5 DC Animes I want to see after My Adventures with Superman
Tumblr media
My Adventures with Superman opened the door for DC in a big way. Not only did it revitalize fans for more Superman content ahead of Superman: Legacy, but quickly put Jack Quaid up there in the conversation for best portrayal of Superman.
While that conversation is yet to be determined, I think the fact that this version of Superman connected with people made one thing clear, people are hungry for more quality animation.
Tumblr media
While I am excited at the potential of more Jack Quaid Superman, I think DC would be kicking themselves if they didn't branch out this universe and try to build to something greater.
I have 5 pitches for characters who I think should get a My Adventures with Superman style show, ideas of who could play them, and what they could bring to this already fantastic universe. Also I gave them all fun titles. Enjoy.
5. Mysteries of the Question
Tumblr media
The Question is a character many know from the hit DC show Justice League Unlimited. A wack job with a theory about who is pulling all the strings in the DC Universe, The Question is a ridiculously fun character I'm surprised hasn't been seen in a while.
Putting the Question at the center of a mystery and having to solve cases day to day would make for classic television, all while setting it in a crazy DC world.
Tumblr media
The cop chasing him could be the 2nd Question: Renee Montoya, and the mystery could be something as big as an incoming alien invasion or as small as who is leaving riddles across Gotham? Hell he could be after Amanda Waller.
Tumblr media
He can run into other detectives like Detective Chimp, Martian Manhunter, even the Batman, and through this side character we introduce half the Justice League.
I'd love a comedian like Charlie Day to voice this mad man, but a good friend of mine brought up Will Arnett and I can't unhear it. The role could be overly dramatic and silly, but can go to the sad levels of Bojack Horseman. He'd be perfect for this universe.
Tumblr media
Having a detective who needs to get the a major story out could lead him to our three favorite journalists, making a fun mini crossover imminent.
Tumblr media
4. Strange Tales from Arkham Asylum
Tumblr media
While What If? Is not my favorite MCU project, the premise itself is quite fun. A narrator telling warped tales of stories we know in a freshing new take.
I'd like to take that concept and add it to DC by exploring Batman's Rogues Gallery in one off, anthology episodes narrated by one Hugo Strange.
Fan favorite characters like Clayface, Mister Freeze, Catwoman, and yes, even The Joker, can be introduced via their backstory with exciting different voice actors, all leading to a breakout in Arkham.
Tumblr media
I'd like this to serve as a partial retelling but also reimagining of new characters with an emphasis on the creepy, the macabre, but also the sympathy. I want this to fix the mistakes of past villains in My Adventures with Superman and make them more 3 dimensional and iconic.
For Strange we need a maniacal evil voice who can narrate and keep us captivated. I like Chiwetel Ejiofor for this, and will be happy for the inmates to take him down by the end.
Tumblr media
3. Evil-Doers fear the Wrath of Wonder Woman
Tumblr media
I'm having fun with these titles.
It is incredibly insane we do not have a definitive Wonder Woman show. I'd like a classic Spectacular Spider-Man or My Adventures with Superman style show centered around ya girl Wonder Woman.
Tumblr media
Ares, Giganta, or Cheetah can be the main villain. Hell make her main antagonist Black Adam, but having a magical god character immediately makes the world bigger and the threats greater.
Tumblr media
She can run into Shazam (due to their god powers) and round out the League more, but really this is just a project that should already exist. It's wild it doesn't.
Since it is voice acting and we can go any which way with it, I love the voice of Ming Na-Wen. Having a powerful Disney Princess playing Diana also feels appropriate, and brings a sort of wisdom to the League.
Tumblr media
2. Blue Beetle Back in School
Tumblr media
Blue Beetle in a character basically built for anime.
With the overall critic and audience reviews being positive but the film underperforming, it's clear Blue Beetle has an audience that can steadily grow over time. I think animation is a great way to softly continue the story without it technically being in continuity.
The story should center around Jaime continuing college post getting the scarab, and meeting young heroes like himself along the way all while trying to having a normal life. Classic superhero stuff.
This leaves room for it to be part of any universe you want it to be, or mostly be true, or not at all. Either way, we grow with the character of Blue Beetle, and await his return in the DCU.
This could be a fun way to flesh out the young heroes of the DC universe: Robin, Raven, Cyborg, etc.
Tumblr media
It could also start a fun trend of Xolo playing the character across mediums. It's clear Xolo Maridueña loves the character, and if the voice fits, why change it? If Mark Hamill can play the Trickster across animation and live action, so can Xolo.
Tumblr media
1. Green Lantern: Cosmic Chronicles
Tumblr media
The character done most dirty since his live action debut, Green Lantern could add dynamic interesting fighting to an anime universe. Take Atom Eve from Invincible and her spin-off episode.
Tumblr media
Using that type of animation and fluid fight choreography would make for excellent television.
Although we already have a fantastic Green Lantern show (Green Lantern the animated series) with an excellent narrative, I think introducing more Lanterns and wider universe of DC aliens could be really fun. Martians, Thanagarians, Lobo, Mongul, etc all trying to be contained by Lanterns but failing horribly would be awesome. It could all leading to an alien invasion on Earth, putting them directly in line with Superman.
Tumblr media
A Green Lantern show could rejuvenate faith in Lanterns before its release, and lead up to the big anime crossover we know we all need.
While I'd love to see all Lanterns, I think having Hal Jordan at the center of it and bringing in others down the line is a good way to go.
Alan Ritchson has played Aquaman, Hawk and even Raphael in Ninja Turtles. A little more hard headed Jordan could be fun to pit against Jack Quaids more hopeful Superman.
Tumblr media
While all these shows should get made, I think Lanterns is the most likely. Honestly, I'd be happy to see anything more in the DC Anime Universe.

Resident Evil Fancast #2
So, I've already did a Fancast before but it was like...I don't know, years ago? I still like it but now I'm taking more of a "realistic approach" choosing actors that could actually play the characters based on their Hollywood Status and age. I will also be remembering the Remakes when choosing the actors
Ps: I really like the cast of Welcome to Raccoon City and would totally watch them again in a sequel. I just choose not to put any of them here
Chris Redfield
So, for Chris my first choice was Gabriel Basso who stars in The Night Agent, I haven't watched the show but I think he matches the look with the character. He also have that aura of being serious but chill and trustworthy, he is in his late 20's so basically around the same age Chris is in Re1. The second actor is Marco Pigossi, a talented Brazilian actor that stared in Tidelands and will be in the spin-off of The Boys. He also matches the physical description of the character, and also have that aura that Gabriel also have plus those gorgeous charming and kind eyes. And Lastly I picked Dj Cotrona, he is the older of all, being in his 40's, I like his role in the From dusk till dawn tv series and doesn't hurt that he also matches the physical appearance of the character plus he really looks like a military man I don't know.
Tumblr media
Jill Valentine
Just by looking at Daniela Melchior you understand why I pick her, he is also in her 20's and have all the talent and charisma necessary to play the character . The second is Adria Arjona cuz I really love the idea of a Latina playing Jill, she in her 30's and has those damn eyes that just get you. Lauren Cohan is a bit older for the role, but she would be the perfect Jill to DJ Cotrona, if the movie wanted to portray them as older characters. Btw, the four protagonists I choose people around the same age to play the characters because I think it would be weird to have a 40'old Chris with a 20'something.
Tumblr media
Claire Redfield
Annalise Basso look more like the og Claire Redfield, she is also the youngest of the 3 actresses here and have very kind and loving eyes and features, and she is the youngest sister of Gabriel Basso and I think it would be pretty dope to see two siblings play the Redfield Siblings. Nell Tiger Free looks more like remake Claire, she have that "insta model" look and a "cool girl" vibe, she stars in Servant and is a very promising actress, and for all the Game of Thrones fans, she also played Myrcella Baratheon on the show. And Lastly, Sophie Skelton is the oldest on them, a talented actress that starts in Outlander , her looks is kind of a mix between old and new Claire, she is also have a more mature posture and would be the Claire to Lauren Cohan and DJ Cotrona Jill and Chris
Tumblr media
Leon Kennedy
Nicholas Hamilton, the bully in It would be a nice Leon to Annalise's Claire, since they both worked together before in Captain Fantastic. Second we have Nicholas Galatzine , who stars in Red, white and royal blue...I mean look at him, he really looks like remake Leon. Brenton Thwaites is the oldest of them and just have that friendly nice guy face. I think Leon needs someone who could appear/convey adorableness and capable inexperience and bravery. And I think these three fit this.
Tumblr media
Albert Wesker
Anthony Starr is the Wesker we always dream of seeing in the big screen and I will die on that hill. Warren Cole is good second choice, I mean he is a himbo in Yellowjackets but he also appeared in The Wilds and damn, he was intimidating there as the homophobic father. Lastly we have Kevin Janssen, I mean, look at him, he just have a villain face c'mon. Also he did portray a real, terrifying bad guy in Revenge (the good revenge corn movie)
Tumblr media
For RE1 I think of Kiernan Shipka, Nick Offerman and Jack Quaid as Rebecca, Barry and Brad.
Tumblr media
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 we have Jung Ho-yeon as Ada but I also think that Gemma Chan would rock that role. Sterling K Brown is Marvin c'mon. Violet McGraw as Sherry. Andy Garcia would be terrify good was Chef Bryan Iron. And Teddy Sears and Tricia Helder as William and Annette Birkin
Tumblr media
Resident Evil 3
Diego Boneta as Carlos Oliveira, just look at the gorgeous hair and beard. Stephen Lang as Mikhail Victor. Igor Jijikine would make Nikolai look even more intimidating. And Trevante Rhodes as Tyrell Patrick
Tumblr media
Resident Evil Code Veronica
Ewan Mitchell and Phia Saban from House of the Dragon would be so good as Alfred and Alexia Ashford. Jaeden Martell is basically at the same age of Steve and I think his character needs to be played by a young actor anyway. Tenoch Huerta would be a interesting Rodrigo Juan Raval
Tumblr media
Resident Evil 4
Diego Luna would be the perfect cast for Luis Será, not only he looks the part but also has that riz. Sophie Thatcher is a extremely talented young actress who would be able to portray a more develop and cool Ashley, like the one we saw in the Remake. Paula Patton was a nice voice, is elegant and would be a nice choice for Hunnigan, another actress that I think could play the role is Jennifer Connelly. Alan Ritchson as Krauser, I don't think I need to sell this one. Mads Mikkelsen is such an imposing presence on scene, he would be amazing as Osmund Sadler. And Lastly, Jack Gleeson, our beloved Jeffrey Baratheon, would be a perfect Ramon Salazar

The Boys (Season 3)
As Homelander begins to crack, the Boys are becoming more and more desperate to bring him down. Even if it means bringing on a missing sup who is just as bad as him.
The Boys is easily not only one of the best superhero shows but is currently one of the best shows on TV. As with many shows, the quality begins to drop dramatically. Safe to say, The Boys avoid this curse and deliver their most over-the-top and diabolic season to date. The story, the writing, and the characters are maniacal and intelligent. The writers are not afraid to take risks. They constantly push the characters and audience to their limits with their perfect satire on the superhero genre. From a superhero orgy to bringing to life Ant-man going up Thanos's butt, they are willing to take risks that Marvel and DC will never take.
As with any great series comes some great acting. All of the returning actors, Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, and many others give fantastic performances. Jensen Ackles was a performance that surprised me. I did not this he could break the Supernatural mold and take on a more serious performance, but he did. I just wish there was more of him this season and hope to see his character in the future. However, the real MVP this season was Anthony Starr. He is easily portraying one of the best villains I've ever seen, and his performance is worthy of an Emmy.
As with the previous seasons, they keep up the bloody goriness in the most spectacular way. The VFX is getting better and better with each season. The soundtrack is kickass. Overall, the Boys improved this season in almost every way.
I am giving The Boys (Season 3), an A.

Okay, only one of my friends has seen the new Scream, so I need to ramble it on here now that I’ve seen it twice. - this is mostly stuff I love.D Going under the cut, assuming that feature still functions it’s been a long ass time since I’ve bothered to use one. Spoilers for Scream (2022) ahead, duh. Official ranking of the Scream movies: 1, 5, 4, 2, 3
I loved Tara getting the killer question wrong because she forgot Stu. You and the last three movies, girl. Glad this movie remembers Stu fucking existed!
The whole opening was great, very effective and set the tone well. And Jenna Ortega is fucking great in this entire movie, what a great first attack. And a twist that it wasn’t a successful kill.
It is truly remarkable how well the movie kept my interest and introduced new characters, all that without actually directly showing us Sidney, Dewey, or Gale.
I don’t love Melissa Barrera as a lead, like maybe she just kinda pales to Jenna Ortega’s performance. Idk. Sam is...fine. But. She is hot. And I do feel for the character.
Jack Quaid looks a lot like Joshua Jackson and I found the similarity in facial structure super distracting first time, second time not so much.
Okay I know Kyle Gallner has had a career outside of Veronica Mars but the moment I saw him I was like, “Beaver?!” Super random to have him be Stu’s nephew when we never knew he had a sister, but, oh well. Gotta make connections somehow.
Speaking of Joshua Jackson, love Tara watching Dawson’s Creek in the hospital - I only realized THIS WEEK that Kevin Williamson wrote Scream (1996) and created/showran Dawson’s Creek, so I appreciated the nod.
When we do finally see Dewey, he’s got Tatum’s ashes on his mantle. Other than Patrick Warburton’s douchey bodyguard character in 3, that is legit the first acknowledgement in a later Scream movie that Dewey lost his fucking little sister.
Also! Second viewing I couldn’t believe I missed it the first time around, but Richie is staring WIDE EYED at Dewey when he answers the door. Like, you’re so focused on Sam and Dewey you’re not really meant to notice, but Jack Quaid doing a stellar job of showing that he is SO not new to the Stab franchise and he knows exactly how big of a deal the guy that just answered the door is.
Dewey’s texts to Gale kjsdfkasdjf;klj. And we can assume that Sidney having children with Mark means Mark from 3, which makes the complete lack of mention of him in 4 very funny to me.
Love seeing Martha Meeks, even if she was introduced in the worst movie of the franchise. The connection of having the “new Randy” type character be his niece is great. And the shrine to Randy - again, just...so much love for the previous films in the new one.
“That cut deep” oh, Dewey.
Didn’t notice the first time and only noticed this time bc I heard someone mention it in between viewings, but when Richie is watching the YouTube video dissing Stab 8, on the sidebar there’s an interview with survivor Kirby (from 4), and that’s a fun “oh hey she survived!” easter egg.
Again, Jenna Ortega being fucking fantastic as Tara, the fear and pain as she’s trying to get away despite her injuries? So good.
Dewey’s death hurt more the second time. :( But I do see exactly why it really was necessary for the story.
Gale’s response :( :( :( :(
I just love seeing Sidney and Gale together and it broke my heart that Dewey wasn’t a part of it, but again, I get it. :(
STU’S HOUSE. I was into the movie enough the first time that like it was niggling in my head, but I didn’t quite get there until Sidney and Gale were like oh my god about where they were. It made me really happy, it just...you can tell this whole fucking movie was a love letter to the original.
Way out of order now but Judy and Wes’s kill scene? I know we all expect the fake outs, but the fake outs were so good! and so fucked up to see Wes setting up dinner for his mom who we know is dead right outside the fucking door.
Okay this is all I got for the moment just. I fucking loved it.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND May 17, 2019  - JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3, A DOG’S JOURNEY, THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR
Well, the summer is grinding along at a rather slow pace. Granted, it’s only the third or fourth official weekend, depending on when you started counting, and if you live in New York City, it doesn’t really feel like summer at all, but as has been the case since starting my beat at The Beat, I hope people will be reading this for the limited releases and repertory stuff, which I try to make fairly comprehensive and complete.
Tumblr media
Normally, I wouldn’t be too impressed with Lionsgate’s decision to release Keanu Reeves’ JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM in the summer, but surprise, surprise, I actually liked this one. A LOT! I already reviewed the movie for The Beat, a review which you can read here, but I do think that most of the people who liked the first movie will like this one, too, as it adds the likes of Halle Berry, Asia Kate Dillon  (Orange is the New Black) and Mark Dacascos to flesh out the mythology while sending John Wick on the run as he’s excommunicated from the assassin’s guild.
I don’t have as much an opinion about the doggie sequel A DOG’S JOURNEY (Universal). I mean, I like dogs just fine, but I never got around to seeing A Dog’s Purpose, and I’m not sure I can follow this movie’s high-concept premise without having seen it. Apparently, a dog dies and then keeps coming back as another dog in order to protect Dennis Quaid’s daughter… no, I don’t get how that works either, but I’ll probably never see this.
The other movie I’ve seen which opens Friday is Ry Russo-Young’s THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR (Warner Bros./MGM), based on the novel by Nicola Yoon, starring Yara Shahidi (black-ish,grown-ish) and Charles Melton from Riverdale. If you know me at all, then you can probably guess that I’ve never seen those shows, but I have seen Russo-Young’s other films, and she’s a director that’s definitely grown on me as she’s taken on YA adaptations. I’m not going to write a full review of this one (due to time constraints and illness) but I was generally mixed on it. I thought the two young actors were fantastic, and this was a perfectly nice romantic film that generally used its New York locations well, but there were definitely parts where I was just bored and not that into the story. It’s a shame, because I usually buy into the whole fate and destiny thing, especially when it come to romance, but this one just gets silly at times.
You can find out what I think of the above film’s box office prospects over at The Beat.
LIMITED RELEASES
This is a very busy week for limited releases with a lot of things coming out of the woodwork at the last minute… and honestly, most of what I’ve seen is just okay, at best.
Tumblr media
Jack O’Connell plays Cameron Todd Willingham in Ed Zwick’s TRIAL BY FIRE (Roadside Attractions), based on the true story of the Texas man accused of murdering his three young daughters via arson in 1991. He spent 12 years on Death Row before his case found its way to writer Elizabeth Gilbert, played by Laura Dern, who tries to negate the evidence against Willingham. I wanted to like this movie more than I did, because it is an interesting story with a decent script written by Oscar winner Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious), based on an article by New Yorker writer David Grann (apparently all of his articles become movies, so he has a good agent, huh?). The movie is generally okay, mainly due to the fantastic rounded performance by O’Connell but it’s also quite long-winded and didn’t need to be over two hours to get its point across.
Joanna Hogg’s autobiographical British indie THE SOUVENIR (A24) stars Honor Swinton Byrne (yes, that’s Tilda’s daughter) as film school student Julie who encounters and gets involved with a gregarious and opinionated older man named named Anthony (Tom Burke) who turns out to be a heroin junkie who effectively sabotages the film she’s trying to get made. While I can generally understand what Hogg was trying to do with this movie, I found it very long and drawn-out, and I was even more shocked to learn that this was meant to be the first of a two-part movie, but no, I won’t bother with Part 2 even if it does star Robert Pattinson, probably as another dick who tries to derail Julie’s career, cause that’s what men do.
The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra returns to India for the romantic drama PHOTOGRAPH (Amazon) about Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a man from a poor village who takes a picture of student named Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) and sends it to his grandma, saying it’s his new girlfriend, so she’ll get off his back about marrying. Rafi sends his grandma a picture of Miloni, but then has to convince Miloni to play along and meet his grandmother when she comes to Mumbai. As the two spend more time getting to know each other, a romance begins. It’s a nice movie, maybe not quite as great as The Lunchbox, but a nice date night movie for sure.
Opening at the Metrograph, which is in the midst of a Ryusuke Hamaguchi retrospective, is the Japanese filmmaker’s most recent film ASAKO I AND II (Grasshopper Films), based on the novel by Tomoka Shibasaki. It begins with a romance between a shy girl from (Asako, played by Erika Karata) who falls for a young man named Baku (Masahiro Higashide), who suddenly vanishes on her. She ends up moving to Tokyo and meeting another man named Ryohei, who is Baku’s spitting image – maybe because he’s also played by Higashide. A relationship develops between them until Asako learns what happened to Baku. This is definitely a strange but mostly satisfying romance story that would be a great date night double feature of Photograph.
From Sweden comes Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja’s sci-fi thriller ANIARA (Magnet Releasing), which takes place on the title spaceship which is taking the three-week journey to Mars full of thousands of passengers when it’s knocked off course. The problem is that it might take years to get back on course, which immediately throws everyone on board into a panic. At the center of it is Emelie Jonsson’s woman who runs a “Mima chamber” where people can go to relax, a chamber that gets increasingly more busy until it breaks down and then things just get completely crazy.  If you wondered what Passengersmight have been like if Gaspar Noe directed it then Aniarais the movie for you, but I did like Jonsson’s character arc as she ends up starting a relationship with a woman officer on the ship and where that story goes.
Karen Gillan stars in Collin Schiffli’s ALL CREATURES HERE BELOW (Samuel Goldwyn), which is written by and co-stars David Dastmalchian from Ant-Manand other films. It deals with a couple living in poverty, forcing him to break the law, as they set off to find refuge in Kansas City. I haven’t seen it but it sounds interesting with that casting.
Shirley Jackson’s 1962 mystery novel WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE (Brainstorm Media)is adapted by filmmaker Stacie Passon with an all-star cast including Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan and Crispin Glover. Farmiga plays Merricat who lives with her sister Constance (Daddario) and uncle (Glover), the only survivors of a poisonic that killed the rest of their family five years earlier. When their cousin Charles (Stan) arrives, asking about the family’s finances, it begins a battle for control as tragedy looms.
Now playingat the Film Forum is The Third Wife (Film Movement), Ash Mayfair’s Vietnamese drama set in the 19th Century about a 14-year-old named May, who becomes the third wife of a much older man. With a mostly female cast and crew, the film has drawn comparisons to Zhang Yimou’s Raise the Red Lantern and some of the flashbacks in The Joy Luck Club (which I recently rewatched and cried my eyes out, but don’t tell anyone).
Then opening Friday at the Film Forum is Andrey Paunov’s documentary Walking on Water (Kino Lorber), about artist Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude, who had built some of the most amazing large-scale installations including the famous “The Gates” in Central Park and their most recent project “The Floating Piers” over Lake Iseo in Italy. The movie will open in L.A. and San Fran next Friday, May 24.
Johnny Depp stars in Wayne Roberts’ The Professor (Saban Films), a movie that seems to be getting dumped into theaters after a DirecTV release. Depp plays Richard, a college lecturer who discovers he has six months to live so he turns into a party animal, much to the shock of his wife (Rosemarie DeWitt) and chancellor (Ron Livingston). Also costarring Zoey Deutch, it opens in select cities.
Kevin and Michael Goetz’s A Violent Separation (Screen Media) stars Brenton Thwaites as Norman Young, deputy of a midwstern town who is forced to arrest his older brother Ray (Ben Robson) for murder. Things get more difficult when Norman gets involved with the victim’s younger sister (Alycia Debnam-Carey). It opens at New York’s Cinema Village and a few other theaters as well as On Demand.
Now playing at the Roxy Cinema in New York is Matt Hinton’s doc Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury (Abramorama) about the small-town band Luxury, whose career almost ended in a wreck, but who continue to make records even as three members become priests.
Another music-related doc out this week is the Cordero Brothers thriller Room 37 - The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders (Cleopatra Entertainment), which as you might guess from the title is about famed rocker Johnny Thunders (Leo Ramsay) and how his trip to New Orleans to get his life together turned deadly.
This week’s Bollywood offering is Aki Ali’s De De Pyaar De, starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh in a London-based love triangle.
Opening in New York this Friday, then in L.A. May 24 and VOD June 21 is Eddie Alcazar’s Perfect  (Breaker Films), exec. produced by Steven Soderbergh, which stars Garrett Wareing as a troubled young man sent to a clinic by his mother (Abbie Cornish) to help with his dark visions.
Next up is Rachel Carey’s Ask for Jane  (Level Film) starring Cait Cortelyou in a timely movie set in Chicago 1969 where abortion is punishable by prison and two women try to find a doctor to help a pregnant student at the University of Chicago has tried to kill herself. The two women end up forming the Jane Collective, an organization that helps women get safe abortions.
Asa Butterfield, Finn Cole, Hermione Corfield, Michael Sheen, Margot Robbie, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg star in Crispian Mills’ horror-comedy Slaughterhouse Rulez set in a British boarding school where monsters have been unleashed from a sinkhole. The movie was a hit in England but is barely getting a release in the States even with that amazing cast.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Not much of note on Netflix except Kate Melville’s rom-com Good Sam, a movie about a reporter who is trying to find a stranger who is leaving bags of money all around New York City.
I probably haven’t been paying enough attention to the streaming service MUBU, but in honor of the Cannes Film Festival that started this week, the service is doing a “Cannes Takeover” which includes Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park, Crisi Piu’s The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Alejandro Innaritu’s Amores Perrosand other films that broke out of the French film festival.
REPERTORY

Delaney will be at the Metrograph for Delaneymania, a collection of films selected by him including This Island Earth (1955), Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal  (1957), Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus  (1950), as well as Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil: Director’s Cut  (1958). The series will also include Fred Barney Taylor’s doc about Delany called The Polymath and more. Sadly, the Trilogies series ends Thursday, but the Film Forum will screen a 4k restoration of Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad (1961), and this weekend’s Film Forum Jr.offering is Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands  (1990), starring Johnny Depp. Dan Streible is back with his eclectic of shorts called More Orphans of New York.

This week, the Aero begins the Passion of Pier Paolo Pasolini series (probably in conjunction with Abel Ferrara’s film, which finally gets a theatrical release) with a series of double features: Solo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) and Pigsty (1969) on Thursday, The Decameron  (1970) and Oedipus Rex (1967) on Friday, The Canterbury Tales (1971) and Teorema (1968) on Saturday, and Arabian Nights (1974)and Medea (1969) on Sunday. On Monday, they’ll screen a rare 35mm print of Pasonlini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew(1964). Since I really enjoyed Ferrara’s new film starring Willem Dafoe, I’m bummed I missed the Metrograph’s retrospective of Pasolini last year, but this is a good chance to see this prolific Italian filmmaker’s often-controversial work.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
Another great series begins at the Quad this weekend with Fighting Mad: German Genre Films from the Margins, based around Dominik Graf’s two-part documentary A Journey Through German Film. Graf programmed the series with Olaf Müller, who presents a few of the screenings. It’s a pretty rich series with no films that I personally have had a chance to see – I have a couple screeners to watch – but there are sure to be a few gems in there if you have time to see some of the 17 movies.
IFC CENTER (NYC)
Waverly Midnights: ParentalGuidance  will screen Roman Polanski’s horror classicRosemary’s Baby (1968) and James Cameron’s Aliens (again). BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):
Black 90s: A Turning Point in American Cinema continues this weekend with Waiting to Exhale, The Five Heartbeats, Fear of a Black Hat, House Party, a 20thAnniversary screening of The Best Man and a lot more. It’s a really good series with a lot of movies worth checking out.
MOMA (NYC):
Abel Ferrara: Unrated continues with 1986’s Crime Story on Wednesday, 1993’s Dangerous Game on Thursday, Welcome to New York  (2014) on Sunday and Piazza Vittorio (2017) and 4:44 Last Day on Earth  (2011) on Sunday. ROXY CINEMA (NYC)
A new addition! The theater in the Roxy Hotel in Tribeca is showing Joanna Hogg’s earlier film Archipelego (2010), as well as Sally Potter’s 1992 film Orlando in 35mm!

Intense Natural Disaster Motion Pictures
In the last while planet, more than usual, has actually been ravaged with globe vast all-natural disasters. It is extremely depressing that these awful natural devastating sensations are exempt only to the silver screen but are below with us in real life. Catastrophes such as tidal waves, volcanoes, tornadoes, earthquakes, forest fires, floods and also international warming are only as well actual as well as in our backyards. In my opinion this is far more stressful than any kind of horror film with ghosts, zombies, vampires and also aliens. All these dreadful world wide catastrophes has actually prompted me into diving into the motion picture world of natural disaster movies. The more recent films with computer boosted innovation definitely places you on the side of your chair with its excellent motion picture effects. Whether flying a little airplane in between falling skies scrappers or driving over a breaking down freeway off-ramp, you are moving left to best and eluding along with the horrified cast. Let us not forget the older disaster films where the high quality of acting prevailed over there limited unique effects. Nevertheless the all-natural catastrophe movies are well worth watching in theater for their complete effects in view and also audio compared to ... I do not understand, a love film.
Tumblr media
Below are a few of my preferred natural calamity motion pictures from the very early days of movie theater to now ... The Last days Of Pompeii - 1935 This is an excellent motion picture, it gets involved in the individual lives of the citizens of Pompeii in 79 AD just to be interfered with by a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The real unexpected calamity happens near completion of the film, unlike Dante's height. Starring: Preston Foster, Basil Rathbone, Alan Hale, David Holt, John Wood. San Francisco - 1936 5:13 get on April 18, 1906 is when the devastating San Francisco quake happened. A great flick, however of all the natural catastrophe flicks from this era this set is a little as well patriotic, an indication of the times. Yes, this film is a musical, once again an indicator of the times. Starring: Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, Spencer Tracy, Jack Holt (pertaining to David from above film?). The Devil At 4 O'clock - 1961 In this timeless flick 3 convicts finish up on a private island of Talua, apparently concerning five hundred miles from Tahiti. The island is conquered with a kids's leper healthcare facility run by two priests. Unexpectedly the islands intense volcano erupts as well as at some point the three convicts rescue the hospital's youngsters and personnel. A very gripping movie. Starring: Frank Sinatra, Kerwin Mathews, Spencer Tracy, Barbara Luna, Bernie Hamilton, Gregoire Aslan. Tornado - 1996 Great deals of activity and a little humor tossed right into the mix of this terrific natural catastrophe film. The movie has to do with a team of hurricane storm chasers that are attempting to perfect a twister information gathering instrument to predict the assault of these devastating phenomenons. The film magic impacts are terrific. Starring: Bill Paxton, Todd Field, Helen Hunt, Jami Gertz . Dante's Peak - 1997 A Mount St. Helen's story where the community, Dante's Peak is nestled on a mountainside in the breathtaking Washington state simply below an inactive volcano. As this hill starts to show signs of eruption, a volcanologist and also the community's mayor attempt to convince everyone in the area that they are in trouble. No one believes them up until the volcano erupts and also its too late ... then the big action loaded escape. Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, Grant Heslov, Charles Hallahan. The Day After Tomorrow - 2004 Because of worldwide heating a devastating result onto earth occurs with extreme weather such as a tsunamis as well as hurricanes. And, all these storms were supported by international cooling in which whatever promptly iced up. The next Ice Age. This is a wonderful movie with outstanding special impacts. Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ian Holm, Dennis Quaid, Emmy Rossum . 2012 - 2009 If we are also talking regarding exceptional special effects in movies, this set wins hands down. Functioning with the ideology of Mayanism, worldwide cataclysmic events materialize in 2012. Great deals of damage such as quakes and unusual volcanic eruptions. In my viewpoint this one is the ideal of all the all-natural disaster flicks and also well worth viewing in a movie theater. Starring: John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt. I should have enjoyed Dante's Peak as well as Twister concerning a thousand times. The high intense adventure ride of natural calamity films does get my heart pumping, possibly much more so than many scary flicks. I presume that is why I appreciate these flicks just a bit extra. All these dreadful globe broad calamities has motivated me right into delving right into the motion picture world of all-natural catastrophe movies. The newer motion pictures with computer improved modern technology absolutely places you on the side of your chair with its great flick results. An excellent movie, yet of all the all-natural catastrophe motion pictures from this period this one is a little too patriotic, an indication of the times.
