I really loved this dress, it was a more comfortable and unique version of 2B than my normal cosplay, and was actually completed first (And in just a few days at that lol) Unfortunately it no long fits comfortably so I had to retire it. Well, I can’t really say with confidence when I will next be at a convention or doing any cosplaying at all. I’m really trying to be strict with my finances, and focus on my personal life. (As if I wasn’t enough of a hermit.) On top of just focusing on those nearest and dearest to me, and not being as reliant on social media...I’m just really over the cosplay community as a whole. I just don’t like what I’m seeing, there’s a lot of negativity, drama and contests of show going on. I don’t want to get involved and the more that happens, the more I pull away and shut myself off from something. I’m also not a cute young teen or young adult anymore, and I have a dog to worry about. And let me tell you: costuming is always a net negative for me money wise, especially conventions. So as always, we will see what happens. I really don’t think I’d be missed or that my presence added much of anything for anyone. Had a fun time at Long Beach Comic Con this weekend! First larger con that I’ve done, so that was pretty cool. Got to do some sketches, AND Mairghread Scott was there! (Definitely check out Batgirl Annual #2 and Batgirl #26, folks. They’re very good.)

And I got rid of ALL...of my business cards! XD I have stock left over, so I’ll be updating my online store soon. Stay tuned!

Long Beach Comic Con 2018 had a major issue with disability access that they have refused to publicly acknowledge, apologize for, or commit to addressing for their 2019 shows.

As some of you know, I am disabled - I have fibromyalgia and am dependent on a cane when attending cons. At Long Beach Comic Con 2018 last year, convention staff made several decisions that made it very difficult for disabled attendees like myself to get around.

Probably the biggest choice they made was to actively close off one of the main convention center elevators, taping over the buttons and actively roping off the door. The elevator was functional - neither con staff nor security could explain why it had been closed. Con staff blamed the Long Beach Convention Center staff for the decision, while the convention center told me that it was a decision Long Beach Comic Con had made.

They also made people exit the con by going down one flight of stairs, through the panel hall rooms, and up another flight of stairs, as opposed to simply walking out a door that was right there leading out onto the street. @mandyquesadilla had to argue with a member of staff in order to get me out of the convention center without making me struggle with two flights of stairs.

This is particularly hilarious because I was there to participate in a panel on invisible illness and disability - a panel that the target audience couldn’t reach because the main elevator had been shut down.

When I posted about this publicly, both on Twitter and on Facebook, I was contacted via Facebook by Martha Donato - President of MAD Event Management who handle both Long Beach Comic Con and Long Beach Comic Expo. I got what appeared to be a boilerplate apology designed to placate me and make me feel better. When I asked whether a public apology would be offered to the hundreds of disabled attendees who attended the con and had issues getting in and out of the event, and whether the con would be making a public commitment to improved disabled access to their events, I got no response. I know the message was seen. But they chose to ignore my questions, and they’ve ignored me every time since that I’ve reached out.

(For those wondering: I did file an ADA complaint, but I got a letter back from the DoJ telling me that they can’t investigate every complaint because they don’t have the resources, and they wouldn’t be looking into this one.)

Over the weekend I noticed that the Long Beach Comic Con Twitter account had changed to promote Long Beach Comic Expo, but rather than just change the name they also changed the handle - @LBComicCon had become @LBComicExpo. I wondered whether they’d set up a placeholder account to preserve the old name for when they want to start promoting Long Beach Comic Con again.

They hadn’t. So, naturally, I snapped it up. Mandy noticed they’d done the same with their Instagram account, so we snagged that one too.

We’re using the accounts to call attention to Long Beach Comic Con’s active disinterest in serving their disabled attendees. We’re calling on Long Beach Comic Con, Long Beach Comic Expo, and MAD Event Management to publicly commit to improved disability access. Once they do that, we will happily hand over the keys to these accounts.

Their response to discovering these accounts exist was to block us on social media.

We will continue to use the @LBComicCon Twitter and @longbeachcomiccon Instagram to highlight their poor treatment of disabled attendees, as well as accessibility issues at other cons, until they are willing to commit to improvements.

Wow, #2018 was definitely the year of #dolores! I made two versions of her, hand painted three versions of her jacket trim, and dyed twelve yards of outer fabric to make two skirts and the jacket. Including the two versions of Dolores, I think I finished or debuted seven new cosplays last year (finished Morticia, wore Hippolyta, Syd Barrett from Legion, Jareth, Tilda, Riza Hawkeye), plus one more version of Tilda that's still mostly complete back in California. And most of that was between February and August! I started actually competing in cosplay contests, and after walking out after WonderCon with an honorable mention from the con and a workmanship award from #costumecon I won four more awards from three cons before starting school in September, including best craftsmanship at #lbcc2018 It's been an insane, weird, amazing year, and I learned a ton and met so many amazing new people. All the stuff I've had to learn for crafting stuff (dyeing, corsetry, wet forming leather) and all the events I've made it to make whatever else I have to learn to do this year seem far more possible. Life is really funny. I’ve watched so many fellow cosplayers evolve over the years. People who started around the same time I did, now with hundreds of thousands of followers and recognition. I used to wonder “What did I do differently? What did I do so wrong? Am I not beautiful enough? Are my costumes no good? Can people not relate to me or reach out to me?” And then I realized: cosplay is my hobby. It’s evolved for me. I am moving away from cons and more into charity. I have removed myself from the community as a whole due to my personal life, my want of privacy and how toxic the overall community can be. I keep myself out of spotlight. I’m an introvert and I want to keep my circle of friends close and small. Sure, the temptation of “fame” is always appealing. But what I desire more is healing myself, loving myself and living a life I find fulfilling.
