favorite part of both 911 shows is when one of the call dispatchers wrestled with the weight of their job. Not a lot of stories zero in on the difficulties of 911 call dispatch (even the best copaganda doesn’t pay it any mind lmao) so it’s always really interesting when you get that aspect - Maddie’s old lady rival and how much the dead end calls completely ruined her mental health, the way Maddie herself got triggered into an awful spiral when reminded of her own history of abuse during a call, May struggling at detaching her emotions from the situation while staying alert and kind, Josh & Sue looking after the callers and making sure they’re healthy, and i like seeing that carry over into Grace’s stories.
She was much more isolated in her role initially but having her new friend Dave, someone who is wildly different from her but just as committed & passionate about helping people, working through a health emergency bc someone is on the phone and needs his help. I like seeing Grace shook up by the SWAT-ting call, and the way Judd tells her it’s not her job to be suspicious. It ties into the overreaching theme both shows touch on when it comes to firefighting or being a paramedic - sometimes, you don’t get closure for something that scars you. You can’t get stuck or unsettled by it, because the next caller could be in the middle of the worst day of their life and they need you to be focused for them. Grace has to go out and find that closure on her own, it’s not something she can just expect and she’s aware of that. Bad shit just happens sometimes and they have to figure out on their own how to handle it.

Sociopath Profile: MCU Thanos
Tumblr media
Appearances: The Avengers (2012, cameo), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2014, cameo), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) Played by: Josh Brolin, Sean Gunn (motion capture), Damian Poirtier (2012)
While he isn’t exactly the perfect example of sociopathy with his genuinely good intentions and sympathetic characterization, there is no doubt made that what he is doing is absolutely ruthless. The Russo brothers described him as a “benevolent sociopath” and I can see that interpretation quite well while looking over his character once more.
[SPOILERS BELOW]
While he does have some empathy in the fact that he’s trying to help save the universe from itself, his methods come across as absolutely callous in nature. He plans mass genocide on a universal scale simply to help with the dwindling resources. He spent years searching for the Infinity Stones to finally achieve this and spent years slaughtering and conquesting to do it. All because he thought it would be helpful. He claims that it must be indifferent slaughter to be equal and balanced, but that also shows more of his callousness.
As you might imagine, anyone with a more sound mind might have thought of just maybe making more resources with the snap. However, this reflects another issue of his: his pride. He’s so convinced that he’s right about his plan after what happened on Titan that he cannot be swayed. He says that when he succeeds, he will watch the sun rise over a grateful universe. Even when his 2014 self comes to the present in Endgame and sees that people are still trying to fight, he deduces that the issue is that nobody is grateful as long as they know what is lost, so he decides to wipe out all life instead and restart from the ground up. It may seem that he just wanted to give an “I told you so” to the people of Titan for not listening to him and proving himself right.
This moves to another one of Thanos’ symptoms, his inability to accept blame. He does have some regrets for all the slaughter, but he believes it was all necessary to help the universe. This is his way of rationalizing his terrible actions. Convincing himself that he is doing the right thing. When people inevitably have a problem with what he does, he thinks that they’re ungrateful and not that he’s a borderline lunatic for thinking of such an idea.
It is exactly why he is able to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. He has no limits as to what he will do to ensure that his plan gets accomplished. While it is clear that the morality issue still has him plagued, he believes he is the only one with the will to see it through. What he fails to realize is that he’s the only one with the warped mindset to think of it in the first place.
He does have superficial charm and manipulative talents considering that he has so many followers working for him. Then again, the fact that many of them have tried to kill him or stab him in the back in some way might show that he’s not as good at it as he thinks he is. Nonetheless, he still doesn’t come off like the lunatic that everyone paints him as. The Mad Titan surely is mad in his beliefs and behavior, but not in his tone. He speaks calmly and rationally, but this may also be a sign of how warped his mindset is. He speaks calmly because he sees very little issue with what he does.
Above all, even after we see him taking a peaceful retirement, even destroying the stones to ensure he doesn’t use them again, he is still fully convinced that he did the right thing. Thanos does not waver in his convictions even a little bit. He does show some remorse for treating Nebula too harshly just before Thor lobs his head off, but that only comes after she commends his honesty, something that might just be feeding his ego. And his 2014 counterpart in Endgame shows that he never saw his years of mass-murder as personal, but said to Cap that he’d enjoy destroying his “stubborn, annoying little planet” for trying to undo his so-called good work.
While his heart may be in the right place, his mind definitely is not.

Overreacting
Fandom: 911
Pairing: father figure!Josh x reader
Word count: 748
requested by @bitweird1
A/N: hope you like this piece, love. It isn't too long but I gave my very best. lots of love 💖
Tumblr media
“Seriously, don’t you think you're overreacting?” you had your arms crossed over your chest and your eyebrows raised in Josh’s direction.
“Not at all” he answered almost instantly and then, seeing the annoyed expression taking a hold of your features, he rolled his eyes and sighted heavily. “Fine, maybe a bit. But can you blame me? You’ve just told me that all of sudden you’re dating some random dude”
“He’s not a 'random dude', he’s name is Mike and we have worked together at the hospital for quite a long time now. He’s great, you know” as you said so, you couldn’t help but find cute, Josh’s worry over you.
When you met him, a guy who stormed into the hospital you worked in with urgency in his eyes, you wouldn’t have been able to guess that he would become someone so important in your life. He had been there to see a person who had called the 911 for help and had been admitted later. You had taken him to see that someone and got to talk to the guy. He was nice, and in other times, when he went to see callers, you met up to talk again and again.
After a few months, your friendship became really tight. He was quite older than you and so, with all his advices, protective actions, you began to see him like the father figure you never had. Your father had left your mother when you were just a baby, so you had grown up with just one parent. To have Josh in your life… it was pretty amazing.
“Great, huh?” Josh’s expression wasn’t convinced at all and it made you laugh.
“Look, you can see for myself if he’s 'great' when we all have dinner this weekend, what do you think?” you suggested, giving him the 'puppy eyes' you knew he couldn’t go against.
“Better do it soon before you get engaged, right?” he crossed his arms over his own chest and averted his eyes from you, sighting again, but there was the ghost of a smile on his lips as he did so.
“You’re such a drama queen” you said and before he could say something about it, your phone ringed inside the front pocket of your jeans and getting it to see who it was, you sighted then placed it back where it had been. “It’s one of my patients, I’m being paged. Got to get back to the hospital” you got close to him, kissed his cheek and then began to walk away. Halfway through the hallway, you turned around and pointed at him with your right hand. “Dinner. This weekend”
“Deal” he said and you smiled before turning around and then walking out of the building. He was left smiling at himself, thinking about your sudden visit to his work and what you had just told him.
“You’re going to have to tell what that was all about” Maddie approached Josh moments after you left, genuine curiosity filling her eyes as she stared at him, looking for answers. When he frowned, she laughed. “I could see your disgusted face from across the room Josh”
Josh took a deep breath, knowing there would no point in trying to conceal the truth from Maddie. She knew him too well. “(Y/N) is dating” when he saw a big smile opening on her lips, he rolled his eyes. “Some guy from the hospital. Mike” he said the name like it was poison and Maddie laughed. “You should be my friend in this moment, not laugh at me”
“Oh, you didn’t really think (Y/N) would stay alone forever did you?” Josh gave her a typical protective parental look and she laughed once again before putting her hand on his shoulder. “It’s going to be fine, Josh. If this guy makes (Y/N) happy, that’s what matters. When are you meeting him?”
“This weekend. We’re all having dinner together” he uncrossed his arms and passed one of his hands on his hair for a brief moment. “I just… I worry. What if this guy breaks (Y/N)'s heart? What if…?” Maddie squeezed his shoulder and he sighted. “I’m overreacting”
“Yes, you are” Maddie smiled softly and motioned for him to come along. “Come on, we have work to do”
As Josh followed her, all he could think about what the upcoming weekend and the fact that he was going to meet your boyfriend. What a strange couple of days those would be.

A Good Thing
Fandom: 9-1-1
Seires: One shot
Pairing/s: Josh Russo x Reader
Characters: Reader, Josh, Maddie, Sue, Linda, Terry
Warning/s:
Word Count: kind short
Request:  @bitweird1
Summary: You and Josh finally have your coworkers over for a housewarming party
Gif credit: @bitweird1
Tumblr media
“I like the curtains,” you said as you stirred your morning coffee, your boyfriend Josh next to you preparing his own. He gave you a pointed look and you amended your statement, “okay well they aren’t the worst.” He sighed and rolled his eyes but you could see him smirking.
“They’ll do for now anyway, waking up with the sun sounds like a nice idea until the sun decides to make an appearance at 5 am.” He conceded and you both laughed. It had taken long enough to find an apartment you both liked, you hadn’t even considered how hard it would be to decorate it once you both moved in. You and Josh had been together for a little under a year, having met when you’d started at the call centre around the same time as Maddie, she’d actually played a little match maker to set the two of you up, apparently with the help of a considerable number of your nosy, but well meaning and friendly, collegues.
Speaking of nosy collegues, you noticed Linda approaching as you and Josh talked, a grin appearing on her face as she headed over.
“Morning,” you smiled back to greet her.
“Y/N, Josh, sorry to interupt but I couldn’t help but over hear you’ve finished decorating your new apartment.” She beamed, and you could already tell where this was going, and by the look on Josh’s face he did too.
“Oh you have,” Maddie appeared at the side, just arriving before shift. “Ah that’s fantastic.”
“Thanks, well it’s taken a while but we’ve finally got there.” Josh said.
“Aw I can’t believe you guys have moved in together, it’s a big step, but you both look happy.” Maddie squeezed your shoulders and went to put on a fresh pot of coffee.
“You should have a house warming party!” Linda declared and Maddie’s eyes lit up in agreement.
“Oh well I mean we’ve barely gotten the place together-” Josh tried but Maddie brushed him off.
“Exactly, we’ll all bring some food and wine, it’ll be great. Say 8 o’clock?” They had clearly already made up their minds.
“When you say all...” You dared to ask.
“Well everyone who can come of course, don’t you want to show off your new place?” Linda chimed in.
“It isn’t that big-” Josh tried yet again, stopping when he saw that the two ladies in front of you had already made up their minds, and instead said: “what kind of wine are we talking?” You laughed at how easily he caved, but you couldn’t blame him, it would actually be quite nice to show off the new place, especially given all the hard work you’d put into it.
“Only the best,” Maddie promised, and Linda went off to tell the others. You laughed in disbelief at how quickly your home was commandeered, Josh simply gave a shrug as if to say, what can we do?, and winked at you as he headed to work. You followed suit, unsure of what the night would bring.
________________________________________________________________
The good thing about having a newly bought and newly decorated apartment is that there was not much cleaning to do before guests arrived. Maddie and Linda obviously arrived first, bringing boxes of food and wine, Sue came next with some champagne, and Terry brought a giant chocolate cake, more arrived soon after with some dinner food and by the time 10 rolled around you were all sitting in the living room, some on cushions on the floor, full from dinner and discussing the worst calls you’d ever received.
“What kind of worst are we talking?” Linda asked as she opened a bottle of rose.
“It’s a housewarming party, let’s not kill the mood,” Josh suggested, “we must be talking outrageous, like when Y/N got that call about sending PD over to arrest a junkie’s imaginary friend.” The others laughed.
“Oh yeah, Jeffrey the man eating spider,” you told them, earning many shocked and amused faces.
“‘Jeffrey the man eating spider’?” Maddie asked, “god do I even want to know what he supposedly did?”
You took a glass of rose from Linda and continued the story, crossing your legs to get more comfortable on the floor, having given up your seat for Josh when the others came in and took his space on the couch. “Apparently he’d eaten this guys cat right, so I’m supposed to send cops over to arrest him for murder, and this dude made sure to tell me they’d need extra pairs of hand cuffs for all his legs.” Everyone burst out laughing.
“Aw that poor cat though,” Linda said, “what actually happened to it?” You were laughing a bit too much to answer so Josh did.
“Turns out the cat was also imaginary!” He said, nearly spilling his drink he was laughing so hard. All your worries about this housewarming were gone, why had you even been so worried?
Josh wiped a tear from his eye and stood up, giving your shoulder a squeeze. “I think dessert should be just about ready.”
“I’ll give you a hand,” Terry offered but you shook your head.
“Even though you guys all but invited yourselves, you’re our guests, I’ll help.” You said, putting your drink down and following Josh into the kitchen.
You grinned at him once you were out of the room. “This is going great, they even like what we’ve done with the apartment.” You said.
“They should,” he smiled, “we spent long enough deciding what to do with it.”
“That’s because you’re too picky,” you teased.
“It’s called having taste, some of us have it.” he snapped back, winking as he went to get the cake from the oven.
“Oh I know you have taste,” he replied, “you’re dating me aren’t you?” You both laughed, giving him a quick peck on the cheek as you went to grab some plates, unaware that the others could hear you from the living room.
________________________________________________________________
“Well, whoever thought it was a good idea to set those two up did an excellent job,” Maddie said, “not to toot my own horn or anything.”
“No you’re right, it’s almost annoying how good they are together.” Linda agreed, clinking her glass together with Maddie.
“Well I’m certainly glad it’s working out for them, maybe we’ll have a call centre wedding in the future,” Sue suggested as Josh headed in with some plates.
“Are my ears burning you guys?” He passed some of the plates out and you came out with the rest. “Almost sounded like you were talking about us.”
“Were they now?” You smirked.
“Just placing bets as to when the two of you’ll break up,” Maddie joked as you took your seats.
“Oh obviously,” you replied.
“But seriously though, I’m happy for you two,” she said sincerely.
You and Josh both looked at each other lovingly. “We are too.”

5. "Stop staring at him/her and just ask him/her out already"
Tumblr media
"So last night Chimney and I went to this cute little bistro downtown and - Josh are you even listening to me?"
"Yeah, yeah bistro you and Chimney being a lovey dovey couple," Josh responded, continuing looking at you working at your desk from where he and Maddie were sitting in the break room.
"Will you stop staring at him and just ask him out already," Maddie said playfully shaking her head.
"No way, Y/N just broke up his boyfriend a few weeks ago," Josh retorted.
"You've been ogling at him for a year and if you don't ask him out now he's going to be dating someone new before you know it," Maddie told him.
"I mean I guess I could ask him to drinks after work? That's not necessarily a date right? That way i can figure out if he's interested or not," Josh suggested trying to find a middle ground.
"Well he's coming over here so here's your chance," Maddie smiled as you walked by them.
"Hey guys," you nodded heading towards the refrigerator.
"Hey Y/N i was uh planning on going to the bar tonight after work if you're not doing anything maybe you can join me?" Josh asked nervously.
"I'd like that, I'll see you after work," you said grabbing your lunch from the fridge and going back to your desk.
"See that wasn't so hard now was it," Maddie teased Josh once you were gone.

Perfect Office Couple
Requested’  maybe one where the reader and Josh are dating (Like at the living together point) and the reader and Josh both work together as 911 operators (Like before Maddie started working there, like they started on the same day but it's after Maddie started
Tumblr media
“You seriously want to do this ?”  You asked as you sat up from the comfortable position you were currently sitting in and looked at your boyfriend of two years Josh.
He laughed down at you as he made you lay back down and put his hands on your head.
“Yeah why not.” I mean it would be pretty funny don’t you think?” He asked smiling down at you and you smiled back looking at the contagious smile he gave.
“Yeah i think it would be but why like what made you think of it.?” you asked, curious as anything because it was so random and you thought about the idea when he asked you and you thought it was pretty clever but you all you could think about was why ?
“I mean everything has been pretty tense lately after everything happened i thought it would be good to relieve some of the tension.”
You shrugged at his response and you didn’t disagree things have been pretty tense lately and you wanted to make things better.
So you agreed and the next Morning you both the plan in action and in the morning over your normal coffee and muffins for breakfast.
The car ride to work you were pretty excited. You didn’t speak much to each other and just sat there thinking about all the ways this could either be funny or not.
When you arrive at the call center you both usually hold hands and Josh walks you to your desk holding your stuff for you.
But this morning he didn’t. You didn’t do anything and both just sat there and didn’t say one word let alone look at each other.
It didn’t take long for your workers to notice. Especially Maddie and Sue. they gave each other worried glances and shrugged at each other.
Later on the day you both still not talking to each other and checking up on one another it made them even more nervous. They hope nothing horrible happened you were the office’s fave couple.
Finally when Josh got up to get some coffee Maddie thought enough was enough. And she got up and followed suit.
She slammed the door shut which made Josh Jump and he looked up with a mad looking face even though lets be honest didn’t even look like he was angry.
“What the hell is going on between the two of you and you better not lie either. It’s so obvious.” she said as she and Josh both sat down on the table and she looked up with those caring eyes that made it hard to lie.
“We broke up no big deal things just didn’t work out.” He said taking a drink of coffee.
Maddie didn’t want to press even further and upset him and instead just took his hand
“I’m Here if you wanna talk.” She said getting up and giving it a squeeze.
Josh instantly felt bad and didn’t want to push off his secret plan even further, this plan you had no idea about either.
As he was leaving, he looked up to see You Maddie and Sue in a conversation which seemed pretty tense.
He knew it had to be soon and it was perfect because shift change was coming up.
The whole day he heard the office chatter and tried not laugh because everyone in the office automatically took your side.
At the end of shift Josh was ready to put his plan into action he looked up to see you walking over to him with the whispers of the office. He knew you were ready to tell everyone it was a secret.
As you walked over you could see Josh got pretty nervous you wasn’t sure what he was nervous about.
Finally when you reached him Josh smiled and got up from his desk and took your hand in his and at the point everyone who wasn’t on a call had all eyes on you and you almost said something when he cut you off.
I know were we just joking around today and yes everyone it was a joke.( he raised his voice on that part to everyone could hear.) We played you all it was a joke but it really upset me today more than i thought it would and I don't ever want us to fight again and I don't want to be apart from you ever again. I have loved every two years of us together and never want us to be apart and you are my life. Will you Marry Me ?”  He asked you getting down on one knee and pulled a ring out his pocket he was saving for the right moment.
“Yes Of course Josh I love you.” you said and he got back up put the ring on your finger.
He picked you up and spun you around. And the whole office cheered.
Maddie and Sue walked over and Maddie punched Josh Playfully on the arm.
“Don’t you ever pull something like that again and not tell us we were freaked.” She said and pulled him into a hug.
Sue hugged you as well and told you “Don’t ever scare us like that again you two are the office couple and we need some kind of joy around here.”
You laughed and all 4 made plans to go out and celebrate. You knew it was going to be a good day but not this great.

Mornings with Josh Russo
Tumblr media
I was just wondering if you take requests?❤ and if so would you be willing to take a request for Josh Russo from 9-1-1?❤ -bitweird1
Mornings weren't one of your favorite things especially on the weekend. You preferred to use your days off to sleep in and wake up at noon.
He knows that, but he also knows you'll stay up until 4 in the morning for the next couple of days and you'll be dead tired when you have to go into work Monday morning.
So he quietly climbs out of bed once the clock hits 9:30, freezing when there’s a pause in your soft snores, quickly grabbing a pillow and putting it in your arms when you roll over and wrap your arms where his body should be.
Once he’s fully out of bed he quickly leaves the room, careful to avoid the creaky spot in the floor as he makes his way to the kitchen to make a quick breakfast.
On his way back into the room, now carrying a tray with a big plate full of eggs, bacon, and toast along with two cups of coffee both made to perfection, he cant help but smile at the weird position you managed to get yourself in in the short time he was gone.
He watched for a couple seconds, the soft snores leaving your lips music to his ears. It almost makes him regret what he’s about to do next.
Setting the tray on the dresser, he stands up straight before turning and slamming the bedroom door, making you shoot up.
It takes you a couple second to figure out nothing happened, before you look at the clock and fall back onto the bed groaning as you pull the blanket over your face.
“NOOO. I want to sleep.” “Tough luck Love. Come on I made breakfast.” “Coffee?” “Always.”
He smiles when your hand snakes out of the blanket, grabbing the cup from him as you sit up.
The two of you quietly eat, you leaning against him unable to sit up on your own in your half asleep state.
When you both finish eating Josh sets the tray aside before pulling you out of bed, making you stretch at the sudden movement of your limbs.
He softly grabs your hands, leading you to the bathroom. He quickly turns on the shower before turning and gesturing for you to undress. You slowly follow his directions before climbing into the shower, him following you.
The two of you stand under the water, your head on his shoulder, his arms around your waist, as the two of you stand there letting the warm water fall over you both.
“Come on, as nice as this is, we don’t need to raise the water bill.”
You’re quick to grab the shampoo and start washing his hair, him closing his eyes in content as you scratch at his head.
You both finish washing up before climbing out and getting dressed.
After you brush out your hair you feel arms wrap around your waist, making you look at him through the bathroom mirror.
“What?” ?Nothing.”
He’s quick to kiss your cheek before leaving the bathroom, leaving you to fight the nest on your head alone.
When you walk out to the living room you find Josh putting on his shoes. When he stands up he grabs your, handing them to you.
“You ready to start the day now?” “Can we take a nap first?”

“You don’t have to be embarrassed. I like you and I want to  get to know you better.” Josh reassured.
You smiled softly, “Thank you. It hasn’t been easy telling people. It means a lot that you don’t mind it. It’s a part of who I am and I’m glad you accept me for who I am.”
“Of course.”

9-1-1: Josh Russo
Tumblr media
@bitweird1 requested: “Thx!❤ Could you do one where the reader works with him as a 911 operator and they aren't dating but they both like eachother and the reader gets hurt or is in a dangerous situation and has to call 911 and Maddie is the 911 operator that answers and Maddie has to tell Josh and he gets worried but the reader's ok in the end and she only has a few scratches?❤🥰❤ (And I'm Bi too!, sorry I just wanted to add that in there😂) (Not to the request but the ask)”
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?” The familiar voice of your coworker, Maddie, met your ears and you breathed out a sigh of relief. That question, one that you repeated on auto-pilot again and again and again each day, never bothered you. Neither did Maddie’s voice; it was actually comforting and calming, a much welcomed sound in the middle of a hectic day or at the end of a painful call. But now? Now that was the last thing you wanted to hear, the last question and voice you wanted to hear. You just wanted to get from the bank to work in one piece and go about your day as normal, you didn’t want your day to be thrown off track and deal with all of this stress.
“Maddie? Oh, thank God! It’s me, it’s (Y/N). I’ve been in a car accident, I don’t think it’s too serious, I can still feel my toes and wiggle them. I’m too scared to look down, my arm is covered in blood and—“ You rushed out in a quick breath, unable to look down at yourself for a second time after seeing blood in the first glance. Looking out the hole where your window to your left should be at the red pickup truck that hit you and the enraged man stepping out of the driver’s seat, your heart rate picked up and you couldn’t seem to bring in enough air to your lungs. You hoped he would focus on himself and his car and leave you alone to wait for help. “I’m on the corner of South Azure Avenue and Pepperbrook Way.”
“I’ve dispatched the 118 to you, hang in there, Buck will be there soon. Oh, and I’ll tell Josh,” Maddie informed you, hoping her brother would be a familiar face to help you calm down. She was right, knowing Buck and the other team members of the 118 would be the ones to find you and help you put you at ease. It was easier to talk to and be treated by familiar faces, your best friend’s brother would surely crack a joke or two to take your mind off of this crappy situation. But on the other side, the thought of Josh made your stomach flip, made you worry about what he would say or do. You didn’t want to hear a “why are you telling me?” on the other end of the line.
“Tell Josh what?” He asked in passing, conveniently always right where he needed to be. With a look over Maddie’s shoulder at the screen, he was able to scan the information and recognize your personal cell phone number. He nodded slowly to himself, his brain taking a few seconds to truly process the information he saw: your name, your phone number, car accident, driver injured. He stilled, breath catching in his throat and fingers tightly gripping the back of Maddie’s chair. He was already moving, on his way out the door when he shot a glance over his shoulder to Maddie. “I’m taking my lunch break,” he said, sounding distant and distracted.
She knew, Maddie knew everything around the office, but mostly because she was good friends with both you and Josh. She knew about the crushes you were both harboring for one another but wouldn’t act on because he was your superior and that was frowned upon, no matter how professional you two would be at work. She was sick of hearing both of you say some version of that, sick of the excuses you both came up with to justify putting off the inevitable and hiding the truth. You knew how important it was to separate your home and work lives, every first responder did; it was what you had to do to survive the job. It wasn’t like two 9-1-1 dispatchers would face the same problems as two officers or firefighters in a relationship in the same job.
You couldn’t bring yourself to get out of your car, even though you knew your neck and spine and head were okay, not until after Hen and Chim poked and prodded you to give you the all clear. The questions, the pressure to various parts of your body, and the bright light shining in your eyes were nothing to you, you barely noticed it when you were too occupied thinking about Josh. He was probably going about work as normal, you’d see him in a day or two when you went back. Buck lead you to the ambulance where he sat with you while Hen cleaned and bandaged the cuts on your arms and chest from the shattered window and you thanked every higher being and star in the sky that no glass got stuck in you. The cleaning solution hurt worse than the impact, now that the adrenaline was wearing off and you were aware of all that was happening.
Meanwhile, Josh was stuck behind some woman at the nearest stoplight who was texting instead of paying attention to the light, causing him to curse loudly and he slammed his palm against the center of the steering wheel to honk the horn. His knuckles turned white while he drove, his grip tightening as his mind raced with thoughts about you. What happened? Were you okay? What if the worst happened? That was normal, normal things to think and worry about in regards to a coworker, nothing more. It was friendly concern and friendly racing to an accident scene to check on you. Normal. Friendly.
Buck’s jokes were met with half-hearted laughs and distracted nods, not that he noticed because he was laughing at his own jokes like they were the funniest thing he heard. Hen laughed, too, not because the jokes were funny but because Buck was kind of her friend and she wanted to be supportive. Okay, it’s because his jokes were so awful that it was impossible not to laugh at. Buck and Hen bowed out with a pat on the leg and a friendly smile when Josh showed up, barely remembering to put his car in park as he pulled up to the scene. He had to resist the urge to pull you into his arms, to hug you, to make sure you were safe and you had to resist the urge to get up, to fall into him, to hold him close until you forgot your morning trip to the bank. You and him had been dancing around each other for too long, even Carrie from accounting and Joe the janitor would roll their eyes at you two when they caught an almost intimate but utterly awkward encounter.
“Maddie told me you got in an accident, I had to… I had the afternoon off so I thought I’d stop by to check on you,” he lied as he took a cautious step closer and suddenly you could see everything Maddie told you, everything you couldn’t see, no, refused to see, before. You could tell when he was lying, knew his voice and ticks from his calls when he tried to reassure people things would be okay when they clearly wouldn’t be. And… Screw it. Now was as good of a time as any to take a leap of faith, to take a risk and reap the rewards. It wouldn’t be easy but it helped to still have post-car accident adrenaline coursing through your veins making you feel like maybe, just maybe, everything would work out.
“I’m fine, just a few little scratches. No stitches, no broken bones,” you reassured him with a warm smile as you got up from your spot sitting on the edge of the ambulance. Holding up your arms to show the few bandages, you proved that you were truly okay. You boldly took a step forward to get closer to him, to close the respectful work colleague gap in favor of breaching into the I-want-more zone. “Since you have the afternoon off,” you began, a hint of sarcasm and knowing to your voice, before adding on, “let’s go to lunch. A date.”
“Will I get a kiss at the end?” Josh asked with a wide grin and a suggestive eyebrow wiggle. He offered his hand, which you gladly took, and led you away from the accident scene. Or a few feet away from the ambulance, which allowed Hen and Chim to clean up and pack up their gear. The other paramedics across the street were dealing with the angry man, having a much less pleasant time than anyone else. You felt bad for them, knew their job was hard enough without the difficult, whiny assholes yelling and waving their arms around.
“Only if you take me home,” you answered, happy to finally be going on a date with the man you had spent too much time staring at from afar. The nights in bed spent thinking about break room conversations and morning walks in when you happened to park next to one another. The pre-planned conversations and moments you rehearsed saying “good morning, Josh” in the mirror no one would ever know about. You were stopped by a woman who came to stand in front of you, block you from leaving. “I was hoping to do this later,” you offered up hopefully only to be met with an amused laugh.
“Uh-uh, honey, no special treatment. You have to answer questions, fill out your report,” Sargeant Athena Grant said and you groaned in response, reminding her of the times she would tell her teenage daughter no and be met with an attitude. You knew you would have to fill out an accident report, answer questions but you hoped you could go to the station after lunch or later in the day. Anytime other than now when you were about to finally go on a date with Josh. You were so close! At least Athena had the decency to look a little guilty from pulling you away at the worst time to take care of the worst paperwork after the worst morning.
“Go, I’ll wait for you,” Josh promised, grateful to take a minute to call into work to take the rest of the day off. He didn’t even have to come up with a lie, everyone in the office was so happy that you two finally made a move. The betting pool, after way too long, finally closed and the one patient winner was thrilled to win the whole pot. Yeah, Maddie was the worst friend for getting $300 richer betting on your love life. And if Maddie greeted you the next day with a knowing grin and nudge, you couldn’t bring yourself to mind one bit. Especially not when you caught Josh smiling at you from his desk.

Firefighter Diaz, do you copy? Did you make it to room 318? There is no 318. It's gone, the fire took it.
Image ID: Claudette is in shock after she learns her caller died. Josh leans over her shoulder as he says, “I think you need to take five.” Claudette doesn’t look at Josh as she replies, “I’m fine.” Josh replies, “Take it anyway.”

Okay this is random, but I just remembered I had a dream where I was on a speeding boat with no way of stopping it with Josh and Maddie. So essentially the plot of Speed 2. Very weird, especially since I have the most vivid dreams.
