A rant about Foul Detective Satori/Cheating Detective Satori
Sorry, this will be long, but I have a lot of thoughts I need to get out. Spoilers abound.
I really tried to like this series. I defended it for awhile, and I thought it couldn't be as bad as SSiB, my previous least favorite Touhou official manga. As one might expect from my name and pfp, I am very attached to the Komeiji siblings. I also really love mysteries, especially if they're murder mystery themed like this one. But I found myself enjoying it less and less as it went on, and Chapter 29 finally killed the series for me. I'm so disappointed by how Satori is treated in the series named after her. You would think that being the titular character might make her at least A main character, but she's not even a secondary character. She's practically a glorified extra, which sucks because her ability that previous caused her to be hated by everyone in-universe could have been used to show her becoming loved for the exact same reason. Even worse is that the series is now fighting for who actually can be a main character between like five different people, and none of them are the titular character. Yeah, it was great seeing Flandre again, but why is she still playing such a large role in this when it's moved so far past the Scarlet Devil Mansion?
And as much as I love Reimu and Marisa, I can't deny that they are quite possible the WORST characters to lead a mystery story. They have no interest in figuring out the why, the how, the who, any of the things that make a mystery compelling. They just want to end the incident and be done with it. That works fine for games where it's not trying to build up a mysterious and tense atmosphere, but for something that's meant to be a mystery story, I can't help but wonder why they're so involved. Especially since this manga is probably the worst offender of a trend I've noticed recently of Reimu canonically losing at pretty much everything.
Characterization also started out pretty strong. We saw Reimu and Marisa being concerned about those around them instead of just themselves. Flandre was given interesting character shading that made her seem less violently unhinged and more of a standoffish devil-may-care kind of anti-hero. Orin was in the story at all (seriously, how long has she been tied to that damn tree!), and Satori was an active and key player at first. Now, Reimu and Marisa are in this pretty much just for themselves (which circles back to my previous point), Flandre has fully reverted into pure fanon characterization, actively UNDOING development she had (and don't worry, undone progress is going to be commented on more). And Satori is a glorified extra, which is insulting not only because the series is called Foul/Cheating Detective Satori, and not only because she's the only character who seemingly IS interested in the who, the what, the why, the how, and so on. And, she's the only one with a decent chance of solving things. It would be so much more interesting to see this from her perspective.
While it's not really here as much anymore, when the artist switched, I noticed a lot of very out-of-place comedy for a story that seems like it's trying to present itself seriously. I know comedy is nothing new to Touhou, but the story had established itself as a far more dramatic and serious story with the first artist, and I don't think it's unreasonable to want the same tone to carry throughout an entire story so it can be consistent.
Of course, what hasn't stopped is the awful pacing. This story has such a huge issue with padding that it genuinely makes me sad. It's gotten to the point of actively undoing progress, possibly best demonstrated in the most recent chapter (chapter 29 at the time of writing). The story drags itself out for so long that any time progress is made, you'd better not expect it to stay, because it WILL change anything before that progress means anything, and then we're back to square one. Like, for example, how we finally figured out who was possessed (Kyouko) only for the pacing to drag on so long for no good reason that it changed before that information could mean anything. Even more insulting, the person now possessed is the titular character, who by all accounts, should have been the story's heroine.
I also can't get into The Jailbreak King at all. I mentioned before that Silent Sinner in Blue was my previous least favorite official Touhou manga. There are two reasons for that, both present here. One is the aforementioned pacing and padding, and the other is the ridiculously OP antagonists. Yorihime made me enraged with how ridiculously flawless she was, as she was completely untouchable. The new villain Mizuchi is that but worse. She is pretty much entirely invulnerable and always 10 steps ahead of everyone. This could make for a good mystery premise if we got to slowly chip away at that lead, but again, the pacing and padding makes that impossible. Not to mention all the lore it messes up (like the most powerful youkai in the setting being incredibly easy to possess), or the fact that it makes no sense why Mizuchi can get away with possessing one of the sages and no one is particularly bothered by it.
I can't even be mad about the premise. It is such a cool premise. Like I said, a character who is hated in-universe by everyone for her ability to read minds because people are creeped out about it is now the only one with a chance to resolve a mystery that threatens pretty much everyone. It's a chance for redemption for her. It's her chance to prove that her ability isn't a bad thing to people that aren't herself. And if anything, is also a way to potentially prove that to her sister, who closed her third eye and shut off her emotions because of the hatred that she received from the people who hated them. Satori was literally the only one capable of figuring this out and solving this mystery in a timely manner that kept people safe. But between being demoted to extra and the pacing and padding being so awful, that I can't really see happening anymore. And now that she's become a victim in her own story, I don't think it's realistically possible for that opportunity to come again at this point. It took what could have been a really good premise, a really good mystery with a really good redemption for a character in universe was hated by everyone, potentially giving her the chance to finally be loved by people for the very reason that they hated her, and it fucking threw it in a garbage can and set that garbage can on fire.
So, yeah, all in all? I'm super disappointed by this series.

I suppose the morning of 413 is as good a time as any to claim that if you are considering reading Homestuck, you should test the waters by reading Jailbreak (as it's very short and has assorted callbacks), then read Problem Sleuth (as it's a very complete package; I've reread PS more than I've read Homestuck).
Then, draw a line from from Jailbreak to Problem Sleuth, in terms of complexity, quality, and scope, and extend that line through to the first era of Homestuck.
And then scribble that line out and replace it with a parabolic curve, to represent the colossal scope creep that is Homestuck Act 6, and only after that, decide if you actually want to read Homestuck, or dig through summaries and TvTropes to get the gist of what people care about.

The Judgment of Lord Andreas
Tumblr media
"I've already forgiven you, Andreas." Ulrich spoke softly. "But it is my duty to pass judgment."
"Do you think I care what punishment you create for me?" Andreas snapped. "You deserved all of this, and more for what you did! For the life of my sister!"
"You truly believe that?" Ulrich asked. "You believe I killed her? That I am solely responsible for the death of my wife?"
"Failing to save her makes you guilty of her death. She was my sister, my blood, and you let her die!"
"I wasn't even there, Andreas!" Ulrich shouted back at him. "How can I be held responsible?! Do you think I don't think about her every waking moment, wondering if I could have saved her if I had only been there?! Why must you torment me? Why-"
"Because it should not have been her!"
Ulrich froze, a bewildered look on his face.
"She should have never been there, she should have never married you, but you chose her."
"Andreas-" Ulrich was slowly coming to a realization. A fact he had never noticed, an idea he had never entertained.
"I was right there, but you chose her." Andreas said. He was still shouting, angry tears rolling down his cheek. "I was in love with you, but you married her!"
That was when the guards pulled Andreas back and forced him to his knees. Ulrich glanced over at Maialen. Her hands were balled into fists so hard that her knuckles were white, and her jaw was clenched. For the first time he saw her for who she really was, an angry and jealous soul.
"Out." He ordered. He repeated it when she tried to argue, then he looked at the guards. "Leave us."
The guards were hesitant to let go of Andreas, but they did as their King commanded. One of them took hold of Maialen's arm to make her leave. Andreas slumped on the floor, he was crying still and muttering to himself.
Ulrich could hear him saying "It should have been me." And "She could still be alive if it had been me."
He knelt beside Andreas and pulled him into an embrace. It hurt Ulrich to see others in pain, especially if he considered it to be his fault.
"Hush now," Ulrich said, trying to soothe him with his words. "You are alive, and she would not want you to wish otherwise."
Andreas looked up at him with tear stained cheeks and regret in his eyes.
"I wish you had come to me, yelled all this at me, before having done what you did to me." Ulrich said. "You have scarred me, in a way you don't yet understand."
Even if Andreas could think of what to say, he didn't have a chance to speak. Ulrich kissed him. Almost immediately his eyes began to feel heavy. As the world dimmed and he succumbed to the anesthesia, Andreas heard "I have the perfect punishment in mind for you."
Andreas woke in a room he didn't recognize. He had half expected to wake up in a cell, so it was a relief. He found an attendant's uniform laid out for him and started to put the pieces together. After he was dressed, a senior attendant came to escort him to a small room lined with shelves. Off to the side was a fully prepped workstation. He was left alone with medicinal ingredients, the necessary tools, and a recipe.
"I don't know what I'm doing, " Andreas said, frustrated with the task the senior attendant had given him. It was hours since he'd been brought to the room, yet he still couldn't figure it out.
"Then you will have to learn. And learn to ask when you don't know"
Andreas whirled around to see Ulrich with an amused smile on his face.
"You are the head attendant now," Ulrich told him. "Which also means you are my consort. And one day, Andreas, you will be my husband. Until then you must learn to heal, and you must never hurt any living being purposefully ever again. This will be your punishment and your atonement."
Andreas looked down at his task. The poultice he was attempting to make looked completely wrong. A stray thought ran rampant through his mind that he would fail and never learn anything, but a hand on his shoulder chased the thought away. Ulrich was standing over him.
"It doesn't look right…" Andreas said.
"It's not, " Ulrich confirmed. He grabbed a pinch of wild flower seeds and added them to the mixture. "A single missed ingredient can affect the result."
"Mix that, and you'll have correctly made your very first healing poultice." Ulrich smiled at him, then pointed to a nearby shelf. "Your task is to fill all the bottles on that shelf."
Andreas paled slightly. There were about fifteen crates filled with small medical glass bottles. Ulrich chuckled when he saw Andreas' reaction, smoothing his hair.
"Not all in one day, just do one crate for now." He kissed Andreas' forehead. "Your punishment will last for as long as I was imprisoned. I won't let you off easy."
And with that, he left Andreas to his task hoping they would both be able to heal together.

King Tuck has arrived! Hail to the king!
My version of Tucker Foley is very similar to the original, but a bit taller, and a bit more of a handsome boy. As previously stated forever ago, Tucker is a total nerd, not just a geek. He love anime, video games, comics, ttrpgs, mmo’s, tcgs, cosplay, and building gundam models. He’s also a bit of a furry, with a cyborg-wolf fursona.
Tucker is also a masterful programmer, and occasional white hat hacker. He makes money to support his hobby by offering tech repairs and jailbreaks. I’m considering making him asexual, just because I’m so damn tired of the girl-crazy-comic-relief-black-best-friend trope that was so damn prevalent in that era, but I’m open to suggestions.

do you have any c!awesamdream fics recomendations?
Honestly, I don’t have a ton of recs. c!awesamdream fic is mysteriously hard to find, and I also wouldn’t want to recommend you anything super E-rated in case that’s not your jam. Personally I’ve had more success searching the Sam & Dream gen relationship tag than the slash tag. That said, here are my no-brainer recs, most are gen with some exceptions:
inosculation by @theminecraftbox - canon compliant, reflection on how their relationship progresses during the prison arc, how c!sam’s authoritarian tendencies bloom in pandora, and the weird symbiosis he and dream achieve. technically not a slash fic but like it is To Me!!
saltwater on rock by @elmhat - also not technically a slash fic but it is a fun exploration of their relationship post-prison: who are they to each other, now that they aren’t prisoner and warden? what power has dream reclaimed, what power has sam ceded? or is it the other way around? fun stuff.
the trees deny themselves nothing by @lookinghalfacorpse - if you’re asking for recs you’ve probably already read this one (it’s basically THE awesamdream fic at this point) but i think it lends itself to re-readability! and if you haven’t read it: dream loses his leg in pandora, phil n techno conscript sam to make him a new one after the jailbreak, things get interesting. OP also wrote a post-fic oneshot which you can read here.
everlasting evermore by @elmhat - incomplete atm and also not slash but definitely awesamdream vibes. sam is a sad widower king who interrogates dream in his dungeon so it scratches the fantasy itch. this fic does some cool things with the cloning lab lore and i’m really excited to see where it goes!
21 steps in the desert by @airrec - banger. it's short so i won't describe it in detail. banger tho!
scream eureka by @cgogs - basically a post-canon domestic horror fic, sam and dream are married (with a kid on the way) but neither of them is able to move on from pandora. this fic deals with issues of bodily autonomy very well and it’s also refreshing to see trans pregnancy handled with tact, rather than treated like a fetish or a joke. IIRC this fic is an AU of an AU so be warned, it does come with like 30 pages of background lore which isn't necessary to understand the fic but does make it easier to follow.
all these lives by @lookinghalfacorpse - reincarnation drabble, plays with sam’s obsession in fun ways. not really sure how else to describe this one but i reread it sometimes! it’s good!
you don't have to be like that by @dr3amofagame - incomplete, i haven't reread this one in a while but i remember enjoying it at lot! dream gives sam the book in a moment of desperation and then has to navigate the fallout.
accident by @airrec - another fave. concise, fucked up, and very well written.
i’ve also been working on a multichap awesamdream fic (am i allowed to rec my own fics??? is that too cringe??) that’s gonna be wrapping up soon. pandora's vault gains sentience, that's the whole plot. like most of the other works on this list, it’s not technically ship fic but it is very much about sam and dream’s...situation. full warning tho, it’s long and rambly and weird, sorry for that!
i also wanna add that pretty much any fic that explores the scrapped lore is gonna have to deal with awesamdreamisms by necessity, owing to the nature of, well, the lore. there's a decent amount of fics about it, here's one that I found recently and enjoyed a lot.
Have fun, mind the tags. And if you find more then by all means, feel free to add to this post! I know there's a lot of tumblr-exclusive content floating around out there that can be harder to find than stuff on AO3.
Also, it's worth mentioning that some of the most compelling c!awesamdream content I've read were brief interludes in fics about much broader subjects in the fandom; I've read a lot of great c!awesamdream moments in c!rivals fics, prison trio fics, c!dnf fics, etc. So my advice is to cast your net wide, if that makes sense? Happy reading!

So I was prompted to write my own take on the Luigi jailbreak scenario via someone's tags :D I'll probably cross-post this to ao3 sometime later today.
I've definitely taken a more comedic bent with my interpretation, which I feel is in more in line with what the movie will be like. But there's some smidgens of angst. And a fair amount of silliness. And yes, the brothers will reunite at the end :)
And so, I give you, "Jailbreak." A comedy in two parts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Speech! Speech! Speech!”
“I’m not really much of a speech-giver…” Luigi protests as the Penguin King’s burly aide pushes him towards the center of the gathered escapees.
The chamber, or the evil rotunda, as Luigi thinks of it, is a circular room punched through the middle, a series of chains descending from a large, wooden crank set high in the rafters. Bits of armor and weaponry are strewn about the floor, spears and hammers and something resembling a megaphone that shoots fire, which was definitely the first thing Luigi clipped to his belt after they had thrown the remaining guards into the pit. The interior design can only be described as ghoulish, stone busts of various Koopas, as he had learned they were called, inflicting violence on various species - penguins, birds, some kind of mushroom people, and a green, happy-looking lizard wearing boots and a saddle.
The Penguin aide continues to push him bodily through the throng, which is smushed together near the entrance doors, careful to keep far, far away from the menacing cavity in the middle of the room. Luigi takes stock of the strange group, wondering how in the hell he went from checking out a warehouse leak in Flushing to shimmying up a chain dangling over a pit of lava to knocking out an armed, sentient turtle with a well-placed pitch of one of those ghastly busts.
“Gathered friends,” the aide begins, having caught the attention of the murmuring group. “Fellow penguins, goombas, birdos, and…” he trails off, glancing over at Luma, who gives a high-pitched, broken giggle, the effect of which is like nails drawn across a chalkboard. The penguin’s expression crumples into folds of distaste. “And psychotic star…things…”
“Weeeee!” Luma exclaims helpfully, bounding across the ceiling rafters, setting the chains off into a chorus of tortured groans.
The aide clears his throat. “Yes, well. As I was saying. We’re gathered here today - or tonight. Or maybe this afternoon. You know, it’s honestly hard to know being stuck in the bowels of a lava castle…” Off to the side, the Penguin King is making cutting gestures across his throat.
“It’s two thirty-seven!” one of the Goombas calls from the back.
“Afternoon, then! That’s lunchtime!” a Birdo exclaims from the other side of the room.
“I could eat!”
“Me, too. Think they have any turnips down here?”
“Weeeee!”
The aide slaps a fin to his forehead with a deep sigh. “Can we please focus here?” he yells over the growing din. Luigi chews on his lower lip, fingering the trigger of the fire gun hanging from his belt. This is the ragtag group of rebels he's supposed to be leading to the gates of the Lava Castle?
He’s definitely going to die here.
“As I was saying,” the aide begins again, deepening his voice into a royal solemnity. “In our darkest hour - “
“It’s still two thirty-seven, Mr. Penguin!”
“In our darkest lightest hour,” the aide hisses. “A hero arrived from another world. Beaten but not defeated, he liberated us from our imprisonment with his courage, intelligence, and most importantly, his opposable thumbs. And now, this hero will lead us to storm the gates of the Koopa Castle and aid us in smiting our enemies to take back what is ours!”
“Friends, I give you - “ the penguin flings his fins open, whacking the Luigi in the shin.
“Our hero - Loogi!”
The crowd erupts in a high-pitched cheer, raising an assortment of cobbled-together weapons over their small heads. Even the ridiculous, toothy Goombas are hopping up and down, chanting Loogi! Loogi! Loogi!
Luigi pulls at his collar, giving the odd gathering the kind of half-smile, half-grimace he usually reserved for school pictures and his brother’s cooking.
“Uhhhhh…..” Luigi begins when the clamor dies down. He gives a small wave in all directions, adding, “Hi?”
Fifty or so pairs of eyes, and some other appendages he couldn’t even begin to name, stare at him wide-eyed, expectant. He wonders if they see him as some kind of action hero, or trained assassin, or even a mercenary soldier of fortune, like that one movie he and his brother watched all the time back in Bensonurst.
What the hell is he supposed to say? He’s a mechanical engineer-turned-plumber from Brooklyn, a street kid and a science geek, not some kind of war hero. Not to mention, he still doesn’t know where the hell he is, surrounded by talking penguins, birds with cannons for mouths, and whatever those weird little Goombas are supposed to be.
Luigi clenches his jaw.
He thinks it’s been about three days since he was dropped unceremoniously into whatever incarnation of hell this place is supposed to be. And in that time, he’s been chased by skeletons and tied up by a bunch of miniature red monks with gasmasks. He’s had his moustache hairs plucked out by a giant, firebreathing turtle bent on taking over whatever world this was. He’s been magically levitated and thrown about by a dinosaur wizard in a goofy hat. And to top it all off, to put the crap cherry on the crap cake, he was tossed into a cage like some old lady’s pet bird and dropped over a pit of freakin’ lava.
Screw speeches. I want Bowser’s kneecaps.
“You guys want a speech?” Luigi growls, tightening his grip on the gigantic hammer in his hand. “Here’s your damn speech.” Luigi raises his weapon over his head, yelling, “Let’s kick some Koopa ass!”
A raucous cheer rises from the gathered motley group, Luma zooming around the chamber, shouting “Meat for the grinder! Meat for the grinder!” between fits of maniacal laughter. The penguins dance awkwardly, their weapons twice as large as they are and Luigi hopes what they lack in stature they can make up for with enthusiasm. Off to the side, the collection of Goombas bounce up and down. Without any discernible arms or hands, Luigi has no clue what help the Goombas could be, but who knows? Maybe they can bite somebody with those fangs.
He has no plan, no knowledge of where he is, and he prays to every deity he can name that his brother is safe, that whatever world he got pulled into is treating him better than this one has Luigi. But watching the ragtag group celebrate in front of him, he feels something akin to hope.
For the first time in three days, Luigi smiles.
Maybe, just maybe, he can be a hero after all.
--------------------------------------
Epilogue
“Watch to your left, Loogi!”
Luigi spins, hurtling his hammer at a charging spiny-shelled Koopa, sending him flying into the general fracas of the first floor antechamber. Towards the middle of the room, Penguins and Birdos and little mushroom people armed with spears are battling it out with Bowser’s minions, shell, fur, and feather flying as his ragtag band of rebels pokes and swats and, in some cases, bodily hurl themselves at the gathered Koopa forces.
Luigi sprints to retrieve his hammer, intent on throwing himself into the fray when the large double-doors to the throne room boom open in a rush of blinding, white light. It takes Luigi a minute for his eyes to adjust, so long has he been trapped in the gloomy castle chambers. There’s something coming from the light, some kind of shadow hurtling forward. Luigi squints, raising his hammer above his head, ready to strike at whatever newest enemy he'll be certain to pound into the ground.
“Luigi?” An all-too familiar voice yelps from across the chamber. “What in the - “ his brother stammers, rushing towards him, stopping short a few feet away. “Why the hell do you look like Duke Murdock?”
Luigi smashes his hammer down on one of those stupid skeletons, sending splinters everywhere. He turns to his brother, suddenly very aware of his tattered overalls, his soot-stained cap, the dark bags beneath his eyes. "What do you mean?” Luigi counters. “It's a great movie!"
"That's not the point, meatball head! What are you doing?" Mario gestures at the wild chaos unfolding between the escapees and the Koopa troops.
"I'm trying to run a rebellion here, big bro. You could stop standing there and help, you know."
"A rebellion, I - " Mario chuckles, jogging to his brother's side. "Why am I not surprised?"
With the arrival of Mario and his allies, the melee turns decidedly against the Koopas, who, sensing victory slipping through their claws, launch one last offensive of spikes and shells. Luigi and his brother get to work, slamming, punching, and pounding their enemies. It strikes Luigi that Mario looks like he knows what he’s doing, almost as if he’s had some kind of combat training, like he's the one trying to be Duke Murdock. He’s about to ask his brother about it when Mario stops, pulling, of all things, a flower from his overalls.
“Have you gone insane?” Luigi yells.
But he’s left speechless as his brother is enveloped by two quick flashes of light, his overalls changing from blue to white. Luigi's jaw drops open. He has seen a lot of weird crap in the last few days but his brother, performing real magic?
What is this place?
A moment later, Mario winds up, as if he were pitching for his high school baseball team again, letting loose a series of fireballs from his palm, which barrel into the Koopa forces, sending them flying like a set of ten-pins.
"Holy hell, bro!" Luigi exclaims. "You have got to teach me how to do that!"
"Oh no," Mario rockets another flaming missile towards a group of Spinys. "You remember the flambé incident that one Valentine's Day." Luigi groans, slamming his hammer into one of those gas mask monks who kidnapped him. "And the Benson burner in high school." Luigi groans again. "And the fuel injector in the van - "
"That one was not my fault!" Luigi exclaims over the whine of a spiky projectile which whizzes past his head, knocking his cap to the ground.
Mario’s eyes widen as he pulls Luigi towards him, spinning him around so they’re back-to-back.
"You're not going near fire," Mario says over his shoulder.
Too bad his fire gun gave out three levels ago, Luigi thinks, slashing his hammer into the gut of a large Koopa Trooper.
"Electricity, then," Luigi says as he makes a second parry with the hammer. The Koopa Trooper falls back, grunting.
"Wait, what?" Mario shoots him a look, throwing another fireball into the fray.
"Electricity. If you can shoot fireballs, I get to shoot electricity."
Mario gives an aggrieved sigh.
"I - no. First of all, that's not even possible. Second of all, no. And third of all…” Mario trails off, his features softening. The battle is on its last legs, penguins and mushrooms giving chase to a small group of Koopa stragglers, who scurry towards the nearest exit.
Mario turns, taking Luigi by his shoulders.
“You're taking this all really well, Luigi."
Luigi gives a wan smile, gaze finding the floor. "Bro, I've led a prison escape gang consisting of penguins, walking mushrooms, and one really messed-up star. We broke out from cages hanging over a pit of lava, stole weapons, and have fought our way up here ever since."
He doesn’t mention being chased through a nightmare hellscape by a pack of hungry skeletons. Doesn’t mention being kidnapped, hands bound, led by a rope through the Dark Land to meet almost certain death. He doesn’t mention the moustache.
His brother doesn’t need to know about all of that. It’s enough - more than enough - that he’s here.
Luigi’s chest tightens. "Nothing short of ghosts is going to surprise me at this point, bro," he laughs. It’s a wet, croaky sound.
Mario stares at his brother for a moment. All at once, he grabs Luigi, enveloping his brother in a fierce hug.
"Pasta brain,” Mario whispers, ragged, into Luigi's shoulder.
The tension from the last few days - the constant alert, the self-preservation, the seemingly never-ending threat of death - it all seeps away in the safety of his brother’s arms. So what if they’re marooned on some other world, other universe, far away from anything resembling Brooklyn? He’s got Mario and that’s all he needs.
"Pizza breath," Luigi replies softly.
Mario grips him tighter. "I'm so, so glad you're safe, bro."
I've missed you so much. Luigi returns the hug with equal intensity. "Me, too, Mario."
a row of einarrs because.... why not tbh.
honestly i just wanted to have a reference for his hair and skin colors at different ages. he changed a bit
details under cut
Tumblr media
toddler
born very light blond
still very baby
child
hair may start darkening, as is usual with most natural blondes.
turned out to be surprisingly good at sewing, placing him with the women at an earlier age than usual. :^)
he was trying to give his dress a more masculine tunic cut, because he liked it more for some reason. unfortunately, he did it maybe a little too well.
still a bit clueless about his gender situation, but Something Felt Off
really liked roleplaying... you will never guess what gender all his best characters were. (boys. they were all boys.)
teen
so apparently lye bleach was a thing?? anyway he probably did that with his hair at this point.
came out as a boy 🏳️‍⚧️
going by einarr for real now
father immediately accepted him, mother not so much.
constantly wearing an oversized capelet over his entire torso because he was dysphoric as hell.
fledgling vampire (age 24-40)
ah, the hubris of exploring on his own while the rest of the group were trying to pillage this mysteriously empty castle. it's an old ruin. and those just intrigue him a lot. they are fascinating to him
anyway so basically he ran into a vampire while going viking. ended up in a duel. died.
in his early vampire years, his growing bat form's white fur started to overtake his existing hair color. kinda similar to graying hair.
once he realized how hardy vampires were, did top surgery on himself with a sword.
then he had to stitch himself up. with his existing sewing skills - a skillset deemed to be very feminine at the time. something poetic about that i feel
stuck in a castle. doesn't escape until he's like 50
middle vampire (age 200-700)
hair has already gone fully pale a long time ago.
skin is getting paler. more purple in tone.
ears are slowly growing in size, gaining transparency along with it
however, has also figured out how to blend in with humans again at this time (through vampiric illusions that make him look mortal)
peasant for a while. growing dislike of kings and authority figures. ends up joining the pirates in his seventh (?) century
has been caught drinking blood from humans, has been caught stealing from the rich, and has been to jail several times. usually escaped pretty easily with vampire powers. has been responsible for at least one mass jailbreak
the look of his clothing actually shifted a lot over all these centuries, but this art wasn't really focused on clothes, so i just picked something basic
ancient vampire (900+)
skin gone blue. fangs gone long.
ears reached their max size a while ago.
gotten quite nostalgic; started to wear norse-style clothing in his own time again. it's comfy and familiar!
among the mortals it has been many centuries of trying to match contemporary fashions. genuinely enjoys working with textiles though, so it's no big deal. yeah he still does this.
cannot keep up a human disguise for more than a couple hours... maintaining an illusion gets exhausting when it's so many things at once.
mostly goes for fish blood these days. it's not the greatest blood, but he likes the taste of it the most and it's less of a hassle to get when he's at sea all the time.
avoids the greater vampire community. he feels it's too much drama all the time, all while they just tend to think of him as a hermit, and well. they're not wrong.
has been known to take some odd jobs here and there, pretending to be mortal.
i did not actually intend to write down this much but!! i just like him a lot. gotta stop myself from writing too much. there's so much more i could say about him, but we'd be here forever
CARAPACIAN RAMBLE POST
What exactly ARE carapacians? On the surface, the answer is obvious - they're chess guys! Originating in Problem Sleuth + Jailbreak, Carapacians are simply designed, and their designs often amount to a stickman rectangle with a round head.
In SBURB, Carapacians play two vital roles - fighting the doomed battle between Prospit and Derse, and acting as the "Exile" to a specific SBURB player. Exiles function much like the suggestion boxes/reader commands of interactive comics. From a metatextual point of view, the Exiles fill the role of the reader in this aspect, rooting for and attempting to help the protagonists.
(Most of the characters in Homestuck reflect an aspect of the fandom - Caliborn reflecting the "hatedom", as an example. I won't get into it here, but Homestuck is ultimately a conversation between reader and author.)
They are unaffected by prototyping, save for when they posess one of the Royal's Artifacts - a Queen's Ring, or a King's Sceptre. This causes them to take on all the qualities of the beings prototyped, thus gaining incredible levels of power (depending on the power level of the beings prototyped of course) and changing their apperance. Interestingly, while these Artifacts are typically used by the King/Queen, Pawns can use these items too, as seen with PM. This is clearly a reference to the chess rule of "Queening", when a pawn, if moved to the very end of the board, can ascend to queenhood and completely turn the tide of battle.
These chess motifs are seen throughout the Carapacians, and I assume that it ties into their culture + biology as well! WV was once a "Warweary Villein", which suggests that Carapacians in the Medium live under a feudal system, further reflected by the Archagents (functionally, bishops, to continue the chess theme) and the high-ranking roles of the King and Queen. PM "rises" above her role as a pawn and mail carrier to take on the role of queen, but casts it aside (along with the Ring) into the Forge, in order to complete the A2 humans' session.
On the subject of their biology, many people take "carapace", the main feature of their biology, to indicate "insect" or another form of arthopod. While that's extremely cool, their chess motifs and the fact that all Carapacians are cloned (and given a barcode of their genetic data) indicates that they are more like plastic dolls, toy chessets, if you will, which reflects the nature of their existence - to serve Prospit (and by extension, Skaia) /Derse in a predetermined war.
erm hehe i really love carapacians!! ^_^ let me know if you guys have any thoughts, i just wanted to ramble about a few things ive been thinking about
