Acacia's Definitive Defense of Langris x Finesse
No one asked about this pairing, but I'm going to ramble about them anyway... especially since I realized I don't think I've ever actually written a proper post about them as this has been sitting in my drafts for over a year (A/N: Yikes! Sorry friends. I completely forgot I wrote this until today when I tried to find that post I was absolutely certain I had made about Langris x Finesse only to find it buried in my unposted drafts 😅🙈 But I'm posting it now to coincide with the ship ask game so it kind of works...? Maybe? I have no excuses...).
Anyways, dear goodness do I have thoughts about this ship. I’m not sure I can even wrangle them all, but I am going to try my best.
I’m sure it’s pretty clear from my blog that I have a deep love for my spatial mage boys and want good things for them which is one of the main reasons why I have a lot of concerns about the whole House Vaude soap opera. A friend of mine (irl) and I once discussed that plotline for literally 6 hours so I could go on and on about this for ages, but I have tried my best to be brief. That didn't really happen so I apologize in advance for all of the rambling.
I've tried to keep the focus of this post on Langris and Finesse's relationship, so please check out this post if you want to hear my many thoughts on the House Vaude succession drama as whole and in general. To keep things organized, I've divided this discussion into 2 main subsections for clarity under the cut!
(Warnings: Black Clover spoilers and discussion of some heavier topics such as childhood trauma and abuse. Arranged marriage is also mentioned)
Why I Think Langris and Finesse Genuinely Love Each Other (not necessarily in a romantic way but definitely in a selfless care and concern kind of way)
One of my most basic premises for my personal interpretation of Langris' character really comes down to the fact that I think what Langris actually wants more than anything else is unconditional love and to be accepted for who he is (rather than what he does/his accomplishments). He wants to have people who love him, a family—but he'd never admit this because he is convinced he'll never get it. He is convinced that love needs to be earned and he can't earn it, and his relationship with Lady Finesse is a perfect example of this, I think.
It hurts Langris that she is just the kindest person ever and she doesn't like/love him (or such is the reality in Langris' mind anyway given the fact that he has carried around that one time she complimented Finral as "she hates me" for literal years in the canon. But I digress). Langris doesn't like games he can't see a possibility of winning. He closes himself off from love and building meaningful relationships because he doesn't think he'll "win" people's love in the end. He's very cynical and jaded in this way, but more than that, he's wounded. It comes from a place of being denied love without strings attached, without conditions for his entire life and of being told his by his parents that love has to be earned and being convinced that he can't earn it, that nothing he does will ever be good enough and that he will never deserve the love he so desperately craves. And in that way, it comes from a fear of being hurt and rejected. When you care about someone, you give them the power to hurt you—and Langris doesn't want that kind of vulnerability. So I think he just completely counts himself out of the running when it comes to Finesse and defers to his brother—assuming (probably correctly) that she’d choose Finral if she was given a choice between the two of them.
All of that said, he can't quite stop himself from caring for her with a genuine love and respect (not necessarily in a romantic sense but he does care for her)—it’s just sealed off somewhere and not something he really thinks about or allows himself to feel (let alone label) until his brother "declaring war" on him brings all of that to the surface and he kind of has to reconcile how much he wants to be the Head of House Vaude (what he’s worked for his entire life) with how much he wants Lady Finesse to be happy. I love how in that scene there is actually a moment (at least in the anime) in which "the camera" turns and we're watching the scene unfold from Langris' eyes/perspective immediately before he gets involved and tells Finral to clean up his act.
Tumblr media
(A/N: If you listen very carefully you can hear the sound of Langris' entire world falling apart...)
Okay, bad jokes aside, this is a huge moment for Langris. It takes him all of five seconds to decide that Lady Finesse's happiness is far more important to him than House Vaude, than his title, his future, his own dreams and aspirations that he has worked for literally his entire life and, ultimately, is more important than everything he has looked to for his own self-worth and fulfillment up unto that point (which causes him to have a bit of an existential crisis as he tries to figure out who he is without those things, without being the next Head of House Vaude, but I digress again). It is an incredible act of love to set aside what someone wants for themselves in order to make another person happy—to choose what is best for another person even at great personal sacrifice. Regardless of how you want to qualify that love (romantic or platonic), it does not diminish the gravity of Langris' sacrifice and the willingness he shows to choose Finesse's happiness over the things that are (seemingly) the most important to him in the world.
Up until this point, Langris is this incredibly goal-oriented character who is set on becoming the best, the strongest, and eventually the head of House Vaude which comes off as self-interested and a little ruthless in his willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, but suddenly, here he is, ready to give all of that up so that Lady Finesse can have the chance to be happy. It's almost like he is saying (honestly, far louder and clearer than any words possibly could), "I love you more than all of that."
Why else would he be helping his brother take over as heir to House Vaude when that actually seems to be something Langris wants for himself? (I know the poll I ran examined some different ideas and interpretations but that's always been my personal take on it). It’s almost like in that moment, Langris has realized that he can’t make Lady Finesse happy (even if he wants to), but he thinks that Finral can so he wants to make Finral into the best he can be for her.
Once Langris is reasonably sure that Finral is at a place that he can make Finesse happy and has become a man "worthy of her," I could definitely see him stepping aside so that his brother could take over their House and marry her—purely out of concern for Finesse’s happiness, and there is something incredibly selfless and very beautiful about that.
I think Finesse's side of things is much more practical. The fact of the matter is that Finesse is royalty in a medieval society where she will inevitably be married off for a political alliance and/or to produce children, and she has probably always known that she needs to marry out of duty/responsibility, so I can’t really see her as that much of a hopeless romantic given the circumstances. If she allows herself anything, it is the hope that she will get to spend her life with someone who does care for her and who she can be content with. I don't think throughout most of Finesse's life and certainly not throughout this whole arranged marriage business that anyone has ever really asked her what she wanted or ever really cared about her wishes before, but Langris seems to have a genuine interest in her wishes and her happiness more so than anyone else. And I think she does care for him (again, not necessarily in a romantic way but it is a genuine care and concern of at least friendship).
As I discussed in this post, when Langris has all that elf-business and the King threatens to dissolve the betrothal and punish the Vaudes, it is Finesse who comes to their defense rather than taking what is quite possibly her only chance at an "out." And it is an informed, free choice on her part. I love her line in the English dub that she "knows Lord Langris and has no misgivings about him" and therefore essentially begs her uncle not to "judge him too harshly." I think there is something very strong and very courageous in her decision to believe in the good in Langris even when he is at his worst, and her concern is truly and completely focused on what is best for him. I'm especially thinking of that moment when she begs him to stop before he does something he will regret. She's worried about him: his hurt and his guilt. She really wants what's best for him, and it's this love for him and this belief in him that really brings out the best in Langris.
My absolute favorite thing about this ship (besides how selfless they are towards each other) is really that Finesse has this way of bringing out this softer, gentler side of Langris that, I think, very few people have actually seen. Langris himself is so insistent on hiding this (probably a learned response from growing up in an environment where any hint of emotion and any sensitivity is viewed as a weakness), but really he has such a deep capacity for love and given the opportunity would be fiercely loyal.
Langris may not care about a lot of people, but the ones he chooses to care about he will love forever. He's just such a tsun about it, I think, so it can be very hard for anyone (and especially for those with preconceived notions of him as a snotty stick-in-the-mud) to see that he's really very sweet and awkward as heck about his feelings. Langris' love might be quiet—it's not very flashy and usually shows itself in doing little, everyday things for the people he loves—but still waters run very, very deep and he has shown that he would do just about anything to protect the people he loves most and make them happy, no matter what that means for himself. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would die for Finesse if it came down to it.
Ultimately, I can imagine a lot of different outcomes for this relationship (some of which never, ever cross over into that romantic place). I really just want them both to be happy whether that means they end up together or not, but yes, I could see them happy with each other in a romantic sense under very specific circumstances since they do have such a selfless love for each other (but I think that is probably a discussion for another time because this is already super, super long so I'm cutting myself off in favor of the next section...).
Why I personally think Langris rather than Finral is better suited for Finesse
As much I don't like pitting ships against each other, I don't think it's avoidable in this case since she is going to be in arranged marriage with one of them. To paraphrase a favorite musical of mine, it's not a matter of "if" but which one. And I think it's best for me to just start off by saying that while I do genuinely like and appreciate Finesse and Finral as a ship as well, I personally think that Langris and Finesse are better suited for one another in the long term.
I will admit upfront that this is in part because of my own personal experiences of having a chronic illness (and needless to say that is a personal bias that colors my opinions, so please just keep that in mind), but I think it's important to talk about the fact that Finesse is chronically ill because it's not something I've ever really seen discussed when talking about ships for her and I really think it should be taken into account. Like Finesse, I have been sick for most of my life, and I can really relate to the kind of difficulties and limitations that Finesse likely experiences due to being chronically ill and the realities of the less active and much more slower-paced life she would lead and, by proxy, the life anyone who married her would have to lead. Again, I am not saying that I don’t like or couldn’t imagine her & Finral together (I do genuinely like that ship too), but I almost think Langris is better suited for her in that he actually wants (or seems to want) the slower-paced life they’d probably have together. For instance, there are likely to be frequent situations that would arise in which Finesse is too ill or too tired to go out and her husband would then be “forced” to stay home with her. With Langris, I think, there would never really need to be much of that feeling of guilt on Finesse’s part or the fear that she is taking away something from Langris or being a burden, because Langris isn’t super sociable and would just want to stay home anyway. In fact, let’s be honest here, he’d probably, actually feel kind of relieved that he has gotten out of unwanted socializing. Whereas Finral is a much more lively and sociable person (rather than an "old soul" like Langris), and though Finral would never, ever want Finesse to feel like a burden or to feel guilty about being sick, I could imagine there is more of that feeling (at least from Finesse’s side) that he has given up a lot more to be with her since his active social life would drastically change as soon as they married.
There's also the matter of the panic Finral would probably have whenever Finesse was ill or having a flare of symptoms. Of course, Langris would be worried as well, but I think because of his personality, he is better able to shelve that and help in a crisis rather than Finral who gets really worked up and then just sort of shuts down. Obviously this is something that can be learned over time, but I just worry that it would be a constant source of stress for Finral which would ultimately make Finesse very worried about him and upset that he is upset on her account. I think Finesse would have a lot of fear that the life she could give a lively, busy, & social person like Finral would be holding him back in some way. The question there is really: will what Finral wants out of life ever gel with the limitations Finesse has to live with? Whereas I don't think that question is as much of an issue with Langris since he is an old soul and incredibly steady, very unlike his more restless, adventurous, and high-energy brother.
I think Langris and Finesse are alike in this way. Though they have many differences in their personalities (and a really nice balance there), they have a lot of similarities in worldview and their attitudes towards life and their life goals—being more traditional, formal, and proper ‘old souls.' Whereas I think she and Finral have more similarities in personality (despite him being much more lively), they’re both incredibly kind, gentle & easy-going people who aren’t particularly ambitious and often make decisions based on what will make other people happy and "keep the peace." But worldview wise he seems much more modern and less traditional than her which I could see causing some tensions since I think they want different things out of life, in a way. It’s almost more important to be alike in life goals/worldview than personality, I think.
I also think Finesse and Langris share common interests and genuinely enjoy each other's company (as we get these glimpses of in the anime where they're just having a quiet, comfortable tea parties together for instance). Even if it started off as an obligation to spend time together because of this arranged marriage they were going to be in, I like to think that eventually Langris and Finesse actually became fairly good friends and came to genuinely enjoy each other's company. I guess it’s a bit unfair to Finral to bring this up since we haven’t seen him spend a lot of time with Finesse so we can't say that they don’t enjoy each other’s company but I just don’t see them having the same shared interests that she would have with Langris.
There is a lot more I could say about these two and their relationship, but I think that's enough ramblings for now. If you read this all the way through to the end, bless you. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Cheers!! 💖

Black Clover Next Generation I ♣️💘
Family Tree of Vaude-Roulacase-Vermillion
Tumblr media
And with Langris x Mimosa, I introduce a new crack ship. @mamavino made me ship it^^
Yes, there is a reason why none of the children wear the name Vaude. I have a story for it and I probably need to write it one day... To sum it up, at a certain point, Langris cut ties with his parents, as he realized their toxic love for him and prefers to stay in contact with his brother. The engagement between house Calmreich/Kira and house Vaude almost broke because of that, but thanks to Finrals determination, as well as Finesses, Langris' help and Finesses mother's ruse, Finral and Finesse still got to marry each other.
Since Langris later married into royalty and took the Vermillion name, none of the brothers children got the name Vaude. Ledior and Lillian had a distant cousin who would now one day take over the Vaudes. They're not happy about it.
Their children don't have much contact with their paternal grandparents. It is of course for the better. Lillian complaints more, but only because her grandchildren are royalty. Ledior sends some gifts for birthdays, even to Finrals children, but he never tried to mend the bonds with his sons.
Since Finesse has a poor health, it wasn't certain if she could even bear any children. So, Finral and Finesse considered adoption to have children, even though it's not considered as "proper" for nobility.
Joshua originally came from the streets and had to steal to survive. He once stumbled upon Finral, who decided to take him in momentarily since he obviously needed help. Soon, Finral and Finesse got attached to Joshua and offered to adopt him. Joshua, while growing attached to those two, was a bit hesitant, but a word from his new uncle Langris made accept the offer.
Lemony came from the orphanage. Finesse met him when she visited that orphanage for charity. She immediately took a liking into him and discussed with the director so that she could adopt him as soon as possible. She surprised Finral with a new child when he came home.
Anastasia was a surprise pregnancy for everyone. Of course, Finral was worried for Finesse, but she took a lot of rest during those nine months. After a difficult birth – which ended up leaving Finesse sterile for good, but she was fine thanks to Owen and Mimosa – a little girl was born, named after Finrals mother. Anastasia thankfully didn't got her mother's frail health, on the contrary, she is as healthy as an ox.
Joshua and Lemony are VERY protective of their little sister.
Mimosa and Langris were first friends before slowly starting to fall in love. Mimosa always put him in his place with that calm face she always has when angry... and surprisingly, Langris started to fell for her partly because of that. Really need to write at least one oneshot about them one day^^'
@acacia-may Lemony is named because I thought about you while creating him and because I remembered that you love ASOUE as well ;)
Jacinto is their first born, their two daughters are closer to age together.
They love to prank their father^^
Joshua has very pale purple wild hair and orange eyes, he has Spatial magic (which was handy during his stealing period). Lemony has emerald green hair, rather long & wavy and lemon yellow eyes, his magic is Obsidian. Anastasia has her mother's black hair and her father's pinkish purple eyes, she got Light magic from her mother.
Jacinto has the orange hair of his mother, chin length, and the blue eyes of his father, he got Vine magic. Iris has brown hair like Langris and green eyes like Mimosa, she is the only one of her sibling to got Spatial magic. Amaryllis has her mother's orange hair and her eyes are a mix of her parents, a bright blue-green, she has Leaves magic.
The two brothers are really close now, even more with their respective families.

Hi there, friend! I'd love to hear you ramble about two of my favorite Black Clover pairings Langris x Finesse and Finral x Vanessa, if you don't mind? Also, can I hear your Duck x Fakir from Princess Tutu opinions as well please? The awesome fanart you've been reblogging of them recently has given me life! Cheers!! 💖
Hi Acacia, thank you so much for the ask!! 💕 I’m having a horrifically busy semester, so I greatly appreciate the chance to sit down and talk about some of my favorite characters. This is SO EXCITING, prepare for a very lengthy post 😅
💛💙 Duck x Fakir (Starting with these two because they are my everything right now.)
My roommate convinced me to watch Princess Tutu a few weeks ago and I totally fell in love with it! The character arcs are so spectacular. I actually thought about asking you if you had seen it, as it seemed like something you might like based on the other shows you post about (But then I had already pitched it to everyone I knew irl so I figured I should just relax 😆).
But getting back to Duck and Fakir, I think they’re absolutely perfect for each other. Personally, it makes sense and compels me. I believe it’s canon that they have feelings for each other, or at least it’s strongly implied? Either way, Duck inspires Fakir and Fakir believes in Duck, which i think is so sweet, and I feel like Duck and Fakir bring out the best in each other. Also, the way they change together throughout the story is so beautiful! They both end up in way more mature and healthy places than when they started and were a big part of the other person’s growth. I think the best ships are the ones where the narrative weaves their stories together in that way.
This is just me ranting, but I need to mention how beautiful it is that Fakir loves Duck not as Princess Tutu, just as Duck. In Mytho’s case, he thought of Duck as a friend and he was very kind to her, but he didn’t love Duck, he loved princess Tutu. For Fakir to love the real her ties in SO WELL with how she grows from her insecurities and confusion about her identity. I could also scream for a very long time about the fact that Fakir would stay with her forever, even if she was only a duck. The love they have for each other is so mature, but also so sweet and innocent at the same time. They’re perfect!
That’s why the conclusion of their arc broke my heart so much, because they were perfect for each other and would have made each other so happy. It’s so bittersweet. I wouldn’t change it for anything, but I’m a sucker for the fics on ao3 where Fakir writes her back to being a girl. I can envision them having such a happy future together.
🩵🖤 Langris x Finesse
Im so excited to get the chance to talk about these two. They’re one of my all time favorite pairings and they’ve been on my mind recently! In my opinion, they make sense and are super compelling.
I sort of feel like at this point, I’ve thought about them so much that they’re more like my headcanon characters than a faithful representation of the actual characters in the show (I tend to do that lol😅). But even if I try my hardest to separate all of that from what is officially canon, I personally think that Langris and Finesse make more sense than Finesse and Finral. I could see those two being good together under different circumstances even if they aren’t my favorite ship, but I’m really not on board with the way the show is handling it. I’m not gonna open the can of worms that is Finral returning to his abusive household right now, but that is very unhealthy (and it seems like the show is encouraging it??) Even beyond that, I feel like Finral isn’t in the right headspace right now for a healthy relationship. He’s trying his best and I wholeheartedly believe that he cares about Finesse. But he’s been using romance and idealizing girls as a coping mechanism for a very long time, and from what we see on the show I feel like he’s romanticizing Finesse to a degree that wouldn’t be healthy in the long term. She’s his childhood crush and dream girl, and he feels like if he becomes “good enough” for her he can “win her heart.” I don’t know if I’m explaining this right at all, but in my opinion he’s not really treating her like a partner, as much he’s treating her like an ideal to someday be good enough to achieve, which is more tied in with his own self worth than actually seeing her and loving her for all she is. (Although I would totally see them together under different circumstances if he takes time to work on himself!)
Anyways getting back on track, we don’t see that kind of idealization with Langris. He seems to see her and what she wants more clearly, and loves her enough to accept that she is more interested in Finral and step aside. I feel like they so compatible as well, because neither of them are very passionate people like Finral or Vanessa are. I feel like they would have a beautiful, more subdued kind of love and would be able to fit neatly into each other’s lives.
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the time period before Langris was possessed when they were engaged. My heart always breaks when I think about the fact that Langris truly believed Finesse hated him. I think he always felt that she would rather marry Finral, and that he was never able to be really open with her because of this, and even that he resented her for it. I think it’s so compelling that all of this is essentially a misunderstanding, because Finesse does like him, and clearly cares about him and trusts him because even after he went crazy at the royal knights exam she tried to defend and protect him and wasn’t afraid of him (I love Finesse, she has such a beautiful heart). I think that after some character development on Langris’s end, they would be good for each other.
💚🩷 Finral x Vanessa
Vanessa and Finral my darlings!! They have such a sweet canon friendship and seem to support each other so well. For me they make sense and are compelling.
I love how on Vanessa’s end, she is gentle with him when he needs support, but she also isn’t afraid to speak her mind to him in the early seasons when he’s being a sleaze. She keeps him in line, both in the sense that she helps him be a better person and also that she pulls him back to reality when he’s spiraling and feeling insecure. And since I mentioned Finral’s idealization of girls before, I should say that I personally can’t see this happening with Vanessa because they’ve been friends for so long and have both seen each other at their worst. He knows her so well that he couldn’t idealize her if he tried. If he falls in love with her, it’s because he truly sees her and loves her for all her faults. I think they would work so well in a relationship together in a hypothetical future when Finral has decided that going back to House Vaude isn’t the right choice and has gotten over Finesse.
Also on the topic of the future, I see them being incredible parents. They are both passionate and caring people, and I believe they would fully devote themselves to not repeating their parent’s mistakes. It would need to be a slow burn and they would both be very cautious because they value their friendship so much. But I think they make so much sense together!
Thanks again for the ask, I had so much fun with this!!

Hi Lyra! Can I be a little out of the box and ask for Langris and Finesse for your game, please? (I guess they’ve been on my mind a bit since I’ve been thinking about Altan recently). I’m not sure your opinions on that ship, but if you don’t like it or it’s too hard for the game, don’t worry about it—maybe you could do Finral and Vanessa instead? (Or both if that isn’t asking for too much 🙈) Thank you so much, dear! 🥰
Hiya Acacia 😁!! Of course you can request Langris and Finesse, i actually like the Langris/Finesse ship so it wasn’t difficult for the ask game at all! I also did Finral and Vanessa since you asked for them too hehe 🥰! I hope you enjoy dear~!
Their quotes say:
Finesse: You’re a really caring person, you just don’t let others see it
Langris: All I want is to protect you and keep you safe
I do not own the template being used!

Finral: [sends a video of himself fist fighting an alley cat and losing]
Finral: Sorry wrong person.
Vanessa: No wait there are multiple stories in this ten second video and I want to know them all. Who was that passed out on the ground?
Finral: Langris. We were looking for a proper gift for Finesse-san's birthday and the cat attacked him. Beast took him out in seconds so I tried to defend his honor but lost horribly.
Vanessa: This video just keeps on giving.

Welcome back Acacia, I hope you’re doing well and that life has been kind to you 🥺💕! For your ask game how about Langris and Finesse, or maybe a platonic one for Ezio and Altan please 🥰? Sending you hugs and love 🫂💕!
Aww thank you so much, Lyra! Life has been a bit rough, but I am hanging in there. Thanks for the well wishes! 💕I hope you are doing wonderfully and congratulations again on your new milestone event (very exciting!!) 🥰
Thank you so much for your ask and for playing my song + headcanon game! It's so nice to play an ask game again, and I was so thrilled to see your ask about Langris x Finesse! Have I converted you or are you just indulging me by asking about one of my favorite pairings? 😁😂 Also, the cousins too! Aww that's so sweet! 🥰
I've put this all below the cut because I ended up rambling a bit (sorry about that 😅). Thanks again for your ask, dear! Sending you lots of love & hugs as well!! 🫂💕
Langris x Finesse--dear goodness do I love them! Just thinking of them rekindles my passion for Black Clover! Criminally underrated ship, in my opinion. I have an entire Spotify playlist about them, so I will admit it was a little hard to narrow it down. In the end I've decided on a Finesse song since I feel like most of the time when I ramble about this pairing it's always very Langris-centric (i.e. his feelings and his devotion for her) so I don't talk about Finesse's side of things too much. (Sorry Finesse). The song "A Quiet Thing" really captures how I imagine Finesse's love for Langris would develop as a very slow burn and dare I say "quiet thing" over time, really building on this quiet, steadfast devotion that endeared me to this pairing in the first place. I love this song for them since it's really about how some love (like the love I imagine Langris and Finesse would have for each other) is "a quiet thing," and even if it's not the flashy, grand "fireworks" kind of love we tend to think of from epics romances, it's still really beautiful in its own way.
A Quiet Thing (Live) - YouTube
And here's where the headcanons come in:
Langris and Finesse both are very "quiet" in the way they show their love, neither one of them are going to plan the big romantic gestures or have these huge over-the-top love confessions, but they are both very devoted and steadfast people. They love spending time together, really just enjoying each other's company in these everyday moments as they have tea or tend to her garden together. Langris might not have the romanticism of someone like say Finral (those big "band" or fireworks"), but he takes care of her. He listens to her and remembers all these little details about her and her life. He pulls weeds from her garden when she mentions she's worried about it but too ill to tend her garden herself. He surprises her with a few of her favorite flowers or her favorite soup when she's feeling down. It's in these moments that Finesse sees that despite his somewhat frosty exterior, Langris really does have this soft side and cares very deeply about "his people." It's his soft steadfastness and devotion to her that really leads her to really fall in love with him. And when she does, she is a little shy about it and skirts around the topic, but ultimately, she is the one to confess first.
*-*-*
As for the Altan & Ezio cousin friendship part of the ask... It's so wholesome and makes me so happy that you care about my oc enough to ask about him. I like to imagine they would get along well and be good and supportive cousins and friends for each other so perhaps a bit generic (but one of my all-time favorite songs) I've chosen "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor (the Carole King version is also excellent).
You've Got a Friend (2019 Remaster) - YouTube
Related Headcanon:
As the older cousin, Ezio has always tried to look out for Altan, in a similar way to how Finral always tried to look out for Langris, but in this case, Altan has always felt comfortable coming to Ezio if he was ever in trouble or needed help. In return, Altan always tries to cheer Ezio up when he's feeling down (or heartbroken). He'll make a warm, comforting cup of tea for him (something he learned from his mother, Finesse) and is a great listener when/Ezio ever needs to talk about his troubles.

Note: This story was specifically written for and gifted to another writer friend of mine who had the idea of "Sea Shanty Langris" having a double act with Finral (who plays the ukulele). It was heavily inspired by the song "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" by Jim Croce (YouTube), and the song is (briefly) quoted in the piece denoted by italicized text & quotation marks.
Story Below the Cut. Thank you for reading!
Langris always knew his competitive streak would get him into trouble one day. What he didn’t know was that this “trouble” would land him behind the curtains of the little stage at Charmy and Vanessa’s restaurant, nervously twisting his hands around the neck of his lute. He should have never told that drunk witch he could play. That was his first mistake. His second was underestimating how good she was at cards.
“You ready, Langris?” she asked with a wink and a smile.
His brow furrowed, and he frowned at her. “This is ridiculous,” he muttered bitterly, but Vanessa just laughed.
“A bet is a bet, and you lost,” she insisted with a slight shrug of her shoulders and a pointed tilt of her head.
Langris huffed. He was sure that a normal person would have wanted money as spoils of gambling, but Vanessa wasn’t a normal person. He should have known she would want to humiliate him if she beat him—his third mistake. He huffed again. “Can’t you just take my money or something?”
“Nope.” Vanessa winked at him again. “I want to hear you play, and this is my only chance.”
“I already told you I’m terrible at it. It was just a hobby I tried to pick up…”—he shook his head—“I’m not musician.”
“We’ll see…” hummed Vanessa.
Langris wrinkled his nose at her. “Don’t you think you’re taking this too far? You picked my song. You made me wear this ridiculous outfit—”
“Hey!” she interrupted. “I made that.”
Langris blinked at her. He was honestly a little surprised that she would take ownership of having sewn these clothes. He certainly wouldn’t have. The shirt was striped in blindingly bright colors and had a deep v in the neckline that laced in the front for goodness only knows why, and his pair of dark, skinny pants were too snug—Langris suspected on purpose. To top it all off, Vanessa had also given him a pair of bloodred boots with curled, pointed toes and an earring that she, herself, had clipped onto his right ear. He shook his head. “I look like a pirate.”
“It’s a good look for you—very handsome.” Laughing, Vanessa ruffled her hand through his hair, and Langris glowered at her though his cheeks grew warm, in spite of himself. “Mmm…” she hummed thoughtfully, taking a step back to look at him.  “Though now that I’m seeing it all together it kind of reminds me of Finral.”
Langris bristled. That only made it worse.
“I hate you…” he muttered dryly, under his breath, but Vanessa just ruffled his hair again with an affectionate smile like he was just a huffy little kid.
“I know that’s not true,” she replied playfully tapping him on the nose. Langris’ cheeks flushed pink, but he crossed his arms.
“What if I just…refuse?”
Vanessa quirked an eyebrow at him, but she shrugged. “You won’t. I know you won’t. You lost, and you know it. You won’t be able to live with yourself if you don’t hold up your end of the bargain.”
“But I didn’t agree to any of this,” Langris protested more forcefully than he had been intending.
“Look,” sighed Vanessa. “You can get huffy with me all you want, but I won fair and square and I’m not the one who had an existential crisis and learned how to play the lute.” She chuckled before she teased, “How exactly did that happen again?”
“I don’t know,” hissed Langris through his teeth. “You tell me.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes, but she eventually played along and bantered. “Well, I think it was probably something along the lines of: your brother ripped the rug out from under you and stole everything you ever wanted”—she began counting on her fingers—“your home, your title, your future, the only woman you ever loved—”
“That’s not—!” Langris stopped abruptly as he watched Vanessa’s mouth twitch into a smile at his flaming cheeks which told a much different story than his impassioned protestations.
Her smile widened. “So then you decided you had nothing to lose by just picking up the lute and following your dreams of singing sea shanties in bars.”
Pressing his palm to his forehead, Langris let out a long and disgruntled sigh. “I wish I had never told you about that.”
“Well, you did so no use in getting upset about it now, and come on... I’m not even making you play in front my customers.” She paused. “Because I want them to come back.”
Vanessa winked at him. Langris, however, was entirely unamused.
“And you don’t even have to play by yourself,” she continued.
Langris snorted. “What? Are you going to play with me?”
“Not me,” said Vanessa with a bright smile.
As if on cue, Finral appeared out of a shiny, spatial portal in the wall wearing a nearly identical outfit. Langris’ eyes narrowed, but his brother beamed at him with an exuberant wave of his hand. “Hi Langris!”
“No.” Langris turned to Vanessa with a pointed glare. “Absolutely not.”
“Aww, but Langris I’ve been practicing,” Finral insisted. “I felt bad that you had to play all by yourself, so I thought we could play together.”
“No,” Langris repeated even more forcefully than before. “This is humiliating enough. The last thing I need is you showing me up on the piano.”
“I wasn’t going to play piano.” Finral explained with an understanding nod. “I’ve been practicing the ukulele.”
With a proud smile, Finral held up the instrument, and Langris buried his face in his hands. This couldn’t be happening.
After a deep breath, he turned almost pleadingly to Vanessa, but the amused look on her face made it abundantly clear that she could never be persuaded to see reason. That didn’t stop Langris from trying, however.
“Vanessa please. I’ve been a good sport up until now.”
Vanessa just laughed, and Langris supposed he probably deserved that after having been basically forced into this concert kicking, screaming, and complaining the entire time.
“Try again,” she quipped teasingly. Langris rolled his eyes but sighed.
“The song. How will we split up the song?”
Vanessa hummed. “I’m sure you’ll figure something out.”
“I’m not here to steal your thunder,” Finral interjected, and Langris shook his head.
“That’s not what I’m worried about…I…” He stumbled over his words, scrambling to find the most compelling argument he could think of. “You really think I should be singing a love song with my brother.”
Vanessa’s brow furrowed thoughtfully, but a smile tugged at her mouth. “It’s not necessarily a romantic love song. I think it’s the perfect song choice.”
Something sparkled in her eyes as they met his, and Langris huffed. She had planned this all along. Of course, she had.
“Fine. Whatever…” Langris conceded at last. “Let’s just get this over with…”
*-*-*
After around five minutes of hushed mumblings and scrambling to figure out who would sing or play what and Vanessa’s insistence that Langris himself sing the chorus, they finally walked out onto the stage with lute and ukulele in hand. Thankfully the restaurant was empty, as Vanessa had promised, and they were the only ones there save Charmy and Rill who were seated with Vanessa at a table closest to the stage. Langris tried his best to ignore them as he began the intro, and Finral quickly joined in on the ukulele. He could feel himself unintentionally speeding up the tempo as he grew more and more nervous and more and more eager for this nightmare to finally be over. Finral quirked an eyebrow at him but continued strumming his ukulele trying to keep Langris’ uneven time.
When it was Langris’ turn to sing, his voice came out emotionless, disgruntled, and almost flat. Vanessa looked far too happy about this. He glared right at her as he half-talked, half-sang through his teeth, “Every time I tried to tell you, the words just came out wrong so I’ll—” His voice cracked, and he stopped abruptly as his eyes widened. In the back wall of the restaurant near the bar stood Finesse, still dressed in her coat and scarf.
“Langris?” whispered Finral in confusion before he, too, noticed their unexpected guest. “Finesse?” he exclaimed with a bright smile. “You came!”
“You invited her?” choked Langris with red cheeks.
Finral sheepishly scratched the nape of his neck. “Well…you know…she loves music and so I thought she’d like to see us play together.”
“I’m so sorry I’m late,” said Finesse as her face flushed.
“You’re right on time,” insisted Vanessa with a reassuring smile as she draped an arm around her and led her off to their table. “Finral and Langris were just warming up. Right, boys?”
Langris could have sworn she winked directly at him. He swallowed hard.
“Yeah…that was just practice,” said Finral with a bright smile before glancing over at Langris who barely managed a nod between his pounding heartbeat and trembling hands. He couldn’t believe Vanessa…or perhaps he could believe her which only made things worse. If he had to venture a guess this had been her plan all along. Langris huffed. If he wasn’t so livid, he might have been a little impressed. As it was now, however, he was much too nervous about the situation at hand to feel much of anything else.
When he and Finral began their song again, Langris found he couldn’t look at their audience, so he turned his attention to his brother and tried to lose himself in the music.
His shaking fingers somehow plucked the strings on the lute, and his singing voice, though it wavered a bit, rang out clear and crisp in the empty restaurant, “Every time I tried to tell you, the words just came out wrong…So I’ll have to say ‘I love you’ in a song…”
Langris’ brow furrowed as he heard his brother sniffle. He shook his head slightly as he began to play the interlude. His dumb brother…There were tears glistening in the corners of his eyes.
Something suddenly panged in Langris’ chest, and he immediately felt very exposed—vulnerable. His cheeks flushed. Was his brother picking up some emotion in his words that Langris’ hadn’t intended? He had started to sing to him only because, in the moment, he had thought it would be the least embarrassing—that his brother was the least likely person in the room to judge him for singing something so soppy, but now he has to go and…and cry like that…like he had never heard…
Langris stopped abruptly—before realizing almost immediately that he was still supposed to be playing. He willed his trembling hands to find their notes as he ignored the blinking light suddenly clicking on in his brain. No wonder Finral was crying. He had never actually heard Langris say he loved him before.
His face grew incredibly warm, and he was certain he was blushing a bright red. He had been so worried about inadvertently expressing romantic love to Lady Finesse that he hadn’t even considered the possibility of expressing familial love to his brother instead, in his quest to avoid spilling the contents of his heart. Resisting the urge to bury his face in his hands, Langris let out a long and heavy sigh. After all that time that Vanessa had pushed and prodded him to tell his brother how much he meant to him and to tell Finesse how he really felt, she had essentially tricked him into singing it. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at what was surely an incredibly smug expression on her face. The last thing he needed right now was one of her teasing winks and knowing smiles. That brilliant, conniving drunk witch covering all of her bases…
Yes, he conceded, she was brilliant—infuriating but brilliant, and—his mouth twitched just barely in the corners—he had to admit she had got him. So, he sighed with a tilt of his head in her general direction as he started the chorus again.
*-*-*
“So I’ll have to say I love you in a song…”
As soon as the last chord sounded, his brother threw his arms around him and hugged him tightly with tears in his eyes. “I love you too, Langris!” exclaimed Finral far too loudly.
With flushing cheeks, Langris wrinkled his nose and patted his brother on the back. “Yeah…yeah…whatever.”
Over Finral’s shoulder he could see Lady Finesse sniffling with misty-eyes, but she said gently, “I had no idea you had such a nice singing voice, Langris.”
Langris cleared his throat and ignored the blush creeping into his cheeks. He met Vanessa’s eyes which were much more empathetic and touched than vindicated. Still she gave him that all-too-familiar knowing smile, and with just that hint of bantering smugness, she mouthed the words, “you’re welcome” at him.
Langris rolled his eyes, but he sighed and patted his still crying brother on the shoulder. He would have time to get back at her later, but, for now at least, he supposed she was right—he really did have to say ‘I love you’ in a song.

Hiya Acacia, I’m so glad you’re doing well after taking your break 🥺🫂💕! For the ask game, may I ask for 4, 14, 21, and 41 for Langris and Altan’s mom (her name is escaping me at the moment I’m so sorry 😭!) please 🥺?
Aww thank you, Lyra! I appreciate that, and I'm really excited about this ask. I can't tell you how much joy it brought me to see Lady Finesse referred to as "Altan's Mom"--really just made my day when I saw your ask come in (a couple of days ago. Sorry for the delay). I would be thrilled to answer these questions for you! 🥰
This ended up having a lot of unsolicited ramblings (Sorry about that. I have a lot to say about this ship 😅😂) so I have put the answers under the cut.
(Warnings: Black Clover spoilers. Mentions pregnancy and death)
Ship Ask: Langris Vaude x Finesse Calmreich
4. Who initiates affection? Why does the other not initiate affection as much?
My gut reaction is that Finesse is likely the more affectionate (especially early on in the relationship) because I just really can't imagine a situation in which Langris wouldn't be incredibly hesitant to initiate any sort of affection with her (at least in the beginning of their relationship) for a variety of reasons which I will list here.
First of all, my perception of Langris is incredibly awkward when it comes to expressing his feelings. He trips over his words and is just not touchy-feely at all. I think part of that is just him being Langris, but there are also outside circumstances that should probably be taken into account. He grew up in essentially a loveless home. I don't think his parents ever even hugged him and they only praised him when they wanted to hurt Finral or to make themselves look good so affectionate words feel cheap to him and I think being openly affectionate just doesn't come naturally to him in any relationship, especially a romantic one. But on the flip side of that, I think that also means that the idea of affection is very special to him and very meaningful because it isn't something he has ever really experienced and, in that way, even something like holding hands would be a really big deal to Langris and he wouldn't be the type to throw out compliments or verbal expressions of love without meaning them.
Secondly, his situation with Lady Finesse is complicated and kind of delicate because they are in this betrothal and arranged marriage. I think in Langris's mind, when they are betrothed (and especially early in that relationship), he likely believes that she's only with him because she has to be and that he wouldn't be her first choice. Their relationship is kind of built on this obligation, but Langris doesn't want Finesse to feel obligated to be with him. He loves and respects her, and he wants her to be happy. I think he is hoping that if they are going to be together it will ultimately be because that's something they want for themselves and are choosing for themselves (at least on some level) instead of viewing it as "well this is just something I have to do even though it's not what I actually want." At the same time, it is difficult for Langris to imagine Finesse (or, quite frankly, anyone) actually wanting to be with him, so I think he has a lot of fear and insecurities about her being forced into this relationship with him. It makes him very sensitive and hesitant to take initiative because he overthinks it (i.e. "Well if I hold her hand, what if she doesn't want me to hold her hand? But then she feels like she has to hold my hand even though she's uncomfortable just because we're betrothed?").
Lastly, I tend to take a lot of the historical context into account when I think about these relationships, and in a medieval society a young noblewoman like Finesse was most likely told to just go along with whatever her husband wants in regards to most things, affection being one of them, and I think Langris is very sensitive to that and would want to make sure that she didn't feel obligated to return his affection. I think this is especially true in their betrothal because, again, in the historical context, they probably would have been chaperoned and even so much as holding hands with each other before getting married would have been frowned upon. I think Langris is kind of stickler for the rules sometimes: he's very responsible and kind of old-fashioned. Plus, he has a lot of respect for Lady Finesse so I think he'd be concerned about propriety and her honor so to say, so I can't see him really taking a lot of that initiative when it comes to affection for that reason.
In a world where they do marry each other, I like to think it's after they have reached a mutual understanding and agreement that this is something they both actually want (at least to a certain extent). At that point, even if Finesse hasn't expressed romantic love for him, Langris is at least reasonably assured that she believes they can be happy together. In such a situation, I think he would still feel awkward (because he's Langris) and would be hesitant to express his affection out of what he would consider respect for her (and also not wanting to make her uncomfortable if she doesn't reciprocate his romantic feelings for her). So in my mind, it would really fall on Finesse to kind of take the lead there or at least to express that she would be open to receiving affection from him. He just needs that positive reassurance that it's okay, I think, because he doesn't want to put her in this awkward situation and he is just not good at picking up on subtle signals. I feel like she would either have to take the initiative (i.e. she holds his hand and he can't overthink it or worry about it) or make it beyond obvious that she wants to receive affection from him (i.e. I can imagine a situation where Langris is the one who initiates their first kiss but it's only after she has told him she loves him). This would prove a bit difficult for Finesse, I think, because she is more shy just by personality and likely had a strict upbringing as royalty so she's very proper and polite which would make it difficult for her to take that initiative. I imagine this is part of the reason they have the slowest of slow burns because it'll take Finesse a while to pluck up the courage to take that initiative and either show affection herself or tell Langris how she feels, and Langris just isn't going to do that himself without her giving the green light first (if that makes sense?).
It's interesting because I think Langris takes a lot of initiative in every other aspect of his life, but when it comes to his relationship with Finesse, he'd really just throw the ball into her court and let her decide what she wanted out of their relationship. In his mind, I think he loves Finesse and is just happy that he gets to spend his life with her and take care of her. It doesn't matter to him what that relationship looks like--for instance, they could have this completely platonic marriage and never even hold hands with each other and he'd still be thrilled because, ultimately, (at least in the way that things work on in my mind), Finesse is the only woman he has ever loved and she has (at least on some level) chosen to marry him and that is more than enough and more than he ever imagined, so he just doesn't have any expectations. I apologise that I'm going to pull in something from a wip of mine, but I wrote this kind of confession scene for them once and after Langris admits that he has loved her for a very, very long time, Finesse is shocked and confused and asks him why he never told her. Then he says:
“Because I…I never thought that you would ever—could ever—reciprocate, and I didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable or sorry for me or obligated. I was and I am truly happy that I get to share my life with you and try my best to take care of you and make you happy. It would be greedy to even wish for anything else—to wish for your—“ His voice hitched, and he stopped but the meaning of his words was clear. “It’s more than I deserve.”
And I think that that is his big hesitation when it comes to expressing affection to her. He can't believe that she could actually love him, and he would feel guilty to even wish for her love and affection because he feels it is more than he deserves. Just getting to share their lives is enough so he isn't even going to hope for anything more than that and he believes that expressing affection to her would just make things awkward between them. I think Langris wants to be wanted and to be unconditionally loved, so he would be absolutely crushed by even the idea of Finesse (who is, in this universe anyway, the woman he loves) forcing herself to show him affection or return his affection out of a sense of duty or obligation--just because they're in this arranged marriage and not because she actually loves him for who he is. It would destroy him, and he knows it, so I think he avoids it by giving her the power to determine what their relationship will look like.
And, of course, in my mind, when I imagine them together, I like to imagine that they have this extremely slow burn romance and eventually Finesse does grow to love him in a romantic way. I like to think that eventually they end up on the same page on where they stand: they do genuinely love each other romantically and want this romantic relationship with each other--want a real marriage and to have a family with each other not out of obligation but out of love. Once they reach that understanding and that place where they really are on the same page, I can see Langris taking more initiative when it comes to showing affection, but in the beginning, it has to be Finesse without question.
14. Do they enjoy PDA, or are they more private with affection?
Absolutely not! I feel this incredibly strongly--it's a very visceral "NO" for me. (A/N: there's this song called "Hell No" by Ingrid Michaelson and as soon as I saw this question the refrain started playing in my mind😂). Jokes aside, Langris and Finesse are both such private people and would likely feel uncomfortable even holding hands in front of their friends. Building off of the previous question a little bit, they are awkward enough about showing affection when they're alone, I can't imagine that they would ever show affection to each other in public. It's not that they don't love each other--they're just very, very private about it because Finesse is shy and Langris is awkward and doesn't feel his private life and relationship is anybody else's business. There's something kind of endearing about this mental image I have of them where they're really the type of people who will blush if they hold hands with each other in public.
(A/N: This is especially funny to me given the fact that I generally imagine this ship exists in a world where Finral marries Vanessa and they're just the most touchy-feely couple of all time, so there's this huge contrast between them practically hanging off of each other when, meanwhile, Langris is bright red in the face because he brushed hands with his wife. I'm sure Vanessa (good-naturedly) teases him about it. It's her job as his sister-in-law, after all).
21. Do they enjoy domestic life?
Yes, I think they definitely do enjoy domestic life. In my mind, Finesse always had more domestic dreams and wanted to settle down and have a quiet life with a family. I think Langris wanted this too, but he never really allowed himself to wish for it because he thought it would never happen for him or at least would never happen for him in the way he wanted (i.e. he might be forced to get married one day but it would be a duty and obligation, nothing something he and his spouse for themselves based on real, genuine love for each other). I think that in a world where Langris gets to marry someone he loves and who loves him in return, he would be absolutely overjoyed. Even if their relationship started off as an arranged marriage and an obligation, it grew into something more and deeper than that, and in the end, (at least in my mind) they really chose to share their lives together and have a family not because its what's expected of them not because their parents promised them in marriage to each other for societal reasons, and not because House Vaude needs an heir but rather they build this life with each other and welcome children because they truly love each other and want to raise a family together. And in that, they are able to find real and lasting happiness with each other.
They have a quiet and slower-paced life together, but I think they're happier together at home with their children than they've ever been. Langris, especially, is happier in this domestic life as a husband and a father than he ever even imagined that he could be. It's the little everyday things like having tea as a family or reading to the children before tucking them into bed or spending an afternoon laughing together in the garden or sitting by the fireplace chatting about their day or just quietly enjoying each other's company. It's all that Finesse ever dreamed of for herself even from when she would play house with her dolls as a little girl, and it's everything Langris ever wanted but never believed he'd get to have. It's true domestic bliss in my opinion, and I like to think they are very, very happy.
41. What would they do if they lost the other?
I think this depends on what it means to "lose" the other. For instance, at this point in the story, I am almost entirely convinced that Langris would step aside for Lady Finesse to marry his brother as soon as Finral "proved that he is worthy of her" if he genuinely believed that's what would make her happy. Her happiness is such a powerful motivator for him (arguably the most powerful motivator for him), and if he truly believed that Finral could make her happy when he, himself, couldn't, there is really no doubt in my mind that he would give up anything to make that happen--even if that meant losing everything he has worked for his entire life and his chance to ever be with her in a romantic way. In that situation, I think he would be genuinely happy for both Lady Finesse and Finral and carry no ill-will or jealousy towards them whatsoever, and I can imagine that he'd even move on and find love with someone else someday (if he wanted a relationship at all, that is).
But if "lost" is used in the sense of her dying, I don't think he would cope well. In a universe where they ended up together especially, I tend to think that Finesse is really the love of his life and, without being hyperbolic, the only woman he has ever loved. I like to hope he would find some healing if he lost her, but I don't think he would move on and love again after she passed away. And in fact, having to remarry (if, for instance, they didn't have children and House Vaude was still in need of an heir), would likely destroy him, especially if she died in some way that he felt responsible for (even if it really wasn't his fault)--for instance if she died from complications due to childbirth. (A/N: I have a wip that uses this as a major plot point actually, and not to go off on a tangent but this is one of the big reasons that I think Langris is so afraid of having children. I think he is really just terrified of what a pregnancy and childbirth would do to Finesse given her already delicate health. In one of my stories, I wrote a line that Langris was "insistent that he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if something happened to her because she was carrying his child," and I genuinely believe that's true because of the type of person Langris is. He is so incredibly hard on himself and prides himself so much on being perfect and perfectly responsible, he would take complete (and undue) responsibility for her death and would really just crumble under the weight of the guilt and the grief, I think. I like to imagine that with the support of his brother and his friends, he could eventually find healing and move forward in his life without it completely tearing him apart, but it would be rough and is a very sad possibility for me to consider.
I think Finesse would probably fare better. If he died after they married, I don't think she'd have much of a desire to marry again, but I do think she would be able to find solace and healing faster than he would. She'd be heartbroken and grief-stricken of course, but I think because of her more naturally positive outlook, she would be able to find a sense of hope even in the despair of that situation.
It's also worth mentioning that I've long considered the possibility that Langris will die at the end of the Black Clover canon. It seems like the least messy way to wrap up this whole complicated House Vaude situation with him, his brother, and Lady Finesse. In that scenario, I think Finesse would definitely grieve for him. Even if she didn't have romantic feelings for him, he was her dear friend, and she did care for him very much. I think she would miss him and be heartbroken if he died. And maybe I've been reading too much classic literature, but I think eventually she and Finral would get married and one day have a son who they would name after Langris. This definitely seems pretty plausible to me, and I've been genuinely worried about it for a long time. But that kind of exists in a separate universe in my mind.

Seeing your lovely alternate universe headcanons for Vanessa x Finral inspired me to send in an ask for Langris x Finesse. Can I have 💖 and 🤍 for those two? Thank you!! 😊
Oh my gosh, friend! This ask is honestly a dream come true for me, ngl. I saw this come in and started squealing (and I clearly have no impulse control and was immediately inspired so it has been answered right away😅). Needless to say, I love this ship and never, ever get to talk about it, so thank you so much for this opportunity! I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who likes them! 🥰
I’m going to include some ramblings about them, but please feel free to disregard and skip to the headcanons under the cut. 😁 On some level, I think I might have the strongest feelings about this ship out of all of the ships in what I would consider the "House Vaude drama cluster" and I've been working on a bingo ask about it for over a week now because I have so much to say. 😅 This pairing is just so, so good for both of them, I think, and say what you will about all of the drama (and emotional whiplash) going on with the Spatial Mage Brothers, but the one thing I am certain about in this entire House Vaude Soap Opera is that Langris loves Finesse.
Whether you want to qualify that love as platonic or romantic, it doesn't really matter (and it's possible that Langris himself doesn't even know how to qualify it), but the bottom line is that he loves her to the extent that he is willing to put her happiness and what is best for her over everything else. This man is literally willing to give up his hopes and dreams, what he has worked for his entire life, and, on a certain level, his entire sense of identity as this "perfect son" and heir to the House of Vaude on the chance that it would afford her the opportunity to be happy. His entire world comes crashing down in that moment when Finral declares war on him, but it takes him all of thirty seconds to decide that the most important thing to do in this situation is to go out of his way to make sure that Finral becomes a man who is worthy of Finesse and who can make her happy in a way that Langris (perceives that he) can't.
And for goodness sakes, he is engaged to the woman! It would be so easy for Langris to dig in his heels and just marry her out of spite for his brother or because (arguably) he likes her and wants to marry her, but he doesn't—even though they have been engaged for a long time (which if the social structure of the Clover Kingdom is actually a medieval society, is really, really bizarre and unusual). And I think it all comes down to the respect and the love he has for her. What he wants most of all is for Finesse to be happy, and secondary only to that, he wants to be wanted and loved by her. He doesn't want her to be with him just out of obligation--if they're going to marry, I really think he wants it to be because it's something they both want. Yes, their situation is complicated because there is the whole arranged marriage debacle, but I just can't imagine that Langris would want to marry her if he didn't think that was something that could make her happy. Otherwise, they would be married right now [and I wouldn't be up at 3:30 in the morning stressing about the relationship drama of fictional characters and whether or not Finral freaking Roulacase Vaude is going to go back to his abusive home at the end of this series but I digress…]
Anyway...I apologize for all of the ramblings (that's a lot more than you asked for and I am sorry for that 😅). I've put your headcanons below the cut (because they are lengthy), and I hope you like them! Thank you so much again for the ask! 🥰

Langris Vaude x Finesse Calmreich Headcanons
💖 -- Alternate Universe
A/N: In a similar way to my Finral x Vanessa headcanons which you mentioned (I'm so glad you liked those too by the way. Thank you so much! 🥰), I have quite a few AUs about these two also. One of my favorites is an AU in which Finesse becomes Queen of the Clover Kingdom in the future and Langris is the prince consort (plus built-in 24-hour security detail given the fact that he is such a powerful Magic Knight in his own right). However, I think I will tell you about one of my other favorite AUs for them since I was thinking about it recently. There is a companion AU to my Vanessa x Finral Tangled AU which is Finesse x Langris as Beauty and the Beast with the Golden Dawn as all of the talking furniture. The two storylines are actually intertwined and going on concurrently in my head, so I hope you won't mind if I use this one here (I wouldn't have if you hadn't mentioned Vanessa and Finral in your ask, but still I'll only include the bits of their Rapunzel plotline that are relevant)...
In a Fairytale (Beauty & The Beast) AU...
The Vaude Family are the ruling monarchs of a faraway kingdom and live in a castle deep in the woods. Langris is their younger but far more successful son; however, he is cynical, practical, and somewhat cold. His more callous attitude upsets an enchantress who turns him into a hideous beast, his father and mother into a stapler and a paperweight, and his guards and servants (most of the Golden Dawn members) into various enchanted household items. Only Finral is spared because he is actually nice to the enchantress--though he believes he is cursed. Things quickly become tense at the castle because Finral was spared the fate of everyone else (and things weren't so great between the family to begin with), so he runs away from home and lives the life of a wannabe outlaw and miscreant.
Meanwhile, the beast legend grows, and the people of the neighboring kingdom under the rule of Augustus Kira Clover become particularly frightened. Prior to all of this, King Clover had agreed to form a diplomatic union with the Vaudes' kingdom by arranging a marriage between his niece, Finesse, and their future King, and now that there is this whole, dreadful beast business, he basically dumps his niece off at their doorstep as a "peace offering." Langris is absolutely disgusted by this display and tries his best to keep Finesse happy and comfortable given the horrible circumstances.
As they grow closer and develop a friendship with one another, the Golden Dawn furniture begins to hope that she and Langris will fall in love and break the spell before it becomes permanent. Towards the end of the enchantment’s limbo phase (before it becomes permanent), they plan a very special and romantic dinner with cake, fancy clothes, and ballroom dancing for Finesse and Langris, but their plans are swiftly thwarted when Finral, who as far as everyone knows Finesse always liked better than Langris, appears for the first time in literal years with the "Princess of the Forest of Witches" who really wants to see Castle Vaude's wine cellar for some reason.
Though David the wine glass tries to chase Finral out of the castle in exasperation, the damage is already done (so they think) as Finral had already reunited with Finesse (supposedly) rekindling the childhood love he had had for her before he had left home. Eventually, however, Langris suggests Finral take Princess Vanessa to see the annual Lantern Festival in the Clover Kingdom so he leaves to bring her there. The Golden Dawn's romantic evening plans resume, and Langris eventually dances with Finesse (after she practically begs him) as William Vangeance (a candlestick) sings a beautiful ballad that moves Alecdora Sandler (a clock) to tears.
Despite the magic of the evening, Langris can't shake the feeling that Finesse is unhappy. After they dance together, he takes her out onto the veranda to watch the floating lanterns in the distance, and he asks her if she would be happier if she didn't have to marry him and got to marry Finral instead. She doesn't answer, but she blushes which he takes as answer enough. He explains to her, as matter of factly as he can manage, that as he is only the second son, it is Finral who is actually supposed to inherit and, ultimately, is supposed to marry her. He, therefore, plans to step aside and allow his brother to take over the kingdom while he lives out the rest of his days in the woods as a beast. Finesse is perplexed but doesn't argue with him. The Golden Dawn is so hopeful that this sacrifice on Langris' part will break the spell, but unfortunately, only half of the criteria is met--Langris has learned to love but it isn't returned. (David bemoans the prospect of spending the rest of his life as a wine glass as the rest of the Golden Dawn furniture try not to despair).
After some drama with the Queen of Witches at the Lantern Festival which resulted in Vanessa being taken back home to the Forest of Witches, Finral returns back to Castle Vaude and takes over as the new heir, but quickly finds out he is unhappy in this life which had always been his dream. Finesse realizes this and encourages him to go follow his "new dream" and rescue Vanessa. Finesse herself then goes out into the woods to find Langris, but she is attacked by wolves.
Langris comes to her rescue but is seriously injured in the process. Finesse is shocked that Langris would do this, to which he replies that he would do anything for her. She asks why he went away and stepped aside for Finral in the first place, and he explains that he did it to make her happy, because he felt that he couldn't make her happy but Finral could. Finesse cries and insists that they could have been happy together, and with these expressions of their love for one another, Langris is magically healed, and the curse is broken restoring Langris, his parents, and the Golden Dawn back to their original human states. And they all live happily ever after! 💖

A/N: I couldn't decide so I'm going to give you three...
(1) While Langris for all intents and purposes expresses his love first, Finesse is the first to say the actual words, "I love you." She misinterprets Langris's shock and speechlessness as evidence that he doesn't return her affection and is struggling to let her down gently. When she begins to tell him that he doesn't have to say anything and they can just forget everything she said, Langris is just stunned. He asks, "Do you really...not know?" then chuckles lightly, incredulously mumbling, "And here I was so worried it was obvious..." Finesse is confused, but he looks into her eyes with such tenderness and says, "I've...always loved you."
That said, it is Langris (surprisingly enough) who initiates their first kiss. 💕
[A/N: I have a wip with a confession scene for this pairing written out actually, and I was very inspired by what I personally consider to be the greatest and most romantic love confession in the history of all literature. This ship just gives me those vibes].
(2) Since Langris didn’t really get to “propose” in the traditional sense (though I have no doubt that he did make sure she actually wanted to marry him), it is particularly important to him to give her a beautiful (and incredibly expensive) engagement ring. It is made of both gemstones from the House Vaude jewelry vault and also ones that Langris purchased himself with money he earned (kind of symbolising that though yes, this marriage is connected to his duties and responsibilities at House Vaude, sharing his life with her is something he is choosing and wants for himself).
In my mind, its main stone is a blue sapphire rather than a diamond (because they symbolism longevity and loyalty and I imagine those traits are incredibly important to Langris and really what he wants her to know that he is promising her when they do marry), but it has a diamond cushion as well (she is the King’s niece after all and even if she wasn’t, I can’t imagine Langris as anything other than the fiancé who is not going to spare any expense). It is a very elegant ring in my mind though not incredibly gaudy despite its size. Langris knows Finesse well-enough to know she doesn’t like to be the center of attention and would feel uncomfortable with a ring that could be seen from space. 😅 [A/N: It kind of looks like this in my mind]

(3) On more than one occasion Langris has personally tended to Finesse's garden when she was too ill to do so herself. She once wrote to him expressing her concerns that she hadn't been able to weed her garden recently due to illness, and the next thing she knew he was out there himself with his sleeves and the cuffs of his pants rolled up weeding and tending her beloved plants for her.
When they marry, Langris personally sees to it that Finesse's favorite plants are carefully moved to the gardens at House Vaude, and her part of the garden is their favorite place to have tea together or a picnic or to just spend the afternoon enjoying each other's company. They'll sometimes read out there as well, and eventually will play hide and seek with their children among the pretty flowers and plants. Langris also loves to bring Finesse her little bouquets of her favorite flowers from her garden when she is too ill to go outside or just as a fun surprise for her. It always means a lot to her. 🌸

Sweet Like Cherries
Tumblr media
Description: Finesse excitedly prepares to welcome a long-wished-for child amidst a frenzy over the impending birth of the future heir to House Vaude. Never one for the spotlight, she wishes that everyone would stop fussing over her and worrying so much--particularly her husband whose concern for her grows only stronger the longer she is on bedrest. It's a relief when she receives a surprise visit from her level-headed sister-in-law who offers her light-hearted and affectionate sympathies as the only other person who truly knows what it's like to be pregnant and fussed over by a concerned and protective Vaude boy 24/7! Vanessa admits, however, she'll never really understand what it's like to be married to Langris. Finesse is not sure she fully understands it herself yet, but she has never doubted how much he cherishes her.
Not all love is fanfare and fireworks. Some love is quiet and steadfast showing up in the smallest every day things--sweet like cherries.

Story Below the Cut. Thank you for reading!
“I didn’t know what to bring you…I thought about bringing the kids but that would really just be bringing you a headache,” said Vanessa with a wink and a laugh as she took a seat at Finesse’s bedside.
“I would’ve loved to see them,” Finesse answered with a slight smile. “It’s been so long. I bet they’re getting a lot taller.”
“Taller. Louder. Crazier…harder to corral,” Vanessa joked, then reached into her bag and pulled out some papers. “They sent these for you.”
Finesse smiled as she looked through the brightly colored drawings. “How sweet. They’re lovely.”  She stopped on a picture of several flowers, and Vanessa peered over at it.
“I think that’s your garden.”
Finesse sighed glancing over at the vase of wilting lilies on her bedside table. It was nice to have a bit of her garden with her, but she missed being able to visit it herself. It had been so long since she had been out in her garden—or out of the house.
Vanessa tilted her head almost knowingly and sighed. “How are you holding up?”
Finesse felt a blush rise in her cheeks. Vanessa’s intuition was always so strong—as if she was a mind-reader rather than just a string mage. “I’m alright,” she reassured her with a slight smile as she rubbed her hand across the curve of her stomach. “And so is the little one.”
“I’m glad to hear that,” said Vanessa with a smile. She tilted her head slightly. “I’m sure it’s not easy though. I’d go crazy cooped up in here if I were you. We’ve been wracking our brains trying to think of something to bring over for you, but the best I could think of was company. Are you sure there isn’t anything that you want?”
“That’s very sweet, but I don’t…” Finesse began to protest, but Vanessa cut her off.
“Maybe a food of some kind—something you don’t have in the house?” Vanessa paused and rolled her eyes with a chuckle. “What am I saying? I’m sure you have every food imaginable in this house.”
Finesse stifled a laugh covering her mouth with one hand while she pressed the other to her stomach. Based on the amount of movement, she thought the baby must be amused as well. The thought brought a smile to her face that reached her eyes.
“I bet he’s kicking you all the time now,” laughed Vanessa. Finesse nodded.
“Do you want to feel?” she asked almost sheepishly as she held out her hand to Vanessa. When Vanessa had been expecting, she had always been kind enough to let Finesse feel the movements of her niece and nephews. They were memories Finesse cherished fondly, and she was very happy to be able to return the favor.
Vanessa smiled. “Of course.” She leaned in closer as Finesse pressed her hand to the spot where she could feel the baby’s feet, and said, “Hi there, kiddo. It’s your Aunt Vanessa. I’m your cool aunt…well, actually, I’m your only aunt, but I’m the coolest. I might not be as great as an aunt as your mom is to my kids, but hey, when you get old enough I am going to teach you all kinds of cool stuff—like how make cocktails, do shots, recover from a hangover. I’ll teach you all about wine too—white, red, rosé, ”─the baby kicked─ “Oh, nice choice. You’ve got good taste. Just don’t tell your dad…he would have a heart attack,” she teased, and Finesse laughed aloud, unable to stifle it.  Vanessa looked up at her with a smile.
“What foods has the baby been wanting these days—well besides wine of course?”
“Um…well…” she blushed but shook her head. “Nothing in particular.”
“Oh,” said Vanessa narrowing her eyes. “Mine wanted all kinds of crazy stuff. Unfortunately,  none of them ever wanted cheese. It’s my favorite food, but I couldn’t stand the stuff when I was pregnant.”
Finesse patted her stomach considering herself lucky that the baby liked her favorite food, vegetable soup, well enough. She sighed. “Um…Vanessa? Can I ask you something?”
“Sure. Shoot,” she answered with a shrug and sat back in her chair.
“Um…when you say your kids wanted all kinds of crazy foods, were any of them ever…” she stopped. “If they weren’t your favorite, were they…someone else’s?
Vanessa narrowed her eyes. “Like whose? Like Finral’s?”  She shook her head with a shrug. “I don’t know. Maybe. His favorite food changes almost every day—he’s very indecisive. I’m sure you’ve noticed,” she added with a laugh. “Why? Are you really craving cherry tarts or something?”
Finesse’ cheeks felt hot, and she pressed her lips together staring down at her hands. “More like cherry anything…I’ve been dreaming about them…” she admitted sheepishly. Vanessa laughed loudly and brightly, and Finesse couldn’t help but laugh a little herself. Vanessa had that effect on people—she could make anyone feel at ease.
“Why didn’t you just say something?”
“I don’t know…I felt…embarrassed…and everyone is already so worried, I didn’t want to burden anyone by asking for something special. Besides, cherries are out of season.”
Vanessa smiled. “I’m sure Langris would travel all the way to the Heart Kingdom to get you cherries if you wanted them. They’re in season all year there. Plus, I think he’d be grateful to have something to do, and you’d probably get a little peace. I’m sure he’s driving you nuts with all that nervous energy.”
“No, not at all,” Finesse shook her head. “He’s been very attentive…but he hasn’t been sleeping…” She sighed pressing a hand to the curve in her belly. “I’m worried.”
Vanessa patted Finesse’ hand reassuringly. “Don’t worry. Men are just like that--especially these two. I’m pretty sure Finral always slept less than me when I was pregnant—which is saying a lot since our kids are basically nocturnal and always moved around like crazy in the middle of the night. Not sure if that’s comforting or not…” she joked, then sighed. “I tried to be understanding with Finral—his mother died in childbirth so the whole experience was hard on him. I’m sure it’s a similar thing with Langris. Your health is delicate, and he has always been a nervous wreck over it—and with this happening so suddenly and you on bedrest and all, it makes sense he’d be worried.”
Finesse sighed. He always had been so worried about her and her health—making sure she was getting enough water and rest, checking to make sure the house wasn’t too drafty, and calling the doctor at the slightest hint of danger—it was the main reason he had given for not wanting to have children, completing ignoring the fact that producing an heir to the House of Vaude was the whole purpose of their arranged marriage in the first place. Though Langris had always cherished and loved her, he always kept her at a safe distance, afraid of what a pregnancy and childbirth would do her already frail constitution. Meanwhile, she watched as her brother and sister-in-law welcomed three children. She loved hearing the alabaster walls and marble halls filled with children’s laughter when her niece and nephews would come to visit and longed for children of her own. However, she was always too shy to press the issue too far with her husband, who, insisted he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if something happened to her because she was carrying his child. Needless to say, her pregnancy hadn’t been planned—probably something that just added to Langris’ stress. “I know. That’s why I didn’t tell him…I just didn’t want to add anything else to his plate right now. The cherries just aren’t that important.”
Vanessa’s violet eyes were so kind as she tilted her head. “Well, I don’t think he’d agree, but you don’t have to worry about him. I’ll get you some cherries.”
“Oh no, Vanessa, I couldn’t…” Finesse protested, but Vanessa’s smile just widened.
“It’s no trouble for me. We’ve got whole jars of preserved cherries down at the restaurant. If Charmy doesn’t have any back in the kitchen, I know I’ve got several at the bar—more than enough to spare.”
“Vanessa…” Finesse began to protest, but Vanessa cut her off laughing as the baby kicked and jabbed at her hand which was still pressed to Finesse’ abdomen.
“The baby’s excited! It’ll be his first gift from his Aunt Vanessa.”
“Well…thank you…so much!” exclaimed Finesse. She patted her bustling belly. “From both of us.”
Vanessa laughed and teased with a wink, “You’re lucky your sister is a bartender.”
Finesse smiled but sniffled. She blinked her watering eyes rapidly not knowing what had come over her all of a sudden.
“Oh!” exclaimed Vanessa. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” sniffled Finesse. “I’m sorry…”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m sure it’s just the baby—not your fault,” Vanessa reassured with a kind smile. “But if you want to talk about it…”
Finesse blushed but feeling a bit bold she said, “It’s just…you said you were my sister…do you really feel that way?”
“Um…yeah,” Vanessa admitted with a shrug and a kind smile. “You’re family.”
Finesse wiped her eyes. “I always wanted a sister, and I think of you as one. But um…I just wasn’t sure…” she paused. “When you and Finral got married, I was…worried…” her voice began to trail off and her cheeks turned pink, but Vanessa patted her hand reassuringly. “I’m just so relieved that you don’t hate me.”
“Hate you?” repeated Vanessa incredulously. “Are you crazy? You’re the nicest person ever. Nobody in their right mind could hate you. Besides,” she teased. “Langris would kill them.” Finesse laughed lightly which turned into a slight cough before she continued.
“It’s just…after everything…I thought you would resent me,” she sighed with flushing cheeks. “We weren’t together very long, and of course, it didn’t work out between us but…if you loved him when we were engaged…”
“I didn’t,” answered Vanessa. “Not then--not like this. I wasn’t like Langris. That boy pined after you for years but stepped aside so you could marry his brother. Even though things didn’t shake out that way, if someone was going to resent you, it would be him, but he loves you, so…” Vanessa shrugged, and Finesse’ face flushed. Even after all these years of marriage and a child on the way, to hear it said so forthrightly made her blush a little. She saw Vanessa stifling an affectionate laugh which faded into a compassionate smile. “If anything, I should thank you. I mean, you’ve spent enough time in this place to know how awful it must have been for them to grow up here—how they must have suffered—Finral and Langris both. You were the one good thing in Finral’s entire miserable childhood, the first person who ever encouraged him and genuinely cared about him—and he loved you for it. I could never resent that.” Vanessa squeezed her hand, and Finesse sighed with relief.
“Also, I know you’re the one that broke things off with him so I guess I owe you one,” teased Vanessa with a wink. She laughed. “To tell you the truth, I’m really just glad you have no hard feelings against me. I mean, you ended up married to Langris.”
Finesse stifled an affectionate laugh behind her hand. “He’s really very sweet actually…” she said as her cheeks turned a bit rose.
“Alright…I’ll take your word for it,” Vanessa chuckled and winked at her. “But I’m not sure it’s worth living here in House Vaude—is it? I mean the Lord and Lady must be driving you crazy—what with you carrying the future heir and all.”
Finesse shook her head. “Langris tries to keep them away from me--tells them I need my rest. Liliane was in here yesterday, but just to pick out some things for the nursery and to ask me about you.”
“About me? Why?”
“I think having the Princess of the Forest of Witches as a daughter-in-law gives them some bragging rights among the aristocracy,” she answered thoughtfully. “More than just having the king’s grand-niece as one.”
“Great…so I’m their trophy now? I married the son they disowned--does that never come up?” Vanessa huffed and rolled her eyes. “I can’t stand these people.”
Finesse stifled a laugh at her honesty but admitted, “They’re…definitely difficult to like sometimes...”
“You’re giving them too much credit,” Vanessa huffed with a shake of her head. “Given where they grew up, it’s amazing Finral and Langris turned out as well as they did,” she sighed. “I mean they’ve both got their issues, sure, but it could’ve been way worse. House Vaude is a mess…I can’t believe they were fighting over which one of them got to run the place at one point.”
“Well, I suppose it’s not their fault they were born into it,” sighed Finesse sympathetically. “We can’t choose family.”
“I guess that’s true, but we married into this shitshow so what does that say about us?” Vanessa teased with an exasperated sigh, and Finesse laughed breathily. “Don’t tell Langris I cursed in front of your kid…” she joked giving Finesse’ stomach an affectionate pat. Then she sighed thoughtfully. “I guess, it’s not entirely fair to throw you in there with me since you didn’t have much of a choice in the matter—with the arranged marriage and all.”
“That’s not entirely true,” she admitted shaking her head. While, yes, she had been caught in the middle of years of drama at House Vaude due to a betrothal arranged by her grand uncle, the king, and Lord and Lady Vaude, in the end…
“Hmm?” Vanessa hummed.
“Well, it’s just… Langris offered to break off the engagement,” answered Finesse her cheeks feeling suddenly warm. “After he was reinstated as the heir, I mean. He said, he didn’t want me to feel like him and his brother were passing me back and forth like some sort of toy. He told me he only wanted me to marry him if I wanted to. That’s when I asked about why he had stepped down as the heir in the first place—stepped aside for his brother—and he told me it was for me…because he thought he couldn’t make me happy but Finral could.” She blushed still genuinely moved after all these years. “He said he gave it up because he wanted me to be happy.”
“He really is such a tsun isn’t he?” laughed Vanessa. Finesse chuckled as the baby’s feet fluttered in her belly. “I think the little one agrees,” she added patting Finesse’ stomach. “He knows him so well already.”
Finesse chuckled breathily. “He always kicks when he hears Langris’s voice. I mentioned this to him so now he’s taken to reading aloud to him sometimes—though mostly just whatever he’s working on so a lot of reports.”
Vanessa raised her eyebrows. “You sure you don’t have hard feelings?”
“None at all,” said Finesse with a smile. “I think things worked out for the best in the end. I know you don’t believe in fate all that much, but I like to think it was meant to be this way. Even if it took us a long time to get here, I like to think that we’re all happy.” She returned Vanessa’s wide smile before rubbing her hand across her stomach, “And I’m very happy that this little one will have a wonderful aunt and uncle and lots of older cousins to play with.”
“And a younger one,” said Vanessa as she smoothed the skirt of her dress and pressed her hand to the slight curve in her abdomen it had been hiding. Finesse gasped.
“What? Really?”
Vanessa shrugged. “Yeah. Number 4—total surprise, and I’ve started to get huge already...” she sighed as she framed the small but definite bump with her hands. “Don’t ask me how far along I am…I might cry,” she joked.
“That’s wonderful news! I’m so happy for you.”
“I know it doesn’t look like it but it’s still early. We haven’t really told anyone yet. We didn’t want to take any attention away from you. Not sure that we could what with you carrying the future heir of the Noble House of Vaude and all…no pressure though,” teased Vanessa.
Finesse gently stroked the curve of her belly. “I have a feeling it’s a boy, but it could always be a girl. I would be happy either way, and Langris says he’ll be happy as long as both the baby and I are healthy and safe.”
“I bet the Lord and Lady would be particularly agitated to hear that. If you have a girl, they’ll probably start hounding you about trying again. I’d be worried that would kill Langris though…” Vanessa teased.
“Oh, he said we are never doing this again,” chuckled Finesse lightly. “If we have a girl, we’re just going to leave the House to one of your sons.”
“Let’s hope that the Lord and Lady won’t still be around by the time he’d have to take it over...” Vanessa crossed her fingers. “Nothing personal, but I hope you’re right about having a boy—especially since this is a one-shot deal,” she teased.
Finesse smiled but sighed. “I wouldn’t mind… having more than one…” she admitted quietly as a blush rose in her cheeks. “But I don’t think my body could handle it…” her voice trailed.
“Or Langris’ psyche…” joked Vanessa trying to lighten the mood, but her face softened as she reached out to place a comforting hand over Finesse’. “I’m sorry. I know that must be hard for you.”
“That’s okay. I’m just glad we’re having this one,” she said with a soft smile as she patted her stomach. Her smile widened. “Though you’re very blessed to have so many.”
Vanessa laughed. “I can’t imagine my life without them...but it is pretty chaotic sometimes,” she joked affectionately. “You know, you can always borrow some of mine for awhile if you want to know what it feels like to have a big family.” She winked before resting a hand on her middle with a sigh. “4 kids is a lot…”
“4? I thought you had 3?” questioned Langris appearing in the doorway: a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a stack of files in the other. Finesse smiled and pressed a hand to the place where the baby started kicking excitedly at the sound of his voice. “You’re not honestly thinking about adding another one are you?”
Vanessa shrugged. “Too late.” She smiled and patted her stomach, “Surprise.”
Langris sighed and shook his head. “My dumb brother…I am going to smack him…”
“Pretty sure this one’s on me…” admitted Vanessa rubbing her hand across the slight curve in her belly.
“Oh…gross…” huffed Langris rolling his eyes. Vanessa laughed as Finesse stifled a chuckle that turned into a cough.
Langris turned towards her with a start. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she reassured with a smile. “Just laughing too hard. I’m so glad Vanessa came to visit.”
“Well as long as it’s not too much for you,” said Langris—his demeanor softening as he took a seat. “The doctor says you need to rest and shouldn’t push yourself too hard. If you’re too tired, just tell her and she’ll leave.”
“I’m okay. Really. Please don’t worry,” said Finesse reaching out to pat Langris’ hand reassuringly. A blush filled his cheeks.
“You tsun,” teased Vanessa affectionately ruffling a hand through his hair. Langris wriggled out of the way though his blush deepened.
“Stop that,” he huffed as he patted down his hair trying and failing to fix it from the unkempt mess Vanessa’s playfulness had turned it into. Finesse covered her mouth with her hand and tried not to laugh.
“You’re no fun, Langris,” teased Vanessa draping an arm around him. “And goodness are you uptight!” She gave his shoulder a friendly squeeze. “You carry stress in your shoulders just like Finral. You need to relax…” Langris squirmed away from her with a huff.
“Get off of me,” he snapped, red in the face as he tried to regain composure. Finesse smiled—she had always found this awkward side of Langris somewhat endearing. “Just because my brother doesn’t worry about you…”
“Oh no, he does. He worries about you and Finesse too. He’s been losing sleep over this…” She gestured towards Finesse who stared down at her hands.
“He has?” she asked guiltily.
Just then, as if on cue, a sparkling portal appeared in the wall and Finral stuck his head through.
“Hey, is everything okay?” he asked.
“Hello, Finral. It’s good to see you,” said Finesse with a smile.
Langris huffed at him. “What are you doing here? This is not a party.”
“Well, when Vanessa didn’t come home, I started to get worried that something was wrong.”
Vanessa sighed gesturing to Finral. “See…” she said proving her point, but she smiled reassuringly. “But he’s fine. Don’t worry.”
“Worry? What do we have to worry about?” he repeated visibly agitated. He turned towards Finesse. “Is everything really okay with you and the baby?” he asked. Finesse nodded, and Vanessa sighed.
“Yes, Finral, everything is fine. Don’t worry.”
“What about you?” he asked turning his attention to her.
“I’m fine too,” she said, and Finral sighed in relief.
“Ah, I’m glad. And the baby?” he stopped abruptly—seemingly remembering that Finesse and Langris were there. He gasped and covered his mouth with his hands. “Oh! Oh sorry, I…” he looked from them to Vanessa before smiling almost sheepishly. “Well…we’re um…”
“They already know….” Vanessa interrupted, and Finral tilted his head.
“Huh? You told them without me?” He almost pouted before Langris lightly smacked the back of the head. “Ow!”
“That didn’t hurt, moron,” huffed Langris. “Now get out. She needs rest. All this excitement is bad for her and the baby.”
“Lady Finesse or Vanessa?” asked Finral earnestly, and Langris threw up his hands.
“Both of them!”
As the brothers continued their concerned bickering, Vanessa sighed and rolled her eyes, turning towards Finesse with a teasing smile, “Let’s run away together. Leave these dummies to calm down.” Finesse laughed as Vanessa added quietly, “You know now might be a good time to mention those cherries. It might help if they had something to do…”
“Oh…um…well, okay…” Finesse whispered unsurely, but Vanessa winked at her.
“Hey boys!” Finral and Langris stopped their heated discussion to turn to look at her. “Finesse was telling me earlier that she’d really like some cherries.”
“Cherries? I can get cherries,” answered Langris immediately.
“Well…I can I help. I can get cherries too,” added Finral.
“I am perfectly capable of getting cherries for my wife, Finral. You have your own wife and kids, why don’t you get them cherries?”
“Yeah. Yeah. Right. Okay,” he answered nodding. “Vanessa, do you want…?”
“No,” she cut him off. “But you’re going to have to go with Langris. They’re out of season here so you’re going to have to go to the Heart Kingdom to get them. Go get ready to leave. I’ll be right there to stay with the kids. Keep the portal open for me,” she said giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Right, yeah. Langris, I will be back to get you,” he called before disappearing. Langris waved a hand almost dismissively at his brother as he focused his attention on Finesse.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay if I go to Heart Kingdom? With Finral’s portals, it shouldn’t take too long.”
“You really don’t have to do this…” she insisted placing her hand over his.
“No, I want to,” he said gently with a kind smile that reached his eyes. “I will be right back.” With a gentle smile, he tenderly pushed a piece of hair out of her face and kissed her forehead. Finesse felt the blush rising in her cheeks even after all of these years as their child fluttered excitedly inside her—like butterflies in her stomach. He really was very sweet, she thought.
“Aww…” sighed Vanessa affectionately. Abruptly, Langris pulled away from Finesse and bristled—his face turning a deep red as if he had completely forgotten their sister-in-law was there.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” he asked in the stiff voice he only used when he was embarrassed.
Vanessa shrugged. “Wouldn’t you rather me stay here until you’re ready to leave? I can take these…” she said reaching for the flowers Langris still had in his hands. “Go put your files away.”
“Right,” agreed Langris picking up the stack of files he had sat down on the side of the bed when he had come in. He gave them a curt nod before disappearing through the doorway.
“You didn’t have to embarrass him like that…” sighed Finesse though she smiled slightly.
“I know, but I only do it out of love and because it’s so easy,” Vanessa teased. “He’s very cute.”
“He’s very fond of you too—more than he lets on,” said Finesse as Vanessa replaced the wilted flowers with the bouquet Langris had brought with him. Finesse smiled–lilies from her garden, her favorite.
She sighed. “Are you sure it’s fair to ask him to go all the way to the Heart Kingdom just to get cherries?”
“I told you he’d do it, in a heartbeat, if you asked,” Vanessa said with a wink, and Finesse blushed.
“But why didn’t you tell them about the ones at the restaurant?”
“Why do you think?” she laughed. “With any luck, their little adventure will help them get out some of that nervous energy.” Vanessa shook her head rolling her eyes, but she smiled with an affectionate sigh. “Those dummies…”
She stood up and gathered her things but turned to pat Finesse’ stomach one last time. “See you later, kiddo.” She gave Finesse a quick, one-armed hug. “I’ll try to come back to visit soon. Maybe bring the kids next time…”
“I’d like that,” said Finesse with a smile. “Tell them I miss them and send them my love.”
Vanessa smiled, but before she could respond, she was interrupted by Finral sticking his head through the portal again.
“Vanessa, do you know where I left that map of the Heart Kingdom?” he asked somewhat frazzled.
“I didn’t know we had a map of the Heart Kingdom...” Vanessa sighed. “Hold on, I’ll be right there and help you look.”
“Okay, if you could hurry…that would be great. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this open…,” he chuckled awkwardly.
“Okay just a few more minutes.”
Finral fidgeted a little but sighed. “Okay, but I’m running out of mana reserves, and I still have to take Langris to the Heart Kingdom.”
“Hold on.” In a swift motion, Vanessa turned and threw her arms around his neck kissing him full on the mouth. Finesse gasped and covered her mouth with both hands in surprise and embarrassment, but before she could look away it was over. Finral blinked rapidly—dazed and confused like Vanessa had hit him on the back of the head. Vanessa, however, seemed unfazed. “Better?” she asked.
Finral managed a nod as he tried to catch his breath. “Ye…Yeah…” he choked. “Take as much time as you need…” Vanessa smiled and ran an affectionate hand through his hair before he disappeared through the portal again—red in the face.
“Sorry,” Vanessa turned towards Finesse whose face flushed in embarrassment. “I’m not sure how Langris is, but Finral’s mana reserves are tied to his mood. He just needed a little boost to get them to and from the Heart Kingdom--he’ll be fine. But still…I probably shouldn’t have kissed him like that in front of you…or anybody…”
“You kissed my dumb brother in my house?” huffed Langris exasperatedly, appearing in the doorway. “Ew…”
“Just be glad you didn’t have to see it,” joked Vanessa with a wink.
“Shouldn’t you be going?” he asked.
“Yeah, why don’t you just come with me? You can take off for the Heart Kingdom from our house—save Finral another trip over here. He’s depleting his mana reserves already with all these portals. I wouldn’t want you to get stranded.”
Langris sighed and conceded. “Alright.” He turned to Finesse. “Please take care of yourself while I’m gone, and if you need anything, contact me with a magic item or ask Vanessa or the servants or somebody for help.”
“I will be fine. Please don’t worry about me,” said Finesse, who feeling a bit bold, pressed her palm to Langris’ cheek. She took his hand and pressed it to her stomach where the baby was kicking and smiled. “We’ll be waiting for you when you come back.”
There was such a gentleness to his face when he gazed down at their hands, and he met her eyes and smiled at her with such tenderness, her heart could have melted. They weren’t a particularly affectionate couple--both rather shy about their feelings and neither of them touchy-feely like Vanessa especially not in front of other people. They were never going to be the type for grand romantic gestures, but it was moments like these—the subtle, everyday things, like a tender smile, a kiss on a forehead, a bouquet of her favorite flowers, or a trip to the Heart Kingdom to get the cherries she wanted—that showed how much they cherished each other. Finesse stroked Langris’ face with her hand. Then, she leaned in and kissed his cheek gently. “For luck,” she said quietly as Langris’s face turned bright red.
“Ah what do you know, they really are alike after all,” joked Vanessa. She winked at Finesse who blushed—knowing Vanessa must’ve picked up on a slight change in Langris’ mana.
“Come on. Let’s go,” said Langris trying to sound curt though he was blushing furiously as he turned towards the portal. He said farewell and then stepped through the portal followed by Vanessa, who turned back to wave at Finesse with a wink.
“Hang in there! Soon you’re going to have every cherry in the Heart Kingdom.”
Finesse laughed. Surely, they wouldn’t bring back all the cherries…right?

I swore I wasn't going to ever post this one but have to decided to say "to heck with it" and put it up anyway. 😂 I have nothing to say for myself and apologize to Langris, Vanessa, Finral, and Finesse (whose situation I have just made all the more complicated than it already was in the canon 😅)...
Description: "Did you just kiss me out of spite?" Never in a million years would Langris have ever believed there was anything in the world that could have possibly led him to a moment in which that drunk witch would be saying those words to him. But somewhere between too many drinks making him honest and revelations from Finral regarding his relationship with Finesse drudging up something he had long kept buried, Langris lost his grip on his tightly guarded emotions and began to live the impossible. And Vanessa was not going to let him off so easy for it.
OR There are a lot of very good reasons that Langris Vaude doesn't drink. This is the story of one of them.
Rating: T (For Language (including some crude insults), Drunkenness, and Descriptive Depiction of Kissing)
Warnings: Unhealthy Coping, Excessive Drinking, Drunkenness, Jealousy, Unhealthy Relationships, Language (including some crude insults), and Poor Decision Making
Fandom: Black Clover
Genre: Unrequited Love, Jealousy, Drunken Confessions, French Kissing, Friendship/Love, Angst and Hurt/Comfort, Strained Friendships, Unexpected Friendships and Eventually Friendship Bonding and Hurt/Comfort. Definitely Canon-Divergent--AU.

Characters: Langris Vaude, Vanessa Enoteca, and Finral Roulacase (Finesse Calmreich is mentioned)

This story was inspired by something @delirious-donna said in a response to an ask of mine once about whether or not there's a universe where Vanessa had kissed both Finral and Langris. This is what I came up with for such a universe, and it wouldn't leave me alone until it was written.
Thank you for indulging me and reading!
Story below the cut:
“I’m sorry…you’ve what ?” hissed Langris through his teeth—his fingers beginning to shake as they curled around his nearly empty glass. He had lost track of how many drinks this was, but it was more than enough to make him feel woozy and agitated. Probably why his emotions were currently getting the best of him.
Finral blushed a beet-red and stared at his twisting, fidgeting hands. He swallowed hard before taking a long swig of the clear liquid swirling around in his glass. “Well…um…look…it’s really not that big of a deal…”
“Not a big deal?” Langris interjected, more forcefully than he had been intending.
“Boys. Boys. Calm down. You’re both pretty,” Vanessa teased—drunk and giggly—in what was clearly an attempt to defuse the tension. It didn’t work.
“When did this happen? Where was your chaperone?” he demanded—realising only after he had asked that he didn’t really want to know the answers to these questions.
Finral spluttered—his cheeks flaming, but he eventually stumbled, “We were outside—in her garden. The groundskeepers and servants were supposed to be keeping an eye on us, but they weren’t really watching. It wasn’t a long kiss. There wasn’t even any—” His brother stopped abruptly as he caught sight of Langris glaring daggers at him, positively infuriated and, due to copious amounts of alcohol, unable to even try to hide it.
He immediately pushed back from the bar—standing up to his full height and waving his finger in Finral’s face as his words slurred, “You…you rake! You cad! You… manwhore !”
“Hey!” interjected Vanessa pushing him back—causing him to teeter just a little in his drunken stupor and to remember exactly why he hated drinking. “That was uncalled for.”
With a mortified expression, Finral fidgeted, but he sighed, rubbing his temples in confusion. “I don’t understand, Langris. She’s my fiancée, and I just kissed her. You were engaged to her a lot longer than me—didn’t you ever…?”
“No,” Langris cut him off with a stern glare, though a blush rose quickly and infuriatingly in his cheeks. He scowled. “Unlike you, I actually have self-control.”
“For goodness sakes, Langris,” laughed Vanessa sloshing around her wine glass before refilling it for the umpteenth time. “Don’t be such a prude. So he kissed her—from all accounts chastely —it’s not the end of the world. It’s not Finral’s fault that you didn’t kiss Finesse when you had the chance.”
Langris’s face grew incredibly hot. He was sure it must be flaming red as he slammed his glass down on the bar counter and curled his shaking hands into fists. “That is not what this is about! I couldn’t care less about that.”
It was a bold-faced lie, and Langris was sure Vanessa knew it from the way she quirked her eyebrows at him. “They’re engaged to be married, Langris,” she said, pointedly meeting his eyes. “Of course they’re going to kiss. It’s really not a big deal.”
Despite being a blushy, flustered mess, Finral somehow managed, “Yeah, Langris. Really…it really wasn’t this big…”
“Oh really?” he spat—a fire rising in his chest as he cut his brother off. “Not a big deal, huh?” His legs began to shake as much as his hands which he unfurled and waved about in the flood of feelings he couldn’t even begin to stifle. His grip on his emotions was slipping farther and farther away, and his thoughts were quickly becoming an emotionally-charged, impulsive and intoxicated jumble. More concerning than that, however, was the fact he didn’t care in the slightest and just allowed them to spill into his movements, his expressions, his words… “Fine. I suppose if that’s true, you won’t mind if I do this—!”
Langris was sure he would’ve never performed the actions which followed if he hadn’t been completely and utterly drunk. He would have never leaned across the bar. Would have never flung his arms around Vanessa’s neck. Would  have never pulled her flush against him. And definitely would have never pressed his trembling lips against hers. Even looking back on it, he could never be sure what exactly had been going through his head at the moment. It was entirely possible that for once in his life, it was completely and totally empty .
Only when he felt her startle and stiffen in shock and confusion, did his mind fill with realisation and panic, and he immediately felt overwhelmingly guilty and embarrassed. He pulled away from her—red-faced and ready to apologise, but she merely laughed at him with something sparkling in her eyes—disbelief? Amusement, perhaps?
“Did you just kiss me out of spite?”
Wondering if he had ever been quite so embarrassed, Langris descended into strange, indistinguishable flustered splutters and almost completely forgot to turn to look at the expression of utter horror on his brother’s face. After several deep breaths that did very little to calm him down, Langris bristled and a frown spread between his crimson cheeks. “Well…I…”
Rather than smack him, as he was sure he probably deserved for that indecent display, Vanessa snaked her arms around his neck. He could have sworn he saw her glance over at a bewildered Finral before she turned her attention back to him with a wink—her mouth twitching in amusement with a low, flirtatious, “That was a good try, baby. But you’re so stiff—it’s like kissing a brick wall.” Chuckling, she winked at him again and licked her lips. “Let me show you how it’s done.”
Langris swallowed hard as she tangled a hand in his hair and stroked his cheek with the other. Her gaze was focused, intense enough to make him shiver, before her eyes fluttered closed and she tilted his chin towards her—stopping a mere breath away from his lips. He supposed he deserved to be teased like this, after having kissed her like that, and he was about ready to pull away with a scowl on his face that he was sure must be blushing furiously, when she cupped his chin in her hand and whispered, “It’s about the anticipation.”
“Va…Vanessa…” Finral squeaked—his voice cracking like a lovesick schoolboy, in protest. Vanessa had such a soft spot for his brother—surely, she wouldn’t kiss him after that, Langris thought, even if she wanted to teach him a lesson. But he was wrong.
Her lips were soft as they first brushed against his, but they quickly turned frantic, coaxing and, dare he even admit it, fiery . He nearly yelped as she caught his bottom lip between her teeth and felt her tongue dart into his mouth as soon as he parted his lips enough for it to slip through. What the actual hell?
Though he hadn’t the slightest clue what was going on, or where this fire—this spite, perhaps—of hers was even coming from, he wasn’t about to let her have this power play, and he poked at her tongue with his own—eventually darting around it to her lips—a bit chapped and winey as he ran his tongue across them, causing her mouth to curve into a smile.
“You Vaude boys really have no idea what to do with your hands, do you?” she teased as she pulled away just enough to catch the warm breath that brushed up against his skin. Langris frowned, following her gaze to his hands which were frozen—like rigid and awkward claws in front of his chest. He might be drunk and clueless about what was going on, but he wasn’t about to admit she was right. “You can put them in my hair if you want. Or around my neck.”
“That is enough!” insisted Finral who was probably even redder than Langris was, which was saying a lot. “I am never going to unsee that! Alright, Langris, you were right. It was a big deal, and I’m sorry.”
Despite his complete and utter embarrassment, Langris couldn’t help but feel a bit smug about seeing his brother admit defeat and grovel like this. Vanessa, however, seemed intent on adding insult to injury and continued, “That was good though. I especially liked what you did with your tongue.” She winked at him, and Langris’s stomach coiled as his cheeks burned. What in the world was wrong with this woman? He knew she was touchy feely but goodness! Was she in the habit of kissing men she barely knew in this way?
Wait… The thought gave him pause and though his mind was clouded, something began to click in it. “Have you kissed my brother too?”
With a hum, Vanessa’s mouth twitched into a teasing smile, “Yes. Want to know who was better?”
Langris cleared his throat—blushing furiously. That hadn’t been his intention in asking.
“It’s not a competition!” Finral stammered, clearly flustered in drunken ramblings. “And besides, that was my first kiss. I’ve gotten a lot better at kissing since then so it wouldn’t really be a fair comparison.”
“My hair got caught on your earring. I’m going to say Langris wins just for that,” teased Vanessa, and Finral frowned. “Though if you’d like to try again, be my guest…”
Flushing, Finral shivered and spluttered before declaring in a shaking voice, “I am…I am in a relationship! Lady…Lady Finesse is the only…the only one…! I’m not going to kiss anyone that isn’t her anymore!” He nodded though his face swiftly grew splotchy with flushes of pinks and beet red. “O…Okay?” he asked, and Langris couldn’t help but wonder if he was trying to convince himself more than him and Vanessa. Langris scowled. He knew Finral had issues with commitment, but this was just ridiculous.
It seemed Vanessa also thought so, as she huffed—rolling her eyes before finishing another glass of wine. “Fine,” she replied through her teeth as she poured a shot of something clear and swirling for herself and downed it as well. Something in her expression made Langris’s stomach twist.
“Goo—good! That’s settled then.” Finral swallowed hard. “Let’s just agree to never talk about this again, okay?”
Vanessa nodded, and Langris, in his mortification, wasn’t about to argue. Finral rubbed his head. “I think I need to lie down. I’m gonna be so hungover tomorrow…” He stumbled over to one of the long, leather benches in the restaurant’s waiting area, and it wasn’t long before his groggy, disgruntled mumblings about being “scarred for life” drifted into steady, deep breathing and quiet snores.
Vanessa poured herself another shot—before returning to wine which seemed to be her liquor of choice, if Langris had to venture a guess. He, however, decided to cut himself off before he did something else he’d no doubt regret as soon as he was sober again. He swallowed hard. “Look,  Vanessa…”
“Don’t worry about it,” she cut him off with a wave of her wine glass. “It’s fine. Besides, you’re a good kisser.” She winked at him. “Though I suppose Finral’s right in that it isn’t fair to compare you since that was his first—”  She paused, Langris presumed, noticing the bright flush of red that filled his cheeks as he fidgeted uncomfortably. He didn’t say anything, but clearly he didn’t have to. “Oh… shit… ” She sunk down in her seat and shook her head, setting her wine aside in favour of something stronger.
Langris pursed his lips and swallowed hard. He supposed there was a cruel sort of irony to it—the way he always played second fiddle to his brother in this regard. The universe seemed intent on forcing them to share things—particularly in matters of the heart. “Not my plan, believe me...” he mumbled, but whether it was in response to himself or Vanessa, he wasn’t entirely sure.
“That was bold for a first kiss,” she chuckled. “But I guess jealousy and alcohol will make you do that…” Her voice trailed before she sighed and shrugged her shoulders with a sympathetic smile. “If I had known, I would’ve never…”
“It’s fine,” Langris interrupted. “It’s my fault anyway.” He swallowed hard—her words suddenly registering through the haze of alcohol. “And I’m not jeal—” As she crossed her arms and tilted her head pointedly at him, however, he stopped. Shaking his head, he decided it was best not to try to argue with her, and instead he merely sighed and ruffled his hand through his hair before changing the subject, his curiosity getting the better of him. “So you were my brother’s first kiss, huh? Was he yours?”
Vanessa nodded, and Langris could’ve sworn there was a bit of an uncharacteristic tint of pink in her cheeks. “It didn’t mean anything. We were young, dumb, and drunk. It was sloppy and a mess and…”
“It’s stupid,” Langris cut her off abruptly with slurring words, and Vanessa’s brow furrowed.
“Huh?”
“That you’re jealous.”
Vanessa snorted a laugh under her breath as she reached for her wine. “Who said I was jealous?”
Langris blinked at her. “I may be plastered and inexperienced, but even I know you’re not really supposed to be kissed with such vitriol.”
“Well I’m sorry it wasn’t fun for you, but you’re the one who kissed me out of spite,” she bantered as she crossed her arms.
“That’s not…well…that is…uh…” Langris stumbled over his words before he glanced over in Finral’s general direction to make sure his brother was, in fact, fast asleep. Still, Langris lowered his voice, just to be safe. “Look, I didn’t just kiss you because you happened to be here. My brother’s always been a little bit in love with you. If you wanted him, you could have him…in an instant.” Langris scoffed with a somewhat bitter shake of his head. “He’d probably thank you.”
“You have such a dismal view of Finral. He’s engaged to Finesse. They’re happy.”
Something twisted in Langris’s chest. “You don’t think I know that?” he snapped, more loudly than he intended. Finral stirred on the bench where he had passed out but quickly sunk back into his deep sleep as Langris took a few breaths to regain enough composure to speak quietly again. “Look…I know—I know that better than anyone. But you’re not like me. If you really do love my brother, that’s something he could actually return . But I…Finesse could never—“ Langris stopped abruptly, something panging in the ache in his chest.  He swallowed hard, and his eyes and throat burned. “Sorry…I didn’t…didn’t mean to…” he began to stumble, but before he could finish, Vanessa poured a drink and slid it across the bar counter for him.
“It’s okay…” Her face softened with something kind, empathetic, perhaps even a little sorrowful as she met his eyes and patted his hand with a sympathetic, bittersweet smile. “I won’t tell if you won’t.”

Description: Though Finesse has longed dreamed of going to the opera, Langris' invitation to accompany him there catches her entirely off guard. She is sure his reasons for inviting her are not so personal as a fulfillment of her wish--he probably just enjoys opera and wants some company, feeling obligated to bring her since they had been promised in marriage to one another. But a tender, private moment in their dimly lit opera box leaves her questioning if there is, perhaps, a little bit more to it than that...

Story Below the Cut
The view from their opera box was positively spectacular though Finesse still peered through her opera glasses from time to time in order to get a closer look at the facial expressions of the performers, always big and exaggerated to add to the excitement and entertainment. The acoustics, however, were probably the most impressive—every note, every breath was so loud it was almost as if she was right in the middle of the stage. The noise even drowned out the quiet snores of their chaperone, the dowager marquess from the House of Papillon, who had fallen asleep in the dark seclusion towards the middle of the first scene.
Langris had had the forethought to gently take the dowager’s opera glasses from her drooping hands before she dropped them in her sleep and caused a loud clatter which would surely draw attention in addition to being dreadfully rude. Per usual, it seemed he had thought of everything—which only made sense, Finesse supposed, seeing as attending the opera had been his idea in the first place. Couples in a betrothal situation such as theirs were expected to attend certain obligatory social functions from time to time—balls, dinner parties, weddings, christenings, those types of things—but it was incredibly rare that they would go out for leisurely activities together on their own accord so it had been quite the surprise when he asked her if she would like to accompany him there.
She had so wanted to see an opera—craving the experience of live music—and wondered if he had known about her wish. Despite being a bit aloof and standoffish at times, Langris had proven to her time and time again that he was actually a deeply thoughtful person who might do such a thing, though Finesse herself would never presume his motivations were so personal in nature in this or any other case. To her knowledge, he enjoyed the opera on his own accord and was merely being generous with his invitation.
She glanced over at him and wondered what he was thinking and if he was enjoying the performance. However, his expression was serious, intent, and unreadable, and she once again contented herself to simply never knowing what was actually going through his head. Instead, she turned her attentions back to the opera—losing herself in the music. She watched the story unfold on the stage with an almost awestruck wonder—a bright smile tugging at her lips throughout the rest of the scene.
Halfway through the scene which followed, probably her favourite so far if only for its gorgeous arias, she could almost feel Langris glancing over at her. In confusion, she turned, meeting his gaze in the dark of the opera house.
“Is everything alright?” she whispered leaning close enough for him to hear her, and she could have almost sworn there was a blush in his cheeks as he nodded back at her in reply.
“Fine. Are you alright?” he whispered back with a gentle concern. “If you’re tired and want to leave—?”
“No,” Finesse cut him off, placing her hand on his arm. She pulled it back almost immediately. “I mean…I’m alright, and I would like to see how it ends.”
Langris smiled slightly—though it was mostly obscured by the lack of lighting. “I’m glad you’re enjoying it.” He glanced backward towards the sleeping dowager marquess. “At least more than Lady Papillon.”
Finesse stifled a light chuckle behind her hand. “It’s wonderful,” she replied in hushed tones. “Only…I wish I knew what they were saying.”
With a slight tilt of her head, she smiled and shrugged her shoulders, and Langris nodded understandingly before turning his attention back to the stage. She watched as he swallowed hard before whispering, “He is trying to woo her, but… she’s afraid…”
Finesse’s brow furrowed. “Of him?”
Langris paused, taking a deep breath, but he shook his head. He wouldn’t turn towards her as he answered so quietly she almost didn’t hear him, “Of her feelings.”
Finesse inhaled sharply in surprise. She tilted her head inquisitively at Langris, but he was staring off towards the stage with an expression she couldn’t even begin to place. His face was flushed, and she didn’t expect him to say anything more when he continued, “She’s saying… ‘I am frightened…of my joy…’”
There was something in his tone that made Finesse shiver, and she was thankful that the opera house was so dark that he wouldn’t notice the tint of pink she could feel rising in her warm cheeks.
“Love and…desire and…doubt…”—he swallowed hard and took a long, trembling breath—“are battling in her heart…”
The dim light from the stage barely illuminated the red that filled his cheeks as his voice trailed and she almost instinctively reached out her hand and took his—unexpectedly calloused for a nobleman but perhaps unexpectedly soft for a magic knight vice captain. She could feel Langris tense and almost pulled her hand away, but his long, spindly fingers curled around hers as he turned to look at her.
Finesse’s heart pounded. Despite having been promised in marriage to one another for years now, she had never been so close to him—merely a breath away. She could barely see the look on his face in the dark and couldn’t even begin to comprehend it. In the background, the music reached it’s crescendo. She didn’t need Langris’ translation to know that the fateful heroine had given in and allowed herself to be wooed—had opened her heart despite her fear.
“Langris…I…” she began to whisper as she tilted her chin towards him, hovering in front of his mouth—why exactly…she hadn’t the slightest idea and could only pause, almost frozen in that moment he began to lean towards her. The sound of applause echoed, but Finesse barely heard it.
The dowager marquess did, however, startling awake and clapping her own hands together with a yawn. Extremely red-faced, Langris and Finesse swiftly scrambled away from each other before their chaperone could notice their incredibly close and, no doubt, improprietous proximity to one another.
Langris bristled—running a hand through his hair and clearing his throat. “I apologize…” he began, but she cut him off with a shake of her head.
“It’s alright. I—”
“What was that you said?” asked the dowager marquess, much too loudly for the current situation. Langris flushed—glancing around, presumably, to see if anyone had heard her impolitely loud outburst.
“I have your opera glasses,” he replied quietly, handing their chaperone the glasses he had taken from her earlier when she had first fallen asleep. Lady Papillon thanked him before leaning back in her seat and beginning to nod off again. A particularly red Langris sighed and turned his attention back to the opera, and Finesse felt the grip on her hand loosen. Despite her embarrassment, however, she gave his hand a squeeze—hoping it would encourage him to hold hers for a little longer. His fingers tense before they shyly but tenderly intertwined with hers, and she thought back to his words, merely a translation but with so much emotion behind them: “‘I am frightened of my joy…’”
A smile tugged at her lips. Maybe, he didn’t have to be.

More Romance Writing Practice
I was asked to write about Langris/Finesse, and I am super excited, ngl, because I absolutely adore this dynamic (whether platonic or romantic)! 🥰 That said, I have only written about it in a romantic sense once, however, and was reaching a bit of a writer’s block with my requested story so I decided to put that one pause for a bit and play around with the pairing in another piece to get more comfortable with writing it. I might delete this later, but the result is below the cut for now... 😅
Thanks for reading and for any feedback you'd like to provide. 💖
Word Count: 1158. Rated G. Warnings: Arranged Marriage (If that's a warning?); however, they are only engaged here.
Langris had had the forethought to gently take the dowager's opera glasses from her drooping hands before she dropped them in her sleep and caused a loud clatter which would surely draw unwanted attention, in addition to being dreadfully rude.
Despite being a bit aloof and standoffish at times, Langris had proven to her time and time again that he was actually a deeply thoughtful person who might do such a thing, though she would never presume his motivations were so personal in nature in this or any other case.
“Fine. Are you alright?" he whispered back with a gentle concern. "If you’re tired and want to leave—?”
She watched as he swallowed hard before whispering, “He is trying to woo her, but…she’s afraid…”
His face was flushed, and she didn’t expect him to say anything more when he continued, “She’s saying… 'I am frightened of my joy…’”
There was something in his tone that made Finesse shiver, and she was thankful that the opera house was so dark that he wouldn’t notice the tint of pink she could feel rising in her warm cheeks.
“Love and…desire and…doubt…”—he swallowed hard—“are battling in her heart…”
The dim light from the stage barely illuminated the red that filled his cheeks as his voice trailed and she reached out a trembling hand to him. When he turned to look at her, Finesse’s heart pounded. Despite having been having been promised in marriage to one another for years now, she had never been so close to him—merely a breath away. She could barely see the look on his face in the dark and couldn’t even begin to comprehend it. In the background, the music reached it’s crescendo. She didn’t need Langris’ translation to know that the fateful heroine had given in and allowed herself to be wooed—had opened her heart despite her fear.
“Langris…I…” she began to whisper as she tilted her chin towards him, hovering in front of his mouth—why exactly, she hadn’t the slightest idea and could only pause, almost frozen in that moment he began to lean towards her.
“What was it that you said?” asked the dowager marquess, much too loudly for the current situation.
A particularly red Langris sighed and turned his attention back to the opera, and Finesse felt his grip on her hand loosen. Despite her embarrassment, however, she gave his hand a squeeze—hoping it would encourage him to hold hers for a little longer. His fingers tense before they shyly but tenderly intertwined with hers, and she thought back to his words, merely a translation but with so much emotion behind them: “‘I am frightened by my joy…’”
A smile tugged at her lips. Maybe, he didn’t have to be.

Hi Greta! 💕
For your ask game what about🥤🎲🍄?
Thank you for the ask Lola!! 💕
🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
I wanted to recommend a Klance fic for you- this is one I read recently and really enjoyed! It’s a really well written modern AU that has tons of twists and turns. It kept me on the edge of my seat! 💙 ❤️
🎲 ⇢ what stops you from writing more in your free time?
I’m just SO BUSY. I’m in my first year of college and I’m studying film production which uses all of my creative energy. Also I’m taking too many credits (according to my mom loll) and have a job. I rarely feel motivated to create in the free time I do have simply because I need to use that time to relax and process everything changing so quickly. It’s been a crazy transition for me! Luckily this summer will be much less hectic and I’m taking a lighter class load in the fall, so I’m hoping I can put more energy towards writing in the near future!
🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
Hmmm…
I’m going to have to go with Finesse and Langris for this one. I have a headcanon that Finral stops trying to return to house Vaude and Langris and Finesse are engaged again, but she initially refuses to marry Langris and he has to earn her love.
I love this because Finesse is a character who is constantly robbed of agency. It must be so frustrating to always be passed back and forth between these two guys without any say in the matter, but she always chooses to be kind and understanding. I want her to chose the opposite for once!
It satisfies Langris’s arc as well because his fundamental problem is he doesn’t understand love that isn't transactional; he doesn't understand that the way to be loved is just to be kind and care about others. I want him to learn that lesson for Finesse and be patient with her even when she isn’t being her most perfect self.

Asta x Noelle Silva
A Family Where There Once Was None-- In the future, the Black Bulls gather together at the beach with their families causing Asta to reflect on his life's journey and the family he found along the way. Rated G.
Broken Angel (AO3) -- Noelle Silva was used to being told what she couldn’t do. As a magicless child born inexplicably to the Royal House of Silva, her family had taken great care to hide her and her lack of mana from the rest of the world. However, despite being told over and over again that she would never amount to anything more than her family’s shameful secret, Noelle never gave up her dream to become a magic knight. When she joins the Black Bulls and meets Asta, an orphan from Hage who dreams of being the Wizard King despite his mana-draining magic having left him a social outcast, she begins to develop a new dream: a dream to fight by his side and to protect him just as he has always rushed to her defense and always watched over her like a guardian angel. But all dreams come at a price… Rated T for action sequences and thematic elements.
First Christmas -- This year the Black Bulls are going all out for the holidays because it's their nephew's first Christmas! Charlotte may still be getting used to her chaotic new family, but she and Yami agree that it's very sweet the new "aunts and uncles" are going out of their way to make the holiday season truly special for their son. (Charlotte/Yami, Charmy/Rill, Vanessa/Finral, Asta/Noelle, and Gauche/Grey). Rated G.
Happy Accidents (AO3) -- The Black Bulls adopt a "Squad Baby" (in the best scenario I could come up with)! Black Bulls Family Fluff (Vanessa's familial relationships with Noelle, Luck, Charmy, Asta & especially Yami are the major focus. Secre is important in the end & Finral is trying his best, bless his heart) Minor ships since Noelle is so fun to tease & Asta loves babies (Noelle/Asta) and it's unbelievably actually their kid (Vanessa/Finral).  Rated T for some language & thematic elements.
Finral Roulacase x Finesse Calmreich
I’ll Be Waiting (AO3) -- Finral shouldn't have been surprised--he had known it all along that it would be Langris who would one day be the heir to House Vaude. He had expected it, but that didn't mean it hurt any less. He had no choice now but to leave home. There was no place for him here. He knew he should just slip out quietly without drawing too much attention to himself, but there was one other person he wanted to say goodbye to...even though she was now officially engaged to his brother. Or a take on why Finral apologizes to Lady Finesse for “making her wait again.” Rated G
Treasures -- When Finesse falls ill, Finral wants to send her a gift to show her that he's thinking of her and wishing her well. Of course, this is easier said than done... Rated G
Mentioned In:
Portals and Potatoes -- The Black Bulls' potato pie eating contest is well underway, and Finral is trying his best to figure out how to make his pile of potato pies disappear. Luckily, some surprise guests arrive just in time to help him out with that... [Fluff and time travel shenanigans for (even more) self-indulgent kicks and giggles]. Rated G (Future Problems Series Story #3).
Spite -- "Did you just kiss me out of spite?" Never in a million years would Langris have ever believed there was anything in the world that could have possibly led him to a moment in which that drunk witch would be saying those words to him. But somewhere between too many drinks making him honest and revelations from Finral regarding his relationship with Finesse drudging up something he had long kept buried, Langris lost his grip on his tightly guarded emotions and began to live the impossible. And Vanessa was not going to let him off so easy for it [OR There are a lot of very good reasons that Langris Vaude doesn't drink. This is the story of one of them]. Rated T for Language (including some crude insults), Drunkenness, and Descriptive Depiction of Kissing.
Wine Therapy (AO3) --  Backstory for how Langris and Vanessa became friends (post-series). Rated T for some language
Note: This pairing is also mentioned and briefly discussed as a past-relationship that didn’t work out in Pancakes for Dinner and Sweet Like Cherries
Finral Roulacase x Vanessa Enoteca
Let Them See -- While guests at the Heart Kingdom's royal wedding, Finral (drunkenly) takes a big step in his relationship with Vanessa. Rated T for drinking & descriptive kissing
Pancakes for Dinner -- Is it some “serious pining,” lingering heartbreak, or something else entirely that is preventing Finral from showing Charmy's delicious noms the proper attention they deserve? Charmy, Rill, & Vanessa are teaming up to find out! (Charmy/Rill pairing & maybe(?) Vanessa/Finral if you want to see it...) Rated G
Rated T for Language (including some crude insults), Drunkenness, and Descriptive Depiction of Kissing. [Note: relationship is one-sided].
Sweet Like Cherries -- Domestic and Family Fluff in a future where Finesse is married to Langris and Finral is married to Vanessa.  Rated T for one bad word but otherwise just fluffy
Thunderstorm (AO3) -- Time heals all wounds, but there are some scars that never completely disappear. In those difficult moments when her painful past comes back to haunt her, Vanessa finds solace and a renewed sense of purpose in the family she has built for herself. The storm is over now. Vanessa/Finral. Hurt/Comfort, Domestic Fluff, and Babies. Rated T for nightmares & trauma.
We Make Our Own Destiny -- Finral Roulacase wanted a soulmate tattoo more than anyone…until the day it appeared and said his own name, however. Confused and heartbroken by the fact that supposedly even the universe couldn’t find someone to love him, he tries to resign himself to the bitter truth that he will be alone forever, but Vanessa isn’t about to let him throw his life away moping.
Gauche Adlai x Grey
First Christmas -- This year the Black Bulls are going all out for the holidays because it's their nephew's first Christmas! Charlotte may still be getting used to her chaotic new family, but she and Yami agree that it's very sweet the new "aunts and uncles" are going out of their way to make the holiday season truly special for their son. (Charlotte/Yami, Charmy/Rill, Vanessa/Finral, Asta/Noelle, and Gauche/Grey). Rated G.
Our Corner of the World -- When pre-wedding jitters and nervousness start to get the better of Grey, her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Marie, knows just what to do, and though it may be bad luck for the groom to meet with the bride before the wedding, Gauche is willing to take that risk if that's what it takes make sure that their wedding day is one of the happiest days of Grey's life.
Langris Vaude x Finesse Calmreich
A Night at the Opera -- Though Finesse has longed dreamed of going to the opera, Langris' invitation to accompany him there catches her entirely off guard. Rated G
[Note: relationship is one-sided on Langris’ side].
Sweet Like Cherries -- Domestic and Family Fluff in a future where Finesse is married to Langris and Finral is married to Vanessa. Rated T for one bad word but otherwise just fluffy.
[Briefly] Mentioned In:
Pancakes for Dinner
Portals and Potatoes (Future Problems Series Story #3).
Note: Through A Rainy Window (AO3) focuses on Langris and Finesse’s  friendship, but it could be taken in a romantic way if the reader wanted to see it (They’re also engaged in that story, but it’s an arranged marriage so it doesn’t really have a romantic connotation)
Langris Vaude x Vanessa Enoteca (It's Complicated)
Nozel Silva x Vanessa Enoteca
A Birthday Surprise -- Nozel can't wait to surprise his daughters with their birthday presents, but little does he know that his wife, Vanessa, has a surprise for him as well.
Rill Boismortier x Charmy Pappitson
First Christmas -- This year the Black Bulls are going all out for the holidays because it's their nephew's first Christmas! Charlotte may still be getting used to her chaotic new family, but she and Yami agree that it's very sweet the new "aunts and uncles" are going out of their way to make the holiday season truly special for their son. (Charlotte/Yami, Charmy/Rill, Vanessa/Finral, Asta/Noelle, and Gauche/Grey). Rated G.
Special Sauce and Stork Paintings -- To Charmy, all meals are important, but this may be one of the most important meals of her life. Or it would be...if her husband Rill wasn't so oblivious and bad at guessing games that is...
Yami Sukehiro x Charlotte Roselei
First Christmas -- This year the Black Bulls are going all out for the holidays because it's their nephew's first Christmas! Charlotte may still be getting used to her chaotic new family, but she and Yami agree that it's very sweet the new "aunts and uncles" are going out of their way to make the holiday season truly special for their son. (Charlotte/Yami, Charmy/Rill, Vanessa/Finral, Asta/Noelle, and Gauche/Grey). Rated G.
Maybe My Soulmate Died -- From the time her supposed “soulmate tattoo” had inexplicably appeared on her wrist over a decade ago, Charlotte Roselei had never given it much attention–-until she began to wonder why the name etched into her skin was “Morgen Faust” rather than “Yami Sukehiro,” that is. Yami, himself, has always been a soulmate skeptic–-insisting he knows better than fate the kind of person he’d choose to share his life with, and though Charlotte isn’t sure what to believe, a late-night conversation with him leaves her wondering if, perhaps, she has been looking at her so-called “soulmate tattoo” in entirely the wrong way. Perhaps fate has other plans after all… (Yami/Charlotte) Rated T for some language.
