also on the topic of meaningful consequences re: character death I don't understand the take that death in fantasy requires physical permanency to matter or give a story "stakes". death is permanent regardless. Do you really think that if they get her back, they'll just go back to normal? That these characters are not forever fundamentally changed from this, that Laudna will not be fundamentally changed from this?
That Imogen's world will be less fractured, that she won't be even more of an anxious wreck now that what she stands to lose has been put into vivid clarity? That Orym won't still carry the guilt of being the chosen, that he will be less haunted by the connections he drew to his own grief with Will to Imogen's with Laudna? That Fearne won't look at Laudna and think of that coin flip, of her choice, and what that means for her and how she loves? That FCG and Ashton won't think to this and be reminded of the people they've hurt or been hurt by, and what this effort and what this grief means for how they view the hells?
That Laudna, who has been so blasé about life and if she's alive and what being alive even means for someone like her, won't wake up surrounded by family and by love and be driven to reexamine everything she's taught herself in 28 years of isolation to cope with the trauma of Whitestone? That this, maybe, will be the driving force she needed to realize that there are things she wants to live for?
It might be that I'm just biased, but I'm not sure what stakes Laudna perma-dying adds aside from just presenting the characters with the knowledge they all already have that they can, in fact, die. that what they're up against is incomprehensibly powerful and dangerous. The stakes already feel so impossibly high when you think of what and who they are preparing to face. frankly the aftermath of this combat alone, even if everything had gone perfect and everyone had gotten back up a-okay, would have set that tone.
I don't know, regardless I'll be happy to watch whatever story they choose to tell unfold as it does, but it strikes me that so many people seem to think that death only matters if there is a physical absence.

Anyway idk if anyone else has said it but the reason the Umbrellas had such a different outcome compared to the Sparrows is because Reggie gave up on them the minute he realised he couldn’t control Viktor. He needed seven to complete his plan. The Umbrella Academy was already a failure before it had even really begun.

Buck and Eddie are going to be pissed at each other/one of them is going to be pissed at the other, but not for the reasons you think.
Before anyone asks, I'm not being shady and I don't know how the season is going to unfold, but I do know that in all the years of Buck and Eddie being BuckandEddie, we've seen them survive a lawsuit (essentially: Buck at his most selfish), a kidnapping, a nervous breakdown (essentially: Eddie at his most destructive), a shooting, and so many other things that have yet to actually rock the core of their relationship. I think this—whatever this is—is going to strike at the heart of who they are together and that? That fascinates me.

as somebody who initially became a swiftie because i felt so isolated from girls my age and desperately wanted to be 'normal' by relating to their interests and still doesn't really relate to taylor swift's experience of womanhood (despite loving and valuing her art/perspective about it) i despise the current trend of generalizing one monolithic piece of art or culture to be about the entire experience of 'girlhood'

I don't know what it's like in other states, but in wisconsin it seems that nearly every law around landlord-tenant relations is purely in protection of the landlord. there needs to be actual laws in place further expanding the rights and protections of tenants. with permanent housing being a non-option for most people, it's inexcusable that landlord rights are still taken as the priority.

idk it’s just really disheartening sometimes seeing liberals and progressives champion trans rights but justify their support by citing psychiatric and medical institutions

The level of sheer incompetence the Valar show every time a dire situation occurs is infuriating!
Like...do I even need to say anything about how they handled the Míriel/Finwë/Indis situation?! By putting pressure on the DEAD PERSON who had lost both her will to live and her physical strength, to just get up and go back to producing more children for her whiny, entitled husband already?! And interrupting her recovery process every next second? And then! Instead of inventing divorce or "death doing the couple apart" or anything made Míriel stay dead forever (& never get to see her son again as far as they knew) so Finwë could remarry. And their hot offer for Míriel was "last chance. come back or your husband will marry this lady he already has in mind."
And then! They let Melkor free unsupervised and let the shit he spread among the Noldor reach the point that Fëanor drew a sword on Fingolfin, and then! When Melkor had filled Fëanor's head with how the Valar wanted his silmarils, not only did they without considering any other option at the first sign of crisis very untactfully asked for all three of his silmarils (to break them), but Tulkas straight up told him that he can't deny them cause the silmarils are actually Yavanna's and not Fëanor's.
And then! They not only did absolutely nothing to de-escalate the situation when the Noldor rebelled, and after that when they got into a fight with the Teleri, but they made the situation worse by making threats and banishing the house of Fëanor & cursing them all & whoever who followed them. So of course when there was no way back for the Fëanorians they'd try even harder to gather everyone behind them so they wouldn't have to fight Satan alone & of course, they'd oppose the Valar even worse now, and of course, they'd say "welp... we're doomed anyway. No matter what we do from this point on. Might as well do our worst."
The Valar are like 10-year-old children in charge of 5-year-old children. The moment the 5-year-olds throw a tantrum, the 10-year-olds throw an even worse tantrum.
Fëanor had already told the Noldor that the Valar were jealous tyrants, and they just confirmed it with every step they took after the rebellion.
And then they just left the Noldor and the poor race of men & dwarves who had done nothing wrong alone with Melkor in Middle-earth. The poor sailors who tried to get to Valinor to beg for help all drowned! Except for Earendil who had a Silmaril with him...but no, the Valar didn't want the Silmarils HOW DARE FEANOR PRESUME!
And they wouldn't even let the children of the Noldor who were not even born at the time of the rebellion set foot in Valinor. Even Earendil had to pay a price for stepping into Valinor. So Valar believed in collective accountability. So going by that logic, Melkor was a Vala. MELKOR WAS MANWE'S BROTHER! And everything that happened in Middle-earth, and even before that, Everything that happened to Fëanor & the house of Finwë that kickstarted the rebellion was Melkor's fault. Then why were the Valar not taking responsibility for the family member THEY antagonized & THEY couldn't control & THEY left unsupervised?
(and then they offered pardon to Sauron and Melkor, but Feanor got sentenced to staying in the halls of Mandos forever.)
Maedhros didn't burn the ships but still, he was the one who took responsibility for his family's actions and apologized and paid the ransom, and abdicated for it. Fingolfin had lost a son & a daughter-in-law & lots of followers for Fëanor's stunt with the ships but he still forgave the Fëanorians. Here we have a bunch of hot-headed, traumatized, grieving +3000-year-olds acting more mature & responsible & competent & gracious than gods who have been around forever.
And then! The fucking Numenor thing! They caged those poor people on an island, put boundaries on how far they could travel so they wouldn't get tempted when they saw the immortal lands and when the Numenorians rioted they had the guts to send representatives to convince them that actually, being mortal is very good. It's a gift. All the while still not letting them in the immortal lands. And when their mismanagement resulted in the Numenorians finally rioting, Manwe asked Eru for help & Eru... you know... did a genocide & changed the whole world's structure. (He was so quick to answer Manwe's prayer and demolish anyone who criticized him that makes one wonder where was he when Melkor was eating everyone?)
They just HAND situations to Melkor & Sauron. Honestly, Sauron & Melkor would have been idiots not to use these perfect situations handed to them on a silver platter.
I don't think the Valar's hearts are in a wrong place but they're so fucking incompetent! They look like some dysfunctional rich brats with no experience who have to manage their negligent father's company after he's fucked off.

it's almost 2023 and I just want to get a little bit sappy here for a moment.
2022 was a big year for me for a lot of reasons. some great, some not so great, and the theme of the year was reconnecting with pieces of myself that ended up scattered after several years that were unkind, at best.
when I watched the new season of Stranger Things this summer, covid-ridden and miserable, I did not expect for that to change my life. no hyperbole. joining this fandom and meeting all of you has changed my life. when we find a new community that gets us, that lets us be ourselves and explore creative bits that have been buried away for years, that leaves a mark. and you all have.
I stopped writing seven years ago when I was in a situation that required me to drop things that caused conflict. unfortunately, writing was one of them. and even after getting out of that situation and now being years into the healthiest place I've been in life, writing stayed on the back-burner. it'd been buried so deep, that something needed to truly rock me to remind that oh! I can do things simply because I enjoy them again! (and then Eddie Munson entered the chat, lmao.) every comment, every kudos, every message, every reply- I cannot tell you all how much they mean to me.
and now here I am! I've written more in this year between published and yet-to-be-published works than I could've dreamed of at the start of this year. I've made friends that have breached fandom-exclusive containment. I joke a lot, but I feel so truly lucky to have somehow found myself dragged by the ankles back onto tumblr and back into the fanfiction sphere. fanfiction is such a gift and I just adore all of you!
I'm so excited to see what new words and new magic we collectively create in the coming year!
tagging some mutuals here that I love so much, but please know that I'd tag my entire following list if I could!

Is there a list out there of what I like to call mixed/main events? Like how Resounding Twilight Parade is considered a Leo/need event despite being mixed, same thing with Exciting Picnic being a N25 event.
Leo/need currently has the most key story mixed events, with 3. Those being Resounding Twilight Parade (which develops the plot with STANDOUT that was started in Honami's event prior), Singing With You In A World Where Sakura Dance (which develops Ichika's side of that plot leading up to Resonate With You), and In the Corner of A Resonant Town (which covers Shiho's feelings before L/n's one-man show in Get Over It.).
MORE MORE JUMP! has none, but have had some in the past. Beyond Prayers, the Tomorrow We Wish For (where MMJ volunteer as shrine maidens featuring a brief segment covering some of Haruka's past) and Operation♡Secret Valentine! (where Airi helps Saki and Emu make Valentine's treats) were marked as key stories for a few months before having their tags removed, while the recent Airi-centric event, Slapstick cafe ●REC!! (which is about MMJ filming a TV spot at a local cafe), had its tag removed after a few weeks because apparently it was added by mistake. Honestly none of them contribute a huge amount to MMJ's overall plot so removing them is fair. Slapstick cafe probably is most plot relevant despite being the one that was marked as key story by mistake, but the tag being removed probably means it's not very important.
Vivid BAD SQUAD only has one: Ringing Sounds at the Summer Festival. This wasn't marked as a key story until long after it was released, and EN still hasn't received the update which adds the tag. The reason it was retroactively tagged is probably due to covering parts of Akito's backstory, specifically how he got into music, that aren't covered in a unit event.
WonderlandsxShowtime also has one: A Brand New Year! Lion Dance Robot's New Year's Show!. Tsukasa decides to take up acting opportunities outside PXL/WxS at the end of the event, which leads directly into Amidst a Dream, Towards the Shining Stars.
25-Ji, Nightcord de. has 2 mixed event key stories currently, those being Tell Me Your Problems! Exciting Picnic and At This Festival Colored By Twilight. The first one carries on from the end of Secret Distance, developing Mizuki and Ena's relationship before My Footprints, Your Destination, and the latter is where Mafuyu starts to rediscover more of her real self when she gets put on first aid duty at Shibuya festival, which is brought up in later events. Intersecting Melodies, Glowing Warmth used to be tagged as key story, but it was later removed, probably because it was more important to Mafuyu's individual character arc than it was to N25 collectively.

for me was always weird bc csapnap was on csbi's side? like yes for a time was with cdream but he helped ctommy to get the disks back and after cgeorge was no longer a king both he and cgnf were on their side agaist cdream and manberg like even if they take a step back for el rapis and on moment when he was ctommy's enemy was in the tower battle where he fought with ctechno and cdream on his side so ???? if it was cdream vs csbi i get it more but csapnap and cgeorge weren't csbi enemies or at least for very short time they were
neither were c!sbi even on c!sbi's side lmao like c!sbi as a unit doesn't exactly exist in the lore. c!sapnap's alliances with c!dream and c!tommy both were often tenuous and self-interested loooong before stuff with the spirit speech and exile--and c!sapnap and c!george worked with quackity and karl for the mexican lmanburg debates, but were largely uninvolved with NLM (save for c!sapnap fighting in doomsday). like, the dsmp has scarcely ever worked in terms of "two defined sides with no overlap" (like, the closest you're gonna get is probably the revolution and ONLY the revolution, conflicts were hardly that simple before the revolution either) and c!sapnap in particular has always been on the chaotic side while c!george was more known for a relative degree of disinterest (see: his not being involved in either nov 16th or doomsday). and in terms of c!sbi, i mean, a lot of what c!wilbur does throughout the story kinda goes pretty damn directly against c!techno's ideals (hence why techno was rather explicitly kept in the dark for a lot of pogtopia) and c!tommy and c!techno obviously had their split as well. c!george dislikes c!tommy while c!sapnap on the whole is friendly with him (but it's c!sapnap so of course he's gonna do shit like harass shroud lmao, mans was known as the pet killer for a Reason and the pet wars had a lot of sapnap and tommy being on opposing sides bc of each other), c!george has his "your technoblade" jealousy moment and iirc c!sapnap was nawt fond of c!techno either? i forget specifics abt that particular relationship tho. c!sapnap and c!george were never really on c!wilbur's side in any conflict...as opposed to c!dream, who was. and so on and so forth
