How can you live in fear of your own body?” ✨📚✨ Trigger warnings include attempted suicide, self harm, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, violence, abuse, and sexual abuse. 📚 Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow is a dark contemporary young adult novel following Charlotte “Charlie” Davis before and after she attempts to commit suicide. The first thing that I have to say about this book is that I didn’t enjoy the way the book was written. It was really fragmented; some chapters only had a couple of lines on them, while others had pages. I found it to be distracting from the overall story, but it did make it a quick read. This novel deals with a lot of heavy topics, and for the most part, I think it was done well. Glasgow isn’t afraid to show us what Charlie is thinking or feeling, which sometimes leads to some really complex and gritty discussions about self harm and abuse, but at times it did feel like some of the things included were only for shock value. I think some of the issues discussed could have been explored more in depth if only the author didn’t try to tackle so many at once. That being said, Charlie and her thoughts and fears as she tried to build a life for herself after leaving the institute were incredibly realistic, as were most of the interactions she had with the people around her. But I do have to be honest and say that I found it hard to like Charlie as a character at times, which I think is important; not everyone is likeable all of the time. It’s day 4 of #spookathon and I’m reading How To Make Friends With The Dark by Kathleen Glasgow! I tend to go into books blind unless I see them hyped up, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book! I’m half way through and I’ve literally cried the whole time. . . This book deals with coping with the death of a parent, something that I’m extremely sensitive about as I’ve almost lost my mom multiple times due to health issues. I ended up taking a break from reading it to call her and talk about how it was making me feel. It made me realize how close I came to being in a similar situation to Tiger as I’m reading about her struggles. I definitely wasn’t prepared but I’m loving it so far and I think it might be a new favorite!! . .
