Thoughts on the thunder wizard again.
Genuinely, I find Gale's relationship with Mystra to be fascinating when you consider all its facets. Unhealthy, imbalanced, definitely poisonous, but also very, very intricate with a lot of blurred edges to it. One of those things where you're both like "wow, what the hell, that's horrible" but also "that makes perfect sense for their characters, and while I would NEVER, I know why they would, and why it happened."
You've got a wizard who doesn't know what real love is, who thinks he's finally being shown it by the person he adores most. His greatest fantasy, his most potent joy, his most heartfelt aspirations, and they were all offered to him.
And he wants to see what all she's hiding from him, because of course he does. She's the keeper of all things forbidden to him. The empire of Netheril reached magical heights that will never be touched again, and all that knowledge is beyond her curtain. She loves him, right? Surely, if he proves himself enough, she'll let him grasp that power he so desperately wants.
And not even in the power-hungry sense! All that magic Mystra's locked up was accessible during Mystryl's reign. Think of all the answers to theories about the universe that are back there. Every question of "can this be done, and what would it do" would be answered, if he could just bargain hard enough.
She loves him, right?
Surely, if he proves himself enough...
And then, on the other hand, Mystra. Once Midnight, her human personality has been subsumed by the goddess of magic and her duty to the Weave. She has a responsibility to magic, she IS magic.
Then along comes this mortal boy who knows how to handle her Weave. Who doesn't try to wrestle with and dominate, who sings to it. He handles it with such ease and grace—it's not just that he could be Chosen, but he deserves it. To put her Weave in the hands of someone so intrinsically in tune with it, who understands its potential with a wonder like no other. Few enough can handle the raw power that comes with being Chosen, but this one? This one is perfect.
And he adores you. And you adore him, like one would a beautiful butterfly that's landed on their finger. And he's willing to be devoted to you in all things, not out of transaction like most of your worshipers are, but out of love for you, your craft, your magic. You're so deeply and utterly charmed by him.
And it's not like Mystra hasn't walked this path before.
She gives him what he desires, because what he desires is her. And, in a different way, she desires him. She wants him to be her representation in the world. She indulges his adoration with her own presence, and takes indulgence herself in mortal comforts. He's never satisfied with her answers, but who could blame him? She keeps a whole world away from mortals, because she knows what such unfettered power might bring about (again).
And the wizarding prodigy's ambition is lit (again).
And the height of power is reached for (again).
And she stops him (again, again, again).
She does care for him. She doesn't want to see her little butterfly burn himself, and she doesn't want to be the one to ruin those wings.
But then he's not a butterfly. He's a mortal, wielding a weapon of murder, of her murder, and he's brought it to her doorstep because she told him "no." And he's cut himself on it, he doesn't know what it is, but it's hurt him—and it's only a fraction of the hurt it could do to her. How dare he want her help after threatening her?
(He didn't mean to.)
(He only wanted to help.)
(He only wanted. How human.)
She doesn't help him. If he wants to pursue Karsus' weaponry, it's his responsibility, his hubris, that led him to injuring himself on it. She's furious. She's hurt. She's cold.
(What fools these mortals be.)
But then, there's a greater threat to her. Something that could drown the Material in Karsus' failings. And that little boy, who nicked himself on the sword he lifted, still wants her help.
It's a fair trade, isn't it? She'll forgive him, let him into her domain again, if he accepts his punishment and goes into battle for her. He picked up a sword, it's appropriate that he learns to use it in her name, right?
If he was telling the truth, he wouldn't hesitate. If he really wanted to serve her with the Netherese Orb, he would jump at the opportunity to do so. He would have to give up a few petty things in the process, ("petty," she calls mortality, as if family and home mean nothing, as if friends and love are finite. Because to her, they do mean nothing. Because to her, they are finite.) but it isn’t atonement without sacrifice, is it?
It's the tactical move. She's not above hurting one man to save a nation. It's not even the first time she's done it.
(Dornal Silverhand sends his regards.)
If he loves her, he'd die for her, because she'd let him into her paradise. If he doesn't love her, he won't, and she was justified in removing him from her grace.
He doesn't love her. Not anymore.
Does he hate her enough to try to take his dues?
Ambition has always been man's greatest folly.

I feel like The Father and Hell both understand and experience love in all the worst ways.
The Father sought to create a life form that would follow and love him unconditionally. It wasn't enough that he had a great cosmic kingdom of angels who are unquestioningly loyal, no, he needed something that knew suffering and mortality and the threat of oblivion, and would still find love at the end; love for him above all else. But after numerous implied failures at that, in his desperation, he instead created the threat of eternal damnation to force them to love him in order avert that fate. Lucifer's words must have been like a splash of cold water, but by the time he realized sheer magnitude of suffering he had unintentionally set into motion, it was too late. He could not destroy Hell; he could not stop the cycle of violence.
That guilt drove him to seek a death that, from the looks of it, eluded him in spite of the hollowness consuming him. And now he is... somewhere, helpless to stop his experiments from consuming one another and themselves in a glorious show of blood and violence.
And then there's Hell itself, who seems to recognize love as an act of violence and cruelty. It is something that derives joy only from the suffering of other living creatures. God gave it so many toys to hurt and break and reform, and Mankind gave it new ones. Why would it understand love as anything but? It gave Minos a facsimile of the son he is most ashamed of, and delighted when he cast it, once more, into a labyrinth. Gabriel flattened all the souls within it's confines beneath his heel and gave those that did bend false hopes.
Now there's V1, tearing its way through the remaining layers and creating a spectacle of violence like nothing Hell has ever witnessed before. How could it not love them all for all the entertainment they've provided?
But deep within its recesses, hidden away from the eyes of Heaven, there was a Gutterman. A machine built for war, who eventually came to love that which it gave it life at the cost of their own. Enough to give the human welded within their coffin the mercy that both Heaven and Hell had denied them; enough to write a single love letter to them, even knowing that it would never be read by its intended recipient.
So, as things turn out, you /can/ teach a machine to love. And they will understand and experience it more sincerely than God or Hell ever could.

Reading pulp fantasy and understanding how it shaped the fantasy genre is extremely fascinating because its like "oh, that's why every Strong Female Character heroine of the 80s-90s fantasy boom was Like That, huh"

Yukari can come off as a very different sort of character depending on what it is that you personally see underneath the layers of cryptic bullshit
for me, she kind of seems a little pathetic - in an endearing, lonely, and impotent sense, where she fails at making and keeping friends due to being, frankly, kind of awful to deal with on a personal level
Take, mainly, her interactions with Kasen in WaHH ch. 35
Tumblr media
To me, it seems like she doesn’t want to - or can’t - internalize that she and Kasen are not friends anymore. Even just before this panel, she plays off Kasen’s rejection like it’s a joke to her and glides past it.
And there’s different ways you can take even that interpretation. For instance it could be a power move, a display of dominance - she doesn’t afford Kasen enough agency to even consider Kasen cutting ties to be valid.
But for me it feels like it’s because it would hurt her too much. Kasen is a friend of very, very, very old. It’s not clear how long they’ve known each other, but they’ve both been active since at least the middle of the Heian era--if they’ve known each other for even just most of that time, Kasen and Yukari have been friends since even before Yukari met Yuyuko and have had, as Sages, all of Gensokyo’s history as a shared experience. It’s possible that Kasen is Yukari’s oldest still-present friend and the friend with whom she has experienced the most (although personally I’d suspect Okina goes back a little further, and has about equal claim to shared experiences).
That’s... a big void to fill. A great, and terrible pain. Especially for someone who, frankly, does not seem to have very many friends left that she can really relate to and even fewer that she can be unreservedly open with.
And what I see is someone who is simply not prepared or willing to deal with that pain. Someone who, to not be overtaken by her own loneliness, needs to convince herself that she and someone who wants nothing to do with her are still friends. Kasen will come back because she has to come back because she wasn’t really leaving.. or else that growing hole in Yukari’s heart will get a little bit larger than she can deal with.
That is the lens that I tend to view Yukari through.
(Of course, a lot of this flows from my interpretation of Perfect Memento as suggesting that Yukari is secretly human - I tend to see her as someone in way over her head, vulnerable and trapped in a web of deception meant to hide that vulnerability)
(as an aside, my other, contradictory, interpretation of this scene is, okay, first you take the fanon that Suika raised Kasen. Second you take the canon that Suika is possibly Yukari’s oldest friend. Third, you assume therefore that Yukari knows Kasen through Suika. Fourth, you conclude that Yukari thinks of Kasen like a step-daughter and thus is here exhibiting something between parental patience and parental lack of respect for autonomy)

there's an animorphs book (28, idk why i'm acting like i don't still have that shit memorized) where the animorphs hear the yeerks are developing like a pill or ray or other scifi whatsit that removes people's free will and the animorphs are like "holy shit if they crack this it's game over" and the entire time cassie is like "lol you idiots. free will is inherent to sentient creatures and cannot be removed while an individual still lives" and then at the end it turns out she's right and the yeerk scientists were faking their data because they were scared of their boss (a running theme in animorphs and one of my favorite bits because like yeah actually the idea that one of the stumbling blocks of a ruthless galactic empire would be internal dysfunction stemming from the megalomania of one of their highly ranked officers... absolutely tracks with actual reality). that's how i feel when people are like "can AI write a brilliant novel?"

listen i get where people are coming from when they say that nobody should have expected a radical overhaul of the shinobi system considering the series very squarely set up its main theme as not abandoning friends. that certainly was the setup. but i also think it would be inaccurate to say that the story as it evolved affirmed that refusing to abandon one's friends was the be-all and end-all fix for everything. i cannot emphasize this enough: it's not as though the prior generations we saw lacked devotion to their teammates. the problem was that the larger sociopolitical circumstances obstructed their ability to connect in one way or another. even naruto acknowledges at the land of iron that his and sasuke's positions made it impossible for them to reconcile. so for the series to do a 180 and assert that actually friendship was the solution all along (even though there have been no meaningful systemic changes, even though the source of these intergenerational conflicts has not been addressed) rings hollow. it's especially glaring that being violently beaten in a fight makes sasuke desert his quest for justice without any reservation -- therefore no ideological or political separation was bridged, sasuke was just made to forget what motivated him for the entire series' run. naruto and team 7 succeeding where their predecessors failed was not a function of anything they did differently, but mere narrative convenience.

So, I finished AC The Golden City. And I have thoughts:
Hytham is baby
Basim is a sassy tease
Hytham is bABY
Basim cares more easily for people than he cares to admit
Hytham is my boi, my big-hearted loving boi
Basim will most likely take anything you say he can't do, turn it into a challenge, and prove you wrong
HYTHAM QWQ
Basim calls Hytham "my friend", after almost every sentence <33
I didn't think I could love Basim's brain and Hytham's heart more
"In the grove you were elegant - the picture of grace," Basim said. "Now you fight like a vicious dog. I can't decide which version of you I like more."
"Really?" Basim grinned. "You know I do so love a challenge, Hytham."
"You'll be shocked, I'm sure, to learn that arrogance is a fault of mine." - Basim, and no, we're really not that shocked
"If we're lucky Isaac thinks he's taken me out of the fight." "Should you be out of the fight?" Hytham couldn't help but observe, as Basim winced again when he tied off the bandage. Basim smiled at him, and it was not a pleasant expression. "Your sense of humor is one of the many things I like about you, my friend."
