In a year of hard fighting since taking delivery of its first 71 German-made Leopard 2 tanks, the Ukrainian army has lost—according to Oryx—at least 12 of the tanks.
But the losses aren’t the reason the army is struggling to generate combat-ready Leopard 2s. Many more Leopard 2s have been damaged than have been destroyed—and the Ukrainians are having real problems getting the damaged tanks fixed and returned to service.[...]
As many as 59 Leopard 2s in theory remain in Ukrainian service. But in reality, potentially dozens of the intact tanks are out of service for want of repairs. When German T.V. network NTV visited a Leopard 2A6 platoon this month, just one of the unit’s four tanks was combat-ready.
German Green Party politician Sebastian Schäfer went looking for answers, and found them in Lithuania, where German firms Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann run a workshop that fixes Leopard 2A6s and Strv 122s. Leopard 2A4s go to Poland for repairs. “Only a very small number of the main battle tanks delivered can still be used by Ukraine,” Schäfer reported.
There’s a shortage of spares at the front line and at the repair center. This should come as no surprise to close observers of Germany’s long military decline since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Desperate for parts and eager to fix their tanks themselves, the Ukrainians tend to remove parts from the most badly-damaged Leopard 2s before loading them onto trucks and trains for transport to Poland or Lithuania, Maj. Gen. Christian Freuding explained. [...]
But this cannibalization means the workers at the repairs centers have to fix battlefield damage and replace stripped parts. The repair centers aren’t just fixing tanks, they’re “rebuilding” them, Freuding said.[...]
Ukrainian defense planners meanwhile have chopped the 47th Brigade’s surviving Leopard 2A6s to the 21st Brigade, consolidating those tanks with the remaining Strv 122s in order to simplify their logistics.
And The Netherlands and Germany are beginning to deliver, presumably to the 33rd Brigade, 14 fresh Leopard 2A4s.
But the longer-term fix requires German industry to produce tank parts. Lots of them. And consistently.
Maybe there's a lesson to be learned here about the efficacy of flashy expensive military hardware in actual combat against a peer/near-peer competitor. Maybe not tho! [22 Jan 24]

Okay, I have a thoroughly evil scenario for you.
You are a defense minister. Your country has inherited some Leopard 2A4s from the previous authoritarian regime, who inherited them from the people before them. Yay, Leopards, right?
However, the soldiers of the previous two regimes did not treat the tanks well, so they alresdy had many issues, and the last guys attempted active sabotage on the way out, damaging their key components and supporting infrastructure such that: to repair the broken components would be too costly and the infrastructure does not exist anymore, but replacing the tanks would be even costlier. Both options are not on the table.
Furthermore, your country is still under international sanctions and arms embargoes for crimes that may or may not have been committed by the new regime (in the process of deposing the old regime) and/or the old regime (in the process of maintaining power).
You cannot source new Leopard parts or entire new tanks, as the Germans will not trade with you.
You can only access the same contacts as the previous regime had (Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, etc). They will be happy to sell you their domestic tank components to fix your tanks. But getting new tanks from them is also out of your price range.
Assuming all key components (engine, sensors, gun, transmission, etc) save the armor itself (which is intact) will be replaced...
What do you use to desecrate your Leopards, in order to bring them to functioning state and have be the best actual tanks they can be again?
Why. What did I do to you? Was I not a good tankman?
Fine. Fine. I've prayed to Percy Hobart for strength, and I've assembled my list. Here we go.
Gun: 2A46M-5 125mm smoothbore out of the T-90M and T80BVM
Engine: V-92S2-F, from the T-90M
Transmission: the 5-speed in the T-80BVM
APS/ERA: Relikt ERA and Arena APS
Secondary armament: the remote weapons pod on the T90M
Sensors and C4I integration: T90M
Are you happy? Have you gotten your sick satisfaction?

Abrams Tanks May Have Some Problems in Ukraine - How Serious Are They? - Technology Org
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using a bunch of different types of Western tanks. Those include German Leopard 1 and 2 tanks, British Challenger 2 and, of course, at least 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks. All of these tanks have certain peculiarities about them and crews have to be prepared for each of these types individually. However, the Abrams main battle tank may pose the most serious problems.
Ukraine absolutely needs main battle tanks. The more the better. And the more advanced the better. However, the West lived in peace for so long that the tank reserves are not that great. NATO countries don’t have that many tanks to spare actually.
On top of that, the choices of which tanks to supply need to be made in a smart way, because Ukraine does not have any experience with the Western-designed tanks, there is no servicing or ammo supply infrastructure there.
M1 Abrams tanks are special in many ways. They also require special care. Image credit: Oregon National Guard via Wikimedia
And now the Ukrainian Ground Forces have a mish-mash of tanks, which have their own peculiarities:
The Leopard 1A5 is not only the oldest in its architecture, but also has a rifled 105 mm gun. This means that it needs special ammunition, which is not common in NATO anymore.
The Leopard 2s are the most standard, but Ukraine is getting a bunch of different versions of this tank, including 2A4s, 2A5s, 2A5s (Stridsvagn 122) and 2A6s. There are differences between these versions that need to be learned in training.
The Challenger 2 is of the same era as the Leopard 2, but it uses a rifled 120 mm gun, which also required special ammunition.
Finally, the M1A1 Abrams can share ammo with the Leopard 2, but has a multi-fuel turbine engine, instead of a regular reciprocating engine with cylinders and pistons.
Abrams tanks can burn any fuel – diesel, petrol, vodka, doesn’t matter. They are powerful and resilient. However, these gas turbine engines do need a lot of care.
Forbes writes that despite the engines in the Abrams tanks costing an unbelievable amount of money, they can succumb to dust and debris if the crews don’t maintain the filters very well. This is something crews learn during long months of training, but the Ukrainian tankmen had to learn this very quickly.
If the tank filters are not cleaned every 12 hours or so, the damage can be so severe that the engine and possibly the transmission will need to be replaced. Obviously, in a battlefield that could bring the tank to a tragic ending.
How do you clean the filters? Ukrainian Abrams crews will have to rev the tank’s engine to redline twice a day to start the pulse-jet system and blow air through the filters clearing out the dust and debris.

Even with the filters being kept up to, the Arbams will cause some issues to the Ukrainian Ground Forces. These tanks use a lot of fuel and require deep maintenance, which will have to be performed in Poland. Getting them there will not be easy either, because the Abrams is rather heavy at over 62 tonnes.
However, the effectiveness of the main battle tank mostly depends on the tactics. And if the defenders of Ukraine manage to exploit the strong sides of the Abrams well, these tanks will do a lot of damage to the Russian invaders.

Daily Wrap Up March 22-23, 2023
Under the cut:
Ukrainian troops, on the defensive for four months, will launch a long-awaited counterassault "very soon" now that Russia's huge winter offensive is losing steam without taking Bakhmut, Ukraine's top ground forces commander said on Thursday. The remarks were the strongest indication yet from Kyiv that it is close to shifting tactics, having absorbed Russia's onslaught through a brutal winter.
Spain is expected to send its first shipment of modern battle tanks to Ukraine by the end of next week, once officials have completed final firing tests in the field, the Spanish Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday. The six Leopard 2A4 tanks have been undergoing final checks at a weapons factory near Seville in southern Spain, the statement said.
Finland has pledged three more Leopard 2 tanks from its arsenal to Ukraine, bringing the total to six, MTV Uutiset reported on March 23.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) responded on March 23 to threats made by Russia, expressing regret over the country's attempts to obstruct "international efforts to ensure accountability" for violations of international law. "The Presidency of the Assembly emphasizes that the Court, its elected officials, and its staff have the strong support of the Assembly of State Parties to the Rome Statute," the statement read. "We reaffirm its full confidence in the Court as an independent and impartial judicial institution and reiterate our strong commitment to uphold and defend the principles and values enshrined in the Rome Statute and to preserve its integrity undeterred by any threats," the statement added.
Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, has signed legislation to make his country part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) during a ceremony on Thursday.
“Ukrainian troops, on the defensive for four months, will launch a long-awaited counterassault "very soon" now that Russia's huge winter offensive is losing steam without taking Bakhmut, Ukraine's top ground forces commander said on Thursday.
The remarks were the strongest indication yet from Kyiv that it is close to shifting tactics, having absorbed Russia's onslaught through a brutal winter.
Russia's Wagner mercenaries "are losing considerable strength and are running out of steam", Kyiv's ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a social media post.
"Very soon, we will take advantage of this opportunity, as we did in the past near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliya and Kupiansk," he said, listing Ukrainian counteroffensives last year that recaptured swathes of land.
There was no immediate response from Moscow to the latest suggestions its forces in Bakhmut were losing momentum, but Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has issued pessimistic statements in recent days warning of a Ukrainian counterassault.
On Monday, Prigozhin published a letter to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, saying Ukraine aimed to cut off Wagner's forces from Russia's regular troops.
Reuters journalists near the front line north of Bakhmut saw signs consistent with the claim that the Russian offensive in the area could be flagging. At a Ukrainian-held village west of Soledar, on Bakhmut's northern outskirts, the intensity of the Russian bombardment had noticeably lessened compared with another visit nearby just two days earlier.
"It was really hot here a week ago, but in the last three days it has been more quiet," said a Ukrainian soldier who used the call sign "Kamin", or "Stone".
"We can see this in the enemy's air strikes. If before there were 5-6 air raids in a day, today we had only one helicopter attack and it was too far and so ineffective," said the soldier, a member of an anti-aircraft unit in the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade.
A slow-down in Russia's assault on Bakhmut could be in part a consequence of Moscow diverting its troops and resources to other areas. Britain said on Thursday that Russian troops had been making gains further north this month, partially regaining control over the approaches to the town of Kreminna, a Ukrainian target. Intense battles were also under way further south.
But any shift in momentum in Bakhmut, if confirmed, would be remarkable given the city's symbolic importance as the focus of Russia's offensive, and the scale of the losses on both sides there in Europe's bloodiest infantry battle since World War Two.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged Europe to provide more weapons, faster to his forces and impose additional sanctions on Russia, warning the war could otherwise drag on for years.
"If Europe waits, the evil may have time to regroup and prepare for years of war. It is in your power to prevent this," a clearly frustrated Zelenskiy said in a video address to European Union leaders, delivered from a train.”-via Reuters

“Spain is expected to send its first shipment of modern battle tanks to Ukraine by the end of next week, once officials have completed final firing tests in the field, the Spanish Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday.
The six Leopard 2A4 tanks have been undergoing final checks at a weapons factory near Seville in southern Spain, the statement said.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles visited the factory Thursday and said four more Leopard tanks due for Ukraine will arrive there soon for inspection and testing.
The first group of Ukrainian troops to learn how to operate the Spanish tanks are wrapping up training at a military base in northern Spain, the Defense Ministry announced last week.
Some background: Robles initially told Spain's parliament last month that the country would send six Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
A day later, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made a surprise visit to Kyiv on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced Spain would bump its commitment to 10 fighting vehicles.”-via CNN

“Finland has pledged three more Leopard 2 tanks from its arsenal to Ukraine, bringing the total to six, MTV Uutiset reported on March 23.
Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen also confirmed that Ukraine had approached Finland's Defense Ministry about supplying F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets.
Kaikkonen said that Finland "will respond to this query in due time," as cited by MTV Uutiset.
The transfer is part of Finland's 14th defense aid package to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
Finland will also provide Ukraine with training relating to the use and maintenance of the tanks.”-via Kyiv Independent
~
“Slovakia has handed four of its Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets over to Ukraine, the country’s Defense Minister Jaro Nad said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
This comes days after the country pledged 13 Mig-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, along with Poland which pledged four.
On the question of a military advantage, Russia has been dismissive, claiming the gift of more Soviet-era MiGs to Ukraine will not alter the course of the conflict. Which might be why it is F-16s – and not MiGs – that are in fact at the top of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s wish list.
MiG-29s are analog aircraft, using older flight technology. Zelensky’s sought-after F-16s are digital. MiGs can be used for short combat missions, they can deploy weaponry and shoot down Russian aircraft with good maneuverability at short range. But F-16s can fly for longer, are more versatile, possess integrated weapons systems and have dramatically better long range and radar capability, therefore providing improved early warning.”-via CNN

“The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) responded on March 23 to threats made by Russia, expressing regret over the country's attempts to obstruct "international efforts to ensure accountability" for violations of international law.

"We reaffirm its full confidence in the Court as an independent and impartial judicial institution and reiterate our strong commitment to uphold and defend the principles and values enshrined in the Rome Statute and to preserve its integrity undeterred by any threats," the statement added.
The ICC issued arrest warrants on March 17 for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian official overseeing the forced deportations of over 16,000 Ukrainian children to Russia.
In its statement, the ICC wrote that it believes Putin “bears individual criminal responsibility” as the leader of Russia for the crimes committed against Ukrainian children.
Russian ex-President Dmitriy Medvedev went on to threaten a missile strike against the Hague on March 20.
"Everyone walks under God and missiles. It's quite possible to envision a scenario where a Russian ship stationed in the North Sea could strategically strike the Hague courthouse with a hypersonic Onyx (cruise) missile," Medvedev, who is currently the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, wrote.
He went on to warn judges of the International Criminal Court to "look carefully at the sky."
Russian investigators also announced on March 20 that they had opened a case against members of the ICC for issuing the arrest warrants.
Namely, the Investigative Committee of Russia targeted ICC prosecutor Karim Khan, as well as judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez.
According to a press release, the committee is accusing the ICC of "bringing a known innocent person to criminal responsibility" and preparing "an attack on a representative of a foreign state who enjoys international protection, with the aim of complicating international relations."
Russia withdrew from the ICC in 2016 after the international organization criticized its illegal annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, meaning that Putin cannot be arrested unless he sets foot in one of the 123 countries that are party to the court.”-via Kyiv Independent

“Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, has signed legislation to make his country part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) during a ceremony on Thursday.
Last year, Finland sought to join the military alliance in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, and legislation incorporating Nato’s founding treaties was passed in parliament in Helsinki on 1 March.
Hungary and Turkey, the only Nato members that have yet to ratify Finland’s membership, have both signalled they will soon do so.”-via The Guardian

[Another German-made Leopard 2A4 destroyed somewhere in the SVO Zone]
🇷🇺🇺🇦 UPDATE ON THE STATE OF OPERATIONS BY THE RUSSIAN ARMED FORCES IN THE SPECIAL MILITARY OPERATION IN UKRAINE
Update on the SVO for Sunday, December 3rd, 2023:
The @wargonzo channel is conducting a week-long analysis of the fighting in Ukraine.
Kherson-Crimean direction:
The main attention is focused on the situation in Krynki. There are difficulties here for both sides. The positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the village are closely processed by FABs every day. At the same time, Ukrainian soldiers managed to partially enter the forest plantation. This fact, however, has absolutely no effect on the balance of power. The tactical bridgehead of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has not developed into an operational one. But on the islands on the left bank of the Dnieper, Ukrainian troops dominate. And the landing of Ukrainian marines in other areas is quite possible.
Zaporozhye direction:
The Ukrainian “pocket” near the village of Rabotino did not become full of holes, but was “sewn up” by Russian troops. The Ukrainian Armed Forces' attacks were concentrated only to the northwest of Verbovoy. There is no movement. True, the height is beyond them. The Russian Armed Forces periodically counterattacked. With the same result.
Ugledar direction:
We can say that at the moment it is already “frozen”. The Russian Armed Forces have improved their positions northwest of Staromayorsky. As if that's all.
Donetsk direction:
And here it is “hot summer”. Thunder and lightning on both sides. The Russian Armed Forces occupied most of Maryinka and advanced to the North west of Avdeevka. The Ukrainian Armed Forces were knocked out of the industrial zone southeast of the city. There is no place to stay there anymore. To the north of Avdeevka, the Russian Armed Forces managed to get past the railway line near Stepnoye. The village is in the “gray zone”. The expansion of the zone of control of Russian troops in the direction of Novokalinov is obvious, but it can also create a problem in the event of a flank attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Bakhmut direction:
The Russian Armed Forces attacked north-west of Kleshcheevka for a whole week, trying to dislodge the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the dominant heights. The Ukrainians held their positions. But north of Bakhmut they lost Khromoe. In addition, north of Bakhmut they retreated to Bogdanovka. The village is being held for now, but the option of retreat is not excluded.
Lugansk direction:
The Russian Armed Forces made a tactical breakthrough in the Ternov area. This area has been dormant for a long time. What's the importance? Cutting off the Ukrainian Armed Forces' bridgehead on the left bank of the Zherebets River. So far this has not happened. The attacks of Russian troops on Sinkovka with the prospect of reaching Kupyansk did not produce results. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are mining everything well. Sometimes they retreat tactically, but return after serious work on the RF Armed Forces by their artillery.
