When we talk about Pride and Prejudice we always discuss the change and the work Darcy did on himself, which is fine, because it was a major change and for good, which helped him be a better person
But we never talk about the change Elizabeth had to make, and not just in herself, but in her whole fucking family!
That woman had to hear from the mouth of the person she hated the most that her family was ridiculous and the cause of her dearest sister's misfortunes and sadness, and she didn't want to believe it. All to return home and realize that Darcy was right, her family was a mess!
Lydia was a derailed, shameless child with no sense of responsibility, and Kitty, despite being older, was following in her footsteps
Mary, despite all the hours she put into her studies, had no sense of selfawareness and no common sense, which made her embarrassing at social events.
The mother was vain, gossipy, ignorant and impertinent, and more likely she used to be just like Lydia in her youth. Probably the reason why she encouraged such behavior.
And the father, the one person Lizzy adored so much, was not only aware of all these shortcomings, he allowed them and even entertained himself with the ridiculousness of his wife and daughters, without bothering to correct them or set limits, something that he found annoying and uncomfortable.
And Lizzy would have been well on her way to becoming just like him if it weren't for Darcy's criticism.
Lizzy understood that any chance of fortune and happiness in the future for her or her sisters would be undermined by her own family.
They had already done it with Jane, and would continue to do so if Lizzy did nothing about it, so not only did she have to correct her own behavior, she also had to make an attempt to correct that of her family, which was nearly impossible for her without the support of her father and Jane, and unable to reveal what she knew from Darcy

AITA for allowing my daughter to go on a trip with a friend?
u/AristotleLivesInMe
My wife and I have five daughters, aged 22-16. As you can imagine, the house is constantly noisy and busy. My wife is also a big source of disorder. I tend to stay in my study away from all the chaos.
A few months ago my youngest "Lyla" was invited to travel to a seaside resort with a friend. It seemed like a golden opportunity to have some peace at home. My second eldest daughter, Beth, told me not to let her go as Lyla is very poorly behaved and Beth was worried it would reflect negatively on our family.
I did not want to deal with the whining from Lyla and her mother if I withdrew my permission. I was also hoping Lyla would be publicly embarrassed, which I really think is the only thing that would curb her behaviour.
Unfortunately, while on vacation, Lyla eloped with a man of poor character. Clearly her friend's husband was not giving her sufficient supervision. Her sister (my 4th daughter) also knew and said nothing to us. I went to try and recover her, but ultimately, Beth's boyfriend found them and paid for their marriage. So it all worked out well in the end and at no expense to myself (these young lovers won't take repayment).
I overheard some men in my home town yesterday calling me a bad father and an AH, but I can't see how this is all my fault. After all, my wife encouraged Lyla's poor behaviour, my 4th daughter should have warned us, and her Lyla's friend did not watch her well enough. What was I supposed to do? AITA?

I guess I should try parenting via public embarrassment, it has worked so well for you /s

u/MollyOrMary I really want to know what a "good" outcome would have looked like from this situation. He is such an YTA
u/ShakespearesMuse I guess his daughter is publicly shamed and comes back as an angel and not an emotional mess? Hate to tell you, but a 16 year old ugly crying is probably worse noise-wise than whining about a trip. Also doesn't do permanent damage to their life.
u/MaryOrMolly He could try actually parenting. But his poor little ears. 🙄

I hope Beth doesn't need physio from carrying her whole family on her back.

The Steele Family Album: Volume XIX
Back at the Steele family home, there's an important event taking place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simon is meeting his daughter Laura for the first time.
Tumblr media
But there's also a goodbye to be said - this time to Lucy. And William is actually cheering about it! 😮 Things have been rather frosty between them, ever since he witnessed Lucy's moment of weakness with George, but this is a whole other level of vindictiveness!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then - perhaps through divine providence - the living room furniture catches fire. Thankfully, the urns containing the ashes of Lucy and Meg on the mantelpiece survive the blaze intact!
Tumblr media
Catherine and Simon have also been a little careless again. Or perhaps it was by design this time?
Tumblr media
Catherine very sensibly goes into labour in the nursery...
Tumblr media
...and gives birth to a second daughter - Rebecca. Let's hear it for recessive genes! She has her great-grandmother's eyes, passed on through her grandmother Kitty.
Tumblr media
Shortly after, arriving home from work one evening - with a colleague in tow - karma finally sneaks up on William from behind, in the form of Grim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't mind too much. After all, he is going to rest in peace in a tropical paradise - or maybe just to sit on the mantelpiece, next to his fiancée and his cat. Who can say?
Tumblr media
Brie is noisily outraged at the departure of her Sim. But Independent Dolly - having no strong bond with the rest of the family - makes the pragmatic decision to try her luck elsewhere, and slopes off alone into the darkness of the night.
Tumblr media
Of course, Catherine reports Dolly as missing straight away - she is an elder now, and Catherine is worried about her being out on the streets. But whether she will be seen again is anyone's guess. Cats, after all, are their own masters.

Realistically we can’t all be Lizzie Bennet, so tell me which Bennet sister actually matches your personality? Kitty would be me I think.
