Osechi, the traditional food for the first 3 days of the new year, and ozoni, the traditional soup of New Year’s Day. However, we’re only going to be home for one day! Thankfully the grocery store had small osechi sets. It was our first time having grocery store osechi, but it was really good! I make ozoni based on my mother-in-law’s recipe. We use homemade mochi, mitsuba, daikon, and carrot. I also add komatsuna because that’s a traditional ingredient here in southern Gifu. There’s always huge komatsuna displays at the grocery store leading up to the new year. I also picked up some cute wagashi. This is a lacquered set made for drinking Otoso on new year’s day. It is spiced sake made by steeping a mixture of 7-10 herbs (safflower, licorice, cinnamon bark, Japanese sansho pepper among others) in sake. I do not know if they still do this today but long ago it was the tradition for the Imperial family stuff herbs in a triangular bag and hang the bag on a peach tree branch above water on the 19th of December, At four in the morning on New Year’s Day the bags were taken in and steeped in sake for several hours before the concoction was ready. Things to do before drinking (traditional way) Before drinking otoso, be sure to purify your hands with young water (the first water of the year drawn from the morning of the New Year's morning), worship the shrines and altars, and greet the New Year when your family is ready. You are supposed to drink otoso before eating new year’s food. When drinking, the whole family faces east. Pour from the right side of the drinker, and drink from youngest to oldest. This is said to mean that the elders swallow the youth's lively vigor (also probably traditionally from when there was someone tasting and drinking the Emperor’s food for poisons) . If there is a person that has entered into their “bad luck” year , that person drinks last so that they can receive strength from others.
