I'm not the biggest fan of Oda, as many here already know. That comes from the INCREDIBLE disconnect between the fandom version of him as opposed to the canon. I see often on Twitter, Reddit, Youtube, etc etc. this treatment of Oda as some great force of pure good, and furthermore this scene as a grand bit of final wisdom. So right now, let's talk about his death scene.
The anime puts it like this:
"You told me you might find a reason to live if you lived in a world of violence and bloodshed. [...] You won't find it. You must know that already. Whether you're on the side who kills people or the side that saves people, nothing beyond what you would expect will appear. Nothing in this world can fill that lonely hole you have. You will wander the darkness for eternity. [...] Be on the side that saves people. If both sides are the same to you, become a good man. Save the weak, and protect the orphans. Neither good nor evil means much to you, I know... but that'd make you at least a bit better."
And the light novel puts it like this:
"You told me if you put yourself in a world
of violence and bloodshed, you might be able to find a
reason to live… [...] You won't find it. [...] You should know that. Whether you're on the side that
takes lives or the side that saves them, nothing beyond
your own expectations will happen. Nothing in this world
can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the
darkness for eternity. [...] Be on the side that saves people. [...] If
both sides are the same, then choose to become a good
person. Save the weak, protect the orphaned. You might
not see a great difference between right and wrong, but…
saving others is something just a bit more wonderful."
I want to break down what bothers me in these. This portion especially.
You told me you might find a reason to live if you lived in a world of violence and bloodshed. [...] You won't find it. You must know that already. Whether you're on the side who kills people or the side that saves people, nothing beyond what you would expect will appear. Nothing in this world can fill that lonely hole you have. You will wander the darkness for eternity.
You told me if you put yourself in a world
of violence and bloodshed, you might be able to find a
reason to live… [...] You won't find it. [...] You should know that. Whether you're on the side that
takes lives or the side that saves them, nothing beyond
your own expectations will happen. Nothing in this world
can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the
darkness for eternity.
I think we often forget that Dazai is still a suicidal teen in Dark Era, and that he's one that's held on to the hope he'd find something for all this time. I dont disagree with the fact he must know he won't find anything in the mafia already. But Oda misunderstands a lot of fundamental parts of Dazai, which lead to this scene being devastating.
Whether you're on the side who kills people or the side that saves people, nothing beyond what you would expect will appear.
Whether you're on the side that
takes lives or the side that saves them, nothing beyond
your own expectations will happen.
The thing is, Dazai DOES find things he doesn't expect. He meets Chuuya and Chuuya surprises him! He meets Oda and Ango and they fascinate him!! He meets Kunikida and Ranpo and everyone else and he finds them interesting!!! He gets proven wrong, he gets surprised, he has NEVER been infallible. And he's incredibly hopeful too, as stated earlier. He held on to the hope he'd find something for the past 3 years despite how horrible of an environment the mafia was for him, and he still tried his hardest to save Oda. To tell him that not only would he never find anything here, but anywhere else he goes? It's kind of.... well, shitty.
And there's another thing about this line I have to point out, something from a couple pages earlier.
"But he's different. He's sharp-witted with a mind like a
steel trap. And he's just a child—a sobbing child abandoned
in the darkness of a world far emptier than the one we're
seeing."
"He was too smart for his own good. That was why he
was always alone. The reason why Ango and I were able to
be by his side was that we understood the solitude that surrounded him, and we never stepped inside it no matter how close we stood."
Oda believes that it's Dazai's intelligence that isolates him. While this is true, it's only true to an extent. Look at Ranpo, who was also isolated because of his intelligence. He doesn't stay that way, despite not having any peers. Ranpo found his place with Fukuzawa at the agency, and there was nothing stopping Dazai from also finding his own.
Nothing in this world can fill that lonely hole you have. You will wander the darkness for eternity.
Nothing in this world
can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the
darkness for eternity.
And I don't know how to explain this to people, but telling an emotionally distressed teenager that he's going to be lonely forever is, erm, kind of bad? Especially when the person he thinks understands him the most is like... dying in his arms.
Oda tried to help Dazai in his final moments, I'm not trying to discredit that. He gave Dazai his advice and Dazai chose to take it, because he knew Oda was speaking from his own experiences. But Oda's words were still harmful to him, regardless of how well meaning they were.
How do you feel about Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, and why should we throw Leah a huge parte for being the annie we always deserve but never got much of
HELL YEAH ARE YOU KIDDING ME LEAHBETH IS THE BEST THING THATS EVER HAPPENED TO ME THIS ENTIRE YEAR OH MY GODS AND GODDESSES im fully self aware that "i look like i would have been an annabeth kid" and its because i FOR SURE WAS WHY WOULDNT ANYONE BE she is The Character the MOMENt the ICON of the AGES and leah is adapting her energy to screen so ???? perfectly ?????? like did rick just shake the book and she fell out ??????? what sorcery is this?? ??????
no but in all seriousness leah is killing it as annabeth and its super clear that she did her research and understands the character (in interviews she talks about how she read annabeth povs in later books and did research on greek mythology and athena so she could understand the lightning thief not just from percys pov but from annabeth 🥺🥺 she so annabeth coded irl i adore her) and it genuinely shows like ive microanalyzed all her expressions because her facial acting has so much DEPTH and LAYERS and OH MY GODS leah deserves all the parties and we are so privileged to have her as our annabeth chase <3 imagine being that talented at like 13
im super excited to see what additions she makes to the character in this adaptation!!! already i think she's really highlighting annabeth's battle strategy smarts over just booksmarts which EVERYONE ALWAYS FORGETS ABOUT SHES NOT JUST A BOOK NERD SHES A FUCKING GENERAL HEAD OF THE ATHENA CABIN MOST FORMIDABLE DEMIGOD AT CAMP AS A 12 YEAR OLD the duality is giving me LIFE and i love how she gets to boss around percy and grover (leah also talked about loving to get to be in charge and competitive as annabeth which shes SO REAL FOR THAT shes such an annabeth type) BUT ALSO YOU ALREADY GET TO SEE HER VULNERABILITIES AND INSECURITIES AND THE WAY SHE CARRIES HERSELF THAT MAKES HER SIMULTANEOUSLY COOL BUT ALSO IS A REFLECTION OF TRAUMA AND POOR EMOTIONAL COPING yeah basically shes not just giving us annabeth shes giving us annabeth but MORE and its making me understand her character BETTER and in a NEW way (and if you have anything to say about her portrayal in the show i will genuinely pull up with a full ass powerpoint slideshow because IF YOU MEDIA COMPREHEND FOR TWO SECONDS AND KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HER CHARACTER IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE AND ITS SO JUICY AND JALKDJFKBL)
i think about that shot of her looking at percy using medusas head through the screen porch ALL THE TIME. and her delivery of "grover can you tell your friend to pull himself together" LIKE THATS WHEN SHE TURNS TO HER PROTECTOR FOR HELP AND IT HAS A LITTLE BIT OF A SASSY IM-BETTER-THAN-YOU-PERCY VIBE TO IT BECAUSE SHES HIDING THE FACT THAT SHES SCARED AND UNCOMFORTABLE TO TALK ABOUT HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER UNAVAILABLE MOM (and percy sees right through that just as she sees right through percy and oh my gods if i get started on percabeth ill never shut up)
anyways thanks for giving me an opportunity to go on a mini rant about leahbeth i could say so much more because when i say ive analyzed every frame my girl is in i am NOT joking
but ill just end by saying that anyone who is upset by show annabeth being black literally did not understand her as a character or the percy jackson books in general so they can stfu and get their little butthurt wrong opinions out the door bc they dont belong here anyway <3 rick and becky also talked about how they hired black sensitivity readers to help write annabeth's blackness more authentically into her character in the show so very much hoping that they do that well! and im overall just super excited to see what changes they make to adapt my favorite character to a new era, a new medium, and a new audience!
go treat yourself to some leah interviews because i actually adore her and will protect her and annabeth (though arguably theyre one and the same) with my life <3
ridi im sorry i need to rant and i think youll get it 😭 like not to be a bitch but this fandom kinda going off the rails and annoying the shit out of me https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRbYASpf/ everybody in the comments unironically loving it,,, i mean wtvr ship who you want but its kinda getting delusional like ppl are just operating on thin air and pretty fancasts atp and i do Not understand or emotionally connect with any of it. at least w wolfstar theres so much material and foundation to explore but what is all the rest of this?? just hot celebrity fancasts and crack. to be fair part of me respects taking a terfs canon material and making everybody gay but the way it seems to be so oversaturating fics and the fandom that characters dont even feel like their original selves .. atp its all just surface level OCs
hello! yes! i'll be honest talking about things like this always make me a little nervous, and i feel obligated to preface anything i say with a disclaimer that none of it really matters, nothing i say matters, and you should do what you like, because--who cares. i am not an authority on--anything, frankly. my opinion holds no more weight than the next guy's, and all i'm doing here is giving it, so. essentially what im saying is--people are perfectly entitled to disagree with me, but people are not entitled to be mean to me about it xx
having said that. it is my personal opinion that s x barty is one of the worst fucking things i have ever heard lol. who even is barty who is that guy. why would s be interested in him at all. i do not understand it it does not make sense to me. from where are we sourcing the character traits and personality that we are giving barty that would ever endear sirius to him, because it objectively cannot be canon.
overall i do not get the new interest in barty + evan + pandora (+ regulus, but we won't go there)...at all, other than guessing that people were bored with the marauders and wanted a new version of them (and new celebrities to fancast) while simultaneously changing next to nothing about them other than superimposing them onto the first slytherin side characters they could rustle up. i expect ive become a bit of a broken record in regards to my dislike of the popular meow-meow-ification + complete absolution of regulus as a character in order to make him a loveable oc (just as i think erasing all the negative traits that r/s have in order to make them more likeable is just as boring), and all of that applies to those other guys as well (with the slight difference that they are, somehow, even less interesting and significant than regulus in canon), so i won't get into that too much. but i think what you say about having no emotional connection to any of it is exactly right lol--it is a sort of shift? i guess? in the fandom that is simply of no interest to me. they are characters that i just have no emotional investment in and admittedly struggle a little to understand why other people do. i am emotionally invested in, like, five characters overall (and even out of those--there's only two i'm really here for innit xx) and i personally cannot extend that investment to a creepy little side character who is mentioned maybe twice in the entire series.
and that is okay! i do not need to understand it. i don't want to say it annoys me because honestly--i don't go there, its nothing to do with me. if i dont like it i just wont interact with it, and the fact that it doesn't interest me has no bearing on what other people are into or want to do, and i couldn't give less of a shit what people do with the canon material, which is largely garbage anyway. take the bits you want from it, play around with those and ignore the rest. in that respect we are all doing exactly the same thing. but yeah i think s x barty is genuinely awful lol. hate it. very terrible. he's already got a loser werewolf boyfriend and he loves him so so much. leave him alone.
So yesterday was Nobara’s birthday the baddest in jjk she always gon eat. Anyways tell me why the official Jujutsu Kaisen account wanna post her. 😒
They fake asl cause they know we haven’t had Nobara crumbs in the manga in years. Like y’all could lowkey just tell us she alive and well for her birthday. At this point I’m not even being delusional anymore I’m beyond convinced that she is still alive and they just want to see my downfall.
PLEASE tell me why you hate george i LOATHE him but everyone seems to love him and i would LOVE to hear your right opinions!!!!
his writing is so inconsistent, if i was more interested in being sympathetic to him then i could probably get over it, but his core unwavering personality trait is feeling beholden to the women around him but then never treating them well, which is a) boringggggggg b) infuriating and excruciating when combined with the fact that everyone around seems convinced of his sainthood. like if the dude was a lesser doctor he'd spend time in AITA forums talking about how he's always friendzoned and how his family doesn't get him. doesn't help that he never got storylines beyond treating women like crap then dealing with the fallout of his own choices. it's also just very personal like i see a Best Boy Friend who thinks he's owed sex with his friends and then flips out when he's not treated like a miracle prince charming and i want to bite gnash kill. but that's my own baggage dkfjhgj
wait i did have something to complain about re: fire emblem
the catholic church that people imagine when they compare the church of seiros to the catholic church is exactly the same as the catholic church the fascist halfwits think they're joining until they see one quote from the sitting pope and lose their tiny minds and most importantly it has very little relation to the structure and functions of the church of seiros that is actually in the game
The Barbie Adapted Screenplay discourse is KILLING me like it was a fun movie but it doesn’t deserve to be in the conversation for those kinds of awards in the first place so there ❤️
Tangled anon, hi (i am so stressed right now so) can you just give me a tangled ramble please? The movie, series, fandom, anything Thanks (love you)r content
hello my love im sorry i took so long to get to this ily :( <3 <3 <3
i NEED to talk about cass tangled. every time i think about her i start eating drywall because she had sooooooo much potential in her arc and it could have been so fun
the thing is chris sonnenburg accidentally did a fantastic job making bad guys with good motivations for every other villain (lady caine, varian, the saporians to a degree, etc) and he ALMOST got there with cass. but it got completely fucked up in the middle of season 3
the first two seasons were set up to show cass feeling ignored by everyone else and looked over by everyone. she wanted to be taken seriously but she rarely ever was and i thought it was a very good set up :( plus in her minor appearances at the beginning of season 3 it was more of her remembering what she had felt before and building up her rage <3
then. THEN. the fucking confrontation ep. literally every other grievance she had was ignroed so she could say "rapunzel stole my mom so now im killing her <3" like girl what happened to feeling ignored and looked over. the vague concept of "destiny" being used throughout the show to explain literally everything is actually the most annoying thing ever. like the gothel twist couldve been okay if they hadnt used it as The Reason for cass's villain arc, but instead it was her prime motivation in all the major fights and she said shit like "you took my destiny because i was gothels daughter" like?????? what destiny???? and why would you have it by being her daughter????? her motivations were so messy and didnt make any sense. then the finale comes and zhan tiri overall is soooo underdeveloped and badly executed, then cass and rapunzel have an emotional scene that feels sooooo unearned bc none of her original motivations are addressed and the fact that her motivation turned into "i was supposed to be raised by gothel" meant that it was hard to address it at all in the finale. then ofc it culminates in the lamest final battle ever with the Big Bad of the series
it couldve been so good. i could fix this fucking show. every day i mourn what tts could have been.
