being a little different is an absolutely insane way to talk about what Meursault was executed for
okay yes. he committed a murder. he absolutely did commit a murder. but it wasn't the crime of the murder that the court focused on; it was the kind of person he was. they didn't even expect his trial to be an interesting one, everyone was thinking about the patricide trial that would happen right after, but by the end of Meursault's trial they decided he was worse than someone who committed patricide.
why? because he didn't cry at his mother's funeral. because he started dating someone shortly after. because he didn't feel remorse. he is simply a person who is affected by physical sensations greatly and has almost no emotional ones, and the court spun a narrative that he must have been lacking a soul. look at him, he's barely made a single expression this entire time.
they didn't believe him when he told them that he didn't know why he shot multiple times, or that he did it because the sun was too bright (he probably got heat stroke), even though we see his inner monologue and know that that's the complete truth of it. it doesn't really matter, though. they point out a whole bunch how ridiculous and unfair it is that the court relentlessly focused on his character rather than the actual crime.
it was never about getting a dangerous criminal out of the way. if it was, they might have taken his numerous friends and colleagues' testimonies into consideration, about how good he was to all of them, and that he'd just gotten into a bad situation. no, they executed him because they didn't like the idea of someone who didn't cry at their mother's funeral. for his trial to be read as unjust and absurd is the intention.
also that was faster to say than to explain his whole deal

Quote
My dear, In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. I realized, through it all, that… In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.

"I told Marie all about the old man and she laughed. She was wearing a pair of my pajamas with the sleeves rolled up. When she laughed I wanted her again. A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn't mean anything but that I didn't think so. She looked sad. But as we were fixing lunch, and for no apparent reason, she laughed in such a way that I kissed her."

When Camus said "Pour que tous soit consommé, pour que je me sente moins seul, il me restait à souhaiter qu'il y ait beaucoup de spectateurs le jour de mon exécution et qu'ils m'accueillent avec des cris de haine" and Le Fanu said "There is no word as indifference in my apathetic nature" and Pamuk said "Uzun bir süre kimseyle konuşmadım; içime döndüm. Dünya ile arama uzaklık koydum. Dünya güzeldi, içim de güzel olsun istedim. İçimde bir suçluluk, hatta kötülük yokmuş gibi yaparsam, yavaş yavaş kötülüğü unuturdum."
Translations:
"For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate."— Albert Camus
"For a long time, I would have nothing to do with anyone. I withdrew, distancing myself from the world. The world was beautiful, and I wanted my inner world to be beautiful, too. If I ignored the guilt, the darkness inside me, I thought I would eventually forget it was there."— Orhan Pamuk

Meursault from Le Etanger for the headcanon meme
(ASK MEME) Oh boy oh boy time for the Funniest French Man!
Sexuality Headcanon: Bisexual with a preference for women. Though, bisexual not in a "I like more than one gender" way but more "I like whoever the fuck I'll like no matter what gender they are." Gender Headcanon: While I do see him as a cis man, I do honestly think that Meursault would genuinely be so uncaring about his own gender to the point that he'd just shrug when asked. Meaursault is Meursault. A ship I have with said character: Y'all I can't break up Meursault and Marie. I want Meursault and Marie to be happy in life, they're endgame. A BROTP I have with said character: Raymond may be a jerkass but I do appreciate his friendship with Meursault. It's genuinely sweet! Other than that, Meursault and Celeste ftw. The friendship between you and the owner of the small diner you frequent is unending, yo.
A NOTP I have with said character: Due to the short and simple cast of the novel, I can't say I have one.
A random headcanon: Honest to god if Meursault lived and had some time for soul-seeking, I am 100% sure that he'd basically be like Tarrou. A more colder Tarrou, but Tarrou nonetheless. Also, I do believe he'd get along well with the cast of La Peste/The Plague.
General Opinion over said character: Oh I LOVE Meursault. He's such an interesting figure and I enjoy how he lives his life with his simple joys. My boy can work a grill with that autism swag frfr /hj

hey it's that anon from the other day about meursault. I am also an autistic individual with low empathy and can therefore only partially sympathize with Meursault. I think that you've done a reading of The Stranger that is very sympathetic and that there is value in that, but I've always read The Stranger as both a story about the absurdity of connection and a story about a Frenchman in colonial Algiers who doesn't understand himself or his own biases. You mention heat stroke but I think it's worth considering: is Meursault's perception of events realiable? Could he be unconsciously struggling with his complicity in oppressive violence against a colonial subject?

You raise very good points. I will be considering this. It’s a bit late to change the wording on that og post though
