Lilies are my favorite flower for obvious reasons, so I got a lily tattoo for my 21st birthday. 20 Questions for Fic Writers!

I've been tagged by @stars-of-kyber and @andthebubbles. 😁 So although I feel barely qualified, I guess I best do this...

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

7. 🤗

I started about 2 months ago, so... and yes, they're all Kanthony. Initially just started as a way of contributing to Anthony Week 2023, and I didn't even expect that I'd actually do all 7 days.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

13,370.

Currently ranging at 661 to 3,779 per fic. Rookie numbers!

3. What fandoms do you write for?

So far, just my beloved Bridgerton.

But there have been a couple other shows that have tempted me...

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Astride - 166

Nursery - 118

Hunt - 105

Yours - 94

Temptation - 88

Having published a handful with various ratings, it's quite interesting to see the kudos, bookmarks (private vs public), and subs ratios! Much to think about.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes.

Why... I sort of have a need? Idk, when I see a comment it's hard to just leave it hanging there and not to reply. Like irl if someone looked at something I made and verbally commented on it... and I just stared back blankly not saying anything. 😐 This is how it feels to me on the receiving end at least haha. And my replies saying various forms of 'Thank you!' is probably quite repetitive, but hey ho.

Plus comments give you that lil hit of dopamine; from both povs as a writer or reader. Being on the reader side for most of my Ao3 activities I tend to comment on most of fics I read, I can't help it - I must tell you what I loved about it and why, and there's a pleasure in reciprocating that back too. Look, now I've written half an essay on the subject, gaaah. (I've not been on Ao3 as much as I'd like to recently, and because I opened it to scoop out the stats for some of the questions above I can now see that I have some unreads... and the need is happening.)

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hmmm *thinking really hard*, I don't think any of them have an ending that is all that angsty. If I had to choose, maybe Temptation?

The pattern I've shown so far in my posted works is that it's gonna be 90% fluff. Though that is liable to change. 😆

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Nursery?

I'm not sure, cause they've all ended on a pretty optimistic note so far. But that one has Kate and Anthony with a few of their kids, so it's the furthest on the Kanthony HEA timeline.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet...

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Ummm 👀 I may have dabbled in some smut.

What kind... hm, the kind where both people are panting for each other, and end up caving because they literally can't hold their horniness in anymore (this totally explains why I went feral for Bridgerton S2, ha). Another pattern I seem to have is making Anthony a submissive man puddle.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Not yet, but I do have some crack ideas I may explore.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, I very much doubt it.

How often does this happen to people?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. I'd certainly be all for it if anyone ever wanted to translate any works of mine. 😊

If I was proficient enough to write in other languages, then I would probably try publishing the different versions from the get go.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Kinda?

Nothing formal, but there was a lengthy comment thread on Reddit some months ago where myself and another user went back and forth re-writing the script for that stormy library scene 😅 (not so much re-writing what was already there, bar the last few lines, more of a continuation in a universe where Kate hadn't fled).

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Must I even answer this? Kanthony, c'mon now.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

There's only 1 work that I have, where I've actually started a chapter 2. And I have all the faith that I will finish it. ✍️🤓

Other potential WIPs, that are currently just posted as one shots, only exist in my head... who knows if they will see the light of day.

16. What are your writing strengths?

This question feels illegal to be asked.

I have no idea, I'm very new to this whole writing thing. At least in terms of fiction, so I'm not sure what I'd consider my strengths to be. I feel like I need some more practice before I can get a real sense of this?

I would say that dialogue usually comes very quickly to me, and it's having to fill in the bits around it that takes more brain muscles. So that might indicate something.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Everything apart from the answer to the question above.

But really I think it's remembering that there is a world outside of the main couple happening, and trying to describe the details there. Also other general 'setting the scene' stuff like clothing, weather etc etc. I usually just want to jump straight in with some random dialogue.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

On writing it... no thoughts; not done it yet!

If I needed to for some unknown fic reason in the future, I'm sure I'll be apologising profusely in the author notes for trusting Google translate and probably butchering whatever language it is.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Still just the one so far, Bridgerton. 😌

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Hunt 🥺🥹 I was a lot of feels, and just very indulgent tbh.

I also really enjoyed my shortest one, Obedient, which was in 2nd person (hadn't done that before). The writing of that one was just really fun and I idky but I've reread it quite a bit!

Do you prefer saphne or kanthony and why?! kanthony was too much constant bickering/clashing and not enough actual connection for my taste but i know that’s not a popular opinion!!

You know I wasn't on tumblr when the first two seasons of Bridgerton aired so I experienced it in a vacuum. I watched it with one of my closest fandom friends, we've been friends for about 10 years at this point, so we know each other really well and we respect each others' opinions too. We both liked both couples and both seasons, but we each had a preference. She preferred season 2 and Kanthony, and I prefer season 1 and Saphne. I didn't need to be on tumblr to know which one would be more popular though, this is the enemies to lovers website.

I tend to prefer the friends to lovers route - that's just who I am. But I think Kate and Anthony are so well written that it makes sense why they argue and fight against it and why they end up hurting a lot of people including each other (Daphne and Simon do this too, just differently.) As older siblings who stepped up to take their fathers' place after his death, Kate and Anthony are very similar, specifically similarly damaged. They put their siblings' needs above their own to their own detriment constantly. It makes sense that they could only fight against their attraction and feelings for each other - it makes sense that the only way Kate could come to terms with her own feelings was through the eyes of her little sister that she puts above all else - and it makes sense that she'd end up hurting her in the process, because that's what happens when you wall yourself off from your needs - especially emotional. You hurt people. (We get that with Anthony and Daphne too, in season 1. He projects his own romantic woes onto Daphne and Simon and tells her they can never be together when he's not actually seeing them, he's only thinking about his own doomed romance with Siena. Every time Kate tells Edwina Anthony is not for her she's talking about herself. Both of them are trying to save their beloved younger siblings from pain as well as themselves - and causing them pain - and also causing themselves pain.)

Daphne and Simon are both exactly my types as characters it's kind of insane. Simon's archetype is one I find appealing in both sexes, but Daphne's is exclusively interesting as a woman to me. Almost all of my favorite female characters are the archetypal perfect girl of their universe and they're so fucking lonely because of it that they're barely human. Simon is lonely too - loneliness is an important factor in being my favorite characters - and he's very defined by the abuse and neglect he suffered in his childhood. And then he meets someone who gives him hope - a friend and a lover and someone who makes the world seem bright. But he's so preoccupied by the pain and the anger from his past that he can't let himself take it. Daphne has the strength and the determination to demand he take it. Daphne is also very emotionally stunted and uneducated about certain aspects of life because the time she grows up in is so infantilizing to young women. (I appreciate Queen Charlotte for showing exactly why Mama Bridgerton is so fucking bad at basic sex ed, god her mother was a nightmare!) Her anger and humiliation at her lack of knowledge and understanding of the world is a lot. They do hurt each other along the way but ultimately choose each other (they choose happiness!) and idk I just love it a lot. A character like Simon being able to decide that love is more important than pain is very beautiful to me. I love that he gets to be Lady Danbury's son instead of his father's.

Ranking the Rokesby Series

So after recently reading all 4 Rokesby books, here’s my ranking of them;

1. The Girl With The Make-Believe Husband

Cecilia and Edward’s love story has to be my favourite from the sheer drama of it all. This book has everything; the hero suffering from amnesia, the heroine pretending to be his wife, a brother MIA, falling in love over correspondence, a strawberry-induced allergic reaction, and the ever beloved “there’s only one bed” trope. I also think Cecilia and Edward’s book is my favourite of the Rokesby series because while reading it I felt as though it was a bit Benophie-coded, due in part to the heroine having to go by an alternate identity of sorts and the hero not being any the wiser right up until the last few chapters (though to be fair Edward is suffering from memory loss - Benedict is just an idiot lmao).

2. The Other Miss Bridgerton

Andrew and Poppy are next and while I initially thought Billie was as chaotic a Bridgerton as her nieces and nephews, it turns out drama and scandal is simply a Bridgerton family trait, as proven by Poppy when she manages to get kidnapped by privateers. Andrew makes for the perfect charmingly cheeky hero and he definitely reminded me a lot of Colin especially with his inability to stay in one place for too long yet coming to a point where he desired more from life. I enjoyed the witty back and forth between the pair but also how closely they bonded through their deeper conversations and how their attraction became more and more palpable as the story progressed. I genuinely didn’t expect the drama that would ensue upon their arrival in Portugal but it made for a pleasant surprise and appropriately raised the stakes for them to realise just how much they meant to each other.

3. Because Of Miss Bridgerton

Now while I did thoroughly love George and Billie’s love story they’ve ended up ranking third only because there was so much drama in the above books in stark contrast. Again, I can’t help but compare the Rokesby series with the Bridgerton series and in doing so it’s so abundantly clear that this story is Kanthony-coded; from the enemies-to-lovers trope between two respective eldest siblings, the alleged supposition among the other characters that Billie is destined to end up with one of George’s brothers (even though it’s quite obvious that the supporting players are all lowkey side-eyeing the pair throughout), and even a game of Pall Mall featuring the mallet of death. While it could be viewed as an italicized version of Kanthony; TVWLM is one of Julia Quinn’s best stories for a reason so fuck it, why shouldn’t it be echoed?

4. First Comes Scandal

And just because Georgie and Nicholas’s story is ranked fourth doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it; again, purely based off of drama, this book simply wasn’t as wildly dramatic as it’s three predecessors. I loved the Muppet baby cameos of young ABC but if anything I loved it too much because I wanted more of them, plus I was a little disappointed that we never saw Edmund’s reaction to his best friend becoming engaged to his younger sister; did he get mad, was he shooketh, or did he find it a bit funny? For me the journey to Scotland dragged on a little more than I would have liked though I did enjoy reading how Georgie and Nicholas slowly fell for each other and transitioned from being friends to lovers (plus it was a nice touch having their first time being both of their first times; it gave their love scene a fresh dynamic from the rest of Regency couples’ first times).

I’ve been rather depressed about the upcoming season and the extent we will get Kanthony. I was hoping we would get a subplot like that (stupid) Jack Featherington one in S2 but it’s becoming more and more unlikely. I even saw someone post about all the different plots that’ll be featured in S3, which only means taking away screen time from our beloved Kanthony.

Sorry to go on but my point is - your Kanthony stories allow me to escape to what it could’ve been and especially with JB and SA’s acting. The way you describe their love, the way you write their banter and let’s not start on the smut scenes (🔥🥵) is absolute gold and wraps up all the details we didn’t get in S2.

Thank you for letting me get lost in your works and just imagine it is what we get on screen. Maybe in a parallel universe it is exactly this…

I do think that season 3 of bridgerton is going to have different plots and kathony might get lost in a bit... but at the same time, I reckon I'll be happy regardless? I know that they will have a plot because they're in the show, you know? the crumbs in the trailer were just that, crumbs, but I ate them up nonetheless, and I feel like I'll be perfectly happy filling in the gaps or writing stuff of my own if the show doesn't give me what I want. it's my favourite part about fanfic in that sense, because it's so transformative and allows for you to fix things in canon often. plus ultimately, I knew going in that each season of bridgerton would focus on a different bridgerton sibling, and it's not like season 2 was with saphne because rege had left the show and wasn't coming back. kate and anthony will have *some* kind of presence in season 3, and there have been enough hints to suggest there may be a baby along the way, so we'll see what happens.

also omg!!! so glad you like the banter, and the other stuff (lmaooooo) - I feel like despite me coming into the fandom more than a year late, I've had a lovely welcome from other kathony fans, so long may that continue <3 plus this pairing has made me come out of writing!hibernation and inspired me to write well over 100k in the space of 3 months, so I am really grateful for the feedback :)

Anthony Bridgerton loves his family. Really, he does. He has spent his life molding himself in the image of his beloved father, the consummate family man. And while he perhaps doesn't quite have the patience and emotional awareness that Edmund Bridgerton possessed, he likes to believe that he's done his best.

But sometimes, he thinks that the sweet, sweet satisfaction of being able to wring the necks of his idiot younger brothers might be worth the consequent trip to the gallows.

But then, when Anthony gazes into the pair of golden, syrup-brown eyes in front of him, currently narrowed in thin slits of fury, he thinks:

Nothing is worth leaving this. Kate. Not the rage-inducing meddling and general idiocy of his family's antics, nor his own, still-crippling fear of love and what it can move him to do for those he feels it for, not even his own status as a gentleman -- the source of his and his family's honor.

He would happily endure anything, give up anything to be alive. To be alive and be with Kate.

If only he could convince her of that.

"You dueled Simon?"

"Kate-"

"An actual duel?"

"Yes," Benedict nods, an insolent grin plastered on his face.

"With the guns, and the- the walking ten paces away from one another, and slapping each other in the cheek with a glove to signify your declaration of senseless violence."

"No, Anthony doesn't wear gloves," Colin corrects. "But the rest is accurate, yes. Or so I heard. I wasn't asked to be there."

"Oh, for the umpteenth time, Colin, you were but twenty years of age and someone had to stay behind to take care of Mother and the rest of the family. Anthony only asked me because I was the elder, that is all!"

Colin sniffs. "You two always do this! You go off on your little adventures and leave me behind with the rest of the family like I'm some child!"

"You are not a child-"

"Will you two imbeciles shut up?" Anthony barks.

"You will not yell at them for daring to tell me the truth!" Kate stops her pacing of the Bridgerton sitting room and puts her hands behind her back.

"Messrs Bridgerton, I require a moment with your brother. Would you be so kind as to give us a few minutes to speak privately?"

Benedict and Colin exchange glances with each other. They should protest, having been made nominal chaperones by Mother, who had unfortunately taken ill and was unable to receive Kate when Anthony brought her to Bridgerton House that morning. But after turning to look at Anthony, they immediately scurry out of the room without another word.

His patented my-tolerance-of-your-idiocy-has-ended-and-I-suggest-you-start-running-now gaze still works on them.

Good.

Anthony turns in his armchair to face Kate.

"Darling, if you would just let me explain-"

"Is this what I am to expect?" Kate asks.

He blinks.

"What is?"

"For the rest of our marriage? Is this what you are going to do? That anytime someone slights your precious honor, you shall engage in senseless acts of violence, risking either exile or death, both scenarios in which you will leave me?"

"Kate," Anthony says.

"I know you are a proud man, Anthony. It is- inevitable that you will once again land yourself in some scandal which provokes you to respond in such a fashion. And I know I am a strong woman. I have faced the prospect of raising a family on my own before. I believe in duty. I cherish it. I will not abdicate my role as mother or sister or Viscountess, even in your absence.

But this is not what you promised me. This is not a life suits the both of us. It does not suit me.

Anthony, I don't want to be left alone again. I can't."

She wraps two arms around herself, and it is such an unexpected show of vulnerability that he feels like the worst cad. Wishes he could kill the past apparition of himself that was such a reckless fool, that didn't know the great gift that would ride into his pathetic life on horseback not even a year later.

Anthony rises from his chair and rushes to her, enveloping her rigid frame in his arms.

"No," she whimpers. "Stop. I know what you are doing." Her hands nevertheless wind themselves around his neck as she presses her nose to his covered collarbone.

He inhales. Sucks in hot breaths and the unmistakable scent of lilies and sandalwood soap and Kate. He should hold her the way a gentleman would - politely, tenderly, with care for her limbs and extremities. Instead he crushes her to his chest, leaving no room for air between their bodies, fervently searching for some way to permanently attach her to his side.

Matrimony is not enough. Nothing will ever be strong enough to ensure that she always stays by his side, near his reach, in his arms. He must do it himself. He must show her that it is not a possibility that even exists for him - that he would ever, willingly leave her.

"You think there is anything in this world that could tear me away from you? Kate, you have humbled me so thoroughly that my existence, my heart, my honor- they are all tied to you. Irrevocably. I could not leave you. I could not."

"If anything ever happened to you-"

"And if anything ever happened to you?" Anthony smiles gently at Kate's flush of embarrassment. "It is a risk we shall simply have to bear. I have learned that now. But I cannot play wantonly with my life anymore, Kate. The man who did- he was a fool."

"A fool," Kate mumbles against his chest. "I hate him. He almost took you away from me."

"I have sympathy for him," Anthony explains. "The life he had was empty, devoid of meaning."

Devoid of you.

"But things are different now," he whispers, pressing a kiss to Kate's forehead.

"I should hope so. I'm not ever going to let you do something so foolish again."

"Foolish? Me?" Anthony feigns shock. "Like what?"

"Like growing those awful mutton chops Daphne described to me at lunch today. Or dying."

"And what is it that you would do to stop me?" Not that he requires any action on her part, but he can't resist it. He finds nothing more adorable- or terrifying- than when she threatens him.

Kate taps his nose. "I'll kill you."

"You'll kill me if I die? How would that even work?" Anthony's smirk prompts Kate's hand to wander down from his nose and poke the dimple that curves around his mouth. He takes the offending finger and gently bites it, relishing the darkening of her doe eyes as she finally cracks a small, sly smile.

"Oh, hush you," Kate says. "I'm allowed to be illogical. I'm in love."

Anthony presses his mouth to her forehead again, blinking furiously as his eyes begin to sting. They stand in the middle of the sitting room, swaying together with their arms around the other until Anthony's idiot brothers traipse back into the room and force them to part.

For now.

He's the lucky man whom she'll approach at the altar, after all. And then hang everyone, he will keep his wife settled against his side for the rest of his- very, very long, if Kate has anything to say about it- life.

Drabble based on a snippet of Kanthony conversation in this oneshot about Hyacinth wanting a puppy of her own. Please read and let me know your thoughts.

Hyacinth had a somewhat unique approach to looking after pets but arguing with her was a lost cause, so Violet decided to give her a chance.

Hyacinth let Newton roam around the house on his own without his leash because "pets are living beings and have right to freedom, Mama."

Violet kept mum even though she begged to disagree with her youngest daughter about letting an animal roam free inside her house. With Gregory gone off to Eton for his studies, she understood Hyacinth's need for distraction.

The day went by as smoothly as one could hope for and Violet was thankful to see that only one of her vases were broken. The carpets might have gotten dirty with muddy pawprints but she was thankful that atleast her beloved, beautiful furniture were left untouched.

One day done, only three more to go. By day four Hyacinth will be bored and get over the idea of getting a new puppy, she thought as she retired to her bedroom.

The second day, things took a wildly unpleasant turn making her regret the decision of going along with her youngest daughter's whims.

Violet walked into the sitting room in the morning and almost had a small heart attack. There were wool and tiny pieces of fabric scattered around the sitting room, covering every surface, the carpet, the tables, you name it. The cushions were torn and there were scratch marks on the furniture. Even her most favorite sofa set was not spared as the fat, evil son of a dog had managed to rip into the beautiful cushioning.

Hyacinth sat in the middle of the room, holding Newton, chuckling happily (or evilly) not at all bothered by the havoc or fact that the two of them were practically covered in filth.

"Hyacinth! What is this?" Violet gasped, holding a hand to her chest.

Hyacinth looked up at her with wide eyes, smiling innocently, "Newton misses his toys. Poor guy! We can buy him some when we go out for a walk in the evening and then he will stop chewing on the cushions, Mama."

Violet took a deep breath to calm herself down.

"Hyacinth, I want you to go and take a bath. Take the dog with you and make sure you clean him too."

"But, Mama -"

"Hyacinth Bridgerton! No more arguments and leave the animal with Mr. Carson. I don't want to see him inside my house again."

Hyacinth huffed and walked away, a downtrodden Newton following behind her.

Violet sent a short message to her son and daughter-in-law to come and collect their devil of a dog immediately.

Hyacinth felt that she did a stellar job, dog sitting Newton with whatever limited resources was made available to her though the Dowager Viscountess would beg to differ.
