Julie is related to Caleb Covington. Hear me out

You may read the title and go… “wtf is she on??” and I would totally agree with you if I wasn’t awake at 2 am while writing this.

Now, I have heard a few theories that Alex is related to Caleb, but I decided to go in a different direction. An odd direction to be sure, but oh well.

Introduction

Caleb Covington is a man—a ghost of the roaring twenties. He’s shown to have his name and face on his very own poster, hyping up a show of his from 1921 with a very ugly moustache. We can easily predict that this man was alive in the twenties and probably died in the twenties, too.

And as we can seen in the above image… he seemed to be married.

Not much is known about Julie’s ancestry, apart from the fact that her mother‘s name was Rose, she was a big fan of Dahlias, and that she had a band called the Rose & the Petal Pushers but decided to quit the limelight in favour of becoming a piano teacher. We also know that on Julies mother’s side of the family, they speak with Spanish accents, meaning that they come from a dominantly Spanish speaking place. Personally, I believe that they come from Puerto Rico. I will touch on this later.

Start of the theory

When I was re-watching Julie and the Phantoms for the third time, I noticed that in episode six, when Julie was going through her mother’s clothes for the first time, I noticed that inside the box there was a picture of a Dahlia and the date “1892”. Call me crazy, but this was around the time that Caleb was alive, no? This box, I believe, belonged to Rose’s grandmother, Dahlia, when she was alive in the early 1900s. It could have been received as a birthday gift when she was born (or at least that’s my theory).

Julie’s family seems to have a bit of a track record of naming their first born daughter’s after flowers. While Julie’s name may not be a species of flower, it is actually a type of flower; ‘Julie One’ is actually a type of Dahlia I found while searching up ‘Julie’ and ‘Dahlia’.

Even Julie’s aunt, Victoria, is named after a flower, the Victoria Amazonia, or the Amazon water lily. It’s found off the coast of South America. The water Lily has strong connections to rebirth and resurrection.

My guess is that Rose looked up to her grandmother, Dahlia, for being a stage performer that her mother was not (as julie’s grandmother—or grandfather—has yet to seem relevant). In respect of her grandmother birthing her love of the Dahlia, she decided to name her daughter after her in hopes that she too would be a great performer; ‘Julie One Dahlia’.

Fun fact

Now, fun fact, Dahlias originate from both Mexico and Guatemala and were first bred in the 1800s. I believe that this is actually symbolism for where Julie’s family first came from. That her (great)grandmother came from either Mexico or Guatemala (we’re going with Puerto Rico for now, as that’s what I says on the box) and has to immigrate to America.

But how would she have been able to do this?

Answer! Her mentor, Caleb Covington.

Now, call me crazy, but Caleb doesn’t seem to be the nicest man. The “Caleb and Willie” relationship seems to be some sort of a mentorship. Currently, we are able to deduct that he has Willie under his wing… for price; he seems to be teaching Willie all the tricks that he wishes to know in exchange for (what has been theorised to be) a little bit of his soul in order to make sure that Caleb always has power.

Back to theory

What if, when Caleb was alive, he was able to use his reputation to get Dahlia over the border… in exchange for her hand in marriage?

I’ve been able to deduce the approximate birthdates for the entire Julie family tree. Caleb was approximately born in 1882 if he died at the age of 46 in 1928. If Dahlia was born in 1892, then they had a 10 year age gap (which wasn’t bad for the time). Personally, I think that Caleb may have died in the early 1930s, as the style of song he sings is swing, which wasn’t invented until the early 1930s, with the first swing-styled song being made in 1931. I’m not going to be going into this though.

Edit: something I only noticed after writing this is that in episode five, at eight minutes and seven seconds (8:07), there’s a woman who Caleb addressees as “my darling”, and asks her where’s she’s been, talking about her dress. She seems to be of Spanish decent and could be said to look an awful lot like Rose. Could this woman be Dahlia?

Be gay, do crime

Anyway, of course, I’ve seen the theory that Caleb is gay, and I do actually wholeheartedly believe in it. At the time, being gay was much less accepted than it was these days, Celebrities would often marry into heterosexual relationships, called a “beard”, in order to seem straight. Dahlia’s cost for getting over the border could have been that she had to be Caleb’s beard.

Outside of their beard relationship, though, Caleb would’ve been her mentor, teaching her about music and dance of the time. This is how she became such a great performer.

Sorry

I’ve almost come close to the end of this rant that I’m pinning as a theory, so just stick around for a little while longer.

I believe that the reason why Caleb died, is because he was out of practice after the birth of either his daughter or son, in approximately 1927/1928. If he never had a child during his time alive, people would start to suspect that he’s gay, as at the time, it was very common to have lots of children. They instead only decided on having a child very late in their “relationship”.

Personally, I would say that his child would’ve been a boy if Rose was to be born in the mid-late 1970s making her 17-21 in 1995. If Dahlia and Caleb‘s child was born in 1928, then in approximately 1976, the child would have been 48–a valid age for male child making.

I swear I’m not crazy

Lastly, why am I so insistent on the fact that Caleb is related to Julie? Well, it’s been very unexplained how Julie is able to see the band members and make them visible. And, even though the band members have barely even met Rose (Julie’s mother), they seem to be connected to her somehow. Maybe everything is connected through Caleb? After all [SPOILER], when the band members were put under the spell by Caleb (that could only be undone by Caleb), Julie managed to break the spell just by wanting to hard enough. How is this possible?

Between looking up houses in LA on zillow for a fanfic and researching how US medical debt works for that same fic, I have concluded that Ray Molina is a hit man.

I was absolutely heartbroken about Julie and the Phantoms being cancelled. Believe me. To this day, it is still one of my favourite shows of all time, and it breaks my heart knowing that I will never see those characters in new settings and situations ever again. We can still create fan content (which is amazing!!), but obviously it’s not the same as.. ya know... getting season 2....

But here’s the thing; I feel as though Julie and the Phantoms (somewhat) got a happy ending? I mean, the curse is lifted, and the boys didn’t cross over, but they can interact with Julie now that’s something! And they got to perform at that cool venue (I forgot the name of it it’s been a while lol) and honestly, if we forget that ONE scene at the very end of the very last episode, that’s a satisfying ending!! Like sure, there is a lot of wasted opportunity and there’s a LOT more they could’ve done with it, but tbh if i just ignore the last scene, I’m happy with that ending!!

Now, the problem with OFMD is that... this isn’t a good ending.

This isn’t even an ending.

It feels like the end of act 1.

It’s not finished.

Stede and Ed (not to mention all the other couples) are seperated. The crew of The Revenge are stranded. Ed is broken.

This isn’t the end. This cannot be the end...

As I was re-watching Julie and the Phantoms for the third time, I noticed at some point that Caleb had a ring on his ring finger. Now, there’s a theory that he’s gay, and I wholeheartedly believe in this theory, but in the 1920s, he wouldn’t been able to marry a man (especially since he was famous). Any thoughts? It was just something interesting I found.

Also kinda thinking of uploading a entire theory I came up about his love life and how he’s related to Julie.

I am in my Jatp era again and I can’t stop making theories.

What happened to Reggie’s and Alex’s parents?

All we know is that Reggie’s parents were fighting and that Alex’s parents didn’t really agree with Alex’s sexuality.

But, Whatever happens makes clear that Alex’s parents weren’t abusive, just in shock. They were distant but I am sure they still loved him.

Reggie’s parents weren’t abusive either. He really wanted to see them again. I assume their fights were about a cheating situation (because Reggie was always saying that “Ray is the best dad” “Well, he is a dad” things like that)

In Whatever Happens we learn that Reggie has a brother: Steve, which is younger than him (we never knew exactly the age, but I assume he was around 9-10 when Reggie died, I don’t know, I just feel it). What happened to him? In the book is mentioned that Reggie was Steve’s model. In my mind, he became a rock star to fulfil his brother’s dream.

And what about Bobby? He never talked to Reggie’s Alex’s and Luke’s anymore? Just vanished? That’s really weird (but I have another theory in my mind)

In conclusion, I miss Julie and the phantoms…

Yknow, there’s rumors going around of Julie and The Phantoms coming back for a season 2 which would be coming to Disney+ if I had to guess (and with a few people’s opinion/theory??) but it’s not actually confirmed yet.

But if I’m being honest, I’m sort of scared for the people who love Jatp because I’ve seen a few clips of the show and if it’s actually true that Disney+ will pick the show up,

I pray, because knowing Disney, they will not let some things fly.

Like I Know Julie and the phantoms is a show for kids so they wouldn’t show or do things that are not kid friendly but Disney would take that on a whole new level of kid friendly-ness.

Also it’s Disney+, PLUS, so I don’t think people should be that worried but you never know man 🤷.

Just finished my rewatch of jatp. My perfrct track record of not crying during Unsaid Emily remains untouched. I will say though, I was very close to shedding a tear this time. However, I didn’t even cry during Stand Tall! I always cry during Stand Tall!

Anyways, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the headcanons and theories that us tumblr fantoms created and the little easter eggs we discovered while watching and rewatching the series. It makes me really appreciative of the fact that we had a sense of community during a time where a lot of us were alone, scared, and uninspired. Just like Julie, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and hope. I think that a lot of people felt the same after watching the show. Julie and the Phantoms is what inspired me to learn the piano, the ukulele, and it led me to getting a guitar. When I learned how to play the chords for the soundtrack, I was playing those songs nonstop. It really helped me brave through the unsure feelings that came along with the pandemic. It made me forget my fears about the future.

I don’t feel as hopeful about things as I did back then, but JATP will always be a land-marking point in my life. It represents newfound joy, reignited passion, and abundant vivacity. As someone who loves and is extremely passionate about music, this silly little netflix show really hit me in the most sensitive places. And while I remember having a bout of serious depression after finishing the series, (along with intense rage that while I was dealing with my depression at its lowest point, the cast of jatp was living what felt like my dream) the lessons I learned from the show were far more significant. It literally brought music back into my life, no joke.

The friends I made because of JATP will always have a special place in my heart. A lot of them don’t use tumblr anymore, and I don’t use it nearly as much as I used to, but I’m still so grateful to have been introduced to such kind, accepting, and funny people. The stories, theories, headcanons, fanfictions, moodboards, inside jokes, memes, and fanart we created will always be remembered and cherished. I’m still pro-cheesecake, I’m still highly allergic to sleeves, and every time I see an unnecessary or fake zipper, I think of my fellow tumblr fantoms.

I don’t think I’ll ever truly “get over” Julie and the Phantoms. It was the first thing that truly resonated with my spirit as a new adult. I was 19 and had dropped out of college, feeling completely lost and like I had nothing going for me. Going into lockdown because of the pandemic didn’t help with any of that, and I was aimlessly, endlessly scrolling on social media, hoping to find meaning and purpose. And one day, my friend posted a clip on snapchat of what she was watching on netflix. The guy was cute and it looked like him and the girl he was next to had a nice connection so I asked what show it was. That’s how I discovered JATP, almost 2 weeks after its release. I also just have an unhealthy attachment to the show and the characters so I refuse to let this media that speaks to my soul die.

All that being said, we really deserved another season. I think it would cure me entirely, if I’m being honest. Even if it was just a little Christmas special where they decorate a tree and do those mini stories like filler episodes of a cartoon series. Hell, I’d settle for an animated JATP episode. I just think we all deserve it after what we’ve been through not only as a fandom, but as human beings. I will never forgive netflix for it’s terrible job at promoting, because they only failed when it came to this show specifically. They managed to keep every other show, even ones far less deserving of acclaim and attention, afloat during and after the pandemic. The only reason JATP managed to get anywhere was solely the cast, creators, and fans. Paul Becker was on fucking overdrive, churning out BTS videos WEEKLY. Fanfiction writers were bursting at the seams with multi-chapter series and one shots about every possible scenario. We got things trending on twitter during the two most chronically online years. Fanart was being shared like crazy, and we had the instagram fantoms so confused by the memes that they retaliated and claimed they were superior.

Meanwhile, tumblr was in its shadowbanning era, and fantoms were in the TRENCHES trying to get their content to reach beyond mutuals and taglists. We received barely any appreciation, except for when we trended on twitter asking to renew jatp and on tumblr for jatp appreciation week. Let’s not forget when we thought Owen had a secret tumblr and we all started accusing each other of being him. I will never forget when we all rallied to get Madi to 1 million followers because we didn’t want her to become overshadowed by the boys and all the attention they were getting. We all watched their instagram lives and I will always love the tumblr fantoms who made gifs of the cutest moments from those. Everyone saw me shamelessly simp over Charlie with facial hair wearing a santa onesie. We created a whole Carrie redemption arc out of thin air, we created origin stories for Rose and the Petal Pushers, and we forced the creators of JATP to give us the official last names of Reggie, Alex, and Flynn (This adventure SPECIFICALLY!!!) We were ruthless in our efforts to uncover their last names. We used breadcrumbs to make theories and speculations, only to end up begging in every comment section and dm inbox we could to get Reggie Peters, Alex Mercer, and eventually—though much, much later—Flynn Taylor. We gave Willie more crop tops, we basically storyboarded a second season, complete with episode titles and songs! We uncovered the Sunset Curve EP using the grainiest photos in existence, we created a loose timeline surrounding everyone’s birthdays, deaths, and significant events. We orchestrated a fucking CONCERT TOUR for this band. Oh, and let’s not forget when Kenny and the boys went to Hawaii. That Hawaii trip was so eventful for the fantoms, you have no idea how serious I’m being unless you were there for it. That was something unlike anything else for so many reasons. There’s a lot more, but that’s the stuff that came to mind immediately.
