QUEER JOY

Sometimes I coast into this happy, glowing daze, and when I trace all these golden filaments around me to their source, I find my little shining harbor of queer love in media.

As a kid, I only knew queer stories run through with anguish and regret and shame. Reality echoed the same. The gnarled pain of AIDS lingered in everything, and I learned the term “gay panic” from headlines when it was used as a defense for murder.

I started reading the end of novels and watching the last scene of a movie or TV show. Generally, if the queer characters didn’t die, their happiness did.

When I was a teenager on the cusp of realizing my queerness, I craved stories about queer characters who not only got to live at the end of their stories, but queer characters who got to fall in love without punishment. Who got to the last page or the last scene and got to rest in bliss.

I watched shows like Queer as Folk in secret. I sought out any hint of queerness in shows around the world. I wrote queerness in fic where I wished it had been in canon.

When I watched Until We Meet Again in 2020, I couldn’t believe it was real. I devoured SOTUS after that, and Dark Blue Kiss, and Gameboys, and I Told Sunset About You. These queer stories where no one died. Where no one was punished by the narrative for being queer. Where no cruel, underlying message told the audience, “Only agony awaits the deviant queers—as it should.”

That’s why I never take this new era of queer media for granted. It’s what I always dreamed of having when I was young.

It’s queer joy.

And I’m grateful for it every day.

my kinda people are the people who don't misunderstand my arthit & his actions. The people who try to go deeper in understanding depths of his character & not judge him badly cause of the surface level things.

I always see people complaining about arthit's lack of pda thinking we live in perfect world where people are so accepting of all same sex couples. Do they really think life is bl drama where everyone is so accepting like In western society but this is asia! Here it's still a taboo. So it's normal for arthit to not want to do any pda but how do people not see that he won over his fears! It was arthit who announced they are dating to their friends. Even in sotus s it was arthit who announced to the whole company that he loves Kongpob, he overcame his fear of being judged, mocked, facing homophobia cause kongpob is more important than all those things. He can face the world and everything worse just for kongpob to be by his side. And how did people fail to notice arthit actually INITIATING pda in our sky so many times!

He is shy but he isn't less affectionate! He is action speak louder than words kinda guy but he does speak those important words when he knows he should.

It was just a simple post.

Just a photo of Arthit's hand holding his dear pink milk and of someone else's hand holding a chocolate and strawberry filled crepe.

He hadn't thought much about it when he posted it, not even that his friends didn't know yet that he was dating someone.

At least not until his cuddling time with his boyfriend was interrupted by his friends invading his dorm.

"It is a cute photo" Kongpob hums as he looks at the post Arthit made

"I know, it was Nam who taught me how to take the best pictures" Arthit mumbles into Kongpob's neck

"I still don't like you mentioning her" Kongpob sulks and Arthit looks amused at his younger boyfriend

"Stop being jealous, Pob" Arthit kisses his neck softly "She was just a past crush while you are my boyfriend who I love" he adds while hiding his blushing face since he was still shy about saying that he loves Kongpob even if they have already been together for almost a month(and pinning for each other since the first day they met when Arthit helped Kongpob choose to go to the engineering faculty)

Before Kongpob could say those words back to Arthit or kiss him, the door of Arthit's dorm is suddenly open.

"Arthit Rojnapat!" Tutah shouts as he enters before he freezes when he sees Arthit and Kongpob cuddling.

"Why did you stop in the middle of the way?! I almost fell to the ground" Bright whined

"N'Kongpob?" Tutah says in shock and the other three finally look to the bed

"Hello, Phis" Kongpob says amused as Arthit hides his face on his neck even more because of being embarrassed of his friends finding him cuddling their junior

"I'm pretty sure you two hated each other" is the only thing Prem says while still in shock

"P'Art doesn't hate me, he was just annoyed by my actions" Kongpob says grinning before Arthit punches him in the shoulder

"I told you not to call me that, only Kawii and P'Watee are allowed to do it" Arthit says glaring at Kongpob who nods while still smiling which didn't surprise Arthit one bit

"I feel like I lost like 20 chapters of this story" Knott mumbles as he sits in the ground while trying to still understand what he was seeing

"Oh, how is P'Watee? As he told you if he, P'Maetee and the others are or not in a romantic relationship?" Bright as as he hears the mention of Arthit's older brother

"Nope and I don't really care as long as he doesn't end up hurt" Arthit answers and Bright pouts since he really wanted to know what was going on between their brothers and their roommates

"Forget your brother!" Tutah says hitting Bright in the head "I want an explanation about the post and what we just saw!" he adds as he glares at the couple that were still cuddling

"Technically we are still seeing it since they are still cuddling" Prem comments but only ends getting a glare from Tutah

"I think the explanation is obvious, P'Tutah" Kongpob says "Me and P'Arthit are dating" he adds and kisses Arthit's head who blushes and glares at him

"Since when?" Knott asked "And why did we just find out now?"

"Almost a month" Arthit sighs "And I asked Pob to wait before we inform anyone since I wanted to enjoy our relationship without our friends asking us about everything about it"

"Oh...." Bright says because he and Tutah were a lot like that whenever one of the others admitted to have a crush or started a relationship

"It's okay, phis" Kongpob as he and Arthit sat in the bed, still cuddling, and made a gesture for the seniors to seat on the bed

"I'm sure that now you want to know how we got together" Arthit says and his friends smile at that because it meant that Arthit wasn't mad at them so they took a seat in the bed to hear the story

It was all because of a post that Tutah, Bright, Prem and Knott become the first ones to know about Arthit and Kongpob's relationship and got front seats to the reaction of their university when the couple finally revealed that they were dating.

Thinking about the Mock-Trailer for The Ex-Morning

Pathapi is said to be the Best Reporter of the Year in the beginning. How. I want to know his career accomplishments so badly? I need to know how he got here!

I’ve been considering why Pathapi acts the way he does in the beginning. Has he always been like, since his university days? Or was it perhaps heartbreak and the passage of time that’s made him more like this?

Aou is being made to play the exasperated best friend in Be My Favorite and the rival with coffee thrown on him in The Ex-Morning. Someone give both characters a raise. And a boyfriend!

I looooove the trope of the arrogant, whiny jerkass in a successful position who gets humbled. And that paired with him rebuilding his reputation with his ex-boyfriend of all people? I am so ready to see Pathapi’s character arc, and the things Tamtawan makes him do in this trailer makes me think he’ll get more in-tune with the spirit of good reporting and why it’s so important.

How does Tamtawan know and decide to come back? Obviously, he wants to help Pathapi and is still in love with him, but why did he leave? WHY DID HE LEAVE? Later in the trailer, when present-day Tamtawan leaves, it’s after he’s told “Tam. You have two options now.” What are the two options? The way Tamtawan leaves and the look on his face makes him look regretful, but what exactly is motivating him trying to leave here? Why did he leave in the first place? Does Pathapi know? His face looks half confused rather than just heartbroken!

What has Tamtawan been up to? I am intrigued.

The SOTUS reference in their university days flashback? I am obsessed. They were so sweet in that one frame, it makes me wonder how they fell in love. How different were they? How much of the same remains in them? How did they fall in love? Oh my god!

The transition from Pathapi being awkward with shirtless only-clothed-in-a-towel Tamtawan to taking his own shirt off and asking if Tamtawan has an ulterior motive to fluster him is hilarious to me. I love how forward Pathapi is here! And Tamtawan getting flustered is amazing. Oh my god, I love this trailer. It balances a comedic tone, angst, tension, etc all in one show. Can’t help but adore it.

“You’re still the same selfish jerk.” I need to know what happened! I said this above and I’m saying it again. I am intrigued.

Uni Tamtawan pulling Pathapi by his tie? I am obsessed.

The umbrella scene is both so very P’Lit and so very much a SOTUS reference, it delights me. I wonder how many SOTUS references we’ll have in the show proper.

I wonder if the car accident will coincide with the climax of the show.

That! Last! Scene! I suppose this is a scene when they’re hooking up but not properly together, seeing as they’re flirting, shirtless, and probably just had sex, but still won’t admit they still like each other. This sounds great to me.

I’ve mostly not talked about the meta elements here, because I feel it’s less about the contents of the actual trailer and more about the nature of the series as such a KristSingto RPF-type plot. Anyway, I love it. Everything about the meta of this series is perfect to me, and exactly what I wanted. This show is SO fun to think about when you know about the lore of KristSingto in real life. I’m half expecting Tamtawan to have hazed Pathapi at this point!

Side note that is not a side note: I LOVE THEIR ACTING! I love their characters!

Is this vers? I’m going to say it’s vers or Top Krist until proven wrong, because that last scene? Well. Let’s put the KristSingto into the KristSingto.

I love the small cast and the focus on KristSingto! I just need to say this. I am so excited for this comeback, in-part because it really is just Tamtawan and Pathapi’s story.

Tamtawan is supposed to mean “follow” and “sun” whereas Pathapi means earth/soil/ground. Coming off of KongArt, where Arthit is obviously “sun,” and KristSingto, who compare themselves to the sun and moon, this seems so definitely meaningful. Aof and Lit, I need to know what you’re cooking!

The coals scene is sooooo perfect, both for the characters AND KristSingto themselves. Again bringing it back to the meta of it all, but, oh my god? This is perfect? Aof wrote a screenplay that was KristSingto RPF? On that note, I keep thinking about the idea of KristSingto channeling their feelings from the irl work-partner “break up” and it makes me go a little crazy. Especially with Krist talking about all his efforts to bring Singto back, and how he over-thought it when Singto left. And even more so seeing as they say they’re basically playing themselves.

The lyrics of the song used in the trailer are so fitting, I am now looping it and thinking about Pathapi and Tamtawan forever and ever.

I noticed that Tamtawan goes by “Tam” but did I miss it for Pathapi in the trailer, or do we get no indication of his nickname? I’m curious.

The “Begin Again” for the new Peraya Party speaks to both KristSingto and their new characters, and this is again making me go, oh god it’s true they’re just playing themselves.

I said my ideal KristSingto BL was a vers exes-to-lovers that parallels reality. Evidently, I was not alone.

Is it just me, or do the Pathapi + animals and Pathapi + soil degradation water scenes feel a lot like certain episodes of Friendship with KristSingto? Just me? Maybe it’s just Krist. I love him so dearly.

So much is revealed in this trailer, but that somehow makes me more intrigued about what is not being revealed to us?

Krist still goes for the top lip and Singto still goes for the bottom lip when they kiss. This kills me every time. I am so excited to see lovey-dovey Tamtawan and Pathapi!

throwing my hat in the sotus pit but i really do love sotus and wanna defend it a bit. it has its issues, sure, but it’s a debut drama for ks and the first full-on bl from gmmtv so I forgive it for the growing pains and. well honestly i actually really love some of it and can’t get what i get from sotus in other shows.

i love arthit’s character (the way you learn he’s a totally different person from how you first perceive him, especially in sotus s, is really compelling to me. you’re really taken into kongpob’s pov in finding him out in sotus and while I see why this might not work if you weren’t endeared by him, i think that if you WERE endeared by arthit, it was incredibly fun and i found arthit an interesting character to think about). i love seeing their cute awkward little relationship (which, yeah, feels a bit awkward even after they get together, but they are sickeningly sweet still) and how the characters deal with the workforce and coming out in a professional setting after being out in university. most of our uni bls never get to show us what their working life will be like and seeing arthit struggle through it was really important to me. i actually really liked all the office stuff.

i think kongpob is really easily likable from the beginning and when kongart really settle as a pair, i really love the two of them together. i actually have a lot of thoughts on them and their our skyy ep was top tier imo. i think it’s so sweet how they got an incredibly fitting and heartfelt wrap-up to their story and it felt right for the characters (more than i can say for, say, our skyy petekao). i really love our skyy kongart. very in character and accurate to their characters, in my opinion.

i watched sotus in 2023, so it isn’t nostalgia. and it definitely feels dated in multiple aspects but, man. it’s a show i really really enjoyed despite that and i think it really is part of the best of what was out at the time (well, not that much WAS out then). i totally get why people dislike it but damn. i love my little hazers.

This is a wonderfully eloquent defense of SOTUS, hats off to you kind Anon.

I have to be honest - and this is not a secret - I am not the biggest fan of the show and even though I agree with some of your points, I just don't feel Krist's acting I'm afraid and I wasn't super into the story either. As for Singto on the other hand, SOTUS did manage to endear him to me a whole lot and I'm now ravenously following the rest of his career (how about that Shadow!?!).

So yeah, I get where you're coming from with this, I will defend Theory of Love to my death even though I cannot in good conscience say it is an excellent show and many parts of if I would change if I had the funds haha, but it resonated with me on a very personal level so I completely get the passion you're all displaying! Keep being into things wholeheartedly, that's the spice of life!!!

I was reading your meta posts on how you're watching older thai bls to get an understanding of where they come from and looking at the works you've seen and yet to see, it makes me really see that somehow i managed to be there for the start and kinda rise of thai bl dramas, where we used to get (1) bl a year, skip seeing a lot of the growing pains drama live and now am back to bls when they're doing some of their best works and also so much quantity in bls to choose from and also finally start getting gls???

Like when you're like oh how it must have been to watch these dramas in 2016, I'm like not 2016, but 2017, but I WAS THERE with regards to sotus and sotus s.

And gods was i OBSESSED WITH KONGART at the time. And i personally think that sotus wouldn't be as fondly remembered for me personally, if sotus s didn't exist. Because for me, i really liked sotus s more and it's still the part (along with the our skyy ep) I've rewatched more over the actual SOTUS drama. That's also probably because i love seeing more established relationship in dramas lol

And while i can't comment on krust acting because it HAS been quite a while since i last rewatched sotus or sotus s, I'd say with regards to arthit, i like him a lot better in sotus s than in sotus. Do with that what you will lol

And i think it's a large part of how it was my first thai bl and the nostalgia of it is part of why i still look back on it fondly despite all the problems i can see in it now, looking back. Same with petekao in dark blue kiss and love me again.

Like when i came back to watching bls in 2022 (after a lengthy break of not watching them 2019-22) you what blew my mind the most? Not the quality of bls because that, i realised, AFTER i watched the shows. But the SHEER QUANTITY of them.

Like if you told the me that was watching sotus that something as awesome as February of this year where i had quality ongoing bl dramas to watch from MONDAY TO SATURDAY I'd be like don't be delusional that wouldn't happen EVER.

Oh how i love to be proven wrong and i see I'm yet again going off on an unrelated tangent.

I think that's part why ppl who started watching bls with 2gether look back at it so fondly despite i personally finding it a good bl but not worth rewatching.

Because that 1st bl nostalgia is a heavy drug.

And i think part of WHY i fell so heavily into sotus is BECAUSE it borrowed from the ye olde yaoi tropes, which i personally, liked reading about at that time. Plus it was what dominated the stories in the yaoi manga at the time! So as a naive teen, it was what I'd like because i had NOTHING ELSE in the yaoi section. I also read shoujo manga at the time and let's just say it wasn't doing too much better lol

And speaking from the perspective from an asian, living in an asian country myself, I discovered the existence of queer people via these yaoi manga (my country was and still is pretty queerphobic and it didn't help i was brought up in a kind of smaller town. Small by my country standard, western ppl would probably be shocked at the population in our small cities lmao) and eventually leading to my eventual discovery of my own queerness, these manga are a large part of at least the younger gen who have read such stuff in my country being at least less queerphobic. But that's a rant for some other time.

I'll stop with that train of thought before I go off more than i already have in your ask lmao.

Oh my GOODNESS -- thank you SO, SO MUCH for sending this reflection my way! I so appreciate it!

As a kid of Asian immigrants in the States -- I SO appreciate hearing the thoughts of other Asians (and especially Asians in Asia!) watching these amazing shows that we love. And thank you for sharing your perspective in regards to your realizing your own queerness -- and how these dramas, and yaoi manga, helped you realize that and gave you artistic support. I think that's so incredibly important. Sending so many hugs to you -- art is amazing.

Regarding KongArt -- I am there with you. If it had been 2016, and I was a BL fan then, and I was LOOKING for a BL drama, I would have been ALL OVER that ship, and totally obsessed with it, because it was the first BL central/solo plot of a drama. (I likely would have also been far more obsessed with Phun and Noh in Love Sick, too, ha.)

My first ever-ever BL was 2019's What Did You Eat Yesterday/Kinou Nani Tabeta, and the ship of Shiro x Kenji will forever remain my favorite (not even withstanding that they're played by two of Japan's best actors of all time). I totally understand that the "1st bl nostagia is a heavy drug." Bad Buddy isn't my first Thai BL, but it was the first that truly wrapped me up in an analytical spiral, and I literally think about Bad Buddy and WDYEY on a daily basis. I love the feeling these shows give me by way of how smart and equitable they are.

Thanks so much for diving into my OGMMTVC project with me. I'm always taking recommendations. I may very well pick up SOTUS S and the SOTUS Our Skyy episodes, but only after I finish my main list -- I know that the fandom generally thinks those two pieces are better, but I still need a touch of a break from Krust, ha.

i was rambling about this as someone who has NOT watched sotus. i think kongart should cameo in dangerous romance our skyy like if we're not getting sotus 3 i think they should show up as sailoms engineering seniors (🙄) and then get married. i think this would be funny and also make sailom think a bit deeper on his relationship with kanghan and whether theyd take that step eventually too
