so so so we're all aware that caelum’s name means heaven or sky, right? now imagine two scenes connected by a match cut transition where in the first scene, we’re witnessing freelancer, gavin, and caelum spend halloween together in the prime universe. caelum jumping up and down the sofa because cookies! candies! fun fun fun! and freelancer, with a smile on their face, reaching up to him so he would calm down a bit and also not break their couch, you know. gavin stands there, peacefully smiling, watching them. this is his peace, his haven. then it cuts to vindemiator and imp!freelancer solemnly watching the night sky together, with freelancer quietly stretching their arm skywards to pretend as if they're touching it, holding it. this is the closest thing they have to tranquility. once it crumbles, they're left with nothing.

🤍DavidxAngel: I feel like this one is the most obvious but David loves spooning Angel. He loves the way he can encompass their entire body, completely wrapping his arms around them. He nuzzles into their neck & feels like he can finally breathe. After he lost his dad and almost lost Asher, he constantly worries about his loved ones & likes knowing he can at least keep Angel safe when they’re like this. 🤍

🤍AsherxBabe: Asher falls asleep with his arm around Babe & their head on his chest but throughout the night he moves around ALOT. They end up top and tailing, he’ll lay across the top of the pillow’s, half off the bed, you name it. Babe often finds themself moving across the bed to find Ash, depending on how tired they are they either move him back up or just lay with him in whatever place he’s ended up. 🤍

🤍MiloxSweetheart: Sweetheart often ends up sat between Milo’s legs. He massages their shoulders and back whilst they both talk about their work days, trying to relieve some of their stress. They slowly fall asleep against his stomach. Sometimes they turn onto their stomach and trace across his scars if he’s the one to fall asleep first. 🤍

🤍DamienxHuxley: They’re both quite warm so tend to snuggle more whilst watching movies or gaming. But they still always have some sort of contact. One arm around a Dames waist or shoulders, even just holding hands sometimes. Just soft and gentle confirmations of their love whilst they sleep.

🤍GavinXFL: Gavin often find him self falling asleep on their stomach. They like to talk before they go to sleep, Fl laying on their back playing with his hair & Gavin on his stomach between their legs, drawing patterns on their stomach or massaging their thighs. He loves that his touch can do so many different things for them & helping them sleep, especially when they’re stressed about D.A.M.N or overworking, is one of them. 🤍

🤍LaskoxPartner: Lasko often sleeps on his stomach so his partner will work around that. Laying on their side to watch him whilst he sleeps & wrap an arm around him. Sometimes scooping him up into their arms. If they fall asleep first Lasko will climb onto them & just become a human weighted blanket. 🤍

🤍SamxDarlin: Darlin loves laying on Sam’s chest, his heartbeat calms them down & when they can hear it they know he’s alright. Similarly Sam loves holding them, he knows they’re going to get themselves into danger no matter what but when his arms are wrapped around them & he’s brushing hair out of their face or attempting to unfurrow their brows he know’s at least for now that they’re ok and getting at least some of the care they deserve 🤍

🤍VincentxLovely: They both fall asleep on their sides, hugging each other. They both enjoy the closeness and looking at each other. Vincent will often tell them funny story’s if they’re struggling to sleep and they love watching his facial expressions as he does it. Vincent is just so in love & can & will find ways to stare at lovely whilst they do anything, including sleep. 🤍

🤍AaronxSmartass: Sleeping on Aaron’s lap whilst he’s working is now a common occurrence for Smartass. If he’s at his desk they fall asleep with their head on his shoulders and he often carries them to bed. Aaron loves doing it, gently tucking them in and watching them sleep for a little while before trying to do the same himself is his favourite part of the day. 🤍

🤍Imp!VegaxPet: He will literally hold them in a bridal position whilst sitting down. They love plaiting his hair & tucking their head into his collar bone. Pet often falls asleep listening to him talk about aria or whilst Vega updates them on his plans & he loves that they feel safe enough with him to let him completely support them, even whilst they are sleeping.🤍

Florida's genocidal legislation against transgender people: a basic guide on what's happening

Preface

Queer people in Florida -- ESPECIALLY trans people of all ages -- are in trouble and it's largely going unreported. State senators and representatives openly called the trans community demons, imps, predators, and called for the erasure of the LGBTQ community this legislative session. Media outlets are largely not reporting on this/mainly focusing on pride events being canceled, and while that’s obviously terrible, that’s a tiny fraction of the problem.

I wrote this to help spread the word because my friends, family, community, and I are being affected. They are trying to kill us and all I can do is keep screaming and hope that someone hears me.

Please note, this focuses on Florida's anti-LGBTQ laws. Bills targeting immigrants, BIPOC folks, education, how history can be taught in schools, and more were passed this session as well. The NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Equality Florida, and the Florida Immigrant Coalition have all released travel advisories warning Black, Hispanic, queer people, and immigrants from traveling to the state. I reference some of these laws in this post but don't go in depth on most of them; I'll put some sources at the bottom if you'd like to do further reading.

As of May 22, 2023, here is what's happening in Florida:

Health care

SB 254 (gender affirming care ban)

Gender affirming health care has been dramatically limited/essentially banned for transgender people of ALL ages. This law, SB 254, went into effect immediately upon signing (May 17, 2023).

Youth care was already banned by ruling of the Board of Medicine in February; SB 254 puts it into law. Trans kids who were receiving care prior to the ban have been grandfathered in and can continue their care; no new minors can receive care (puberty blockers, HRT, surgery, etc.).

Physicians and health care workers could be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for providing gender-affirming care to children not grandfathered in.

Adults who were on HRT/are looking to be put on HRT must get their prescription in person from an MD or DO. (About 80% of trans people in FL were getting care from nurse practitioners/telehealth.)

Adults also must sign an informed consent document created by the Florida Board of Medicine before they can receive care. That document does not yet exist. Some providers are theorizing it may never exist. Another concern is that it could be used to create a state registry of trans people.

As of now, places like Planned Parenthood have had to pause gender affirming care because there is no informed consent document. Pharmacies are (inconsistently) declining refill requests for HRT.

SB 1580 (right to discriminate)

While this bill does not directly reference trans people (that I know of), the “Protections of Medical Conscience Act” — which is colloquially being referred to as the “Let Them Die Act” — allows health care providers or payors to deny service on the basis of “a conscience-based objection.” This includes any ethical, moral, or religious beliefs, and the bill provides no definition for what constitutes a moral or ethical belief.

This bill puts trans, queer, BIPOC, disabled, and otherwise marginalized people at risk of being medically neglected or otherwise discriminated against without repercussions.

Access to public life

HB 1521 (bathrooms)

With the signing of HB 1521, as of July 1, 2023, trans people will be required to use the bathroom that correlates with their sex assigned at birth in certain public areas. These include buildings owned/leased by governmental entities, schools, universities, private colleges, hospitals owned by universities, some sports arenas, convention centers, city parks, beaches, airports, and more.

If a trans person is in a bathroom with a cis person and the cis person complains, an employee can tell the trans person to leave. Refusing to do so would bring a trespassing charge against the trans person. This can carry a sentence of up to a year in jail.

Gender markers/updated birth certificates will not protect trans people from this law. The law says that sex is determined as “indicated by the person’s sex chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, and internal and external genitalia present at birth.”

SB 1438 (drag ban)

This law went into effect immediately upon being signed. It's written vaguely but bans kids and teens from attending certain performances in private venues, such as drag shows (including family-friendly ones).

Additionally, it bans cities, counties and other governments from issuing permits for events that feature drag performers. If this aspect of the law is violated, the organizer of the event would face a first-degree misdemeanor.

The law defines "adult live performances" -- which minors cannot attend -- as a show, exhibition or other presentation that "depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, (or) specific sexual activities," which include exposing breasts or genitals, "lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts" when it's offensive to "prevailing standards" and is "without serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for the age of the child present."

As a slight side note -- it was during a discussion for this bill's companion House bill that Florida Rep. Randy Fine, a Jewish man who also helped pass a bill against anti-Semitism, characterized queer people as predators and called for the erasure of the LGBTQ community: "If it means erasing a community because you have to target children, then damn right we oughta do it. I just don’t think you have to inherently say 'cause you’re lesbian or gay you have to target children.' I find that statement to be offensive to them."

As of May 22, Treasure Coast Pride, Tampa Pride, and St. Cloud Pride canceled their events/parts of their events as a precaution because of this bill.

Education and families

SB 254 (cont.)

SB 254 allows the state to remove a child from a parent if the child is receiving gender affirming care/if the child is “at risk” of receiving care, or if the parent is trans/suspected of being trans. PLEASE NOTE I am not a parent and I am a little less familiar with this aspect of the law. I believe this only applies in custody cases. Tiktok user @/frogexecutive has been posting a lot about this because they just fled Florida; their page has more info.

HB 1069 (education)

House Bill 1069 expanded the “Don’t Say Gay” bill through 8th grade. It also bans schools from using students’ or teachers’ preferred names or pronouns. It goes into effect on July 1, 2023. Separately, the Board of Education voted to ban the teaching of anything related to gender/sexuality through 12th grade, but that wasn't signed into law. I'm not sure if/how that will be enforced.

*Note: SB 266, Florida's STOP Woke Act, and other bills prohibit public colleges/universities from using funds for diversity and equity programs, impact what can/can't be taught in classrooms, and limit teachings on queerness, race, history, etc. I'm not going in-depth on these bills but if you're interested in education in Florida, those two laws especially are ones to look into.

It's late. They're tired - they're always tired lately, the toll of the last six months leaving them with an exhaustion that’s bone-deep; a strain he can feel all the way down to his core.

It's the classes. Not just the brutal curriculum the academy keeps, but the additional lessons they've been getting from the Haven's freelancer coordinator, under the guise of a faculty internship.

Healing is a delicate art, and not one that the academy values, despite its necessity. From what he's been told, the 'lessons' are barely more than skin deep, useful for superficial wounds and little else.

It's another shackle, another tool for controlling an empowered population that should be better than this; that had the strength to overthrow their oppressors, but chose not to.

…but not all of them. Not his freelancer. And not their tutor, a brilliant, gentle mind fostered under Avior’s wing.

But still, it takes a toll. One he knows all too well. He's tired, too.

And hungry.

It has been almost two weeks since he last fed. Since his arrival at the Haven, he's been assigned a visitor, someone he's grown to know over the last few months. But two weeks ago, their sessions had been cancelled at the last minute. Permanently.

It's not Avior's fault. He was doing his best to source an alternative, but he'd already had more than enough on his plate before this. And besides, Vindemiator has some ideas about who may be behind the last minute changes. He hasn't been here long, but he already has a list of adversaries, empowered humans who would like nothing more than to see him harmed.

There are one or two names at the top of that list.

The hunger leaves him weak, although he tries not to show it. They only get such small windows of time together, and he wouldn't waste it - wouldn't ruin it with the sour taste of their worry, further staining the already muted glow of their emotions.

(Sometimes, in brief moments, he gets glimpses of their true colours - rosy pinks and brilliant gold, small sunbursts amidst the rain. Sometimes, he feels it too.)

"Vin?"

Their voice is soft and careful, and when he blinks back into the moment, he finds that they're closer than he remembers them being. Close enough that he forgets himself for a moment and lets the facade slip, lets some of his weariness slip through as he leans into their touch.

"Are you okay?"

He forges a smile. "As well as any of us can be. You're tired too, freelancer. Healing classes have been going well?"

They don't take the bait, and they don't look away.

"Vin." It's something about the way they say his name like that, something that's so simply and uniquely them that undermines his defences, sinking into the heart of him.

He can't bring himself to lie to them.

"I'm weaker than usual. But I’ll be fine. It will pass."

Their brow pinches, a dark thread of worry seeping through their aura like a stain. "Weaker? But I thought… Avior said that the d(a)emons here had an arrangement."

"My… arrangement, as you put it, fell through."

"When?"

"Two weeks ago."

Their eyes widen, impossibly dark in the shadows of his quarters. He's grown used to the darkness, preferring it to the harsh brightness of the fluorescents, but he wishes now that he had the light to see them now. Watch the full spectrum of emotion that crosses their features, before they close it off behind a mask of neutrality.

"...you should have told me."

But even with as good as they've gotten at hiding their emotions, there's no changing the fact that he’s a demon.

There's a thread of guilt in their emotions now, almost superseded by the anger. But not at him, he realises - but themself.

And just, no.

"Freelancer-"

They're moving again, drawing back as his heart clenches, and he wants to reach out for them, except he won't. Not if they’re pulling back from him like this - not if his touch is unwanted. He bites down on his tongue, his teeth longer and sharper than usual - another side effect of his increasing weakness, the failure of the glamour - and he can do nothing except watch as they pull away completely.

Except - they don't leave.

They’re gripping the hem of their shirt, pulling the worn fabric up and off until their chest is bare, and it’s then that the realisation hits him, dousing like a flood of ice cold water.

He closes the distance between them before their shirt drops to the floor, collecting their wrists, his touch carefully neutral.

“Freelancer, no.”

“I can help. Let me help.”

“No.” Their eyes are wide again, glittering like obsidian in the darkness. “Not like this. Not because of some - need.”

Their eyes flicker, the anger within them dimming, replaced by something with the sharp edge of hurt, before it’s gone.

“They’re starving you.”

He releases a dismissive snort. “I’ve dealt with worse.”

“You shouldn’t have to.” Their jaw hardens, and he can feel it then, that stubborn edge of determination, that fire that he’s grown to love from them. "They’ve taken so much from us. They don't get this, too."

He lets them twist their wrists out of his grip, their hands moving to hover over his neck, his shoulders. They still won’t make contact, not without him initiating, and it’s a gesture he appreciates, more than they know.

It’s a cruel joke, his means of existence on this plane. The lack of agency, of choice.

He won’t take that from them.

As if they’re reading his thoughts, they drop their hands, leaning in close. "If this is about my own comfort-"

"It's because you shouldn't have to."

"But what if I want to?"

His throat closes up. He can’t speak. Can’t find the air to speak it. They close their eyes, a little furrow in their brow forming, before-

Vindemiator tastes the cruelty of an Enforcer. Freelancer immediately runs to him, helps him up, and holds him still. Say it!— the Enforcer commands. The Freelancer sits there, beside him, as if some semblance of mercy, as if the closest thing to salvation. With such careful touches, they make him feel like a sacred thing. Something that holds value. He looks at them (Worry— worry in their eyes... why, why for me?) and says: Thank you. The Enforcer proceeds to talk, to mock the demon, thinking the gratitude was directed towards him— but Vindemiator hears, sees, and feels nothing but the poor, unhappy Freelancer who would do anything but leave him helpless.

Later, in the haven, in the midst of grieving their separation, he searches for them in his dreams.

okay but can we talk about how vin went off on avior for a bit there?? like we know nothing about their relationship other than those two working together, but it seems like a lot of animosity has built up?

“cold-hearted, lying” that’s got to be in reference to avior purposely lying about the haven. vin claims he isn’t mad anymore but it’s just emotion, it’s understandable if he still resents avior for the cards he’s been dealt. the way him and vega described the havens sounded absolutely terrible. you can only be understanding of a person’s motives for so long.

vega and vin have an interesting relationship. “your heart is too soft, vindemiator. but that’s what i’m here for… to do what you can’t.” vega has his own way of showing he cares. you can see it in the way he refers to his listeners as “pet” and calls fl as such for vin.

that whole line felt like vega’s form of support or even protection - maybe even a way to offer himself as someone to depend on. when we’d wanna convey something like that, we’d say, “i’ll be your shoulder to cry on” “when it gets to be too much, i’ll take the burden” and so on. vega is here to drive the nail into the coffin. he’s here to be a backup plan if someone chokes. he, without hesitation, chose to run after vindemiator to make sure everything goes smoothly. he cares so much in his own way and i really loved seeing that from him.
