Chapter 1 - The Journey

“You know of my wife’s… illness, I assume,” Ray started.
Alex frowned. Of course he knew. Everyone knew. But what did that have to do with his friend?
He nodded.
“There is not a single remedy known in my kingdom that could help her condition,” the King explained. “They only ever lessen symptoms, but there is nothing that could cure her of the causes.” Something heavy and uncomfortable settled in Alex’s stomach like it always did when people talked about the Queen’s condition. She was so loved by everyone, most of all her family and the family’s friends, to which Alex proudly belonged.
“I am really sorry to hear that,” Alex felt the need to say, despite them both knowing that Alex already knew.
Ray nodded in thanks. He swallowed. “Willie approached me the other day. He was very anxious, that was obvious, but they told me about a plant in Angeles, one that only grows in Angeles, not far from the court. He told me it has the power to cure even the most dire illnesses. People on the brink of death, or those suffering for years. The plant can help them.”
“And Willie thinks this plant can help Queen Rose?”

It is Julie and Luke's first Christmas together in their own apartment and things are going great. Ray's given them old ornaments and they have a tree ready to go- all that's left is to complete their gingerbread house and decorate the tree. Though, with Luke Patterson, everything takes a much more energetic turn.

Willie remembers the warnings. Humans are selfish. Do your job; focus only on your one singular human and protect them. The life of a guardian angel has one purpose and one purpose only. Don’t become too attached. Willie broke that last rule. They grew too attached to their human. To Alex.
Or: Willie is Alex's guardian angel but gets stripped of his wings when he gets too involved. Since Alex is all he knows, he goes searching for him... except he's too late.

in which Willie loves a ghost and almost damns all consequences.
Willie knows, he knows he shouldn’t get attached. Julie’s reminder isn’t necessary, though he feels warm at the thought that this girl he only met today—however long that today has been already—is showing concern for him. And he fucking knows it’s a terrible idea.
It’s so damn hard, though. It’s so fucking hard because Alex doesn’t feel like some demonic spirit—no matter how vivid the proof of the contrary is in Willie’s memory, no matter the fact that they’ve kidnapped Carrie, that they’ve been forcibly stripping them all of agency over and over again. Willie knows he shouldn’t even consider anything other than fury and hatred over what Alex and his friends have been doing to them.
And yet. And yet.
And yet, he can’t stop thinking about the parts that aren’t supernatural rage or twisted visions. He can’t stop thinking about the sobs, the all-encompassing sadness and fear that hollow him out over and over again. He can’t stop thinking about the image of Alex, soaked and bloodied, curled up on himself and screaming through his tears.

Trevor has been back in the boys’ lives for three days now, and Julie’s not entirely sure if she’s happy for them all that they’ve reunited, or sad that they don’t seem to need her as much anymore, but she is sure that she’s the worst friend in the world for being in a position where she actually has to think about it.
It’s a weird place to be in, really, to be so goddamn touched at the way their faces light up as soon as Trevor’s car pulls into the drive way, and yet to feel that awful sting in her chest when they peel off the sofa they’d been curled up with her on, in order to go greet their old friend

Still feeling the effects of his break up with Luke, Bobby finds himself in a slump with his art. His first ever gallery showing is in 2 weeks, yet the inspiration is not flowing. He asked each of his friends to model for a different medium. While they are happy to help, all of them know the real reason he can’t create is because he lost his muse.

Slowly, the silver at her shoulders glows more brightly, burning through the soft fabric of her dress to leave two holes through which a pair of large, iridescent white wings unfurl. The wings continue to unfold—growing outwards as the girl shakes her riotous curls back from her face. She tips her face back towards the sky as the clouds finally begin to dissipate.

It’s Kinda Wild How You’re the One That Brings the Sun
When Carrie chooses Alex to stand in for Dirty Candy’s only male dancer, he gets so excited and anxious that he has to go take deep breaths in the bathroom for at least five minutes.
When he gets the text bringing him onto Dirty Candy full-time, he has to go have another bathroom deep breathing session.
And to make it worse, Willie, the guy he'd replaced, seems determined to hate him, and Alex just can't figure out why.
Well, at least he gets to dance. And who knows? Maybe they'll get closer along the way...
