27th Brno Biennial Catalogue⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com ⁣ ⁣ Designed by #TomasCelizna #AdamMacháček and #RadimPeško / The 344 page catalogue for the 27th Brno Biennial examines the key phenomena of contemporary graphic design and visual communication. Is it possible to describe new things with old words? This edition responds to the metamorphoses and the state of contemporary graphic design: its multitude, variety, vagueness and apparent superficiality. Its ambition is to elucidate—both on the general and subjective levels—the phenomena which define or influence contemporary visual culture. The Brno Biennial was established in 1963, and is considered the oldest exhibition of graphic design in the world. The catalogue presents texts by Åbäke, David Bennewith, Rachel Berger, Emilia Bergmark, Andrew Blauvelt, Sulki & Min Choi, Jean-Marie Courant, Linda Dostálková, #ExperimentalJetset Kurt Finsten, Chris Fitzpatrick, Roland Früh, Paul Gangloff, Tetsuya Goto, Catherine Ince, Emily King, James Langdon, #SheilaLevrantdeBretteville Hélène Meisel & officeabc, #DanMichaelson #JonSueda #MartaSylvestrová Frantisek Štorm, #LindavanDeursen and the curators and authors of the exhibitions spotlighted during the Biennial. Includes an interview with Czech designer Jiří Hadlač, co-founder of the Brno Biennial; photographic documentation and description of the winning entries in the graphic design competition; plus book selections and commentaries by a host of international graphic designers. FINALLY BACK IN STOCK! OASE #100: The Architecture of the Journal / Available at www.draw-down.com / The 100th issue of OASE takes the journal’s long-standing collaboration with its graphic designer #KarelMartens as a starting point to explore the relationship between #architecture journals and #graphicdesign. In doing so, it challenges the conventional idea that architecture journals are mere carriers of information, showing instead how these journals play a defining role in the message they convey. Adhering to Marshall McLuhan’s famous maxim ‘the medium is the message’, it considers the graphic space of the journal, its materiality, its production, and the physical experience of reading. The landmark issue zooms in on the relationship between architecture journals and graphic design, starting with a historical overview before considering the specific history of #OASE and the practice of its own graphic designer. The aim is to provide an insight into the close and mutually enriching relationship between the graphic design of an architecture journal and the production of architectural knowledge. Includes the articles “Magazine Architecture”; “Karel Martens and the Architecture of the Journal”; "Harvest of Oasis: Merits and Dilemmas of the Grid” by #LindavanDeursen; and “Imageless Architecture Building Metaphors for a Typographic Grid” as well as a transcribed converation between Karel Martens and the issue's editors. https://www.instagram.com/p/BuqyIJUn3KL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5pcwwcn5eni

Statement And Counter-Statement by Experimental Jetset / Available at www.draw-down.com / The first publication on the work of Dutch power trio Experimental Jetset features almost two decades of graphic design praxis. Rather than a monolithic monograph, this book presents a loose, personal archive, with essays by Linda van Deursen, Mark Owens, and Ian Svenonius, plus two photographic chapters with a selection of work by the studio, covering both printed matter and the documentation of site-specific pieces and installations. A glossary-like anthology of texts (fragments of interviews, lectures, correspondence, etc.) previously written by Experimental Jetset—selected, edited, and structured by Jon Sueda—concludes the volume. Experimental Jetset is a small, independent, Amsterdam-based graphic design studio, founded in 1997 by (and still consisting of) Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers and Danny van den Dungen. Designed by Experimental Jetset #graphicdesign #typography #ExperimentalJetset #LindavanDeursen #MarkOwens #IanSvenonius #JonSueda #Amsterdam
