoming collections and the interesting stories behind each of his perfumes

With the firm belief that every fragrance has the potential to unlock dreams and rekindle memories, Roja Dove weaves his artistic magic to create perfumes that never cease to amaze. Each fragrance under the Roja Dove banner is an encapsulation of the perfumer’s journey and carries his secret discovery. In this edition, ParfumPlus talks to Roja Dove to get an insight into his creations, philosophy and mesmerizing perfume stories.

PafumPlus (PP): Philosophically “only the best will do” is what you have quoted many times. What inspires you to reach up to these highs in each of your creations?

Roja Dove (RD): This passion to prioritize quality is rooted in my childhood; thanks to my mother. Ever since I was a little boy, she ensured that I never got the good things in life easily. For instance, if I liked a bag, my mother would always ask me to earn it instead of simply buying it for me. So, if I really wanted something, I would go to mom or dad, help them with the household chores and earn my way to whatever I liked. This way, I learned to value the importance of quality in all things that I own and the same philosophy has been imbibed in my Roja Parfums too. I ensure I use only the top quality ingredients in all my perfume creations.

PP: Are there any special memories from the starting days that you would say moulded you to be what you are today?

RD: There are, of course. One particular incident that I recall now, laid the foundation for one of the key qualities that you see in every Roja perfume.

When I was around 18 years old, studying in Cambridge, I remember walking into a very popular store and saw a beautiful shirt. I had no idea what the material was which the shirt was made of but it caught my attention, and I just had to have it. It cost me three weeks worth of my earnings to buy this shirt. I felt like a king when I wore it for the first time. It was made of the Silk crêpe de Chine.

That’s when I decided, even my perfumes should be such that when anyone uses them they should feel special.

You would see, even for my perfume bottles, we give a lot of importance to design. The boxes are handmade, with Swarovski crystals embedded on the cap and so much more details that beautifully convey the element of luxury. After all, you see, luxury is all about little things that you may not need to do but you would still desire to do.

PP: What about your perfumes? Do they too all have stories behind them?

RD: My perfumes have been inspired by my life’s journeys. For example in 2011, I went to Russia, I had the privilege to have a private tour inside the Kremlin. At that time Russia was a closed country and it was indeed an honour to have been able to visit the place. I was fascinated by the two-headed imperial eagle, a symbol of the Russian Czars. When I decided to re-launch my perfume Diaghilev, the design of the box in which I placed the bottle had the imperial eagle on the side, a creative nuance inspired by my visit to Russia.

A Good Night Kiss by Roja Dove

Another of my favourite, A Good Night Kiss is inspired by a childhood memory of my mother. I was just six years old but I remember my mother dressed for a cocktail party. She was wearing a golden dress and the light from the landing fell on her back casting a fairy-like halo. When she kissed me goodnight, I remember the smell of her powder and perfume, it was beautiful especially when I link it to the fairy-like appearance of my mother. For years, I had in mind that I wanted to create a fragrance inspired by this memory.

My mother died in 2009 and that is perhaps one of the biggest motivations that led to the founding of Roja Parfums in 2011. I launched Roja Parfums on July 2, 2011, a day before my parents’ wedding anniversary. Gradually in 2015, I had the chance to encapsulate my childhood memory into a fragrance. I launched A Good Night Kiss in the perfumery I have in Harolds on the sixth floor. Everything linked to this launch was associated with the number six in one way or the other because that is my mother’s birthday. Initially, we made 6 bottles of this perfume when it was launched on January 6, 2015. On the first day itself, we sold all bottles. By the end of the month, this was one of our bestselling perfumes.

PP: And which perfume does the master perfumer, himself wear?

RD: My choice of perfume is very unique. In fact, it is a formula that I have created and have been using for the last thirty years. However, when people around me insisted on buying the fragrance I wear, I decided to introduce my signature scent in the market on my birthday which falls on 25th. It was a huge success. Initially, we made 25 bottles for Britain and 25 bottles for the rest of the world. It was all sold out very quickly and so this year, we decided to introduce 250 bottles of the same fragrance.

Let me tell you a little about the composition of this fragrance. One of the elements in my signature perfume is the use of pure gold flakes inside it. But, this gold is not what would convey the luxury associated with this fragrance. In fact, the gold in it enables me to have fun when I have to explain the beauty of this fragrance to people. For instance, the jasmine used in this perfume is double the price of gold, the orris used in it is three and half times and the ambergris that gives the fragrance its sillage is seven times the price of the gold. So you see gold is one of the cheapest ingredients used in my perfume.

PP: Of the entire Roja Dove collection of perfumes, which is the one you are most proud of?

RD: My favourite is, of course, the one I wear and just spoke about. However, I am most proud of Diaghilev. There is a story behind this one as well which I must share with your readers. You see the idea to create this perfume stems back to one of my visits to the Victorian Albert museum where I was giving a lecture on Couture: Golden decade 1947-1957. When I was there I was introduced to a man who was soon going to put up an exhibition on Golden Age of the Ballets Russes. Not many people know that Ballets Russes is associated with theatre and perfumery. Yes! He was known to perfume the curtains on the stage so that when they were drawn at the start of the show, it would let out a whiff of memorable fragrance.

As a tribute to him, I decided to create the perfume Diaghilev for this upcoming exhibition. Initially, I made 500 bottles and it was a philanthropic venture so the risk was bigger. But the fragrance was hugely appreciated by people. We sold out much sooner than expected. Later in 2013, I relaunched this perfume inspired by my visit to Russia.

Elysium by Roja Dove

Another of my favourites is my latest fragrance Elysium which is a stark contrast to my previous creations. This is a fragrance for men laced with citrusy notes.

To conclude I would say that each Roja Dove perfume is carefully developed to suit specific personality. We have a balanced collection which was missing in men’s perfume. Elysium has filled that gap beautifully. It is an ideal choice for the carefree man who is contemporary in his sense of style.

PP: You seem to have a special preference for the Middle East.

RD: Yes I do! After all, it was here that I discovered Oudh Bakhoor and other beautiful ingredients that further refined my skill in perfumery. Not just that, my brand which was launched in Harrods was sold out because of the Arab clientele. They were my first clients. They loved it and my brand got its recognition instantly. Therefore I owe this region a lot. Additionally, I am fascinated by the love for perfumes exhibited by the people in this region.

Oman is where we had the first free-standing shop. We have now expanded to London and Bahrain. I am confident that very soon we will have a store in UAE as well.

For Kingdom of Bahrain, the perfume is an attempt to encapsulate the spirit associated to the name of the country. Bahrain literally means two seas, a blend of fresh water and salty water. The use of ingredients like jasmine, rose and vanilla in this perfume symbolize the fresh water while the presence of citrusy notes symbolizes the salty water. I have also used ambergris or pearl of the whale in this perfume considering Bahrain is known to produce the finest of pearls.

The Language of Microbial Culture: Explaining Prebiotics, Probiotics, Synbiotics and Postbiotics

It’s no secret that it’s one of my favorite subjects—the burgeoning field of human gastrointestinal microbiology. I know…it’s easy to get caught up in the comparative excitement of it all.

The microbiota is familiar territory to most Primal types, but with time and research, we come to understand the nuances of the terrain a little better. New terms pop up. Novel discoveries grab our attention. Promising connections become apparent. It feels like a good day to go over a bit of the latest—to provide a little refresher for those who’ve joined us recently and most of all to offer some additional perspective on what we’re learning as studies branch into new depths.

So without further ado, welcome to Biome 101.

The Cheat Sheet

Probiotics

Okay, most of you don’t need a refresher on this one. But for many, “probiotics” is simply a buzz word for something they vaguely remember is healthy…for some hazy, complicated reason. For those lost souls, here’s the quick and dirty.

The average human gut contains between 1000 and 1150 different species of bacteria and yeast, with the total population count numbering in the trillions—that for the most part, are either harmless or contributing valuable functions to your body and mind.

Competition for prime gut real estate encourages a healthy anti-pathogenic intestinal tract and sound immune function throughout. Essentially, it’s like a an old-growth forest ecosystem, whereby the natural competition of both indigenous plant and animal species works together to maintain a state of healthy equilibrium for the forest biome as a whole, preventing colonization by exotic (aka pathogenic) species. Some of the functions that play out include:

secretion of anti-microbial proteins that protect against pathogenic bacteria

maintaining and restoring intestinal homeostasis

interaction with our in-built immune receptors

metabolizing indigestible compounds and extracting nutrients from the foods we eat

Modern science has thus far managed to create artificial cultures of around 40% of these beneficial gut bacterial strains. These cultures are, essentially, what we know to be probiotics—collections of known beneficial microorganisms that promote the re-colonization and maintenance of healthy gut populations.

And despite their comparatively recent rise to stardom, humans have been making probiotics for millennia. Yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, kvass, raw vinegar—basically any fermented food has the potential to be classed as a probiotic. That being said, not every product with “live cultures” is necessarily a probiotic. To be classed as such, that product needs to promote measurable health improvements in either the gut, oral cavity, vagina, or skin.

Nowadays, it’s all about the probiotic supplements that can guarantee the most CFUs (colony forming units). Call me old school, but I’m more of a quality over quantity kind of guy.

Prebiotics

This is where we start getting into less familiar territory for some folks, but it’s actually quite simple. Prebiotics are special plant fibers that nourish the good bacteria already living in your gut—essentially, a hearty meal for your beneficial bacteria. Prebiotics are indigestible fibers that can pass through the gastrointestinal tract and arrive in your gut relatively unscathed, where they’re feasted upon (aka fermented) by trillions of hungry mouths.

Big-name prebiotic sources include green bananas, jicama, raw leeks (I’ll take mine cooked, thanks), dandelion greens, raw garlic, onion, and raw asparagus. Prebiotics are often integrated into probiotic supplements to not only provide a vital food source for the new colonials, but to encourage continued growth of the existing gut flora.

Synbiotics

Which brings me very smoothly onto synbiotics. Essentially, this is a technical sounding label to describe products or treatments that combine both probiotics and prebiotics to create a super potion for your nether regions. In the words of the white coats, “because the word alludes to synergism, this term should be reserved for products in which the prebiotic compound selectively favors the probiotic compound.” Got that? No worries. Let’s just look at what it means for your morning supplement or dinner plate.

While you’ll have no trouble locating a good symbiotic (yes, as it happens, I can recommend one that I use every day), there’s also plenty of fermented food pairings that together create a powerful synergistic effect. Classic examples are yogurt and raw honey (yes, please), kefir and chia seeds, or pickled asparagus if you’re feeling more adventurous. Raw apple cider vinegar contains plenty of pectin (a prebiotic) and of course good levels of beneficial bacteria, making it a synbiotic option for those who choose it.

Postbiotics

The fourth and final term may be the least familiar concept in the microbiology realm. In a nutshell, post-biotics are the metabolic by-products of the bacteria living in your gut and other microbiomes of your body. Researchers found that these by-products can be utilized to lower blood glucose and therefore show promise as a treatment for prediabetes.

It’s an interesting concept and developing subfield. Because much of the immune-supporting and inflammation-lowering benefits of gut bacteria are actually derived from their metabolic by-products, it stands to reason that providing certain at-risk people with specific post-biotics would go a long way towards helping them. These kinds of applications may make for a powerful in-clinic treatment for certain disorders and gut dysbioses, but it can never replace the long-term maintenance and 24/7 protective powers that an active, healthy gut population can provide.

Human Microbiome Research and What It Means for Primal Living

Researchers are increasingly discovering/re-discovering just how personalized our gut microbiomes really are. A 2013 study examined 252 fecal metagenomes from 207 individuals from both Europe and North America, detecting 10.3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms and 1051 structural variants. Researchers went on to conclude that “individual-specific strains are not easily replaced and that an individual might have a unique metagenomic genotype, which may be exploitable for personalized diet or drug intake.” We have ourselves an interesting finding here with promising suggestions for the future of the field: our gut populations are entirely individual, meaning that prebiotic, probiotic, and even postbiotic treatments might be personalized in order to achieve the most benefits.

Next, the literature continues to emphasize just how important the gut microbiome is in the early stages of a person’s life. I’ve come across several studies that indicate necrotizing enterocolitis, a leading cause of neonatal morbidity, may respond well to prebiotic and postbiotic treatment. Notice that, for once, probiotics aren’t the hero of the bacterial hour, as it appears that prebiotics and postbiotics may be a safer and more effective method of treatment than probiotics in this circumstance.

When it comes to the normal course of things, however, probiotics still take center stage. Research shows that formula-fed infants have smaller, less productive thymus glands, while breast-fed babies are more likely to have healthy, normal-sized thymuses. The missing piece of the puzzle? Largely, the beneficial Bifidobacteria in mom’s breast milk. These probiotics also play a leading role in development of the child’s gut microbiome, while mothers fed probiotics during breastfeeding have been shown to offer increased immunoprotective properties in their breast milk.

For those of us on the other side of the cradle, scientists have recently found a connection between post-diet weight gain and gut flora. Obese mice were placed on a mini-Weight Watchers diet and then transitioned back to a “normal” Western rodent style of eating. The formerly obese mice quickly surpassed their pre-diet weight, and the one major change that researchers observed was in their gut. Dr. Eran Elinav, head of the research team, noted that “following successful dieting and weight loss, the microbiome retains a ‘memory’ of previous obesity.”

The team began looking into resolutions, and came up with two options: first, to implant formerly obese mice with gut microbes from mice that had never been obese, and second, to supplement with post-biotics. Fecal transplantation is its own conversation, so we won’t go down that road, but the second treatment is an intriguing one. Scientists found that the formerly obese microbiome was degrading the flavonoids in their food at a far greater rate than the non-obese microbiota, which in turn was lowering energy expenditure and inhibiting fat metabolism. By adding flavonoids (a “post-biotic therapy”) to their water, the formerly obese mice didn’t gain any extra weight after returning to a regular diet.

For those with , inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for years, post-biotics appear to offer a new course of promising treatment that might even be a better option than probiotics alone for some. One study published a few years back indicated that certain commonly-administered strains of probiotics can actually have an inflammatory effect on those suffering from IBD. Researchers concluded that “a potent post biotic can… downregulate ongoing inflammatory processes in IBD tissue.”

On the subject of bowels…combined with a good prebiotic, we might just be onto a winning formula for those suffering from gastrointestinal issues. Another study found that prebiotics (in the form of galacto-oligosaccharides) improved both stool frequency and consistency in patients with functional constipation. When combined with a probiotic, however, the resultant synbiotic had an even bigger beneficial effect: significantly improved stool frequency, consistency and reduced transit time. There really is no “I” in team.

A similar synergistic effect has been shown to help with plenty of other aspects of our health, including immune function and oxidative stress.

A Primal Approach to Gut Health

Beyond all the personal details and medical interventions, there’s an underlying message for any avid Primal enthusiast: don’t ignore your gut microbiome. Considering how many different conditions have been linked to gut dysbiosis, there’s little hope for attaining long-term, comprehensive health without a healthy gut.

For those dealing with chronic conditions and wondering about what else they might try, you can consider forking out for fecal genomic testing, work out what bacterial strains work best for you, and seek out optimal synbiotics that work best for your individual gut conditions with the help of a specialist.

For all of us, we can recognize that a well-rounded diet that provides plenty of probiotics and prebiotics will form the fundamental building blocks for optimum and resilient gut health.
