Maybe it's because I was a PBS kid and the Jekyll and Hyde episodes of Wishbone and Arthur stood out to me more than the Frankenstein one, but I was floored when I got to school, made friends, and realized that Jekyll WASN'T the iconic mad scientist in pop culture.

Where are my fellow Gothic Fiction fans? Surely some of you ended up in here somewhere. Come out I need you.
Tumblr media
I want to draw them more, please feel free to suggest scenarios. I feel like they need to interact. Let the fanfiction begin!
I even made a reference sheet for them and everything. I just need to practise some more. Let’s just pretend they’re my OCs.
Edit: there are now more doodles. Find them under the #Sariel's Victorian disaster men tag

Actually one of my favorite bits of horror trivia is that the portrayal of Dr. Jekyll as a feeble twink and Mr. Hyde as a bulky hunk is completely reversed. Henry Jekyll is sturdy and "well built," and Edward Hyde is teeny. Noticably short. There's even a lore reason for it too. As a metaphor for the nature of the soul, Henry is "good", he's spent his life building on his strong moral fiber, whereas Mr. Hyde is his desire to do harm and be indulgently evil, a desire that's been neglected and withered in his upstanding life thus far. There's some really strong design choices in classic horror that have really never been effectively translated visually

This widely censored scene includes a single undraped shot, lasting perhaps five seconds, of Miriam Hopkins as Ivy getting into bed during her first meeting with Jekyll. The infamous scene, missing even from the restored Turner Classics version on VHS, is fully restored in the DVD release. When it was re-released in 1936, the Code required 8 minutes to be removed before the film could be distributed to theaters.
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, 1931 directed by Rouben Mamoulian
