The fics of the February flashfic challenge: a round-up!
Yesterday we had the MFMM flashfic challenge, and whoah – what a wonderful response we had!
No less than 30 fics were written during that one day, and this is a new record for an MFMM flashfic event! 17 writers participated, and more than one of them wrote either their first MFMM fanfic, or their first flashfic – so extra kudos to you for diving in!
Two writers managed to write for all four time slots, which is a first for the flashfic challenge! We are very impressed, @galadriel1010 and Piratesandpixiedust! And the latter even wrote a series of four fics that all go together.
All in all, 22 prompts were used over the heats. Most popular, resulting in three fics, was the tag combination “Shouldn't you be sleeping? // an unexpected guest // snarky Mac”.
Those are the stats. Excellent work, all – we swear that the blood, sweat, and tears were visible across all time zones of the world!

Favorite time of the year:
Fall. Not that we get much of one, anymore. But I love halloween and when the days are warm and the nights are cool. I love fires and crunchy leaves and all that. Winter is too christmas and spring is too sneezy and summer is apparently living in Satan's buttcrack so...
Comfort foods:
My nana's tacos. My mom's chicken enchiladas. My own chicken paprikash over mashed potatoes. And my bestie's baked mushroom pork chops.

Dogs, apparently. Briard stuff. I have held onto the most important pieces of XF mementos. A couple miss fisher things. I have a decent funko collection but it's packed away.

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
I guess that would have been Scarecrow & Mrs King. It was the late 90s and I have fond memories of it. I chatted online, read and wrote fic, and I even had an SMK geocities page. I was really into other shows at that point too, but that was the one I remember the most.
13. Any NoTPs?
Not really. I guess there are some pairings that I don’t understand, but none that I am against.
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
“Help Me Say Goodbye” (Miss Fisher) It’s not perfect, but it is probably my favorite fic that I have written. From the first time I watched “King Memses’ Curse” I knew I wanted to dive into the emotions that Phryne was feeling at the grave site. It had been nearly 10 years since I had written anything other than research papers, so I was pretty nervous to write fiction again. This show is so full of opportunities to dive into the character’s emotions, and I LOVE IT.

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
Gush. I love fanfiction. I love to write fanfiction. I love to read fanfiction. I love the people who write fanfiction, and I love the passion they have for the fandoms they write for, so to talk about just one thing is hard. But I guess the best thing about it is that it made me feel like I wasn’t the only one. Before I even knew that there was such a thing as fanfiction, I would create stories for my favorite characters (mostly in my head, but eventually I started writing them down). I never thought that it was weird that I did that, but I certainly didn’t know anyone else who did it, so it was kind of a lonely feeling. It seemed like everyone else like shows a reasonable amount and I was the only one who obsessed over everything. So when I discovered fanfiction, it opened my world and I suddenly didn’t feel so alone. I found people to chat with about characters and timelines and possibilities.

“Alright. No more champagne for you.” Jack swiftly removed the glass out of her hand with an elegant sweep of his elbow. “Why don’t we have a dance?” He offered, hoping to distract her.
“You don’t dance.”
“I dance with you.” He defended as he offered her his hand.
“You do at that.” She smiled and gave her hand to him. “You know Jack, most people find London society stifles them, I think it’s rather loosened you up.” She commented.
“Do you?” He asked as he spun her around. “You don’t think it’s the life of leisure spent wandering the streets of London by day and making love to a beautiful woman by night? No murderers or gangs, no bureaucratic red tape, no ex-wives.”
“Well, when you put it like that…” She smiled as she spun again and he pulled her close against him."

Can I ask 9, 12 and 20 from the Deed Fic Writer asks
9. what's your writing process like?
I was so tempted to just put a gif of the keystone cops running around here and call it a day, you have no idea. 😂
Ok, so genuine answer... usually I get an idea (either a prompt from someone else or an "oooooh wouldn't THAT be interesting to explore?" from myself) and then I spend the next couple days if it's a short story or six to ten weeks if it's long one just adding notes about it to a file on my phone. Anything from plot points to dialogue to things to look up later. The last time I did this for a long fic I had 10K words before I even started a google doc.
I do not recommend this method.
Not the jotting ideas down as they come, that's actually great, 10/10 it helps my Swiss cheese brain actually remember things I've come up with and I love it. It's the getting SO much random stuff down before I ever start the real WRITING part that I don't recommend, because then I often wind up writing more than one story — inevitably when I throw all that spaghetti at the wall some stuff winds up contradicting other stuff, some just doesn't make sense against the story that eventually takes shape, etc. and then I have to kill a lot of darlings I didn't even need to have in the first place. Which is not to say that's not the regular process of a first draft, I just wish I was starting the real writing part — and not the suuuuuper long brainstorming part — a lot earlier these days.
12. What’s your perfect environment to create/write?
Some kind of background noise (usually music), comfortable chair/desk set up, and a significant chunk of time to work. Time is the big one right now. For a while now I've only managed to carve out writing time for a few min a day and when I'm trying to write anything of length, that just gets demoralizing. It's a real life issue I hope gets a little better in the not too distant future, but for now, it's where I am.
20. What’s the greatest gift you’ve gotten from your writing?
The friends I've made along the way. 😂 No, but yes, that really is it. Not just the other people in fandom — who I have found to be some of the loveliest people ever, yourself included — but also collaborative partners like @arlome and @lechatnoir1918. I have met so many interesting people though my writing, and I just consider myself the luckiest duck on earth that we drifted into each other's orbits this way. ❤️

I tried once. It was terrible and I have since deleted it. Maybe one day I will try again.

I doubt it.

Oh No One is Alone, for sure. Readers have lost interest, as have I. Plus it was the first chapter fic I ever began, and my writing style has changed so much now that i find it hard to go back and write like that.

Dialogue. Thanks to years of writing scripts for my drama degree

I would only do it if i was completely proficient in that language, and since i’m not fluent in any other language, Its not likely to happen.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries.
Unless you count ‘Leonardo Place’ which was the mash up of every single Leonardo DiCaprio film me and my friends wrote back in the 90′s when we were in high school. Based on Melrose Place it was full of absolute stupidity and dumb things like Phillipe from Man in the Iron Mask falling in love with Cal from Titanic. Or something equally as crazy!🤣 Would love to know if i still have that stashed somewhere or if i chucked it
