this one !!! is from an idea ,, where the abyss finds ol’ nameless bard, yoinks them, and sends them on their merry now corrupted way. this is where they find (well, lures would be more accurate…) venti and lumine and fight them. for a majority of the fight, venti ,,, keeps finding himself holding back. he does everything to make sure nothing truly hurts.

why do people still spread around that yellow is a gl’s weakness if it hasn’t been for like… a while according to some gl fans

Is there a comic that i missed? is it just a weakness that hasn’t been remembered in a while?

Tldr: The yellow weakness has not existed since the establishment of Kyle Rayner as the singular Green Lantern back in 1994.

A brief history of the Green Lantern ring’s yellow weakness

The yellow weakness was introduced in the same issue as Hal: Showcase #22. According to Abin Sur, the former Green Lantern of sector 2814, “once you have the battery you will have power over everything–except what is yellow!” From this point onward, Green Lantern comics would not let you forget this fact with almost every issue saying some variation of “Editor’s note: due to a necessary impurity, Green Lantern’s ring is powerless over anything yellow!” This explanation is similar to one presented in Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn (1990), the post-crisis rewrite of Hal Jordan’s origin with one major change, discussed below.

While Green Lanterns cannot directly affect anything made of yellow (or surrounded by “an invisible yellow aura” such as the Shark), their constructs can indirectly affect yellow objects. For example, Hal would not be able to make a baseball bat to bat away a yellow cloud, but he would be able to make a fan to blow away the yellow cloud. In addition, because yellow is based on how it appears, various tricks are used to make yellow into green.

The yellow weakness is treated as a necessary and essential aspect of Green Lantern lore, and thus not questioned, until the psychodrama arc in Green Lantern (1960) #166 - 170. At this point in the timeline, Hal is well into his “space exile” arc, i.e. the time that the Guardians forbid him from returning to Earth for a year after he put his home life above his responsibilities as Green Lantern. The psychodrama was a way of testing Hal’s loyalty after Myrwhydden, a wizard trapped in Hal’s power ring, put him in a trance like state (Green Lantern (1960) #164). In this “psychodrama”, a rookie Green Lantern dies because her ring is unable to work against yellow. This, in addition to Green Lanterns learning that the Guardians had rings that could work against yellow and was withholding them for an unknown reason, caused several Green Lanterns to rebel against the Guardians. Hal is immediately against these rebel Green Lanterns -showing his utter devotion to the Guardians at this point. Eventually, the rings without a yellow weakness are revealed to make their users evil, and Hal proves his devotion to the Guardians, allowing him to exit the psychodrama. While the exact details are not necessary in this discussion, this is the first time that the yellow weakness is treated as not something completely necessary and more like a conscious choice on the side of the Guardians.

The yellow weakness especially became important at the end of Englehart’s Green Lantern Corps run (Green Lantern (1960) #201-224). At this point, the Green Lanterns agreed to execute Sinestro for genocide, but as they executed him, we learn that a billion years before the Guardians had made a pact that no Guardian or agent of the Guardians (aka the Green Lantern Corps) could murder a male Korugarian without the yellow impurity taking control of the Central Power Battery, causing the destruction of the Green Lantern rings, Oa, and eventually, the Universe itself. When the Green Lanterns execute Sinestro, the Green Lantern power battery almost becomes a black hole that would suck in the whole universe as the yellow impurity takes it over, but Hal Jordan enters the power battery and stops it from exploding.

Now, as I said earlier, in the mid 80s, there began to be question about the true essential nature of the yellow impurity, and this question became full on disbelief in the late 80s/early 90s. In Secret Origins (1986) #36, Hal says, “My ring has a built-in impurity—it won’t function on anything made of yellow! I suppose it’s a safeguard against any one Green Lantern becoming too powerful!” Hal very explicitly believes the yellow weakness was added to stop Green Lanterns from becoming too powerful and this is backed up by the events within the psychodrama and the flashback scenes in Green Lantern (1990) #19. In this issue, we see a flashback to a former Green Lantern of Sector 2814, a Green Lantern with no weakness at all-not to yellow like the corps, not to wood like Alan- who eventually went power-hungry. At this point, we see the wood weakness added to his ring, as the Guardians had already removed the yellow weakness as he was the Greatest Green Lantern of that time. 

In the end of 1993/beginning of 1994, Emerald Twilight was published. This story made Hal a living conduit of the ring energy and established Kyle Rayner as the last Green Lantern. The idea that the Guardians added the yellow weakness is the implicit subtext within Kyle Rayner’s run. From issue 51 onward, we see Kyle’s ring is different from the former Green Lantern rings; it has no 24 hour limit, it does not automatically protect the user, and most importantly for this discussion, it does not have a weakness to yellow.

There are a few different theories for why, in universe, this change happened. The most well-support theories are that

A.) Ganthet removed the yellow weakness while reforming the ring, so that the new user would have a chance against Hal.

B.) The Parallax entity leaving the central power battery, and taking root within Hal, caused the necessary impurity to no longer be necessary.

However, the actual reason for the change in universe does not change the fact that the yellow weakness was not necessary, it was imputed as a form of control, and it caused people to die. The yellow weakness has not existed since 1994, outside of flashbacks, but it is still an interesting aspect of Green Lantern history when not reduced to banana jokes.

The reason people still bring it up is because no one reads Green Lantern comics but Green Lantern fans.

It has been (checks) more than a decade since I've seen that film, but I remember it being an actually OK superhero movie, back when superhero movies were still allowed to be silly and OK.

I do not know how they looked at Taika and went "he'll be Ryan Reynolds' nerdy best friend," tho.

Anyway, all the in-game dialogue suggests they're more rodent like than the name suggests. I mean 5P literally calls you a rodent or a wet mouse several times. So, I went at the skeletal anatomy of a slug cat from the perspective of a very weird hairless rat with front-facing eyes and a very stubby face.

I did leave an ask for @stealingyourbones about this once, but basically, that ask was about how- what if Danny was a Blue Lantern? Not Phantom, but Danny. So now he has two secret identities and he can't let anyone know about either of them. Which creates fun little shenanigans when they want to meet with Phantom, but the trusty Blue Lantern needs to be present as well. >:3

OKAY OKAY….. i am going to do their relationships because that’s what i have been brainrotting over today lol (also nb goes by they/them in this au ahsjsksksk)

so so so, to start with, how did nb (named cecil in this au lol) become an archon?

quite simple! venti overexerted itself during the fight against decarabian. when good ol deccy finally perished and the tower exploded, venti used all its energy to make a shield to protect its friends! so everyone lives!!!

unfortunately though this has very very bad consequences and cecil has to watch their little friend begin to fade. but before they finally pass, they transfer their energy to cecil, wanting to be with them rather then rejoin the wind.

so cecil becomes a candidate for the gnosis :). (please note i am completely bullshitting venti’s powers here. we have no idea what they could do as a wisp and i will be forever angry at that.)

celestia has…. a tense relationship with cecil. the only reason cecil took the gnosis was because “if no one else, i will” (i actually wanna make a comic about their receiving of the gnosis because wow! that’s a lot of angst!)

also cecil absolutely Despises celestia despite being a god now. they are very open about it, and that leads to celestia threatening them Quite Often. there are many times venti is almost taken from them, and once cecil almost loses the wings they have during a confrontation. (also wanna make a comic about this and will probably start one soon 👀👀).

okay okay now onto their relationships!

the red haired warrior (aka ragnvindr as we will call him XD) and cecil have… not so good a relationship. while ragnvindr understands the reason behind cecil’s decision to take the gnosis, he does not respect it. he’s terrified that the power will get to their head (when cecil is just Trying To Get Through It.)

so after making sure mond is up and running without any problems (amos and gunnhildr forced him to), he…. leaves. without saying goodbye.

gunnhildr and cecil have a. have quite the relationship. they are very very uncomfortable with the worship gunnhildr gives them and keeps their distance. she respects them a lot and would defend them like her life depends on it, and cecil is just…. not about that. they try to work it out but it does not succeed and their relationship remains “work only.” (cecil only comes to her for archon and mond stuff.) (although 👀👀 perhaps this changes at one point via amos intervention 👀👀.)

now amos!!! surprisingly, amos and cecil are very close! at first she was uncomfortable with the idea of another god, especially one that she had considered a friend or comrade beforehand. but seeing cecil is scrambling to adjust to normal life and archon life, she realizes that maybe…. this time can be different, and tries to help (in an awkward and subtle way lol.)

they become like siblings over time!!! cecil mostly comes to amos for a majority of things, and it’s rare to not see them hanging out in some way XD.

venti is still a little wisp in this au (surprise surprise! they aren’t still dead! cecil brought it back.) they become a little assistant to cecil, and even becomes the “leader” of the thousand winds (in reality cecil trusts venti the most out of the other wisps so when they ask venti to do something, the other wisps just follow their lead ansjsksk.)

after amos and gunnhildr pass, cecil goes into hiding for a while, and recedes into something of a hermit XD. the thousands winds keep them company and they all become good friends :’)).

cecil remains in hiding until venti forces him to go meet zhongli + the other archons, and the rest is history!

(also istaroth is quite interested in cecil 👀 she honestly didn’t expect they would become a god, and keeps trying to pick at their brain.

they are…. acquaintances? cecil tolerates her existence to an extent lmao.)

Hi sorry to bother. I recently finished Far Sector and I really enjoyed it. I wanted to read about other green laterns, but i find the amount of material really daunting and I dont know which character to start with. Do you have any recomendations? FroI wanted to go with Jessica, since I think the main bulk of her story is kinda self contained, but im not sure

Okay, lanterns have a lot of different stuff involved, I'm personally a huge fan of Hal (if you can't tell), but I do like all of them.

Jess, I would say probably start with gls? She's one of the ones I know less about since she was introduced after 1994, but I would say probably start with green lanterns (2016), its pretty self contained to my knowledge. She's in n52 jl, but also n52 jl :(. @emerald-lights could probably give you more recs on her.

Also if you ever want to get into Hal, here's my personal rec list! You can skip all non bolded ones but those are just some of my favorite Hal issues (and then geoff's run which effects a lot of things and every issue leads into each other so its harder to leave out issues). For John I would probably read gl 1960 89 and then skip ahead to 183 (which is when he gets his ring, you'll kinda be dropped into the arc but it'll be fine). Guy? I honestly haven't liked a lot of Guy comics, people say jli for him but the ableism there threw me off. Kyle, I would just start at his solo while reading the preceeding three hal issues (gl 1990 #48 onwards). I would start with green lanterns for Simon as well.

I miss Alhaitham... I know cannonically he doesnt really fit into many events because why would he go out of his way for some strangers but cant Kaveh or Cyno or Nahida or anyone really just drag him out? I miss my husband and his husband TwT

Charles' breath has mostly settled by the time the figure shrouded in green light--a Green Lantern, he figures, since he can't think of any other member of the public-facing Justice League who looks like this--actually reaches him.

He must look worse-off than he feels, because the Lantern before him looks worried, his hand hovering over Charles' shoulder (which definitely feels broken but is more than acceptable considering the alternative); he's so close that Charles can pick out the miniscule detail of his cosmic suit like this had been some kind of formal session back at his studio, the green mask over his eyes that curves gracefully around his head aglow with Lantern light and leaving the tuft of darkened-blond hair exposed for Charles to just stare at, struck dumb and silent in his presence. The Lantern hasn't figured this out yet, still concerned for his safety as he asks, over and over, are you okay in perfect French (funny that one of Earth's defenders happens to speak the same language as him) and Charles realizes that recognizes that voice, he does, it's just--"Charles," the Lantern insists, closing the distance to clasp a hand on his uninjured shoulder, and all of a sudden it hits him--

"Pierre?"

rogue green lantern!Jason. Someone on reddit joked about how, if Jason “overcame great fear” during Gotham War, he could get a ring. I don’t think he’d join the Corps, but he would also not renounce to such power coming at a time of such vulnerability either.

I don't have much to spoil about this one since it's gonna be a one-shot focused just on this premise and I still have to iron out a lot of the details. do I stick to the current lantern canon? what are they even doing now? do jason and kyle rayner still have some semblance of backstory? will I bother using it given how indifferent I am to their canon interactions? who knows.

I saw you said you want Razer theories/headcanons so mine is that Razer should get a Violet ring down the line like. I firmly believe the only reason he didn't is because nothing had changed the very outdated "All Star Sapphires are girls" rule, which has been done away with nowadays (even if they don't do much with male Star Sapphires, really another reason to make Razer one). When you look at his rage and his hope, they both center on his love, with violet being the meeting of red and blue anyways. I also think he could kind of rock even the skimpier Star Sapphire outfits.

I could definitely see Razer wielding a Violet Ring's power too! He's truly such a complex character; he clearly feels all his emotions very strongly and, like you said, both his anger and his hope are rooted in one shared thing: love.

It would be very interesting to see it play out, for sure. Plus if he somehow did become a triple wielder (a rare occurrence, as is my understanding) he'd somehow have to blend the aesthetics of red, blue, and violet. Intriguing.
