Picked this up at the @fotografiska.newyork last spring during their #moholynagy exhibition. @larsmullerpublishers has reproduced the 1925 #designs but with English translations of the #bauhausbucher series of books. They were initiated by Moholy-Nagy & #waltergropius to promote the #newdesign philosophies coming out of the #bauhaus . While the #book is called #painting #photography #film , it’s very apparent in the essays & the visual content that László was much more interested in the latter two. In re-reading and re-evaluating Marcel Breuer the architect I realized that this book was still missing in my library: „Marcel Breuer: Building Global Institutions“, edited by Barry Bergdoll & Jonathan Massey and published in 2018 by Lars Müller Publishers. The book collects eight essays that examine Breuer and his relation to institutional clients, often powerful institutions like the UN or IBM but also universities and religious communities, how their desire for self-representation changed the architect’s modus operandi and vice versa. Based on exemplary buildings the authors discuss e.g. the development Breuer’s „heavy lightness“ (Bergdoll) or how his UNESCO assignment facilitated the development of the characteristic shadowplay on the facades of Breuer’s brutalist architecture. „Marcel Breuer_ Building Global Institutions“ represents a very interesting approach (that also draws heavily on the Syracuse University’s Breuer Digital Archive) to Breuer’s architectural work and is a great sign of renewed interest in Breuer research that I can only highly welcome.

Most of us will know him for his geometric mode of painting with pictures that consist of right angles and the three primary colors – compositions, as he himself called them. What is less known is that Mondrian also had a connection to the Bauhaus: Having participated in the Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung (Great Berlin Art Exhibition) in 1923 and having visited the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar, Mondrian established a friendly dialogue with the Bauhaus printing workshop. Consequently, his ideas on Neo-Plasticism were incorporated as volume 5 in the Bauhausbücher series. The Dutchman Piet Mondrian was thus the first author in the series who was not German and did not teach at the Bauhaus. „Neue Gestaltung“ (New Design) is now available in the original layout and in English translation.
