Movie poster by Josef Fenneker for the 1930 Austrian release of the Universal Pictures film Der Jazzkönig. The film was a revue, along the lines of a vaudeville or stage production, featuring Paul White and his orchestra performing musical numbers with comedic sketches in between. The movie was filmed in Technicolor, and had the very first animated cartoon filmed in that process.

This is the poster for another film starring “Die Asta” (they say she was so popular in Germany, everybody just called her by her first name), an adaptation of August Stridberg’s play, Fräulein Julie (Miss Julie). The prolific Josef Fenneker (1895-1956) designed this poster. Fräulein Julie opened in Berlin on February 2, 1922, 102 years ago today. Sadly, it seems that the Fräulein Julie film is lost today.
