Chapter IX - Flourish
Juvia’s gaze aimlessly fell to the metal bars that meandered around the edge of the tunnels. The ten-metre fall loomed at her feet, inviting her to take another step. Its gloomy shadows enticed her to swing her legs over, straddling the metal between her thighs until she could no longer feel the ground beneath her.
Jump.
Her eyes would roll backwards as she was brought back into the tunnel. The wind fights against her hair. Her skin burns from the force and she’s taken by the void. Before she could test those thoughts, she is interrupted by the clatter of Erza’s boots.
“If you want to die, do it somewhere else.” The Commander’s scarlet eyes flickered between the drop and Juvia’s staggering figure. “I’m busy as it is already.”
“Why did you pair me with Gajeel?” Erza stopped in her tracks. “All my opponents have been in higher ranks,” Juvia stammered. “I don’t see how that’s fair.” Erza immediately swirls her head to face the drifter.
“I’m always fair,” she hissed. Raising a hand, she slipped a finger down Juvia’s cheek. “I gave you the opportunity to climb the ranks.” Juvia flinched from her nail scraping down her bruised skin. “If you bothered to fight properly, you would’ve rosen the ranks and we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now, would we?” Her breath hammered against Juvia’s face. “You’ve gotten plenty of help already from a certain someone.” Juvia gulped in response. “Does that answer your question?”
Juvia gave her a small nod and moved away uneasily.
“Good,” Erza smiled. She turned her head to leave, allowing her hair to follow her like a blaze. “Oh, I forgot to tell you.” Juvia flinched as she felt her face burn. Erza’s lips adorned an intense red tint as she let a tongue flicker against her upper lip. “Bora is alive.”
Juvia winced as a ringing punctured her ears. “You’ll pay. You’ll pay. You’ll pay” She was once again faced with the disfigured man who taunted her with a playful smile. Its flesh gleamed bright red and patches of skin peeled away, revealing the face of a normal man. His features twisted from blotches of red and reverted back to an ordinary man. Juvia couldn’t help but approach him carefully, started by his transformation. She raised a hand in shock, but was knocked over her feet as a stench tickled her nose, sending a rush of sulphur into her oesophagus. She lurched over to cough. A sting at her shoulder caught her motionless. She convulsed as she found a familiar dagger hanging out from her flesh, sending blood running down her body. Before she could recover her posture, the man twisted his neck to meet her face-to-face.
“Juvia Lockser,” it shrieked, “you’ll pay.”
Juvia screamed as a fist suddenly hammered against the man’s face repeatedly. With every hit, his face distorted into patches of red and black. Before she could stop what was happening, she realised the man was the one that tried to throw her over the edge, and Gray had killed him.
A guttural sound escaped his lips and the man began to whimper, its lipless mouth formed a pool of blood before eventually dissipating away into its rotting body. A puddle of frayed skin and flesh piled into a viscous liquid that slithered into the earth.
Juvia collapsed as her legs gave out. Every moment since she has existed felt like a crime. She buried her head into her hands. An ache grappled at her chest and she let it lave over as she crumbled to the floor. Juvia stared at the reflection of herself on the tiled ground. Before she could take a look, she felt her stomach jab at her skin, as if trying to escape. Her own existence disgusted her. No longer was she able to cry away her pain and troubles. It wasn’t physically possible for her anymore. Dabbing her eyes with the back of her hand, she was surprised to find them dry. She was fearful of how weak she was. A sudden feeling of needing to be strong washed away the unrelenting pain in her shoulder.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
The trenches were silent. All the other recruits were in bed but Juvia stood at the centre of the training grounds. She formed her hand into a fist and lashed out onto a punching bag. Her bruised arms raised tirelessly, trying to match the speed she was constantly hit with. She felt her blood boil when she let Bora’s elbow slam into her face. Juvia threw out another punch, allowing the bag to sting her knuckles. His grip strangled her until she could no longer think straight. Her feet casted a blow to the rough fabric. A crude smile plastered across his face as he pierced the knife through her shoulder. She sent out an array of jabs, letting her blood race through her body. Her ragged breathing vibrated through her ribs, shaking her lungs rapidly. Her knuckles ached and her stomach clenched from the extraneous motion. Her shoulder was hammered with pain. However, she was too enraged to care. A shrill scream repeatedly encircled her, and she only accelerated her movements, desperate to drown everything out.
A cold hand suddenly enclosed her knuckles. Juvia jerked away in surprise and tumbled backwards. Her waist was enclosed by a strong arm and she found herself staring into Gray’s onyx eyes. A rush of heat flowed through her face as she found her palm pressed to his chiselled chest. He gripped her body against his as he leaned down to inspect her.
“You’ve lost weight.”
Juvia promptly took a step to steady herself, pulling away from him. She patted down her clothes and swept a lock of stray hair behind her ear. “Why should that concern you?” she muttered.
He tousled his hair away from his eyes as they surveyed her cautiously. “You’re right, it doesn’t,” he replied bluntly.
Juvia felt her eyebrow twitch in annoyance. She wasn’t sure what these feelings were but they confused her. She wanted to stay in his arms, but she was too scared to be close. When he tipped his head closer towards her she wanted to entangle her hands in his hair and kiss him. But when he would nonchalantly touch her with an aloof demeanour, she wanted to slap him away.
“You…why are you talking to me?” Juvia unconsciously bit her lip. “I thought I said I didn’t want to see you ever again.”
Gray sighed as he brushed a hand behind his neck. “I don’t know.” His eyes drifted down to Juvia’s feet.
“That’s all you say,” Juvia muttered. “At least you could make up something.” She took a step back when he leaned down on a knee. “Anything.”
“I don’t know how to express myself,” he grumbled. His hands followed her stride and caught the loose shoelace between his fingers. “I’m… not sure why I act like this.” No words left Juvia’s mouth as she swallowed down a sob. She watched in silence as he lowered his head to fix her laces. Her heart pounded vehemently. She pressed a palm to her chest, a pointless attempt at calming it down. His charcoal locks swayed gently with every movement. Juvia suppressed the urge to touch his hair.
He eventually let go and revealed a tight ribbon at the centre of her shoe. “I do know one thing.” Juvia trembled as he rose, allowing his sculpted figure to tower over her. His gaze locked onto Juvia’s quivering eyes. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
Before Juvia could respond, she let out a yelp as he sent a swing at her leg and let her fall backwards. He caught her right as she prepared for a harsh collision.
“You need to be cautious of everyone,” he whispered. She quivered as his breath tickled her ear. “If your opponent is bigger than you, hit them in the diaphragm.” Juvia forgot how to breathe as she felt his grasp tighten around her waist. With a jerk of his arm, Juvia was pulled back upright.
He suddenly yanked her arms away from her sides and pinned them together with a steady grip. “When a man takes advantage of you in a fight,” he muttered, “remember to kick them in between the legs.” Before he could finish his sentence, he swung Juvia’s body around and rammed it against the wall. She screamed in response and her eyes widened as her back collided against Gray’s arm. Juvia struggled against his hold but he did not budge. His other free hand trailed down her hip and latched on her underthigh. Juvia mewled in response but quickly pressed her palm to her mouth in surprise.
“If someone is about to kick you, get closer to them.” He trailed her thigh with a thumb. “They won’t have enough room to land an accurate hit.” Juvia’s arms flailed desperately above her head. She swallowed hard as the sensation of his hand on her thigh started to leave a burning trail. His chest was pressed against hers and his other hand tightened around her hands. With an aggressive tug, Gray wrapped her leg around his waist. “Are you listening?”
Juvia blinked in shock, her lips moving to form words but nothing was uttered. His eyes were steady as he peered down at her. She felt every one of his exhales caress her cheek. With his body encased around her, every feature on his face was captivating. His lips were slightly chapped, but they invited her to lean in closer. The way his eyebrows furrowed together accentuated his charcoal gaze, sending her into a state of frenzy she never knew she had in her body. Even the scar etched on his forehead striked her heart.
Juvia found herself completely infatuated by Gray, the Exterminator who could kill her at any moment.

Chapter VIII - Tears
An ear-piercing ring sends Juvia down a tunnel of darkness. Her hair is thrown back and every strand slashes at her face as a powerful gust rushes through her locks. The familiar feeling of losing her balance and being discarded into a void penetrated her stomach. She felt a burn in her throat and an agonising screech that can’t seem to go away. She clenched her ears in terror as she fell.
Suddenly, a visceral figure entered her vision. She forces every joint in her body to look away, but her eyes helplessly dart to the glowing shadow and she feels her gut clench. A faceless recruit hovered right beside her, his lifeless body flailed in the air as it descended at the same speed as Juvia. His disfigured face was drenched in blood. Skin clad in a wet pool of mauve, his body was barely held together by what remained, Juvia could barely make out the man’s facial features.
To her horror, his slippery lips lifted into an unsettling smile. Juvia’s arms thrashed against the wind in an attempt to get away as the man began to gradually inch closer to her. His flesh scraped against his detached cheek as his smile widened. Words escaped his lifeless mouth. “You killed me, you bitch.” Its voice wailed, sending a high-pitched echo through the tunnel. Juvia suppressed a sickly feeling that almost escaped from her mouth. “How dare you.” Juvia’s eyes widened as the voice became deafening. “You’ll pay”.
Juvia’s eyes fluttered open as the sound of an alarm invaded her ear drums. Juvia felt her body stuck to the mattress. Sweat dripped from her forehead and pooled at her cheeks. She took a deep breath and could faintly smell the scent of citrus enveloping her body. It did not smell nice anymore now that she was back in the recruits’ chambers. Before she could realise what happened, she heard a booming voice.
“Up you get.” Juvia whipped her head up to find Gajeel standing at the end of her bed, arms crossed. “You’re going to be late at this rate,” he sighed. Behind him, the other recruits were hurriedly getting changed. “It’s time for the next round.” He tapped her bed frame gently with a gloved finger. “I’ll see you in the trenches.”
Erza’s heels create an ominous echo through the subterranean as she paced back and forth. Her eyebrows furrowed as she studied her watch. “Number twenty-three and forty-eight,” she barked. Two recruits immediately step forward from their positions. “One-hundred push-ups for being late.” The two exchanged concerned looks but immediately fell to their hands and feet. “I’ll make that two-hundred if this happens again.” Scribbling on a form, she returns to her centre position. “Based on the previous round, those who won have the privilege of wielding a weapon.” Erza’s eyes flickered dark. “Those who didn’t,” she let the form drop to her feet and crossed her arms, “will wield nothing.” Juvia felt her stomach fall as Erza sent her a glare. “Of course, I make sure everything is fair.” She raised her wrist to glance at her watch. “The pairings will be announced soon.”
Gajeel approached Juvia and extended his fist. “I’ll help you train, Juvia.” She cautiously glanced at his other hand that wielded a dagger.
“Are you sure, Gajeel? I don’t want to waste your time.” The truth was that Juvia was afraid. She didn’t know who to trust anymore. Last night’s encounter with Gray shocked her and she was even more confused than ever. His actions and words didn’t match at all, and Juvia wasn’t sure she could depend on anyone apart from herself.
Gajeel rolled his eyes. “I’ve been wasting my time enough these days after meeting you. This won’t take up too much time.” Juvia gave him a small smile. “Besides, once you’re trained you can save your own ass, right?” He taps at his eyebrow. “It’s a long-term strategy.”
Gajeel guides Juvia to a corner with fewer recruits and demonstrates a powerful punch. “Make sure you take the offence in a fight. Especially if you think you overpower them. A strong mentally can help you win.” Juvia nodded cautiously, mimicking Gajeel’s punches. “However,” he paused. “It can also be your downfall. Make sure you know when to punch and when to dodge.” Out of nowhere, Gajeel launches his fist at Juvia. She immediately ducks down and covers her head in shock. Her heartbeat crashed against her chest, as memories of being mauled almost to death seized her conscience. Her lungs pounded uncontrollably as she realised that she forgot to breathe. Gajeel immediately bends down to help her up. “You okay?”
Juvia forces herself to stand. “I have to be okay,” she muttered under her breath.
Before Gajeel could respond, the luminescent board flashed an array of vibrant colours. Words glitched as it began revealing the pairings. Juvia unknowingly bit down on her lip, her eyes rapidly scanning the list of foreign names. Finally, she found a familiar name. Her eyes focussed on Gajeel’s name, which was positioned right next to her’s. Unconsciously, her fingers began tracing her shoulder. Juvia lost count of how many times her heart sank that day, but she knew it was just the start of her problems.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
“I won’t go easy on you, Juvia.”
Juvia bit her lip but quickly relaxed her jaw when she felt a metallic taste enter in her mouth. She was bleeding before the match even began. Recruits piled around to watch as Erza raised an arm. “Fight.”
Before Juvia could even think about whether to be on the offence or defence, she felt the air knocked out of her as Gajeel’s figure lunged towards her violently. She instantly fell backwards and gasped when her head crashed against the hard surface.
“Sorry,” Gajeel mumbled before smashing the dagger handle against her cheek. “You know how difficult it was for me to get here,” he grimaced. Juvia felt her mouth open but no scream escaped her lips. She blinked in shock as a fist pummelled against her stomach. The same ringing pain entered her head. She felt her shoulder throb painfully and struggled to stand back up as Gajeel delivered a whack at her side. She felt her trust in him crumble everytime he apologised.”I’m sorry,” he would repeat again and again. His expression became foreign, and Juvia almost couldn’t recognise him. Suddenly, a flashing image of the disfigured man interrupted her vision. His disjointed teeth gnashed loudly together, spluttering blood everywhere. “You’ll pay. You’ll pay. You’ll pay”.  Juvia felt her body fuse into the ground. Her vision clouded but she refused to let the void take her. She helplessly let her gaze fall on Erza, who met Juvia’s desperate gaze with a dull stare. The winner was obvious by now, yet she remained nonchalant. As if on cue, Juvia felt Gajeel’s attack subsiding.
Erza raised an arm. “The winner is Gajeel.”
Gajeel immediately grabbed Juvia’s shoulder and pulled her up. “I’m so sorry, Juvia.” He swept away a strand of her loose hair, tucking it behind her ear. “You know how it is.” Juvia felt a shock hit her heart when she found his gaze softened. He was unfamiliar and Juvia felt even more lost than she already was. For the first time in her life, she missed the feeling of being alone in the tunnel.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Blood pooled into the drain with every scrub against Juvia’s body. She gritted her teeth and her body shuddered as she let the cold water wash over her. The stabbing pain at her shoulder never subsided and instead, it became even more painful. Whining quietly, Juvia sunk the ragged cloth across her bruised skin roughly, frantically trying to remove all evidence of her weakness. Her veins pulsated through her injuries, and her muscles burned every time she bent over to work at her sides. She glowered at her appearance through the metallic tiles. Her body limped at the wrong places as every part of her represented defeat. Her fingertips grazed her cheek as her eyes followed every purple mark that stuck to her body.
An unbearable burn radiated from her chest. She fell to her knees and recoiled until she was completely flooded by the pouring water. Juvia remained lifeless until she could no longer hear herself over the sound of the shower. Hesitantly, she allowed a tear to fall down her bloodied cheek. Her throat burned, desperate to suppress a sob that threatened to escape. She wasn’t going to stay weak anymore. Juvia was determined to find the same confidence she had in the tunnels. Grasping at her shoulder, she bit her bloodstained lip and let out a painful hiccup. She felt nauseous as her mouth opened up to release a cry. The painful memories she accumulated over the past few days started to overflow.
Toppling onto the frigid floor, she finally allowed herself to cry. An agonising pain spread through her chest as she let her tears flow down her face. She could no longer think properly, as she screamed into her bruised palms. Her tears fused together with blood as it snaked down the tiles before disappearing into a dark void. She promised that today was the last time she would cry tears of weakness.

Gruvia Fanfiction || Illegal Feelings (Prologue)
Happy new year !! here’s to 2021 :) i hope everyone’s safe with their friends and family <3 despite working on Exterminator, i have also decided to start another multi-chapter to keep my ideas flowing... so here’s a prologue for my new gruvia fanfic! thank u all for reading and pls remember to reblog or like if you enjoyed 🥰 i truly appreciate it
An ear-piercing scream erupted from Juvia’s lips as a bullet penetrated her. Her legs immediately collapsed beneath her, causing her body to fail completely.
The words of her captain were lost on blind ears as she struggled to breathe. Wheezing, her elbows crashed onto the coarse ground and with her last ounce of energy, she positioned herself behind a car. Smudges of red trailed behind her, as she stared in horror at the mess. The bullet had grazed her thigh, but it left a dark red abyss that entered her leg. Her eyes darted away immediately, too afraid to look. The world around her blurred with her obscured vision. Her voice hitched as she pushed through the pain, aware of the chaos that enclosed her. Struggling to comprehend the figure kneeling beside her, she gritted her teeth, her chest pounded at an accelerating speed as she desperately tried to breathe. Juvia was losing her conscious. Suddenly, her limp body was hoisted into the air by a strong grasp. Her eyes fluttered shut as she was casted into a frenzy of anxiety as all rationality escaped from her body.
~
Gray leaped across the road, barely dodging the bullet that raced past his cheek. Despite his bandaged arms, he lifted Juvia’s lifeless body and darted away out of sight. The noxious sound of rifles and bullets left Gray struggling to focus. He felt his muscles burn as he raced across the road, pumping his legs as hard as he could. Juvia’s body remained lifeless, too tired to move, yet Gray carried her swiftly, dodging other lifeless bodies. Her eyes peeled apart as her bright blue orbs took in the mess behind them. Her eyes wavered to Gray as she tiredly wrapped her arms around his neck. His jaw was tightly clenched together and a trail of warm blood oozed from his shoulder. Cuts and bruises scattered across his handsome face, marking his face like a world map. Her hand unconsciously raised to his cheek where a deeper cut caught her faltering attention.
“Juvia,” he panted. His eyes flickered to her for a brief second, sending her heart racing faster than it should. “I’ll get us home soon.” His lips etched into a small smirk as he swiftly slid behind a building and away from the mess Juvia had gotten herself into.
As the second lieutenant of the Fiore Police Force, she should not be letting their greatest enemy carry her off so easily like that – but when Gray came into the scene, Juvia decided that she would let it go just this one time.
“As the Captain of the Fiore Police Force, we are honoured to present you this honour.”
Juvia lowered her head to accept the glistening gold badge. Its shine reflected her blue eyes as she stared longingly into its captivating glow.
“Second Lieutenant Juvia Lockser, you are to commit yourself to the community, the force and every command issued.”
Juvia bowed her head lower and had to restrain her excitement as Captain Fernandes handed her the uniform. His eyes scanned her slowly, nodding in approvement as she trained her eyes upon the rest of the police force. He gave her a solemn smile, and with a pat on the back he issued her first duty.
“I know you won’t disappoint me.”
The day came to Juvia like a whir. Ever since she became a police officer, all she did was climb to higher ranks. She had to become someone she knew her mother would be proud of. Every morning, Officer Lockser was the first to arrive yet she was also the last to leave at the end of the day. She was always near the top five of finishing the training course, despite her fear of heights. The very same hands that gripped onto her new badge tightly were the same ones that trembled when she had to climb onto higher ground. It took five years for her to become who she was today. But she knew the price of this achievement and that the higher she stands, the harder she’ll fall.
However, when Gray Fullbuster came into the equation, he somehow managed to complicate her life more so than before.
It wasn’t simply an officer climbing the ranks – with her life at stake every day; it became impossible to control her wavering heart and dissipating breath when his irresistible smirk sent all of her senses out of the window. And that was when Juvia knew she was doomed for life.
“G-Gray–” Juvia shuddered from his hold as she squirmed beneath his body. His lips trailed across her neck, edging closer to her collarbone. When his intense eyes studied her carefully, Juvia reminded herself that their relationship was a mistake. But when she felt his fingertips linger at her legs and his breath tickle her ear, she instinctively wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer for more. She gasped when his hands skilfully explored her body, teasing her pale skin as they danced across her waist. When she clawed onto his back in pleasure, his dominion over her would increase. Their entwined bodies would mould into one another perfectly. It wasn’t a crime to make love to your husband, but when the Second Lieutenant of the Fiore Police Force was betrothed to the most wanted criminal, she knew a line had to be drawn.

It took me a while to complete chapter 2 but here you go!! It might be a bit slow in the start since I'm trying to set the scene :) but I’m going to pick up the pace in the next chapter (perhaps with a little lemon ;) ) please reblog/comment/like if you enjoyed! it really encourages me with my writing 🥺 (Please read chapter 1 here if you haven't done so already).
Chapter II - Gray
“How dare you speak.” Before Juvia could adjust her eyes to her clouded surroundings, a figure struck her with a violent force.
Juvia hurled forwards as it knocked her vigorously. Crashing face down, her cheek burned in pain as she rolled into the sinking mud. Before Juvia could lift her face away from the suffocating earth, a barbed boot hammered her back down into the ground.
“You filthy lowlife,” spat a guttural voice. He pinned her body against the sole of his foot and glowered over her figure smugly. “Should we leave it to rot, captain?” His heel dug into her back.
Juvia could barely muster a snarl as she sunk further into the ground. Barely seeing the faces of her captors, her vision blurred as dirt trickled down her face. Blood oozed from her head as she felt it dribble into her eyes, stinging them shut. She attempted to push herself up, but her arms immediately crumpled in defeat. The man simply plummeted his foot harder into her.
“Take her with us,” replied a smoky voice. With a knee against the floor, his breath was cold against her lifeless body. He calmly brushed a strand of blue hair away from her eyes.
“Juvia Lockser,” he growled. She cringed as her eyes landed on the alexandrite plaque that swivelled into sight. An icy finger tilted her face away from the ground as her eyes met his masked figure. Swiping his hand across her bruised cheek, he smeared blood across them in a swift motion. As he leaned down, she shivered in horror as his voice vibrated through her bones.
“I just saved your pathetic life.”
Through half-lidded eyes, she watched as everything she knew about her existence gradually dissipated into the darkness. The cries of the twins escaped into obscurity as it entrapped them in a place where she could never return to. The silence of the other prisoners served as a moment of solitude; their deadened eyes followed her unhurriedly. Although Juvia was the first prisoner to escape the blade of an exterminator, everyone knew that in the face of one, they would choose death in a heartbeat.
Juvia did not have that luxury to choose.
The jagged ground scoured Juvia’s knees as she was dragged against the cobble. Its cold, harsh surface abraded her lifeless body as she was hauled through the tunnel. Her vision blurred in and out as a mesmerising purple glow burned in the distance. However, when her orbs focused on its force, a harsh radiance burned them with a sharp pain. Its brilliance sunk deeper into her and she screamed as she felt her body evaporating into the blaze. Its ghostly flame enveloped around her, pulling her into its force and casting her skin alight in an excruciating kindle. Juvia screeched as her skin began to flare bright red, scorching her alive. The relentless fire threatened to tear her into shreds as it sunk further into her body. Juvia’s voice hitched in her throat as sparks pranced about, alternating with the deep mauve flame. Before she lost all consciousness, she watched in terror as her body glistened the same colour, when she completely disintegrated into the void.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Juvia’s eyes fluttered open. An iridescent glow flickered above her, hanging as a solitary source of light. She was in an empty room with a single bed that situated in the middle. Her eyes burned with pain as they hurriedly scanned around her surroundings. The brisk temperature left her regretful of sitting upright. She hastily sunk beneath the thin covers, hiding her bruised arms beneath her sole source of comfort.
“You’re up.”
Juvia twirled to the voice of a foreign woman. The heavy clatter of her steps brought her under the light, where her luminous red locks came into sight. It was the brightest colour Juvia ever laid eyes upon. Her armour cluttered against the cold iron floor as she approached.
Juvia’s lips opened but no words came out. Instead, her throat stung in response. Biting down on her lip, Juvia tried again, “I–”
“Commander Scarlet.”
Juvia stared in confusion.
“Suit up,” the woman commanded. Juvia found a pile of clothing tossed onto her lap. Her arms folded across her glistening chest plate. “We’ll be waiting outside.” And without another word, the woman disappeared.
Juvia scowled as she glanced down at her appearance. Her ragged gown was shredded, and its murky colour stained the mattress as she rose to stand. However, her legs suddenly lost all its strength, and sent her staggering to the floor. Juvia let out an inaudible gasp as her body once again met the harsh floor. She was struck by its force, where the phenomena of being burnt alive rushed through her body. It sent a convulsion that ran from her neck to her legs, reminding her of its capability. Her breath caught in her throat as she struggled to rise from the ground. As if her body had a mind of its own, she began to heat up. Her legs shuddered uncontrollably, and her heartrate increased as she felt her skin burn.
The endless abyss started to penetrate her consciousness, but before she could delve into an infinite darkness, a cold hand grabbed her wrist and hoisted her into a strong embrace.
Juvia’s eyes raised tirelessly to meet a pair of onyx ones. His orbs radiated a mysterious aura that left Juvia even more breathless. His gaze bore into hers and she felt his grip tighten around her as she contracted her body feverishly from the heat. His chest rose and fell in a slow rhythm, sending jolts down Juvia’s spine as their bodies pressed tightly against each other.
Juvia fell back into the bed as his arm slipped away from her slender shoulders. They sent shivers down her body as his lingering touch almost seemed to heal her. Juvia stared cautiously at his every movement, her eyes unwilling to leave his chiselled face. His eyebrows knitted together tightly.
“Are you able to get changed yourself?”
His voice sent a cool breeze by her ear, allowing Juvia to release a breath she didn’t realise she was holding. His low voice charmed her endlessly, but she realised how familiar it was. Drawing her eyes to his chest, she found the identical plaque that rested at his muscular pec. Swirls of silver swerved in an intricate pattern, flowering around an alexandrite that adorned its centre. Its mauve glow was dim, but just as it was about to send her back into an endless memory of purple flames, she felt her arms being raised. She hastily looked down to her gown, where she found his fingertips running along the hem of it, hiking it up towards her waist. His fingers tickled her bare hips and before Juvia could react, her gown was discarded.
“W-wait –” Juvia stuttered in panic. “What are you…” her voice drifted away as a deep blush coloured her cheeks when she realised that her only protection was a thin layer of cloth that wrapped around her breasts.
“What are you doing?” Juvia gasped, yanking the covers to her chin. Her voice was raspy but she found him with an eyebrow arched, challenging her. He gradually leaned in, allowing his untamed hair to fall above his hooded eyes as he surveyed her. “Since you’re clearly useless at everything, I’m making it faster for all of us.”
Without warning, he proceeded to change her, tearing away her covers and raising her arms once again. Juvia let out a high-pitched scream and sent her palm to his face.
The sound of a hard slap caused Juvia to flinch as the man glared at her. His lips twitched in annoyance and he lunged towards her. His arms bulged as he chained her wrists together above her head. The mattress sunk in as his weight hovered over her body. Narrowing his eyes, he studied her trembling body. Juvia squeezed her eyes shut, tucking her face away from his predatory stare. Struggling to move under his strong hold, Juvia remained as still as possible, letting him take in the sight of her weakening body. He allowed his mouth to inch closer and they opened slightly ajar against her ear. Juvia’s heart wavered as he whispered, “do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?”
Juvia remained silent as he studied her features. Her hair fanned out in a tangling mess, scattering across her bruised shoulders. Heaving a sigh, he pulled the shirt down over her head. She couldn’t seem to breathe as she felt his hands work swiftly over her body, tugging it snuggly over her hips. Moving his body over her, he descended and finally let her wrists go, allowing her to cover herself once again. Juvia felt the bed lift as he rose, his defined torso rising above her. She gulped, unsure if it was the heat that made her lose her mind or something else – but all she could do was blink, watching him comb a hand through his tousled hair.
“I-I can do the rest,” she finally managed to breathe out. The man cocked his head and contemplated her.
“Make it brief.” And with that, he swiftly left the room, leaving Juvia to stare down at the pair of leather pants which she carefully reached for. Gripping onto the bedpost for support, she tugged them on, allowing them to envelope her tightly. She grunted when she felt the fabric digging into her bruised legs. When her feet pulled into a pair of combat boots, she allowed her eyes to follow the path of a hallway, where a line of lights lit up a single path.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
A labyrinth of concrete snaked around the dim subterranean. Clutching onto her sore side, Juvia warily tiptoed to an open ground and glanced down the metal bars that encircled her, protecting her from a ten-metre fall.
Below, she watched in awe as hundreds of bodies moved about in the pit, each dressed in the identical gear as she did. The piercing shouts of an enclosed mass of people gave Juvia a headache, their words merging into a loud ring that penetrated her mind relentlessly. She gritted her teeth, allowing a hand to crash onto the handrailing before she could lose her balance once again. Her knuckles burned as her grip tightened around the metal bars, sending a shock through her body; but before she could lose herself to the darkness once again, a hand grasped onto her shoulder. Juvia gasped aloud, her heart pounded painfully until she turned face to face with Commander Scarlet.
“You made it,” she examined. Juvia nodded gingerly, attempting to hide her pain “Follow me.” Commander Scarlet gave her one last glance before marching down the stairs that clung to the walls by metal chains, cascading down into the pit. Juvia grappled to the hand railing and panted to catch up. Almost missing a step, she hurried behind, flabbergasted by her surroundings. Her eyes were drawn to the several other passages that scattered across the pit, each leading into an unknown dark alley.
As the two women descended further, Juvia could feel the tension rise as the once-boisterous shouts of the crowd began to dissipate. With all eyes on her, the scattered crowd began to formulate themselves into a series of ordered lines. Promptly dodging the masses of people, they each scurried to their places and with the perfect synchronism, they each raised a fist to their left shoulder.
“Commander,” they roared.
Commander Scarlet raised her hand. “Recruits.” She then proceeded to signal towards Juvia, whose face burned as they all turned their attention to her. Hundreds of curious eyes stared back at her lost ones.
“This is Juvia Lockser. She will be joining as a recruit.” A sound of hushed murmurs exploded, as the uniformed men and women all talked amongst themselves. Suddenly, a hand shot up into the air. It belonged to a man whose height towered above the others. Beads of metal travelled along his eyebrows and ears and they adorned a face that was twisted in an unpleasant scowl.
Commander Scarlet nodded in his direction. “Speak.”
“Commander,” he once again raised his a hand across to his shoulder. “I believe there were to be no more recruits,” his eyes flickered to Juvia’s when he spoke his last words, “with no exceptions.” This time, louder mutters followed from behind the line. However, Commander Scarlet crashed her armoured hand to her chest plate. The sudden force of the metals crashing together silenced everyone.
“There’s been an exception for Juvia Lockser.” As her name rolled off the Commander’s tongue, Juvia trembled as she felt her dark brown eyes land on her once again. “She will be joining as a recruit and that is all.” Her eyes darted back to the crowd. “No exceptions.” Everyone fell to complete silence.
“In fact,” she barked, “Redfox, you can be in charge of her for today.” With a flick of her wrist, the Commander turned to leave. “Dismissed.”
Juvia immediately shuddered as she found the man throwing her a murderous stare. Unable to move, she could only watch in horror as he towered over her, his arms snaking across his chest. “Gajeel Redfox,” he huffed. “I don’t know how you managed to become a recruit, but I welcome you regardless.” He extended a hand. Juvia blinked back at him in confusion.
“Do you not have any manners?” He clicked his tongue, reaching out to grab Juvia’s hand and giving it a hearty shake. “I’ll be showing you around.”
“J-Juvia Lockser,” she muttered. She found herself drawn to a tattooed number ’4’ on his collarbone. “What is that?” Juvia leaned in closer to take a better look.
“It’s our ranking.” He angled his head and nodded towards the rest of the recruits who were now dispersed and chatting amongst themselves. “Every recruit has one. It marks our placing for each round.” When he saw Juvia’s confused stare, he heaved an exasperated sigh. “You really know nothing.” Pointing at a wall, Juvia’s eyes followed his hands and they landed on a pixelated board that constantly changed between blue and purple, its fluorescent light blurring between each name that was listed by numbers.
“It’s always changing, but in the end, only five recruits will remain. You must be in the top five, or else you’re done for.” Gajeel pointed a thumb at himself. “Although I’m currently forth, the competitive rounds we all participate in become harder and harder to complete.” His voice lowered as he signalled for Juvia to come closer. “I heard that those who don’t make it are killed.” Juvia almost laughed aloud. To think that these people were afraid of death made her shudder.
Sitting in the pitch-dark cave for eighty-two days almost drove her mad – to the point where she wanted to grab a shard of rock and puncture herself until she bled to death. Her skin would then disintegrate into the mud, where it sunk beneath the ground, rotting, before joining the others. The urge to do so constantly tugged at her fingertips, where she desperately wanted to end it all. She felt regretful that an exterminator had not killed her. So, when she was given a second opportunity to live, she didn’t find it appealing at all.
Juvia gazed down at her dirtied hands. Truly, giving her a second chance at life was a form of punishment. However, the sudden recollection of that mysterious man caused her to flutter her eyes in shock.
“Do you know of a man who has a purple gem on his chest?” She pressed her thumb and forefinger together, attempting to mimic its position against her own chest. “This big?”
Gajeel immediately pulled her arm and through the deafening shouts of the other recruits, he lead her away. She failed to keep up, his grip tightening around her when they weaved through the crowds of people. Finally, he slipped into one of the tunnels that obscured them away from the eyes of those in the pit.
“Don’t ever talk about those with a plaque,” he whispered. Gajeel’s eyes flickered back and forth, aware of their surroundings. “They’re a full-time exterminator. Make sure you stay out of their way.”
“An exterminator?” Juvia’s curiosity simply increased. “Why can’t we talk about them?”
Gajeel pressed a finger to the bridge of his nose. “You don’t understand. They are assassins.” He shook his head, “no, they’re worse. They basically assassin assassins. The ultimate killing machine that the administration controls.” He paused, eyes widening as he gripped onto her shoulders. “Unless you’re one of them, they can easily take your life if they felt like it.” Gajeel let her go and released a bitter laugh. “And to think that we’re all trying to become one is hysterical.” His attention returned to Juvia. “Just don’t ever talk about them, okay? They all wear an alexandrite plaque just as you described. I haven’t seen one myself, but Levy–” Gajeel cleared his throat, “she is someone you can speak to.” He nudged Juvia slowly towards the pit and pointed at a petite, blue-haired girl. “There she is.”
Juvia studied his softened expression as the girl noticed their stare and gave them a small wave. However, before Juvia and Gajeel could make their way over, a burn ignited at her shoulder. Juvia yelped and collapsed, her weakened body immediately began to tremble at the recognisable sensation of being on fire. Gajeel scurried to her side, unknowing what to do. He desperately called out to her. “Juvia?!” However, before Juvia could respond, she felt a forceful grasp as a hand pulled her hair, yanking her away.
“Juvia Lockser,” the voice chuckled. An adenoidal voice entered her ears. She forcefully turned her face in response to the unpleasant man. “Welcome, new recruit.” A grin plastered across his face. “I wish we can get along well.” Juvia was dropped back down to the ground, her hair disarrayed as it pooled against the cold ground. However, she peeled her body away from the floor, exhausted and breathless. “Why? Do you need a hand?” The man extended an arm, earning a chuckle from two other men behind him. Juvia glared at him, and forcefully yanked at his hand, pulling him facedown into the floor. She watched in triumph as his face twisted into an infuriated glower.
“You bitch…” The man stretched both his arms out to capture her, before clobbering her body right back down into the floor. An incisive force scathed into her face. Unable to even scream for help, she felt the man jab a foot onto her back.
“Remember me?” Juvia cringed as she felt the same boot hammer into her side. “You disgusting drifter.” When Juvia turned to Gajeel for help, her face could barely make out his hopeless frown before she was plummeted back into the ground by a rough fist.
Suddenly, the purple flames of the tunnel returned to her vision. Its cataclysmic flames roared, flaring against the narrowing walls of the tunnel and Juvia once again found herself victim to its agonising burn. Her breath wavered as she realised everyone else simply watched. Their lifeless expressions mimicked those in the tunnel. They were all prisoners.
Juvia’s half-lidded eyes pleaded for help but she only witnessed Gajeel’s turning back. She felt her heart pound against her chest, racking against her head. But when her eyes flashed to her attacker’s chest, she found the answer. A gleaming alexandrite plaque glimmered, as if mocking her pain. Its vibrant purple almost burned her pupils.
Another punch landed; but the force was not against her - rather, the weight on her back lifted. She whirled to the sight of the man being hurled across the hallway.
“Captain!”
Juvia’s eyes widened in shock as she watched the captain smash a gloved knuckle against the man’s jaw. Seizing his collar, he delivered another blow, distorting his face with blood and purple bruises.
“Get up,” he growled. Juvia’s attacker stumbled, holding a hand to his bleeding nose.
“C-Captain,” he stammered. “I can explain –.” The captain interrupted by sending a final dig into his stomach until he collapsed unconscious. He approached Juvia and bent down on one knee, linking an arm under her thigh and the other around her back. With a heave, she was carried away.
Juvia gazed up at him in shock, her hands nervously rested on his chest. “Why did you help me?” Her heart pounded as he stopped to look at her. His onyx eyes captivated her once again.
“I don’t know,” he murmured. He lifted his chin and laid his eyes upon the overhanging stone in thought. Juvia watched his Adam’s apple flex as he breathed in and out. Unconsciously, she trailed a hand along his throat. Her fingertips shuddered in pleasure as they traced along his tanned neck. His eyes snapped back to her in bewilderment. Upon realisation, Juvia retracted her hand immediately. She gulped, unsure of his response as he continued to study her under his dark eyelashes.
“I guess you looked like you needed saving.” And with that, he proceeded to carry her along the twisting hallway. As Juvia felt her body bouncing against his cold one, she realised how intimate they were. His sturdy arms protruded against his tight t-shirt and his hard chest gave her butterflies as she occasionally bumped against his body.
Taking a final turn, Juvia laid her eyes upon a flight of stairs that lead to a spacious room. In the corner of the room, a single bed resided where it was surrounded by scattered paper and books. Juvia felt her weight fall into the mattress as he set her down. Crouching, he raised a hand to her cheek. Juvia felt her breath hitch against her throat.
“Who are you?”
His eyes narrowed before standing to his full height. He turned towards a chest where a pile of clothes littered across the floor. Juvia clenched her fists before trying again.
“Where am I and why did you bring me here?” Blinking away a single tear that threatened to fall down her cheek, she bit her lip nervously. Her hands trembled dangerously as she whispered under her breath, certain that he couldn’t hear her utter, “who am I?”
His eyes glazed over her as he brushed a hand through his hair.
“Gray.”
Juvia simply stared. His fingers curled around the hem of his shirt and it slipped off his head. “Gray Fullbuster,” he grunted again. However, her attention was already lost as she was exposed to the glory of his naked chest. The single source of light that emitted from a lantern casted a dynamic light against his toned body and when he bent down, her eyes trained on his every movement. The way his biceps flexed to retrieve a towel sent her into a whirlwind of emotions she wasn’t aware that existed inside of her. She took a deep gulp, “I-I’m Juvia.”
Gray spared only a second to glance back at her before dipping the towel into a water bowl.  When his muscular build approached her, Juvia could only gawk at him. He responded with a raised eyebrow. Bending down again, he captured her face in a hand and roughly wiped her cheek with the damp towel. Juvia flinched from the contact and pursued her lips. She almost forgot about the throbbing pain that rocked through her entire body. Instinctively, her fingers shielded her face defensively.
“Do it yourself then,” he growled. He threw the towel at her lap and Juvia barely caught it. Hastily wiping at her bloodied lip, she moaned softly as she felt her bruise sting. Gray surveyed her, his jaw clenching as she winced once again at the pain. Eventually, he retreated to another corner of the room.
“Why didn’t you fight back?” He picked up a minuscule bottle that contained a bronze liquid. His teeth caught onto the lid and with a jerk of his chin, it popped open. He paused before facing Juvia. “Why didn’t you ask for help?”
Juvia averted her gaze. “There’s no point,” she faltered. “Who would come help me, anyway?” At those words, Gray turned his back towards her. With a tap, the liquid spilled onto a cotton pad. Juvia’s hands curled into a tight fist as she clenched onto the bed sheet. “Why are you helping me?”
Gray once again leaned down towards her and Juvia closed her eyes as she felt the liquid dissipate onto her wounds, letting Gray dab carefully at it. The stinging sensation began to disappear as it seeped onto her cheek. When he didn’t respond, she slowly peeled her eyelids open again, but she immediately panicked when she realised that his face was closer, now inches away.
This time, it was his breath that caught in his throat. “I don’t know.”

Chapter IV - When she calls
“Where on earth did he take you?” Gajeel’s booming voice caused Juvia to pinch his arm, startled by the attention he drew towards them.
“Gajeel!” she hushed. Her eyes flickered around the hallway where a few other recruits passed by curiously. “Not here.”
“You do realise that the man who hurled you away like a sack of potatoes was the captain himself?” Gajeel held onto her shoulders, looking up and down in concern. “I hope you’re okay, Juvia.” His eyes suddenly averted from hers. “I need to apologise for my lack of action.” He bowed his head, ashamed. “I should have helped you… But it took me weeks to get to fourth place, I–” Juvia grabbed his hands and held them between hers.
“It’s okay, Gajeel,” she smiled sadly. “It was inevitable.” Gajeel shook his head.
“No, it wasn’t okay,” he gritted his teeth. “I should have done something. I was selfish.” Juvia sighed and on her tiptoes, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into an embrace. An action that surprised even herself. “It’s okay, Gajeel. I forgive you.” She was used to being abandoned. She never expected someone she only knew for one day to help her. At this thought, the image of Gray flashed through her mind.
Gajeel hesitated at first, before reciprocating the action. “It wasn’t okay, but thank you, Juvia.” He pulled away, holding out a fist. “We good?”
This time, Juvia curled her fingers into a fist and bumped it against Gajeel’s. “We’re good.”
“It’s time for me to introduce you to everyone.” He flashed her a smirk and beckoned her to follow. “Properly, this time.”
Juvia followed behind, recklessly meandering between the lively bodies of the other recruits. Gajeel’s pace quickened, dodging a few recruits who were bickering.
The pit seemed bigger than ever, as without any commanders around, the recruits all occupied themselves with eating, drinking or boisterous chatter. Juvia had never witnessed such energy in a single place. The way some downed gallons of liquor near a bar stool left her in shock. A brunette in particular, caught her eye. She was bent down, her mouth caught against a barrel that poured gallons of bright orange liquid. Before Juvia could stare any longer, she realised that she had lost herself in a maze of people. The pit mirrored the same darkness as the tunnel, but it was a completely different environment. People spoke loudly, their voices assimilating into one and another, blurring until their voices became one single unit that sent echoes down the subterranean network.
Swaying, Juvia’s eyes followed the dull walls of the pit. They went higher and higher, revealing a single opening where hundreds of other floors spiralled around them. Before Juvia’s eyes could find a familiar figure that leaned against the metal bar at the very top, she was jabbed at roughly.
“Sorry!”
A slender woman reached out a hand, bending down as Juvia stared back at her from the floor. She tucked a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear, offering her hand once again. “Please, let me help you up.”
Juvia hesitantly grabbed onto her hand, felling herself rise from the floor as the woman pulled her upright. “I’m really sorry for bumping into you, Juvia.” She quickly patted down Juvia’s leather pants and extended a hand. “I’m Lucy Heartfilia,” she beamed. “Is your name Juvia? Juvia Lockser?”
Juvia nodded shyly, sliding her hand in Lucy’s. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” she laughed. “It was my fault after all. Her eyes trailed behind her, searching in the crowd. “Did you lose Gajeel?” Before Juvia could reply, Lucy interrupted her. “Gajeel probably lost you! Here, I’ll help you find him.”
Juvia found herself behind tugged along by Lucy, who weaved through the crowds of people expertily.
“Lucy?”
“Hm?” The blonde flickered a glance back at Juvia before training her eyes back in front.
“What exactly are… exterminators?”
Juvia found herself bumping directly into the back of Lucy, who had come to a complete stop.
“I’ll take you somewhere else…”
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Juvia stood in front of a stone chamber. Its walls enclosed rows of beds, each with clothes or tools scattered across the floor. The emptiness of the room contrasted with the pit, as only the two of them stood inside the dim room.
“This is where the recruits stay.” Lucy pointed to a bed in the corner. “That one’s mine. I don’t think you have a bed yet, so stay with me for tonight.” As she made her way over, she turned to glance at Juvia. “I don’t know if Gajeel’s told you this, but it’s unisex.”
Juvia cocked her head in confusion. “Unisex?”
“Yeah, unfortunately.” Lucy pulled off her shirt in a swift movement. “So, it’ll take some time to get used to.” Juvia immediately lowered her gaze, finding interest in the iron floor.
“Oh,” was her only response.
“We’ve all been together since the start, so we’re pretty close.” Lucy grabbed an identical shirt and tugged it above her head. “Wait till you see the showers,” she chuckled.
“How long have you all been recruits?” Juvia queried.
Lucy rested her chin on her knuckles, squinting her eyes in thought. “I honestly don’t know. Time doesn’t exist anymore in our lives since we became recruits.”
“What exactly are we?” Juvia bit her lip. “Recruits, I mean.”
Lucy raised an eyebrow, casting a confused glance at Juvia. “You mean you don’t know how you got here?” Lucy fell backwards onto the mattress, her back sliding down against the wall. “Sit,” she beckoned, patting the spot beside her.
Juvia gingerly sat, her body flinching at how hard the mattress was. “I don’t know why I was brought here by Gr –” she cleared her throat, “by the captain. All I remember is being taken away from a tunnel.”
Lucy’s eyes widened; her brown pupils immediately tracing back to the entrance. “You should be glad that no one’s here.” She shifted her position, leaning in closer. “Listen carefully, Juvia. I don’t know how and why you became a recruit, but we’re all controlled and watched by the administration. They run this world. If I’m guessing correctly, you must be a drifter.” Lucy hopped off the bed and slid out a chest from beneath the bed. Grabbing at her collar, she pulled out a locket and hastily pushed it into the keyhole.
“You’re one of the few people I show this to, Juvia.” Lucy gazed back at the entrance one last time before turning it. A click escaped from the chest and she jerked it open. Within, layers of blankets concealed away a tattered book. Pulling it swiftly out, Lucy rapidly flipped through the pages until she pressed a finger to a page. Her eyes flickered across, mumbling before showing Juvia.
“Look,” her finger landed on a picture where a familiar plaque was roughly sketched out. “Do you recognise this?”
“An alexandrite plaque,” Juvia breathed out. She traced a finger over it, remembering its glow that blinded her in the tunnel the first time she ever saw one. “I heard from Gajeel that only exterminators wear these.”
Lucy nodded, “that’s right. And an exterminator is someone all recruits are trying to become,” she whispered. “And by all, I mean all, Juvia.” She stared right into her eyes. “Some recruits are willing to kill to become one.” Juvia felt herself unconsciously swallow.
Lucy suddenly let out a chuckle, rolling her eyes. “Ironically, exterminators are the administration’s ultimate weapon.” She paused, turning away her gaze. “And I’m also trying to become one,” she muttered softly.
“What’s so great about being an exterminator?”
“Power,” Lucy simply replied. “As an exterminator, you get favoured by the administration. You’re basically set for life. You get rewarded for doing the administration’s dirty work.” Lucy flipped to the next page, its condition browner than the previous.
“Here,” Lucy edged closer to Juvia who peered on cautiously. She read aloud, “Exterminators are the administration’s weapon, designed to kill.”
At the edge of the page, a miniscule illustration of a dagger caught Juvia’s eye. It equipped a trail of patterns that swirled around its handle, emitting a purple sparkle. Before she could look closer, Lucy slammed the book shut.
“And this will be the first and last time I’ll be showing you this book,” she smiled.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Naked bodies of people in the shower were something Juvia never thought she’d ever see. Grasping onto her change of clothes tightly, she was unable to move. Wherever she looked, naked bodies moved in and out of the vicinity. Shower heads were littered across the walls, but that was the only facility Juvia could see. No doors or walls covered anything that needed covering. Shielding her eyes in terror, she shrieked in surprise when a man marched past her, his wet skin grazing hers.
“Watch it,” he barked. Juvia immediately twirled on her feet and turned to leave. She ducked beneath her clothes, holding it against her face as she raced back to the bed chamber. Scurrying over to Lucy’s corner, she collapsed onto the floor, exhausted. Her clothes reeked of sweat, but she was too afraid to change. Back in the tunnel, she didn’t have the same concerns that troubled her now. Getting changed or eating properly with other people were not on her immediate list of things to do. Two men that occupied beds directly opposite of Lucy’s were eyeing her down, their gazes never leaving Juvia’s as they got changed. The one closest bent over, his muscular arms raising over his head to pull off a shirt. Juvia hesitantly occupied herself with her clothes, intertwining her fingers nervously together she prayed that they would finally look away. But instead, she only found their booted feet standing directly in front of her.
“Oi, drifter,” one hollered. He cracked his knuckles, baring a hideous smile as he approached her. “You’re the newbie, aren’t you?”
“Sorry, but we don’t have a lot of entertainment around here, so you’ll have to do,” snarled the other. Right as he finished his sentence, he swiped a hand down, attempting to grab at her arm but she promptly moved herself away. Juvia hastily stood to leave, but only found herself captured between the hands of the recruit.
“Where do you think you’re going, sweetheart?” he chirped, earning a snort from the other man. “Come here,” he hummed, pouncing for her other arm. Juvia screamed as she felt the man snake his arms around her rib, heaving her into the air.
“Hey, chuck her over here,” the other howled. “Let me greet the newbie, too.”
Juvia shrieked as she felt herself being thrown effortlessly into the air until she landed against the harsh grip of the other man. Before he could take a hold of her, she bared her teeth and sunk it deep into his hand. When she heard him screech in pain, she pushed at his chest violently and fell to the safety of the ground.
“Grab her!”
The other man leaped across; his arms ready to seize her. Juvia carelessly moved her body away, only to slam right into a bed. Crawling away desperately, her heart throbbed as she felt her palms skid across the hard, metal floor. However, before she could leave, she felt a compulsion against her stomach and she was sent flying across the floor, crashing into the body of another recruit.
“What the fuck?”
Juvia winced as she clenched to her side. The pain arose once again, igniting her skin like a flame.
“Stay away from her!”
Gajeel’s roaring voice echoed through the chamber. Her eyes slowly peeled open to see Gajeel’s broad back shied her.
“Bora,” he snarled. “I hope you understand what this means.” Gajeel yanked down his shirt and directed a finger at his chest. As if on cue, the number ‘4’ glowed a purple shade. Bora cocked an eyebrow and raked a hand through his navy hair. “Gajeel,” he sighed. “Why on earth are you helping a drifter?” He raised his chin arrogantly. “Unless you’re one yourself.” Gajeel gnashed his teeth, pounding a fist against his other hand. “You fucker, I dare you to say that again.”
Before Bora could storm towards Gajeel, the entire chamber was silenced by a thundering voice. Commander Erza marched into view; her armour equipped from head to toe. Its roughness crashed against the metal floor as she paced until she was situated at the centre of the entrance.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps trailed into the chamber, where other recruits all ran inside. Even those that were dripping wet from head to toe hurried over from the showers, quickly tossing on clothes.
“The trenches” she hollered. Her eyes landed on Juvia. “Now.”
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
The recruits all piled into a spacious room where equipment of all sorts was littered across the floor. In each corner, a different set of obstacles resided. As the recruits moved into the room, they instinctively moved into rows, facing Commander Scarlet who stood with her hands at her hips. Juvia hurried behind Gajeel, who cocked his head, beckoning for her to follow.
“Recruits,” the commander bellowed. “There’s been a change of plans, so tonight, we will be training earlier than usual.” Beside her, an array of weapons scattered upon a table. She advanced over to an axe and welded it between her fingers. “You will be paired up.” She bounced the handle of the axe calmly against her other hand. “There are no rules.” She then turned on her heels, waving a hand towards a wide scoreboard that suddenly materialised upon mention. “If you do manage to make it to the next round, this will tell you what weapon you shall wield.” Commander Scarlet snapped her fingers together and instantly, the list of rankings poured onto the board. Juvia spotted Gajeel’s name instantly; number 4. Her eyes glanced over the list, barely recognising any of the names until she found her own. Dead last, at number ‘62’, her heart palpitated nervously.
Commander Scarlet’s voice bounced against the walls, interrupting her thoughts.
“This counts towards your ranking.” A sinister smirk plastered across her face. “So, fight to the death.”
A neon glow flashed across the screen, its lights materialising into words and numbers. Beside Juvia’s name, the words ‘Bora’ clearly spelled out. She winced, feeling the same menacing stare bore into her back.
“Juvia?” She whirled to face Gajeel. “Will you be okay?” Worry flashed over his eyes as he narrowed his eyes, the metal piercings creasing with them. “Do you know how to fight?”
Before Juvia could reply, she felt herself lurching forwards. Laughter erupted as she snapped her face to find Bora roaring with laughter. “I’ll see you soon, newbie.” Sending her a wink, he turned to leave. Juvia gritted her teeth, rubbing at her calloused palms. Gajeel pulled her up. “You’ve been falling a lot today,” he chuckled. Giving her a small smile, he gave her a pat on the shoulder. “Ignore him, Juvia.” He sent a glare at the other recruits that looked on curiously. “He’s all talk. Make sure you act fast when you’re fighting him. He’s big but slow.”
Juvia nodded with confidence, but when Gajeel jogged off, she felt her face sweat, her hands tremble and her heart pound. She wasn’t ready at all. But she didn’t have time to contemplate her options, as her name flashed across the board, with Bora’s following close behind.
At the centre of the room a boundary marked a radius around a line that radiated a dim purple glow. The other recruits situated themselves around the circle, some chanting Bora’s name.  Juvia gulped as she cautiously made her way onto the surface. She cringed when she entered, a sudden wind flushed past her, and within seconds she found herself facing Bora in an enclosed arena. A mauve mist hovered around them, obscuring their view of everything but each other. Commander Scarlet’s voice exploded, “Now fight!”
Within seconds Juvia was sent flying, her arms flailed in the air as she was slung by a fist. A clash echoed behind her and she collided against the surface. A sharp pain penetrated her spine, spiralling down to her legs until she could no longer feel them.
“I can easily destroy you.” Juvia leaned against her elbows and shuffled backwards, away from the man who approached her with a single stride. He bent down and with a tug of his wrist, he yanked her chin with his thumb. “You’re nothing but a drifter,” he snickered. “So, don’t get arrogant with me.” Juvia cringed as she felt his eyes lazily drift from her face to her body. She felt his thumb trail along her jaw, lingering, as his eyes continued to venture lower down. As he extended a tongue along his bottom lip, he began to inch closer. Juvia threw back her arm, mauling her fist against his nose.
“Stay away from me,” she growled. Another fist landed on his surprised face and Juvia scurried to her feet as she watched blood trickle from his nostrils.
“How dare you…” he bellowed. Wiping at his face with his sleeve, blood smeared across his menacing face. “Come here, you little –,” he screamed, darting towards Juvia with greater force. He grasped Juvia with both hands, and as she struggled in his hold, he drove an elbow directly onto her face. Grinding his bone against her face, Juvia cried out in pain. She hammered her heel onto his foot and stumbled backwards. Bora simply recaptured her and wrapped an arm around her neck, tightening his hold. Juvia felt her body rise, her blood rushed to her head and all she could feel was the compression against her neck. She was suffocating. Kicking at her feet, she barely inflicted any damage as her feet simply bounced against his legs.
“You’re going to regret punching me, you wrench,” he snarled. With his other hand, he navigated around his pocket, pulling out a pocketknife. Juvia’s arms numbed as she desperately clawed at his arms. Her eyes blurred as she realised that she was losing air. Her lungs contracted rapidly, causing her to gasp with pain.
Bora angled the knife at his teeth and teared away the sheathe.
“If you don’t want to die,” he hissed, “beg me.” He held the blade at her neck. Juvia’s chest heaved as she watched the gleam of the knife threaten her at the corner of her eye.
“Beg me,” he taunted. “Beg me to be my plaything.” Juvia was beginning to feel light-headed as she felt her body being lifted higher and tighter against his hold. Her chest throbbed as her pulse accelerated faster. But nothing left her more disgusted by his touch; the way his odious breath wafted at her neck nauseated her. Gaining her last ounce of energy, she once again crushed her teeth into his flesh, plummeting it until he finally released her. But before she could run away, she let out an ear-piercing shriek as she felt a sharpness enter her shoulder. The precipitous pain sent her tumbling to the ground. Her hands scrambled to her shoulder, finally finding the handle of a knife sticking out from her flesh. The sting infiltrated, sending a gush of blood streaming from the back of her shoulder. She wailed as her body burned. The sharpness seeped into her muscles. She felt faint, but her body forced her to stand. She choked on her own spit as she gagged, running as fast as her body could hold her. Juvia let out a shriek as she felt her body tearing back down to the ground.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Bora’s bitten arms oozed blood, but they managed to snake around her legs and pull her towards him.
“Stop!” Juvia let out another scream as she watched the knife sink further into her. Bora’s hands wrapped around the handle, and with a swift motion Juvia felt her arm disintegrate away from her body. It teared away slowly, but Juvia could not bear to watch as she felt blood splatter at her cheeks. She threw a kick at Bora who rolled backwards.
“Help,” Juvia whispered. Her voice was caught in her throat. Her right hand trembled against the harsh floor, trying to pull away her body from Bora for dear life. She bit back a sob and finally let out another scream, “someone, please help me.”
Swiftly, Juvia felt her body levitate as she was cradled against a strong chest. The familiar sight of a glimmering plaque came into view as it bounced against her arm.
“So you do know how to ask for help.” A husky voice vibrated against her cheeks. Juvia craned her neck, and through half-lidded eyes, she watched as Gray gazed back at her. His dishevelled hair obscured his narrowed eyebrows, hiding his creased features. Juvia slowly raised a hand to sweep it behind his ear.
“Gray,” she croaked. She almost immediately missed his eyes as he turned his attention away from her. Holding her against him, he made his way out of the haze. As he stepped past the boundary line, the mist parted and revealed the shocked faces of the other recruits.
“Captain Fullbuster.” Gray simply carried on walking. “Captain,” Commander Scarlet tried again. “You’re interrupting training.”
“I told you to train her,” Gray snapped back. His gaze drifted back to Juvia’s. Her blue eyes reflected his onyx ones, fluttering in surprise. “Not get her killed.” His deep voice sent chills down Juvia’s spine, and she almost forgot about the knife in her shoulder.

Chapter VII - A drifter’s realisation
That night was the first time Juvia noticed the shadowy marks that scattered across his body. When Gray raised his biceps to discard his shirt, Juvia laid her eyes upon a mauve stripe that roiled around his ribs, descending down and swirling into a labyrinthine pattern. It branched across his hip bones and danced across his chest, steadily rising along with each breath he took. Dark bruises marked his toned body, where scars implanted into his skin for the rest of his life. His perfectly sculptured body sent Juvia’s heart pounding irrationally, but its worn state sent her in shock. Two paralleling strikes across his back caught her eye; with each of its ends blistering and blending into his tanned skin, injuries marked him all over. A raw wound leaked at his collarbone.
           “You’re bleeding,” she spluttered.
Gray’s eyebrows knitted together and once again shut her up by force. His lips swallowed her violently, capturing her shaking body in between his. She squirmed in his hold, desperately pressing her hands against his chest to stop him – but to no avail. Juvia gasped into his lips as she felt a hand roughly grasping at her thighs. His other hand intertwined through her messy locks as he pushed her against the wall. He was suddenly desperate to gain control over his victim, yet something inside him felt damaged.
The burning current in his body was dying down, but a new sensation that inundated at his chest couldn’t calm him down. This newfound feeling of caressing someone else’s body with such zeal shocked his heart. It began to clobber against his chest. Suddenly, Gray anticipated the same venomous acid to rise up through his throat; but nothing came. All he could feel was something blooming at the pit of his gut, and as his curiosity beckoned him to explore this foreign instinct, he found himself prowling past her delicate skin. Tangling his fingers between her blue hair, his lips embraced hers hungrily. But just as he could feel his body burning with pleasure, he felt his heart ache when he saw tears run down her cheeks. For the first time, Gray had lost to his victim. Rather than a thirst for blood, he found himself willing to bend his rules for her. The way those tears drained down from her sapphire eyes to her neck left him bruised. The injury at his collar was completely forgotten as all he could see was the pain he had inflicted.
“You should leave,” he urged ruggedly. Pushing a hand through his dishevelled hair, he pointed towards the door.
Juvia found herself being discarded once again by the exterminator. Yet this time, his bitter eyes were sombre and his lips quivered. Gray was desperate this time, and that made all the difference. His physical condition only encouraged Juvia to stay, and she made sure he knew.
“I’m not leaving tonight,” she announced. Her fists were tightly squeezed together, and she let her eyes be the ones that found him.
Approaching from the darkness Gray was imprisoned for life, he suddenly found her sparkling in a place that was unknown to him. The way her skin gleamed bright in the dull room aroused him to stagger nervously towards her. The way she radiated a sense of devotion and fervour interested him; this unfamiliar feeling of holding onto her for dear life. But when her slender hands were once again within reach, he was paralysed. A fear rekindled in his heart, and he was starting to struggle to pump oxygen through his lungs. A purple haze obscured his view of her illumination. She was once again out of reach. Falling backwards, Gray felt his body collide against the wall.
“I’m tired,” he exhaled. “You can clean up first.”
Juvia was speechless. His once-taut figure limped and his breath became rugged. All Juvia could muster in response was a small nod as she retreated.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Juvia drew in a sharp breath as the frigid water trickled onto her pale body. The bleakness of the water sent a chill running down her back and she desperately ignored each stinging drop that fell onto her skin. Allowing each trail of water to seep into her, she rubbed ferociously at her arms. The blemished remains of the knife wound at her shoulder was still prominent; a lurid scar pierced through her skin. However, a fragrant caught her attention. Bending down to a small bottle that sat alone in the corner of the facility, Juvia carefully raised it to give it a sniff. The pungent scent exuded a comforting smell; combined with the burnt smell of wood and citrus, something else wafted into her senses. Curious, she poured the bottle onto her hand and watched the periwinkle liquid dribble into her palm. Her finger slathered across and she peered at the bubbles that began to form. Massaging the foam across her arms, she beamed in delight as she allowed herself to be covered by this new scent.
At the corner of her eye, she could see the shadowy figure of Gray who stood by the light. His chiselled body was illusory through the thin piece of cloth that was drawn in between them. Despite the freezing water, Juvia could feel herself heat up. Her nakedness dawned on her as she realised that the unisex shower awaited her back in the chambers. She would not have the comfort of the same privacy. Afraid to be spoilt by this privilege she could possibly never experience again, she hastily stepped away from the shower. The icy water receded.
Opposite her, a full-size mirror reflected her bare body. She couldn’t recognise herself. Her hands nervously scrambled across her face, finding it difficult to believe that it was her. Shades of purple scattered across her legs and abdomen, marking her like a world map. Her dishevelled hair embraced a pair of swollen cheeks, emphasising her blood-shot eyes. Each lock became cobalt blue as her hair darkened from the moisture. Her body was thinner than ever; and she could see how her wounds exacerbated her sickly appearance. Her features were so foreign to her and all of a sudden, Juvia became self-conscious. Her lips were red and bloated; teeth marks etched across them reminded her of a certain someone. As if on cue, she saw Gray. Without realising that the curtain had been drawn back moments ago, she twirled in surprise. Her arms immediately guarded her exposed chest. “How long have you been standing there!?”
           “Longer than you’d like.”
Juvia yanked the dangling cloth down, carelessly wrapping it around herself. “What are you doing?” Juvia babbled, unable to form another proper sentence as she could only gawk back at the man.
“I was going to tell you that the shower only lasts for a few minutes.” Gray held out a towel. “I came to give you this.”
She hesitantly reached out a hand, but immediately reddened as she realised that the cloth loosened. Almost instantaneously, his eyes flickered down. Dark orbs followed droplets that streamed down her naked legs.            “Stop looking!” Juvia screamed. Her voice caused him to smirk in amusement. Threading a hand through her hair, he weaved the towel into her locks. Juvia took a gulp as his lips inched closer to her face. His other hand wrapped around her naked back and Juvia let out a breath she didn’t realise she was holding.
           “What if I refuse?”
Gray inhaled and she shuddered in response, shivering from both the cold and the way his breath tickled her neck. His murmur broke the silence.
           “What is this smell?”
“Sorry, I didn’t know if I was allowed to use it.” Juvia peered at him, studying his features carefully. “Was I not supposed to use it?”
Gray’s brows crossed together. “It’s fine.” He suddenly broke away.
“Gray, I’m sorry,” Juvia cried out. “I keep saying the wrong things.” She felt her throat burn as another tear threatened to fall. Gray turned his back to her.
“I told you, it’s fine. It doesn’t belong to me anyway.”
Juvia quickly wrapped the towel around her body firmly before approaching him once again.
“Who does it belong to?” she whispered. Juvia tried to look at him properly, but his eyes remained cold and distant. She tried again, “it smells nice.”
The lantern light flickered like a violent tango, its flames nearly dying out but each spark simply ignited itself once again. His raven-black hair was disarrayed as he turned to her.
“It belonged to the first person I killed.” He left out a dry chuckle. “And I don’t even remember who it was.”
Juvia grabbed at his arms and to her surprise, Gray flinched. She quickly pushed away the depressing thought and furrowed her brows.
“Why do you kill?” Unexpectedly, her voice wavered and she could feel her oesophagus contracting together. “How come you’re an exterminator and why are the other recruits trying to become one?”
Gray averted his gaze but answered her with a solemn sigh. “The administration.”
“The administration?” Juvia was resolute that she wanted more answers. “Who are the administration? What do they do and what do they want?”
Gray pinched the bridge of his nose, heaving an exhausted breath. “You should get changed.” As he spoke, he held up her clothes. “It gets colder in the mornings.”
“The mornings?” Juvia’s attention teetered. “What are mornings like?”
To this, Gray was the one who was surprised. “You don’t know mornings are?” Juvia cowered from his confused glance, afraid that she’s said something wrong again.
“I-I have never left that tunnel. I woke up in that tunnel and I thought my life was going to end in that place as well.” Strangely enough, she couldn’t muster any tears. When the eeriness of the tunnel reminded her of how she was suffocated by its very emptiness, her heart felt just as depleted.
Suddenly, she felt a pair of frigid hands clasp between hers. Warily, her eyes trained to Gray’s face.
“You should go,” he smiled weakly.
Juvia jerked away from his hold. How come Gray was always the one who told her what to do? Why was he the one who controlled how she lived her life? Who did he think he was; taking her wherever he wanted, telling her that he wanted her? Her stomach sizzled with a scorching pain.
“No, Gray,” she seethed. “You can’t tell me what to do.” Her sudden outburst caused Gray to clench his jaw. “You’re supposed to kill people, so why aren’t you killing me when I disobey you?” Juvia snatched the clothes from his hands. Recklessly letting the towel fall to her feet, she suddenly lost all rationality. “You take me whenever you want to,” she rambled. Juvia shoved the leather pants on, allowing the material to slip past her pale legs. Gray could only watch in silence. “You say that you want me, but then you discard me whenever you want.” Juvia realised that she was letting her mouth run wild, and yet she had no desire to stop. She slipped the shirt through her head and pulled it down over her breasts. “Why does everyone assume that I know just as much as you all do?” She stumbled into her leather boots and as she threw him a final glare, she turned to leave. “Thank you for saving me so many times, but I don’t think I’d like to cross paths with you ever again.” The moment she said those words, she knew she regretted them. It wasn’t her intention to yell at him, but she was too lost and confused to understand what she wanted. It was that frenzy she felt whenever she saw him that made her even more perplexed. When he would seize her body within his much stronger one, she could feel herself melt within his hold. The way he would hurriedly interlock their lips together left her wanting more. She wanted him to taste her all over; and let him take full control as they melded into one another as morning came. She wanted to see what morning was and experience everything she never did with him. Every tear she shed was for him and when her vision would darken, the first person she would think of was Gray coming to save her. The distance he would draw between them only enticed her to embrace him. His stoicism urged her to pull down those walls he unconsciously built up. That was when she realised she wanted him, but it was all too late as she let the door close behind her.

Chapter III - Forsaken minds
“Gray Fullbuster.”
The name was spat out like a curse – and it was intended to be one the moment he became an exterminator.
Commander Fernandes scanned the young man’s scarred chest that gleamed with sweat.
“Being an exterminator will destroy you.”
Gray’s eyes simply bored into the wall, unwavering. “I know, Jellal” he muttered. “So let it.” Commander Fernandes slipped a tongue across his lips before unsheathing a dagger. He bit down on his bottom lip cautiously, eyeing Gray before revealing a dagger. Its razor-sharp edge reflected Gray’s trembling throat as he swallowed.
“It’s going to hurt.”
Gray’s eyes urgently clasped together as he felt the tip rest above his collarbone. With a flick of his wrist, Jellal drove the dagger into his skin, and in a single motion it left a deep cut that flushed wide open. Blood meandered down his bare chest, leaving a trail of red behind. Its sting left Gray’s shoulder throbbing, as he felt the pain linger through his arms.
Jellal’s fingers recoiled around the handle tightly before angling the edge the opposite direction. Gray gritted his teeth as he felt the dagger grind against his skin before it penetrated his flesh and inched closer to his bone.
“All done,” Jellal announced. He quickly pulled away and with a brisk swing, the blade disappeared behind a thin piece of cloth.
“Congratulations on ending your life,” he laughed bitterly. “It’s your first day as an exterminator.” With a twist, the blood soaked into the cloth. “Try and stay alive.” Jellal turned to leave, but only after giving Gray his last piece of advice. “Sometimes memories are the worst form of torture.” And he withdrew into the darkness.
The bubbling flow of blood continued to spill over his chest as Gray peered down at his collarbone. Blending in with pools of blood, the number ‘1’ was left behind to scar him for life.
As the son of Silver Fullbuster, Gray was constantly reminded of his privilege, his honour and his power. Yet Gray never found any of those things in his life. Only the lingering feeling of being tortured by an emptiness scoured his heart. Every morning a miasma of purple haze was pumped through his throat which he would inhale into his oesophagus. Choking him from the inside, the mist crammed against his chest, dissipating into his lungs. He felt his body stagger as the mauve flame began to ignite from within, thriving against his constrained muscles that desperately denied its entrance. A lash paralysed his body completely, its serrated hooks clung onto his back and all Gray could remember was screaming before it assimilated into his skin. It tore at his raw flesh, marking him with a violet ink that contaminated his bloodstream. As it bloomed across his body, it spiralled, forming intricate patterns that forever scarred him. As it faltered across his hips, it detached and ripped, ascending towards his chest where the number labelled him permanently. The conflagration ravaged freely within his body.
When he equipped his gloves, he found his veins glowing purple; and when he gazed into the mirror, his onyx eyes emitted a purple glare that engulfed his pupils completely. It excavated his eyelids and stretched his orbs irrationally. As he found his reflection in the mirror, his eyes blinked drips of blood that oozed a mauve glaze. Dripping into the sink, they churned before trickling down into the drain.
Every day, he found more and more purple around his body. The colour left him sick. Although the agony in his heart was relieved; he found himself devoid of any emotion.
Every night, the agitated flames ate at him; its flares burning the sides of his stomach before swelling against his ribcage. It roared against his lungs, depriving him of oxygen before relinquishing its power, until it finally gushed out of his lips. Gray’s throat smouldered as he let the noxious ash seep out of his mouth. The acid scorched his lips until they split open, exposing purple blood that combined and pooled at his feet, gurgling as it dissolved into cinder.
When Silver Fullbuster witnessed his son bent over the bleak floor with a hand strangling at his own throat, his arms simply folded across his chest.
“This change is simply a small price to pay, Gray.” He disregarded the fragile and tormented condition of his own son. “Gray Fullbuster,” he hollered. “I expect great things of you.” His sharp gaze narrowed as they slanted to inspect his crouched body.
Gray gurgled another pool of mauve liquid.
“The administration will not tolerate any weakness,” he hissed. “So, get up,” he seized Gray’s shoulders between his grasp, “and look at me, you weakling.” Gray’s eyes remained closed, his body weak and jostling along with his father’s grip. When no response was received, Silver released his grasp and watched Gray deflate, his face splattering against the hard floor.
“If you don’t get up,” he urged, “you will die.” Hurling Gray’s shoulder up with a foot, Silver jerked at his dishevelled hair. “Gray Fullbuster,” he screamed. Before he could raise a hand against his son’s lifeless body, he found a suffocating grasp against his wrist. Gray’s eyes slowly raised to meet his father’s.
“Shut the fuck up,” he growled. Silver immediately dropped his hands in shock. “Don’t touch me, you piece of shit,” he barked. Gray’s knuckles burned red as they smashed against his father’s outstretched arms. “Mark my words, old man.” He bashed a fist against his chest. “I’m going to kill you first.”
And that was when Gray experienced the greatest regret in his life.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
After countless days of indiscernible pain, Gray awoke in the middle of the night to his heart bursting. His eyes shivered open as he clawed a fist against his chest, shrieking as his heart accelerated uncontrollably. It clobbered against his hand and he sputtered, choking on air. He felt blood pumping faster to his heart, until he was certain that it was also stained purple. Sentimentality and morality were now completely lost.
It was the same morning when Gray found himself drenched in blood that didn’t belong to him. The fluid dripped from finger to finger and as his eyes trailed its path, he found it merging against several other lifeless bodies that tattered across the metal floor. Their dismembered joints lay upon one and another, until he found himself in a room covered entirely by lifeless bodies. Yet when he took a deep inhale of the metallic scent, he found it alluring. His lips curled into a sinister smirk as he flickered a tongue against his thumb. As members of the administration observed from behind glassed walls, they knew at that very moment that Gray Fullbuster would become one of their best killing machines.
Gray’s extermination skills accelerated faster than all those who trained with him; yet he was the youngest to succeed. And it all began when he was given his first order.
“Kill Silver Fullbuster.”
And so Gray did exactly as he was told to do.
Engineered to be violent and ruthless, he found himself lost in the scent of the blood of his victims. Their faces slowly merged together, combining into one colossal pool of red. Gradually, their identities became indiscernible. Gray could barely recognise the face of his father as he fell to the floor, unconscious against the strike of his blade. That was the night when he lost all the love that he had left in his heart. Like a river, Gray let his victim’s blood run through his hands, watching it seep into the earth. He found pleasure in the sound of screaming; and the ultimate feeling of relief overwhelmed him when he put a stop to the heart of his victim. The days became months and Gray simply did what he did best – what he was born to do; kill.
But when those sapphire eyes gaped back at his, a trigger pulled in his brain. It sent a shock that protruded against his chest. Suddenly, he found himself inhaling a gush of water. It seeped into his nostrils and circulated through his throat before drenching through his body. The freezing cold sensation put out the ravaging flame that ate at him every day. Like a river, it washed away the cascading thirst to kill.
The way her voluptuous body clung onto his sent him panting. When her delicate hands skimmed across his rough ones, they sent a tingling sensation that left Gray gasping for air. When her slender fingers nonchalantly trailed down his throat, he wanted to bring her closer; and when her hair spread across his mattress, he wanted to extend his lips across hers and smash them together until they both ached for oxygen. His tongue would then infiltrate her slightly ajar mouth and venture, locking tightly together with hers, dancing against each other.
The foreign feeling of keeping this new victim alive thrilled him, and suddenly, a completely different need for someone else’s body pervaded him.
When he found his own reflection in her crystal-clear eyes, he could only see himself. There was no mauve haze that blinded him senseless, nor was there purple blood that drilled through his veins. He only saw the eyes of Gray Fullbuster and he couldn’t seem to look away. A tide flung against his chest, recharging his heartless body with a cold torrent. It hushed against his ears, beckoning him to venture her body. His hand creeped to her delicate thighs, coiling carefully around them. With the other, he swiftly captured her jaw. Gray Fullbuster always got what he wanted.
“I don’t know why I helped you.” His eyes studied her for a moment, watching her hide behind her sweeping eyelashes. His other hand edged closer, riding higher as they dared towards her hips. Juvia restrained from letting out an exhale as she gawked back at him, too shocked to say anything.
“I also don’t know why you make me want to do this,” he muttered. Juvia’s lips opened in response, but before words spilled out, his lips slammed against hers. Their lips moulded together in a harmonious rhythm. His palms dug into her hip and harshly pushed her onto the mattress. She winced but before she could pull away, Gray grasped onto her tighter. He never had a prey escape from his grip, and Juvia Lockser was no exception. He lunged his mouth onto hers with a violent thrust. His tongue slipped across her bottom lip before prowling at her mouth, forcing its way inside. He slanted his body, pushing onto her and shifting his entire weight so he could claim her harder. When Juvia let out a small moan, Gray flinched as he felt his body rattle with pleasure. Her voice vibrated against his mouth as he enveloped his lips over hers hurriedly, attempting to force the same sound out of her. Juvia recoiled against his hold, her palms pressed hard at his chest at an attempt to push him away. Knitting his eyebrows together, Gray glided his lips over hers a final time before ripping his body away. A strand of saliva attached them together still, their faces inches away from each other. Juvia gasped, her breath unstable as she covered her mouth with both hands.
“Gray…?”
Juvia’s heart bruised against her chest as she found herself begging for more. Her body yearned for his embrace one last time and she almost gave in to his touch when she ached against his rough grasp against her hip.
“You’re hurting me,” she whispered. She watched as his eyes darkened, trailing down to her side that bruised purple. Its colour sent a shiver down his spine, a force writhing around his muscles before he felt his heart escalate. Digging his fingers into her hips, Juvia shrieked in pain. Her eyes watered as his grasp showed no signs of letting go. Pulling at his tightening grip, Juvia desperately tried to tear his hands away.
“What are you doing?” she screamed. Juvia’s eyes widened in shock as her bruise materialised into trickles of dust, spiralling until it abruptly burst into a flame that dissolved into thin air.
“Follow the hallways and you’ll find your way back.” Gray swiftly rose from the bed, rubbing at his palms that were stained red.
“Your hands…” Juvia wobbled onto her feet, attempting to take a closer look. “They’re bleeding.”
Gray retreated from her extended arms. “Go now,” he seethed. “Now!” Juvia backed away in astonishment. His eyes glared, an ombre of grey stirred inside his orbs as they followed Juvia who disappeared behind the closed door.
Gray glowered at his oozing hand. Vivid trains of blood discharged from his fingertips where they rested against her creamy skin. The sight of blood was a common occurrence for the exterminator, but when it belonged to him, it made him feel sicker than ever.

Chapter V - And he falls
Juvia glimpsed at Gray, whose features flickered against the lantern light. Her fingers cautiously hovered to his face, inches away. His jaw tightened as she gently caressed his cheeks with a trembling hand.
“Do you now know why you helped me?”
Gray replied with silence. His fingertips brushed against Juvia’s shoulder as he rebandaged her wound. At the corner of her eye, she watched as his hands worked swiftly. They twisted and turned, adjusting the white fabric so it secured against her shoulder. His eyes were obscured by strands of raven-black hair that had fallen to his face. She took a gulp as she felt his palm drift across her bare back. With a gentle tug, she let out a small grunt as Gray readjusted the safety pin.
“Somehow you always need saving,” he muttered. Juvia quietly pulled her knees to her chest, covering her exposed upper body.
“And somehow you’re always the one doing the saving,” she replied. Gray sent her a glare before tossing one of his shirts at her lap. Juvia hurriedly pulled it over her head.
“Is this how you thank me?” Gray turned, stripping off his own shirt. “I can throw you back in there anytime I want.”
“You won’t.”
Gray paused, his shirt dangling at his elbows as he paused to look at her. Juvia sat upright, her eyes staring right back at his. She appeared tiny with his shirt on, its baggy sleeves pooling at her elbows comically.
“Why?” he scoffed. “Do you want to wager your life?” Gray threw aside his shirt, but instead of retrieving another one, he began to approach her. “You trust me.”
Juvia felt herself shifting against the mattress. “What makes you think that I will always help you, Juvia Lockser?” Gray suddenly lunged forwards, an arm bracing the wall behind her. “I can easily kill you,” he slurred, gingerly brushing away a strand of her hair. He jerked his chin to her injured shoulder. “And I will actually kill you.”
Despite his advancements, Juvia tried to remain as still as possible.
“I will wager my life.” She took in a deep breath. “I do trust you, and I think you will always help me, but neither of us know the reason.” Gray twitched his eye in annoyance. “If you wanted to kill me,” she exhaled a shaky breath, “you would have done so already.” Juvia’s hands trailed against his bare chest. His pecs rose against her touch, slowly exhaling as her fingers grazed against his chiselled jaw. “I… really do trust you,” she whispered. “But I don’t know why, Gray.”
Gray’s eyes flickered in surprise, his hands clenched into a fist tightly before he pushed himself away from her.
“Don’t,” he growled under his breath. Juvia’s lips parted, but she was interrupted. “Stop talking.” Gray suddenly approached her once again, this time, his body lunged at her with a greater force. He angled his lips so they hovered inches away from hers. Juvia could feel his palms crawling up her thigh. His arms caged her in and all she could see was Gray. His eyelashes were lowered as he peered at her with caution.
Unconsciously, she closed the gap between them, brushing her lips against his. He instantly responded, his agape mouth driving against hers. They sealed lips for another brief second before Gray pulled away. Juvia’s eyes fluttered open as she flinched with shock. The way his eyes glazed over her made her stomach spiral. She felt her heart pound against her chest like a whirlwind, and she let it overwhelm her with fervour.
His intense eyes reminded her of his troubled gaze when she wailed against the hold of the doctor. As he lowered her down onto the bed, she almost fainted from the pain at her shoulder. His hands faltered closely around hers when she watched the unknown man extract the blade from her shoulder. Blood stained her clothes and yet all she could see was his blurry figure. Her arm throbbed, hammering violently against her head. A final wave of pain washed over Juvia, forcing a shriek out of her mouth before she gasped for air.
“You’re okay.”
Juvia nodded, her eyes heavy, and the last feeling she could remember was his thumb stroking her knuckles as she began to fall unconscious.
The way he stared at her when she slowly awoke mirrored the way he looked at her now.
“You care about me,” Juvia whispered. She ignored the thrashing of her heart and slanted her head, attempting to look into Gray’s averted eyes. “Gray,” she urged, “why?”
“Stop talking!” he barked. Juvia refused to back down as she wrapped her hands around his neck. Gray avoided her gaze.
“Look at me,” she screamed. “Why did you help me?” She pulled against his strength, forcing him to face her. Gray’s eyes shifted uncomfortably as her pupils stared widely at her.
He cringed as Juvia once again captured his lips with hers. Overlapping her mouth over his abruptly, she pulled away.
“Why did you take me here?” Her fingers dug into his neck as he once again resisted her grasp. “Tell me, where is the tunnel now?” Gray’s hands wrapped around her outstretched arms, eventually giving in to her persistence.
“All of your memories were supposed to be removed,” Gray growled. This time, he was the one who took a hold of her neck. “But you, Juvia,” he drawled, “somehow still have a mind of your own.” He pressed a thumb against her skin and paused, feeling the rapid clobbering of her pulse against his hold.
“Drifters are supposed to be devoid of any thought.” He slowly wrapped his palm around her chin, tugging it up so he could inspect her carefully. “You, on the other hand, still had the rationality to save others.”
“You tried to kill her children,” Juvia yelled. She instantly withdrew from his grasp, slapping his hand away. “You’re… the same as a murderer,” she croaked. “Do you know what it’s like to live in that tunnel?” Her hands trembled as she tried to push away dark thoughts. “You’re a murderer, Gray. Exterminators are basically murderers.” Her throat burned as she uttered the last word, trying her best to gulp back a sob. “Yet I’m so attracted to you,” she yelled, wiping back tears. “Why didn’t you just kill me?” Juvia creased her eyebrows, her features twisted painfully as realisation hit. “Am I just a plaything for you all?”
Gray pulled away, grabbing at her collar violently. “You’re an inconvenience to the administration, Juvia. Do you understand?” Juvia gasped out in pain, her shoulder receiving the force of his grasp. “And right now,” he snarled, “you’re being a hindrance to me.” He raised a pointed finger to the door. “Leave, before I regret my decision.”
Juvia felt her throat burn as she desperately tried to swallow a sob. “What else do you have to regret?” she screamed back. “You don’t regret, Gray. Don’t all you do is kill?” Juvia exhaled deeply, her breath wobbly as she tried to claw away his grip. A flash of anger tainted Gray’s eyes red. His eyebrows bulged together until he could feel his vein emit a purple glow. His fists clenched and they were close to being clobbered against her trembling body. His grasp against her tightened, jolting her closer.
The image of blood splattered across his vision. Bodies bare and lifeless. Their inscrutable faces turned white as blood drained from their necks, forming a deep ocean of blood. Gray’s nose twitched as he inhaled, the memories of every victim permeating into the earth.
His hand strangled at her neck, each finger curling around until Juvia.
“You know nothing,” he muttered. The image of an empty face suddenly flashed before his eyes; its discerning scar slithering down from his forehead, but its features remained blurred. Before Gray could concentrate on the familiar face, blood exuded from his neck. A blade punctured his flesh, and the handle of the dagger was clenched by Gray himself. Staring back at the faceless man with shock, Gray let the weapon fall with a clatter. At the corner of his eye, he watched in horror as his father creeped up from the ground. The concrete cracked at his fingertips as they slowly crawled up. His features became distorted with raw flesh and purple acid, mixing until it burned his face with a fracture.
“Gray!” The shrill sound that escaped from his father’s lips sent an ear-piercing sound through the narrowing walls. “Who did you kill this time?” Suddenly, the blade was once again in Gray’s hands, staining them with mauve liquid. “I expect great things of you,” his father screamed once again. This time, his voice sent a sharp pain through his head, sending Gray into an infinite cycle of flames that never died out. “Gray Fullbuster!” The repeated shrieks penetrated Gray’s head like a parasite, endlessly tormenting him. His eyes suddenly focused back to the girl who was heaving with pain.
“Gray!”
His eyes were bloodshot when he finally regained consciousness. His hands trembled against Juvia’s faltering voice, her throat swelling as his grasp instantly relaxed. Juvia collapsed onto the bed, coughing vigorously with her hand finding its way around her neck. Gray urgently rose and staggered backwards. His fingers pinched at the bridge of his nose, refusing to face her.
“I told you to go,” he inhaled. His voice quivered as he hastily glanced down at his hands only to find them empty. “I don’t want to regret killing you too.”
Juvia winced as she pushed herself up from the bed. Her uninjured hand pressed against his chest gently. She felt her heart pound, terrified, yet the courage to approach him arose from a place she didn’t’ know she possessed.
“I’m sorry, Gray,” she whispered. “I – I.” Juvia lost the words she wanted to say. “Thanks for saving my life.”
After she heard the slam of the door behind her, she allowed a tear to roll down her cheeks.

Chapter VI - Cascading feelings
“Where on earth did the captain take you?”
Gajeel’s boisterous voice echoed through the empty chamber, only to receive a playful punch from Lucy.
“You’re so loud, what if someone heard you?”
The dark-haired man simply scoffed. “It’s not like all sixty-one of the recruits saw them or anything,” he commented sarcastically. “Even Commander Scarlet was left speechless.” Gajeel turned his attention back to Juvia, who sat at the opposite side of Lucy’s bed. Her shoulder hammered painfully, yet all she could think about was Gray. His cold lips on hers. The way his muscular hold would never leave hers. Juvia’s voice caught in her throat as she finally allowed herself to speak.
“I-It doesn’t matter anymore,” she sighed. She felt her eyes burn, but she was not going to let another tear fall. “Thanks for worrying,” Juvia whispered, “but could I have some time alone?”
Gajeel and Lucy exchanged a frown, but eventually nodded in sync as Juvia’s eyebrows creased painfully. “Please?”
Juvia had no idea what time it was, nor what day. The walls of the chambers were left unscathed and she completely forgot about her tally she made back in the tunnel. Juvia exhaled but she instantly regretted as her shoulder flinched with a sudden pain that jolted through her entire body.
Before she could slip beneath the covers, she felt a blow across her face. The shock spread across her cheek, swelling painfully.
“Have you knocked her out?”
The familiar voice instantly sent Juvia’s eyes fluttering shut. Suddenly, she felt a coarse surface entwine her wrists together. A cloth was roughly shoved into her mouth, causing Juvia to gag.
“Carry her over here,” a second voice muttered. Juvia felt her body moved away from the bed. “I’ll follow you.”
Juvia bit down on her lips as she held back a scream. The man’s grasp seized her shoulders and they burned against her muscles as she felt herself being hoisted away from the chambers.
“Be as quiet as possible,” Bora seethed.
Juvia’s eyes slowly opened and she found her body hanging against the metal bar, inches away from falling into the pit. A rush of cold air cascaded against her face as her doom was presented in front of her.
“Should I throw her over now?”
Juvia almost jerked with fright as his voice echoed through the empty halls. Bora contemplated before snarling with a sinister thought. “No…” Juvia winced as she felt a harsh hand against her shoulder.
“Bora!” the other man barked. “What the hell are you doing? I don’t want to be caught.”
Bora simply ignored him, his hands clawing onto her injured shoulder. Juvia screamed through her restrains, but what caused her to sob helplessly was when she felt another hand slide nonchalantly into her shirt. His skin sent her cringing as she felt his fingers snake around her hips like a slug.
“You’re the one missing out,” Bora snickered. Juvia could feel her blood boil, desperately trying to writhe away from his unwelcomed touch. With all the energy she could muster, she kicked Bora’s face, sending him staggering backwards.
“What the fuck?” The other man reached out in an attempt to push her over the edge. Juvia slammed her eyes shut, letting out a scream as she felt a force against her.
Suddenly, she felt her hip crash against the metal railing as a strong hand encircled her. Juvia’s eyes fluttered open, landing on Gray. His face remained expressionless as he swiftly removed the cloth from her mouth.
His eyes were bloodshot as he creased his eyebrows at the two attackers. Bora backed away, panicking as Gray settled Juvia down onto the ground safely.
“Gray,” Juvia whispered. However, her whimper was left unanswered as Gray promptly turned away.
“C-Captain Fullbuster, please give me another chance.” Bora’s lips trembled as he immediately backed away. Juvia could swear that she saw Bora’s pants darken as he quivered in fear. With all motion lost completely, Bora fell backwards as Gray approached him with an obscurity Juvia had never seen in her entire life. A bleak haze casted over his pupils, hovering over his darkened eyelashes. Juvia could no longer remember the rope tied against her wrists and the throb that hammered at her shoulder. His eyes no longer mirrored the tame expression he held for her. It was almost as if he was a stranger.
Gray’s arms bulged as he thrashed fist against Bora’s face. With a swift step, he hurled the man over his shoulders and before Juvia could realise what was happening, Bora’s holler echoed through the pit as he descended into darkness.
Gray’s figure calmly approached the other man, whose face was distorted in pure fear. Juvia finally found her voice again.
“Gray, please,” Juvia cried out immediately. “Please take me away.”
Juvia held onto her breath as she watched Gray come to a complete halt. His eyes met hers for a brief moment as he turned to face her. Baring his teeth, Juvia watched in terror as his lips widened into a sinister smirk. Inevitably, Juvia shed the tear that she never knew she had kept at bay. His eyes glowered in delight as he snarled through his teeth.
“I will.”
But Juvia knew his words were no longer trustworthy as Gray had simply smashed his fist into the man’s face. His energy heightened with each blow he delivered. Juvia’s hands were now burning against her constraints as she desperately tried to tear away from them. However, her feet remained motionless as Gray’s merciless strikes continued. His knuckles flared red, crashing effortlessly into the man’s face until he was barely recognisable. The resounding howls of the man diminished with each attack. Juvia could only stare.
Red splattered across Gray’s cheek as he delivered the final blow, leaving the man faceless. Gray wiped the back of his hand across his face, smearing the blood until it tainted his skin. The exterminator
Juvia could only stare as a pool of blood began to expand around the motionless body. Her throat scorched against her saliva as she finally allowed tears to stream down her face. Her lips became ajar and let out a screech as all her fears suddenly ate at her. The overwhelming feeling of despair decided to hit her right at that moment and she realised that it was all because of Gray. All her pain and suffering were the result of Gray helping her – and he didn’t even know why.
»»————- ⚜ ————-««
Juvia shuddered as she watched Gray scrub at his knuckles. They glowed a mauve purple under the flickering light, revealing scatters of bruises all across his hand.
“Why did you do it?” Juvia’s voice penetrated the silence. Gray paused, his eyes darkened in thought. He curled his fingers into a fist and proceeded to harshly rub at his injuries, attempting to wipe away the blood from his hands. He suddenly gritted his teeth in annoyance, realising that Juvia’s gaze never wavered from him. His knuckles were now clean, but instead, a glowing wound glared back at him.
“Could you at least tell me that?” Juvia whispered. She remained determined, rising from the bed, ignoring the lingering pain at her shoulders. “Why you killed him?”
Gray flinched as he suddenly felt a pair of soft hands rested against his back. A shaky breath brushed against his shoulder as she gently leaned against him. “I-I still trust you,” she murmured. In an instant, something triggered at his heart and a cold breeze rushed through his bloodstream as he felt a flame dissipate away. Gray strained his body from thrashing violently as a hurricane within his body began to grow, thrashing across his chest. His bruised hand hastily grasped onto his chest, bunching the material into his fist he suddenly couldn’t contain himself anymore. The smooth skin that touched his rough one sent a spark against his throat. Swallowing hard, Gray turned to face the girl. Shaking, he struggled to touch her wet cheeks.
It was the second time he saw her cry, and for some reason, it really hurt. Something in his heart would grapple for life, as if letting go will send him into an eternal abyss. To his surprise, Juvia immediately nestled her cheek into his palm.
“Will you tell me, Gray?” With her petite hands, she guided his other hand to her waist. “Please, I want to know.”
Juvia’s sapphire eyes reflected his dark ones, and he couldn’t seem to look away. The way he felt himself burn from her touch caused him to lose all sense as the words she spoke were lost. He could only focus on the way those supple lips slightly opened and closed, revealing a place he wouldn’t mind venturing again. Gray cautiously grazed his thumb across her pale cheek, wiping at another tear that trailed down her face.
“You needed help,” he muttered. Inching closer, Gray allowed his forehead to rest against hers. Juvia nuzzled her face towards his, but didn’t back down.
“Yes, I needed help but why did you help me?” Juvia paused, moving her face away for a brief moment. Gray refused to part from her warmth and groaned softly. “Answer me, Gray,” Juvia demanded gently. She let out an inaudible gasp as she felt her body being pulled in closer. The tip of their noses touched briefly before she felt his eyelashes flutter open against her face. His onyx orbs bored into her.
“Because I could.” His husky voice infiltrated her and she let it vibrate through her body. He threaded his fingers between hers.
“T-That’s the same as not knowing,” Juvia stuttered. She became breathless as she felt the coldness of his fingers link between hers. “Give me the real reason, Gray.”
In response, he simply tightened his hold, curling his fingertips around the back of her hand. Stroking her hand gingerly, he clenched his jaw as he realised that he didn’t have a real reason himself.
“I have this strange feeling I have never felt before,” he hummed against her. Juvia gulped in surprise as she felt his lips skim her philtrum. “I really want to touch you.”
Juvia could feel her face burn as she felt his hand leave his cheek and trace over her chin. The idling touch of his fingertips almost seemed to teased her as they trailed down to her neck.
“I killed them because I want you.”
Juvia couldn’t find her voice as his lips closed the gap between them. The way his lips protruded across hers left her stunned. His teeth gently tug at her bottom lip, begging for entrance. Juvia obeyed his command, eagerly letting her mouth ajar. The delicate twirl of his tongue expertly danced with hers, locking for a moment before he slanted his mouth so he could enter farther. Juvia let out a moan as she felt his hands embrace her tightly against him. With their chests pressed together, their hearts collided and waltzed to the same captivating rhythm.
Reluctantly, they pulled away, gasping for air. Juvia shuddered in delight as she felt his finger rub against her hip. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in so their foreheads touched once again.
“Gray?”
The exterminator allowed his eyes to survey her carefully.
“Thank you for saving me,” she mumbled. “Again.”
Gray let out a deep chuckle; once again giving Juvia butterflies in her stomach.
“Do you feel guilty?”
Juvia immediately regretted speaking as she found herself losing the heat from touching him. his arms tore away from hers and his body immediately retreated away into a place Juvia found difficult to see.
“I don’t have to feel guilty.” He turned slowly to look at her again. “And neither do you.”
Juvia frowned, looking down at her feet in both annoyance and disappointment.
“I’m grateful that you saved me, Gray, but why did you do that to him?”
She flinched as Gray’s fists calmly reached down to the hem of his shirt to pull it away roughly.
“Do what?” He turned, etching the sides of his lips into an empty smile. “I don’t understand, Juvia,” he laughed dully. “I killed him for you, didn’t I? How I do it shouldn’t matter.”
Juvia hesitantly rested a hand on his bare back. “But… didn’t you think that it was inhumane to kill him like that?”
Gray simply cocked an eyebrow in confusion. “Inhumane?” His eye twitched for a brief moment before tossing the shirt aside. “I don’t understand?” He approached Juvia once again, this time, an unfamiliar glower haunted him. Juvia backed away unknowingly as he once again caught her between his arms. Roughly capturing her lips again, Juvia cried out in shock. His lips hungrily overlapped against hers, consuming her whole. Juvia desperately tried to tear away from him, but her refusal of his touch only caused him to grasp her harder. His teeth bit at her lips and Juvia could feel them swell as he slipped his tongue between hers swiftly. Finally, he let go of her, but this time Juvia felt her heart sink with emptiness. She felt lonely as his eyes never once looked at her the second time they kissed that night. And as someone who has been on her own for all her life, this was the loneliest she had ever felt.

Chapter I - The End
Letting her feet collide onto the mud that left her sinking into the earth every day, Juvia heaved her exhausted body through the murky ground.
Exactly on time, the eighty-first ear-piercing shriek could be heard down the tunnel. Juvia dragged a shard against the limestone wall, ritualistically marking another crooked line to her mural. There was no way of knowing whether it was day or night, but the distant screaming of people signalled the start of another morning.
It was the eighty-first day of living in this hellhole.
The absence of any light obscured Juvia’s sense of sight, leaving her ears susceptible to even the tiniest of sounds. However, the noise that haunted her everyday was the soft cries that echoed through the narrowing walls of her prison.
Directly in front of her was a young mother who cradled a set of twins. The crowded rows of people made it difficult to discern them from one another, but Juvia could only seem to hear the woman’s soothing voice that embraced both her children and Juvia in a warm tune.
When Juvia could barely breathe in the foul, dusty tunnel, it amazed her when the mother could inhale a deep breath and still emulate the voice of an angel’s. “Look forward to the light,” she would sing. But everyone knew there was no light to look forward to.
The dim tunnel left the woman’s looks to Juvia’s imagination. So, she took the liberty to formulate a woman with sapphire hair that encased her bony cheeks. Her slender finger would occasionally brush against the smooth skin of her newborns. However, as Juvia marked the wall as the days went by, their cries became increasingly palpable. Often deprived of both food and water for several days in a row, the soft humming would be accompanied by wailing as her babies became hungrier and weaker. As if forgetting that death is knocking on their door, the mother’s eyes are forever drawn on the faltering hearts of the babies.
Juvia wasn’t any stronger herself. She watched her food portion disappear into the twins’ agape mouths as she became paler and thinner. She had been secretly sliding across her share of bread so that the family of three could stay conscious for as long as they needed to. Juvia decided that it was payment for the singing that kept her sane every day.
None of the prisoners spoke to each other. There were no guards nor rules, but it was unanimously agreed that there was no need for human interaction when death was inevitably close.
Juvia was used to this emptiness, but when this emptiness penetrated her mind, she was starting to lose it. The complete absence of thought left her utterly dumbfounded as to how she got here; or who she was.
The only memory she managed to retain was vivid. It jolted her awake in the middle of her sleep, where her heart would pound so violently that it hurt. Juvia grasped her chest to alleviate the pain but instead, a sting would travel up her spine. The prick triggered fragments of blurred memories, where she envisioned the sensation of falling. When the force of the souring wind struck her motionless, it sent her spiralling into another infinite tunnel. Her hair stuck to her face, dripping with sweat when a thick violet gas replaced the gust. It entrapped Juvia in a prison concocted by her own thoughts, sending her world into a descendant of darkness.
Juvia awakened to a scream.
It came directly across from her, but there were three screams instead of one.
Juvia stumbled to her feet as she adjusted her eyes to the familiar darkness. But instead, she saw a looming figure emerge from the sombre passageway. In each hand, a baby dangled dangerously, out of reach from their mother. The cacophonous screech that escaped her lips left Juvia’s ears ringing and it sent her children wailing. The scream was much more deafening than the eighty-one screams Juvia had heard.
Before Juvia realised what she was doing, her body lunged forward, as if saving her own children. Her frail figure collided onto the stranger, startling him as she grabbed a baby from his hand. Juvia never knew how thankful she was for the damp mud that cushioned her landing. However, as she sunk back down into the mud, she realised that she should’ve been grateful that she was able to stay alive for the past eighty-two days.
Towering over her limp body was a cloaked figure whose obsidian leather shrouded his angular jaw. His features assimilated into the darkness, leaving Juvia’s eyes clouded with confusion. The subtle sheen that radiated from his chest was an alexandrite plaque, intricately embroidered onto his cloak. It was a badge that anyone recognised, but it was also the very thing everyone prayed they would not see.
The tunnel was as silent as ever as the hooded figure leaned down on one knee, surveying the powerless woman. Juvia winced as she felt his gaze travel across her tattered condition. His stare penetrated her, so intense that it reminded her of the pain in her stomach from being food deprived. Juvia became increasingly faint after that fall, yet she grasped onto the baby in both arms. Trembling, her only comfort was the infant that was so much smaller and weaker than her.
The stranger raised a hand, roughly seizing her chin in his gloved grasp. Before he could inspect his prey, Juvia jerked away from his grip so suddenly that she felt her body collapse beneath her. However, a tenacious hand slipped right behind her waist as she lost control.
Juvia felt his breath waver as her disorientated body gave in to his hold. Jerking at her arm, he tore the baby from her and the silence was once again broken by a scream. Juvia fell to the ground, colliding against the frigid surface as she watched the man rise to leave. In each hand, he enclosed a baby, taking away everything the mother had. An exterminator had killed three innocent people in one night.
Juvia convulsed at the thought. Her hopelessness enslaved her to tears as she felt her hands fall lifeless. Her only warmth dissipated into the darkness. At that moment, Juvia realised that it was the mother and her children who saved her. They were the ones who gave her the reason to wake up every day. Her voice was so foreign yet familiar that it reminded Juvia of affection – something she had always yearned for.
The thought of waking up to silence every morning allowed Juvia to finally understand why silence was so frightening. It was the way she would tremble as she became consumed by uncontrollable thoughts; the unknown gloom that was always lingering in her brain, blurring her judgement. The utter bewilderment of waking to an ear-splitting scream reminded her of how worthless life was.
With one last protest, she managed to heave her weight away from his dominion. She lunged forwards as she lost all rationality. Her throat burned as she let her dry lips form words for the first time in forever.
“Let them go.”
The man turned unhurriedly, tossing the two children right into the arms of the mother who urgently cradled them into an embrace.
Juvia convulsed as she felt his glare pervade her as he completely lost interest in the children. She whimpered as his combat boots took easy strides across the sinking ground. Before Juvia could comprehend what was happening, his forefinger snapped her chin upwards.
Suddenly, the tunnel didn’t seem as daunting as she locked eyes with the masked figure. His fingertips were icy, trailing across her jaw. His palm steadily rested around her neck where they eventually rested at her throat. His onyx eyes followed his fingers as he watched her with an eerie calmness, as if about to consume her whole. She let out a breath she didn’t realise she was holding. His lips etched into a sinister smile as he leaned into Juvia. A nauseating smell of blood overpowered her as his body moulded into hers swiftly. In a husky whisper, his breath scoured her ear.
“Everything here can kill you, but I do it the most efficiently.”
Eighty-two days in this hell hole and the first piece of advice she received was a life threat.

Gruvia one-shot || Juvia’s insecurities
@ynaishteru : I’d like to request a gruvia fanfic! Where a hot mage flirts with Gray (who doesn’t care, but also doesn’t dismiss the mage) and Juvia gets mad and jealous. But the mage insults Juvia? Like a severe insult that will make Juvia sad and really really insecure then Gray gets protective of her. Thank you!
A/N: I’m so so so sorry for the super late response but here it is finally! Also, I finished my 3 hour scholarship exam today and I’m completely liberated :,) prepare yourselves for more gruvia content in the next few weeks :D
Juvia couldn’t contain her anger.
The stranger had her eyes locked on Gray, and her slender finger would occasionally slide across his chest playfully. His familiar chain that would usually be hanging low at his collarbone was instead entangled between the unknown woman’s fingers. The sound of them clattering against her nails annoyed Juvia irrationally.
“Gray, you’re hilarious!” she would squeal. Leaning against the ice mage, she would steal a look from Juvia who trembled with anger.
Her blood boiled, nearly on the verge to steaming as she found herself admiring the sight. The woman’s auburn hair trailed down to her back and was parted at the side, revealing a set of creamy shoulders that peeked through her revealing tank-top. Her features complimented Gray’s charcoal hair and her plush lips almost seemed like an ornament to his mischievous smirk.
Juvia had to admit that the two looked like the perfect couple. The mage’s agile legs would at times brush against Gray’s, almost mockingly as Juvia sat two seats away from the intimate pair.
She was attractive – even beautiful and Juvia knew she was nowhere near in comparison. Her usually modest appearance seemed to be backfiring on her right now, but she desperately wanted to hide away as the ginger’s eyes scanned over the water mage, as if challenging her.
Juvia wanted to slap her away for eternity.
“Juvia.”
The water mage snapped from her daze as she heard Gray’s deep voice vibrate through her chest. Juvia felt her heart sink as her response was only retaliated with a confused gaze. “Everything alright?”
She quickly gathered her hands onto the table and brought her shoulders back. “Yes, Gray-sama,” she beamed. “Juvia’s alright.”
But she wasn’t. She felt deflated the moment she straightened her posture. Juvia couldn’t help but gaze down over at herself. Beneath her clasped hands were her thighs and she couldn’t help but realise how big they looked. Her skin was sickish white, and she looked like a ghost. She could not compare to the beauty that sat on Gray’s lap like a throne.
“Gray?”
Juvia snapped her attention back to the couple and frowned as she watched the woman twirl a slender finger between her auburn hair before leaning in closer. “Would you like to grab something to eat?” Her eyelashes fluttered in triumph as the water mage shrunk down into her seat.
Juvia hastily pulled her chin down and bit her lip as she felt a tear threatening to fall. She promised herself she wouldn’t interfere with Gray’s life, and she would be happy for him no matter what. Which was why she almost panicked when Gray uttered four simple words that almost sent the water mage to the moon.
“Sorry, I’m with Juvia.”
Juvia’s eyes lit up in delight as she felt Gray’s shy gaze flicker over her.
Before Juvia could rush over to his side, a finger was pointed at her aggressively. “Her? Why would you go with…her?” The mage twitched uncomfortably as the woman rested a hand on Gray’s lap before saying four words that sent Juvia back to earth. “You can do better,” she shrugged.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the hazy reflection of herself staring back. Her hair was messy and tangled between strands of darker blue hair. At her shoulders hung the most ordinary and boring dress Juvia decided she ever laid eyes on. Bringing her arm to her chest, she desperately tried to hide her wobbly breasts and her legs twisted together so her hips would look narrower.
She was right. Gray could do so much better. It was undeniable as Juvia gazed back at her dull eyes.
She was on the verge of crying, but she wasn’t going to let them get the satisfaction. Nervously wiping at her eyes, Juvia stumbled out of her seat but tripped miserably. Too shocked to react, her face landed against the harsh reality the floor offered her.
She wanted to evaporate away forever.
Pulling her arms to her face, she bit back a sob. Not only did she have an unsatisfactory appearance, but she was also clumsy and most importantly, nowhere near her Gray-sama. She could barely even see him anymore. He was progressing, but she stood still.
He could do so much better.
“She’s so pathetic.”
Before Juvia could peel her body away from the unwelcoming cold floor, she felt a strong grip encircle her arm.
“Shut the fuck up,” Gray barked. His eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched angrily as the woman glared at the water mage.
Turning his attention back to Juvia, his features softened as he took her in. The familiarity of her blue locks swirled past her back and its softness tempted Gray to lean in and wander through them with his hand. The feathery material of her cloth framed her adorable cheeks which flushed with embarrassment. He couldn’t help but tense as he felt her ample chest rub against his arm. They bounced gently as she exhaled and inhaled. Her eyes quivered with tentativeness as she gaped back at him.
“Come on Juvia, lets go,” he murmured. With a firm pull, Juvia was back at her feet.
“Stay away from Juvia with your meaningless words.” Gray patted down Juvia’s dress hurriedly as he refused to leave her side. “I don’t want people like you around her, understood?”
The woman rested a hand on her hip and chuckled. “Sure, whatever. Your precious Juvia isn’t even that great.”
Juvia’s heart throbbed painfully as she waited for a response from Gray but earnt none. Was she not worth fighting for anymore?
But when Juvia peaked past her lidded eyelashes, she saw Gray scanning her legs silently. He searched for bruises and when he saw one, his jaw would clench as he leaned back down to stroke at it gently. Her heart melted but that was when she realised how silly she was for thinking that Gray thought nothing of her. Gray wasn’t a man of words, Juvia reminded herself.
She didn’t know how she managed to love another human being a little more every day.
Seeing that the ice mage had completely lost interest, the stranger scoffed, “You’re missing out Gray, there’s plenty of fish in the sea.”
To this, Gray straightened back up and veiled an arm around Juvia’s hips. Aware of the size of them, Juvia squirmed uncomfortably but the thought was lost as Gray tightened his hold.
“You say I deserve better? Then I want the sea.” Gray turned to study Juvia carefully, allowing his eyes to wander instantaneously to her lips.
“And in case you haven’t realised, Juvia’s the sea.”
Juvia almost fainted from his words. She felt her face ignite and allowed her palms to caress them to cool them down. Tensing her shaking legs to stable herself, Juvia couldn’t help but squeal mentally. But she could do nothing about her pulsing heart that rocked her entire body motionless.
The woman shuddered with anger and stormed off after letting out a frustrated scream.
To the rain woman’s surprise, Gray’s warm grasp never let her side and instead, he twirled her so she could face him.
“Juvia, I meant that.”
Gray’s ash-black eyes dilated as he gazed down at his prize. His knuckles were bright red as they clenched Juvia’s hips confidently. “I wanted you to know that those words weren’t meaningless,” he rubbed at his neck nervously. “And they were intended for you and only for you to hear.” He became flabbergasted as he lost his train of thought. “Juvia I–”
Petite lips rested on his.
Enveloping the girl within his arms, he reciprocated, daring to venture beyond her luscious lips. With a tender bite, Gray let his teeth sink in on her bottom lip. Juvia moaned in surprise and the response he received encouraged him to go further. After stealing her uncertain fingers between his, he encircled them so that they clasped together. A playful tongue slipped between her agape mouth and tenderly framed them as she granted permission.
Eventually they parted for oxygen, and Gray almost thought he was lost at sea. Juvia was phenomenal and he wouldn’t trade her for the world.
Like the sea, she embodied him so easily and like the sea, he would die without her.
Hopefully I’ve managed to do this to your hearts:

Gruvia one-shot || Gray’s heart
thank you for sending me in your requests! I’ve only received two so far, so keep them coming!!! 🥰❤️ also,, i just finished my last exam today 😭👍🏻🥳 these gruvia drabbles will therefore be bombarding your homepage for the next few days ;) if you enjoy, i’d appreciate it a lot if you reblog 💙🥺
@aconstellationofmemories : Gray trying to get something for Juvia and acting like a tsun when he gives it to her. Juvia suffocates him with all her love.
A glistening locket entangled itself between Gray’s rough fingers. An azure jewel sat between its entwining patterns, carefully ingrained into its delicate material. The ice-mage held it up, watching it swirl and sparkle under the blinding rays of the sun. It’s delicacy almost made it look fragile, as if it would shatter at any second. Gray let it drop back into the palm of his hands.
His lips curved upward in delight as he carefully slid open the locket. Hidden within was a sculptured heart, with curves that were smoothened out by a shimmering blue dust. It didn’t seem fragile at all – instead, it was obscured by a thin layer of glass that reflected his gaze. It reminded him of a certain someone; both beautiful on the outside and on the inside, but most importantly, he could see the same glisten it had when she laid her eyes on him.
Erza peered over the mage’s shoulder and smirked. “For someone in particular?”
Gray shuddered and quickly let the locket fall back into his pocket. “It’s nothing.”
The red-haired woman nudged him at the shoulder. “She’ll love it.”
Before Gray could stutter a reply, she quickly darted to join Jellal, sneaking an arm between his.
Gray chuckled, a blush hinting at his cheeks as he shoved a hand inside his pocket to trace the fine jewel. Maybe she would like it. Her hands would clasp together in delight, throwing a shy glance at Gray before letting the delicate jewelry fall between her slender fingers. She would then peer closer, letting her beautiful blue eyes take in the locket. As her petite hands went to open the locket, she would call out his name lovingly, “Gray-sama, I love it!”
Gray stifled a chuckle as he imagined her inaudible gasp upon the sight of the heart. Would she jump in glee? Perhaps she saw it as a reply or even a confession. Gray wouldn’t mind. After all, he knew what he wanted. He would then lean in slowly to kiss that surprised look off her face. Her soft lips would respond immediately and willingly. He could finally taste those alluring lips, letting them melt between his.
He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. He pressed his other hand to his chest and gulped as he felt it pounding like crazy. He wanted to see Juvia now.
“Ice-brain!”
Gray frowned and let a muscular arm swing across his shoulder. He stumbled forwards from the impact and grumbled. “What do you want, Natsu?”
“Just wonderin’ what you were up to.”
“Have you seen Juvia?”
Natsu glanced backwards and shrugged. “Dunno, haven’t seen her for a while.” Natsu raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
Gray shoved his arm away and let the locket fall deeper into his pockets as he strutted away. “It’s nothing.”
Natsu jogged to catch up, frowning as he watched Gray sulk. “Why are you always so moody? I swear you’re moodier than Lucy on her–”
A hand slapped Natsu’s head. “Shut up, Natsu!” Lucy crossed her arms across her chest as Natsu gave her a sheepish look. “It’s Gray, he’s being weird,” Natsu jerked his head back to the ice mage who was already a mile away. “As usual.”
Gray could feel his pace quicken as he neared the guild hall. As his feet brought him faster across the concrete floor, he could feel the locket follow his steps, bouncing up and down in his pockets. Gray tightened his grip around it, in hopes of controlling his heart rate as it also bounced uncontrollably.
He could feel his face burning as he saw familiar azure-blue hair peak from the crowd. Before he could hurry over, the water-mage whirled and flashed him with one of her beautiful smiles. Her eyes, as predicted, twinkled at the sight of him. She carefully maneuvered her way between the rowdy guild members, muttering a few apologies as she pushed past. A pout crept to her lips as a tall man obscured her view of him. Gray growled in annoyance and charged forwards, grabbing her hand from around the man who didn’t realise the spectacular view he was blocking.
“G-Gray-sama!” Juvia fell into his strong hold. Gray was determined to keep her there.
“Juvia…” The water mage shivered as she felt his deep voice tickle her ear. “I-I have something for you,” he muttered. Unwillingly, he let a hand slip away from her slender back. Finally finding the courage to pull the locket out, he let the now-cold ornament rest in his hands. Juvia swirled her head in response but Gray pulled her head to his chest. “Wait….”
He gently parted away a thick lock of hair, sweeping it away from the nape of her neck. Grazing his fingers between her silky hair, he fixated the chain around her neck. After hearing the small ‘click’, he pulled away for a moment, and breathed in the sight in front of him.
As her eyes averted down to her chest, her eyelashes fluttered in surprise and Gray prepared for her squeal of delight. Her surprised hug, or even a kiss. However, minutes have passed, and she still had her gaze locked onto the ornament around her neck.
“Juvia…?” Gray let out a breath he didn’t realise he was holding. Did she not like the gift? Was it too extreme? Now that he thought about it, the heart in the middle did weigh quite a bit… was it uncomfortable around her neck? Was his heart the one that was the burden?
Gray worriedly tilted her chin so he could gaze into her beautiful eyes. To Gray’s surprise, her eyes were sparkling from tears. She hurriedly pushed her overflowing tears away but to both of their dismay, more kept falling. Gray narrowed his eyebrows and concern washed over his face. He could feel his chest scrunch into pain as he watched the girl sob uncontrollably.
If he knew she’d be in this much pain, he should’ve never bought the locket. He should’ve never told her about his feelings. His feelings weren’t needed after all.
Unknowingly, his grip tightened as he hung his head in regret, but mostly disappointment.
Was he… too late?
His hold loosened as he watched her lips distort into a frown. Instead of clasping her hands together in delight, they were hastily rubbing at her eyes. Instead of peering closely at the locket, she desperately tried to look away from it. Instead of saying “Gray-sama, I love it!” she said nothing.
This wasn’t meant to happen.
He let her go.
“Gray-sama…”
Juvia trembled, holding her hands close to her chest she slowly glanced at Gray. “Is this…for Juvia?” Gray blinked in confusion.
“Did Gray-sama think about Juvia as he chose this?”
Gray pressed a hand to the back of his neck. “I-I thought it’d look beautiful on you.” It was his turn to shake.
“Does Gray-sama think it looks beautiful on Juvia?”
Gray couldn’t believe what he heard. Is this woman even aware of her beauty? Who was he kidding? He could see the same reflection of himself in her eyes just as he gazed into the heart. He knew this was the right choice. Her lips twitched as her eyebrows knitted together in concern.
Gray was breathless. Her chest was pressed against his, gently rising as she breathed in…breathed out… She had him completely in love.
“You’re the one that makes it look good, Juvia.” Gray hid behind the back of his hand. “You’re so fucking beautiful Juvia,” he mumbled. He could feel his eyes dilate out of focus as he waited for her response. His hands dripped with sweat and slowly, he lost the ability to feel his feet.
With a firm tug, Juvia pressed her lips to his. Gray raised both hands in surprise. He let his eyes flutter shut as he felt her tiptoes lean into him. He immediately pulled her back into a close embrace, pressing his palm into the small of her back. Another hand trailed past her shoulders and to her necklace. Her lips were softer than he’d predicted. Instead of melting her lips in his, her mouth fit right into his. Gray hurriedly raised her chin, tilting her back as he leaned forwards. Her lips cushioned him with an aroma of comfort. He didn’t want to ever pull away. Gray nibbled gently at her lip and his other hand fiddled at the intricate patterns of the locket.
He was utterly in love with her.

Gruvia one-shot || Gray’s future
Anonymous: hiiiiiii im so glad ure coming back soon! i missed u loads! i have an idea for a story. here’s the premise: so um like gruvia’s kid suddenly came in the past. the guild started an uproar. gray checked what was up. and he saw the kid. and people kept saying oh he looked like juvia and a bit like gray but the kid lied and said gray’s not his father (bc uncle natsu said to) “mom married someone else” gray began doubting and stuff and just angst
Rows of luminous orbs scattered through the guild hall, igniting the rainbow coloured members who chattered excitedly amongst themselves. Everyone was huddled around a table, inquisitive yet perplexed at the peculiar sight.
“Is this Gray and Juvia’s child?”
“I mean… he’s got features from both Gray and Juvia, right?”
Lucy peered past the towering shoulders of the crowd, urgently pushing past to get a better look. “Excuse me!”
After being squeezed through a series of arms, Lucy finally set her eyes upon the rumoured child.
Bending over at the hip was Natsu, chuckling and making small talk with the doe-eyed boy.
His navy hair swirled at his neck and tickled his ears. As he gazed up at Natsu, a set of tiny eyelashes fluttered in amusement.
“Natsu!” Lucy rushed to the salmon-haired man and frowned. “Tell me what’s going on.”
Natsu straightened up and wrapped an arm around the boy. “This is Juvia’s son!” he exclaimed. His eyes lit up with delight as the crowd mumbled amongst themselves. “Apparently, Levy found a spell to bring someone from the future and so here he is!”
Lucy raised an eyebrow but scanned the young boy again. He had the same matching outfit as Juvia; soft, white cotton encircled his neck, followed by a half tucked-in blue robe. However, at his feet were a pair of combat boots that resembled Gray’s.
The most captivating part was his eyes – they were narrowed downwards yet held an innocent gleam that she could see in Juvia when her beloved ‘Gray-sama’ came to view. There was no doubt that he was Gray and Juvia’s child.
Lucy leaned over and gave the boy a little pat on the head. “What’s your name?”
He glanced up and down at Lucy before giving her a pout. Juvia’s signature pout; Lucy noted. “I don’t have one yet.”
Lucy tilted her head in confusion. “Have you not…met your dad yet?”
His eyes lit up at the mention of his parents. “M-my Daddy? Do you know where he is?”
Lucy snuck a look at Natsu, who didn’t seem to get the hint as he munched away at a chicken breast. She sighed in annoyance but quickly flashed an awkward smile back at the boy.
“Sure, I do. Your last name is Fullbuster and your father is Gray,” she explained. She hastily glanced back into the crowd, searching for the ice and water mage. “He must be here somewhere…”
“Daddy is also here?” Tiny beams in his eyes radiated with excitement. “I want to see him!”
Just as the boy started to tug at Lucy’s arm, the doors clattered open and Gray stepped in. His hair was scuffled as he swept a hand through his black strands. A thumb was tucked in a belt that held his baggy pants at the hip and on his feet were a pair of combat boots. His usual frown lingered at his lips as he knitted his brows together. “Were you saying something about me?”
“Gray!” Lucy ignored his agitation and placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “This is Juvia’s son from the future.”
The entire guild fell silent, glancing at one and another in confusion.
“Does this mean that Gray…” A few men chuckled in delight whilst others laughed amongst themselves.
“This is my son?”
Gray found great difficulty in letting the words slip from his mouth.
His own family.
With Juvia.
The ice mage focused his gaze onto his son. He was just as beautiful as his mother, with naturally soft, curly hair resting above his eyes. Those eyes… it seemed as if he was looking back at a duplicate of Juvia. Her very existence sparked all kinds of thoughts within Gray. Except staring back at his son as of now made him simply grateful.
If he was from the future, does this mean a future with Juvia?
His hands started to sweat, and he wiped at his pants roughly. That’s when he noticed that they were trembling with his every movement. He gulped in an attempt to contain his emotions. His throat woudl burn in response as he felt them swell. He wasn’t going to cry in front of all these people.
But this magical moment dissipated after Natsu spoke out four, heart-breaking words.
“He’s not Gray’s son.”
The guild fell silent.
The sound of Gray’s heart dropping could perhaps break the silence, except he wasn’t going to let it. Especially not in front of Natsu.
A future without Juvia.
Maybe it’ll be for the best. He probably died before he could start a family with Juvia. He was probably too late anyway.
She could’ve moved on, maybe even date Bora. That bastard Bora. His blood boiled in response to the name.
He wanted to pull her in from behind and kiss her at her neck, trailing the soft skin beneath his hungry lips before reaching her jaw. He would then suck at it gently, leaving behind a mark to tell everyone that Juvia was his.
He wanted to see her squeal in delight as she showed him her pregnancy test. The two lines marked at the centre. Her soft breasts would then press against his chest as she embraced him with excitement. She would then envelope her arms across his waist and snuggle into his arms. She would then ask, “Gray-sama, do you want a boy or a girl?” Her fingers would then twist themselves between his hair as she kissed his cheek gently. “Juvia would like a boy and a girl.” Her delicate voice would send shivers down his spine. It would then be inevitable to cup her thighs between his hands and carry her to the bedroom.
Gray’s eyes twitched as he felt his head pound louder than his heart.
That was when he knew everything would go wrong.
He would knock open the bedroom door and, instead, he sees an unknown man entangled between Juvia’s supple legs. His vile hands would try to grab at her breasts, and then at her waist. The creature would then stick his disgusting tongue at the exact spot Gray had marked her.
Juvia was so fucking important it hurt to think that he lost her.
But he wouldn’t let anyone – not even Fairy Tail – know of these feelings. And certainly not Natsu.
Gray wasn’t ready to let his vulnerability show. He would break so easily, and he was sure of it.
Gray almost laughed aloud at his pathetic self. He was such as coward for avoiding the simplest of things.
He can’t face Juvia like this. Not in this miserable state.
She deserved so much better.
Gray let his jaw relax and released his fingers from his bloodied palms. He could barely feel the pain from his blood-soaked hands. He took a sharp breath and gritted his teeth as he let out a simple “Oh.”
Hastily tousling his hair, Gray shrugged as Natsu responded with shock. His face was conjured into a confused frown. “W-wait, Gray–”
Before the fire-mage could say another word, the boy marched up to Gray and peered at him with puzzled eyes. Gray refused to look at him – he looked too similar to Juvia.
He resembled a pointless future. Damn to hell the man that had this beautiful child with Juvia.
“You’re not…my Daddy?”
Gray winced as he tore his gaze away, he was willing to look anywhere but at Juvia’s son.
“But Mummy showed me Daddy,” he tugged at his pockets and rested in between his tiny fingers was a Gray plushy. “I’m sure you’re my Daddy.”
His lips tugged at his cheeks, forming a pout. The same pout Juvia would have as she burnt her ‘Gray-buns’, the pout when Gray would reject her so many times despite her being the perfect one.
Gray buried his face into his hands.
“I-I want a Daddy…”
Gray peered through his disarrayed hair and he couldn’t bear it when he felt a miniscule finger curl around his bicep. “Do you not want to be my Daddy?”
Gray couldn’t feel the sharp sting of his nails digging into his wounded hands. His pulse almost shredded through his skin as he let his heart hammer at his chest. His surroundings spun out of focus and everything was disappearing; except for the beautiful, young boy that stood in front of him.
The boy that wished to call him his father.
Gray gathered the boy’s delicate body into his rough one.
He was going to protect his son no matter what.
“Please don’t cry,” Gray whispered. He pressed his lips to the boy’s dark, wavy hair and let his eyes flutter shut.
Fuck his pride.
“B-but Daddy, you’re crying too.”
The ice mage didn’t realise that a tear had trickled down his cheek. He let out a choke as he allowed his feelings to pour through his body.
He submerged his face into the slim shoulder of his son, allowing the ephemeral smell of Juvia waft into his senses.
He slumped down and collapsed into the boy’s chest, breathing in the foreign yet familiar scent that he knew he would come to love.
This was his son and no one — not even Natsu— could say otherwise.

Gruvia drabble || Gray’s feelings Part 1 (Gruvia day)
Thanks to Anon for requesting this! You know who you are ;) This drabble was also inspired by a prompt which you will see later !! Sorry for the lack of posts recently. Exams have really eaten up my time and motivation :c I hate to say but this isn’t my best writing so please excuse the poor expressions and writing in general 😅 Doing a Shakespeare essay before this has already drained my energy 🥺 This was supposed to be posted on Gruvia day but as you can see... that failed :((((( Anyways, with excuses put aside please enjoy!
Erza tossed her vermillion locks behind her back, crossing her arms sternly.
“You’re not going to talk to Gray today.”
Juvia paused half-stitch, an unfinished Gray plushy entwined between her fingers as she did so.
“W-what?” Juvia’s eyes widened in shock.
“Be the one who’s distant this time. He should be more proactive in expressing his feelings, Juvia.”
The water mage frowned, letting ‘Gray’ fall to her knees as she set aside her yarn. “But Juvia is already grateful that Gray-sama acknowledges her,” she replied softly. “Juvia doesn’t want to cause any trouble for Gray-sama.”
It was now Erza’s turn to frown. “That’s not the attitude, Juvia! It’s time for Gray to show some affection! Treat him coldly for once, see what he’ll do.”
She snatched ‘Gray’ from the water mage and tossed it aside as she caught Juvia’s pale hands between hers. “Give it a try. If Gray does show any affection it means you’ve won, right?”
The water mage’s frown deepened as she gazed down at her enclosed hands.
“B-but what if Gray-sama doesn’t show any feelings at all?”
Juvia’s insecurities were resurfacing again. Her darkest days flashed in front of her eyes, distorting the sight she had in front of her. She didn’t want to know Gray’s feelings. She didn’t want to be rejected. Tears started forming as the thought crossed her mind. Her beloved Gray completely disregarding her; forgetting about her existence and eventually getting bored of her.
Her thoughts were interrupted as Erza flicked the trickling tear away and sighed. “Oh, what will I do with you.”
Juvia shifted her gaze to the scarlet-haired mage and cringed as she felt water reappearing at her cheeks. She bit her lip in an attempt to swallow her tears.
Erza gave her a soft smile and brought Juvia into her arms. “Juvia, you’re beautiful, okay? Don’t undermine yourself because of a man. If he doesn’t respond, you’ll know what kind of person he truly is. Please, trust me. Would it hurt to try?”
Juvia hastily wiped at her glistening eyes and nodded firmly. “You’re right, Erza-san. Juvia will give it a go. Even if Gray-sama doesn’t love Juvia she will always love him.”
Erza beamed. “That’s the spirit.”
•••
The guild was full of boisterous members. The room was scattered with colours of the rainbow as everyone was present. Nothing was out of the ordinary, but the only exception was Gray.
He sat at a bench and rested his chin in the palm of his hand. His narrowed eyes never left Juvia, who was busily conversing with Gajeel and Levy. The glitter in Juvia’s eyes could still be caught by Gray through the disruptive members of the guild. Despite being seated tables away, the ice mage could still hear Juvia’s faint laugh as Levy fumed at something Gajeel had said. But that didn’t matter to Gray. What mattered was they way Juvia spoke. Her lips formed a small pout occasionally and her slender hands would cover her mouth when she laughed. The attire she wore today was different. Without her trademark blue dress, her Fairy Tail mark was even more revealing. Her skirt rode up her thigh as she leaned forwards to rest a hand on Levy’s stomach. The way her wavy hair hung right above her chest made Gray swallow hard. She carefully brushed a stray lock away as she readjusted her position; her legs were now on full display. Gray tensed as he realised how many people there were in this very room. Was there this many people in the guild? More importantly—this many men?
His shoulders stiffened as he realised that the girl he was studying for the past ten minutes has barely acknowledged his existence. He quickly pushed the thought away. There was no way Juvia wouldn’t go to him... right? The ice mage rubbed his hands together, trying to ignore the sweat that started to form at his palms. He was nervous now. Why wasn’t Juvia coming over to sit with him? Was it because of the several promises he had undeliberately broken? Rage rushed over him instead. Why didn’t he do a better job at protecting her?
Before Gray could think, his feet took over. Storming over to the clueless girl, he yanked her arm away from the table. He towered over her and growled as he noticed how bewildered and upset Juvia looked. It was almost as if he was interrupting her; as if he was a hinderance.
The girl glanced at Levy and Gajeel, who both looked equally as confused. Before Juvia could open her glossy lips, Gray tore her away from her seat and clasped her hands between his, pulling her away from everyone.
Gray couldn’t bear to look back. He couldn’t understand why he was the one who was initiating their quintessential interactions today, but if that’s what it took to make her look at him, he was willing to do it for their sake no matter what.
“G-Gray-sama?”
The ice mage was so caught up in his thoughts he never realised where he was exactly headed. He haulted and his grip hardened. Juvia winced verbally. His strong grip didn’t cease to loosen. Her lips trembled as Gray refused to look at her.
“Gray-sama!”
Gray shuddered as he heard the blunette’s sudden outburst. “Where are you taking Juvia? Juvia was talking with Levy-san and Gaje-“
Gray whirled so quickly Juvia gasped in surprise as he yanked away from her touch. Her heart sank as she felt the presence of his hands disappear instantly.
Was this the end already? She never even got his confession! What about the time when-
Gray broke away her worries with a blush. His cheeks were tinted with a bright pink. Running a hand through his charcoal hair, Gray grimaced as he averted his gaze. “Listen Juvia.” He cleared his throat. “I-...” he paused before starting again. “Juvia, did I do something wrong today?”
Juvia let out a relieved sigh. She couldn’t stop a grin creeping to her lips.
“No, Gray-sama,” she giggled. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”
Gray’s eyes darkened as he took a step closer to Juvia. She braced for his hold again.
“Then why are you crying?” His voice was deep with concern and Juvia couldn’t contain all her emotions anymore. She felt so loved by this one simple question. Her hands instantly went to her face, rubbing away tears that continued to escape.
“Juvia doesn’t know either,” she sobbed. Gray rested a hand at her hip and the other flicked away a wet tear. “Yeah, but I want to know,” he whispered. His voice echoed through Juvia and she gasped for air as she weeped.
Gray’s reaction was something she always wanted to see, but why was she unsatisfied? She slapped herself mentally. The water mage was becoming more and more greedy. Her hands trembled as they rested at Gray’s cheeks. Somehow, Juvia just wanted Gray to say that he loved her.
“Juvia?”
Gray had never been so restless as he watched the girl calm herself down. He had no idea what was going on, but he knew he was full of concern. He rested his chin on her soft, sapphire hair and shut his eyes as he listened to her quiet sobs. He didn’t know what to do.
There were so many feelings Gray couldn’t seem to figure out. He was never really good with this kind of thing, especially when it came to his Juvia. Juvia Lockser. He tried out the sound of her name in a hushed whisper.
However, the only thing he knew was that whatever it was that he felt for this girl was definitely strong. It was so powerful that it was starting to become difficult to ignore now. After seaking a peak at her, he had to look away immediately. Her eyes glistened from her tears and her cheeks were wet. Her lips formed her signature pout and they looked so... tempting. Gray leaned down to rest his forehead against hers and immediately blushed. Her ample breasts rested against his chest. They looked incredibly soft but also seductive. The view he had of them was one he never experienced. Shifting his eyes away was difficult, but when he eventually did, he found himself admiring her petite nose, angular eyes and her silky hair. When was Juvia this beautiful? She was always beautiful, but at this moment, Gray could feel something burst in his chest as he realised how delicate yet strong she is.
She’s perfect.
The water mage let her eyes flutter shut. She has decided that it was, after all, her job to express her love to Gray. It has always been this way and she wouldn’t change it for a thing in the world. She wanted this immense love to fuel her everyday joys. She took a deep breath.
“There’s something I really need to get off my chest.”
“Is it your shirt?”
Juvia let out an audible gasp as Gray muttered into her neck. “I can help with that.”
Juvia blushed, too surprised to move.
“This might sound crazy but I also have something I need to say to you.”
Yes, unsatisfying ending, I know x2 ! I really wasn’t feeling great with my writing today so I want to save the special moment for another drabble !! Please bear with me. :,)

Fanfiction: Gruvia || The aftermath (part three)
Whew! Two updates in one day!! I really don’t have a social life...
“You may now kiss the bride.”
Gray’s fingers grazed his wife’s jaw, idly watching her eyelashes flutter shyly as he leaned in. Their lips locked together and the crowd cheered. Gray deepened the kiss, capturing her lips between his.
“Finally something you’ve done right!”
Gray cringed at the sound of Natsu’s boisterous voice that was accompanied with lighthearted laughter. Fairy Tail guild members occupied most of the seats, all watched eagerly as the two had exchanged vows.
The couple entwined their fingers together, both taking a moment to admire the sparkling diamond ring that sat on Juvia’s left ring finger.
“Juvia loves you, Gray-sama,” she smiled, tears rolling down her cheeks. “Oh no,” she sobbed. “Juvia’s makeup,” she laughed, revealing a set of pearl white teeth. Gray’s eyes softened at the sight of his gorgeous wife. She was accessorised with a shimmering pale blue butterfly clip that secured her cobalt hair into a loose bun. Strands of curly hair rested at her collarbone, tickling her skin. The luxurious white gown spread outwards, layered with glistening gossamer. Her veil fell below her revealed back, trailing at least a few metres behind her on the baby blue mat.
Gray matched her hairpin with a sky blue pocket square tucked into the chest pocket of his dark blue suit.
Gray raised his arm that still latched onto Juvia’s hand and lead her down the stairs. The water mage clutched onto a bouquet of blue and yellow flowers and she faced the excited crowd, hoisting the flowers before letting it fly in the air. Everyone cheered as Lucy caught it, a shy blush rising at her cheeks as Natsu stole a look at the blonde.
Gray and Juvia was now fully recovered. The disastrous day had been left behind in the back of their minds. Instead, the now wedded couple was feeling thankful for the event in the cave. Their emotions had never been so well connected.
“Mummy! Daddy!”
The two whirled to the enthusiastic shout of a curly-haired boy who wobbled into Juvia’s arms. The two year-old boy snuggled into his mother’s arms, wrapping a tiny hand around Juvia’s finger, where the ring sparkled under the sun.
“Look at you!” Juvia laughed, letting the fascinated boy curl his fingers around the diamond. “Your suit’s all crinkled.”
Gajeel rushed over, panting loudly. Hs spiky, black hair was styled into a man bun and after a lot of persuading from Juvia herself, he wore a suit that was black from head to toe. Levy followed right behind, her blue hair tied into a bun. Her knee-high black dress match Gajeel’s. “Sorry, Juvia!” Levy gasped for breath. “This little one wouldn’t keep still! He wanted to see you and Gray immediately.”
Juvia handed her son to Gray, who cradled the boy in his strong arms, rubbing his nose against his.
“Juvia doesn’t know how she’ll ever thank you, Leevy-san!” Juvia grabbed Levy’s hands in hers and smiled apologetically. “Juvia knows you’re already very busy with your twins.”
Levy shook her head, her bun shaking loosely. “No, no. Not at all. The twins love having company.”
Gajeel scowled, glaring at the tiny boy who fell asleep in Gray’s arms.
“He’s a naughty one,” he frowned. “Just like his father...”
Gray rolled his eyes. “Right.”
“But he is very handsome in that suit,” Levy giggled. Juvia instantly sighed.
“It took Juvia hours to put it on him! He wouldn’t budge.”
Natsu and Lucy made their way through the crowd and waved.
“Aww! So here’s your little boy,” Lucy gushed, rushing over to admire Gray and Juvia’s son. “He’s adorable!” she squealed, her blond curls bouncing at her shoulders.
“He sure looks like Juvia,” Natsu nodded, taking a glance at the boy. Lucy frowned. “I think he looks more like Gray.” She pointed to the sleeping boy’s hair. “Look! His hair’s dark blue.”
Gray raised an eyebrow. “My hair’s black, Einstein.”
Levy let out a laugh. “Isn’t it a mix of the two of them? Black and blue, dark blue.”
“Exactly,” Natsu snorted. “He’s leaning more to Juvia. His eyelashes and curls make it so obvious.”
Natsu and Lucy began to argue, whilst the others sighed, a smile creeping to their lips at the two.
“I think we’re gonna head back to my apartment now,” Gray murmured, beckoning to the sleeping baby in his arms. “It’s been a long day.”
Gajeel and Levy nodded in agreement as they glanced back at their twins who slept soundly in a double stroller.
After exchanging good byes, the two were escorted to a sleek, black limo where they were sent back home.
•••
Gray pouted, crossing his arms across his chest.
Juvia rested her fists against her hips. “Gray-sama, No.”
“But we just got married, Juvia,” he groaned. “I’m pretty much legally allowed to do anything to you now.”
Juvia hesitated for a moment but to Gray’s disappointment, she still stood her ground. “Gray-sama, our son’s in the other room sleeping.”
“So?”
“Gray-sama,” Juvia heaved a sigh.
Gray slinked an arm around her waist. “We’ll just have to be very, very quiet...”
Juvia giggled as he kissed her neck gently. “N-no, Gray-sama!”
“Please? Come on, it’d just be for a bit...” his eyes trailed down Juvia’s body that was only encased in a towel. Her hair still dripped with water, her were cheeks flushed from her hot shower.
“You’re really making this difficult,” he groaned. “I’ve already waited for a month.” He playfully tugged at the towel with his thumb. “Are you going to make me wait another?”
Juvia’s hands immediately clasped onto the towel, securing it around her chest.
“Gray-sama, we have to think about the consequences of...” she gulped. “Doing it when our son’s in the same apartment as us.” She turned scarlet red when Gray flashed a smirk. “No, Gray-sama. Juvia did not just agree to do it with you.”
Gray growled, his eyebrows narrowing together.
“I can’t hold myself back anymore,” he muttered, pulling his wife’s wrist harshly. He pressed her against his bare chest, his fingers lingering at the edge of the towel.
“Daddy? Mummy?”
Gray instantly took a step back as he heard his son enter the room. Juvia nervously readjusted her towel, rushing over to the boy and picked him up.
Gray grimaced when their son rested his hands right on Juvia’s breasts. His frown deepened as he realised how low it was of him to be jealous of his own son. He was desperate. He wanted to hold his wife now.
Juvia rocked their son, humming a tune to which he immediately shut his eyes to. Gray couldn’t help but smile at the view.
Maybe he’ll let it go just this one time.
