Forbidden Paradise / Pola Negri as Catherine (the Czarina)
As befits royalty, Catherine wears a succession of sumptuous gowns in this film. The top photo shows her in a sleek gown with extravagant sleeves, a furry muff, and a crown-and-veil combo that made me think it was a wedding dress at first.
The ermine-trimmed gown in the middle photo is probably the most lavish of the lot. The skirt looks like it's covered in tiny pearl necklaces! The cut is a robe de style, with visible panniers supporting the skirt.
Finally, the bottom photo shows Her Majesty in a rather gothy gown with a full skirt. Looks like it might be made of velvet.
This is one of Ernst Lubitsch's early silent films--you can see him with Pola Negri in the bottom photo. The middle picture shows Negri with Adolphe Menjou as the Chancellor. This movie is available on YouTube, but unfortunately, the subtitles are only in Czech.
