Here's the second part of the knuxadow medium-burn, exploring what would happen if Shadow had landed on Angel Island after the end of Sonic adventure 2.

Bandage, part two

Hours pass. Knuckles knows what he has to do, but he can't find the strength to stand and tend to the job.

It's disrespectful to leave him there any longer. As vicious as he had been, Shadow did not deserve to be left out in the open as carrion for wildlife. The thought makes him ill - yes, better to get up and take care of the body now before he finds pieces of it scattered about the area, picked apart and half-eaten.

Did he fall from space in one piece? Knuckles wonders, finally rising to his feet again. His way is illuminated by the fast-approaching sunset, lost in thought. He hadn't looked too long, partially because of the smoke blocking his vision, and partially because no one is keen on staring at mutilated remains. But Knuckles wants to bury him as whole as possible. It's what the Mobian deserves, despite everything.

Before he can go too far, however, his communicator goes off, startling him badly enough to yelp a bit.

Sonic is calling him. In all the morbidness of the afternoon, he'd forgotten about his friends.

"Sonic," he answers, willing his voice to stay steady, "judging by the lack of explosions, I'm assuming you fixed everything?"

"Ah, you know me," Sonic says, though his tone is lacking its usual gusto. Knuckles has a feeling he knows why. "Don't worry your big old head about it. The emeralds have scattered again, but you know how it is, we'll snatch 'em up again eventually. We touched down a little bit ago, so I figured I'd check in."

If he wasn't privy to such a big piece of the puzzle, Knuckles wouldn't have bothered to pry into what was wrong. His morals align with Sonic's enough to help him whenever the opportunity arises, but his primary focus is to protect the Master Emerald and Angel Island. Beyond that, he doesn't worry himself with the finer details, or try to dig into things that, frankly, aren't his business.

He stops walking once he catches sight of the initial crater Shadow made upon his impact with the island. The splatters of green blood have dried into a nasty brown.

"Everything doesn't sound fine," he finds himself saying anyway.

He must have taken Sonic off-guard, because he doesn't get a reply for several seconds. It gets to the point where he thinks he might've hung up on him, but then he speaks again. His voice is thick with emotion.

"Shadow is..." He doesn't need to say it, even if the echidna weren't staring at the evidence. But his next words surprise him. "He saved us. Helped me stop Eggman, but..."

Knuckles shifts his gaze to the communicator, eyes wide. Shadow helped them? At the last moment, he had changed sides?

"But what?" He knows. He doesn't need to push Sonic for the details, doesn't need to hurt the blue hedgehog like this when it clearly pains him to talk about, and yet he's desperate to understand what made it all end this way. "Sonic?"

"We went super together," Sonic says, lost in the memory of what had happened just that afternoon. "But I didn't...one minute he was right next to me, Knuckles. I could reach out and touch him. You should have seen us out there, working like a team - he would've been a great edition to the team... And then I looked away for a second, i-it was just a second -"

He falls quiet, but Knuckles doesn't need to be told the rest. Ultimate Lifeform or not, using the chaos emeralds to enter a super form is extremely hard on the body, and Shadow must have exerted too much energy to sustain it. Losing power, plus being too close to Earth's atmosphere...

Well, here he is, standing amongst the aftermath.

"...I'm sure he wouldn't hold it against you," Knuckles offers, almost too quiet to be picked up by his communicator. "You can't save them all."

"Knuckles he was right there!" Sonic snaps, uncharacteristically angry. He chooses not to take it personally, knows it's just a manifestation of grief. "I had him! I had his hand and I - and I -"

There's a thud over the line that indicates Sonic struck something, too overcome with emotion not to get it out in some way or another.

The echidna doesn't know what to say, in this moment. He's never been the most nurturing guy. Hell, he's barely got the facilities to have this conversation, knowing he has to go bury a body. He feels sick.

Would Sonic feel sick, too, if he told him he had Shadow? He doesn't want to upset his friend, or risk him spiraling if he comes and sees the state of the Mobian he couldn't save.

"I..." He begins, hesitant. "I'm sorry, Sonic. I know you did the best you could."

Sonic releases a shaky breath over the line. Knuckles gives him the space to think, the space to collect himself. When he replies, it carries a note of finality.

"My best wasn't good enough."

The signal cuts out. It's tempting to call back, to ask Sonic if he needs anything in this delicate moment, but he simply doesn't have the energy.

Knuckles sighs. He knows the hero will be okay eventually, and if he isn't, he has people to fall back on until he is. The echidna can only do so much in the realm of emotional support.

Steps heavy, he marches on.
