Die Kinder der Feen waren dafür bekannt, dass sie nicht nur die Schönheit ihrer Erschafferinnen erhalten haben, sondern auch ihre magische Ader. Viele Jahrhunderte kam immer mehr abstruser Aberglaube hinzu. Eine Schuppe der Flosse sorgte für Reichtum. Das Blut dieser Wesen konnte Wunden heilen. Ihre Tränen waren kostbar. Noch viel kostbarer allerdings war ein atmendes Exemplar, was man umbringen konnte. Nach der bitterlichen Jagd auf ihre Art haben sie sich zurückgezogen und den Menschen gemieden. Das allerdings war kein Leben für Daria. Sie wollte die Geschichten ihrer Schwestern sehen und selbst erleben. Sie wollte den Menschen sehen und die Welt außerhalb des Reißzahns. Daria wusste allerdings nicht, dass sie von einer Gefangenschaft in die nächste purzelte.

          IT TAKES IOVITA A MOMENT to remember where they are when they wake to the feeling of damp cloth being draped over skin and scale. it clicks when their eyes adjust to the dark and make out the shape of loni. I must have been tired, they think. they hadn’t even woke to her getting off of them. as if to agree with that thought, they feel their eyes slip shut again not a moment later, the mer offering nothing more than a soft grunt when she curls back up on top of them. try as they might to slip back into the quiet embrace of sleep, they’re pulled right back from it when she starts to shiver.

           chest falling and rising in a long sigh, they wonder if they should wiggle out from under her and try to start a fire again. some small part of them can’t believe she’s insisted on sleeping atop of them. it’s not the greatest place for her to be, especially since iovita has wet fabric draped over them. they might be able to do without it for the last few hours of the night, though. but, still -!

          “ you’re being stubborn, ” they finally mumble in her ear, not caring whether she’s awake enough or not to hear them. “ if you get hypothermia and die after I saved you, I will cross to the other side and steal you right back from under the ferryman’s nose. ” vision blurry and eyes only half-cracked open, they reach an arm out across the rock and manage to grab the very edge of a shirt sleeve and drag it closer. thankfully, a few more clothes come with it. each one they drape haphazardly over her, and tug away the wet cloth over their torso. they’d rather her go and curl up on all the dry fabric, instead, but considering she had gotten off of them only to come crawling back, iovita is already convinced that she won’t do that. instead they make sure the shirts are tucked in and then wrap an arm around her waist, turning their head to pillow their cheek back into their shoulder. “ now stop shivering. ”
