I've been making some pretty strong music recommendations lately, usually late and night and at enthusiastic volume. At one of the extraordinary residency shows An Even Sun played last month, their bassist Pete told me off for always recommending quiet folky stuff in my email when my personal recommendations were so much more all-over-the-place. Fair enough! Here's one of my all-time most played records. If you've had dinner at my house in the last 8 years, you've heard this album. Menahan Street Band are a New York supergroup who came together to cut a charity single and then just couldn't stop playing. This album was released as the world was clueing into the Daptone sound - tight, analog-recorded horn arrangements made famous by Mark Ronson's production of Amy Winehouse's Back in Black and then his extraordinary followup album Version. Menahan Street Band have players from the Daptone house band the Dap-Kings as well as the hard-afrobeat band Antibalas, the El Michaels Affair (who got famous for live soul covers of classic Wu Tang backbeats) and gypsy-soul-ethio fusioneers the Budos Band. So that's the pedigree - what's the sound? It's hard to pin down. There's a cool-as-shit walking the Brooklyn streets vibe on the title track, a bit of an exploitation/spy thriller vibe on The Traitor, and an Avalanches-esque chill vibe onHome Again. It's a perfect album listen, so you really should just put on the whole thing. Trust me. If the instrumental vibe isn't your thing (I think it will be, but you know, just in case) they were the band for Charles Bradley on his breakout album, No Time For Dreaming.
