I wanted to know how do you interpret Tanya's gender. After reading chapter 58 of the manga i got the impression that she is definitely trans coded, but maybe thats just me
Very good question.
To be honest, when I think too hard about Tanya’s gender (and sexuality, for that matter) it gives me brain worms. Fun brain worms, but brain worms nonetheless. I can’t explain it. Everything she’s got going on is complicated as shit there’s way too much to think about.
Like, she was a man, but now she's a girl. But at some points she says she still sees herself as a man internally so is this MtFtM? How does that work. And if she accepts she's a woman now, is that just MtF or do we add more letters. More importantly: Was Being X being Transphobic or being the Greatest Trans Ally of All Time with the free divinely issued sex change.
Ok ok, jokes aside. Confession: I actually do not keep up with the manga, so I had to go find the chapter and read it first. Having read it now though, I see what you mean.
The conversation she has with the Salaryman/herself in that chapter really does read as essentially saying “I’ve accepted who I am now.” It’s a far cry from a much earlier part of the manga I remember where she has a breakdown about being a man/people seeing her as a girl.
A friend of mine was actually showing me stuff from more recent chapters of the manga (don’t know which chapter tragically, but I know it’s not currently translated to English) and from what I gathered of it, Being X was showing Tanya a dream of being back in her past life and in response she basically demanded to go back to being Tanya immediately. It is definitely not just you, I 100% see the trans-coding you’re talking about.
As for my personal interpretation of her gender, I touched very briefly on it once before, but I honestly think she wouldn’t want to label herself as anything. At first, this is out of hesitance and not wanting to acknowledge that anything might be ““wrong”” or ““different”” about her. Later on it turns into character growth, more along the lines of, “I don’t need the label to define me, I just am what I am/like what I like. I don’t care about it any more than that.” Yes this is 100% projection on my part. No, I won’t apologize for it lmao.
Of course, that's entirely my own headcanon. I definitely am not saying it’s the only way to interpret her, it’s just my personal thoughts. Especially since my opinion is subject to change on a dime depending on what I’m reading/working on myself. The Tanya gender is, in fact, transient, shifting like water.
Like. A transfem Tanya fic that focuses on her adapting to life in her new world and coming to discover she doesn’t actually hate her new body? I’d totally read that. I’ve seen a few fics that include that as a part of the narrative and those scenes of acceptance were among my favorite parts.
I get the feeling this is the route that the manga is going as well. It’s a bit of a shame that we don't have those aforementioned scenes in the light novel (or at least, I don't remember them), but I don’t think that Carlo Zen really intended that to be the focus/narrative in the first place. And honestly, I also think that’s a good thing because it allows for so much more room for interpretation and headcanon around Tanya’s character.
Anyway, the other direction is also compelling to me. A transmasc Tanya fic where, after feeling uncomfortable and hating how feminine he looks for years and years, he finally goes ‘Fuck this, I’m gonna go back to being a man’? I would read the fuck out of that too.
Could also be paired with him finally choosing to defect, where they think about it like, ‘Well there’s nothing to hold me back now, right? I don’t have to maintain appearances anymore. Also, since I’m defecting this would be a great way to hide myself. They’d all be looking for the wrong person. Two birds with one stone, how efficient.’ …Now we’re getting to fic ideas I won’t ever get to so it’s time to move on I think.
Semi-related to the Trans Tanya Concept, this actually brings me to a bit of a lore/headcanon/idea/question I want to present to the public for opinions. In Norden, during the inciting battle of the war, Tanya uses magic to “dope up” so she could enhance her strength and reaction time and kill pain. I took this to mean she used a formula to synthesize the narcotics/adrenaline hormone/whatever else directly into herself, right?
Can you see where I’m going with this? As long as you know which hormones to make, how they’re made up, and what quantities you need… Well, don’t you think magic HRT is completely possible? Of course, as I'm not sure it makes sense for Salaryman to have known the detailed specifics about it from the modern world, it would require a lot of in-universe research/science advancement for someone to actually do that, but theoretically...
The magic system in this universe has so much potential to be explored, I’m fascinated by what you can theoretically do with it. Although, this is long and off-topic already I think this should be the end, lol.
I think I talked too much? I’m sorry, you were probably not expecting such an answer. I told you, Tanya gives me brain worms (mental illness).

okay so from least to most likely:
sebastian -> he is such a soft spoken guy and i think that he wouldn't care too much about the little details. its very much jim & pam where all that matters is that you're getting married.
fernando -> this man is so unserious. if he had it his way yall would've had a shotgun wedding in las vegas. he could careless about the details, he just wants to be married to you.
nico -> i actually am not sure if that man would have a coherent thought all weekend. he's just by your side, making sure you don't lose your mind.
guanyu -> very cool, calm, & collected. very zen. i just think he'd be would stay glued to his seat, waiting to go where he is needed and for everything to start.
daniel -> i think hed just be excited. nervous, but super giddy about everything. he just wants to see you walk down the aisle, and kiss you when all is said and done.
kevin -> i don't think this man ever gets nervous. he'd be your rock all weekend. super levelheaded, which is exactly what you need. he's just happy to be there with you and the people he cares about most.
checo -> this man is probably drinking some tequila cocktail, only worried about his prep. not even selfishly he just knows he would be no help on his own. hed very much be your rock, will be there and do whatever you need him to if & when you ask + give direction.
valterri -> valterri would be attached to you all weekend until he couldnt be. and that would be enough to keep you & himself calm. i think he'd try to take on some of the planning to keep you unstressed but nothing crazy.
alex -> he'd been helping you plan from day one, and something tells me this man has back up plans on back up plans in case something goes awry. a bit controlling, but nothing psychotic. he's just prepared.
lando -> nervous, but nervous because he is a child and cannot for the life of him keep still so he tries to get involved with the set up and all that. not a bridezilla, but he would be asking 'why?' a lot because he blanked out during the planning. so he's genuinely clueless.
yuki -> he'd be a mess of nerves which i think would make him a bit like bridezilla, but nothing a bit of food can't fix. he just wants the day to be perfect because he wants your memory of it be just that– perfect.
esteban -> he wouldnt be like crazy involved but very much on you like, 'how can i help?' or 'is there anything you need me to do?' so yeah. he'll only freak if you freak, and he is doing everything in his power so you dont.
oscar -> this child would just be confused. but i think he's thoughtful enough to know how you'd like to things so if he sees smth not being executed properly, he'd definitely speak up about it.
logan -> same deal as oscar me thinks, but a little more confrontational. he is a white man, a white man. the privilege would jump OUT if needed.
nyck -> he knows just how you want things, so he'd be right by your side making sure everything is perfect. you guys would be co-bridezillas HAHA
pierre -> he def planned the wedding with you, and he has bits of the weekend that are all his own vision. so i know that he'd be hovering, making sure the people setting up are doing it just as he pictures it.
carlos -> this mf would be so nervous and also cannot keep still i think he'd start doing some of the work himself. i think he'd freak out just a little bit, wondering why things are moving fast enough.
max -> another man heavily involved with the planning, but more so he sits back and listens to what you have to say and gives input where he sees fit. and since he knows the plans, you will definitely catch this man morning of, trying to take charge like he's the wedding planner himself.
lewis -> lewis definitely took part in the planning, and also has back up plans on back up plans. but theyre back up for a reason, so he is sure to make sure everything goes according to plan. you both had a vision, and he'll make sure that vision comes to life.
mick -> he just wants the day to be perfect. i think this man would genuinely shed some tears if something didn't go according to plan. but it comes from a very pure place, and also the fact that hes a perfectionist.
lance -> nepo baby has taste & a vision. lance would 100% up and at em the entire weekend, making sure everything is where it needs to be. and like he made sure that he could take part in the set up. he is the boss that day, so that you can try to relax and only worry about the day of.
charles -> this little mouse would be PACING. he'd be on the phone with people to make sure everything is going to plan, not wanting you to deal with any of the loose ends. and i just know for a fact he has mama on speed dial for extra moral support.
george -> i just think he'd be worried all weekend because he doesn't want you to worry. but that just means he would freak himself and everyone else out in the process. similar to charles where he'd be on the phone all day, and lance where he'd be very hands on.

to be honest, i found youjo senki kind of disappointing? the premise is fun, but it proceeds to not do anything truly interesting with it, and it ends up kind of wehraboo-baity?
to be clear, i liked it, but idk. it'd be fun if she defected to the russy federation, or tried to leverage her military career to gain political influence, or engaged with the broader setting through some means other than the battlefield. i guess that would be a different show, in that case.
To be fair it's kinda a main point that she can't escape the battlefield despite her best (read: constantly misunderstood by other characters) efforts, the only reason she joined was to be in a better position knowing she'd be drafted as a frontline mage no matter what.
There's not much she can really do in the way of other options. Defection is unlikely, given all her resources (money specifically) is from the Imperial military and presumably in a Berun bank or something. And she's physically a child, so no one (outside of specific military personnel) would realistically take her seriously. Though, hopping on a boat to the US after withdrawing funds might be a possibility (one which *minor spoilers* the original webcomic actually contemplated at one point).
Politically, she runs into many of the same issues (youth, funds). And as a frontline mage who's ideas and elite battalion changed the direction of the war, in a military that prioritizes meritocracy, they'd never really let her be anywhere else but the frontline. However in a post-war or late-war setting it's absolutely possible, especially if she gets her story out to the masses and effectively spins it to frame her in the right lighting. Maybe she reconnects with the Veterans' club in Norden that the LN and manga show her interacting with.
Then again, that's why we have fanfic and fanart, to explore all the wider possibilities of the Youjo Senki universe that Carlo Zen never dived into or detailed. I will also add that after reading the LN's I'm less a fan of the anime too (Tanya is way too bloodthirsty/crazy compared to the source material), though I'm still fond of it since it introduced me to the series as a whole.

fav light novel only characters? like not animated or drawn in the manga yet
So this has been in my inbox for a couple months now and I think I can finally confidently answer it bc I have a couple of characters who I wanna talk about.
Spoiler warning: Due to this ask being related to characters only seen in the light novel there’s going to be spoilers under the read more! I talk about content as far ahead as novel 11. I think we’re safe on stuff from 12 tho!
If you want a no-spoiler summary: Colonel Calandro (not depicted here), Counselor Conrad, and Major Joachim
OK SO,
I think the main two that I like the most and are LN-Only so far are Colonel Calandro from Ildoa, who is the observer that ends up attached to the Salamander/Lergen Kampfgruppe on the eastern front and Counselor Conrad, the imperial diplomat that Lergen talks with a lot.
In Calandro’s case, he’s introduced I believe as early as book 6, so I think he’s probably the one of my favorites who is most likely to be in season 2, so I hope Studio Nut does well by him with a good design. In the sketches above, I decided against trying to make a design for him because 1) I got no ideas man and 2) I think (hope) he might show up in the anime soon so I’d like to hold off on drawing him until there’s an official one.
Anyway, a lot of his scenes are great when he’s attached to the Kampfgruppe. If I recall correctly, there’s this scene in one of the books (Book 7?) where he’s talking to Tanya as she’s making preparations to bombard what is obviously a church and he’s like “What are you doing? Isn’t that a war crime?” And Tanya just goes “No, no, it’s fine. They’re not openly displaying anywhere that this is a building used for religious purposes and even if they were, the other side hasn’t signed that treaty so it’s not like we have to adhere to it if they won’t.”
It’s such a funny scene. Tanya’s like, “Oh he’s concerned that we’re committing a crime. I should assuage him by telling him not to worry, we’ve managed to legally justify it.” And instead of any relief he’s just like “Oh my god what the fuck is wrong with them? Why would they ever think to circumvent treaties like this?”
They're funny as hell together and Tanya’s constant griping that she has to babysit him is so good, I hope we get to see it.
Also also a good scene with him is from the end of LN11 where Lergen calls him in the middle of the night, demanding to speak to him because it’s of vital importance. That ensuing conversation where Lergen’s basically like “I can’t say who’s calling, but you recognize me from the sound of my voice, right? Something’s going to happen. I’m really sorry, I can’t say anything more. Please just remember that I called, okay?” I’m so sorry… but it’s giving ‘Tragic Lovers Doomed To Breakup By Circumstances They Can’t Control’ vibes.
It is now my firmly set headcanon that Lergen and Calandro were lovers throughout and in spite of the war and when the time came for Lergen to choose whether to betray Calandro or his country, he chose to betray Calandro, something he feels immensely guilty about. I know it isn’t what Carlo Zen was trying to convey at ALL, but unfortunately that’s what I got from it. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk, moving on.
I guess next up is Counselor Conrad, the Empire’s diplomat who we first meet in LN10 I think? If we don’t get any content of him, I’ll literally cry. Depending on how far season 2 gets us in the story, we may not end up seeing Conrad and that’s so sad to me. There is a scene from LN10 that I absolutely need adapted into the anime. It’s like 160ish pages in. It’s that scene where Tanya, Lergen, and Conrad are talking with each other and Conrad turns to Lergen and gestures at Tanya and says “How did you raise this?” and Tanya’s like “????”
There is another scene where Lergen describes Conrad as handsome, and because of these two scenes, the delusional headcanon has sprung up that these two eventually end up in a relationship and Tanya is their daughter. I’ve mentioned it in another post. A friend of mine actually talks about Conrad (& Lergen and Tanya) in more detail in her post here. And hey, while I’m recommending posts about Conrad, look at all of these too okay?
Conrad actually has an official design in the novel artworks, so I based my above sketch around that. Here are the few canon images we have of him. Interestingly, in the text he's described as having blue eyes at some point, but the colored version we have has them as brown. These drawings come from Books 10 & 11 I believe?
Ok, last one, for minor characters, there’s Major Joachim who we meet around the end of LN11, who becomes Lergen’s subordinate. I think the best way to describe him is that he’s kind of a boyfailure in the way that Grantz is (that is to say before Grantz got some character development and became somewhat competent). He’s a cutie, I do hope we get some scenes of him.
I did actually do a little sketch of Joachim as we saw above. That one for some reason just came to me very easily, unlike Calandro. Here was my prelim sketch idea:
And I think that’s about it for now. If you note that all of these characters are in some way related to Lergen, um… Well, I can’t help myself really. We know by now he’s one of my favorites so I like characters associated with him too.
