Every Actress I Have Ever Imagined Playing Riza Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson (it’d be hard for me to see her as another iconic badass woman post-Nat but hot dang do those characters have some similarities
Carey Mulligan
Saiorse Ronan (younger Saiorse would have been my DREAM Winry but she’s starting to edge into Riza territory)
also maybe Florence Pugh (I thought she’d need a couple more years but cue all the commenters telling me they’re the SAME AGE o o p s)
Anna Torv (even though I haven’t watched Fringe)
Rosamund Pike circa Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth Mitchell circa LOST
Claire Danes circa… earlier Homeland?
Jodie Foster circa Silence of the Lambs
Elizabeth Moss (can you imagine. The PERFECTION)
would 100% support Zendaya even if she doesn’t look exactly like her
For a musical version Caissie Levy or Brittain Ashford would be insanely dope but mostly I just wanna play her so badly guysssss
meanwhile I can’t think of any actors who are currently perfect for Roy (Daniel Henney or Ben Barnes would be fabulous if you aged them down 5-10 years or so) but I can think of at least two ideal genderbends (Michelle Dockery or Laura Donnelly no I don’t care that they’re British)

4 HBO Max Shows We've Loved Recently
With the Emmy nominations being released last week, and HBO leading all the networks with 130 nominations, I thought it would be fun to share some of the shows we’ve been watching lately on HBO Max, which has quickly become one of our favorite streaming services. Here are our favorites based on what type of mood you’re in, and feel free to click on the show to watch the trailer for it:
If you’re in the mood for: A comedy that will make you laugh the entire episode but tug at your heartstrings the whole time:
Hacks
We just finished this show the other night and already miss it. It’s been decided (decades ago): Jean Smart is an icon and can do no wrong. She is absolutely heartbreaking in Hacks, a comedy about legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance, who has had a Las Vegas residency for years but whose career is not exactly what it used to be. To try to revive it, her team hires a 20-something down-on-her-luck comedy writer Ava to help make make her hip and cool again. It’s the perfect blend of comedy with heartfelt life lessons, and the dynamic/relationship between Deborah and Ava make them the best onscreen duo we’ve seen in years. We can’t wait for season two!
Wikipedia summary: “Deborah Vance is a legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedy diva, trying to maintain relevance as the venue manager tries to pare down on her performance dates. Ava is a Gen Z comedy writer who is unable to find work due to being "canceled" over an insensitive tweet. The two reluctantly team up to freshen up Vance's material and learn to respect each other's differences.”
If you’re in the mood for: A riveting mystery with a deep character study and a career-best performance from Kate Winslet:
Mare of Easttown
Everyone needs to know who Mare is. I want to be friends with Mare. I miss her. This show’s portrayal of a woman who has had a rough life but who cares so deeply about her work, her family, and doing the right thing (even if she always feels like she isn't) is so real and raw that I sometimes forgot it was a cop show. But that’s probably because its so much more than just a cop show. It’s a family drama, a character study, and a mystery all expertly wrapped into one show. And don’t even get me started on her Delco accent. Pure genius. Expect this one to win all the Emmy’s.
Wikipedia summary: “In a suburb of Philadelphia, a detective named Mare Sheehan investigates the recent murder of a teenage mother while trying to keep her own life from falling apart. Mare is a local hero, having been the star of a high-school basketball championship game 25 years ago. She has also been unable to solve the case of another missing young girl for a year, leading many in the community to doubt her detective skills. Her personal troubles include a divorce, a son lost to suicide, and a custody battle with her ex-heroin addict former daughter-in-law over Mare's grandson”
If you’re in the mood for: A Euphoria-like show to tide you over until the second season comes out but then you realize it stands alone and is just as good:
Genera+ion
At first glance, I assumed this would be a Euphoria knock-off, but after watching the first episode I quickly realized that couldn’t be further from the truth. Generation stands on its own and carves its path as a unique teen drama filled with dialogue that sounds like it was actually written by a teenager. Set in Orange County, California, the characters behave like high schoolers behave and nothing feels force or contrived. The performances are out of this world good, and like Mare, I often forgot we were watching a television series at all; it felt more like a documentary of modern day teens going through all the drama teens go through. Yes, there is partying, drugs, nudity and some heartbreaking scenes, but isn’t that what being a teenager trying to figure out who they are and going through all the emotions is all about?
Wikipedia summary: “Featuring an ensemble cast, the story centers on a group of high school students in Orange County, California who explore their sexuality in a modern world. This tests their deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.”
If you’re in the mood for: A female-led supernatural thrill ride filled with magic, whimsy, action, and steampunk vibes that will leave you guessing at every turn:
The Nevers
This show!!! It’s so good. The perfect show for fall, if you can hold off watching it until then. Laura Donnelly as Amalia True is one of the greatest female characters ever written for the screen. She’s complex, daring, brave, vulnerable, intimidating, and will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, all while running and trying to hide from her own dark and twisted past. The series is set in 1800’s London, so the feel of it is spooky, mysterious, and haunting. If you’re a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you’ll love this show (both were created by Joss Whedon). It’s action-packed and filled with the most amazing set design. There’s a big mystery to uncover at the end, which is always the best kind of TV, isn’t it?
Wikipedia summary: “An epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorians who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world."
Plus, two shows we want to start watching: Starstruck and I May Destroy You.
What about you? What have you been into lately? Any recommendations for what we should watch next?

Outlander’s Most In-Demand Trading Cards
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Presented by:
Outlander fans want an immersive experience in the world of the show. However, in the midst of both Droughtlander and a global pandemic, fans of the time-traveling historical romance have fewer options than ever to engage with this rich world. Some fans are satisfied with collecting clothing items or themed gifts, but Cryptozoic’s trading card collections take Outlander fandom to the next level by giving fans the opportunity to collect pieces of screen-used costumes and cast autographs.
Which cards should you go for? Well, that depends on your particular interests in the fandom, but demand and availability might also come into play—especially if you have a budget. Generally, the most active eBay auctions currently are for unopened Season 4 and earlier trading card sets. Wardrobe and autograph cards are mixed in at random, and sealed boxes guarantee no cards were swapped out or removed. Since the pandemic has eliminated opportunities to meet the Outlander cast at conventions or press events, autograph cards are now more valuable as collectors’ items.
If you’re looking for something special, Cryptozoic is partnering with eBay on two exclusive cards: “The Fraser Family” Oversized Wardrobe Card launches on eBay at 2 p.m. PT on Nov. 30. “Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser” Oversized Wardrobe Card, which contains fabric pieces from the costume of star Caitriona Balfe from Season 4 launches on eBay at 12 p.m. PT. These limited edition cards will be among the top Outlander trading cards fans are craving to score on eBay.
If you’re new to the world of Outlander trading card auctions on eBay, it can be a bit overwhelming. We’ll walk you through what you need to know to dive into this world…
Top Wardrobe Cards
The Fraser Family Oversized Wardrobe – Cryptozoic x eBay Exclusive
One of Outlander’s most important themes is family. All of the main characters have sacrificed to keep the Fraser family together. By themselves, each wardrobe and character would be worth at least $50 but having five characters together raises the stakes considerably for collectors. Fans are naturally inclined to prefer to collect either Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) or Roger (Richard Rankin) and Bree (Sophie Skelton) themed items. This card adds Jamie’s nephew Young Ian Murray (John Bell) whose plotline in Season 4 affects both couples. There are a small handful of scenes where all five characters appear, which makes the combined photos particularly valuable.
Analyzing the costume swatches reveals additional surprises. Claire’s Season 1 green tartan dress is incredibly sentimental for fans since she wore it around Lallybroch. Jamie’s Season 4 wool frock coat was chosen to color coordinate with Claire’s. Ian’s Season 4 textured wool jacket represents his life in North Carolina. Roger and Bree’s modern clan-gathering outfits from Season 4 represent the forming of their eventual marriage. Season 1 swatches are extremely rare.
Season 4 Caitriona Balfe as Claire Fraser – Cryptozoic x eBay Exclusive
Claire costume swatches are extremely popular among Outlander collectors. This exclusive stands out because it is a swatch of her floral fichu (neck scarf) from several Season 4 episodes. Usually, swatches are made from her dresses, skirts, or jackets. The floral pattern is also similar in color pattern to another iconic Claire outfit: her brown floral brocade riding habit she wore to the Versailles gardens in Season 2, Episode 5.
Season 4 Quad Wardrobe Card: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, John Bell
This is another example of a Frasier family-themed wardrobe card. Claire, Jamie, and Ian are having a conversation in the picture. Claire’s yellow linen jacket and petticoat from the scene are featured, as well as the white linen shirt Ian wears. Jamie’s black woolen Rarity drove the demand for this auction. Only 25 of these cards exist and #24 sold for $1,225.

Outlander Season 4 Jamie & Claire Quad Oversized Wardrobe Card
Jamie and Claire are the heart of Season 4’s story. This card combines two frequently used promotional shots for their relationship and the matching costume swatches. Some may recognize the first photo as a still from Season 1 when their relationship was starting to grow. The second photo is from one of their excursions beyond Fraser’s Ridge in Season 4. One swatch features a piece of Jamie’s signature kilt in Fraser tartan and his wool coat. Claire’s swatches are from her Season 4 riding habit (18th Century travel suit) and from one of her petticoats. Be prepared to put in a fight with other collectors as the winning bid for #14 of 99 sold for $428.

Season 4 Jamie Quad Oversized Wardrobe Card
Jamie and Sam Heughan cards are the most popular, according to Cryptozoic. Each picture represents a season and stage in Jamie’s journey from young man to leader of a settlement in North Carolina. A swatch from Jamie’s black silk suit from the Season 2 Paris episodes stands out as the peak of his formal attire on the show thus far. The second swatch is actually from his white cravat (necktie) as opposed to a section from a jacket or shirt. The other two swatches are pieces of his famous tartan jackets worn throughout Outlander. Only 99 of these were made, and two bidders fought for one in an incredibly close competition that ended at $369.
Buy Season 4 Jamie Quad Oversized Wardrobe Card on eBay
Season 4 Claire Quad Oversized Wardrobe Card
Fans can’t get enough of Claire’s beautifully patterned costumes. Each swatch represents a sample of Claire’s journey from a time traveler out of her element to a pioneer of penicillin in the 18th century. Claire’s intricate plaid dress she wore to The Gathering in Season 1 alone is incredibly sentimental to Outlander fans. Her purple silk Brunswick (18th-century jacket with hood) from Paris’ Season 2 episodes also hold sentimental value. Her white linen shirt from Season 3 and her teal linen jacket in Season 4 represent Claire’s time in the New World. #2 of 99 sold for $324, which is likely less than it would cost a cosplayer to recreate one of the outfits pictured.

Top Autograph Cards
Outlander CZX Triple Autograph Caitriona Balfe, Richard Rankin & Sophie Skelton
Autograph collectors are always going to be tempted by chances to have more than one cast autograph at once. Over time, the value of a group of cast autographs rises. What is unusual about this card is that Sam Heughan as Jamie is excluded. Many of the other dual and trio autograph cards feature him. This exclusivity benefits fans who prefer Roger to Jamie or fans who focus on Brianna’s relationship with Claire. Some fans exclusively watch the show for Richard Rankin so they would place a high value on any items featuring the actor or Roger Mackenzie.
Buy Outlander CZX Triple Autograph Caitriona Balfe, Richard Rankin & Sophie Skelton on eBay
CZX Autograph Wardrobe Card Caitriona Balfe
Autograph and wardrobe combo cards offer collectors the best of both worlds. Claire’s photo and costume represent the very beginning of her journey as a heroine. The swatch is from the navy blue peacoat she wore in the first episode during her honeymoon with Frank. This early Season 1 sentimentality is why the latest auction for this dual card ended over $40 more than an auction for a solo Caitriona Balfe autograph card.
Buy CZX Autograph Wardrobe Card Caitriona Balfe on eBay
CZX Autograph Wardrobe Card Sam Heughan
One of Jamie’s most iconic Season 1 costumes is the hand-me-down leather coat from his father. The coat represents Jamie’s legacy and duty as laird of Lallybroch. Card #17 out of 60 sold for $260 clearly due to the sentimental value of the costume swatch.
Buy CZX Autograph Wardrobe Card Sam Heughan on eBay
Season 4 Stephen Bonnet Autograph Card
Ed Speleers played Season 4’s Big Bad Stephen Bonnet. Although most fans would shy away from villain characters, Speleers earned respect and praise across Outlander fandom for faithfully portraying Bonnets’ cruelty from the novels. In addition, fans of Speleers’ previous projects Downton Abbey and Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands followed him into the fandom. Neither show ever produced autographed merchandise which adds to the appeal of obtaining a Bonnet card. The most recent auction ended at $16, a good place for a beginner or budget-conscious collector to start.
Buy Season 4 Stephen Bonnet Autograph Card on eBay
SDCC NYCC 2019 CZX OUTLANDER Laura Donnelly Autograph Wardrobe Card Exclusive
This is a recent example of an older Cryptozoic convention exclusive attracting bidding attention. First of all, Laura Donnelly left her role as Jenny Murray, Jamie’s sister, after Season 3 to pursue other opportunities. Jenny has a small but devoted following for being a tough but loving wife and mother. Secondly, cards with both costume swatches and an actor autograph are rare. The costume swatch is from one of Jenny’s promotional photo costumes which makes for high sentimental value for fans.
Buy SDCC NYCC 2019 CZX OUTLANDER Laura Donnelly Autograph Wardrobe Card Exclusive on eBay
CZX David Berry As Lord John Grey Card
Lord John Grey evolves throughout the story of Outlander from Jamie’s jailer to one of his closest friends and allies. At the heart of his character development is the struggle of living as a closeted gay man in the 18th century. In addition, he is the legal guardian to Jamie’s son with Geneva Dunsany, William. Lord John has developed a small but devoted following from the spinoff novels and short stories and on the show. Some of Berry’s fans from the Australian period drama A Place to Call Home have also found their way into Outlander fandom.

Oh Outlander, you...disappointment.
Down the Rabbit Hole was awful. First off, Lizzie Wemyss is supposed to be a wisp of a girl who Brianna must protect. The casting of an actress larger than Brianna has me confused. They got rid of the iconic scene where Brianna meets all of the Murrays along with THE dispute over the necklace and put in some bizarre set piece at Chez Leghair. I understand Laura Donnelly was unavailable, but the scene could have been adjusted. I’m PISSED that they didn’t give Brianna more time to get to know her family and Lallybroch. Um, where were all the cousins? She gets a sense of Jamie there which builds anticipation for their meeting. She begins to immerse herself in the Fraser side and think of herself as one. And she was a bit dismissive of Ian at the end. I like Tobias, but he did not belong in this episode. AT ALL. Ever since the shit show that was the print shop episode, things have not been right. Yes, I really disliked the print shop episode. They have really lost their way. Too much time wasted on Stephen Bonnet and establishing what an awful person he is. That could have been shown in half the time. Especially if they had let the first episode play out as it should have instead of trying to make a political statement with that horrendous ending. The show is collapsing under the weight of the writers’ perceived “cleverness.”

Television is in the middle of a trend of remakes and adaptations which has inundated television screens with an array of iconic characters with storied histories. That puts a lot of extra weight on the performers tasked to portray these characters. Unlike a show with no prior iterations, the audience is tuning in with preconceived notions of what they expect to see. The performers are scrutinized a little harder than they would be if they were playing an original character. If a show is based on a book the diehard fans will deep dive into the character description and compare their idealized version of the character to the performer tasked with the part. Many simply can’t hold up to fan expectations. Though, those that can overcome all the odds stacked against them can go on to become as iconic as the character they are portraying. In some rare cases, they can even transcend their character and gain a level of popularity that even their iconic character has yet to achieve. That is the case with Outlander’s Sam Heughan who plays Jamie Fraser.
Tumblr media
From the moment the television adaptation of Outlander was announced there was massive speculation as to who should portray the male lead. Every well-known actor had his name tossed around the internet at some point for someone who could take on the larger than life Jamie Fraser. Then Sam Heughan was cast and immediately the scrutiny began. As with any major casting, there were naysayers, but he quickly silenced all negative chatter the moment he first graced the screen. He proved throughout those first moments that he was the right man for the job. For the past two seasons, he has far and away exceeded all expectations. He has taken what fans expected and launched the character to a whole new level that longtime fans of the book franchise didn’t even know was possible. He took an iconic character and made him even more iconic, and in the process became a household name. His talent more than warrants all the accolades and attention. It’s for these reasons, and so many more, that it was no surprise that he was named SpoilerTV’s Most Outstanding Actor of September.
Tumblr media
The work he did throughout the first part of Season Three has been exceptional starting with the haunting first episode of the season, The Battle Joined (3x1). The season opened with Jamie on his back and gravely injured leaving Heughan not much more to do than lie there except for the flashbacks to the battle. Though, those scenes were significant and included the pivotal moments like when Jamie saw Black Jack which resulted in the men charging one another. Still, most of the hour was spent with Jamie incapacitated by his injuries. Given how overpowering his tall and broad form is when he is standing it was visually alarming to see the character seem so small. While that may have been the initial visual impression, it was far from what was really going on. The moment Heughan opened his eyes it was on and there was nothing small or weak about his performance. Jamie may have been beaten down, but he was far from quitting. Though, the irony is, that he wanted to quit and give in. Jamie would have rather succumbed to his injuries than go on without Claire (Caitriona Balfe), but there was still an ember of life in his eyes throughout the hour.
Tumblr media
Heughan had to walk a very fine line between showing Jamie wanting to quit and showing the life still left in him. Jamie was down and even though he felt it was the end, there was something inside of him that was still clinging to life. Despite the physical pain from his injuries and his emotional anguish over losing Claire to the stones, he was still fighting. It isn’t in the Fraser blood to quit and even though Jamie thought that’s what he wanted he still had a lot more to do with his life. With that said, one of the most poignant scenes of the episode was when Jamie was begging with Lord Hal Melton to shoot him. For most of the episode Jamie was fighting to cling to life, but by this point, he was prepared to accept his fate in order to move onto what comes next, he was ready to reunite with his lost friends and family in the next life. If he couldn’t have Claire he would at least have them and he was desperate for that sort of familial connection. To him, by this point, he had justified it as not quitting, but moving onto the next stage of existence.
Tumblr media
When Lord Melton wouldn’t give that to him he grew frustrated. It was sort of ironic that Melton refusing to kill him is what rejuvenated his red-hot Fraser temper. He was in dire straits and extreme pain, but still defiant with Melton. He didn’t want to accept Melton’s gift of life, because to him at that point it was a graver punishment than shooting him. The Fraser spark in him was prepared to fight to his final breath, but the broken-hearted man encasing that heart was done with the trials and tribulations that had befallen him in the wake of having to send his true love away.
Tumblr media
Now, take just a moment, and think about all these emotions. Think about the energy it takes to endure a rollercoaster ride of emotions like this. Then factor in the fact that a typical episode takes seven to ten days to film with twelve to eighteen hour work days. Sam Heughan has to maintain this level of intensity throughout the entire shoot because Jamie’s condition opened the episode and closed it. He got reprieves between shooting scenes, but when he was on camera he had to keep this up for that long of a period of time. That is a feat of epic proportions, but then it’s also prudent to factor in the fact that his performance never once suffered from the duration he had to sustain such intensity. In fact, his performances were amplified because all he had to rely on was his facial expressions and moderate movement from the rest of his body. Jamie was in intense pain, so he was limited in his movement yet he was still as present as ever. His performance was slightly subdued due to the circumstances, but all that did was further display his talent. This entire episode was a tour de force for him, but not in a physical way. This was all about pure up-close personal acting that impacts the audience and he certainly achieved that.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, this season is tasked to cover a huge swath of time which allowed Jamie to be in peak health by the time the next episode rolled around.Surrender (3x2) was a very different episode for Heughan who once again faced a whole new set of challenges in portraying Jamie’s journey without Claire. This episode gave him far fewer lines than usual yet he dominated the hour with his big booming charisma. The scenes where Jamie said nothing were some of Heughan’s most defining moments in this episode. He was asked, once again, to emote in a different way than performers are used to. In the absence of words, focus was put onto his every movement and action. Most importantly, without words, he still managed to convey so much. In fact, one might say that words would have ruined those scenes. It’s ironic, when he was on the ground near death in the prior episode there was more hope and life in his eyes than when he was able-bodied and back at his home in this one. Jamie had accepted his demise then was spared and that broke him to a degree. But, by being back at Lallybroch, he had responsibilities. What Heughan managed to portray is a shell of a man just going through the motions. Jenny (Laura Donnelly) hit it spot on when she said that her brother didn’t really make it back from Culloden. What is so stunning about Heughan’s acting is that before those words were even spoken the audience already knew that Jenny was right. The Jamie that fans know and adore was barely there and that’s exactly what Heughan intended.
Tumblr media
These scenes of shell-Jamie were important for the way the rest of the hour played out. Seeing him protect Jenny’s wee newborn baby Ian and try to silence the lad were the first signs of the Jamie everyone knows starting to make his return. More signs became obvious later, when he saved Fergus (Romann Berrux), after the foolish yet well-meaning young man egged on the Red Coats and subsequently lost his hand. Seeing young Fergus risk so much to protect Lallybroch and its inhabitants reminded Jamie of what his true responsibilities are. The moment he shared with Fergus while the young man was recovering was eye-opening for Jamie. It was a powerful transformational moment for a man lost in the darkness of heartache. Heughan stunningly transitioned between all these extremes showing Jamie’s full journey. Every aspect of the hour worked so well because Heughan fully embraced the journey. At the exact right moments, he let some light slip into his eyes and typical Jamie strength back into his actions.
Tumblr media
Then, there was the scene with Mary MacNab (Emma Campbell-Jones) where Jenny tried to entice her brother with a lady to mend his heart. Perhaps she had hoped it’d keep him around, but she should have known that a romantic romp would never ever mend his heart after the loss of Claire. It was still a terrific scene for Heughan as it was in this moment that the Jamie fans know and adore kicked back into gear as a powerfully emotional tear trickled down his cheek. In that moment Heughan showed Jamie finally feeling everything he’d been trying to hold back. Mary couldn’t replace Claire, but for a brief moment in time, she helped remind him how to feel. In that way, Jenny’s plan worked, but Jamie Fraser is a man of honor and nothing was going to keep him from fulfilling the obligations he felt towards accepting his punishment and protecting his family.
Tumblr media
Even though he was starting to come back into his own by the end of the hour he was still struggling to cope with life without Claire. When he was being carted off, as he stared up at the sky, there was this calm expression of acceptance on his face. He was finally being punished, something he seems to have felt he deserved after surviving when so many of his friends and clansmen had fallen with honor at Culloden. In the process, he even managed to protect his sister and her family. It wasn’t ideal, but to him, it was a satisfactory ending and was the right thing to do to honor his duties to everyone that did and do count on him. And all of that was on Sam Heughan’s face throughout the sequence. He’s a powerhouse actor and can pull off big grand moments with expert precision, but he’s just as masterful with these quieter moments of reflection.
Tumblr media
The following episode, All Debts Paid (3x3), finally showed that Jamie had come back into his own. Being around his men and taking on a leadership role rejuvenated him. Even though he was in prison and shackled he seemed to be more alive than in the prior two episodes combined. There was a sadness to him, but that spark of life that was just barely flickering in the first episode and that only started to regain steam in the second was burning brightly in this hour. Jamie Fraser was back as a leader and even without Claire, he was surviving. This episode introduced him to the grown-up Lord John Grey (David Berry) and through him, Jamie really sprung back and a friendship was forged in the most unlikely or circumstances. Whether it was them dining together having an intelligent conversation, challenging each other to games of chess, or simply Jamie standing up to him in defense of the rights of his men, their every encounter was dynamic.
Tumblr media
It has been said before, and it must be said again, Heughan has remarkable chemistry with every performer he is paired with. The very nature of the story isolated Sam Heughan from his regular scene partner, Caitriona Balfe. Their chemistry is spectacular and what they can do together on the screen is nothing sort of magical. That fact made it a bit sad, coming into the season because that magic would be separated for an extended period of time. But, the pro he is, Heughan charged into the season forging new connections and developing stunning new bonds. As always, his sibling bond with Donnelly is spot-on. The love and banter they perfectly portray are what all siblings encounter, love for each other and a biologically ingrained need to protect one another, but also typical sibling disagreements. These two performers perfectly nail everything that their characters endure. But, perhaps, the most poignant relationship of the early part of this season was forged between Jaime and Lord Grey. In fact, Lord Grey was one of the few people he spoke to about Claire. The prospect of finding her even led Jamie to stage an escape before being bound again. Despite what he thought he knew to be the truth, in that Claire left, the prospect of perhaps finding his lost love still in his time was enough for him to risk his honor to see out his sentence. Ultimately, their friendship allowed Lord Grey to not only understand why Jamie did what he did but to ensure a comfortable servitude for him after the prison was shuttered. It was the connection the performers forged that made these scenes seem so believable and impactful to the overall story.
Tumblr media
With David Berry being new to the cast, his dynamic with Heughan could have gone badly. These two men charged into the complicated friendship between Jamie and John putting into place the early makings of a very long powerful friendship. Simply put, Heughan knows that truth comes across on the screen. He cares about his co-stars and it comes across in their performances. They all just click and while the other guest and recurring performers are all exceptional in their own right a lot of the weight of the connection rests with Heughan. As one of the series leads the show either thrives or falters on his and Balfe’s shoulders, they each carry a heavy burden and it’s usually one they can shoulder together. By being split apart they were left to carry heavier weights on their own. For anyone who wants to know what makes a perfect onscreen romantic duo, all they need to do is look at these two. Even separate they felt connected. Heughan did proud by his part of the episodes and was stunningly powerful and delivered emotionally profound performances.
Tumblr media
Sam Heughan delivered some of his very best performances in September. They were emotional and powerful while also showing vulnerability and humility, in episodes that were chalked full of noteworthy and memorable moments. There was no way that even a fraction of his stunning performances could be covered in a single article, his work was simply too impactful. That is why he is September’s Most Outstanding Actor because he does so much and always delivers high-quality work. He has exceptional depth to his performance and is beyond deserving of this title. Since this article couldn’t cover every mind-blowing scene please feel free to highlight some of the outstanding moments that were your favorites. One thing is without debate, Sam Heughan is one of a kind with a heart of gold and talent beyond comparison.

At the end of Season 2, Outlander gave us two key scenes revolving around its iconic magical stones. In one of series’ most heartbreaking moments, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) sent his wife and true partner Claire Randall Fraser (Caitiona Balfe), back to the 1940s from 18th century Scotland to give birth to their daughter, knowing historically that he would die in the massacre that was the Battle of Culloden. But, we also saw a flash-forward to twenty years later, when Claire discovers that Jamie didn’t die at Culloden, and where she and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) then witnessed another time traveller disappear to the past, overcoming her daughter’s natural skepticism of the truth of her mother’s experiences.
All of this sets up Claire’s return to Jamie in Season 3, but the series doesn’t give that to us just yet. Instead, we first explore the intervening years, including the battle itself, Jamie’s many escapes from death (even a death he yearns for after losing Claire), and Claire’s life with Frank (Tobias Menzies) in Boston.
Outlander fans are used to skipping back and forth in time, but the leaps through the twenty years that Claire and Jamie are apart don’t happen in equal measure. For the most part we race through life in Boston, where Frank has taken on a position at Harvard, and he and Claire work to try and mend their marriage before finding another way forward (while staying married for the sake of Brianna, who Frank truly loves). These scenes are meaty and dramatic and sometimes excruciating; it is the crux of what makes an emotional series like Outlander so good. But there are many other things about the Boston experience — the story is overly heavy-handed with misogyny, American accents are stagey, and dialogue can be stilted and awkward — that are not as successful.
The truth is that Outlander is at its best, so far, when the story is in Scotland. There’s more energy and emotional intensity, the storytelling tends to be shaper, and there’s more humor and personality to the vignettes. Jamie faces innumerable difficulties and and unending line of foes and strange circumstances following Culloden, but it takes on the tone of an adventure tale. He is a brave warrior who has lost his true love, and who only wants to do what is right while seeking a heroic death to put him out of his misery. Thankfully for us he doesn’t find it, and slowly begins to embrace life again. So when the show jumps from that to a cocktail party in 1960s Boston, or Claire’s hop-skip-jump to becoming a highly regarded surgeon, it’s often jarring and not particularly satisfying. (However, 1960s Scotland remains extremely cozy, as does an American Christmas shared with Richard Rankin’s Roger).
Despite some of its shakier narrative or dialogue-driven moments, what always rings true with Outlander are its dramatic scenes and their inherent stakes thanks to the fearlessness of its actors. When Jamie makes a decision to protect his sister and her family, or when he has a quiet word with Fergus, or when Claire tells Brianna how much joy she has always brought to her life, this is when Outlander shines. Those moments are further augmented by a show that continues to be one of the most immersive and atmospheric on television. Setting is essential to the series, but it’s more than that — it’s the detailing of the costumes, the score, the consideration of every look and style from each era, and the very clear amount of care and detail given to every visual aspect of the show.
Outlander’s third season is a reunion of several kinds — for fans of the books, it will be a journey of catching the foreshadowing and the changes that keep the adaptation exciting, while for all fans it is a joy to see old friends again like Rupert (Grant O’Rourke), Ian (Steven Cree), Jenny (Laura Donnelly), Fergus (Romann Berrux), Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), and settings like Lallybroch and the Scottish moors. Yet most of all, it’s an anticipation of seeing Jamie and Claire reunited after two decades apart, after leading such different lives, and seeing if they can be connected again like they once were. Once they are together, nothing else matters. Here, the show finally slows down and records every single moment shared between them as they rediscover one another lovingly, awkwardly, and most of all truthfully.
Outlander has often been overlooked of dismissed for being a “romance,” even though it is full of adventure and political intrigue and historical insight. The show isn’t perfect; there are some issues with pace and continuity and the writing that keep it from crossing a threshold to top-tier television. But what cannot and should not be ignored is how pure its story is when it it comes to the nature of love and relationships. It doesn’t just portray the fantasy, but also the realities of the era, of growing and changing (together and apart), of loss and mourning, and of a faith in a connection so deep that time and space become irrelevant. When Outlander is at its best, there is not a more beautiful show on television. It feels like home.
Rating: ★★★★ Very good — Sing me a song of a lass that is gone …
Outlander Season 3 premieres Sunday, September 10th on Starz.
