I played Alttp & LA HD for the first time this year and they were both GREAT! 

When I picked the first one up I was kind of worried that I wouldn’t be able to appreciate the classic. I’ve played 2D games before but it’s been many years since I’ve touched one. I’ve also primarily grown up with 3D games, especially where Zelda’s concerned. Ironically though, that’s probably why the experience it created for me felt so special. It’s old with it’s own brand of challenges, and yet I really wasn’t expecting how much it would move me all throughout my playthrough. I was already giddy by all the charming details and character, so discovering just how deeply this game and it’s sequel has obviously inspired all the Zelda games I grew up playing with? I was floored. It all suddenly clicked and it was like discovering something old and completely brand new all at once. 

I enjoyed both games so much. There’s so many characters and scenes that caught my imagination and that has been calling me to draw. For now, here are some illustrations of Link in the mountain regions of the first game. The Bully and Gumball in particular (and as I like to call them) were some of my favorite character encounters. It must of been so surreal for Link to run into them only briefly after getting turned into a rabbit. They were a really amusing pair, and it was really fun trying to reimagine them!

not to be always talking about dana but one of the difficulties i find with trying to speak on her is the fact that a lot of the interesting dimensions you can read into her relate solely to depth that she offers miguel, as an extension of conflict for him.

like there is something really interesting to be read in the fact that as a couple they were most happy with one another in their mutual self centeredness (even if regret lingered at the edges re gabriel), that the distance between them isn't only exacerbated by miguel moonlighting as spiderman, but by the fact they're gradually becoming very different people with very different values and perspectives on the world, and their relationship begins to break and strain from that. but that still speaks more to dana's connection with miguel, moreso than herself.

there is something really interesting to be read in a person simultaneously swayed by promises of power and favour, but who also purports to shy away from active confrontation and her own accountability in those conflicts (and we SEE repeated evidence of this), and exploring how these two traits would come into conflict w one another. but these traits surface more from the writing moving dana around to whatever emotional position best offers conflict for miguel, than it does trying to paint a picture of a deeply flawed woman.

she never has to be a quote unquote "good" person to be an interesting character, but god. would it have been far more compelling to have just offered an cohesive insight into the way she operates and justifies her behaviour to herself.

When he and Punz finally talk, Dream isn't behaving as expected.

Only a month after the Las Nevadas attack did Punz see Dream again.

It wasn’t for lack of trying. Every night, they paced up and down the tower, biting back frustration every time they asked to talk face to face again, now that things had gone so horribly wrong. It doesn’t even have to be in the prison, they had said, and they hadn’t mentioned the way the vines and overgrowth made it feel more like a tomb than a home.

Dream had, instead, kept them updated on the situation in clipped notes over the communicator. It was an inefficient system at best, a breakdown in cooperation at worst, not to mention how a bullet point summary gave Punz exactly no insight into Dream’s mental state.
