Kingdomino in Space
I have decided to try a deep dive into Kingdomino because it is simple enough to easily analyze and (more importantly) my son enjoys playing it.  As a skillbuilder, Kingdomino excels at spatial reasoning. The gameplay involves laying tiles to most efficiently build sections of land. The rules as written explain that players must build a 5×5 square using the tiles. Any tiles that do not fit in…

Lime was first to arrive, soon followed by Blue and Pink, and then Pine who were all delighted to see the return of our favourite bar staff.  There was a lot of chat about the recent changes at The Jockey (which is currently managed by the Healy Group who also run the Punch Bowl in Abingdon), and as everyone else arrived, people seemed more interested in gossiping than playing games.  It was a…

The most relatable moment in Jane Austen’s entire collected works, for me as a devoted card and board game player:
“What shall I do, Sir Thomas? Whist and speculation; which will amuse me most?” [Lady Bertram]
Sir Thomas, after a moment’s thought, recommended speculation. He was a whist player himself, and perhaps might feel that it would not much amuse him to have her for a partner.
As a euchre player myself (both euchre and whist being related to bridge, trick taking games with trump) I feel this. I feel it deep. If I was Sir Thomas I would never want to play a paired card game with my non-gaming wife (though I won’t throw her all the way under the bus, she seems to be able to play cribbage). Playing with someone who doesn’t know the game means your aces get trumped and they make bad calls and get you euchred!
I too would play opposite the ruthless Mrs. Norris. There are no morals when it comes to cards.
Context: whist is a game you play in pairs. It has a trump (a suit that beats all other suits) and involves taking tricks (everyone plays one card and the highest wins) and following suit (if you have spades and spades is lead, you play spades). While I have not played, it is similar to euchre and bridge. Those games require you to pay attention to your partner’s play and remember what cards have been played previously. Look, I’ll teach new people, but it is way more fun to play with experienced players.

Megtanulod megkülönböztetni egymástól a koreaiakat.
Korábban: Bevezető, Game of Thrones, Catan telepesei, Pippo, Munchkin, War of the Ring, Arkham Horror, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Starcraft, Doom, Castle Ravenloft, Shanghaien, Lunch Money, Smallworld, Love Letter, Pandemic, Dungeon Lords, Dungeon Command, King of Tokyo, Bizzarie, Cyclades, Alhambra,Colt Express, Rune Age, Dominare, Coup, Avalon, Sheriff of Nottingham, Star Realms, Torres, Spyfall, Welcome to the Dungeon, Dice City, Camel Up, Scythe, Exploding Kittens,  Viticulture,  Spartacus ,  Saltlands, Onwards to Venus, Root, Kemet, Nemesis, 7 Wonders Duel, Mississippi Queen, Lords of Waterdeep, The Mind, Windward, It’s a Wonderful World, Kingdomino, Terraforming Mars, Tiny Epic Kingdoms, Path of Light and Shadow, Hellapagos, Unmatched/Legendák Ligája, Fesztáv, Adventourist, Dune: Imperium, Furnace, Pax Pamir, Cascadia

Oh boy, get ready, it got a bit out of hand
List of Cherry safe board games:
Calico (you make a quilt so cats can nap on it, can't really fight others besides steal a quilt bit they wanted, can also be played alone)
Sagrada (similar to Calico except you make a stained glass window, also playable alone)
Tokaido (who can have the best time in Japan)
Wingspan (bird Yugioh, also playable alone)
Glow (collect light and make friends who may die but not the point to kill them off)
Tokaido (there is a garderner that grows bamboo and a panda that eats the bamboo and it's absolutely adorable)
Kingdomino (you pick up dominos and make your kingdom)
Dragomino (like kingdomino except with dragon eggs)
Catan, actually (you just make cities and roads, you don't fight or conquer anything)
Azul (you take tiles and build your floor, or chocolates for a box, or like flowers for a garden, depends on the version)
Quarto (like a weird chess tiktak toe thingy? I can't explaij it without Fully going into the rules)
Corridor (similar to Quarto)
Ohanami (build a garden based on numbers)
Tako cat goat cheese pizza (the silliest, a lot of slamming hands on table over other people's hands)
Mind you, as chill of a premise some of these have, it fully depends on the players if it will be nice and relaxing, or if you'll want murder, I've witnessed a man have a mini breakdown over not being able to get the right piece in Calico
Additionally, a list of a few more Cherry unsafe boardgames:
Exploding Kittens
The age of war
Hanabi (maybe not, you just make a fireworks show and work with your friends, dunno how much he'd mind that)
Awwwwwwwww those sound relaxing (although yeah. there are definitely grims who would make it a living nightmare to play these, and others would have the mental breakdowns halfway through). I think he'd have the most fun with the building ones, where there's a tangible end goal that he can work towards piece by piece.

Last Monday of the Week 2022-10-22
Diwali prep week so very little free time available.
Listening: I keep meaning to sit down with the new Titus Andronicus album but I have been too busy for the duration of an punk rock album, so instead here's the new The Tazers album from last month which I've been listening to because I'm going to their show later this week. They're a great local psychedelic rock outfit.
Watching: Nothing at all! A friend recommended Cyberpunk Edgerunners so I'm going to try watching that soon.
Reading: Also very little, although I did a little dive into the colour work in Mad Max: Fury Road for a post I'm writing, here's one of those articles that was good.
Playing: Played some board games at birthday party, including:
Tokyo Highway: a really stylish dexterity game about stacking a mess of objects on top of each other, you build road network out of ice cream sticks on stacks of wooden blocks and you score points by routing over or under other players roads.
Tumblr media
Kingdomino: Sort of like Carcassonne but you each have your own map and you're trying to pick tiles from a shared tile pool to build your map. Easy to immediately fuck yourself early on but if you plan ahead it's very well balanced.
Atlantis Rising: My contribution, collaborative worker placement game that manages to support up to 7 players without becoming too messy, and it doesn't fall victim to the failure mode of other collaborative games where one person directs the whole game. There's enough randomness that the optimum move is difficult to guess and individual players have several goals.
Tumblr media
Guns and Cash: a bluffing game about splitting the loot from a heist where you threaten your collaborators for their cut. Fun, and we did a run where we shuffled our bullets so even we didn't know whether we had bullet loaded which was extremely funny.
Making: prep for Diwali means lots of baking and cooking: learning how to do some of the foods that my parents usually do since I won't be here next year, plus some new biscuits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dramatically improved my frying skills.
Tools and Equipment: Going to formally pitch the new method for dicing onions that I just started using, dramatically improved the speed and quality of my onion slicing, it's a mixture of This Gordon Ramsay video and This Chef Jean-Pierre video, I cut my onions in half before peeling, I don't do the thing where Chef Jean-Pierre cores out both ends of the onion but I do skip the horizontal cuts and just go straight to dicing.

The Math of Kingdomino
Kingdomino is a light-weight and highly regarded tile-laying game. The simple rules and strategy make it perfect for families with young children. Kids quickly learn that there is a tradeoff between turn order and selecting the best tiles. If you choose a high-scoring tile this turn and you will almost certainly get the last to choose next turn. Scoring involves basic multiplication. While…

Going over the board game names mentioned in the above video, by stating their reasons for their positions, and giving my own. (In that order)
Bad names (In their opinion):
Rummikub - It is a made up word and, assuming it is a reference to the use of cubes, is spelt incorrectly - I agree with this sentiment
The Resistance - They feel that the name gives people false impressions of the gameplay - I have not played this game so cannot corroborate this opinion.
Battlestar Galactica: the board game - an exact quote is "Why would I want to play, like, a game off of a TV show I haven't seen, and, like, the box art it's like a TV art picture." Essentially meaning that the name and art rely on people seeing and enjoying the show. - This is a good reason to not be drawn in by this name, though it was stated in the video that the gameplay is rather good.
Gloomhaven - The person with the opinion just thinks it's a lame name - This is the first one so far that I disagree with, I quite like the name Gloomhaven, and It would likely entice me to try the game.
Love Letter - The name given people false impressions that it is a romance story game, when it is actually a strategy game - I have not played the game, but based off of what I know of it, I agree with this reasoning.
Crown of Emera - The person thinks it is simply a boring name - Im very neutral on this name, so I can't really say anything about it.
Star Realms - The person thinks it is simply a boring name - I agree, and feel that it may have been trying to get some interest from the Star Wars and Star Trek fanbase.
Agricola: All Creatures Big And Small: The Big Box: For 2 Players - Too long of a name, also slightly difficult to pronounce - Agreed.
Legendary Encounters: An Alien deck building game - Too long of a name - Agreed to an extent, the majority of the length comes from what is essentially a description, so I am unsure if it really counts as part of the name.
Aeons end - Difficult to pronounce - Disagree. As long as you know how to pronounce Aeon. During research for the most effective way to convey it's pronunciation, I discovered I had been saying Aeon incorrectly my entire life (I pronounce it Ay-On, when it is apparently pronounced Ee-On), and as such, I am slightly in agreement with this.
Kingdomino - Difficult to pronounce - Disagree, it seems to be pretty general consensus that it is pronounced King-Domino, the pronunciation that I read it as to begin with, though I did not do extensive research.
Ghost stories - misleading name, gives the impression of it being a story driven or story telling game, when it is just a strategy game. - I haven't played it, so can't really comment on this.
Good names (In their opinion):
Galaxy Trucker - Simple, and easily sums up the game - from what I understand, I do heavily agree.
Root - short name, that makes sense in the setting of the game - I feel similar about this name.
Azul - a nice sweet name - Azul is a very nice name, though apparently the gameplay will make it so you "never feel positive after you play it".
cafe - a simple name that effectively conveys the game - The game is about coffee and delivering to cafe's, It's a good name for the game.
IceCool - a play on high-school, while also playing off of ice, as it is a game about penguins - I'm pretty neutral on this one, it's not very good, it's not very bad, it's just ok.
Above And Below - a simple name that describes what you do in game, going above and below the surface - I like it, it explains the premise and how it works very quickly.
Snake Oil - very self explanatory of how the game works, assuming that they know what snake oil means - an effective name for a game about selling stuff.
On mars - a simple name that combines extremely well with the box art - The box art is beautiful, and when combined with the simple name it creates a very interesting box.
The Chameleon - It's a really good name for the game, because you're just trying to blend in with the group - It appears to be a good name for the game, based off of descriptions. The name is rather hard to read on the box, but that fits the theme of the game.
Between two Cities - artistic, poetic, implies what the game is about - I don't really know anything about this game, so I can't really comment.

7th March 2023
Plum and Blue were first to arrive and, by the time they had finished their enormous rack of ribs (or given up and had a doggy bag made up), almost everyone else had arrived.  There were a few people missing, but still enough for two games of four.  The first was the “Feature Game“, but nobody really wanted to commit to that until they knew what the other game was going to be.  As he had done the…
