The practice of raking leaves, putting them in bags, and then having the local sanitation department haul them off to some landfill is both wasteful and counterproductive.
As leaves across America make their annual autumn pilgrimage from the treetops to the ground, lawn and wildlife experts say it's better to leave them around than to bag them. First, because it keeps leaves out of landfills. Every year, about 8 million tons of leaves end up there. And second, because leaves help the grass. Leaves are full of nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. "Those nutrients are being returned to the soil," Susan Barton, a professor and extension specialist in landscape horticulture at the University of Delaware, told NPR. "But probably even more important than that, it's the organic matter. It's the fact that you've got this tissue that then eventually decomposes and improves the soil health." They also provide a habitat for insects, spiders, slugs — and depending on where you live — possibly turtles, toads and small mammals, according to the University of Delaware's College of Agriculture & Natural Resources.
At most, just run a lawn mower (preferably a hand powered mower) over the leaves to cut them into small pieces. Then sweep away any leaf debris from sidewalks and driveway. Repeat if necessary.
If you have space, you can also collect and compost leaves to use as a mulch for plants next spring.
These are climate friendly ways of marking autumn.
Some cities actually collect leaves for composting at a central facility, where it turns to mulch that residents can collect for free. On the other hand, leaves in landfills that don't have enough oxygen to decompose will end up releasing a significant amount of methane. How people deal with leaves is just one part of a longer-term issue of environmental sustainability.

Butterflies: 195 ways to help California's painted ladies

Butterflies: 195 ways to help California's painted ladies
By documenting hundreds of new nectar plants for painted ladies, scientists have renewed hope these charismatic butterflies may prove resilient to climate change.
Every spring, swarms of the colorful butterflies can be spotted in Southern California as they make their way from western Mexico to the Pacific Northwest to breed. Some years, the number of migrating butterflies is in the millions.
Additionally, California is home to resident painted lady populations that require food sources year-round.
Though they are a major North American butterfly species, there is a lack of baseline data to quantify a decline in painted ladies. However, scientists believe they are being negatively affected by hotter, drier weather and habitat loss.
“The lack of rainfall in Southern California likely impacts the butterflies’ ability to move through the state, potentially decreasing nectar sources and causing them to die without reproducing,” said Jolene Saldivar, UC Riverside ecologist who led this effort to identify new painted lady nectar plants.
“There’s so much to be learned about these butterflies before drought and climate change damage them irreparably,” Saldivar said. This study, which identifies 195 new nectar plants for the species, is now published in the journal Environmental Entomology.
To obtain this result, the UCR team sorted through more than 10,000 images of painted ladies in California shrublands, supplied by community scientists through the iNaturalist website. Any images in which the butterflies did not have mouth parts extended and were not obviously feeding were omitted from analysis, as were any images of caterpillars.
advertisement
The newly discovered nectar sources may offer Southern California gardeners wanting to support the species a wide range of options.
“Much of what we identified could responsibly be planted during a drought,” said Erin Wilson-Rankin, study co-author and UCR associate professor of entomology.
Of the top 10 most frequently observed plant species, seven are native to California. These include yellow-flowered rubber rabbitbrush, blue wild hyacinth, common fiddleneck, Fremont’s pincushion, black sage, wild heliotrope and desert lavender, which belongs to the mint family.
These butterflies also readily feed on showy ornamental plants common to California landscaping, such as lantana, butterfly bush and rosemary, as well as flowering weeds.
“It’s an uber generalist insect, not picky at all,” Saldivar said.
advertisement
Painted lady caterpillars consume plants, but they are not known to eat any agriculturally important species, nor are they known spreaders of any illness. They serve as good sources of prey for insects, spiders, birds, wasps and reptiles, and mature butterflies can pollinate some of the many plants they visit.
“It might be getting tougher for painted ladies in some places, but these butterflies will feed on what flowers are available — even a few plants in a window box could help them,” Wilson-Rankin said.
Saldivar says she believes the results of this paper may encourage community scientists, whose contributions to knowledge should be celebrated and promoted.
“Adding a photo and a little information to a community science website or through an app on your smartphone might seem minor, but in the big picture, it helps inform us about ecological processes we’d otherwise be very challenged to learn about,” Saldivar said.

11/10/2022-Lakeside and home
Photos I took in this set today are of; a lovely moon to see this morning, a nice scene of a mostly green tree with a bit of yellow, one with a lot of yellow autumnal colour and another with red autumn leaves visible from home from a nice angle getting all of them in it I get this angle when crossing the road and didn’t quite feel the shot when I first noticed it at the end of my lunch time walk yesterday and rather wondered what it might have been like if I had so luckily the conditions were pretty much identical in the bright sunlight with vast blue sky to take it, bee on dandelion, crimson flax, view at Lakeside, a carrot seed head which caught my eye last week at Lakeside, green leaves against the blue sky at Lakeside, broad-leaved clover at Lakeside, bright red rose hips against the bright blue sky at Lakeside with nice green leaves too and a nice sky tonight. Today was another fantastic festival of colour in fine and splendid weather for photos. I am finding it interesting to notice the angles of sunlight lately and the rich light you do get in autumn and seeing the landscape in shadows, a sign of the time of year. I enjoyed the berries a lot again today.
Key species encountered today:
Agrimony and carrot-Great flowers to see at Lakeside standing out in the now mowed grass of the eastern meadows.
A few its fair to say not highly esteemed by many flowers seen which are gems that come to prominence more as the flower year quietens down at this time of year and there is a sense that they are dependable-Daisy, dandelion, some fresh red deadnettle one I do really like and broad-leaved clover.
Large White butterfly-It would be a shame if I didn’t see a butterfly as I did with dragonflies yesterday on these bright sunny days at a time of year where your next could be your last of the year a delightful Large White flitted by for me at Lakeside.
Avian pine delight-Immersed into this small but precious habitat, the pines at the south east of Lakeside by the road entrance a dominant part of the landscape around here especially as the other trees’ leaves desert them which I had rarely explored like I did on my lunch time walk today smelling and feeling it, looking underneath at the pine cones on it and generally taking it in, I saw some great birds. Yet more noisy Long-tailed Tits I’ve seen so many here this year, a Blue Tit in there too and Robin I saw Blue Tit well elsewhere at Lakeside today too and for only the second time at Lakeside for me after once last spring an exuberant Nuthatch which it was great to see on a branch and it was chased off by a Long-tailed Tit I believe too.
Kestrel seen at the start of the walk by the far eastern entrance by the allotments and one of my favourite birds the Green Woodpecker heard in trees right beside me-Two key species today.
Today I also saw; Starling and Goldfinch well at home, Feral Pigeon, I seem to recall Magpie, crane fly, jumping spider at home, crimson flax, orange poppy and cornflower with yarrow adorning the flower bed on the way to Lakeside, ragwort, possible Russian vine or Japanese knotweed, teasel seed heads seen well again, possible lambs quarters an interesting plant across the road from home looking nice in the sun and a smashing set of bright yellow evening primroses on the way to Lakeside near to a unique tree I like seeing where I had a great moment with an evening primrose over the summer I have had a good year for seeing them.

From the gallery-
When a tree falls in a forest, we may see it as the death of the tree. It stops photosynthesizing, growing, feeding its mycorrhizal symbionts, flowering, developing fruit, dispersing seeds, taking in carbon dioxide, and producing oxygen. But in the ecosystem, it begins a whole new life in decay. It feeds the soil and microbes through the decomposition of its tissues; it provides a place for fungi, mosses, and lichens to grow; and it becomes a protected habitat for a myriad of insects, mammals, and birds. This same tree, therefore, can be both dying and living at the same time, depending on perspective. It can be dead if considered separate from its surroundings, or it can be alive in its continued relationship within its ecosystem.
Humans can feel more alive by being integrated with the rest of the natural world. We are not living to our full potential, or allowing nature to be its full potential, when we consider ourselves as separate from it.
If we are to have hope for solving the complex environmental issues that are facing us today, we need to work with, rather than against, the forces of nature.

House Washing Ipswich - Why Pressure Washing Is Not the Answer
Tumblr media
Dirty surfaces compromise curb appeal and harm the quality of your home. Mildew and spore-bearing bacteria create those dark stains that not only look unsightly, but can crack siding or damage windows and landscaping.
Save money on a costly siding replacement and protect your family’s health with a soft washing service that kills allergenic bacteria and fungi on contact. To know more about House Washing Ipswich, visit the A Clean House Washing website or call 0419778863.
The Brookwater area’s weather creates an ideal habitat for spore-bearing bacteria, which results in those dark streaks you see on siding. They not only diminish curb appeal, but they can cause your exterior to deteriorate over time. It’s important to take action, but pressure washing is not the answer. This method uses force to “clean” away build-up, but it can crack siding, damage windows and doors, and destroy landscaping.
Using the proper techniques, our soft wash system removes stains safely and effectively. We use a 3-step cleaning process that loosens and breaks down dirt, mould, mildew, algae and moss. Then, we rinse and scrub the affected areas with high-quality brushes to clean the surface.
Our professional cleaning service will leave your home looking two to three shades brighter, instantly improving curb appeal. We also kill mould, mildew, and other organic growths to protect your family’s health, ensuring a safe living environment. Plus, our house washing eliminates cobwebs and other organic growths that harbour bugs and rodents.
With the weather fluctuating from scorching summers to mild wet winters, roof tiles are particularly susceptible to dirt accumulation and moss growth. If left unattended, moss can lead to roof damage. Many homeowners lack the equipment and inclination to carry out roof cleaning Ipswich themselves, which is why hiring a professional is often the best option.
The use of a low pressure washing system complete with sanitation chemicals means that unwanted pests are bleached and killed. The soft washing method poses no risk of erosion and allows the chemicals to penetrate more deeply.
Once the roof tiles have been cleaned they can be sealed to provide further protection and to prevent damp penetration. A Smartseal registered contractor can apply a water resistant roof sealer to the tiles without altering their appearance. This will help reduce energy bills and prevent heat loss. It will also prevent algae, moss and mildew from returning. This preventative maintenance can save you the cost of a roof replacement in the future.
When dirt, mildew, algae, moss, spider webs, and other organic material build up on the siding of your home and on the roof, it does not only detract from your property’s curb appeal, but also eats into the building materials. Our highly specialised house soft washing and roof cleaning Ipswich services remove harmful contaminants that can cause long-term damage. Call us today for a free quote. Our team is always ready to help. Washing concrete driveways, buildings, walls and fences. To know more about House Washing Ipswich, visit the A Clean House Washing website or call 0419778863.
When you have a high pressure cleaning done on your house, roof or gutters it is also a good idea to get your driveway cleaned as well. This will make your home look clean and fresh and may even raise the value of your property. It is also easy for professional cleaners to take care of this as it is part of their job. They can do this as a one-off service or on a monthly basis.

The Intriguing Aesthetics: The Aglaonema Night Sparkle boasts a striking appearance that sets it apart from its botanical counterparts. Its dark green foliage is adorned with mesmerizing silver speckles, resembling a starry night sky. Each leaf tells a unique story, with patterns reminiscent of celestial constellations, casting a spell of elegance and mystery wherever it resides. Whether showcased as a centerpiece or nestled among fellow green companions, this plant effortlessly adds a touch of sophistication to any indoor space.
Caring for the Night Sparkle: While the Aglaonema Night Sparkle exudes an aura of otherworldly charm, its care requirements remain delightfully down-to-earth. Here are some essential tips to ensure its flourishing presence in your home:
Light: Optimal lighting conditions for the Night Sparkle include bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct exposure to harsh sun rays, as this can scorch its delicate leaves. In low-light environments, the plant adapts admirably, but growth may slow down.
Watering: Like many tropical plants, the Aglaonema Night Sparkle prefers consistently moist soil. Allow the top inch of the soil to dry out before watering, ensuring proper drainage to prevent root rot. During the growing season, typically spring and summer, increase watering frequency, and reduce it during the dormant winter months.
Humidity: Hailing from humid forest habitats, the Night Sparkle thrives in environments with moderate to high humidity levels. To mimic its natural habitat, consider placing a pebble tray filled with water beneath the plant or utilizing a humidifier.
Temperature: Maintaining temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) suits the Night Sparkle's preferences. Avoid exposing it to sudden temperature fluctuations or drafts, which can stress the plant.
Fertilization: Feed your Aglaonema Night Sparkle with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every four to six weeks during the growing season. Refrain from fertilizing during the dormant period.
Propagation and Maintenance: Propagation of the Aglaonema Night Sparkle is primarily achieved through stem cuttings, preferably taken during the spring or summer months. Ensure each cutting has at least one node and leaf, and place it in a moist potting mix until roots develop. Regular maintenance involves dusting the leaves with a damp cloth to remove accumulated debris and periodically inspecting for pests, such as spider mites or mealybugs.
Conclusion: In the realm of indoor gardening, the Aglaonema Night Sparkle reigns supreme as a celestial beauty, captivating enthusiasts with its celestial charm and ease of care. With proper attention and nurturing, this enigmatic gem from the forests of Southeast Asia will continue to illuminate homes and hearts, adding a touch of magic to every corner of the indoor jungle.

In a city like Pokhara, nestled in the serene landscape of Nepal, preserving the natural beauty and balance is crucial. Let's explore some eco-conscious strategies for Pest control Pokhara  and beyond.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Need for Eco-Friendly Pest Control
Pests can pose a significant threat to the health and vitality of our plants. From aphids and mealybugs to caterpillars and mites, these tiny intruders can quickly multiply and cause extensive damage if left unchecked. However, traditional Pest Control in Nepal methods often involve harsh chemicals that can harm beneficial insects, pollute the soil, and pose risks to human health. In a region as environmentally diverse as Pokhara, it's essential to adopt sustainable practices that protect both plants and the surrounding ecosystem.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
One of the cornerstones of the eco-friendly Pest Control Company in Kathmandu is Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This holistic approach emphasizes prevention, monitoring, and intervention strategies tailored to specific pests and plants. In Pokhara, where agriculture and horticulture flourish, implementing IPM techniques can help minimize pesticide use while maximizing plant health.
Cultural Practices
Start by maintaining healthy plants through proper cultivation practices. Ensure adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients to strengthen plant immunity. Regularly inspect plants for signs of pests and promptly remove any infested or diseased foliage. Additionally, practicing crop rotation and companion planting can disrupt pest life cycles and attract beneficial insects that prey on pests.
Natural Predators
Encourage natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, and predatory mites to establish populations in your garden. These beneficial insects act as natural Pest Control Service Provider in Nepal feeding on common garden pests like aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. By creating a welcoming habitat with diverse plant species and minimal pesticide use, you can attract and support these helpful allies.
Homemade Remedies
Explore homemade pest control remedies using common household ingredients like neem oil, garlic, chili peppers, and soap. These natural deterrents can effectively repel pests without harming plants, humans, or beneficial insects. For example, a simple mixture of neem oil and water can deter a wide range of pests while promoting plant growth and vitality.
Organic Products
When additional intervention is necessary, opt for organic pest control products approved for use in organic farming. These products are derived from natural sources and contain ingredients that are less harmful to the environment and non-target organisms. Look for products containing botanical oils, microbial insecticides, or insecticidal soaps, which offer effective pest control with minimal ecological impact.
Professional Assistance

Common species such as the redback spider, white-tailed spider, and huntsman spider are frequently encountered in homes and gardens. While most spiders are harmless, some can pose risks to humans, especially those with venomous bites. Reducing the spider population within living spaces is crucial for maintaining a sense of security and preventing potential health hazards.
Preventive Measures:
Sealing Entry Points: Begin by inspecting and sealing any cracks, gaps, or openings in windows, doors, and walls. Spiders often enter buildings through these small openings, and closing them off is an effective preventive measure.
Maintaining Cleanliness: Regular cleaning, both indoors and outdoors, is key to spider control adelaide. Spiders are attracted to clutter and debris, so keeping spaces clean and well-organized reduces their hiding spots and potential breeding grounds.
Outdoor Landscaping: Trim bushes, trees, and shrubs around your property, as overgrown vegetation can serve as a habitat for spiders. Additionally, keeping the outdoor area well-lit discourages spiders from nesting, as they prefer dark and secluded spots.
