Call Ampersand Response⁣ Michael Dumontier & Micah Lexier⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com⁣ ⁣ Between 2011 and 2017 Canadian artists Michael Dumontier (born 1960) and Micah Lexier (born 1974) conceived this activity as a way to share with each other their mutual interest in found images, line drawings and used books.⁣ ⁣ The starting image was a circle on a rectangle; every subsequent image was visually connected to the previous one. It was understood from the outset that they had to use images that could be scanned from physical items they already had at home (no images from the internet), such as children's books, technical manuals, and assorted ephemera.⁣ ⁣ The call-and-response nature of the enterprise can be appreciated in the pairs of facing pages that present themselves as you go through the book.⁣ ⁣ #LarsMüller #CallAmpersandResponse #MichaelDumontier #MicahLexier #Design #foundimages⁣ ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B7JA63Zn9x3/?igshid=k29wyamd5y8

NEW from @larsmullerpublishers !! 'Mãe Luíza: Building Optimism' — on the transformation of a favela—an urban success story on the Brazilian coast. Mãe Luíza was founded as an illegal settlement in 1958 during Brazil’s period of rural exodus. In 1971, the favela's first water reservoir was installed. In 2014, the Arena do Morro was inaugurated: a sports and social centre designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron that seats 420 people, can hold sport games, concerts and events, and features multipurpose rooms for classes, changing areas and a terrace overlooking the ocean. 'Mãe Luíza. Building Optimism' tells the story of this amazing development from a variety of viewpoints. The documentation impressively demonstrates how transformation was achieved step by step with the help of many, laying the groundwork for ongoing progress. With an essay by Paulo Lins and images by @iwanbaan Edited with text by Ion de Andrade, Tomislav Dushanov, Nicole Miescher, Lars Müller. Text by Loyse de Andrade, Dulce Bentes, Mô Bleeker, Nicholas Fox Weber, Herzog & de Meuron, Erminia Maricato, Verner Monteiro, Raymund Ryan, Andrea Scartazzini, Robério Camilo da Silva, Paulo Lins. Read more via linkinbio. #MaeLuizaBuildingOptimism #MaeLuizaOptimismuswagen #MaeLuiza #Ameropafondation #NGO #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #nicolemiescher #iondeandrade #tomislavdushanov #larsmüller #paulolins #brazil #photography #socialwork #iwanbaan #larsmullerpublishers https://www.instagram.com/p/CZzYgyvFpiN/?utm_medium=tumblr

LAST COPY! True Print / Available at www.draw-down.com / Dafi Kühne is a Swiss #designer who works with analog and digital ways to produce fresh and unique #letterpress printed #posters. Using very different kinds of instruments for his compositions—from a MacBook to a pantograph—he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of the letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary on how to communicate through #type and form in a truly un-nostalgic way. Never retro, his work is a clever response to the search for new ways of graphic expression: true print. This is Kühne's first monograph. Handbook of Tyranny / Available at www.draw-down.com / Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the 21st century through a series of detailed non-fiction graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence—they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions the current world of #walls and #fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirrors the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe. The 21st century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and its stealth #design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. By bluntly showing the designs, Handbook of #Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between #politicalpower, territoriality and systematic cruelties. Design in Question / Available at www.draw-down.com / In 2009, Ruedi Baur, Design2context, and the renowned Elisava School of Design in Barcelona launched a call for “Questions on Design” in order to create a typographical wall in the entrance area of Elisava. About a hundred persons from all over the world, #designers as well as #students, took part in the exercise. As of today, more than 700 questions have been gathered and put onto the wall. Among them, Vera Kockot and Ruedi Baur have selected the wittiest questions for this publication. They scrutinize different facets of design which are currently relevant in diverse fields, such as the natural sciences and society as a whole. A text explains the idea and the realization of the project. A tiny book that can be easily carried, this volume is a portable treasure that is easy to access and appreciate. The collected questions can be pondered alone, or used as prompts for spontaneous conversations. Though produced in 2012, many of the queries remain relevant to today's design community, and to related fields. Designed by Integral #RuediBauer. Apple: Learning Philosophical Learning / Available at www.draw-down.com / Japanese graphic designer #KenMiki playfully presents a complete basic course in visual communication—all based on a simple and familiar object: the apple. First, all five senses are activated in a step-by-step analysis of the apple by touching, looking at, smelling, tasting and listening to the sound of eating it. The apple is then used to illustrate the topics of #form, #color, size, surface, texture, writing, line, body and text—the fundamental elements a designer works with. Addressing each theme based on this everyday object enables a playful approach that also makes for highly effective learning. A unique textbook that offers inspiration and food for thought for both experienced graphic artists and those less familiar with the world of design. Editing and design by Ken Miki, Masahiko Setoyama, Yoko Inuyama, and Akira Ono. Published by #LarsMüller Publishers
