Concept:

Xanxus swears fealty to Tsunayoshi in private. No one outside of the Varia and Tsunayoshi's closest family knows this has occurred, and that's the way Xanxus likes it.

In public, Xanxus delights in putting on a facade of hatred and disdain for Tsuna, cultivating a reputation as most-likely-to-stab-Tsuna-in-the-back. Xanxus finds this works wonderfully to keep his little brother safe, as anyone thinking of killing Vongola X first seeks out an ally in Lord Varia. It's so nice when the rats come to him, saving him the work of sniffing them out.

At some point post-canon, Gokudera definitely gets arrested. During questioning, he's accused of mafia ties. Gokudera defends himself thoroughly and expertly, then finishes his whole rant with, "Besides, I'm not exactly the type to be happy spending my days bowing down and saying 'Yes, Boss' to someone, the way those mafiosi have to."

The clip gets copied from the station records and sent around the underworld. No one can watch it without bursting into laughter.

Tsunayoshi, who has spent far too many hours trying to convince his Right Hand to loosen up on the formality, can only despair.

("Hayato," Tsunayoshi complains, head thumping down on his desk.

Gokudera drapes a blanket across Tsuna's shoulders, face mock-serious. "Yes, Boss?"

CHAPTER 2 OF PART FOUR OF THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE AU!!!!

As far as I can tell, the katekyou hitman reborn fandom is of two minds about whether or not Tduna should become a Mafia Boss.

One side sees his refusal of being the Tenth as linked to shis depression and low self-esteem, believing that he doesn't deserve/can't do things. With this view point, becoming a powerful and respected Mafia Boss is symbolic of his growth away from that mindset and towards one thatclets him thrive.

The other side sees Tsuna being forced to become a Mafia Boss as emblematic of the way he's been talked over and used his entire life. Him becoming Decimo is the bad ending, and a good ending would involve either finding someone else to take over so he can go off and live his life with his guardians or dismantling the Mafia wholesale.

I tend to prefer the first viewpoint, because it makes me feel better about my own depression and it's cooler. I do sometimes enjoy the second though, depending on the fic. I'm not a big fan of the get rid of the Mafia idea though. Besides the fact that dismantling crime never works without addressing the underlying causes first, my interpretation of Flames includes the understanding that Active Flames come with sides of increased stubbornness, territorialism, tribalism, insanity and violence. With that understanding, it suggests that regardless of there being a mafia or not, flame users would still cause mayhem wherever they go. It's better that they do this to each other than to defenseless non-flames users. The Mafia is a useful framework to give flame users community and opportunities to employ violence against each other.
