The character names in Kataow are amazing because first, you have Kipo— lovely name, love how it sounds, and I’m it has some amazing meanings that tie in to Kipo as a character.
Then you have Wolf. You never learn her previous name, but Kipo calls her Wolf (full name: Wolfatha Christie the Fourth) and Wolf accepts it. She never asks people to stop calling her that. It’s a perfect name for Wolf.
You’ve got Benson. I haven’t met many Bensons (usually, just ‘Ben’) but it sounds familiar and nice. Benson is a nice guy. A good friend.
Mandu is a blue four-eyed and six-legged pig, named after the dumplings Kipo’s dad used to make. It’s a little odd but hey, mute pig— and it has sentimental meaning to Kipo— so it fits Mandu perfectly.
You’ve got Kipo’s family Lio (not an uncommon name) and Song (beautiful name) and Hugo— they all fit well with Kipo.
Hugo later takes the name Scarlemagne— a play on ‘Scar’ and Charlemagne’. That’s so clever!
There’s also Jamack, Troy, Dr Emilia (sounds like a normal human name, but still cool for an antagonist), and may we not forget Yumyan Hammerpaw.
And then you have… Dave. Just Dave. Dave the Bug. Dave the metamorphosing bug mute. This is so hilarious, it’s perfect.

*BREAKS IN THROUGH THE DOOR* Hi can I request scarlemagne general romantic relationship headcanons post redemption? Thank you!
Hugo is recipromantic, so you'll have to be the one to initiate the relationship. If you don't make the first move, it'll just never occur to him. But once you do tell him, it's like a switch flips in his brain and you shift in his mind from "friend" to "partner" almost instantly. Same with "I love you"s.
While special events get the exact level of over-the-top pomp and circumstance you'd expect from our favorite dramatic monkey man, the everyday of the relationship would be very chill. Most "dates" would be in private settings; making dinner for one another (he's a surprisingly good cook), dancing to recorded music, curling up in front of the fireplace, and the like.
If you have any sort of musical talent/training, he will absolutely want you as his accompanist. And if you don't, no worries! He's more than happy to simply have you listen in. Either way, expect to have at least a few songs written for you.
Hugo craves physical contact. No matter the time or place, expect him to rest a hand on your waist or wrap an arm around your shoulders. And unless you're 100% bald or shaved, he will run his fingers through your hair. He is still a monkey, after all.

SOOOO Lt. Kipo, where Hugo stole her as a baby and they grew up as siblings, taking over the surface together. She brings out his compassion earlier on, while he raises her believing that Lio and Song only viewed them as experiments and not as actual children. It strikes me as a Silco and Jinx situation (what is it w me and that dynamic.) except Hugo is genuinely very emotionally wounded and traumatized, and a lot of what he does stems from a (very misguided) desire to protect Kipo from going through what he did.
Kipo is actually very similar to her original self, but more impulsive, a lot more abrasive when it comes to her friendliness, and with sum trust issues. Since she spent her infancy in a much more turbulent environment, her jaguar senses emerged early, and she is low-key in a constant state of fight or flight (why her eyes and ears are always out). She can relax, but her mute features never really completely disappear.
The star on her uniform is from the blanket btw--it becomes a symbol of their bond and their shared belief that they can’t rely on anyone else but each other. Woo 🥳

Random theory about “Kipo”: Scarlemagne named himself Scarlemagne specifically because he saw a parallel between himself trying to build a new civilisation to replace the fallen United States of America and Charlemagne building a new Empire to replace the fallen Western Roman Empire.
Bro, this is so concise I'm surprised it isn't canon. Love him owning his scars, too.

Hello hello! It seems that you're feeling a bit salty about Kipo again, aren't you? I'm exactly in the same boat, I don't think I'll ever fully recover from That Incident lmao
Yeah, I was feeling fondness for Scarlemagne/Hugo, he'll always be one of my favorite characters (just got archived with other rotating interests, and now seems to be rotating back along with toh); and thinking again how much his life sucked, how he deserves better, and getting salty about S3. Honestly the kipo s3 salt never left me either, it just got buried. I've now got some salty posts I'm mulling over in my drafts too. And been looking at some new Scarlemagne/Hugo fic.

Scarlemack
So Jamack is older than Hugo/Scarlemagne, imagine they start dating and Lio doesn't like that, but no one can know that!
I mean, Jamack and Lio are friends! They get along well, but not well enough to be okay knowing that Jamack is dating his son.
Jamack could easily be Hugo's father.
When Jamack and Hugo were friends, it was fine, he didn't care about the age difference, Jamack was kind, intelligent and got along well with his son.
Now that they were dating, Jamack became a bad influence, in some way, on his irrational brain as an overprotective father.
He doesn't tell anyone, except Song, he tells his wife everything, since Hugo seemed very happy and calm, his nightmares subsided a little and his bad mood also went away, that didn't stop him from criticizing everything and being sarcastic but That's how they wanted it, and why to lie, Jamack seemed more positive and it was very funny to see how nervous and blushing he got when he was with Hugo.
