well regardless of where you got it from i really love that line, i think it adds an interesting angle to their relationship. what do you think bro knew about the nature of the game and dave’s destiny for him to think of raising dave that way? im also curious about the subject matter of the fics you may have gotten inspiration from
thanks i think so too
i dont remember unfortunately; in regards to the fics. i dont really read fics nowadays and i do tend to read short ones to avoid This happening- where i absorb something and forget about it
more about bro under cut
i feel like bro knew some things; i like to keep certain parts of the 'game' aspect of their reality away from them
like for example: bro doesn't know EVERYTHING about what hes supposed to do. like he wasnt spawned in with I am A Guardian in his brain; he was a whole ass human person for 24 years until he got dave
growing up a lot of his information came from cal because since he was destined to be a guardian, he had nagging feelings in the back of his mind telling him to do certain things: get this apartment, do this that way, etc. and cal just enforced those
i think dirk's reason for raising dave that way is a combintion of the fact that thats the only way cal(iborn) referred to dave and that bro was never allowed to actually bond with dave (because caliborn made him believe that platonic affection is in fact not platonic at all and is instead sexual[the implications when bro is constantly carrying around cal with his arms around his neck btw. insane.])
i've talked about it a lil bit with input from error707-thatdude (whos training to dooooo... something w psychological development of kids or something? sorry i forgored) on stream and the lack of interaction/affection can be potentially fatal to human children
so every time dirk wanted to do what honestly, his instincts were telling him to do (hold dave, be gentle [even if stiff]) , he wasn't able to because he had caliborn in his ear whispering that he was being deeply fucking inappropriate with his goddamn son which . Jesus Christ. (ive come to the conclusion bc of this that the daves we see in canon are the daves that made it past childhood, as error707 said: the exceptions)
the fact that caliborn constantly told him about how dave was the knight and he needed to be the knight. he needed to enter the medium. if he didn't enter the medium then everything that dirk's entire life has been leading up to has been a disappointment, a mistake, and he doesn't want to disappoint his very dear best friend cal does he? hee hee hee.
he also told him about how dave is SUPPOSED to be. cool, stoic. that kinda stuff, bc calibrn has a bit of a gay thing for both of them im sure.
+ the deep feeling inside of dirk that he Knew cal was right (something something; destiny/fate/will of the universe/etc), that dirk existed to do this; to get cal into the medium, to get dave into the medium, to make them stronger, led to dirk thinking of dave as his goal instead of anything remotely resembling family-
all of that accumulates into his brain dissassociating dave from himself as family and instead as a goal and a figure of something he NEEDS to polish or it wont work when the gear is inserted into the frame
things like this are delicate and they HAVE to be taken special care of during assembly, or you'll be left with nothing. (go watch how its made- wristwatches. its like that.)
sorry if all this doesnt make sense; feel free to ask for clarification and ill happily provide

Phullo there, I’d like to ask you a question! I hope I won’t be such a bothersome.
So, I’m planning to write a story about Laughingstock and since I find your storytelling very pleasing I figured it’d be a great idea to ask for your advice about the writing!
My Idea in general for this story is just Howdy taking a day off from working in his bodega. And basically, he’ll be just wearing normal clothes.. shocking truly.
And thennn, Barnaby and Howdy accidentally stumbled into each other’s path. They later then of course had a very long conversation that lasted until evening maybe.
Of course there’ll be some fishy moments like them looking at each other with goggly eyes and other cheesy romantic nonsense- but it’s just mainly them having their usual conversation with a ‘couple’ of jokes here and there. It’s supposed to be a sweet memory for them to remember basically.
So, what I’m really trying to ask you for is- how the heck do you start a story exactly and not make it into just the dialogues? Like, I want my story to be kind of long but I’m afraid it’ll be just them, y’know, talking and I really don’t want it to be boring.. therefore, I really need your help.
I am so sorry if it’s such a bad timing considering the fact that you just had an interview which I am very proud for you for that! Even if it didn’t go as expected at least you did good half of it.
Soo, yeah! I’d very much appreciate your advice and I am sooo sorry that this was soo long!!! And again, a bad timing too.. but hey if you got any time, please consider answering. Thank you..
Also any response yet? On the interview of course.
hmmm... in my experience and Knowledge Accumulated Over The Years via reading And writing... the best place to start is to just drop in. no story introduction, no "it was a dark and stormy night", just Start. it sounds like your story begins with Howdy taking the day off, so maybe kick off with him getting ready / choosing an outfit, or w/ him reflexively almost opening the store before he stops and chides himself for almost forgetting that he's taking the day off
to combat the dialogue, maybe detail him leaving the bodega to go into the neighborhood. what does he see? hear? feel both physically and mentally? is there anyone else out and about? set the scene! ive been struggling with this too lately since i haven't seriously written in a while and i haven't been reading actual books
WHICH! IMPORTANT TANGENTS!! read well-written books, Not fanfic! im not saying dont read fanfic ever or i'd be the world's biggest hypocrite, but also read actual books. it's important to study how published authors write, how stories are structured, dialogue and action. because these books have more often then not gone through a Rigorous screening process. multiple drafts, beta readers, publishers reading it with great scrutiny before agreeing to publish - of course there are exceptions, but a lot of books are the highest quality they can be, and will outshine most fics. because, and i say all of this as good things, fics are unregulated. most dont have beta readers. a lot are from amateur authors new to the scene. there will be spelling mistakes, weird grammar & sentence structure, etc - most fics have Entirely different writing styles from each other. so if you only read fanfic, That is what your brain will learn, and it's gonna be harder for you to write. published books have less variation in styles, and the styles are subtler. there's less spelling mistakes if any, so your spelling will improve. your internal vocabulary will expand. even if you don't consciously study what you read, your brain will pick up on & internalize patterns, how action works, how dialogue works, how to structure a story, all that good stuff. if you want, i can recommend well-written books! i've been an avid reader since... like, ever. i've got recs galore! you can tell me your preferred genre & literary interest and i'll probably have something for you! and if you're not big on books, well... get out of your comfort zone lmao, books are fucking awesome and i guarantee there are plenty out there that you would love.
and when you're writing dialogue, intersperse it with little actions or the main povs' internal dialogue. if there's a natural lull in the conversation, explore that lull! what do the characters do in this moment? what's going on around them? sprinkle bits of setting in so that your reader knows where they are and what's going on.
plus, exploring the non-dialogue sections of your story can, and often will, spark inspiration in your brain for scenes and actions to fill out the story if you want it to be long (but also! if you just want to write the scene of their conversation, that's the beauty of fanfic - there's no requirements. do whatever you want lmao). when Howdy is going into town, maybe Wally calls him over for a quick pose - does Howdy say yes or no, and how does that decision change the story? maybe Julie invites him to join her in a game, or Eddie stops to talk to Howdy about him being out and about. maybe there are some complaints over the bodega not being open. what's the lead-up to Howdy and Barnaby running into each other? do they literally run into each other? what happens when they do? those are just a few possibilities of many!
remember, when you're writing, you're that story's god. you can do literally fucking anything. you decide what the characters do, where they go, what happens in their world. that mindset should help you bolster the plot instead of just "these two characters have a conversation", yk?
i hope this helps!

do you have any tips for someone who wants to make their own regalia? I've always wanted to make my own fancy shawl but I have no idea where to start 😞
Ive actually already posted some tips as well here, so go have a look at part one on tips and tricks for making regalia :) I'm still not especially good at sewing, but I HAVE done some fancy shawl designing & sewing before, & I know these tips and tricks from my family sewing a lot as well (so I have the information, but the success in execution on my part is still debatable dvdfudhf). So here's what I know:
There's actually some fancy shawl regalia patterns for sewing if you're not confident in designing the actual cut & style of the fabric yourself! Try find one if you'd like somewhere to have a template.
If you're more inclined to design something yourself, try sketching/coloring out some designs & color palettes. Even if you're using a template, having an idea for what colors you want for the designs & where will help a lot beforehand. Making something like a pinterest board for inspo can help (but remember not to directly & exactly copy designs you see on pre-existing fancy shawl regalias) like, what base color do you want your shawl to be? What about fringe? Is the skirt a different color? Stuff like that. Even play around with the same color palette but arranged differently. (Also, I suggest bringing your finalized design with you when you go shopping for fabric so you can get something as close as possible)
^connected to the above, but if you have a set color palette in mind, this could also help you with any matching beadwork. Beadwork could potentially be even more expensive than the rest of your outfit if you buy it separately or even if you bead it yourself (but this could depend on different things). So if you're like me & not bougie, then having a color palette set could help you accumulate beadwork overtime. Like you might buy one hair barrette for $20, then some earrings for $35, and then make your own hair ties: they won't be a matching set, but looking for beadwork of similar color palettes to your regalia will help bring it together. & don't worry, lots of dancers do this. Lots of dancers even have mismatching beadwork/accessories (like me lol). It's also not uncommon to have accessories that a sewn from fabric instead of beadwork/quillwork so you could do this too!
As mentioned in part one, if you don't have access to canvas or you just wanna save some money, you can use old jeans to cut up & use for things like your cape & vest, a cloth belt, & your leggings. Youd put your colored/chosen fabric on top of the jeans, & the jeans won't be seen. If you need, double up the jeans for stability/structure.
I suggest not skimping out & using jeans for moccasins (particularly the bottom) bc your footwear needs to be tough, and jeans will absolutely get demolished if you use them for moccasins. Use canvas and/or leather for moccasins, especially the bottom/soles.
You can pretty much use any fabric you want for your regalia, but satin/silks & cotton are probably the most common for fancy shawl dancers to use, and note that various other fabrics might come with their own pros and cons. Ideally you want something not too heavy, breathable, comfortable, and if you can, easily washable & iron safe. This just makes the sewing process a bit easier, and maintenance less hectic. But for things like the fabrics you might use for the designs on your shawl, go ham & use whatever you think looks pretty
General regalia sewing tips: I suggest making your skirt/dress length to about your calves if you want to show off your moccasins & leggings. Also, having a skirt that is wider at the bottom helps with leg movement & dancing. Make your shawl a bit longer than your actual spread arms length. Your ribbons/fringe can also be sewn up a little on the sides of your shawl rather than just the bottom. Remember to hem the raw edge of your fabric so it doesn't fray, either a folded or rolled em or bias tape works well.
Btw the "cape" is the part that hangs over your fancy shawl in the back, on your back, and its usually attached to your vest or is a yoke (so no vest, & this style usually incorporates a belt instead).
Plumes are very in fashion right now for fancy shawl dancers, but regular eagle feathers are also used, & were more popular in the earlier 2000s, so both work fine.
So I hope that helps!! Good luck!!

Update: no I’m not dead, I just want to address some things.
Hey everyone, I just want to address a lot of things that happened over these past couple weeks, no I am not dead or did not get myself killed, I want to be completely up forward, and honest with everyone.
But first, I’ll address the big elephant in the room: probably around 2 to 3 weeks ago. I almost tried to kill myself, the reason I had almost done that was because there was so much stress going on around me (schoolwork, world news and even just straight up scared for the future) and all these events accumulated into to the point where felt like I thought that was the right thing to. Now I realize that it wasn’t the right thing to do. it would’ve been way worse because I had many people that were worried about me. I want to apologize for the people that I have worried. There has been a lot of difficult stuff these past couple of days (it could be roughly because of my weight gain, and I have been really insecure about my body which is the second reason)
The second reason is that I legitimately felt really insecure about my body. I felt like a big, flat slob weight that secure around. ( I weigh myself at 209 pounds when I used to be at at least 199 pounds) I just thought that was a big accomplishment at the time right now I just wanted to lose all this weight it just has been really difficult for myself to give up all these food and wine. Mom and Dad forced me to eat every day because they want me to finish it up, they are not bad people or anything, but I need to be aware of how much I eat
Possibly the reason that is that I’m probably gonna get a lot of flack for this, but I just given up hope for this world, and I just wanted to generally take a break from every social media platform but there’s a lot of people on the Internet that apparently say that your a monster if you do that taking a break from world news sort of thing. It just made me feel so guilty all around and I just don’t want people to be upset. I just felt legitimately stressed out over everything to the point where basically almost did it.  I had wanted to stay positive even after all the stuff that’s been going on, but I feel like I fail. And made all of you guys scared it just made me feel guilty as well for trying to literally kms over everything. Ive Probably just need a break in general from all the bad stuff that is happening.
I just wish there was a lot of positive stuff happening around in the world but apparently that is not even possible anymore, is already gone off the deep end so much to the point where I feel kinda hopeless for everything, I wish there was this restart in humanity as a whole, I just wish there was no war at all. I just wish I didnt desperately doomscroll so much. I wish I didn’t have this mentality, but that’s not even freaking possible anymore. This whole world has gone to shit and I’m sick of all of this world in general. I’ll try to keep living as a whole for my family, friends and everyone, but It’s a hard reality that we live in sadly. I’m not going to do really horrible stuff to myself. Maybe I just need to take a break off of here for probably ever.
I’m really sorry for not posting these past couple weeks. I have been trying to make sure that something like this never happened again. I’ll try to come back with a better mindset. I promise <3
thank you for reading everyone. Have a good one

your custom cassettes are really really cool! ive been thinking about making custom cassettes for a bit, would you be willing to share what kind of paper you used for the label stickers and j-cards? also where do you get blank cassettes from? ive been looking at cassettecomeback but i was wondering if there was a better option.
Thanks a lot! They're really fun to make hehe
So full disclosure: I run a merch shop for my webcomic and I make most of my stuff myself in my studio. I've been doing this for the better part of ten years and over that time I've accumulated quite a bit of specialized, expensive equipment like the photo printer and cutting machine I use to make my cassette ephemera. THAT SAID mixtapes don't necessarily need all that!! Unless you're running a bootleg business on etsy or somethin I don't think you and your friends gotta run out and spend a ton of money to make these (beyond tracking down a deck and a player, obviously).
Unfortunately most of these items are found on Amazon because I'm a professional artist trying to Live, but if that's something you'd rather avoid buying through I'm listing the brick and mortar places I can find them when I need to for whatever reason!
My j-cards are just the 8x10 glossy photo paper from Pen & Gear, it's usually less than ten bucks a pack at walmart lmao. I use it with an inkjet photo printer! There are plenty of laser printer options out there though, which is probably the type non-artists have access to. Honestly I think the look of black ink on colored copy paper is super cool for handmade tapes, especially between friends.
My sticker paper was a bitch to find and I'm not sure if it would be useful without my specific equipment, but it's this glossy adhesive photo paper from some rando company called LDProducts. Literally just called "Sticker Photo Paper" pf. It's more expensive but I get it in stacks of a hundred because I print tons of stickers for my shop. Again, glossy adhesive paper might not be useful without a big boy printer but MATTE sticker paper is everywhere, that's also pretty common to find at walmart or at the very least at an office supply store; you can print on it or even get out some markers (not sure i'd suggest anything besides ink tho, I'd be worried it could come off and damage the player). I design the labels in clip studio and then load them into cricut so it's super easy to get the right shape every time, but if you're Determined you could get out a measuring tape and an xacto knife and get similar results.
I've only found my tapes on amazon unfortunately, and it's been a while since I bought any because I sort of inherited a bunch of sealed ones when my dad died and i'm still going through them lol. Almost all my custom ones are 90 minute Sony High Fidelity, last I checked you could order them in packs of five or ten but I'm not sure what the prices are like rn. If you REALLY want to get fancy with colored shells/custom lengths i did find this cool site you can order from, Duplication.ca, but the shipping is kinda rough. One of these days I wanna make some cassettes for my webcomic and I'll drop some money on some pretty ones then, but for now the Sonys are treating me fine so I haven't dug too deep.
I hope something in here is useful! I'm always happy to share what I know but again, I'm very fortunate to have access to quite a bit of stuff most people don't and I try to be up front about it alskdjf. Cassettes are best when they're sorta janky and handmade tho, it's kind of the whole point, and if they're just for you or someone you care about then marking them with a sharpie and masking tape is just as cool in my opinion. probably cooler. everybody should put music on physical media and trade it i think.

ive just been, accumulating doodles and drawings of this undercooked zelda au of mine and i told myself i’d just post them already here’s the pitch: a green hoodie’d girl from a Modern Day Hyrule is pushed into adventure after her gal pal goes missing in the chaos of Ancient Hyrule literally invading from the past
deets n doodles under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bit of a  gnarly sketch but like, you know -- that one zelda 1 piece. the idea is that the past and present have been melded together -- skyscrapers and metropolitan architecture fused with classic zelda fantasy elements
I like the idea of the two aesthetics clashing, but also the culture shock of two generations forced to interact -- even if its just turning Zelda tropes on their head a lil
Tumblr media
A part of the culture clash is in the title, too-- a lot of the classic Zelda roles and cycles have been forgotten or eroded with time; at some point, the unending cycle of link and zelda vs ganon just...stopped, and the kingdom was able to move on and become something new.
But a Zelda caught in the transition phase of history marching forward acts with a little less wisdom than she should and uses Forbidden Magic to grasp time itself and craft a future more to her liking, where she isn’t a historical footnote for some bored teens to get bad grades writing essays about.
see because she doesn't want to be the forgotten monarch
Tumblr media
Zelda is our antagonist, Ganon is a Chill Pigman, and with a different hero, our Link gets shunted to the support role.
taking a page from grimoire weiss the king of red lions, in the chaos of everything Link is rendered a spirit inhabiting a magitek gauntlet, where he can do little but guide our Hero Girl and complain when she silently sasses his guidance
Tumblr media
and like, its a rad magitek gauntlet hes trapped in, so like, it can do cool item stuff too
Tumblr media
naem can tell you this is something ive been chewing on for, months, though i...don’t really have anything concrete for it sdlhfk. It simply brings me joy ;v;

Hello!! Ive been a big fan of your art for a while now and I really adore your use of colour to shade/make compositions (like in your pfp piece!! (of jack and tim on the blue/orange background) it’s one of my favs i admire it and think ‘how did this wonderful artist come up with this’)
so i suppose i was wondering if you had any tips on colour choice, or what your thought process is behind picking colours or textures (like the water-like lines from the aforementioned pfp) for a work? thank youu sm <3
Hello! First of all, thank you so much for your kind words, it means a world to me! Although I usually just go with the flow and usage of any means to achieve my idea in art, I tried to at least pick something, that might help, but it`s very far off from professional advice.
firstly, even if it was said a thousand times before, it`s best to get accustomed with the color wheel and color theory, because the use of color depends on the intended composition and mood of the drawing! For me personally, I like to use triadic and complementary palettes for my drawings, so the contrast is more visible and you have more freedom to play with the shades in the rendering process! Try to use colors that you associate with the mood that you want to have in your drawing, let them be your partner in telling the story, accents and the mood (like how I used opposite colors for the background behind Jack and Tim in the pfp)
Tumblr media
secondly, gradients and layer effects are a lot help! not only they can give you palette ideas, they help to accumulate the color that you already have!
Tumblr media
I don`t really know, what to say about the textures and stuff, other that forms can tell as much as colors can. Use references, your understanding of forms and patterns to set the right atmosphere in your work!
I really hope, that you will find my rambling helpful, and thank you so much again for your words and your questions!! If anything, you can always message me, and I'll try to explain things better!

Late night over analysation of Megatron and why I HC him as having BPD (2)
— From me (someone with BPD) and Alvie ( @alcorian ) who gladly listened to my weirdly written ramble lol
‼️Please note that im not a professional and I have difficulty expressing/explaining stuff. A lot of these things were also written at around 3-4am‼️
Tw : Mention of self-harm and drug use
First post over here : X
Anyway, let's get back into it.
6-Extreme emotional swings
Tumblr media
7-Chronic feelings of emptiness
Tumblr media
8-Explosive anger
This one is pretty self explanatory. Megatron struggles with his anger, it's intense and explosive and he can't always calm down. He loses control and gets aggressive, be it voluntary or not. It's mostly showed outward in many shows but almost never shown inward.
Except in the comics. Which is something I appreciate (from the scraps ive been able to read and other stuff written about comic Megs), Megatron isn't always angry at other people. He's angry at himself for everything.
9-Feeling suspicious or out of touch with reality
Being suspicious of everyone around him and paranoia are some pretty obvious things about Megatron. He's always had to be wary about everyone in his surroundings due to the way he's lived most of his life ; by never knowing when or who could kill him if he wasn't paying attention. He's never lived, he's always survived.
Due to all the stress he's accumulated (listen, you can't tell me im wrong about him being stressed), I can imagine Megatron disassociating from time to time. Be it during meetings or alone in his room, he'll disassociate.
Im losing a bit of inspiration/brain power to write so ill leave it at that.

sorry to anyone who has to see this HAHAHA i think it's a little fun to ramble to.. a void i guess. i'm typing this under the assumption no one's gonna read it, let alone find it, so, sure, i'll talk!
on pangytine, my current and only instagram account, i sometimes get these spontaneous urges to post a huge a long overdue thank-you paragraph to my followers on my story. gratitude for indulging my artistic endeavors when i still had tangypine. i just never did it because.. well it's kinda.. cheesy... i had no idea how to deliver it in a way that didn't seem dramatic or "humble" because cmon, i'm not that relevant. It felt a bit weird addressing it because it just made it seem like i was this huge influencer who suddenly disappeared (and yes i know i was technically considered a big artist on both ig and twitter but.. it's not like i was unique; i think.. the state of Fandom and the art community these past few years makes accumulating thousands of followers a little less unattainable, and i was one of those artists. and my work is not phenomenal- i did not leave an impact on the art community. but these nuances will just have to be generalized for now because i think you all know what i mean) and so i couldn't help but laugh and cringe and think, "i am not this relevant-" because i really wasn't. why make a big deal out of it?
but i can't help it being a little dramatic though, because i still get emails from my followers asking where i am, and i get comments and messages on pangytine ("i finally found you!"), and i even get messages from my shop's contact form! a shop that i've abandoned for months! and my heart swells. I don't want to dismiss that; i think i will always be a sensitive, emotional person and so stuff like this just makes me overwhelmed. it's sweet, and it will never fail to make me a little bit nostalgic and thankful. I will always have a soft spot for tangypine and my time spent in the anime + genshin communities… i dunno.. people are just so kind and i'm thankful i've encountered a lot of them
i've been a lot less.. chronically online (LOL) that the thought of having 200k followers is completely foreign to me. i forget that i had a huge following, that people actually looked at my stuff. I dont mean for this to come across as modesty though because i'm just being honest, truly. but this just makes the occasional "where are you? i miss your art" hit a little harder 🥲 i mean, i was able to somehow sell my art through tangypine. i was able to do commissions.. had so many say they loved my art- of course a part of me misses that. i don't think i yearn for it, and knowing that makes me a little sad.
i genuinely am thankful for every kind comment people have left me, and every kind message. I think i'm just ultimately thankful i had a kind following. people are so nice! and that's what i wanted to say, that's all ive always wanted to say before i deleted my accounts. here it is
aha and again i dont really expect anyone to see this (except maybe a few handful just because my very first post here has a whopping 4 notes, me included, and that genuinely shocked me HAHAHA). perhaps i just find closure in publishing these particular thoughts somewhere, and here they are sorry this is cringe to the people who read it. my friend once told me i'm notorious for overexplaining. This is will be the only time i get to say this, so gah whatever. i don't think i can bring myself to post this lengthy ramble on my more public account on instagram

if you do not mind me asking/pulling back the curtain - how did you become such an esteemed hughesologist? i assume this has been a several-years journey, how did it start? have you been collecting photos/links the whole time, or are you now going searching for things? i am very impressed. the library should be jealous
LMAO thank you it means a lot to be acknowledged for my craft. the answer is i have always been an obsessive information/content hoarder especially in terms of fandom (i recently found my journal from my childhood which had pages upon pages of handwritten miscellaneous tswift fun facts, and being Like This about harry potter was what got me diagnosed with autism at 13). after lurking and being very low stakes invested for a while i started getting fr obsessed with hockey in 2020 and then early 2021 i went full tunnel vision on jack. you will understand if youve seen the pics of him kneeling in front of ty and damon at training camp. i basically save everything relevant that gets posted, especially bc the devils in particular are so evil and constantly nuke their old social media posts, but i have also done a lot of searching for old stuff. my onedrive folder where i store stuff (excluding full games) is 116 GB and i have stuff in gdrive/external storage too im like fr unhinged. i'm still constantly searching for things and i still do find new to me stuff even tho ive been to the end of many ppls instagram tagged photos and twt mentions and google search results etc, but i would say i have probably seen the majority of what is out there. at this point when i find new to me things it's stuff that nobody is directly mentioned by name or tagged in. i have a Hughes Lore google doc thats like 50 pages, a timeline doc, and more. it feels kind of embarrassing to say write it all out like this bc i am fully aware that this is like, kind of creepy, but im physically incapable of being normal about my interests. mostly i was just keeping it all this accumulated information in my brain and cloud storage and priv twt for years but then i was like i suppose some other people would appreciate this stuff. and now here we are. genuinely if ppl ever have a question or are looking for something it is highly likely i can provide it and i want to be helpful :) so anyone can always just ask
also: ive thought about making a post detailing some of the little tricks i have up my sleeve for these purposes if thats something ppl would be interested in.

Can I ask how you started baking as a side hustle?
yeah! i started out mostly doing friends and familys bday cakes for free, and then i started getting asked by people who had tried the cakes. i just kind of put it out there that im available to do custom cakes for pretty cheap and it travels by word of mouth. when i was first trying to grow it, i also donated some cakes to events and brought them with my business cards for people to see, so if they liked the cake they could reach out. its still mostly friends-of-friends and acquaintances that order from me, and a lot of the time w close friends ill barter for it lol.
theres a LOT of people doing cakes out of their home, so my angle is to have my little unique things that stand out, like i do fancy labor-intensive icings that not a ton of people offer and i use unique flavors a lot. it's definitely not for everyone and i get that, but im not going for mass appeal, and i hear from a lot of people who hate normal american buttercream+sponge cake that they like what i do :3
my mom, who has experience w bookkeeping, helped me design a pricing sheet for ingredients, but theres also lots of online tools that will price ingredients and labor for you. i do have to pay myself less hourly for small cakes in order for my prices to mirror commercial bakeries more closely, because my shopping + cleanup time works differently. i typically make more per hour at my full time job unless im doing a huge wedding cake like today.
as far as training goes, ive worked as a cake decorator mostly since college. if youre gonna learn online, stay away from tiktok and mommy baking blogs PLEASE. and be wary of shortcut/hack techniques. if someone says theyve worked in commercial bakeries, their advice is probably solid. we have established techniques for a reason (usually structural integrity.) ive been thinking abt making tutorials myself but im lazy.
lastly, i've accumulated most of my tools from estate sales and thrift shops. i alwayssss check for baking stuff at those places. if u buy everything new from craft stores and stuff, itll be hard to even break even.
anyway sorry for the super long rambly response i hope literally any of this was the info u were wanting!
