Trust Is Earned - Charles Vane - 1
For someone who is taking a break from writing, I sure wrote a lot in a short time frame.
This is a 34.4k word fic broken into 10 parts. It is what I consider to be a “fuck canon” kinda fic so there’s that to enjoy.
Warning: Slow burn. I’m sorry.
*gif not mine*
Enjoy!

*****
One of the largest draws of Nassau was the freedom. There was still poverty and strife, people who fought every day to survive, but the freedom was something that couldn’t be ignored. Women free of societal views that required them to be the property of either their father or their husband. Men free of the shackles of polite society, free to sail the seas and create chaos.
Freedom did come with a price though. The pirates ruled the seas and demanded respect with a fist of violence, but that was nothing compared to the rule of the Guthries. They ruled the island with their commerce, able to make and break not only the pirate crews but also the merchants on the island.
For you, freedom was many things. Your store, though small and off the beaten track, was lucrative and gave to you a life of comfort if not leisure. Your parents were gone but their love still resided in you. They had left behind a gaggle of friends that loved and protected you as you asserted your independence.
Freedom was also the choice of who you took to bed. There had been a few men over the years, but none you considered special. The closest to a meaningful relationship you got was the continued dalliance with one of the pirates from The Walrus, the boatswain Billy Bones.
The sex was more than enough to please you, but the man was simply easy to spend time with. The two of you laughed and talked about a myriad of things. He was a learned man and the two of you had plenty in common.
It wasn’t love though. That was one thing you weren’t sure you would find in Nassau, but that didn’t stop you from hoping.
You wanted connection, intimacy, passion. You wanted a commitment, a love that consumed and freed you. As much as you enjoyed Billy’s presence, he wasn’t that for you.
If you never had a love like your parents had, at least you had your store. Affectionately called the General, it was a place where most of the people on the island started their search for things. If you didn’t carry it, you had the means to find it for them. For a price, of course.
Plus you made the best candles on the island. You were sure that not one ship left the bay without candles from the General.
The life you had in Nassau was a good one, a comfortable one. If only you’d known that that was all about to change.
------
There was a man and women in the store, both of them speaking low as they looked over the shelves against the far wall. Normally you wouldn’t have paid them any mind, but you had seen the look on their faces when they first walked in.
Good things rarely followed Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny when they looked like that.
You focused on the pages in hand, orders from various people on the island. You needed to find more mouse traps for the madam of the brothel, Mrs. Mapleton. One of the cooks from one of the ships needed better utensils. The butcher needed—
“Y/N. We have our order ready.”
You put the papers down and held a hand out to accept the piece of paper that was in Rackham’s hand. He held onto it for a long beat while staring at you before he released it. He turned his body towards Anne who was purposefully cleaning her nails with a long knife from her boot.
“Let’s see what I can do for you,” you said as you looked over the order. “Most of this is here in the store, but there are a few items I’ll need to get for you.”
As you gathered the items that you had on hand, you tried to ignore the two of them. Candles of various sizes, an inkwell with an extra pot of ink, a few quills, a thing of chalk, charcoal, paper…
Every item you grabbed from your shelves or cabinets and placed into the canvas bag for the two of them, some wrapped to keep from being damaged. Some butcher paper was packed into the bag for extra security.
As you went about marking the items you still needed to get for them, you noticed that they had approached you once more.
“Is there something else I can help you with Mr. Rackham?” you asked in a polite voice as you scribbled a few notes regarding price, adding up how much you’d need to charge The Ranger crew.
“Oh, nothing in particular. Although now that you mention it,” he said as he tapped his fingers on the counter that separated the two of you, “I believe I heard through the grapevine that you were together with the boatswain of The Walrus.”
“Is that what you’ve heard? How intriguing.” You tore off the half of the page with the amount due and handed it over. “Here’s what’s owed. As always you just pay for what’s being taken today..”
He narrowed his eyes at you before he accepted the paper. You watched as he handed it to Anne Bonny who tugged out a pouch with some coin in it.
“Should I take you avoiding the question as an affirmative?”
You glanced away from Anne and back over to Jack at that. As you were one of the best stores in Nassau and The Ranger was one of the biggest crews, definitely one of the best crews, you had dealt with the quartermaster and his quiet companion often enough. In your time dealing with them, however, you’d never been interrogated before. Your conversations were usually limited to the sale and maybe some idle chit chat.
This was a change you weren’t sure you appreciated.
“There wasn’t a question posed to me. You simply reiterated something that had been observed. However if it had been a question,” you amended because you didn’t want to piss these two off, “I would tell you that no, we’re not together. We simply enjoy each other’s company.”
“Is that right?” He cast a glance at Anne and gave an almost imperceptible nod.
The woman handed over the correct amount of coin as well as a tip which wasn’t required but definitely helped. You thanked them both as you pushed the bag towards them.
With the bundle in his arms, the two left your store without another word. You weighed the coin in hand before you put it in the hidden compartment where you stored the rest.
It was a strange interaction with the pirate pair, but you shook it off. There were more important things to focus on. Like a stack of orders you needed to work on.
------
With the door to the store locked, you headed to the hidden door that led to your rooms. It was made to look like part of the wall so no one knew where it was. You had just touched the handle when what sounded like an entire army began banging on the door to the shop.
At this hour it probably wasn’t an irate shopper or townsfolk. This had to be an emergency. That in mind, you made your way over to the door and pressed your ear to it.
“Y/N? Open the door. It’s me, Billy.”
This was highly unusual, but it was Billy. You trusted him.
You undid the locks and lifted the wooden slat that barred the door. Then you quickly opened it. Billy rushed in with someone behind him, a shorter man with curly black hair. He gave a charming smile that seemed at odds with the look of concern on Billy’s face.
The two of them shut and locked the door and then went about herding you towards the back room. Billy then opened the hidden door that led to your rooms, earning an interesting look from the other man.
“Do I want to know what’s going on? Or who this is?”
The man turned to offer you his hand, that charming smile back on his lips.
“I’m John Silver, a newly acquired… cook on The Walrus.”
You looked between John Silver and Billy who kept shooting glances at the door that led to the shop as if it was going to blow open at any second.
“I don’t have any cookbooks on hand if that’s your reason for coming by after I’ve already closed up shop, but I can find some. Other than that, I think I better demand an explanation.”
Billy came forward, his hands raised as if he was trying to calm down an enraged wild animal.
“It’s not as bad as it seems,” he began, flinching when you crossed your arms over your chest. “The Ranger crew was getting ready to set sail and uh, it seems they aren’t able to at the moment. Things got a little heated on the beach and we thought it’d be a good idea to find somewhere to lie low until the heat died down.”
You let that sit for a moment as you looked between the two of them. Besides the fact that John Silver didn’t look like he’d spent a second cooking in his life, Billy looked much like he had the first time you’d caught him with one of the whores in the brothel.
You explained that you didn’t mind, preferred it really. While you cared for Billy, you knew that you’d never fall in love with him. You didn’t particularly want to fall in love with a pirate. Since then both of you were comfortable enough to find companionship where it came without guilt.
It worked for the two of you. But that first time he’d looked so guilty.
Just as he did now.
“Bullshit. Now I’ll say this again just in case you didn’t hear me the first time. I demand a fucking explanation.”
Billy winced again.
“Y/N–” but you didn’t let him get out whatever pitiful excuse he had prepared.
“You’re a pirate, Billy Bones, and I’ve never known you to run from a fight. If things were heated on the beach, you wouldn’t be up here hiding. You’d be down there with a sword in hand and your brothers at your back. So whatever is going on, I want to know right now, or you and your cook can go fuck yourselves and leave.”
You watched as Silver opened his mouth, obviously about to tell Billy that they should leave, but you knew that that wouldn’t be happening. Billy had brought the two of them to you for a reason. He might be stubborn—he was a pirate after all—but he was far from stupid.
And he knew that you were right.
“It’s a map,” he said over Silver’s objections, “a map that they had that leads to some potentially big prizes. Silver stole it.”
You pinched the bridge of your nose before you looked at the other man.
“You stole… a treasure map… from a pirate? Not just any pirate, but Captain Vane?” You let out a little laugh and then looked over at Billy. “Where did you find this one? The bottom of the ocean?”
“I think you’re missing the point,” Silver tried to explain as a way to divert attention from his folly. “I am currently in possession of something that The Ranger crew desperately want to get back. My plan is to… give it to Captain Flint but he’s not here. Therefore we’re not as protected as I originally thought we’d be.”
The way he said that he was going to give the map to Flint made you think that had originally not been his plan. If the map was for some large prizes, it was likely he had originally meant to sell it to the highest bidder.
Maybe he was a pirate after all.
“And so you thought to bring him to me. Did you think I could hide him under the pit where I make the candles?”
“We just need to keep our heads down until Flint is back from the interior. It should be tomorrow sometime.”
As you started to say that they could stay there, you remembered something from earlier that morning. At the time Jack Rackham’s questions had seemed harmless if a little strange. Now you had to wonder if there had been a reason to them after all.
“I’m not sure that’s a good idea. This morning I had some of The Ranger crew in here for an order. An order that came with the extra benefit of questions regarding my relationship with the boatswain of The Walrus.”
While Billy usually tried to be civil and polite around you, he didn’t seem to have that issue just then.
“Fuck. Fucking… fuck.”
“Eloquent,” Silver remarked and then nodded when Billy gave him a glare. “I know that this is my fault, but I think you’re forgetting how important this map could be. And that Captain Vane and the rest of The Ranger crew would gladly cut off our heads to get it back.”
You rubbed your temples, urging back the headache that started to grow there. The day had started with such promise and had only gone downhill.
“There’s a door in the back that leads to the woods. If you walk about ten minutes you’ll come to a split where you can either go back to town or to the interior. You’ll need to find a different place to hide.”
Silver shook his head.
“The door to this part of the building was hidden. We could stay here.”
You fixed Silver with a glare that made him step back.
“This store is my livelihood. If the pirates even suspect that you might be here, they’ll tear this building down to the very last nail. I won’t have that happen over your stupid decision, do you understand me? If you are in this building when The Ranger crew gets here, I’ll happily direct them to the very crevice you’ve hidden yourself in.”
You turned to Billy, still fuming over the turn of events.
“I’m sorry Billy. You know in other circumstances I’d do anything to help you, but this isn’t something I’m willing to risk. Not for you, not for some man I’ve never met. I can’t be part of that.”
Billy nodded that he understood. He stepped forward and placed a hand on your shoulder to calm you down.
“I wouldn’t ask you to do that. We’ll take the passage out and head back to the beach. If the crew comes, just tell them we were headed to the interior to look for a Mr. Blackwell. That’ll get them off your case.”
You peered up at him cautiously.
“Is there a Mr. Blackwell in the interior?” You didn’t want to send a bunch of angry pirates after an innocent man.
“Not that I’m aware of,” he admitted with a grin.
He leaned in to kiss your forehead. When he pulled back, he grabbed Silver’s shoulder and yanked him in the direction of the back door you had told him about.
Once the door was shut and you were left alone once more, you took a deep breath. If the questioning was due to the map, you wanted to be prepared. If Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny came back to your store, you were going to be prepared for them.
After this, Billy would have a lot to make up for.
------
The sun had barely started to rise in the sky when the pounding began. You looked up from where you had been preparing tea. It sounded like the door of the shop was going to cave in any moment and you wouldn’t stand for that. You slipped into the shop and shut the hidden door quietly. You made sure everything was in position before you went to the door to let in whoever was out there.
It turned out to be Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny, as you had assumed, but they weren’t alone. In front of them was a man you’d never formally been introduced to, but everyone in Nassau knew who Captain Charles Vane was.
And as he stormed past you and into the shop, you were impressed that for once the stories seemed to be true. He was silent as he directed the other two to start to search your shop, a passiveness on his face that you were sure was faked.
As the other two pirates made their way around the shop, you simply folded your arms over your chest.
“Are you going to tell me what this is about or am I to guess?”
The captain didn’t even glance in your direction but Rackham did.
“Surely you don’t think playing dumb will help you. You admitted to me that you were close to Billy Bones, he stole something from our crew, ergo…” With that he ducked into the backroom to search for Billy, a sword drawn.
“Billy Bones is twelve feet tall, where do you think I’ve hidden him? He wouldn’t exactly fit in the cabinet.”
This time it was Bonny that spoke.
“You live here, don’t ya? Maybe you have him stashed in your bed.”
You rolled your eyes.
“I won’t qualify that with a response.” You looked past the redhead and over at the captain who was still ignoring your presence. Or pretending to at least. “If Billy had come by here, what makes you think I would’ve let him stay?”
“You’d turn away someone you’re bedding in their time of need?” That was called to you from your own backroom. Jack’s voice was muffled, but still clear enough to be heard.
“If I sheltered every man that I’ve fucked when he’s pissed off some pirate crew or other, I’d be running a halfway house. This is my place of business and as I am supposed to be a neutral entity, yes, I would’ve turned him away.”
That drew the captain’s attention. He stared at you for a long moment before he spoke.
“Jack.” It was just one word but the tone made you stand up a little straighter.
That wasn’t him calling Jack back into the room. That was him letting Jack off the leash.
Suddenly a loud crash came from the backroom. It was followed by more. It took only seconds to realize what was happening.
He was destroying your merchandise.
“You fucking bastard,” you yelled as you tried to launch yourself in that direction but an arm around your middle stilled you.
Out of the corner of your eye you could see the brown hair that hung nearby telling you that the culprit was the captain rather than Bonny. You had half a mind to try to land a fist in his face but you figured they wouldn’t be inclined to let you go if you did that.
“Billy, the cook, and my map. Tell us where they are and this stops.”
Now it was Bonny’s turn to start wrecking your shop. While Rackham wreaked havoc on your backroom, Bonny tore reams of paper and broke quills.
“Make them stop and I’ll tell you, but damaging my store won’t exactly make me inclined to tell you the truth otherwise.”
The arm around your middle squeezed as if in warning before he barked out an order for the two of them to stop. You waited for Rackham to join the rest of you before you tried to pull away from the captain. He didn’t seem inclined to let you go just yet so you stopped fighting it and just slumped a bit.
“There’s a path around the back of the shop. Ten minute walk and you’ll see a sign that points towards the interior. They said they were going to a Mr. Blackwell for help.” You said the name as if you were remembering it rather than just relaying it in hopes that it would help your act. “They left just after dark last night so you might want to hurry.”
A knife was swung out and pointed at your throat, courtesy of Anne Bonny. She pressed it tight enough that it probably drew blood.
“Why should we trust you? You could be lying to us.”
Of course you were but you weren’t about to tell her that.
“What part of neutral entity do you not understand? I sell to everyone on this island so having favorites wouldn’t get me anywhere, would it?”
You finally were able to pull out of the captain’s grasp. You marched towards the backroom and scowled at the mess. Then you went around to your counter where you pretended to look over the damage that Bonny had caused.
“If you are lying to us, we’ll be back,” the captain promised in a deep voice that told you this would just be the beginning.
You shrugged a shoulder as you grabbed the pistol you’d left under the counter. You raised it level at the three of them. You might only have one shot, but you’d make it count. Rackham reached for his sword but Vane shook his head and stopped him.
“I’ve given you the information you need, now get the fuck out of my shop so that I can try to repair the damage that’s been done.”
Vane jerked his head towards the front door that they had stormed through. As the three of them slipped out into the morning air, aimed for the back of the store so that they could try to hunt down Billy and Silver, you watched as Vane looked over his shoulder at you for a long moment before he shut the door behind him.
Once you were sure that the three of them had gone, you slumped against the wall and put the pistol on a shelf.
“Really hope that map is worth it Billy,” you mumbled to yourself.
Then you went about fixing your shop.

Work vs. Mental Health
aka KNOWING YOUR RIGHTS FROM YOUR WRONGS
We’re passionate about promoting positive mental health here at CubeSquared, but we know not everyone is, so we wanted to put something together to help those (especially given the impact of the coronavirus) who may be looking for work with a mental health condition in tow.
Confucius once said "find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life". Well that's all well and good for him and his corner office, but what about the rest of us? What about the rest of us just trying to get through the day without punching that buffoon from Sales or from getting caught nicking all those pens? Exactly.
If those work-based annoyances aren't enough, if you're living with a mental health condition, then work can be so much tougher. For some, just getting out of bed is a Herculean task, let alone coping with additional deadlines, a huge workload or trying to create a PowerPoint slideshow that won't send everyone into a coma.
Just like life, work colleagues and management will have different viewpoints when it comes to mental illness. Some will be accommodating of your needs, others won't and it will be a source of contempt. Screw those guys!
With these different points of view, how helpful employers are will vary wildly, so it's important to know what your actual rights are. Can you punch that idiot from Sales? Probably not, but where DO you stand? If you're in the UK (like we are), we can try and help, so let's take a look at another of our world-famous* Top 10 lists! Let's bloody do this!
(* - not actually world-famous)
1. BEFORE YOU START WORK
Let's start before you actually have a job! What do you mean that's cheating? Oh you sound just like that douchebag from Sales!
If you're in the position of looking for work, let's face it, you're not alone in that, it's important to know where you stand as you sit down for the interview. See what we did there? Let's say, for the sake of argument, you have depression. What next?
Any prospective employer can NOT ask you about your mental health, unless they are:
Asking about any reasonable adjustments they need to make during the job application process.
Checking they have applications from a wide range of people; this might also include sex (as in gender, it's not a 'Yes Please' / 'No Thank You' thing), religion, sexuality, race, etc.
Ensuring that you will actually be able to do the job you're applying for.
2. TO DISCLOSE OR NOT TO DISCLOSE. THAT IS THE QUESTION.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with being open about any condition you might have, it's just that you don't HAVE to. If you want to be open and tell them, feel free. The question you might want to consider though is whether to tell them before or after you get the job. If you don't get it, then I wouldn't bother!
If you DO disclose, then you will be protected under the Equality Act 2010. This means you can get any extra support you might need at work, ask for any reasonable adjustments to be made and, hopefully, get support from your lovely new work mates. Depending on the environment, that might work against you (if they're a bunch of A-holes), so it will be your choice. Just remember, you're not legally obligated to do so.
The key words here are 'reasonable adjustments' If you want them to build you a solid gold throne to sit on, then you're probably not going to get that, but if you need to sit in a particular part of the office, for example, or building in some 'work from home' hours, then you can certainly ask. It boils down to whether you would be at a 'significant disadvantage' without it.
It's not as onerous at it sounds. Employers don't necessarily have to foot the bill for any changes. They can get help through the Access to Work scheme, which can help to pay for practical support their employees might need to help start or stay in work. Also, if the company has an Occupational Health department, then they may be able to help with this.
It might also be worth noting that when looking for a company clever enough to hire you, you might want to look for firms that display the 'Disability Confident' symbol. Like ours in the footer of every page (just scroll down, we’re not lying, in fact we’re very proud of it!)
It was launched by the UK Government and was designed to encourage firms to recruit disabled people (this includes depression by the way). It does mean that they are more suited to hiring (and keeping) people classed as ‘disabled’.
 3. THE EQUALITY ACT.
Whilst we're on the subject of the Equality Act, nice segue I know, let's touch on that piece of legislation a little. It classes depression as a disability, so is covered by this piece of legislation. The Act also covers things like bipolar disorder, dementia, OCD and schizophrenia, in fact anything that is a "substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities".
Because of this, employers can't (or shouldn't at least) discriminate against you when you apply for jobs, have a job or if you lose it through redundancy.
4. BENEFIT BITS
If you're starting work after being on benefits for a while, then it can be a financial tricky path to navigate. The time between getting your last benefit and your first bumper pay day can seem like a lifetime.
You may also be able to get benefits AND work, depending on how many hours you work. This applies if you've been on either Employment Support Allowance or Jobseekers Allowance.
 5. SICK PAY
You've got your dream job (hopefully it won't be a nightmare) and things are going tickety-boo, but then you have a bit of a turn for the worst. Now what?
If you need to take time off for your physical or mental health, then there also things you need to be aware of.
How much time you can take off ill, and how much you'll get (or for how long) will vary from employer to employer and their own policies. It might also be dependant on how long you've worked there, so giving a definitive answer here is a little harder.
Most will give you full pay for a short while, before reducing it to half-pay. When that happens, or stops completely, providing you have been off work for more than 4 days, then you can apply for SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) for up to 28 weeks. Then 28 weeks later? The zombies come ;-)
6. WORK....UNTIL YOU CAN'T
If you're off for more than 4 weeks, then your employer can refer you to Fit for Work.
This is a UK government-funded initiative which offers advice on returning to work. They can also refer you to a Occupational Health professional (if your company doesn't have one) who will work with you to create a 'return to work' plan. So that’s nice.
7. I'M BACK BABY!
Depending on how long you've been off for, even if it's only a short time, going back to work can be tough. Not knowing the reaction you'll get from colleagues when you return or even if it's just FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), then it can be an anxious time.
You can help to ease that by keeping in touch with your manager while you're off. This will mean that going back to work can be a little less daunting. You don't have to be 'cured' to go back to work, as long as you can go back without making yourself worse or you don't feel under any pressure to go back, you should be fine.
You may need a  ‘fit note’ from the GP and, if you do, you can ask them to recommend adjustments on the form for your employer to see, e.g. reduced hours at first, etc.
8. I'M NOT BACK BABY!
If your short-term mental (or even physical) illness becomes a long-term problem, then your employer can eventually decide to 'let you go', providing there are no reasonable adjustments they can make to keep you there.
This isn't a decision they'll take lightly, but remember that they're trying to run a business and can't keep your job open forever. They won't want to lose a good worker, so try and look at objectively before firing off any strongly worded emails in the middle of the night after one-too-many bottles of wine.
9. MAKE A COMPLAINT
We'd like to think that all employers are honourable and trustworthy (like us), but sadly that isn't the case. Whatever your circumstances and whatever kind of employer they are, they do have to adhere to the law.
If you've lost your job, but you feel like they haven't done this lawfully and you have been unfairly discriminated against, then you can make a complaint. There may be an opportunity to do this informally at first, just in case there has been a misunderstanding or miscommunication that can be easily resolved. If not, then it's time to kick on!
The company will have their own procedure for formal complaints, so speak to their HR or Personnel Department (or the Office Manager if they're only a small firm) and find out what the procedure is. It might be worth getting in writing if you can. If this doesn't help, then you can take it to an Employment Tribunal.
10. MORE INFORMATION.
Obviously there are a multitude of people reading this and any number of individual circumstances to consider. We don't have ALL the answers, as shocking as that might be.
If you need any further help with work, then there are a number of organisations that specialise in this kind of thing. Citizen's Advice (they're not a Bureau anymore apparently) are a great place to start, but also an organisation called Benefits and Work have some excellent resources and an active forum where you can ask questions and (hopefully) get some answers.
If you're going through something, then probably someone else already has, so it can be a useful weapon to have in your arsenal.
We hope you find some useful hints and tips here, but these are just ours. If you've got any more to share, then please let people know in the comments section below. We're off to punch that pillock in Sales ;-)

SHIP. ELISE AND REEVES.
uncamaleon said:
The whole shebang for the otp meme for Reeves 😘
[ MUN. This is my not surprised face :P ]
ALSO. Random note about Elise I realized I need to say after completing this and realizing she seems extremely shy and like she is a homebody which is weird for someone working in house sales; she’s not. Elise is great at her job. She can smooze and compliment people into buying a house and make that sale with the best of them. Be glad she isn’t in a competitive field. She’d hand you your ass. But in her personal life she is a bit more quiet and reserved. She can get really shy in a relationship because it is so deeply personal and it is hard for her to open up. ( She is very scared about getting hurt. ) Random people are easy for her. She can be polite to that poor lost guy trying to find the closest supermarket or the old lady that doesn’t know where something is in the book store. If it is people connected to an important relationship though she can get a bit shy. Like meeting someone’s family or best friends. Her high school reunion. It takes you back there. And with a developing relationship it takes her a bit to relax fully.
OTP Ask Meme
1. Who wakes up first?
Elise. She has a lot of early morning appointments for work. Also she is currently the only one of them that has an actual 9-5 style job. The only times Reeves beats her might be on weekends or if he never did fully get to sleep.
2. Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
Both. But Reeves is normally the one found trying [ and able ] to talk Elise into it. Though she is a pretty good persuader too ;)
3. Who takes longer getting ready?
They are both pretty equal. Reeves has his rock god musician look to uphold and Elise has her fashionable looks. It would probably end up being Elise. Because women’s clothing are not made to go on easily. And women are expected to do so much more to look presentable.
4. When they can’t sleep, what do they do?
Reeves goes into another room and works on music normally. ( Sometimes he might just watch Elise sleep for a bit. )
Elise slips out of the bedroom to watch tv quietly maybe on her ipad or on the tv so she doesn’t risk waking him up. Occasionally she’ll read that book she’s been trying to get through. ( With work and life she doesn’t get a lot of down time to actually be able to dedicate attention to a good book fully. She doesn’t read a lot at night because she doesn’t want to fall asleep and miss something important. )
If we’re talking the both of them, they normally will just lay there and talk quietly until one of them drifts off, fingers brushing patterns on each other’s skin and carding through each other’s hair.
5. Who falls asleep while watching a movie?
It kind of depends. They alternate depending on the day of the week. Either way whoever stays up longer covers the other with a blanket and cuddles up to join them or if the movie is over they’ll gently wake the other to help them walk ( or carry ) them into the bedroom. There are a lot of couch cuddles. These two are bad at sleep.
6. Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile?
Reeves likes to claim he does more but Elise often goes in and out of sleep so she’ll wake back up and then spend the next little while just watching him and thinking how lucky she is that he wanted her.  They both do it though. The romantic saps.
7. Who comes up with the cheesy pick-up lines?
Reeves. He likes to use them to make Elise laugh.
8. Who gets extremely competitive playing Mario Kart?
Reeves. Elise doesn’t really play. She’s bad at controller games. She didn’t have a gaming system other than a Gameboy growing up.
9. Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling?
Reeves. He’s often on the phone with his agent or busily replying to an email or text and he gets distracted. Elise laughs at him when he does it. ( Before of course making sure he’s alright and kissing his forehead or nose where he smacked it. )
10. Who sets the other’s ringtone to something loud and obnoxious behind their back
Elise likes to set his ringtone to one of his own songs for amusement.
11. Who rearranges the bookshelf/DVD shelf in alphabetical order?
Elise. It’s one of her coping mechanism. If she’s anxious she’ll go on a cleaning spree and reorganize the apartment/house.
12. Who does the hands-over-the-eyes “Guess Who” thing?
Reeves. Because he is adorable.
13. Who points out a dog when they see one?
Both. They love animals. Don’t get them started on the animals they got to play with when on vacation in Australia....
14. Who’s prone to road rage?
Elise. She’s good about it but it is definitely there. She doesn’t scream but there are some very colorful words dripping out of her mouth under her breath. Reeves doesn’t drive all that much and is pretty relaxed anyways.
15. Who’s prone to wearing socks indoor (or to sleep)?
Elise does love a good set of comfy fluffy socks. Especially on rainy days. If it is cold she’ll wear them instead of slippers but normally she’ll take them off to sleep. A lot of times at night Elise runs hot so if she leaves them on she’ll get a little too toasty.
16. Who reminds the other to put on sunscreen before going to the beach (or pool)?
Elise. She doesn’t forget to put it on because she has been pretty pale her whole life and burns very easily. There is not going to be a repeat of that summer after 6th grade...
17. Who carries all the important documents while traveling?
Reeves. He has actual pockets unlike most of female clothing. :/ They are both good at staying organized though. Two heads are always checking off docs when they travel.
18. Who gets the window seat?
Elise. She doesn’t get to travel quite as much as he does so it is an adventure. Also, this way Elise doesn’t have to deal with a stranger next to her. Reeves is more of a people person in all situations.
19. Who puts their cold hands/feet on the other?
Reeves. Elise if she does it is completely by accident. Reeves loves to get a squeaked reaction out of Elise and laughs. Though she does like his cold hands. Feet though. Not her favorite.
20. What do they argue about the most?
Though Reeves never really shows it, he is human and does get tired and frustrated at times. It bothers him that Elise hides in herself so much. That she doesn’t really show her actual self at all. I mean look at her apartment. It looks more like a show home when he starts seeing her than like she lives there.
Sometimes it feels like she doesn’t even really know herself. There are times when she just hides from him and he is just so frustrated that she won’t just be herself. And when they start dating it is something that she becomes aware of. She’s just so used to being disconnected to a certain extent. And it drives him crazy. He wants to know this woman he has been thinking about for a decade. This woman that he spent years going to school with and fell in love with her little quirks. He got to see a little bit of her at the reunion but at times it feels like he hasn’t learned much more than that night. He wants to know her likes and dislikes. He wants to know what makes her laugh and what makes her cry. And a lot of times she’ll just be neutral about something and it isn’t really even on a conscious level most of the time.
So it is frustrating. But.
They have made a rule never to go to bed angry. And always kiss each other goodnight.
And she really is working on it. Slowly but surly she is getting to know herself better along with Reeves. She has also been bad about doing things for herself before they were together. Most of the time she just lived for work and didn’t do much for herself.
21. Who’s clumsier?
Reeves. Thankfully never with his guitar.
22. Who texts more often?
Reeves. He sends little messages at random to let Elise know he is thinking of her; especially when he is out of town. She does too sometimes but she’s often on her actual phone for work or else has her phone on silent if she is with clients.
23. Who is better with kids?
More often Reeves since he is around his friends kids a little more now that he comes back to visit to see Elise. Kids tend to like both of them though. Elise is just fine holding a baby while people are busy. Her pretty calm energy ( when not surrounded by strangers or forced into the center of attention ) radiates with them. She’s good with calming crying babies. Reeves is the good one at keeping them entertained. They do well as a team.
She has been known to entertain a baby while parents go to explore a room more during a house showing.
24. Who’s the better cook?
Reeves. His food has more flavor. Elise likes flavor and hates the boring recipes from her childhood. There are not many recipes saved from her side of the family. They both like to pick up interesting spices they find at random to experiment with. They both like spicy food.
25. Who mistakes salt for sugar?
Reeves early in the morning for his coffee. He isn’t awake, okay? Stop laughing at him.
26. Who puts the fork in the microwave?
Thankfully no one has forgotten metal in the microwave but there has been a plastic fork at 4am before. Neither will admit who it was.
27. Who cooks at 2 in the morning?
Reeves. He likes to be productive. Though Elise has been known to bake brownies on a whim.
28. Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1 a.m.?
Elise. Completely by accident. She’ll be in her own little world in the kitchen getting lost in her thoughts. Most of the time she tries to catch it because she doesn’t want her insomnia to bother Reeves but sometimes subconsciously she’ll let it ring out.
29. Who licks the spoon when they’re baking brownies?
They both do. Rebellious kids at heart. Salmonella who? Never met ‘em.  It’s chocolate. Of course they sample.
30. Who likes doing the dishes?
If they are both home and they’ve had dinner sometimes they’ll do them together. Reeves will do them if she has some extra work to catch up on. Because he is a sweetheart and knows how much a small gesture means to her. And cleaning isn’t just ‘for women folk’.
31. Who has bigger cravings? What are they?
Reeves gets cravings when on the road. Normally it’s for the little greasy hole in the wall place they like to get breakfast after a drunken night.
Elise likes dark chocolate Reeses.
32. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?
Reeves. Again, small gestures. He knows her love language.
33. How do they eat ice cream? What’s their favorite flavors?
Well.. they know their mothers would frown at them and tell them to get a bowl, but a lot of times they buy little personal ice screams like Ben & Jerry’s or something and will sit on the couch with their own little pint in hand. ( There are a lot of dueling spoons as they normally like to also steal from each other. ) IF they do buy a normal sized container of ice cream they’ll use a bowl because those containers sweat a lot and then start sagging.
Elise really likes that new line of Haagan Dazs spirits collection lately. She really likes the Irish Cream and the Bourbon sometimes makes her feel really grown up in a silly way. But normally she just gets something with a lot of chocolate. Possibly with brownie or nuts.
Reeves is good with simple classics like Rocky Road ( which if it doesn’t have coconut in the formula, because some heathens do, Elise will definitely try and steal ), peanut butter cup, and cookie dough.
34. Do they go on dates? What are they like?
They do go on a lot of simple ones like out to a bar or concert. It’s kind of his scene and she is fine with the relaxed atmosphere. Even just going out for some pizza and a movie is a good time for them. There is always something going on nearby. Sometimes it’s just an adventure down to one of the boardwalks for a few hours. ( yes, they, and by they I mean Elise’s park passes with a guest. She’s bought them for years. Before they were together she would sometimes like to just wander around and have a nice day to herself. Personal days are important. Her ex with the previous marriages wasn’t really a entertainment park person... )
35. What do they smell when they smell amortentia?
What equates out to Reeves aftershave, cologne, with a small tinge of his sweet sweat after a gig.
36. Which one is the secret snuggler?
If we are talking secret, I guess Elise??? Because everyone knows within 2 seconds of meeting Reeves he is a snuggler.
37. Which one offers their jacket to the other when they complain they feel cold?
Reeves. Elise is more likely to suffer in silence because she knew she should have brought a better coat even if the forecast said it would be fine. But Reeves can tell and will insist.
38. Who reaches for the other one’s hand while driving?
Reeves. He’s all about that touch. Elise is getting better at just doing it.
39. Who leaves little notes in the other one’s lunch? (Bonus: What does it say?)
Well.. Elise is the only one that might pack a lunch so I guess Reeves? if he is being a house husband for the week?? It isn’t really a thing that happens often. It’s more little text messages here and there. Cute notes are left in on bathroom mirror or on the night stands if the other has to leave while the other is sleeping. But packed lunches aren’t super a thing generally
40. Who is the most affectionate?
Reeves. Hands down. But that doesn’t mean Elise isn’t in her own way. And she is learning to be more physical in daily life.
41. Who is the big spoon/little spoon?
Normally Elise is the little spoon. But if Reeves has been gone a long time or is having a bad day/upset about something ( generally not Elise related; family, friends, career related ) she’ll turn over and curl up behind him with her arms wrapped around him and her head buried into his back. Kisses planted gently on his spine. She knows when he needs some extra comfort.
42. What is their favorite feature of their partner?
Reeves on Elise: lips ( she does this thing where she bites her lip and it kills him ) and eyes ( he is able to understand a lot from her eyes when she just can’t get the words out ) Also her smile can make him melt.
Elise on Reeves: his confidence and sense of humor ( he is easy to her to talk to and can get her to relax and want to talk. I guess she should also add in his musical compositions with the reunion being her case and point. ) Physically it is his ass and his occasional flirtation with scruff. And of course his eyes/smile. She can also read a lot from him.
43. What is the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
Well first off, Elise finally breaks it off with her ‘serious’ but really not that serious MANFRIEND. She knows deep down that he was mostly just a safety net/security blanket. She did care for him but nothing was ever going to come of it and she was too scared to even think about wanting more.
Reeves definitely starts visiting his hometown ( and friends ) more often as they start to work on a relationship finally.
44. What are their nicknames for each other?
Elise mostly just calls him Reeves. She has been known to call out a ‘babe’ ‘handsome’ ‘good looking’ just nonchalantly in greeting. Babe is probably her most popular one for him. Every once in a while she might let drop an endearment in Spanish ( especially if they have been with his family or listening to a lot of Spanish music [ she’s a pretty big Juanes fan ] which they do a lot when having Mexican. )
Reeves on the other hand is all about the nicknames. Babe/baby, sweetie, El, beautiful/bonita, mi amor, mi corozon. He uses a lot. Elise finds them really sweet and they make her smile. ( And thank GOD he stays away from things like ‘honey bunny’ or ‘pookie’ or anything related to food. Definitely not their style. )
There are times they call each other by their last names as a call back to high school.
45. Who worries the most? Over what?
Elise. Over everything. She has pretty bad anxiety. Though Reeves definitely worries over Elise possibly trying to run away in the beginning. ( Though he knows it isn’t because she doesn’t feel for him. She’s just scared and not sure how to handle a fully healthy relationship. ) He knows that she needs reassurances and is worried that with his traveling she might be left with her thoughts too long and talk her out of this thing they have been circling for over a decade.
46. Who initiates kisses?
Reeves normally. Elise does start doing it more but that is more often in the comfort of their own space than in public.
47. Who says I love you first? How did it happen?
Reeves, obviously. He had it all planned out. It was going to be all romantic and a Big Moment(tm). But he’s talking to her and watching as she does dishes and he just blurts it out without a thought. The look on his face after when he realizes what he’d done is priceless and draws an ‘awww’ from her as she takes in his upset face at having spoiled his plans. She just pulls him over and wraps her arms around the back of his neck, trying not to get soap suds on him and looking up at him affectionately, sprinkling little kisses on his lips as she tries to comfort him. But just. The look.  It's like comforting an upset baby. They were trying to walk on their own and got two steps before doing something silly and falling over and she just walks over and draws him to her as he sulks saying 'aww' sweetly and giving a sweet kiss as her heart overflows with affection at his adorably upset face.
48. Who tells their friends/family about their relationship first?
Reeves. Elise is a pretty private person and doesn’t have too many close friends or talk about things like feelings with her parents really. Reeves does wait until he and Elise have had time to kind of talk at least a little bit about their situation before he spills it to their old high school classmates like Jake or Scott or even Sam.
49. What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Facetime. Lots of texting and phone calls. A lot of times Reeves will call after a gig to check and see if she has actually gone to sleep or she’ll call him if she is up late and knows he probably just got off stage.
They also will watch Netflix together if they’ve been marathoning something.
50. Who gets overwhelmed by small acts of kindness?
Elise. Even if it is just something as simple as Reeves surprising her with her favorite take out at work because he knows she probably skipped lunch or setting up a relaxing bath for her when she gets home from a long day or just letting her have some space to herself sometimes

Chapter 14 of ?
Liang and Keiko had found their way back to the bathroom. The one taped shut with the charms that seared flesh. There had been no further sign of the ghost child, nor of the spirit that had saved Liang before. It truly seemed as if it were just the two of them in that building, though he was sure he could hear footsteps now and then. They'd found little to do, beyond circling the building a few times, trying to find something that might be of use. A way to open the main doors, a clue to where the others may have gone, just anything. At first, the only new thing Liang could note was that someone had scrawled over a flyer stuck to the wall. Before, the flyer had been uninteresting. A bake sale advertisement from before Heavenly Host closed its gates. When they passed the flyer for maybe the third time, it had blood on it. Not in splatters or drops either, no spray or lean. It hadn't just gotten there by mistake. No no, something was written there, scrawled in sloppy and shaky Chinese. Smeared in unsteady blood letters with several jittery mistakes, parts of the lettering reversed, trails where the writer's hand weakened and fell from the paper, and points where the letters went over the edge of the paper and onto the wall instead.

It was most likely from the spirit from before. A message to someone, to tell them to meet in the art classroom, just as the spirit had told him verbally, as well as something indeterminable.
Perhaps this message was written for the lost little girl to find.
Perhaps there was someone else here he was supposed to meet with.
Perhaps it was something the man wrote before he died, and the message was never even meant for Liang.
But that begged the question of how many people would actually be here expecting to communicate with their friends in Chinese. From what he could tell, the majority of people trapped here were from Japan, which made sense. The building itself had been Japanese, and the story, the legend of the school and of the deaths was one circulated in Japan. So it must have been meant at the very least for a Chinese speaker. The next question was what did the numbers mean? If the writer was from Nanba, it made sense for him to signal to specific people with numbers, but the numbers used didn't specify any of the inmates, except for maybe Qi and himself. More than anything, that was unnerving. The jumble of 1's and unfinished hanzi only complicated the message further. Something the spirit, possibly, tried to write with the last of his strength, making it an important message, but one that he could not fully tell.
Shortly after this, Keiko's sharp eye had spotted something in one of the cabinets in the art classroom that Liang had overlooked. Beneath a needle-like implement sat a white board, a thin rectangle with writing on it. A charm. If he remembered correctly, there had been similar charms around the temple where he'd grown up. It was Keiko's opinion that the charm might counteract the ones on the bathroom door, and Liang, knowing that if done correctly such things indeed had the potential for great power, had agreed to retrieve it from the cabinet. The door was locked, but unlike the front door, this one could be broken or forced. They just needed something to help them cause a little extra damage. Some of the works of art around the room would have been enough to do the trick - the room still held works from when the room was in use. Children's paintings on the easels, clay and papier-mâché models and chalk doodles stacked in the corner. Some of these items were perfectly innocent creations made by children of the past, including the odd picture or piece that looked very phallic but was undoubtedly just a clumsy drawing of a fruit bowl or animal. Other pieces matched the dark atmosphere of the school. A painting of a person hanging by their neck. A piece of paper with a red scribble and the caption 'man went splat'. A model of a child's hand with what was undeniably blood staining the fingers. Depictions of pain and fear, some in far too much detail to be the work of a child. In the end, Liang had picked up one of the clay models, judging by the scoring a cactus, and used it to break the glass of the cabinet. Taking care not to cut himself, he lifted the charm from its place. There was a genuine power within it, he could feel it.
Which was why they'd chosen to return to the bathroom, charm in hand. No discussion, but no certainty. Liang carefully laid the charm before the doors before stepping back, one arm held out to the side to keep Keiko away from any potential danger ahead of them. At first, it seemed as if nothing was happening, and then he felt the heat. It came off the charm in waves, banishing the icy cold of the abandoned school. It quickly got warm enough that the two of them began to sweat. When the first of the warding spells on the door caught fire, Liang pulled Keiko back a few more steps and held a hand up for some degree of protection. By the time all the spells were alight, the fire burned too bright to look at.
"The school's gonna burn down!" Keiko squeaked in terror. "We can't get out! We're gonna die, we're gonna-!" She cut off and went into wordless screaming as Liang pulled her back even further, stepping in front of her to block her from the flames. He felt the heat against his back threaten to burn any skin it could find. He dared a glance back, to see how the fire was spreading, and was surprised to see that the fire seemed to not so much as skim the wood of the door. It burned away the paper spells, turning them to ash, and then sputtered out, taking all the heat with it at once.
Slowly, he turned to the door and took Keiko's hand, leading her forward as she, realising the heat was gone, opened her eyes and tried to calm herself down. He didn't look at her, but he could tell she was in tears and very, very afraid. When he reached out to the door, he found the handle was cool, as if it hadn't been exposed to the fire at all. The door slid open now without hesitation, and Liang stepped into the boys' bathroom.
The bathroom was in a better state than those he had seen before, at least. There were about five stalls, as in the girls' bathroom in the main building, but all of them were locked. From the top of the stalls, he could see ropes coming up and leading to some point along the high ceiling. He wasn't sure the ceiling was meant to be that high. A few urinals stood at a low height, blocked and flooded, but not broken. Usable. Between the urinals and the stalls, a young man with purple hair was curled up in foetal position, entire body tense and very, very still. From where he stood, Liang wasn't entirely sure if the young man was still alive or not. He was either petrified in fear in the truest sense of the phrase, or he was freshly deceased and entering a state of rigor mortis.
"Motomu?"
Liang looked to Keiko as she shuffled into the room. Her eyes were fixed on the purple-haired boy on the floor, who looked up in response to his name, his movements stiff and almost unnatural.
"K-...Kei-chan..." The boy, Motomu, got to his feet, and Keiko ran to him, sobbing. The two embraced, and Liang watched them, a smile on his face. At the very least, he could be happy they'd been reunited. He decided to hang back, let them have their moment for now, and tried not to listen to their conversation. They were fairly loud, though, and it was rather awkward.
"I was so scared, big brother!"
"I know. I'm sorry. But it's okay, Kei-chan. I won't leave you again for as long as you live. I won't let the ghosts here hurt you."
"Yui...Yui was-"
"I know. Makishi too. I saw them both. I bet it was that ghost girl holding the scissors. But I saw someone hurt someone else from their own school..." The elder brother took something from his back pocket and held it out behind Keiko's back, shifting his grip to angle the object slightly. "But don't worry. Big brother will take care of everything."
In a moment, Keiko was thrown to the floor, and Motomu pinned, his arm held high over his back. Liang's knee was digging into the boy's spine, keeping him down, and he had a vice-like grip on Motomu's wrist. In the boy's hand was a knife. By the looks of it, it was new, and a professional hunting knife, but had been used and hastily wiped clean. A faint smear of red still stained the surface. From where Liang had been standing, he'd seen, from the corner of his eye, Motomu preparing to plunge the knife into his sister's neck. A quick twist of the wrist, and the boy released the knife, allowing the inmate to kick it across the room.
"B...big brother?" Keiko managed from her place on the floor, staring at the boys in shock, tears forming in her eyes already. Liang's focus, of course, was on her attacker.
"You were going to attack your own sister?!"
Motomu, to his credit, completely ignored him. "Keiko! What's wrong with you? You just went off with a stranger? I get you were scared, but you don't know this guy! He could have hurt you! Look at him, look at this place! Look at what happened to Yui. For all you know, he could have done that."
"Care to explain why you're armed, and why you're turning your weapons on us?"
"Have you seen the corpses, genius?"
Fair point, at least for the first question. "Where did you get the knife from? Why did you attack your sister?"
Motomu twisted in his grip, trying to look him in the eye. "Why did you go to prison?"
The atmosphere seemed to drop even further. The suffocating darkness wrapped around the three of them, and Liang could sense the murderous intent beneath him increase.
"Motomu. We need to work together to find a way out of this place. We can't turn on each other. Every second we're here, we're in extreme danger. We need to know you don't add to that danger. Why did you point the knife at Keiko?"
"You didn't answer my question."
"You've barely answered any of mine."
"We can't get out of here."
"You've given up?"
"Not exactly."
"But you've turned to hurting others."
"You're no saint."
"What is wrong with you?"
Motomu twisted a little, trying to look Liang in the eye. There was something about the look in his eye that seemed very wrong. Something in there was cold, and dark, and tinged with insanity. He dropped his voice low, likely so his sister would not hear his next words. "Let me tell you this much, all you need to know. The spirits here are killing people, and those people are desperate to survive. But they can't. The ghosts will kill them, or they'll suffer some accident, or starve or dehydrate or sicken, or someone else will kill them. Someone like me, or maybe someone like you, right, Mr Criminal? Because I can see it in your face, you're no stranger to the stench of blood and rot, are you? You're not as disturbed as all the poor, innocent kids who come in here and die in some horrible, tragic way. And this place? It can twist your mind, poison your thoughts and make you want to kill. Not me, though, so don't worry.
"I've just always hated those people. Fake smiles. Platitudes. Pretence. Doesn't it all just make you so angry? But there's so many rules out there, rules that fall apart once you're in here. You can do whatever you want. Go crazy. Let loose all those nasty little thoughts and feelings. You don't have to serve your time or repent for anything you did wrong in the past. No prison, no punishment, just the freedom to suffer and cause suffering until your last breath."
Liang inhaled sharply, a thought coming to him during Motomu's words. "Those people you mentioned, the ones who had been killed...Yui and Makishi...did you do something to them?"
"It doesn't matter if you're killed by the ghosts or killed by me. Either way, you die."

Cosmos Market
Hi All
It has been a little over a month since I started this project.
The first Kickstarter was unsuccessful. I will be setting up a new one next week after I sit down to talk with the investor and after my meeting with the realtor. It took a while, mostly because phones and I are not friends, along with my dyslexia screwing things up, but I got through.
I am leaving the GoFundMe up and running, because I am going to open a bookstore. I feel one step closer now then last week.
Goal
I am going to crowdfund to open a small store. It will be a combination of a second hand and indie bookstore, farm market, and artisan crafts store. I already have seven farm market and artisans ready to work out contracts for spacing to sell their wares, more then a thousand used books boxed up and ready to go, plus several boxes of crafts.
Why a bookstore?
Prior to the car accident I wanted to open a bookstore. Then the accident occurred, and that was not an option at the time because of health problems. I didn’t stop collecting books for that purpose, with the thought that someday I would return to that goal in order to open that second hand bookstore like I wanted.
Now I write books to publish and thought: wait, what if instead of just a second hand bookstore, I make it an indie bookstore and secondhand store? Perfect idea! I can sell mine, and other indie authors books.
Why a farm and artisan market?
The idea of the market has two different sources.
The first is when I studied our community and realized there is nowhere besides the farm market to sell handmade crafts that are not paintings. That gave me the idea to combined my bookstore with an artisan craft store.
The second is when I was speaking to a vendor at the farm market, one who makes both artisan crafts and farm market foods. She made a comment about wishing to have somewhere she could rent a space for a reasonable price. that gave me the idea to work with the farm market vendors.
Thus far all but two have committed. Those two stated that they would consider it if I successfully acquire the building. There are still more to be spoken with.
Why both GoFundMe and Kickstarter?
GoFundMe - I am familiar with it, there is no time limit, and goals can be adjusted as needed. Beyond that, the GoFundMe is for individuals who would like to give to the project now, because they don’t know that they will have the money later. All money from it will go towards the goal of opening the store in some form, whether in advertising, product, or bills.
Kickstarter - it is an all or nothing funding. If I hit the goal, I have to open the store. Which if I hit the goal, I will definitely open the store because I will buy my building to do so. Yes, the time is getting close for the first one, perhaps I will change programs or goals.
There was some confusion with an individual earlier about how I would give the money back if the store failed. They didn’t seem to comprehend that is not how Kickstarter works. With Kickstarter, if I hit the goal, and I open the store, I have done as promised, no refund needed. If I hit the goal but don’t open the store, that’s when I have to issue a refund.
What if you are unable to get the building in the image?
That’s when I move on to plans B or C. In other words, that’s when I buy one of the other buildings I have picked out, those that might not be as great for the goal but would work over all.
What makes building one better then two or three?
Location! It’s in a great spot for my needs.
Size, it is three times bigger then building two and four times bigger then building three.
Apartments in the upstairs. That means I can update them sooner then later with any extra money after stocking the store and rent them out. Renting just one of them out would make the buildings monthly mortgage with the amount of money I have planned to put down, renting out both would also pay the electric, gas, and trash removal.
Extra rooms beyond the store that can be rented to artisans who might wish to have a new space or bigger space to work in.
Some of the extra rooms can also be used to host various classes, either by artisans, tutors, or even myself for creative writing.
Three to Five are part of Six: renting out the spaces and offering classes will make it so all the stores profits go into further stock and employees. Insuring that there is plenty to sell and that it continue on.
Then why have plans B and C if A is so good?
Someone else might buy A. In that case it’s a good idea to have a plan B and C. There aren’t a lot of buildings for sale in the area, and I would rather not rent or lease, as I want control over the building, that only happens if I own it.
Plans B and C are also for if the first doesn’t work out for a different reason. For instance, perhaps I have a investor who is willing to back purchasing a smaller building.
Investors
I am reaching out to various angel investors as well. Yet another way to try and fund this. There is a long list of individuals for me to contact who help small businesses get off the ground.
Depending on investors, I may change building plans if one is willing to work with of the smaller ones. Would it be as profitable as the larger building? No. However, I would be able to build up the smaller store, then either try again to get my plan A building if it is still on the market, or find a different bigger building. After all, the real estate market is always changing.
If you would like to be an investor, even a small one such as fifty dollars, please use my Contact Me form. It’s primary purpose is for commissions, but it also covers other questions and communications off this website.
Loans
Why don’t I try getting a business loan? That requires a decent credit score, which I would need a job to get. It is the lack of job due to my disabilities that has caused me to take this route.
Do you have a business plan?
Yes, though it’s hand written because that’s how I roll. Actually, I have several, because I kept redrafting it as I considered new details and points. It evolved!
I keep each to make sure details that are needed are not lost in the rewrites.
Do you have a budget?
Why yes I do! Checked multiple times, to make sure the math isn’t off. It is based on building costs, bills (gas, electric, trash, accounting), employee pay, advertising prices, permits, equipment, and stock.
A basic form of it can be found at the bottom of my first Kickstarter. If you’d like to discuss it, I am open to doing so. I have a projected finances excel, I will be creating a google sheets version as well, and will be updating it as I receive new information.
You have several disabilities, how are you going to do this?
With help. That’s why there is employee pay as part of the costs. I know I physically can’t do it alone, so I will pay someone to help me. I’ve already spoken to that person, we have an agreement set out and a pay schedule.
Why should we back you?
At the end of the day, I can’t tell you what to do, nor would I. What I can tell you is this:
I managed to get my family from 50k in debt to 10k in debt in 4 years (love the parents, they’re not the best at finances, plus there was that entire stroke that just added to the mess of bills) - so I know how to balance a book and raise money.
That does not count the times I asked for help for myself, only the family as whole’s situation. After all, hard to balance my own books with no money coming in during those months I did not have any commissions or ghost writing.
I was trained as a store manager
I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration
I’m a fast study
If you are an indie author, I’ll sell your books. That means I buy several copies to sell, so you automatically get paid, and then if they do well, I buy more copies to sell.
You’ll be helping a small business get started You get a personalized signed copies of my book, yes they are digital copies but I will still be making the signing for each personal, scanning them in, adding them to the file and sending them off.
You help a disabled writer stop living with the constant worry of how to pay the bills and when will the next need to ask for help happen. Thus I stop needing to ask for donations every time life goes sideways because I barely have enough to live before that happens.
I am also a firm believer in paying it forward, so once I am no longer stuck in the cycle of I have no money, I am barely paying the bills, and I have to ask for help, I will be able to help others who may need it.
You’ll get updates on the business, what the current specials are, and even coupons for online purchases from time to time.
For those who do more then the twenty five dollar pledge, they will get signed copies of more then just my first two books. Every five past twenty-five will get one more book, unless told to stop. Example: If you do fifty dollars, you get the initial two plus five more personalized signature books.
I have done a lot of research, this isn’t just a whim, it’s not a lark, while most my notes are hand written, they are repeatedly checked as I wish to make sure that I am successful. Once it is open I do not want to have to ask a second time for help with it.
It’s a New Year, if you are feeling generous, consider helping someone start it differently then years past.
All I can ask is you take a chance. Money is important, as it funds everything. Sharing the GoFundMe is just important as it shows it to new people. All I ask is you take a few moments to share this, or the GoFundMe. I understand however, if you are not willing or able to.
Thank you all for reading this,
Jaimi

Lissa’s Plot Wishlist;;
SO, I’m bad at approaching people because I’m not sure what they’re comfortable with or what they’re expecting (or even hoping not to see) from me & my muse! This should not come as a surprise to anyone who has ever spoken to me, lmao. ANYWAYS.
I have decided to compile a post of plots & ideas that I have seen & liked && would like to write! I’ll be updating it as things go along, removing plots that are ‘taken’, that I’ve lost interest in, or whatever else!
I will in general leave these plots up for a few responses/time spent plotting between us, before I take them off the list. In general, I don’t love having the same plot with more than one person, however - with significant differences in the dynamic or events of the thread, I’m willing to give them a go!
Just as a note, also: none of these have to be romantic! Ideally, they’re meant to roll with a variety of characters, with a variety of dynamics and relationships, whether that be platonic or otherwise. ovo/ Most of these can also be altered to suit a number of settings, be they modern or medieval -- if we work together, we can make any of them suit our muses, I’m sure! just lemme know.
PLOT #1: Payment
Your muse has something they want, something they would give anything for. Maybe it’s a wish to heal a loved one, maybe it’s a wish to heal themselves, maybe they want to be a millionaire - whatever their wish, whatever their reason, they find a shady ad in the paper promising that any wish can be granted - for a price.
Natalie’s shop looks like a hoax, at first. Like somewhere your aunt goes to get this tea that totally re-aligns her energies and definitely cured her IBS -- but she’s got more for sale than hokey crystals and lucky rabbit’s feet. She can grant your muse’s wish... and all it will cost is their soul.
Or, well. Close enough. Indentured servitude is a harsh term for it, but she wants your muse’s help with something. She has enemies, research to complete, a dead master to bring back to life... and sometimes, you just need an extra pair of hands to help out.
PLOT #2: Bound
Natalie and your use don’t know one another from a hole in the ground. Neither of them have ever met. Well, except for that one time in that one place that ruined everything. Maybe it was a museum, maybe it was a weird pawn shop, maybe a creepy alleyway in the middle of the city - wherever it was, they were there, and so was ’the artifact’.
They’re not sure what they did to activate it - they bumped together, maybe, or they both touched it at the same time, or, or, or… Whatever it was, they are now not the only ones in their own heads. Surges of emotions and thoughts that don’t belong to them are rushing in, and they don’t know how to control it. At first, they think it’s mood swings, hallucinations, something normal. Then, the 'binding’ starts.      Randomly pulled into the other person’s head, they can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel everything the other is going through, but can they control any of it? Heck no they can’t! They’re an unwilling audience trapped there until whatever power that makes it happen allows it to stop.
It’s only natural, then, that they would find each other and try to figure out how to stop what’s happening to them. They manage to narrow the source down to ’the artifact’, but when they go to find it, it is nowhere to be found. As they struggle to find a way out of their situation, they have to learn how to deal with it, and with each other.
Alternatively, they can know each other. Maybe they hate each other, maybe one of them has a crush on the other, maybe they’re siblings, maybe they knew each other as kids - up to you, idc, pitch me an idea!
PLOT #3: Mishap
When Natalie went out to the bar, she did expect to come home with someone -- but perhaps not your muse, not in the particular way that they did. However they made it to her house, whether to sleep off a bad trip on her couch, or enjoy a few hours in her bed, they probably weren’t expecting to wake up to supernatural chaos.
Cursed by a rival out for revenge, your muse is plunged into Natalie’s world of magic and creatures and covens (oh my!). She can’t deny what she is, now that your muse has been dragged front and center to it all -- but she also can’t have them running around, telling everyone that witches exist. She promises to fix them, if they can keep her secret... but fixing them is, perhaps, a touch more difficult than she’d expected
This plot is ideal for mundane muses, who aren’t aware of magical happenings in general. It could work for two magical muses together, of course! but it was definitely designed with muggles in mind.
PLOT #4: Personable
Fake. Dating. Plot. //jazz hands      Either Natalie or your muse has family or friends that they want to impress - or, perhaps, need to impress. It’s important to them, desperately so. Enough that they would enlist the help of a friend - new, or old - to lie to them.
     OPTIONS? SURE.
A family reunion at an inclusive resort is perhaps a big ticket place to parade a lie around, but it’s exactly where they’re headed. Surrounded by the people who think they know them best, they must figure out how, exactly, to sell their romance to the most judgmental people in their lives. ( And, oh -- there’s only one bed. )
They’re just roommates, but one of them has been lying to their family, to get them off their back. Now, though, they’re in town for a visit, and the liar is in dire need of their roommate to get in on it. In exchange, they’ll give them the better bedroom, share their car -- whatever they want, so long as they just play along.
One of them is headed to an ex’s wedding, in their hometown, and they can’t bear to show up alone. Not going isn’t an option, either - drunk and stupid, one night, they boasted to some friends about how great their life was going, and RSVP’d to go with their ‘plus one’. The only issue, of course, was... well, all the lying, duh. Now they need someone to corroborate their lies and play the role of their darling significant other -- for whatever they want in exchange, really.

Corporate Gardener Custom Career

All living organisms must be nurtured to survive, plants are no exception. Only those adept in the art of gardening can give plants their best chance, and SimGreen Corp is looking for the best. Corporate gardeners are responsible for forming and maintaining partnerships with local businesses and farms across the country, all for the sake of maximizing profits for both SimGreen Corp and partners, while bringing the most cost efficient and quality produce to the consumers. The hours are long and the demands are high, but if you succeed, the financial security is great. This a 1-track, 10 level career that focuses on the business side of gardening. The first five levels are standard gardening jobs, but from six and on, the jobs become much more business oriented and require development of the Charisma skill. I had been working on this career months before seasons was released with a gardening career of its own, but this one is different in that it focuses less on floral arrangement, and more on gardening matters related to big business cooperations. The administrative side of gardening if you will. Therefore, I decided to keep it and let it be an alternative option for aspiring gardener sims. Also, like my Jungle Adventurer Career, this career will offer on the job training in gardening (levels 1-10) and charisma (6-10), allowing you to build experience in those skills after every shift, just like real life! You will also recieve the Super Green Thumb trait after reaching level 10 of the career, so that you'll always be at your best when gardening.

Seed Planter: Happy, 0.2 pto, $35/hr, M-F, 8am-3pm Protecting earth-made nature is important, but preserving it for many years to come is a necessity. That of course means more plants must be born, and that's only possible by planting new seeds. Marvel in the growth of life. Fertilizer Junkie: Happy, 0.2 pto, $50/hr, M-F, 8am-3pm Plants will grow just fine with water and sun, but they'll grow exceptionally well with some extra nutrients. Fertilizing is an important part of the process to making plants their best, so this smelly job will surely pay off in the end. Therefore, you'll carry out weekly inspections at all partner facilities, to ensure this quality remains intact and that our consumers receive only the freshest of produce. Produce Appraiser: Happy, 0.25 pto, $200/hr, S-Th, 8am-4pm Only the best and freshest of produce will be accepted for delivery to our selling facilities and only gardeners of your level can determine what makes the cut. Analyze the multitude of crops and find the diamonds in the rough. Sales Rep: Happy, 0.25 pto, $250/hr, MWFS, 9am-5pm Sales isn't an easy job, but someone's got to do it. It's your job to scout and recruit prospective new partners to join the company and expand the business. It's a difficult job, but if you can succeed, the financial compensation will surely be worth it. Market Manager: Happy, 0.3 pto, $300/hr, MTThF, 9am-5pm You've done great work out in the field, and now you get to do great work in the office too. You are now responsible for the management of several facilities and partner farms and keeping production at a maximum, such that the market continues to boom. You'll make weekly visits on-site to ensure everything is going smoothly. A machine only runs as well as its parts, so you must keep them well-maintained. SimGreen Corp CEO: Happy, 0.3 pto, $350/hr, MWF, 9am-5pm You started at the bottom as a simple water person and rose to the very top to become the CEO of SimGreen Corp. You've been handed the keys to the kingdom and are free to do with them as you will. However, keep in mind that a ship is only as sturdy as its captain, so it's your duty to keep it afloat for many years to come. This is a base game compatible career as it uses only base game skills. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions on how to improve it. I hope to add chance cards and maybe even daily tasks at some point in the future. This is going to be a bit lengthy, and even though it was a small purchase and only a few bucks, I caught a scammer and im proud of myself. Plus the whole thing was insanely extra and annoying so I’m just gonna share it with you.
So onto the story…
Last night I was working a closing shift. Around 8 (2 hours before closing), a woman and her son come up to my register to check out. At this point there are no other customers. She has 12 red mangoes, and that’s all.
I go to ring them up but halfway through me typing the produce code for them, she asks, “these are the ones that are $3 for $1, right?” So I pause mid-code type, change it to a price inquiry, type it in, and inform her, “errr, no, they'e 88 cents a piece.”
Sooo… here’s where it gets good. We’ll refer to my coworker in produce by the name “Richard”. It is extremely important to note that Richard always wears a black company hat while on the clock. Next to no one else does this.
She tells me, “well Richard over there in produce said they were 3 for $1.”
Okay… at the time I wasn’t really thinking about it, but looking back I think my subconsious kicked in and smelled something fishy. Here in good old Colorado, and at my store, mangoes are never 3 for $1 unless we’re having one of our special 3 day sales… in the summer. They haven’t been that cheap in I don’t know how long, and my 2 year anniversary is in February, so I’ve been there long enough to know about that. Additionally, There’s been no other customers coming up with complaints about the price, which if it’s wrong, mangoes are popular, so I would have heard about it by now. And it was the last day of our weekly ad cycle so, what even?
So as a recap - at this point, I have a woman and her son at my register, claiming the mangoes are 3 for $1, and she’s specifically using an employee’s name to convince me she’s right, but I am doubtful. Already the beginning of a good scam story, right?
Well, here’s where it gets even better. Let me tell you how our conversation went.
Her: Richard in produce said I could have them for 3 for 1.
Me: err, okay well let me call and see.
Richard (over the phone): hello?
Me: hey, man, so what’s going on with the mangoes? Like, What price are they back there?
Richard: um… 88 cents. Wait… let me double check and look at organics too hold on.
Me: okay. *puts down phone and turns to woman* well, he’s saying they’re 88 cents a piece as well but he’s double checking.
Her: well I just talked to Richard back there a minute ago! Richard told me that I could have them 3 for $1. He was wearing a hat! Richard told me that was the price!
Richard (calling me back on the phone): yeah the regular ones are 88 cents. Organic 98.
Me: and there’s no sign anywhere that says 3 for 1? I have a woman up here saying that you said she could have them at 3 for a dollar.
Richard: ..no? They'e 88 cents.
Her: Richard back in produce told me!
Me, knowing I was speaking to Richard but asks anyway: right uh.. is this Richard?
Richard: yeah..?
Me: well there’s a woman up here claiming that YOU told her that the mangoes were 3 for a dollar.
Richard, annoyed: is it (brief description of woman at my register)?
Me: yes.
Richard: I saw her in my department but she didn’t speak to me. I haven’t talked to anyone. I’ve been on lunch for the last half hour.
Me: okay, thank you. *sets phone back down, turns, faces woman, and looks her right in her eyes*
So I just got off of the phone with Richard, and he says that he didn’t tell you that, and that he’s been on lunch for the last half hour.
— so at this point she seems to understand that her scam isn’t working, but refuses to back down. At this point in getting a line but I’m INVESTED in this at this point, and there’s nothing I can really do at this point anyways because she won’t back down, so i am stuck there while she changes her scam from “Richard in produce told me” to now we are at -
Her: *turning towards the store and looking around* well it must have been somebody else then!! Who was it? I know he had a hat…
Me: …right well, Richard is our produce manager, sooooo….
She begins scanning the store for employees to pin this on, but hilariously, since she picked 8pm on a Tuesday night, the store is practically a ghost town void of both customers AND employees. Literally the only other employee that she can see besides me and Richard is a guy working in the meat department back room behind a glass wall.
Now, the thing is, is that the meat guys basically never leave their area, and they don’t rove the floor either as right next to the meat counter there are double doors leading to the back room. While they do face produce, they’re not exactly close to it. They have a coffin case in between them, and the doors for the back room that produce uses are literally on the opposite side of the store that meat counter is.
To her credit, I think the woman knew that trying to pin it on the meat guy, Who actually conveniently was wearing the same color and type of hat as Richard was, was ridiculous and wouldn’t have made any sense because she didn’t try to blame him for this. So not as stupid as you’d think, but still pretty questionable.
Anyways, I feel like at this point ive done all I can do, and she STILL won’t leave or accept me all but calling her a liar (all over wanting to pay $4 for almost $11 worth of mangoes, like really lady if you'e gonna pull a scam do it for something that’s WORTH IT), so i call the manager on duty.
However, I was trying to get to the MOD before this woman did, because in MY EXPERIENCE scammers and liars will absolutely talk and walk all over you as soon as a manager shows up and lie to their face - and unfortunately managers always believe the lies and get away with it. I knew if I was able to explain the situation first, it would be different - given that my current manager WILL bend rules, but is also known to stick up for us cashiers.
Luckily, I spot her pushing a cart down an action alley towards us, so I book it over and explain everything as fast as I can. At the end i say, “but you know, She’s…” my manager tries to finish, “She’s being rude?” But I reply, “She’s lying is what she’s doing. She’s lying.” And my manager says “oh, okay. Call (supervisor) up here to deal with the lines.” So I do, as at this point we had accumulated a long one.
So she walks up and asks this woman what’s going on, and in the SNOTTIEST, RUDEST tone she says, “Who are you?” It kind of surprised me because at this point while the scammer was being mind numbingly annoying, she had been reasonably polite, so for her to get so hostile over a manager kind of surprised me, but at this point, thank god, said manager was in charge and dealing with it now.
I took care of a few other customers while they were talking, and as soon as my line was done i excused myself and hung out by my supervisors register, which happened to be close enough to listen but far away enough to not be involved.
And I can hear what they'e saying - my manager having been informed of the scam, is holding firm on the 88 cent price, and the woman, for some unfathomable reason, is still insistent on the price. I think at this point she knew she was caught and was trying to leave gracefully by making it seem like a mistake, but it was really annoying.
Her: it must have been in the online ad.. unless the online ad is wrong.
Manager: they haven’t been that price for a while, MAYBE it was like that 2 weeks ago… (so not in any recent ad she might have “gotten confused” about.)
Even better was that… now, I didn’t find this out until afterwards as my supervisor started to ask me what was going on and since I was explaing it I didn’t hear this part of the drama… but my manager came up to me afterwards after she was done talking to the woman, that apparently the woman switched tactic again, never mentioned Richard, and instead said that she had called the store and asked about the price and whoever was on the phone, was now the magical entity that told her the mythical price of 3 for $1
Absolutely fucking hilariously, said manager said that she had gotten a call like that, answered it herself, and knew for a fact that she did not tell this woman they were 3 for a dollar.
Fucking OH MY GOD WOMAN, you got caught! It’s been obvious for the past 10 minutes that you'e not fleecing any of us! You can save yourself the most dignity by just… FUCKING OFF!
The whole thing was super obnoxious, but handle-able and im proud of myself for sticking to my guns and glad that my manager backed me up and stood firm, as orginally, before i said that the woman was lying, she started telling me to just give them to her for that price. So it was nice that she took me seriously and stood her (our) ground.
The only frustrating thing is that since I have borderline personality disorder… I’m not afraid of confrontation by any means (obviously) but sometimes my body overreacts to my emotion as well. So while I was keeping a cool and level head on the outside (believe it or not) my body was giving me away… my face was flushing, my voice was uneven, my body became stiff and weird and gangly, on top of shaking… too much adrenaline. But other than that I’m happy on how it worked out. Luckily I think my supervisor saw I was a bit jittery and sent me on my break to cool off.
And may I also say, that there’s few other customers that I hate as much as ones who name drop when the person they’re naming didn’t do what they claim they did. Richard seemed mad but cool and collected.. I know if someone did that to me like she did to him I would be stomping over and being like “she said WHAT now? No I did NOT!!!!!!” Back tf up. But that’s just another reason I don’t wear my name tag… can’t use my name if it’s not broadcasted!
But anyways kids, just keep in mind that name dropping is actually a really common way of scamming, it gives the illusion that they really did talk to someone when they didn’t. So it never hurts to double check with that person.
