i posted this on twitter back in february but the zoom in shots for when sonic hooks a fish in frontiers & when big sees free froggy merch in the TSR overdrive short look so eerily similar that i feel like frontiers is referencing it. big /is/ in frontiers after all so the connection isn't unlikely

Not only do Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles appear, but Rouge, Omega, and Shadow also show up as well. Upon release, Tails kicks Sonic away, who yells 'Blast Away' and Sonic starts bouncing around the area at astounding speed, destroying all enemies in the area. The episode, which can be seen below, pits Team Dark versus Team Sonic. When performing this move, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles team up to deliver a knockout technique that destroys all nearby enemies and briefly enables the Light Speed Attack. When used, Knuckles grabs Tails by the feet who grabs Sonic by the feet, and he spins Sonic and Tails around, before releasing them. Charlie

Charlie is easily my favorite character from Pit Babe — leaps and bounds above all the others. Behind him is Jeff, then Alan, and then Babe in that order (Sonic is after that followed by Kim probably, but I digress).

Charlie is so far ahead of the others because he’s everything I look for in a character; complex, damaged, loyal, and determined.

Fanfic fodder the character.

However, I do understand why some people dislike him you’re wrong lol but I get it

I just want all my favorite damaged boys to meet each other lol like can you imagine if Jade (Middleman’s Love) and Charlie (Pit Babe) met each other. The level of puppy dog crack insanity? Or what if my boy Team (Between Us) met Akk (The Eclipse) in university and they went to a race where they ran into Charlie? Or what if as part of his scholarship/degree, Team had to volunteer at the garage? I bet he’d befriend Jeff before Charlie haha. Sadly, my boy Vegas just, uh, I don’t think he could play nice with the majority of these characters haha

Though! In an alt reality where Gun adopted Akk, Charlie, or Team could be interesting — they’d all be younger than Macau so I think Vegas’s protective instincts would be on overdrive

Something I've noticed that I find really cool about the animations Hesse directed is how he still makes unique model sheets for each animation he's a part of.

Sonic Dream Team That seems like a given, yeah, but I find this so cool 'cause of the simple fact that at the end of the day, these're all the same Sonic and pals being made by the same animation team. If they wanted to, Hesse very easily could've just made the one sets of Model Sheets and general art style for TSR, and reused them as a starting point for the following animations. More or less just like how Sega themselves have been using the same models and general CG style since the early 2010s for just about everything. I don't even think most of us would have an issue with that, 'cause the style of TSR Overdrive is genuinely sick as is. But, no, Hesse went out of his way to reinvent the model sheets and, by extension, the general art styles of the following animations as a whole. That extra effort goes a long way in making the following animations continuously feel fresh and stand on their own. I dig that sorta thing a lot.

Oh man 😂 Let's seeeee... Well, if we're talking officially released shorts, well, I'm gonna have to give a top three 🤣😜

I love the animated prologue of Sonic Frontiers with Knuckles, "Divergence." It's an excellent comeback to his character after the 2010s, beautifully animated, and overall so well done! 🤩❤️

I love the 10 minute animation of Team Sonic Racing Overdrive! It's so expressive, even without a single word being spoken by any of the characters. Plus, it's genuinely hilarious. 🤣 All the character dynamics are so clear, again without words. It has beautiful animation, too! 🤩

Then I REALLY love the SCU short "Sonic Drone Home," with our iconic trio of bros, Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic Wachowski! I mean, them basically being out on an errand for Mom, and instead of actually returning the library books, they *cough* greatly damage the "sacred tomes," let Tails adopt a drone, and pick up dinner on the way home. I love the Wachowski kids so much, so getting to see them in a slightly more relaxed situation than the movie was SOOOO fun. 🥰💙💛❤️

You have a unique style to drawing Sonic characters that I think is gorgeous. What would you cite as sources of inspiration for style or technique when it comes to how you approach them?

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!

I don’t know how exactly my style originally came about because it’s evolved a lot over time.

The earliest stuff I ever drew was Sailor Moon and Sonic and Balto and I think you can see hints of those influences in my early work. For example, all the characters had wayyyyyy too skinny and long limbs hahaha (thanks a lot Naoko Takeuchi!)

I started to try to draw like Yuji Uekawa for awhile as a kid because I loved that style, but it was unnatural for me so it didn’t last, but I do think it helped me break that crazy-long-limb stage of my art.

I’m currently obsessed with Max Sarin’s work. The expressions are just so gorgeous.

This next inspiration is one that I don’t feel influenced my style, but I do think it’s helped me with my overall understanding of Sonic character anatomy. I’ve always loved Tyson Hesse’s art even from his old Boxer Hockey days, and his Sonic art and animations are top notch. I’ve watched the 2D animations he’s directed more times than I can count and I’ve studied the Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing Overdrive character sheets like CRAZY because even though they’re super stylized and 2D, the characters still feel like they occupy a 3D space.

Here’s a link to some of my super old stuff. It’s embarrassing for me to look at but it might help some of you who are feeling down about your art. You can always improve if you just keep at it!

Sonic Prime thought

Imagine if the universes Sonic goes to in the show are all derivative of the shows from the past?

We already have a SatAM-esque universe. There could also be:

A universe where Sonic's friends travel the cosmos, explore a variety of planets and fight planet-killing cyborgs, a la Sonic X's final season.

A universe where everything is like Looney Tunes and everyone has the cartooniest of physics and immunity at their disposal, much like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

A universe where Sonic's friends play in a rock band and are the chosen monarchs of a kingdom, sorta kinda like Sonic Underground.

A universe where the cast completely lives in a filmed sitcom with jokes, staged action sequences and no 4th wall, calling back to Sonic Boom.

A universe where the heroes live in a floating paradise in the sky, and the villains live in a desolate place on the surface, straight out of the Sonic OVA.

A universe where everyone is mute and everything is told through actions, body language and obvious meme faces, like Sonic Mania Adventures and Team Sonic Racing Overdrive.
