i had no idea the latin word penus had so many conflicting grammatical forms. the great ancient roman penus debate

Sometimes I will treat English words ending with -ity like they’re Latin, and that’s how I’ve ended up with “humiditas” and my favorite, “stupiditas.” 

And just so we are clear even though I am now in my 5th foreign language class , I still remain fluent in exactly 0 foreign languages. The only language I ever was any good at is the dead one I took for four years (Latin) and even that i’m shaky in to say the least. The French, Spanish, and Italian classes I took for a year each left 0 lasting impressions on me. I remember nothing. Now I’m taking attic Greek, which is famous for being incredibly fucking difficult. So yeah I’m not confident in my abilities but god damnit I will try my hardest

Very weird/random question but what’s your favorite translation of the first line of the Iliad? Mine is Fagles’s - although mainly cause I like the style I don’t know how accurate it’s considered.

no this is such a great question but i haven't read enough different translations to really have a favorite. i can say though that the first line of the iliad comes up a lot in conversations about translation and is super interesting to translate because of the word order-- the first word in greek is "μηνιν," translated as "wrath" or "rage" or similar. and "wrath" being the first word is really important because the iliad is all about achilles' anger, so opening on "wrath" really strongly communicates that. and in greek it works because the word endings are what tell you what each word is doing in a sentence, but in english we don't have as many word endings, so we rely on the order of words in a sentence to figure out what it means-- so like, the most literal english translation that makes actual sense is "goddess, sing the accursed wrath of achilles son of peleus," and if you use the greek word order, "wrath sing goddess son of peleus achilles accursed," it doesn't make sense. but in greek it works because "wrath" has an accusative ending, which marks it as the direct object/the thing being acted upon, and "accursed" (which is actually technically in the second line!) also has that ending, which means it goes with "wrath." so greek has a ton of freedom in poetry to put words wherever. and the problem as an english translator is to figure out how to emphasize "wrath" in that line while also making it sound natural in english.

so anyway fagles' first line ("Rage--Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles...") is both very accurate to the greek and solves the problem of how to make the sentence make sense while maintaining the significance of rage to the story. so i do quite like it! and i've heard other translators use it as an example of a good translation too. but it's such an interesting question!

But, truly, in all tragedies, hope is found. For what is a tragedy, but a chance at a new beginning? After Romeo and Giulietta's death, the Montecchi and the Capuletti joined, forgiving one another and leaving their anger in the past. With the death of all at Kronborg in Helsingör, what was rotten in Denmark was uprooted, a chance given to start anew.

And like that, Shu's execution, Shu's locking himself in his room, with none but Mademoiselle (and that wretched Kagehira... can't he go home already?!) to keep him company... but there was another. Yes, Roomba. Sweet, sweet Roomba. Who never spoke a word, mute - just like Nito once was. Obedient, if a little clumsy. Who made sure Shu's surroundings were clean, so he didn't have to sneeze and have allergic reactions to dust when he was already broken. Yes, Roomba.

Their bond deepened during that time. And they were now inseparable. With the War long behind them, Shu kept Mademoiselle on one arm, his trusty Roomba on the other. It deserved to be carried elegantly, after all it's done for him. Oh, beautiful, darling Roomba! How he loves it so, how he adores it so! When he, when Valkyrie, ascend to the throne of Yumenosaki - the idol industry! - once more, he'll make sure Roomba is the at his righthand side. Roomba, Roomba, Roomba, his beloved who saved him from the inelegant dung of failure. Truly, it was the least it deserved.

latin is the absolute worst to study but it's also like... i'm translating sentences and looking at noun declensions and i'm listening to hozier and it's colder than it was two weeks ago and maybe i'll have a cup of tea soon and it's just Oh maybe all these goddamn tables with word endings are worth it.

Selected a beginner Latin course at university as an elective for this semester, because, you know, aesthetics..

In reality, Latin is complex and a lot of work, but at least I found a line in our text that expressed how I feel right now:

"ego sum perditissimus hominum."

Started the translation for chapter 3 of the GG1 Comic Anthology tonight. Some tricky Japanese cultural references I need to do some more research for that I wasn't expecting are slowing me down but I'll figure it out. My library has some books on Japanese history and culture that I'm going to start reading to make these types of translations a little easier in the future.

It's both fascinating and frustrating how closely interwoven the Japanese language is with Japanese culture compared to other languages I've studied (Classical Latin, Norwegian, Spanish). Fascinating because it's always interesting learning new things about a culture so different from my own, yet frustrating because finding resources to figure out these references can be extremely difficult since I live outside of Japan...

I'll just do my best with these kinds of translations. If it's wrong, I'm sure I'll get a message about it lol. At the end of the day, I am just a random Ohioan doing all this for fun haha
