hey c! can i ask how do we get over the feeling of embarassment when drawing self-indulgent shippy fanart? i've seen most of your amazing art and i've noticed that you don't seem to hold back when drawing fanarts, it's really beautiful with the way you portray characters' intimate relationships.. be it thru manga, illustrations, sketches. I have quite a lot of ideas on my mind that I want to draw similar to what you've drawn in terms of shipping characters, but I can't help but feel embarassed most of the time when I attempt to draw, thinking that it's "cringe" or I should draw something else with more deeper meaning into it, not just shippy stuff.. so I get very hesitant posting said art online or even starting the sketch (i haven't drawn 95% of my written ideas for nearly a year ;_; pain lol) since a few of my friends might see and question it lmao but deep down i really want to draw them ofc! i'm just very scared with what others think, but I do want to show myself more through my art and what I really like to draw.. Have you had a similar feeling of embarassment too c? I'm sorry if this got too long, I don't rly have any artist friends to talk to this about :')) I'm just so amazed at how you're able to fight the fear and just draw what you want in the end ^-^ I hope I can be like that too with myself and art, there are rare times where I just say f*ck it and post it anyway but 99% of the time is just me overthinking on whether it's cringe or not but I want to be cringe so bad so I can just be free and draw whatever the heck I want! ahh so many conflicting feelings ;_; i hope you get what I mean, thank you again for responding to my previous asks with the colors and numerous questions! I'm sorry for being so curious lol i just want to draw my favorite characters to kiss and cuddle so bad but im too scared to even draw them so intimately like that so i dont even draw majority of my ideas for fear of being judged :'D :') :(( hope u had a nice day c!

I might never show it but actually I relate to you so hard, it's not once or twice that I keep overthinking if my art is too self-indulgent and cringe, everytime I'm about to post my art I'm one click away to post it but I always have this nagging worry of people judging my art (even tho there's nothing wrong with it, for god's sake!!!) so I just spend another 30 minutes worrying about it until I close my eyes, flick my finger quickly, and close the tab.

And oh god in heaven put a curse on meme culture for this because there was this one instance when someone made a corny meme out of my art (that's not even a funny drawing) and dared to send it to me, I know it's only one person but it's enough to crush my confidence in drawing and posting shippy/emotional art.

Whenever I draw my favorite characters looking all seductive and cool I always worry people would think it's cringe, whenever I draw characters kissing I always worry people would think I'm weird, but then I remember about the other artists I like who post (their own) self-indulgent stuff and they make me joyous, I want people to feel the same way about my art when I post my own self-indulgent art too, so I guess that's what keeps me doing what I do today 😂

My 2023 resolution is just to stop giving a single damn about what people think of my art, if they think it's cringe then so be it, I can't control the mind of people, at least the cringe art gives me the happy brain chemicals and that's what truly matters 😊

There's some more quotes at the end but I'm breaking in here. fWhip has an episode coming out tomorrow, so I’m wondering if he’s playing up some stuff based on knowing what’s in the episode? If somehow it’s not in Jimmy’s ep from today? He periodically shouted lore, so I’m treating it all as lore. If this is what c!fWhip thinks is going on, and that it matches his action, what a marvelous little goblin man we have here. I want to put him under a microscope and poke him with a wonky stick.

Been rewatching the Star Trek movies (reboot) and yesterday i saw 1 and was like "i dont see how people see spirk??" And today i saw 2 and was like "oh i see it now. The background of this entire movie is basically Kirk likes Spock but Spock doesnt like him like that (and maybe even not as a friend...)"

Like we start off with seeing how hurt Kirk is that Spock didnt cover for him and is seemingly unappreative of Kirk saving his life. And this gives the impression (at least this was my interpretation) that Kirk's relationship with Spock at this point is/could be

Different than his relationship with Bones. He seems to have a more emotional relationship with Spock (yes i see the irony)

He doesnt seem to have had many close friendships in his life and when Spock essentially threw him under the bus it felt like a legit betrayal

He wants the relationship he saw in Spock Prime's mind meld and he thought they were there but they're not

He's into Spock, and knows Spock isnt into him, but hurt that they apparently arent as good of friends as he thought they were

And Kirk is hurt because he assumed Spock wouldn't report what actually happened (if not out of gratefulness than out of friendship) but Spock didnt because Spock doesnt understand why he shouldnt report it. Then on top of that disagreement it turns out Kirk lost his job because Spock reported that. And that hurts.

So Khan happens and the gang's back together and Kirk is still giving Spock shit about it. He's still hurt but its done in a more fun/joking manner so you can see he's getting over it. And when he let the very pretty Dr. Carol stay on as Science Officer just to spite Spock was a total make-him-jealous move (in the shippy sense)

And then theres the whole semi-public argument between Uhura and Spock and Uhura drags Kirk into it ("[something about ignoring others emotions in regard to his near death] and it's been bothering the captain too" "hey dont bring me into this... but yes") confirming that 1) thats the root of Kirk's current anger at Spock and 2) Uhura knows how important Spock is to Kirk and/or vice versa

And then you fast forward to the end and Kirk is sitting in that tube dying and seeing Spock cry over him, wanting to confess to either make sure Spock knows they're friends or about Kirk having a little crush on him (we dont know, Spock cuts him off). And he asks how Spock can choose when "not to feel" and Spock tells him in that moment he cannot not feel AND THEN KIRK DIES while they're holding hands through the glass... and when Kirk wakes up he almost completly bypasses Bones just to talk to and gaze at Spock

So yeah tldr im seeing why people ship them now

I know its probably predictable but I really like the serious/stoic/depressed/generally unapproachable person who cherishes the sunny/bubbly/kind person trope :v< like raincloud + sunshine = rainbow sorta thing?

I've applied it to soooo many oc pairings of all kinds, from romantic to family to friendships and rivalries.. its such a nice trope.

Basically if Rou has a serious character, you can bet mine will bounce behind like a puppy(like Bo and Vanicho, or Mic and Bun, Paris and roulette). Sometimes I'll do the serious character too but they tend to be super gloomy more than anything(Haze and Iris, Sigurd and Lilias,)

and for non-shippy pairings theres also Hail + Bunny(family), Marion + Siegfried(besties ;<; ), Peter + Mic(also bestiess), maybe Iris + Rose(besties, dunno if they quite fit the trope, but rose is very gloomy), and Zephyr+Haze(brothers)

as u can see its a trope i use to death but i dont care!!!! i like it and it makes me feel cozy

okay ik this is an opinion no one asked for but now im thinking about the whole dan and phil joint branding as opposed to Dan Branding™ and Phil Branding™. also this is fully adding onto posts on @ browncesario and @ demonetisation’s blogs and i feel too awkward to tag them bc i dont wanna make anyone feel obligated to read this lol but if i repeat anything they said or their anons said its not on purpose!

but like, full disclaimer while i love dan and phil i feel like its always been kind of obvious that they were marketing their relationship to us? obv not so much anymore but like... as much as people who dont keep up w dnp like to pretend that their only awareness of us as a fanbase was creepy objectifying shippers who should feel ashamed for harassing them etc etc, they’ve always been way more tuned into their audience than i think people realize. like they’ve *known* what we’re like, and i dont even mean just the bad parts. like they *know* that a lot of their fanbase is queer and genuinely has looked up to them as queer role models long before they were out, and a lot of that hinges on us understanding they were a couple. and ik they resented it and i wasn’t really part of the fanbase until a few years ago but hearing stories of how dan would react on liveshows sometimes and the like, barely concealed resentment for the fans sometimes shows that while they definitely had issues with it (which like,,, is fair), they also knew they were kind of stuck in a rut. because if their primary source of fans are people who like seeing them together, that meant that their success as youtubers/creators/etc depended on keeping those fans right where they were.

and to be clear! i know ive never been here primarily for their relationship; i started watching them bc i thought they were funny together and had a good dynamic, which wouldve been possible even if they really were just friends. i didnt get emotionally invested in the projection part of it until later. but even so, i was always aware as a fan that they were selling to us the speculation of their relationship.

and this is def pulling from other posts ive seen today but considering the fanfic part of tatinof, the fact that they wrote fanfic in tabinof and incorporated shippy fan art into the youtube versions, giving the people what they want, even little things like the conjoined baking challenge vid.... they wanted us to stay curious about their relationship. Even if on a very real level it was literally bringing back trauma for them, there was this weird cognitive dissonance between “im angry at people for speculating about us” and “look here, dont stop speculating about us! look we’re sharing a sweater! look we’re being ~domestic~ in ditls!”

which is also why i thought the hiatus wouldnt last long tbh, like i was genuinely shocked that after the success of ii they would completely separate their brandings from each other in 2019. and i wont @ this person but someone said it best years ago when they said that joint branding had to die for dnp to come out. bc it really did; how could they keep up the speculation if we have literally almost all the puzzle pieces laid out? when they’ve primed their audience to actively hunt down these pieces (even if again, they would rather have not, esp given what they each talked about in their coming out videos), but they dont *want* us to put it all together, how could they sustainably make joint content while keeping the speculation fanbase there? bc once the speculation is over, people are gonna keep wanting more. (and disclaimer i really dont think this applies to like....anyone i follow on here tbh bc in general i feel like we’re fine w them keeping their boundaries where they are, but we’ve all seen posts like that that indicate that people *will* want more, and thats something that they’re unwilling to give and understandably so).

anyway this all goes to the main thing that brought all this on today lol, ever since 2019 they’ve been trying to cultivate their own separate branding from each other, and while i’m here for it tbh, surely they know that they’ll never escape their old joint branding. Which also means never escaping the spectre of relationship speculation. so i have mixed feelings about seeing dan act shocked that people could ever speculate about his private life once he became famous bc like 1) thats literally just what happens when you become famous, and 2) ....he and phil egged it on up to a point, and that doesnt mean it didnt upset them but it definitely feels off for dan to always be so pikachu face about having had fans that speculated about his relationship. like dan you literally wrote erotic fanfiction about you and phil, pieced together fan art illustrating it that showed you and phil in a homoerotic lens, and yet you’re *still* acting shocked and indignant that fans got invested in your relationship/the possibility of your relationship?? idk man. its confusing bc at the time i took things like that as “oh, we’re in on the joke,” but ever since 2019 they’ve made it more clear that we’re not, but we’re also not *not* in on it to an extent (looking at you, cah phan edition)

so im def still excited for dan’s book (like the subject doesnt terribly interest me tbh but i do wanna see what he does with it and read whatever highlights inevitably get posted on here), but as always w the end of regular joint content, im lowkey here for the over-analyzing about the relationship between dan, phil, their fans, and their content bc dear god we never run out of material to rant about

4: Tell me about one of your abandoned WIPs. Why did you abandon it?

I usually talk about The Dead FicTM everyone knows about since i talked about it a lot before giving up, so today im gonna talk other abandoned wips. Right now the omegaverse soumate wrestling au fic is this close to be officially abandoned, its been two weeks and with my winter break over i dont think im coming back to it anytime soon. It's what it sounds like, omegaverse soulmate wrestling au, lots of fighting, soulmates who dont know theyre each other's soulmates, heats, scents, all that abo jazz, and also blood. Another abandoned wip was a steampunk au in which luciano was a pilot that won all the airplane races that martin's family sponsored, it was secret dating and had plenty of angst. And another one from this winter break was supposed to be a porn with feelings fic where brarg is a married couple that goes on a second honeymoon in a very very cold snowy place to try fixing their relationship that was going through a bad phase (spoilers: they fix it). Maybe one day i'll get back to one of them.

6: What are some topics you will never write about?

Coming out. I just.. dont like coming out stories lol i think there's too many of them and they dont really interest me. I don't know what other topics i would never write about because tbh pretty much anything can be interesting. I have attempted to write horror before so a lot of things i'd stay away from in like a standard shippy fanfic could be very nice on a horror tale or even a thriller. It's hard to think of topics that i think are so uninteresting that i can say i'll NEVER write about from any perspective.

A Very Shippy Christmas prompt 4: Carols

This is just something silly and dumb I wrote on 4 hours of sleep 😅 Don't mind me

Snow fell outside of the drafty apartment, but the detective was warm under the heated blanket his spouse kept. They'd had to work a double shift that night, so he'd gotten home much earlier than Rain, and decided to get things ready.

The partner in question came inside the smallish unit, shutting the door and letting snowflakes shake out of their hair. Usually they loved the stuff, and it kept their spirits high! Today, though, they were tired. As soon as they dragged their tired self to the bedroom, their eyes softened.

"Hey, handsome."

"Hey, you're home!" Dick noticed the way their shoulders slumped and frowned in concern, throwing back a corner of the blanket. "Come on in, pal! I got it all nice and toasty for you!"

Rain smiled, and hesitated for only a second when they thought of all the work they still needed to do. Dick seemed to anticipate this.

"I cleaned and made us up some noodles, so if you're hungry I can get you a bowl! This one is on me! You just relax tonight," He coaxed them, beaming when they relented. The warmth of the blanket felt like heaven to his tired spouse, and they immediately cuddled up to him under its comforting cover.

Dick put a hand on their arm, then recoiled. "You're ice cold, pal! I'm gonna have to call you Snow instead of Rain now!" He pulled them in close, right against his broad chest. "Let me warm you up!"

They hummed and nuzzled against that chest of his, leaving him struck with a warm feeling that didnt come from the blanket, but his heart instead. The love of his life so cuddly and soft in his arms, needing him, wanting him... This was only accentuated by their next sigh of, "I missed you so much today. I couldn't wait to get back home and just... Do this."

Dick smiled down at them, basking in the glow of this moment. He began to rub their sore back, feeling them relax against him. "Aw, Sunshine... I always miss you when we're away from each other! But knowin' that I get to come home and hold you like this keeps me fighting on through the day!"

Moments passed, and he began to play with their festive hair, a smile on his lips. He hand his fingers over the colors; Red, green, red, green. It was so much like them, so much like the Christmas spirit and cheer that they embodied so beautifully...

After a while of the two in silence, the detective began to hum. That humming gradually progressed into a recognizable melody, one that Rain smiled upon hearing from him. "It... it's not Buddy Holly, its..." They looked at his quizzical face, pausing their correction in its tracks, then broke out into a huge, irrepressible grin. "Nevermind, I like your version better. Keep going."

Dick saluted out of habit, "You got it! Anything for my Sunshine!"

They snuggled back up just in time for the next line, "Don we now our day of peril, fa la la, la la la, la la la!"

He continued on in his gruff voice that was not very suited to singing by anyone else's standards, but Rain felt completely at peace, and completely in love.

Eventually, they lifted their head again to steal a kiss from his lips between verses. "I love you, silly. Even if you dont know Christmas carols."

Opinion on;

Character in general: I honestly can’t answer this without talking about you so. Let me try first opinions/at first glance. Forgive me cause this might be an arrow to the knee. I…. Actually didn’t care much for Hector. Note I said DIDN’T!! But I mean he’s from a game that I know nothing about? That being said, from the screen shots I’ve seen from mostly you, I’ve come to notice that Hector is very much a mood. I really do like his no filter sort of attitude. That being said, before I met you and witnessed your hector (and idk how i even found you tbh), he’s a character that… I paid little to no attention to. I apparently! have a Hector in my FEH game. I never knew. But that’s how little I really cared for him. It sucks to say that, but he’s from a game I didn’t know soo… I mean, its not hard since, I don’t know many of the older games, but still. I’m relatively new to Fire Emblem. And Hector is one of the rare muses that I’ve come to love because of how somebody portrays him and not because of a game. Anyway…..

From your writing though, I find him to be boisterous kind of guy. He’s like a big old Teddy bear! A Muse I can stand by to be honest. I mean most of the time at least. He isn’t without his flaws for sure.. but stil I want to think that he’s a great man. I always say that Muse A is somebody that the world doesn’t deserve because of XYZ, but honestly, I think for hector? He’s definitely somebody where I’m like. Yea, the world is deserving of you. Hes def a man that I will defend for sure. I think I stan Eliwood just a little bit more! But I also stan Hector too! and yes, I stan him cause of you! Anyway, lets move forward.

How they play them: Nox, man. Where DO I START? damn, I really don’t know??? I’m also extremely biased too. You’re a wonderful writer in general and your portrayal is honestly one of the best portrayals for any character! I mean this too. I mean, I can say that about a lot of people but.. Honestly, there’s not many that when I see a character, I don’t instantly think of a specific MUN. I’ve done it for a few characters already in various situations. I won’t go into depth about which characters, but I can tell you that it’s less than 10. (as in less than 10 muns – not characters ) These people, while most I’m friends with or talk to (but there are a few in there that I don’t talk to!), have been able to create such great metas and have done a wonderful job at characterisation that it leaves me amazed. I’ll admit that somebody even made me go from hating that character to loving them because they managed to fix the plot holes and bad characterisation that the canon had made him to be. What I am trying to get at though is there aren’t many people that can do that! To make me fall in love with a character? And Nox, I am honestly really happy to tell you that you have that honour. You really do.

I cannot look at hector and not think its you. I know that you say you try, but by the gods, you have. You’ve done so well on him that I think it’s YOUR character. I’ve honestly begun to start reading your other threads/answers that you do for others because I can’t get enough of him. While no i don’t normally read other people’s threads, there are a few that I’m like, yea I wanna see what nox wrote today. It has nothing to do with my interactions with you. While I love and adore our interactions, I love seeing hector outside that sappy/shippy stuff we do! I know this is getting long but you sent me this, I want to tell you. I only wish that I had better words to tell you.

There isn’t any word to tell you how wonderful you do with him. As I said before, I only wish to see him in situations where he’s forced to be OOC. I want to see him in situations that push him out of his limits. You already have to an extent in one answer I’ve seen, and this was since I last told you that. And really? It’s absolutely wonderful. Sometimes I feel like I’m bothering you too much, but sometimes I feel like I want nothing more than to grab a bowl of popcorn and read all of your content. And God, Nox please let me tell you that its really hard for me to fall in love with a character like that. It’s hard cause I end up playing favourites, and I don’t mean to. I want to be fair to everybody. I know I’m supposed to give you concrit, but seriously? I think all the concrit I have for you is nothing but good stuff to be honest.

Like I want to see him at his weakest, where he’s on his knees. I want him to admit he needs help. But then again, I’m sure you do to. He’s a frustrating man. But you do him so much justice to him. Honestly? I just want to say this one last thing. THANK YOU.

Ok.. so do you think Charlie's ''Did you break up with someone too?'' to Dean refers to Castiel or Benny? Personally I like to think it refers to Cas since I ship Destiel, but Benny also seems plausible in the context...

Oh, my friend… I love this one so much :P You’re pressing my meta buttons here.

On the surface text, the episode opens with a recap that as far as I recall was pretty much just comparing Sam breaking up with Amelia to Dean giving Benny the adios. Charlie’s line is also seemingly touching on the same thing but in a surface text way you can shrug it off as the fact that it’s just a comparison - even go fairly deep on it being a commentary on the way that the brothers give stuff up for each other whether it’s a lover or vampire BFF who totally deserved better… And you can get quite deep in talking about all that without really needing to think too deep about the comparison that brought you there

Of course because it’s paralleling a break up to something else that looked a hell of a lot like a break up, it’s queer subtext around Dean and Benny. I personally think there’s no real implication Dean and Benny were a Thing, or that Dean in particular was romantically interested in Benny especially as the overlap with Cas drama is just too huge. However, in the got-back-to-earth side of the story, Benny is played off instead of a Dean/Cas love triangle, a Sam and Dean one and Benny is used to start off the jealousy and insecurity about being brothers that fuels Sam’s meltdown (Cas is involved in this too - honestly that 1 second blink and you miss it shove to get shotgun in 8x08 is the entire basis of this in a way :P Benny soaks up a lot of this which makes it easier in a sense that Cas doesn’t take too much fire for getting between Sam and Dean).

Obviously if you like that sort of thing the relationship subtext between Dean and Benny makes the other point of the love triangle coded that way, though I see it as jealousy about Dean having someone else who calls him brother (as Benny does, repeatedly.) The actual subtext here (Dean sneaking around with a secret relationship, followed by Sam’s issues with the discovery of it, Sam clearly comparing it to Ruby’s seduction of him though I don’t think he says so in as many words, and the break up) is more on Dean and his relationship to Benny, in the way that it looks and the way people react. Charlie’s comparison is part of that: though Dean doesn’t inherently do anything relationship-y with Benny, everyone around him reads it that way and it creates a sort of… bubble around it.

I think it does count as Dean is bi subtext in the sense that it’s part of a wider pattern of Dean always having this stuff, there WAS romantic coding between them (because of the heavy paralleling to Sam and Amelia through the entire first half of the season equating Dean and Benny to that relationship) but maybe more in a potential or missed opportunity way (and I feel like Benny could be read as in love with Dean very easily). It’s kind of just… stuff happening in his orbit all the time that ends up coding him this way because of the relentless way it attaches to him :P Since I mentioned 10x19 already today re: Sam and Rowena, I’m just going to throw in a reminder that Benny is an established powerful part of Dean’s subconscious. There was no direct reason he’d be called up unlike how Rowena had a very immediate relevance to Sam. Benny just affected Dean that much that a spectre of him was such a powerful choice in that case)

Though the parallels were all between Amelia and Benny, in the recap of 8x11 and the end of 8x10 clearly being about this in DIRECT parallels, Dean ALSO is starting to have real issues with Cas because of his weird behaviour. Cas fucks off at the end of the episode in 8x10 and doesn’t return until 8x17, while Dean gets increasingly worried about his absence, and this is the first episode of that in between time as the main plot drama with Cas festers in the background. Dean DOESN’T have an emotional arc about Benny in this time in the same way that we never get any comment about Benny being on his mind between seeing him, and in 8x10 Dean is actually pretty neglectful of him because of all the drama going on (involving Cas, who comes to him to start them off on this one, but also some Sam drama on the side)…

If we compare it to the similar emotional structure of season 11, it’s like 11x11 where Dean has no idea Cas is possessed by Lucifer but that and the surrounding episodes really start to lay on the irony that he hasn’t noticed yet. Since 8x11 is the start of a period of worrying about Cas.

For example our first ever episode that starts with the now standard pattern of Winchesters in the Bunker, one comes into the room and asks what’s up, find a case that way, etc, part of that conversation is the “have you heard from Cas” thing we get oh so used to hearing in this much-repeated conversation :P This all builds until 8x16 which ends with Dean asking where Cas is all tearful after that prayer…

So, this comment about a break up going forwards, can have a double meaning of the rocky times indicated by how weird Cas is (and 8x10 ends with Sam and Dean warding the cabin so they can talk about how weird Cas is and how he flapped off so strangely and Dean of course is very hurt by it). The fact that he left has an open-ended feeling of hurt and worry for Dean about what’s up with him, and is the emotional arc we’ll get if we have to make it a competition between Cas and Benny about what’s affecting Dean going forwards. Benny sort of gets filed with Lisa in things we never talk about again, but if Dean is hurting and weird about it… Cas is the one who we see drama about ongoing :P

I also think there’s double meaning in what Dean says to prompt that:

DEAN Yeah, well, now he’s more committed than ever, so there’s that. But, trust me, this life – you can’t afford attachments. You just got to… let go.

Season 8 has a lot of Cas fucking off when Dean wants him around - it’s basically the point of their emotional drama. In 8x22 Dean says “sounds like him” when Sam can’t find Cas in the Bunker, and in 8x23 Cas comes to Dean telling him he’s going to go lock himself up in Heaven forever for the sake of fixing it. In 8x11, Dean’s so far lost Cas in Purgatory only to discover Cas willingly stayed behind, gone through the process of adopting Cas as a hunter in 8x08 only to have Cas choose to stay behind and not come with them, then Cas pops up in 8x10 wanting Dean’s help, and flaps off immediately and weirdly enough he and Sam need a crisis meeting about it.

Dean very clearly wants Cas to stay, so in this respect, Dean’s abandonment issues are deeply at play in this season, as he keeps on trying to keep Cas, and to make him stay, and losing that. I can understand why he’d be (doubly) bitter about attachments after having to let go of Benny in the same day he was dealing with his 3rd or 4th feeling of Cas leaving THAT SEASON already, and that it might be on his mind when he says that, because he had to both push Benny away, and just can’t make Cas stay, so what’s the point of getting attached to him? Making Dean both the dump-er and dump-ee by the end of 8x10.

I dont understand why wishshipping isnt more popular, like honestly it has the most shippy moments in canon and theres even literally a scene where yugi says "joey i love you" and the anime dub cut it but the manga dub kept it and there was even an interview with the dubber talking about how the line absolutely definately was a thing that really existed in japanese and how important it was to keep it in the translation. Like in context its supposed to be a probably platonic "youre my most important person" thing but the language used is something very close to a romantic confession in japanese even if it wasnt intended to be one. And the early chapters actually had A LOT of moments of like..outright gay jokes about joey and yugi. Again, this is a series that doesnt exactly have ant positive lgbt rep and is terrible and sexist with its straight romance so its VERY unlikely they were canonically meant to be bisexual and canonically having shipping BUT there are a lot of moments that are huge shipping potential AND even literal 'lol look he gay' dialogue. Just like..in a negative 'funny' sense.

And just seriously yugi is so important to jonouchi, the anime cut down their backstory a lot but it was REALLY EMOTIONAL in the manga! Jounouchi used to be a sort of nihilistic bully who just did whatever he wanted because he needed to find some form of fun/outlet for his anger to deal with living in poverty, never seeing his sister, and his dad being an abusive parent. And him and yugi met when jou outright bullied yugi, it was so friggin uncomfortable and sad to be thrown into that as a first chapter when i was so used to him being such a supportive friend. He was just an immature bastard who made fun of the 'weird kid' and said it was because he couldnt stand looking at someone who seemed like..sensitive and honest about his feelings. It was a surprisingly complex motivation for how a not actually very bad dude would become a bully to a dude he like..actually admired and was jealous of, and he was just so wrapped up in his own pain without the words to really articulate why he felt that way. He felt like a 'real man' should be silent aboyt his feelings and never ask for help, and that friendship between men could only ever be non-emotional assholeness where you have to be the biggest jerk and do bullshit together and if you ever show a moment of weakness everyone will leave you. So we have this situation of yugi himself feeling like he's a wimp but to jou he looks like the biggest fuckin badass for being honest about his real self and being able to step outside toxic masculinity even if it means being alone. And it was just so goddamn emotional how the friendship started?? Like jounouchi was just being an immature petty sort of bully but then a more physically abusive bully comes along and attacks yugi, and jou gets attacked by the same guy in the process and theres SUCH A GOOD MOMENT!! Where jou sees yugi and is like "so youre working with this guy? So you sent him to get revenge on us right??" like he's so ready to believe that yugi is really just as bitter and petty as he is BUT also he sounds so outraged and betrayed about it, like he feels he was tricked into believing that good people actually exist. But then yugi runs forward and starts treating his wounds because of course he wasnt actually involved in it. And even more than that, he stands up to this dude who's ten times taller than him and even managed to defeat jounouchi! And he says its because jounouchi is his friend and he "wasnt bullying, he was just teaching me to be a real man". And HOLY SHIT the look on jou's face when he says that! Like he never even considered the sort of awful influence he could be causing on this poor dude's mental health by gaslighting him into thinking 'this is just how men are'. Like he'd got this image all twisted in his head of yugi being some spiteful taunting figure who's always 100% unswayable in his kindness and must only be that way because he doesnt have any real problems or something. And now he's faced with the reality that this dude's kindness is 100% real, so real that he'd risk his own safety to help someone who's been so cruel to him because he saw a spark of goodness in jounouchi's heart that jounouchi himself never saw. And the only thing that could shake that kindness was jounouchi's own words..he had to face how his 'harmless fun' was having consequences and how he came so close to crushing this dude's will and turning him into a bitter bastard just like him and it was BY BEING FRIENDS! the bullying wasnt even the worst part it was the dangling friendship over his head and promising youd care about him if he just jumped through all these hoops to become a hardenened 'real man'. Another hardened 'real man' who was really just a soft genuine man who'd been broken and learned to hide himself.

So yeah jounouchi gets a great redemption early on, and a lot of chapters dedicated to examining it in detail, showing his abusive father and the toxic friends who influenced him into being a toxic friend himself, and how some of them (tristan/honda) were also good people who were redeemable while others (the goddamn terrifying yo-yo gang guy) were straight up criminals that yugi fuckin knife fights to save him from. Theres a scene of jounouchi getting tazed and having glass thrown in his eyes and yugi + yami fuckin defeat a whole damn gang in the most badass way and then yugi embraces jou's unconcious body and he wakes up in his arms and screams his name in relief while hugging him as hard as he can with his partially paralyzed arms like HOLY SHIT TJAT WAS SO INTENSE

And seriously their friendship is already awesome cos jounouchi is a lot more openly affectionate and cuddly than most friendships between dudes in this series. (Hence the gay jokes in the manga...) But having the context of his first manga chapter makes it even sweeter because he used to be such a heavily repressed super macho man who feared even HAVING FRIENDS AT ALL despite desperately wanting them. It just feels like yugi sorta.. saved him?? Helped him recover from that and become more open with his true self. Its so nice to see him gradually becoming more adorable and cuddly as the series progresses, when the absence of that sort of stuff was his biggest problem causing his goddamn depression. And yugi even helps him reunite with his sister and be able to help her get surgery! Is it any wonder that jou is yugi's biggest cheerleader? Seriously when so much of the show seems to sideline yugi and focus on yami later on, its good to have this one dude reminding us that yugi rocks and specifically yugi's 'wimpyness' is actually a good thing nd his strongest strength and seriously!! Just!! Its so good!! Gahh, joey is a big buff scary dude who sees this sweet dude as THE BIGGEST BADASS who SAVED HIS GODDAMN LIFE and HIS MENTOR IN BECOMING SOFT ALSO! Jou has so much fuckin character development that was lost by shortening down this part of the story and only showing it in flashback form a bunch of episodes after the beginning instead of BEING the beginning yknow??

So yeah seriously this entire character arc is so good and this is why jounouchi is the best character and deserved to keep that kind of focus in the series instead of being degraded to more.of a comic relief role. And also this is why thier relationship has such a great foundation and could be even more resonant if it was romantic! Like srsly theres so many parallels here with the idea of a closeted dude that THE MANGA OUTRIGHT MAKES GAY JOKES ABOUT HIM ALREADY

Oh also the manga backstory also adds more nuance to jounouchi and kaiba's relationship because you could see it as jou becoming rivals with kaiba because he sees him as a mirror of the kind of repressed asshole he once used to be. Which is another reason why gay/bi/pan jounouchi just fuckin enhances everything about his entire plot and also the whole series ok yes.
