I’m imagining an AU where Alec survived Habitat 7 and remained the Pathfinder. If Alec survived chances are he’d end up with the same exact Tempest crew + the Ryder twin. Like, imagine Alec being the one to have to babysit them and the resident grandpa and the chaos that would ensue.
Example scenarios under the cut
Alec: “Why is everyone still awake? Lights out was three hours ago?!”
Cora: “I tried to tell them we need to go to bed but Liam found a twenty season long anime and they’re marathoning it.”
Liam: *visibly tired* “Just one more episode Alec!”
Alec: “… Regs say you’re supposed to refer to me by my formal name…”
Liam: “Sure thing, Alec!”
-
Alec: “Liam… Ja’al… Where are your clothes?”
Ja’al: “Liam and I are just teaching each other about our people and cultures.”
Alec: “Okay but why do you have to take your clothes off for that?”
Liam and Ja’al: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Alec: “Ryder, get out of the Nomad!”
Ryder: “You’re not my dad.”
Alec: “Get out of the fucking Nomad, I am your dad!”
Ryder: “You’re not my dad!”
Alec: “I am your dad, get out of the fucking Nomad!”
-
Alec: “Excuse me, I don’t remember giving anyone clearance to-“
Drack: “Ah, let the kids be, Alec! I told em they could, they’re fine!”
Alec: “Why must you always undermine my authority…”
-
Alec: “Vetra, where the hell did you get 30 boxes of Blast-ohs cereal?”
Vetra: “… Extranet.”
-
Alec: “At least you listen to me and do your job like you’re supposed to.”
Cora: “Will you adopt me?”
Alec: “… I’m going to bed.”
-
Suvi: “Pathfinder Ryder, I licked a rock again. 🧍‍♀️”
Alec: “I just want to know peace in this life…”
-
Alec: “Peebee, if you don’t keep your pet remnant in your room I’m airlocking it!”
Peebee: “Poc just wants to explore!”
Alec: “Poc will explore the vacuum of space if you don’t put him where he belongs!”
Peebee: “Ugh, fine!”
-
Alec: “Kallo, apologize to Gil for snapping at him.”
Kallo: “but he-“
Alec: *Dad stare™*
Kallo: *grumbling* “I’m sorry…”
Alec: “Like you mean it.”
Kallo: “Fine. I’m sorry for snapping at you, Gil.”
Alec: “Good. Now Gil, apologize to Kallo for not respecting his ship.”
Gil: “But I was just-“
Alec: “One… two…”
Gil: “Alright, alright! I’m sorry for not respecting the Tempest.”
Alec: “Now you two better find a way to compromise or so help me.”
-
Alec: “I didn’t think Pathfinder meant babysitter.”
Lexi: “I didn’t think Doctor meant babysitter either. And yet, here we are.”

Summary: 55,000 years ago, the protheans won a Pyrrhic victory over the reapers. From the ashes of the Prothean Republic and the rusting hulks of the reapers, the ancient asari grew into a galaxy-spanning empire. Two people on opposite sides first meet during an abduction that threatens to upend the tenuous armistice between the Asari Empire and the Terminus Systems. Decades later, they face each other again as forced allies and unwitting political pawns when the galaxy’s three major factions collide.
Chapter 2: Sphere of Influence
55 Tevos 437 Forty years later, one of the last things Thaia had ever expected was to see Aria T’Loak and her most trusted lieutenant, Soraya T’Perro, again. On Omega. On friendly terms. With Thaia being assigned a job by Aria. And Thaia accepting it because she had no choice if she wanted to stay on Omega while waiting for the Omega-4 Relay to be cleared of sabotage from the human terrorist group, Cerberus. All she wanted to do was study it and continue her work with designing and building a prototype relay for the asari, yet here she was, about to be working for Aria T’Loak. “—and I can’t have you idling on my station,” Aria was saying while standing across from Thaia, the large operations table between them. A technical model of Omega’s structure slowly rotated above it, two sections near the mine highlighted, and a third highlighted section at the opposite end. “You’ll be pulling some guard duty.” Please not any of the clubs. Aria signaled to Soraya, who lifted a bag from the floor and set it on the table in front of Thaia. Then she unzipped it, revealing a full kit of low-profile body armor, clothing manufactured from ballistic cloth, and other sundries commandos on personal bodyguard details often used. “I had my people pick up your weapons. Your pistol is in the bag. Your other weapons and belongings are currently being moved to more secure and far better lodgings,” Soraya said, and then studied her for a moment. “Bit of a shithole you were living in.”

N7 Month, 2023 - Day 26: Sword
Gosh I was coming up empty on this one.
++
Ryder hurried through the airlock, hopping to remove pieces of his armor as he belted down the gangway. He stashed his armor and took up the sheath he’d been carrying for the last forty five minutes. He climbed down to B deck and into the medbay.
“Lexi! I need your help with something!” With that, he pulled the sword from its sheath and brandished it up to the light.
“Sure, Ryder, what—Oh goddess!” She turned around just in time to see the gleaming blade swing free of its sheath. “Ryder! Put that away!”
“Sorry,” he replied sheepishly, lowering the blade but staring at it anyway. “I found this while we were on Elaaden. It’s an asari sword!”
“Yes, I can see that…” Lexi eyed Ryder suspiciously, her eyes flicking back and forth between the blade and Ryder’s face.
“I was wondering if you know any tips about it?”
Lexi blinked, stared for a long moment. “…are you serious?” When Ryder only stare open-mouthed, she continued, “No, I absolutely cannot help you! I’m not a huntress! I’m a doctor! How long have you known me, Ryder? If you’re just going to ask any asari I’m sure Peebee would be happy to—”
“Already asked her. She says guns are her thing, not swords,” he was softly cutting the air with the blade again. “I knew it was a long shot, I just figured I’d ask.”
“Really, though,” Lexi scoffed. “It’s like if I walked up to you with a trombash and asked you how to use it just because you’re human and so is it.”
“What’s a trombash?”
“It’s a throwing knife from—see that’s what I mean! And you actually use weapons and you didn’t know how to use that!”
“I’m sorry, Lexi,” Ryder sheathed the sword finally, appeared humbled. “I really didn’t mean to cause offense. Guess I just got a little excited because I’ve seen what these babies can do.”
“You’re forgiven, just… be careful with that, alright?”
“Alright,” then, before he turned: “Say, do you know how to use a trombash?”
Lexi blinked, “…yes, I do, actually.”
“Want to teach me some time?”
“If you find a trombash,” Lexi rolled her eyes, “I’d be happy to teach you what little I know.”
“You’re the best, Lexi.”

you are my daughter
summary:
Upon discovering that his SAM is not compatible with anyone other than his closest relatives, Alec Ryder knows he needs backups. He also knows he can't trust his spineless son as the new Pathfinder.
His daughter, on the other hand, is far simpler. Spew something about building a new society in a new galaxy so that biotics like her don't have to suffer, put her on the Pathfinder team, give her the SAM implant - done. Hard and solid proof that she is his daughter, not some random pilot's. Yes, they didn't speak to each other for a decade, but she is his daughter. She will forever be his daughter.
She is his daughter, no one else's. End of. Case closed.
author's notes:
written for september's prompt fill in the mass effect forever discord server: foreboding. some of the tags won't make sense if you don't read the previous entries of the series, but if you don't have the time, just keep in mind that Alec is a very, very unreliable narrator. The tags are not a joke. I repeat: the tags are not a joke. I can write entire essays on how Alec Ryder is a massive arsehole who sees his family as his possessions instead of actual human beings, but for now, please have this.
For people who haven't read the books or have heard of them but don't know anything about them, the SAM implant incompatibility thing comes from Cora's novel.

Playing Mass Effect Andromeda and seeing that Zaeed's son was there but remembering Zaeed made me realize that I forgot about the ME2 rather quickly. The only ones who really left an imprint were Grunt, Mordin, Thane and Jack. And I only liked Mordin in 3 , I liked Thane because he was actually interesting and fleshed out, I adore Grunt because I like Krogan's anyways and again, I only got really attached to Jack in 3, like I did Mordin.
I forgot all about the Asari milf justice car lady, the thief lady and.... idk who else there was. I remember Garrus and Tali but I'm gonna be honest, even though I like her, I forget Tali exists sometimes and Garrus has been homie since 1 so he's never gonna be forgettable. Even though Tali was in that one too.
I feel more attachment to the crew in Andromeda than the ME2 crew, even though they're kinda meh in their own ways sometimes, but they're honestly funny and I have fun with them. Drack, Jaal, Vetra, Cora, PeeBee, Suvi, Kallo, hell, even Gil and Lexi and I barely talk to those two at all because I find them boring, I barely even talk to Liam's annoying ass, but their background chatter with each is fucking hilarious, walking into the room and seeing Vetra and Jaal tell off Cora over a board game analogy almost made me pee myself.
I never really got moments like that in ME2, unless it was with Garrus.
ME2 was Suicide Squad 2016 while Mass Effect Andromeda was The Suicide Squad 2021. Meanwhile ME3 (even though I haven't finished 3 yet) was Guardians of The Galaxy and ME1 was just... idk, I don't have a movie analogy for it, fucking any military movie.

CONFESSION:
Honestly Lexi is my favorite Asari, she addresses mental health by treating as something that is normal. When I got to that part in Andromeda, I had to stop playing and I cried. All my life I've been told that my depression, anxiety, PTSD, and many other things are a result of me not trying hard enough. It felt like someone, even if fictional, understands that mental health is a normal, every day occurrence.

Title: Growing Pains
Fandom: Mass Effect
Characters: Alex Shepard, Pathfinder Ishara, several Asari OCs, Aria T’Loak, Lexi T’Perro
Relationships: Shepard & Ishara, Shepard & sisters, Shepard/Asari OC
Tags: Kid!Shepard, teen!Shepard, Gender exploration, illness, bullying, angst, fluff, backstory, first kiss, first love, biotics manifestation, gnc!Shepard, meditation, mind meld, xenophobia, xenophobic language, misogynistic language, anxiety, arabic, egyptian, fist fight, injuries
Summary: Alex Shepard hopped a cargo ship with an unknown destination when he was twelve and ended up in the Asari colony of Blackdamp on Asteria. He liked the colony, and when he told Ishara—the Asari who found him in the streets—that he’d rather stay in Blackdamp than be sent to the human colony on the other side of the planet, she adopted him.
These are snapshots of Alex’s teen years, one per year, starting at the age of 13 and continuing to the age of 18.
Notes after the cut.
Read the First Chapter Here
Notes: First and foremost, this fic came into existence because I was working on my novelization of the ME1 timeline for Alex Shepard, and I realized that I was having a hard time being in his head to write because I didn’t know him well enough. So after several conversations with a bunch of people, I decided I needed to actually write some of his backstory.
Second: I’ve tagged gnc!shepard, even though there isn’t a whole lot in this fic that’s him glaringly being gender nonconforming (at least in my opinion there isn’t). He was 12 when he left Earth, which is certainly old enough to have a basic concept of gender and gender roles that are part of the human standard. But the Asari are a monogendered species, and that means their cultural concepts of gender are going to be significantly different than human concepts. Given that Alex spends most of his teen years completely immersed in Asari culture, I felt like his own concepts relating to gender probably wouldn’t match up directly with the human standard.
Third: Through some research, I discovered that the one or two Asari words canon gives us seem to be based in Akkadian. Now, as a non-academic person, finding someone who knows Akkadian is kind of difficult. I was, however, able to find someone who speaks Arabic, and I’ve adopted some of the language in this fic. I’ve done my absolute best to make sure I’m using words correctly! Translations will be provided in the end-notes for each chapter.
A huge thank you to CrimsonShield75 for taking the time to give me a solid list of Arabic vocabulary and a bit of a syntax lesson. I really appreciate it so much.
Also a huge thank you to all the people in the Kaidan server because y’all have helped me so much with fleshing Alex out as a character.
A very specific thank you to Redamber79 for constantly being my sounding board, letting me talk at you when I was having trouble working something out, and reading the 50 bajillion snippets I send daily. Love you bestie!
Thanks to @imbiowaresbitch, @bleuzombie for alpha reading this for me! And to @nickelkeep for the beta!
Fic is completely wriiten, edited, and drafted into AO3, and will be posting weekly on Thursdays!

Playing Mass Effect Andromeda again and just realized something: Liam accused Peebee of the same thing she basically accused Lexi of: using the crew for their own personal gain, without any real connection to them.

Tessellation: Chapter 40
Tumblr media
Fandom: Mass Effect
Relationship(s): Original Asari Character | Thaia Kallistrate/Lexi T’Perro; Cora Harper/Janae (background)
Rating: M
Characters: Lexi T’Perro, Thaia Kallistrate, The Entire Tempest Crew, Lots of People from the Nexus, Also the Initiative People in General, And Some Outcasts, Everyone, Basically.
Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Mutual Pining, Not So Secret Crush, Best Friends, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Angst, Angst and Humor, Hurt/Comfort, Longfic
Summary: After becoming fast best friends—if she’s sharing the jail cell with you, she’s your best friend—in the weeks before the Initiative’s departure from the Milky Way, Lexi and Thaia agree to resume their friendship in Andromeda. With Lexi assigned to the Hyperion and Thaia to the Nexus, they know it might be difficult to find each other again. Then everything goes to shit in the Heleus Cluster. In the mess the Initiative’s become and the mission to salvage it, they both have to recover who they were as they discover what they are.
Ark Paarchero, 2820. It was easy to forget—at least for Ryder—the sheer size of the Initiative’s arks. Without trams and elevators, it was a slow, unsettling slog through a ship sixteen football fields long containing two arkholds that were almost three football fields tall apiece. Plus each of those arkholds held thirty decks apiece. Ryder got tired just thinking about it. The dim standby lighting and the kett equipment scattered through the eerily empty corridors didn’t help it be less creepy, either. Another thing that didn’t help was the unease building up in her gut at not having heard from Thaia and Cora for the entire trip from arkhold to arkhold. Ryder and her team had finished their morning PT-like group run and drawn to a collective halt at the entrance to the cryobay containing the pods for Jeks Arlan and Vadim Escondar and still nothing. “We should’ve heard from Armali by now,” Ryder said as they walked through the doorway into the sterile, empty medical bay lit only by emergency lights. “What if they’re dead?” Drack shrugged. “Archon would’ve been bragging already. They’re fine.” “That doesn’t help me feel better.” “I dunno,” Peebee said, checking over equipment covered like it would have been during transit, labels and seals indicating an intact stasis state. “I think he has a pretty good point. Whenever the Archon gets one over on us, he doesn’t really keep it to himself.”
