prompt: R agrees to be Tobin’s fake date to a wedding, but they end up actually getting together by the end.
warnings: none
words: 1766
(Y/N) POV
“So, why do you think I’ll be able to go?” I asked Tobin.
“Do you have plans for the weekend?” Tobin asked.
“Well, no, but that doesn’t mean that I want to go to a wedding,” I pointed out. It was exactly fair that she was asking me to go a day before the wedding. “I don’t have really anything to wear either.”
“You could wear anything and you would still look gorgeous.”
“Tobin. Not now.”
Tobin sighed as she ran a hand through her hair. I rubbed at my nose before sighing.
“You’ll pick me up?” I asked. Tobin looked up at me. “Tomorrow, you’re going to pick me up?”
“Yeah,” Tobin nodded. I nodded as well. I guess it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I went with Tobin. “And if anyone asks-”
“I’m your date,” I said. Tobin nodded at that. “Why did you tell people you had a date?”
“Because I didn’t think it through.”
“Do you ever?”
“Ouch.”
I sent Tobin a grin. I knew that she hadn’t really taken offence to the comment. She shook her head at me as she grabbed at her heart and fell back onto my couch.
“Okay, okay, stop pretending, Tobi.”
“You know I hate that nickname.”
I rolled my eyes at that as the forward looked up at me from her spot on the couch. I had been using the nickname forever now and I knew that Tobin really didn’t mind the nickname like she claimed.
“What time are you going to pick me up?”
“6?”
“You don’t know?”
“6.”
I squinted at the forward. I wasn’t sure how much I trusted her to keep to that time. Tobin only gave me a smile in response though.
“If you’re late, I’m not going,” I warned her.
“I won’t be late, I promise.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Can you stop glaring at me?”
“You were late, Tobin.”
The forward only shot me a small smile as I shook my head at her. I couldn’t really believe that I had still decided to come.
“I can’t believe that you didn’t tell me it was Jeffrey’s wedding either,” I hissed at her. I had no idea that it was her little brother’s wedding we were going to be going to. “It would have been a nice piece of information to have for when I agreed to come with you.”
“Okay, yes, I should have told you,” Tobin relented. “But I needed a date.”
“I can’t believe I even agreed to go on a fake date with you,” I said as I shook my head. After all, Tobin’s family knew me quite well. I had often spent time with Tobin’s family over the years. “You know I can never show my face to another Heath family function without us either pretending to be a couple or everyone asking me why we broke up.”
“You can’t tell them.”
“For how long?” I asked. Tobin shook her head at that. “No. No way, Tobin. Your mom will call me the second you tell her we broke up and she will be so upset. I swear if we never tell her that this is a fake date, I am going to cry.”
“You can’t tell them,” Tobin denied. I shook my head at that. “We can just pretend to be dating when you want to come to the family stuff.”
“Tobin,” I whined.
“I’m not telling them that I didn’t get a date for the wedding,” Tobin shook her head. I crossed my arms in frustration. “They’ll never know and you can still come to the Heath family functions. I promise.”
“I really don’t like this idea,” I said.
“It’ll be fine, (Y/N). My parents love you and so do my siblings.”
That wasn’t what I was worried about though. It didn’t take us much longer to get to the venue. We were a little early as Tobin was part of the family. I sighed as I followed Tobin before she held the door open for me. I walked in before slowing down so that Tobin could catch up to me.
Tobin sent me a small smile as she wrapped her arm around my shoulder. I shook my head at the action, but I didn’t make a move to remove her arm. The two of us soon found Tobin’s parents.
“Tobin,” Cindy greeted. She looked a little surprised when she saw me. “And (Y/N).”
“Hi, Mrs. Heath,” I said with a small smile.
“Oh, (Y/N), dear, you know you can call me Cindy.”
“I always forget.”
She gave me a small hug before Jeff also hugged me. I wasn’t too surprised when Tobin began to talk with her parents as Perry joined me.
“You look amazing,” Perry said as she hugged me. “I’m happy Tobin finally asked you out. She hasn’t stopped talking about you since you two met in college. It’s been so obvious how she feels about you since then.”
I pulled back from Perry in surprise. But I didn’t have time to ask her what she meant as Tobin joined us.
“Hey, Perry,” Tobin greeted her sister.
“Tobin,” Perry said as she pulled her sister in for a hug.
“So, how excited is Jeffrey?” I asked. I was a bit curious. I knew that he had gotten engaged, but I hadn’t heard much more after that.
“He’s absolutely in love with her,” Cindy said. I smiled at that because it was always good to hear. “We were so happy when he proposed. Now we’re just waiting on Tobin to propose.”
I turned to look at Tobin with my brow raised.
“Yeah, when do you plan to propose?” I asked Tobin.
It didn’t escape my notice of how the tips of her ears suddenly went red, but I decided not to comment on it. Tobin shrugged as she put her hands in her pockets.
“Maybe when you will finally come play for the same club as me.”
I shook my head at that. I knew that Tobin and I really never did play together outside of the national team. We hadn’t played together in college as Tobin played at UNC and I was at Stanford. Even though we had grown close due to the time we played together with the national team, we had yet to play for the same club.
“You’re the one who decided to go play for Man United when you came over to England. I tried to get you to come to Arsenal, but noooooo the life long Gunner didn’t want to,” I pointed out. Tobin only rubbed the back of her neck at that. “How about you leave Man United and come play for Arsenal?”
“You know, I just might.”
I smiled softly at that. I would love to get to play with Tobin for the same club. It was something that the two of us would have to do before we both retired.
We all made some small talk before Tobin’s parents went to go talk to some of the guests. I wasn’t too surprised when Katie even joined us. We continued to make small talk with Tobin’s family and even some of the guests. It wasn’t long though until the ceremony started or even until it ended before we were headed for the reception.
I wasn’t too surprised when Tobin was pulled for pictures. It didn’t take as long as I had thought as Tobin and her family joined our table again. We continued to make small talk throughout the night and I even enjoyed my time dancing with Tobin. I had finally gotten my chance to talk to Perry alone when Tobin told me she was going to go to the bathroom.
“Hey, Perry,” I said causing her to turn to look at me. “Tobin’s been talking about me since college?”
“Everyone can see it. She came home and she couldn’t stop talking about the midfielder who had given her the worst amount of trouble,” Perry admitted. I shook my head at that because no one had ever told me. “We could all tell that she had a crush on you after that. But it wasn’t until you guys had your first national camp together that we realized she loved you. It didn’t take her long to actually tell us that she loved you. But she made us promise not to say anything to you.”
“I never knew that.”
“Of course not,” Perry shook her head. “You two were always both so oblivious to each other’s feelings. We had bets on who would admit it to the other first. So, was it you or Tobin?”
I lifted my head as I spotted Tobin headed toward us.
“Remind me to tell you about it later,” I said to her as I was already making my way toward Tobin.
I grabbed a hold of Tobin’s arm once I got close enough. I pulled her with me as I headed out of the venue. I knew that it would be no problem for us to get back in and I really just wanted to go outside for this conversation.
“(Y/N), what’s going on?” Tobin asked softly once I stopped pulling her with me. “Did Perry say something? Do you want me to take you home?”
“You never told me,” I said. Tobin furrowed her brow in confusion. “That you’ve been in love with me since that first camp.”
“Oh, I- um, you see,” Tobin stuttered. I shook my head at it. “Look, I can take you home and you can forget about all of-”
I cut Tobin off as I grabbed a hold of her shirt before pulling her forward as I crashed my lips against hers. I almost pulled away before Tobin kissed me back. I rested my forehead against Tobin’s once we did pull back from each other.
“You should have said something.”
“You just kissed me,” Tobin said. She let out a soft chuckle as she pulled her forehead away from mine. I watched as she pinched herself. “I’m not dreaming that you kissed me?”
“I could always kiss you again if you wanted.”
Tobin looked up at me in surprise.
“You should have told me, Tobin. God, Perry was right,” I said as I shook my head.
“So, does this mean that tonight wasn’t a total lie?”
“I guess that depends on if you ask me to be your girlfriend or not.”
“Going back to the age-old Nature vs Nurture debate, a good way to think about it is that genetics provide an individual with a spectrum and the individual’s environment, developmental and otherwise, determines where you lie on it. A predisposition may lie dormant for eternity, but feed it a stressful environment and increased risk factors such as malnourishment and trauma, and it will manifest. Clinical facts must be tempered with ethical concerns when applying science to society.” Source
“Dead Man's Hand” (The Lives of Dax)
Jeffrey Lang
During the Romulan War, Tobin, an engineer and passanger [sic] aboard a pre-Federation Earth transport, must help to keep the vessel out of Romulan hands.
Jeffrey [Lang] remembered, “I'll never forget the phone call I got from Marco [Palmieri, editor of The Lives of Dax anthology]. I was working on Immortal Coil (this is pre-Abyss), and he said, ‘You want to write a story for this anthology?’ And I said, ‘Sure.’ And that was it. I felt like such a grown-up writerly fellow. He said, ‘Go read your Star Trek Encyclopedia, figure out which Dax you want to write about and get back to me.’ Two things about Tobin stood out for me: 1) He was alive during the Romulan War and I thought that would be a good era in which to set a story; 2) He was kind of a nebbishy guy. I think in my outline, I wrote something like, ‘He's the Woody Allen of the Dax incarnations.’”
Marco said, “That hooked me. Not because I'm a big Woody Allen fan, but because it vividly conveyed a personality type that I wasn't expecting.”
Jeff went on, “From there it was just a matter of figuring out what the heck he was doing in space and why the Romulans would want his ship. Fortunately, Enterprise hadn't come on yet and ruined my chance to write the origin and first use of a transporter. I forget who decided the ship would have Vulcans on it, but I know I immediately jumped at the idea of putting Spock's grandfather on board. It's pretty understated. At the time of the story. Sarek hadn't even been born yet, and the only onscreen reference to Skon was a quick mention in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. So there's no obvious connection to Spock unless you recognize the character's name. Again, there are a couple of Marco-isms in the story, the notable one being the bit near the end where Skon suggests the idea of a modular design for future spaceships, so they can separate it if need be. I love that bit.”
esme kapoor && everett caine, our (mina murray && jonathan harker), are looking for their abraham van helsing [either everett’s godfather OR esme’s father/uncle/godfather]. they look like anthony hopkins, costas mandylor, ed harris, hugh jackman, jason isaacs, jeffrey wright, mads mikkelsen, tobin bell, zahn mcclarnon, utp and have the age range of 55+. in the fairytale world, jonathan became a vampire hunter so we thought it would be cool if van helsing took on a more literal parental role in enchanted falls! the playerdoes not require you to contact them before applying. esme kapoor, our (mina murray), is looking for their lucy westenra [childhood best friend]. they look like abbey lee kershaw, cemre baysel, laura harrier, lydia west, maggie geha, margot robbie, phoebe dynevor, samara weaving, shay mitchell, sydney sweeney, utp and have the age range of 23-31. [lucy] and esme grew up together and were the best of friends until esme’s accident. while [lucy] and everett were some of the only people esme really stayed in touch with, eventually [lucy] and esme started to drift due to differing lifestyles. lucy is kind of a party girl archetype, and since talia (esme’s current best friend) is a lounge singer, i thought it would be fun to have talia and esme met through esme trying to reconnect with [lucy] and now [lucy] is somewhat the third wheel. the playerdoes not require you to contact them before applying. A group of small-town teens target an elderly wealthy woman (Lin Shaye) with a sinister past. When one of their increasingly vicious pranks leads to her death, she leaves them a mysterious request in her will. To collect their $100,000 inheritance, each teen needs to make a single phone call as penance. What, at first, seems like a simple task quickly spirals into terror as completing it will require them to confront their demons both past and present.
Prompt: Tobin Heath gets over protective of R during the holidays when Tobin finds out that R had a girlfriend (sorry in advance for the tears). Christen steps in and helps. Some Thorns show up for comic relief. Got some Pinoe and Harry too. There is brief mention of suicide.
(Y/N) POV:
“Do you want to join me for morning yoga and meditation?” Christen says pulling me out of my trance.
She pulls out some yoga mats and goes through her routine. I follow along doing the best I can. I do yoga for recovery, but never really for relaxation. After stretching out what seems to be every muscle in my body, Christen finally breaks the silence.
“I usually meditate for five to ten minutes now,” she says. “But you can meditate for however long you want.”
I lay down and close my eyes and just take deep breaths. I think about everything that has happened in the past year. I got called up to the USWNT and now I play with my sister and all of her closest friends. Both of my dogs died, my girlfriend died, and we qualified for the world cup. So much has happened and I have been bottling it up. At first, I was talking to people about everything but it got hard. I don’t connect well with anyone on the national team and I am away from school so much that I don’t have any friends there. I feel bad for shutting my family out, but it so hard to connect to them because I am so young. My family tries to understand me, but I am so much different from all of them. I am the most like Jeffrey and Tobin, but it is still hard for us to connect. Tobin tries so hard, but she gets busy with soccer and living in different time zones does not help. I don’t think any of them even know that I had a girlfriend. Let alone that she died.
“Are you okay?” Christen asks interrupting my thoughts.
I open my eyes to see her staring at me with concern.
“Why are you crying?” she asks me. I didn’t even know that I was crying. She pulls me into a hug and lets me cry into her shoulder. Once I’ve calmed down I pull away. “You don’t have to talk about it if you aren’t ready. But you can always talk to me and you can always talk to Tobin.”
“I’m not ready right now,” I tell her. “But maybe later.”
“That’s fine,” she says. “Do you want something to eat or do you want to wait for Tobin to wake up?”
“I’ll wait for Tobin,” I say. “She gets a little cranky when we don’t wait for her to wake up. I can’t eat this early anyways. I’m going to go outside and call my friend.”
Tobin’s POV:
I wake up to kisses being placed up my back.
“Mmm Chris,” I moan. “What time is it?”
“We need to get some food going,” she says. “And I think you should talk to (Y/N).”
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“I don’t know,” Chris says. “We did yoga this morning and she started crying. She said she wasn’t ready to talk about it but, I think she will open up to you.”
“Yeah where is she at?”
“Outside. It’s been awhile. She said she was going to talk to her friend, but I think she is done now. Also take some food she said she wanted to wait for you to eat.”
I go into the kitchen and make us both a bowl of cereal. I go out to the back porch and find (Y/N) drawing in her sketchbook. I set the bowl in her lap and she starts eating. After a while I realize she is staring at me.
“I had a girlfriend,” (Y/N) says.
“Had?”
“She died at the end of August. I don’t know if mom told you. She had cancer. After a while, it became too much and she didn’t want treatment anymore. I spent all my time with her after Tournament of Nations. We knew that even if she did treatment I wouldn’t get to see her much because she wouldn’t be able to come to school much and I would be busy with qualifiers. I just wasn’t expecting it to be so soon.”
“How long were you guys together?”
“Two years. I know we are young, but I saw myself being with her the rest of our lives. I’ve never wanted children, but I could see myself of kids with her. I think she saw the same thing. It just sucks that she died before she could turn 18.”
“It’s not crazy to fall in love so young.”
“No, but no one really understood. No one our age is in serious relationships like this. Her family understood it though. God, I feel so bad for her family. They have to go through their first holidays without their oldest. And I feel so bad for Peyton. Today is her birthday and all she can think about is how her sister isn’t here.”
“(Y/N), listen to me. You are allowed to be emotional. You are allowed to mourn. These are your first holidays without her too. You have to deal with the love of your life dying before you were old enough to get married. Don’t invalidate your emotions.”
“I didn’t deserve her. I put her through some shit. I don’t deserve for her to love me.”
“(Y/N) look at me. I don’t want you to ever say that again. You absolutely deserve the love she gave you. Every relationship goes through tough times. Everybody goes through tough times in their life. Just because you tried to end it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve love. So many people love you unconditionally. I know you don’t always see your self-worth, but we all do. Every person who is coming over today, everyone on the national team, we all love you (Y/N).”
“I love you guys too.”
“I know it is hard for you to talk about these things, but we are all willing to listen.”
“I’m sorry I have been shutting everyone out.”
“It’s fine it’s something you have to work on. But you opened up today. You didn’t have to tell me about this, but you did.”
The door opens and Christen comes out.
“Megan and Sue are here. And so is Emily and Lindsey. Everyone else should be here soon so you guys should come in and get ready so they don’t get impatient.”
“Thanks for sending Tobin out here,” (Y/N) tells Chris. “And thanks for not forcing me to talk earlier.”
“No problem kid,” Chris tells (Y/N).
(Y/N) gets up and hugs Chris and then hugs me.
“I know I don’t say this often and I probably don’t show it well, but I love you guys and I don’t know where I would be without you guys,” (Y/N) says.
“Stop being such a sap (Y/N) and go get dressed,” I tell her.
A little while later I am helping Chris in the kitchen enjoying the sounds coming from the living room. Lindsey and Emily are fighting with the Aussies about who was supposed to bring the dinner rolls. Sinc and Harry are mad because (Y/N) keeps beating them at Mario Kart (“Harry! Baby Harry cheats, just like you!” “I can’t believe I said you are my favorite Heath?”). Pinoe and Sue are out back playing a game of pick up with the rest of the Thorns who are in town.
