Tw: mention of self owchie
My parent just suddenly keeps noticing my self owchie scars and gets upset whenever they see it, they keep insisting I put lotion or other moisturizing cream to rid myself of the scars but so far nothing has worked, they keep getting angry and frustrated / emotional whenever they see the scars and at one point (while pointing out other things I can take my anger out on) said "if you want to cut something it can be my arms instead" which at that point for aome reason I felt weirdly angry and insulted, I've shut myself in my room and feel like I really want to cry, but my parent is right outside in the living room and can come in at any point so I don't really want to risk it, I know thier just trying to comfort me but everytime they do try its almost like getting run over by big heavy stones and by the end of it I feel worse them I already was. I don't understand what's wrong with me and why I can't just take the support and be happy thier even trying, I don't understand what I'm supposed to do and how I can get rid of these feelings of guilt shame and feelings I can't describe.
Apologies as this will sound crass, but does your parent have their own history of mental illness, manipulative behavior, or trying to guilt trip you? I fear misinterpreting this, and I'm not really an expert on normal people, but I assume most wouldn't say you could cut their arms instead; even if it is out of stress and worry.
Secondly, have you tried explaining to them the scars just won't go away? Are they confident theres some way of doing it or is it just pure denial? Did they already have knowledge of your scars or did they only learn recently?
Is it possible someone else pointed out your scars to her? In my younger years my parents would only pay attention to my health when a doctor pointed out how unhealthy I was. They'd then pay extra attention to me which would fade after a month or so, so there's a chance you can ride this out and wait for them to forget.
Do you have a safe place to cry? It's vital you have somewhere you can, even if it's a bathroom.
If you try to talk this out, i would recommend doing therapy together, just so you have a neutral party. Of course, therapy isn't possible for a lot of people and that may include you.
Good luck, though I hope you won't need it.

You want a chubby Kai hurt/comfort ask? Alright chubby Kai feels that he doesn’t look good enough to be with angel because Angel has this one handsome friend so Angel asks him what’s wrong
"For God's sake..." he grumbled as he was having a battle against the buttons of his shirt, trying to close his attire to just start the day for once.
"Need any help love?" You giggled from the bathroom as hos golden orbs narrowed before sighing and rolling his eyes. Giving uo on the dress shirt and hoing for anothe rone on his closet instead.
He would be lying if he blame it on you for his gain weight but was not entirely wrong about the issue as well. He had spacked off on his aleating habbits a bit over the past year, still remaining eating healthy things like always but increasing his appetite with some... appetitiziers you had suggested.
"Hey dont get mad at me!" You cooed as he huffed a annoyed sigh, buttoning up his shirt before he tensed at your warm embrace from behind while nuzzling on his shoulders blades.
"Enough." His hands brushed you off but you smiled instead of being offended. Knowing that even despite the years of dating, your boyfriend wasn't one used to touch neither be touched... but the tips of his ears getting all red over a simple kiss on his back and hug told you everything that he packed off on saying.
"Geez, grumpy today aren't we?" You pouted as he fixed his shirt and put on his jacket.
"If you stop commenting about my humor dearest I will take you out to that place you wanted badly." He flinched at your excited and surprised gasp before receiving a kiss on his covered cheek as you printed off to get your things as he scoffed, gloved fingers brushing against the area where your lips had been.
.
.
.
"There's that stand of crepes over there!" You tugged on his jacket as he deadpanned at you.
"If I remember correctly you saw the issue with my prwvious shirt this morning didn't you?" He arched one of his eyebrows up as you pouted.
"Is just a shirt Kai! Come on!!" You looked at him with puppy eyes "Is not every day we get one pleasee??"
That damn look of yours was gonna be the death of him...
Sighing and hating himself at already feeling aome sorta of craving for the sweet, he picked his wallet on his pocket as you squealed happily.
No one could tell by looking at his eyes that he was actually happy... seing your face brighten up like that just because of a simple sweet that HE bought to you was slightly... like a warm feeling inside his chest.
He could simply overhaul someone or his commurates that joked that he had grew "soft" on both ways because of you... but he couldn't deny it either.
"Which one will you get?" You asoed with a smile as he handed the cash and soon got his napkin put to rub his gloved hands.
"None. You asked for it, so only you get one." He eyed your pouty lips as he sighed, rubbing your cheek affectionaly, a rare sign of affection from him "Stop with that face. Im fine."
The man handed the sweet to you as he walked a bit away, waiting for you to catch up with him until he noticed you talking excitedly with another male.
His eyes immediately narrowed at the sign but before he could actually just pry you off and kill the young male he notices something... the guy had a fair share of muscles, much more than he jad before gaining weight. He was constantly speaking with a bright smile on his face as he stood way too close to his liking near you.
You... actually looked like a coupke from afar.
His teeth gritted as his hands tightened into fits... remenbering that for a long time now he couldn't even see himself in the freacking mirror anymore. Not only he had an illness but also was disgusting on appearance as well?
Constantly he got intrusive thoughts that you should have someone better. A man that could bare to have you clinged onto him qithout getting tense over it, a guy who actually took you out on dates constantly and also didn't got you in danger like he did... someone with better appearance...
"Kai?" His thoughts were interrupted when he heard your voice, looking at him with some sorta of worry "You're standing there for a while now... didn't even came when I called you to meet my friend."
He stayes quiet.. bored look locked with yours as he merely sighed, started to walk and waved at you.
"I have other places to be with. Need to finish a job Pops assigned to me."
"Oh.." you muttered, dissapointed present on yoir voice at only heating he was going to be busy for the rest of the day "Then maybe on the evening we-"
"Dont wait up. I might only be free by night time." He eued you for a bit before sighing and looking ahead of him "Dont bother with it."
"I see.." you muttered, his heart clenching at seing you, once so cheerful now just looking like a cloud was over your head...
Yet he decided to ignore.
.
.
.
He couldn't even concetrate on his work anymore... evertime he got closer to qrite or sign somwtjing he could feel his stomach double over as the movement made his ahirt and pants feel tigher than before.
"Fucking fat ass." He growled in anger as he signed with more forece than necessary a paper and almost threw it on some pile before heating some knocks "Say your name and bussines."
"Hi." You cooed, showing aprehensively your face on the door as he arched an eyebrow at your presence.
"I recalled you had other places to be qith at this time?" He said while looking at the clock stuck on the wall as you aproached his desk with a cup.
"Yeah, but it got cancelled... So-!" You put the warm cup on his desk "I thought maybe a treat could bright up the day of my handsome boyfriend."
He scoffed at that word... "handsome"... sure, as if he could be now in the state he is in.
"What is this?" He looked down at the cup and saw a white cloud with bits of caramel on top of it.
"A frappuccino!" You skiled brightly "I saw it on the menu of a cafeteria and I thought you might like it."
His eyes soften at your gesture but still he was adamant on just even breathing near that thing... it looked like one gulp of that he could gain at least 100 pounds...
"I appreciate your gesture, but Im curring all the sugary things for now." He scoffed while pushing the drink back to you before turning to get on his laptop.
The hurt you felt wasn't what bothered you but what Chisaki has been doing all day... Getting away from you like you were the plague and everything eatible at this point.
"Ok. I know how much you hate when I get like this, but what the hell is going on?" Your words seemes to stop Chisaki right when he was about to write something as he looked at you with only one narrowed eye...
"I beg you pardon?"
"Kai you cant say to me that you dont like caramel anymore! You hadn't eat nothing but a freacking apple all day and been avoiding me as well!" You exclaimed qith open arms, lowering them as well as your gaze, feeling your vision burn a bit at the feeling of tears forming "Did... did I do something..?"
A sigh once again escaped his lips, gloved fingers brushing over his darkbrow looks as he thought over his next words... Lying would get him no where and he absolietly hated the aspect of it...
Getting up he walked over you. His fingers picking on your chin and tilting it up to meet his eyes.
"You did nothing. Its only a problem of mine."
"So what is it?" You put your bottom lip out as your eyebrows furrowed. The sign of it made his own furrow deep as his jaw tighten.
"... I.." he sighed, seeing that you wouldn't back off until you knew exactly what was going on "The incident with the shirt and that encounter you had quth your friend just.. Made me think that I fallen out of shape... If I dont stop with this nonsense I might look like that filthy hero fatgum or worse... I wouldn't want you to have shame while walking besides me anyway."
It was so quiet after he finished his rants he swore he could hear his hearbeat on your ears as he waited anxiously for some sorta of response to him. Anything. Really.
"... all this because you gained a couple of pounds?" Ypu finally asked as he gritted his teeth, only to widenhis eyes at the few giggles that escaped your mouth "S-Seriously?"
"You little br-" before he could finish it yoh had pulles his mask down to kiss his lips. The shock was evident on his eyes and his body was tense and arms awkwardly hanging in the air until finally he eased uo and holdee your waist while finally kissing you back.
"You should know by now.." you panted after the kiss ended "That no matter the size or shape, I love you. Just like you dont care a bit if I gained or lost weight you love me to no ends..." you cupped his cheek as he could only stare deep i to your eyes. Someyhing you didn't know, it was that he was looking at you with so much love and adoration that even hurted.
"So that friend of yours you dont have any interest?" He carresed your hips with his thumb as you shook your head with a smile, rubbing noses against eachother.
"Nope."
"Perfect. One less sick in this world." He smirked at your gasp and call of his name in desperation, but you stoll remained glued to him.
The moment he could describe as it almost perfect if it wasn't for some intruder.
"Hey fatass we got a problem down and you need to get there." He only arched an eyebrow at Rappa but soon felt the dark airea coming out of you as you stared at Rappa with rage.
"Kai.. my beautiful man. Would you mind if I take someyhing of your office for just a bit?" He eyed you suspociouslu but nodded.
His eyes widened when you grabbed the sword Pops gave to him years ago and chased after Rappa screaming obscenities that he never thought he would have heard it from you. Especially from you.
He stared a bit astonished at where you left only to notice the drink you had brought to him. Taking into his hand he took a tentative sip before sighing in bliss.
"Sweet.."

**Fluff without plot**
like porn without plot but cute and PG and gay
Also I did 0 editing or revising cause yolo, hope you guys enjoy :)
Soft silk sheets. A mini spurge courtesy of my last trip to target. Everytime I go I swear to myself I’ll only get the thing I went there for, and everytime I come out with a leather bound journal, pack of erasers, pajamas or something christmas related among a cart full of little knick nacks and cool jizmabobs.
I stretch out, flopping over onto my back as I do and listen to the songbirds outside the window, their nice singing threatening to lure me back to sleep. For a few moments I do, feeling at peace despite the growing need to get to up for the day.
“Morning Adrian,” my husbands gruff though gentle voice awakes me. Shifting to half sit up I see him standing at the door, red hair messy, wearing only sweatpants, a gold ring around his finger with two cups of coffee in his hands “Coffee?” he asks lifting up a cup.
I give a lazy smile and nod, sitting up against the headboard as he crosses the room and carefully gets on the bed. After handing me my cup he cuddles up to me with his head on my shoulder even though he’s the taller one.
I sigh smiling, letting my eyes wonder over the room, there’s a picture of us on our wedding day, both in suits, in a cheap dollar store frame on the dresser, clothes spilling out of it as normal. Mismatched curtains on mismatching curtain rods pulled back to let the early morning sun in to rest on the rugs covering our small bedroom. Nothing’s too expensive, not even the china passed down to us that was bought at a gas station way back when but everything’s nice, warm and cozy.
“Adam?” I say, pausing to take a sip of my coffee “Do you like how we live?”
Adam looks up at me and grins, a tooth missing “I wouldn’t change a thing,”
I smile, moving to press a kiss to his lips, the bitter taste of coffee on him.
I pull away, getting off our bed and crossing over to our dresser “We should probably open the clinic soon,” I say digging through our shirts drawer looking for a specific one “What time is it actually?” I ask.
Adam suffles on the bed for his phone as I find the lime green scrub shirt I was looking for that brings out my darker green eyes “Eight twenty-six, we’ve got thirty-two minets,” he answers bolting up from our bed to join me in search of clothes.
Adam’s still searching for pants when I start fussing over my long brown wavy hair in the bathroom mirror. I get it tamed as he asks “Where are my black and red scrubs?”
I walk over to a basket of clean laundry and after digging for a millisecond I pull out the matching shirt and pants “You mean these?” I chuckle and grab my white doctors coat. He laughs, grabbing them from me and shoves them on.
Together we dash down the flight of stairs to the backroom of our clinic we own and live above. Bustling out into the waiting area I see a few patients waiting and our receptionist, Clark talking on the phone.
Upon seeing us he puts whoever was on the line on hold and hands me a clipboard “Dr. Devorack Room 1 is waiting for you,” he pauses reaching for another clipboard and giving it to Adam “Nurse Adam Room 3 is the Kylands, they’re here for their immunizations.”
Clark goes back to the phone as Adam and I go off to do our duties. Before I slip into the first room I catch Adam’s eye and blow him a kiss, he smirks and rolls his eyes as I slip into the room.
I smile gently at the small kid and mom who both look worse for wear. The kid looks about to be about six and the mom about mid thirties, both extremely tired and the kid has a few tears running down his cheeks, more coming whenever he swallows.
“Hi, I’m Dr. Devorack,” I say sitting in the swivel chair at the desk “What seems to be the problem?”
The mom rubs her eyes and tells me her son’s throat really hurts to the point he hasn’t eaten yet today. I nod and ask the kid to hop up the table while I grab a tongue stick.
Gently I feel his throat which is swollen and hot then ask him to say “aww” for me. Little white dots line his throat and I decide to take his temperature. It reads 38.1*C and I start typing in my computer “Your son has a case of Strep Throat, so I’m going to give you a precription to give to him for ten days,” I say printing off the required sheet “Make sure he takes all ten days or the infection might come back.”
She nods thanking me, visibly relieved as I stand and get the door for them. A warm feeling spreads from my chest as I smile, something about helping people makes me feel this way. Grabbing the clipboard I head back to the waiting room with the mom and kid.
Clark already has another clipboard for me when I reach his desk and I let myself fall into the familiar routine of helping patients all day long, only stopping for a quick lunch with Adam, Clark and our other nurse Natasha.
Closing time rolls around at five, Clark and Natasha going home before I finish with my last patient of the day, Adam doing some paperwork while he waits for me.
I wasn’t going to take them honestly, they came in on the dot and Clark was already out the door with Natasha on his heels. I can’t blame them, it was friday night and they were both off tomorrow.
What changed my mind was the dad’s dirty work clothes like he came directly from work, the younger daughters pained expression and the older kid’s school workbook as she was writing in it while walking. She even bumped into the reception desk she was so focused.
So I took them into an exam room and introducing myself the daughters homework caught my eye as she sat down to work on it “What class is that for?”
“Health Sciences,” she answers without looking up “It’s a basic intro to the medical field, right now we’re working on identifying basic long term illnesses and before that common bacterial and viral infections.”
I nod finding it pretty cool they offered classes like that in highschool “Want a little hands on experience?” I ask disregarding the fact it would make this a lot longer.
She looks up at that and stares a little “Uh, yah that’d be awesome,” she says standing up and I motion for her to take the lead with her little sister up on the table.
She lets a nervous laugh out before asking what the problem is to her little sister. She complains about her ear hurting and tugs at it. The older sister nods and asks her if she’s had any headaches, trouble hearing or balancing and a few other symptoms.
After her little sister answers she turns to me and asks if I can take her temperature and look in her ear. I agree with a grin, knowing she’s doing a pretty good job for a teen with zero medical training.
“Her temperature’s thirty-eight point six and the inside of her ear is red and inflamed,” I tell her, tossing the little earpiece in the trash “Diagnosis and recommended treatment?” I ask sitting at the desk.
She smiles shyly “Ear infection, probably AOM so I’d write a prescription but wait a day or two to see if it gets better on it’s own,”
I nod my head “I concur with your diagnosis and treatment,” I say writing out a prescription then getting the door “Keep studying kid you’re headed places,” I say as she walks by.
She beams and practically skips out the door before I lock it for the night.
I head up stairs into the living room, the smell of salmon hitting me as I walk past the grey couch with it’s peculiar pillows and tables with scattered candles and pictures on them to the kitchen.
Adam stands at the white counter mixing a salad, his back to me as I walk up and snake my arms around him. He chuckles but continues mixing as I rest my head on his shoulder, given I have to go up on my toes to do that. I hum into his ear “They’re doing a Midsummer’s Dream tomorrow at the live theatre,”
“Oh?” he says moving the bowl away before turning to face me, letting his hands trail up my sides then back down to my back “That sounds nice.”
I press against him letting my head rest on his chest, the scent of his cologne making me sigh “We should make it a date, and get dressed up for it,” I say nuzzling further into him “Maybe even go out for dinner,”
“Let’s do that,” he says lightly pushing me so he can look at me “Spaghetti Factory for dinner?” he asks, the timer for the fish going off.
I nod and cross the kitchen to grab plates and cutlery, Adam pulling the fish out of the oven. He plates our meals meticulously for fifteen minets as I watch him, my stomach nagging at me to just grab the plate and eat. I push the thought out of my mind because I know Adam loves doing this, as evident by his grin.
We end up eating in the kitchen, me up on a counter and Adam cross legged on the floor, talking about how Romeo and Juliet could have turned out if Romeo had been in love with Tibalt. The conversation eventually lead to us making dick jokes and our sides hurt from laughing too much we couldn’t breathe.
Coming down from our fit of laughter we catch each other's eyes and smile.
“Follow me,” Adam says softly getting to his feet and slipping his hands in mine. I do as he asks, getting down and letting him lead me into the living room bathed in a dusty orange light from the setting sun. He lets my hands go in the middle of the empty floor and walks over to the old record player we have.
Choosing a disc he places the needle on it and a slow jazz song plays as he wraps his arms around my waist and I reach mine up to wrap around his neck. We sway to the music for what feels like hours and I can’t help but believe I’m the happiest man alive.

Down Once More - RTP Does a Double Show
(or as they say, a two doe shay - so in that light, this review is hella long)
March 16, 2019
It wasn't planned but to take advantage of a discount, I got a second ticket targeting a Saturday matinee show so I could catch Clara. This plan backfired as I already inadvertently caught her the previous week. Being that the Theatre at Solaire is hours away where I am and I don't want to shell out over a grand for Grab, I decided to see the evening show too.
Tumblr media
The fun part about matinees is it's not a rush hour so the travel time is cut significantly. We got to the theatre early enough to take all the photos we want without queueing plus some decent drive thru food. We got balc right seats this time, second row. I certainly missed the prime visibility of orch seats but liked being able to see the whole set.
Clara was on as Christine and I'm delighted to say that as early as a week-gap she's able to put different touches to her Christine so you see a somewhat different interpretation. This one was less afraid and was drawn more to MOTN, that she was able to show a dilemma between the Phantom and Raoul. What I gathered from my first viewing of her was that she's obviously Team Raoul all the way. I mean, sure that is a very valid interpretation but I guess I also like a Christine who is able to show a conflict, some sort of loyalty to her 'teacher' who she didn't just happen to meet yesterday. So there's some joy when she sings AOM.
A notable scene is how she took a while to unmask the Phantom (Jonathan) The instrumentation has already changed and she was still peeling the mask. Jonathan took that extended lull as fuel for anger that Clara cowered in a fetal position as Jonathan, imposing figure that he is, hovered over her. He then punches the floor with his fist and kicked the mandarin hat (which he never got to wore) away. Pretty intense. By STYDI he becomes remorseful as he lamented 'Oh Christine'.
One thing I love about Matt's Raoul is we don't just know he is well to borrow from the Kingsmen: manners maketh man. He isn't only a gentleman at Christine but also to the managers when he makes it a point to excuse himself with a hand gesture when he is switching his attention to Carlotta, Piangi and Girys. And I think one takeaway I got from his Raoul is how he regarded the angel with dismissal and arrogance but slowly come to horror to know that this is a real thing plaguing Christine and that leads him to do what it takes even risk his life. Idk, he's just very real to me. When he does the disaster will be yours, he mounts all his  fiery passion to threaten what he knows is larger than him.
Also the travelator worked and he does jump so whee.
Again I adored the ballerinas during the rehearsals because they're just playful girlfriends, when they get excited at the introduction of the Vicomte, when one of them yawns tiredly and someone gets instruction from the slave master, love love these cute dynamics. Plus they are so nice and supportive of Christine. Meg is just a dear, and I love how Kiruna-Lind nods sheepishly with a “I’ll be a good girl cross my heart” smile at her mom before stomping right off.
I finally looked up that lyric change in Notes, it's now using Broadway's: "Mystified baffled Surete say,we are mystified -"
After the show I accompanied my cousin and sister to stage door, whereupon Meghan came in looking like a rockstar, black ensemble, hat on. She's still somewhat ill but she's going on and it's to be appreciated because that means my evening ticket will finally see the other Christine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My seats these time are way up because I got the cheapest tier. So it was going to be interesting to see Meghan who is probably one of the most petite ladies (she's probably 5 foot and a couple inches). But I immediately see how she compensates for the height with her hands. In Hannibal she grabs on to the nearest ballerina or Meg to seek comfort or to show excitement when the announcement of Vicomte came on, she holds Reyer's hands as he congratulates her. Later in the show she uses them in more heartbreaking ways (to plea for help at Madame Giry at Notes II and the managers after the PONR unmasking but all for naught).
I have to mention this, Meghan does not dance the slave girls track (and later most of the Masquerade track) but this may be because of an injury. Do not take my word for it, but it would make sense why Clara was on instead during the media call. I don't begrudge Meghan too in going off stage especially to protect her health.
BUT when she came on for Think of Me? Holy. Smokes. THAT GLORIOUS VOICE. Where did that come from such a tiny frame? It's so big and whole and powerful and she sings and extends the cadenza effortlessly. You'll know this is opera-trained.
My take with her Christine is that she takes on  Meghan's personality, especially in Act I where she is bubbly and friendly with the ballerinas and when she tries to explain to Raoul that the angel of music is very strict (she does it sheepishly). Listening to her radio interviews it makes sense how it sometimes blurs who Meghan is and who Christine is.
She also mentioned how she and the character are utterly consumed by music, and she shows it not just as a trance state but also in a Sarah Brightmanesque possessed state. I want to take a closer look at this because from afar there's a danger of looking like she's doing nothing when she's been doing big gestures with her hands earlier. So it looks like on and off. But maybe up close it's possible she communicates more.
Her strength and her strongest weapon is undoubtedly that voice, because with it she isn't afraid to make the songs her own, to manipulate them as the scene demands for it and as she needs it. Her vocal control is incredible. She is able to communicate fear, panic and passion effortlessly because of that malleable voice that she need not stay the course of the song but give it her interpretation ("in that, <i>strange</i>. sweet. sound.") She could cry and scream in song if that makes sense? I just looooooove listening to her sing and there are just so much dimensions in her interpretation that way. And there's even more to it when she performs with her cast mates.
Okay this brings me to the next part of the review. I saw Jonathan earlier with Clara and it went without a hitch so to speak. In figure-skating speak he landed those lutz. The evening, told a different story. When he couldn't extend his BE in MOTN I started to get worried.
The figure-skating analogy will become very clear towards the rest of the performance as I waited in bated anticipation how he'll try to land his jumps. This was me the whole time basically.
Tumblr media
He started stumbling losing breath and ending in rasps towards the end of Act I. Obviously this is not his norm, I've seen him 4 times after all, including the earlier matinee. There was something wrong. But the question now is what he'll do in the vocally demanding AND fast-paced Act II full of quadruple jumps?
Well Jonathan had to do a series of quick decisions, there were words he had to speak more softly, keys that he had to changed and lyrics recited so he can reserve his strength and give them to the money makers. But all in all? Led to a beautiful heart-wrenching performance as he took the show in One Emotional Ride I've never witnessed before. And I believe the person sustaining him, receiving this acting and spinning it to gold? Meghan. There was teamwork happening during the Final Lair as both characters were giving one fiery performance and receiving it, enhancing it, supporting another by giving so much to work with. Meghan comes at you at Final Lair with such fervor. There was a part where she rips the veil so angrily the hair mic went POOF but this is the kind of energy she comes at Jonathan. I don't know if I've seen a Final Lair come like a frenzied hurricane of adrenaline, distress and fury. There were a lot of tears on that stage. Jonathan’s limitations worked for him in the end especially in conveying the anguish of the character. In this way, the show finished in a heart-wrenching note AND thunderous applause.
Oh when Meghan returned the ring, the Phantom clung to her hand and they remained that way for a bit, until Meghan regretably retracted the outstretched arm and left.
So. Um, wow. It was a hell of a ride, and I have to say, guiltily, that I liked how unpredictable it was. That was just pure raw stage energy and thespians are olympians too.
I definitely need to see more of these two before the show closes in close to 2 weeks (cue weeps).
If you got as far as this um, thank you. You are very patient. I have no reward but here's me wearing the PHwhdjfis hoodie

Update!
Hello everyone, i havent been active for the past few days and ive noticed that, i dont want to be inactive but life happens and ive been rather busy for the past few days. Theres been a lot happening and this is just a small post saying it all!
I bought a brand new desk, since i didnt have one before and studying long hours without one is hell; i decided to go out and get one. Well not really, i ordered one online. Its going to take a while to get here but thats okay!
I also bought a lot of atationary for my desk that has already arrived so its just sitting in a box in the corner all lonely.
I decided on what to pursue as a career! Of course ideas and interests change but i feel extremely confident in this one. 'This one' being psychology! And as if fate put it there, i have been already doing pre requisite corses for the degree!
Because of this interest i went out and bought a book on psychology for a bit of a head start in what to expect. I cant remember what its called but it was recommended to me, once it arrives ill be sure to post a picture and keep you guys in track with it just in case you too want to study psychology and need a starting point.
Also, i know ive been studying hard lately and i have been flying through course workout. This hard work needed some type of reward (not really). So i went out and bought a small crafty project i have always been dying to get into and that is sculpting! I will probably be terrible at it at first but ill get there. I bought all the needs for it and im thinking of making a doll for my first small project!
I bought a white board! And thats probably the smartest thing i have done yet, i underestimated just how easier it would be to work with one and now i have a mind map sketched out on it for an upcoming essay.
Alongside the whiteboard i finally got around to drawing up an academic calender of this semester. Because i juggle a few classes its good to have a visual on 'what am i doing tomorrow?' Something i highly recommend on doing!
So there you have it guys, thats what ive gotten up to in the past few days. Oh! And this picture is a book recommendation, i said in my last post ill start throwing aome recommendations up and here it is. Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. I cannot fathom and express just how great his writing is! He is extremely descriptive to the point you feel like you are there. I highly recommend giving this a read if you havent already!

the criticism levelled towards AoM was pretty fuckin consistent so if V have any sense -- which ill assume they do, theyre a company that wants to make money after all -- theyre going to have to take some of that on board or its going to really fuck up their reputation. SRIV did good (but not as good as SR3) but GOoH was a critical flop and AoM was critically and financially disappointing. theyve been constantly and consistently talking about how GOoH led to a kind of split universe where theres multiple endings they could follow, one of which being AoM. i dont think theyd be so insistent on the idea they could more than one thing with the franchise if they didnt intend on doing multiple, different things with the franchise.
V havent had a real banger release since 2013 and with AoM absolutely not being a successful enough vehicle on its own terms to franchise, theres a lot of pressure on them to come out with something good right now. im very sure the next game they release is gonna be a Saints Row game because they need to remind people what they loved about the franchise, but what exactly it is i cant say. AoM relied a lot on selling itself by having familiar fan favourites, but that didnt actually work and at this point my gut instinct is that theyre probably not going to try that again. i would not be surprised if the next Saints Row game was a complete hard reset with an entirely new cast in a totally new location.
i also dont think its going to have a huge number of super powers and shit because again, they just did that, and it didnt work. it kind of worked once but they havent been able to recapture that magic and it would foolish to keep pushing it when it hasnt been working out.
so yeah. i think its way too early to make any solid guesses about what we’re getting, but my instinct atm is that V are going to hard swerve away from AoM because that direction isnt working out. they have to listen to critics and they have to listen to fans. i dont know how much impact the Nordic buyout is going to have, if any, but we’ll see. but V are going to be in trouble if they dont mix things up and i think they know it.

Right, Scott Stossel, welcome to the show.
Scott Stossel: Thanks so much for having me.
Brett McKay: You wrote a book, My Age Of Anxiety, which is a cultural history, scientific history of nervousnes. Which is something a lot more Americans are struggling with, they’re reporting struggling with. But not only is this a history, it’s a narrative of your own struggle with anxiety throughout your life. Let’s start there. How long have you been struggling and dealing with anxiety?
Scott Stossel: Its candidly been pretty much a lifelong struggle from a very young age. The earliest I can recollect, I had terrible acute separation anxiety when I was a little kid. Any time I was away from my parents, I was convinced that they were dead or died in a automobile accident or that they were actually robots and I was part of some experiment. By the time I got to school, I would have anxious stomach aches and anxious headaches and I would always end up in the nurse’s office. I would fret endlessly about all kinds of things.
So, genuinely from the time I was … My earliest memories, I remember being worried about things. I have, I think a temperamental propensity towards nervousnes and worry that showed itself at a very, very young age.
Brett McKay: Did it manifest itself differently over the years as you got older.
Scott Stossel: Yeah, the separation anxiety and that’s a classic early manifestation of people who grew up to develop what you clinically called anxiety ailments. But over time, I developed specific phobiums; dread of heights, anxiety of enclosed spaces, fear of cheese and anxiety of vomiting, dread of flying, which was a fairly acute one that still plagues me today.
I also, as I get older, started having panic attacks, which anyone who’s experienced them knows are often when they recur with any frequency over a given period, that becomes clinically known as panic disorder. I had that. When I got to middle school and high school, I had all kinds of social anxiety where I worry about interacting with other people, particularly performing in public. I was in the school play in sixth grade, it was humiliating, I had to walk off stage because I lost the ability to speak.
And then I carried all that with me into adulthood, basically these anxieties were regrettably added if not substituting. I wasn’t switching one for the other. Just every time I got a new anxiety, I would just add that to the ones I already had. By the time I got to high school and then young adulthood, I was not all the time but pretty constantly struggling with some collection of anxieties about going to school, traveling, getting sick, dealing with other people.
The strain of dealing with that would lead to depression. It was a fairly toxic stew of negative feelings I was dealing with by the time I was a young adult.
Brett McKay: Right, one two punch. I imagine, we’ll talk about you’re still working with this stuff today. But you’re a writer for The Atlantic. You’re a public figure. Is it still something you struggle with? The fact that “youve got to” do speaking involvements or things like that, is that something you have to manage as well?
Scott Stossel: It is. I’m what they call … I’m a high functioning person with nervousnes ailment. There’s some people who get so anxious that they’re what’s called agoraphobia, where their panic disorder gets so bad that the range of things they can do gets smaller and smaller. Eventually, they are people who are confined to their houses or even be restricted to one room in their house and can’t do anything for years at a time.
I’ve had periods like that, fortunately, short periods where I could feel the world closing in on me. But for the best part, with a combination of medication, other kinds of therapy, and just force of will sometimes, mostly managed to live a normal life and have a career.
There are ways in which, and I talk about this in the book in which anxiety has its benefits or at least it’s connected to temperamental traits that are good. If you’re super anxious about things, you’re kind of hyper vigilant, which builds you good at scanning the environment and being aware of your social situations or being able to read social cues. People with social nervousnes probably over read them, but it can be a useful skill. Your worrying a lot can be debilitating if it’s excessive, but it also helps you to plan for different eventualities. You can look ahead.
I think that only the struggles I’ve had with my mental health have stimulated me more empathetic towards other people have those conflicts and even to people who don’t have those conflicts. I think it helps with communication. There are a lot of ways in which even though I dislike my anxiety when it’s flaring up, it’s probably propelled me along, its stimulated me conscientious because I’m afraid of screwing up, I’m afraid of appear bad. That becomes a motivator.
A lot of times I feel like I’m patched together or scarcely holding it together because my anxiety is so bad or, I’m pharmaceutically armored against my anxiety. That’s how I’ve struggled through, and I still struggle with it today a lot. We can talk about that more later if you want. But I’ve been fortunate enough to manage to, mostly be a productive member of society.
Brett McKay: Well, this volume came out 2014. It’s been five years. You’re seeing all these reports come out week after week about how Americans, especially young Americans and young Westerners in general, are increasingly feeling like they’re anxious or they’re suffering from anxiety. What are the numbers? How many Americans do we know are reporting being anxious?
Scott Stossel: They’re really high. There was a study a couple, before my volume came out, some years ago that talked about how the average level of nervousnes for a typical high school student now self-rated report on anxiety is the same as it was for inpatient psychiatric patients in the 1950 s. Basically, the average kid today is as anxious and neurotic and miserable as people who are in psychiatric hospitals a couple of generations ago. Then there’s all kinds of other statistics that just show levels of stress, worry, nervousnes, nervousnes disorder diagnosis, are much, much higher in young people pretty much across all Western countries. Particularly, there’s a lot of data about Europe and the United States.
In the US, I suppose, there’s so much data that this is something real. I guess part of it is our definitions of what constitutes a clinical anxiety ailment have expanded and become a little bit more elastic. Probably can be know more about these disorders so people now can identify them partly because you’ve got now medications that have been approved to treat them. You’ve got the marketing imperatives of the narcotic companies. The more broadly you can define an nervousnes ailment, the more people you have that you’re able to prescribe it to.
Partly, this is inflation of a diagnostic category. I think in any society, there’s some complement of people who will be anxious under many circumstances. But I also think that there are a lot of factors about the culture in the society right now that are driving people, and especially young people to be more anxious. At the largest societal level, we’re in a long period really going all the way back to the dawn of the industrial revolution, but accelerating now in the internet age, of simply rapid alter, economic dislocation, all forms of transitions. There’s merely a pace of life because of the internet. The route people select themselves into tribes, set the pressure to create your own personal brand on the internet. There’s just so many countervailing pressures that confound young person about what their identity is.
In centuries past, you were born into your role. Your family had a status in the tribe or in the medieval village you lived in or even in your farm village in the 19 th century America. Now, who are you? You can choose your gender, you can choose your sexual preference, you can choose the groups you affiliate with socially. All this creates a lot of stress. And then the last factor I was just saying, is just there’s been a lot written about this, particular people in the millennial generation and younger, there’s so much helicopter parenting. Your mothers are super involved and driven and trying to make their kids succeed.
But the combination of overprotectiveness and pressure to achieve is really toxic, because on the one hand, these kids feel all this pressure to succeed and do better than their parents and get into good colleges or do whatever. At the same time, the parents are doing things for them that parents of previous generations wouldn’t. It robs them of their impression of freedom and resilience. It’s genuinely an epidemic thing. I’ve talked to a lot of psychiatrists both for the book but then also people I’ve come to know who are now friends who are psychiatrists, who are therapists and they see this as merely an epidemic phenomenon. All those factors combined to create soaring levels of anxiety.
Brett McKay: Let’s talk, you mentioned there’s a cultural component to anxiety. It’s not that anxiety is a culture construct. That it exists, it rooted in biology, but the culture has an influence. For example, the diagnostic of anxiety ailment didn’t exist 35 years ago. I’m older than that, I’m 37. How old am I? 36. I forget how old … At some point you stop counting how old you are.
Scott Stossel: That’s right, because of a defense mechanism.
Brett McKay: Right? But that doesn’t mean that people weren’t anxious. What did we call anxiety say like 2,000 years ago, or 100 years ago or even 50 years ago?
Scott Stossel: Good question. Its been called all different things. Obviously, the emotion that we feel, or the situate of emotional and physical experiences “youve got in” your body when you are feeling what we now call anxiety, humans have experienced since they were humen. What did they call it in[ inaudible] days when they were cavemen? They didn’t have a concept of anxiety, but when they went out of the cave and they were worried about getting eaten by a saber tooth tiger, their own problems would sweat, their hair would stand on end, their stomaches would hurt. That is anxiety.
Even in animals, the fight or flight response is a sort of evolutionary program instinct to help keep species alive. What we call anxiety today emanates from that deeply rooted evolutionary, biological reality. But over the years different cultures have and science has called it all kinds of different things. For many years, the Renaissance, they would group what we now call anxiety and depression together under melancholy. If you suffer from what, you’re worried about things, or you were depressed, your were called melancholy.
Once you get into the 19 th century, in Europe and America, they would call it asthenia. It was meant to simply a set of traits that was a combination of physical things. It could be like dizziness, sweats, gastrointestinal problems and emotional things; phobias, worry, basically could encompass anything because your nervousness, you experience it in your brain, but it has impact throughout your body.
Getting into the Freudian age, Freud became very influential through the 20 th century, particularly into the mid-2 0th century. He talked about what we today call anxiety as neurosis. He had a different hypothesi of what caused it; childhood sex, repressed sexual desire, conflicts with your mothers, the edible complex, which a lot of which has been debunked now. But as a culture idiom, the idea of neuroses became very prominent in the culture. That was through World War II, up until 1980 when the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, which is the Bible of the psychiatric profession, they redefined the neurosis as anxiety.
Technically, anxiety disorders didn’t exist when you were born and they didn’t exist when I was a little kid. I’m 49 now. For the first 10 years of my life when I was starting to get taken to psychiatrists, they would say I have childhood neurosis or something like that. It’s now been redefined as anxiety. The labels we put on this do inflect how we think about them and how we treat them. But it is the same underlying define of you and I or if I think of myself, I would be feeling the same set of unpleasant thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, whatever age I was in, and whatever we choose to call it. Just now we classify them as nervousnes disorders.
Brett McKay: Right? The route we describe and the way we talk about it has changed. For example, within the Renaissance, melancholia, yeah, you were considered depressed and anxious. But it was romantic too. It was like, well, you’re simply ponderous, romantic person who’s thinking about big believes. It was a positive spin on it. But then Freud saying, “No, neurosis is bad. We got to solve your neurosis by sitting on a couch and talking to a therapist over and over again until you solve it.”
There’s that swinging backward and forward. Yeah, there’s some good and bad, but then it’s all bad.
Scott Stossel: Yeah. There’s often been, you referenced the Renaissance era, this sense that having melancholy is attached to having an artistic or refined or sophisticated sensibility. It was actually seemed to be a desirable trait. If you were melancholic, it meant you were creative and artistic and must be very smart. Sometimes, there are, and this is contested among actual experts about whether is there a link between mental illness of various kinds, including nervousnes and depression and ingenuity. So many famous writers, for instance, and artists have had very prominent psychiatric ailments or alcoholism or things like that. Is there us-led coalition forces between the things that stimulate you anxious and depressed and the things that give you an artistic sensibility?
Maybe there’s, like I say, different people dispute that. You’re right, that the culture interpreting we put on anxiety alters. One thing in particular, as a man, that this has been changed recently, but there’s a lot of shame associated with is anxiety cowardice? And cowardice is shameful. There’s almost no worse epithet you can swing at a human than being a coward or whatever.
But suppressing this stuff or not treating it can be very dangerous. Instead of going to a therapist, a lot of people turn to alcohol or narcotics and basically try to manage their nervousnes in very unhealthy routes, that can be quite dangerous.
Brett McKay: We’ll get into that a bit more because I’d like to talk about stuff like Navy SEALS and neuro peptide wide and whatever. But talking about the current diagnosis of anxiety, I thought it was interesting, you explore the DSM and how they came up with it. We talked about some other people and we talked about depression. How a lot of this stuff, it’s ad hoc. There was just threw spaghetti at the wall, or sometimes there’s dinners, and they’re like, “Well, here’s the five things that we think that you can use to diagnose anxiety.” It often seems very arbitrary sometimes.
Scott Stossel: It’s often completely arbitrary. I was fascinated when doing research for this book and hearing some of these there is talk. The people who did a previous edition of the DSM, every 10 or 20, 30 years, they reissue a new one. When they introduced all the anxiety disorders for the first time, that was in 1980, with the DSM three, the third edition. Yeah, I would hear from people who are part of the committee that came up with the categories. They’d be sitting around and they would have come up with a definition for panic disorder. But even that was arbitrary. They’d say, “Well, it’s if you have six … ” I’m trying to remember. If you have X number of panic attacks over a period of six months, well, then you have panic disorder. Well, why did they choice six months instead of a year or two months? And why X number of panic attacks instead of why?
The more interesting one was then they were talking about, well, we’ve got all these different kinds of anxieties categorized into discrete disorders. You’ve got phobias, which is fear of specific things, you’ve get social anxiety, which is fear of social situations. We’ve got panic disorder, which is panic attacks. We’ve got OCD, which is obsessive compulsive ailment. They’re at this dinner, they’re like, well, what about our colleague Joe? He’s just generally anxious. They’re like, oh, well, let’s come up with something called generalized anxiety disorder.
They was also expressed that into the third edition of the DSM. Then once it exists as a real category, then researchers and drug companies start to treat it as a real thing. And they do analyzes based on the sets of symptoms that you’re supposed to have, to be characterized with that cancer. It starts to become certified into you’re testing for a thing that you made up in the first place.
Again , not that the underlying suffering is not real and not there, but is generalized anxiety disorder truly its own separate ailment, or is it, as some people now think, merely a subset of depression, or depression with anxiety, or people who are depressed often worry a lot and get sucked up into their head? Well, that’s what people with generalized anxiety disorder do. They simply worry continuously and spin in circles in their head.
Being very anxious can be depressing. No wonder that nervousnes and depression are so often co-occur in people. And then many people with depression experience nervousnes. It’s unclear how these things actually … In the DSM, they’re very neatly cleaved from one another. This disorder is distinct from that disorder. A lot of people are now starting to think maybe, especially as they start to look at the neuroscience of this, which is still in early stages, but perhaps this is all variants of the same thing. I imagine, 100 years from now, when scientists look back, they may think that our categorizations of these things are pretty crude, but they’re very good we have right now.
Brett McKay: It’s like when we think about how people talk about[ inaudible] that was various kinds of silly.
Scott Stossel: Or hysteria. Hysteria was particularly for women. But there was some … What was that? Was that a culture phenomenon? Was it a medical phenomenon? It was both, and these things always intersect. That’s always interesting to me, when you have a real biological thing that gets interpreted culturally, that’s fascinating and really does alteration how we treat and think about people who have these disorders.
Brett McKay: I imagine that it can cause a lot of confusion and annoyance for people struggling with it. They’re going to help and they’re getting inconsistent diagnosis from different … One therapist is like, well, you have this, but not this to this. It’s like, well, what am I? What am I supposed to be doing with what I … How much to go after what I have?
Scott Stossel: Yeah, when my book came out, I had a lot of people say that or versions of that, that they struggled a lot. But in general, I would say, most therapists, there’s a lot of agreement, and it may change, but there are certain things that there’s emerging data about what works for all these things, or many of these things. For instance, there’s a sort of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy, which is basically a combination of helping people to change their guess to build them less maladaptive. Break the cycle of negative thinking and reality test a better route. People are worried about things who have generalized anxiety disorder, they always ensure the worst case scenario. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you restructure your way of thinking so you can see things in a more realistic way. And then help you change your behavior and uncovering yourself to the things, if you have anxiety, uncovering yourself to the things you’re afraid to decondition you from the fear.
There’s a lot of evidence over now, more than a decade, that that kind of therapy can work for all kinds of anxiety disorder, from obsessive compulsive disorder, for depression. There are things that work. There are certain medications. Medication, when we talk about that, that’s all complex to where my sense is, your drugs can work, but there is a great mystery about how they run, when they work, who they work for, what the downsides are. But there are some studies and a lot of evidence to suggest that for some people, certain medications can help them with their anxiety and depression.
Even though we’re still groping around for proper definitions and everything is categories and are messy. There are things that are generally believed to work.
Brett McKay: We’ll talk about medications, that’s interesting as well. Again, it’s like how we define and diagnose anxiety. A plenty of the drug developed were very ad hoc, and we’ll talk about it, because it’s really interesting as well. But let’s talk about, what causes anxiety? Because some people will look at it, “Well, it’s like a choice. You can only snap out of it. Get yourself together.” But there’s also evidence that says no, there’s a genetic component to it.” What’s going on? What causes anxiety?
Scott Stossel: There are multiple causes. But there’s tons of proof, there’s a strong genetic component. Only about everybody has some adaptive predisposition to experience, have a fight or flight response to have a fear response. But there are some people, who because of their genes, are born with what psychologists call it, temperament that is more highly reactive.
It’s literally, that their DNA and codes for a physiology that is more high reactive. Those people … You can see it in newborns. You can often tell the ones that are going to grow up to have anxiety ailments because they have more exaggerated, what’s called startle responses. If you make a loud noise or flashing a light at them, you can see their heart rate increases more, or they sweat more, they have electric conductance in their skin is greater. It literally is, it’s something that you can’t control it, it’s profoundly, profoundly wired in and scientists are starting to look at the various clusters of genes that lead to that.
Some people are just born with a ready predisposition to be anxious. But then on top of that, there’s the environmental factor. There’s also tons of evidence that, and this is where Freud was wrong, early childhood experiences have a profound impact on your psychology and your mental resilience, psychological resilience for the rest of your life.
So, people, kids, and adults who are exposed to trauma, it changes your brain chemistry and even your brain structure in such a way that this is what PTSD is. You’re now much more prone to anxiety and depression, panic attack. It’s a gene environment interaction. There are some people who are born with such an anxious predisposition that even small stressors are going to send them into spiraling nervousnes or depression and stimulate them develop a disorder. There are other people who are going to be much more resistant to it, but even those people, most of them, or many of them anyway, if exposed to enough trauma; war or something horrific in childhood will develop the elements of an anxiety disorder.
Then overlaid on top of that, as we were talking about earlier, there are the cultural and social level stuff, are there certain cultures or periods of history that are more anxiety make than others? I guess the evidence suggests that there are. But I suppose the strongest contributor by far is your jeans. Some people only have the calamity to be born highly anxious, and some people who are born more serene. But as with all human traits, then surrounding plays a role too.
Brett McKay: Yeah, well, you talked about even your own family anxiety seems to run in your family.
Scott Stossel: Yeah. When I was both in my therapy, but as I was researching the book, I was trying to figure out, well, what is the source of my own nervousnes? My mom, super high warrior, had a lot of phobias, which I got from her, that I get them from her by watching her because I learned them from her from environmental or is it genetically encoded. Then her parents both had worrying personality traits. Her grandfather, my great grandpa, had fought awfully with what they then called anxiety neurosis. Was institutionalized in psychiatric hospitals many times.
Again, he had a very successful career. Was a smart, accomplished guy, but that would just get wholly incapacitated by his anxiety, would have to go to the mental hospital and get electroshock therapy to get his brain reset. I’ve got other relatives who struggle with this. Studies show that once you have some number of anxious people in a family, you’ll find many many more. Is that transmitted by environment? Did I learn it from my mom, from watching my mama, from watching my grandparents? Maybe, or was it transmitted through my genes? Well, probably that too and you can never totally disentangle them.
Brett McKay: Well, you’re going back to that notion that you brought up that for men anxiety can be like a slap in the face because if you have it, you’re a coward. But we were talking about Navy SEALs. Some people are born with a predisposition to be very anxious, but some are born like they’re just water off a duck’s back. Navy SEALS, they’ve done research on them where they found they actually have a genetic predisposition to be hyper resilient, even in super stressful situations.
Scott Stossel: Exactly. I was fascinated by that analyse. Navy SEALs are a really interesting study because they’re such extreme human specimen. To get to the point where you get through Navy SEAL training, it’s like you must be incredibly physically fit. Then they put you through these physical adversities, like sleep deprivation and incredible hardship.
The physical component is hard enough, but these guys, they’re able to withstand almost a form of torture, that would cause me or many other people to only break down. There’s a guy at Yale who was studying, what is it that stimulates these guys so resilient. He would take, I think it was from their blood samples, measuring different neurotransmitters in their brain. He found that the Navy SEALs who succeeded in do the Navy SEAL training, had unusually high levels of something called neuro peptide Y. Basically, if you have a high level of … They could actually predict in advance to try to determine cause and effect. Finishing the course gives you a boost of confidence or something that causes your neuro peptide Y to rise or do you have a natural baseline level of it?
When they looked at these people in advance, they could nearly predict how they would do on the test by their levels of neuro peptide Y in advance. And there are other studies that show that neuro peptide Y, your levels of that are genetically ascertained, or at the least partly genetically ascertained. Which to me is powerful evidence that your level of psychological resilience is conferred by your genes, which allows you to produce this neurotransmitter that builds you unusually psychologically resilient. But what psychologists are now truly interested in studying and in the military too is, how can you cultivate this in non-genetic routes? Many of us would benefit from being more resilient?
There things that we can do through therapy or through life experiences that boost our levels of neuro peptide Y, or that create the psychological structures in our head that are associated with neuro peptide Y and that induce us resilient and resistant to anxiety, traumatic stress, that kind of thing. It’s truly promising region of research. It’s basically focusing on the people who are the least anxious and figure out, how can we use what they have going for them both in terms of how they think and what’s in their brain to treat people who are particularly non-resilient or highly anxious?
Brett McKay: Well, let’s talk about the history of treating anxiety. You mentioned earlier, right now, there’s a lot of promising research, and studies have shown that cognitive behavior therapy can help mitigate or help people manage their anxiety. But besides that, what are some of the other routes as far as therapy goes, and we’ve used to try to treat anxiety disorders?
Scott Stossel: Well, so these days, there’s cognitive behavioral therapy. There’s more traditional talk therapy. CBT is a form of talk therapy. Bu[ inaudible] when “youre thinking about” from the movies, which is just talking to a psychiatrist, or psychologist or a social worker, or a therapist or some other kind of psychodynamic therapy that’s called. There’s a lot of evidence that simply, talking to someone who listens sympathetically to your problems, has some training, both helping you solve basic life challenges, but also helping you resolve childhood issues. There’s some evidence that that works.
Then there’s medication. Going back, really millennia, if you read the ancient Greeks or even Hippocrates, the most original, most famous doctor in history, talks about how wine can treat nervousnes. For years people have been using alcohol and opium and things like that to medicate anxiety.
Just going back 100 and some years, there have been waves of different things that have been used to treat particular anxiety and then anxiety and depression. Way back at the turn of the 20 th century, you had barbiturates and other sedatives that were used to treat anxiety. Then around mid-century, you had the sunrise of what are called the benzodiazepines. That’s valium and librium and these days you have Klonopin, Xanax,[ inaudible] even Ambien that work on your define of neuro transmitters in your brain called GABA that basically soothes your brain down. That can be very effective in treating anxiety, but very dangerous too in terms of it’s addictive potential and the tendency to sort habit and dependency.
For depression, there have been different waves of drugs. There was the wave of what they called the tricyclic antidepressants. Tricyclic describes the structure of the molecule. These were things like[ inaudible 00:30: 18 ]. Then in the ’8 0s, you had the first, what’s called the SSRI, Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors. The first one and most famous one is Prozac. But these days you got Prozac and Paxil, and Zoloft and[ inaudible] and Lexapro and a whole bunch of others in that category, and related ones too that affect, serotonin and norepinephrine.
Basically, all these drugs work on different sets of neuro transmitters to augment their levels in the brain in ways that we still don’t fully understand how they run, but seemed to have some efficacy in reducing anxiety and reducing depression. I’ve taken a lot of these drugs myself, and some of them seem to work and some of them don’t. Some of them have terrible side effects.
The depressing thing about a lot of this is that, a lot of these doesn’t work. It takes a lot of trial and error. Therapy can be effective, and I would encourage anyone who’s suffering with these things to seek out treatment, because it can be a lifesaver. But it can sometimes takes a few tries to find a therapist that you like, or medication that works. If you look at the long term evidence, genuinely, it’s like a third to a half or something of any treatment works. It’s not always clear why the thing that’s working is working.
That’s why CBT has the best evidence in its favor, and it also has in its favor, since it’s not a drug, it’s not addictive, it’s not dependency forming, and ideally, you can learn the skills from CBT and take them with you through your life, maintain practicing them unlike if you’re on a drug and it runs, what happens if you go off the narcotic? Sometimes you can have withdrawal issues.
Brett McKay: I think you brought up an interesting point that anxiety sounds like it’s something that you’re never going to be cured of it. You’re always going to have to simply manage it for most of your life.
Scott Stossel: I would love to be able to be cured of it. Some of the time with 10% of my brain hope to achieve like complete composure. Not that there won’t be things that scare me or that I worry about legitimately, but it’s not something that besets me. I suppose, some people they get really … The one thing I didn’t mention is mindfulness practice. These days, there’s tons of evidence that various meditation skills and practices and other forms of mindfulness genuinely can help confer the kind of resiliency and soothe that say neuro peptide Y does in these Navy SEALs.
In my therapy, I’ve tried a combination of CBT with trying to do meditation stuff. I think it is, and you’re not cured, you’re always going to have your underlying genetics. If you’re a high reactive person, someone who’s prone to be nervous about things, that’s probably always going to be the case. But you can reduce the amount of it, and as “youre telling”, you can learn to manage it with different sets of abilities for whatever kind of therapy you’re utilizing, or to manage it with medication or to adjust your lifestyle.
Sometimes, if you’re anxious or depressed, that’s your body and your brain telling you something’s not right in your life and you need to build some alters, and sometimes having a better lifestyle. All this obvious cliched stuff that people tell you is true. It’s really important to get sleep. For me, if I’m under sleep, my nervousnes goes through the roof. It’s for me also, and tons of studies support this, regular workout. These are basic things that don’t expensed anything, you don’t need insurance for. But in modern life, it’s sometimes hard to work out regularly, it’s hard to get a good night’s sleep when you’ve got deadlines.
All these things, if you do them all, you can actually minimize the effect that nervousnes has on your life. There’s always “re going to be”, for me, there’s things that erupt that cause my nervousnes to spike. But when I’m doing well, I can both have those spikes be fewer and farther between and also when they happen, manage them better and not have them abruptly spiraling off the railway or over medicating myself. It’s a long winded route of saying yes. If one can learn to manage them and if you could do that, then you can live a fairly fulfilling and rewarding life that’s not the constant sadnes that anxiety can sometimes be.
Brett McKay: Right. I think that’s hopeful. Because there’s a strong genetic component to nervousnes. People who have that problem and they’re listening is like well, crap, I’m hosed. That could be the approach or it could be like well, okay this is the thing, I got to work with it. It’s not great, but I can manage. There’s things I can do.
Scott Stossel: Yeah. I’ve ever talked to my therapist when I was learning about my great grandfather and all the terrible difficulties that he had had, and then multiple hospitalizations. I was thinking, God, he reminds me so much of myself, and I have his genes, and I’m doomed to this. My therapist was like, “First of all, he’s your great grandpa. You have a tiny fraction of his genes. And second of all, there’s medications that we have now that he didn’t have access to that can help you. There’s simply lots of stuff that you can do. Yes, genetics is powerful, but you’re not doomed to your genetic fate. We can learn to cultivate resilience.”
A lot of the therapies that are effective, like I say, behavioral therapy just in general, facing your anxieties. It’s easy for me to say this, and sometimes hard for me to do. But if you have specific phobiums, like anxiety of flying or anxiety of public speaking, the more you do it, the easier it gets. That’s a simple lesson, but it’s true. For me, sometimes those things can be so anxiety produce that I can’t do them, and then I feel like it’s a setback and my nervousnes gets worse. But what my therapist is always telling me, is get up, persist, do it again, and you will get better.
Brett McKay: Right, exposure therapy, I think that-
Scott Stossel: Exposure therapy, exactly. If you have a fear of heights, they’ll take you up on higher and higher houses. Sometimes these therapies sound kind of extreme. If you have severe claustrophobia, there’s actually therapists who will put you in a coffin. You have horrible nervousnes but then you just wait it out and you realize I didn’t die. I’m okay, I can manage it. It was just a really unpleasant emotion.
For people with flying phobia, there are pilots who will take you up. A plenty of airports have programs where you can go and get strolled around the plane by a pilot, explains how the whole thing works, and basically little by little, expose yourself, sit in the plane and then go on a short plane ride. Eventually, hopefully you can be flying to Europe without being completely miserable, as I’ve sometimes been on international flights.
Brett McKay: I think that’s an important point for parents who might have infants who are hyper sensitive or super anxious. Oftentimes, when you’re a mother, you’re like, “Well, I simply don’t want my child to freak out. So, I’ll only avoid the thing that causes them lots of anxiety gets them worked up. Rather, the better approach might be well, just slowly introduce that thing over and over again so they don’t get scared and they’re not scared or it doesn’t worry them anymore.
Scott Stossel: That’s absolutely right. I think that’s really important. What I’m about to say may sound paradoxical, but it’s not. If you think that there’s all kinds of evidence that suggest that if you think your kid might be developing unusual level of nervousnes, it could be a clinical level of nervousnes. The proof says, the earlier you can get help and get them therapy, the better outcome they’ll have, the less likely they’ll be to suffer anxiety ailments as an adult.
Early interventions to keep, but early intervention doesn’t mean sparing them from nervousnes. What virtually any therapist today would tell you is actually, and this is the antidote to helicopter parenting, don’t try to do everything for your kids. Don’t try to spare them the unpleasant experience or the thing that’s stimulating them nervous in particular, if it’s being anxious about going to school. I know how hard that is, both having been a very anxious child and now being a parent who has anxious children, it’s incredibly painful and hard to watch your child suffering and feeling nervous. Everything in my body wants to be, I only want to take him out of that situation so he’s not nervous.
But every therapist I’ve ever seen says, “No , no, you have to let them, within reason, experience the anxiety and learn that they can overcome it and that’s how they develop resilience. Don’t do it for them. That’s how you’ll helicopter your parent, your kid into being a helpless, neurotic 22 year old who can’t construct his own dinner.
Brett McKay: Right. What’s the nation of your nervousnes today? You’ve said you’re do cognitive behavioral therapy, some mindfulness meditation. Are you taking medication?
Scott Stossel: I am. I’m still real bad at the mindfulness. I think it’s one of these catch 22 s that the people who benefit from mindfulness and yoga and that kind of thing, meditation the most are the ones who are worst at it, because my thoughts are always racing, I have a hard time sitting still. But I’m trying that, doing CBT with a really good therapist, and that’s helped doing exposure therapy, which is really unpleasant. But I suppose does help, and then yeah, I am currently on Lexapro, which is one of these SSRI medications.
Then I take a medication called gabapentin, which was originally an anti-seizure medication, and a drug for pain, but has shown some effectiveness in treating anxiety. And then, I used to take a lot of benzodiazepines. I’ve now tried not to. They work incredibly well for me. For me, that was always my magic bullet. I knew I could always survive if could have access to enough Xanax.
The problem is it ran a little too well. The peril is, I started to become too dependent on it. The more of it you take, the more you need to take in order to get the same effect, and it can be very dangerous. People become dependent on it. I’m trying not to use that now. It was pretty widely prescribed by both psychiatrists and just-
Brett McKay: Just family doctors.
Scott Stossel: Just family doctors because it is so effective. But there’s also a pretty big school of thought out there that’s like, they truly shouldn’t be prescribing it so widely because it can be, in certain people, very addictive and dependency forming.
Brett McKay: I imagine, in all you’re doing things like getting enough sleep, exercising, managing stress, reducing that when you can, et cetera.
Scott Stossel: Yeah. I don’t know why, but for me, getting regular exert it’s like night and day. My wife can even tell if at the end of the day I’m on the phone, she’ll be like, “Why don’t you go work out.” I’m like, “Why? ” She’s like, “I can just tell in your voice that you haven’t.” It’s like my personality changes somehow. You don’t always feel like working out, there are some people who simply don’t exercise at all. But for me, forcing myself to work out even when I don’t keep feeling it, is just so good for my state of mind and good for my physical health as well. That’s true for just about everyone.
Brett McKay: Right. I imagine, that there’s someone’s listening to this podcast, they’re struggling with anxiety, best advice, go get help, go talk to somebody. There’s things you can do to help manage it. You have a flourishing productive life. Like yourself, like you said, you’ve fought with this your entire life, but you have a good career, and you’re doing a lot of great things.
Scott Stossel: Yeah. There are a lot of ways you can get help. I’m forgetting what it stands for. But NAMI, is like the National Alliance of Mental Health Initiative, or something like that, can help you find even if you don’t have insurance, can help you find access to individual therapy or group therapy or only resources in your region. If you have anxiety in particular, there’s individual organizations , nonprofit organization called the Anxiety and Depression Association of American, the ADAA. If you go on their website, they have a list of therapists in your area.
You can always just go to your primary care physician and they can help refer you. Any city that has a university will often have an anxiety disorder clinic. There’s lots of help available out there.
Brett McKay: Scott, is there some place people go to learn more about your work?
Scott Stossel: You can go to my website. I’m embarrassed, I’m blanking on now with-
Brett McKay: Is it scottstossel.com?
Scott Stossel: It’s scottstossel.com. Yes, thank you. I never go to it.

Here you go folks. My first official plan of action. It looks a little crazy, but it's a coalition of three different conversations. I am NOT retyping and I leave it like this for a very good reason. If any journalism STUDENT provides me with an acceptable, AND PROFESSIONALLY, written coalition of this brain fart...good enough to be used in the virgin edition of The Crypto Consortium's new digital magazine...they will win a 25$-50$ Deposit into a trust fund. Use THAT as a home agent or in an open account and see what it is in 6 months, a year....etc.
If anyone shows me the winning entry posted as an ad to any kind of advertising forum (medium, craigslist, reddit, shared here, any social sites...etc) you will get something credited for helping too. Due to limited funding This offer is limited to single mothers, college students, and anyone that can orove theyre going to lose a service this month(tv dont count). Ill figure it out later. Probably around $2-$10 according to friend count and such Wont be much.
()()()()()()
I will be am going homeless in 1or 2 days now, but I am going to use it as a time to do a little crusade of my own. For the next 8 months I am going to travel all through South Texas and down into Mexico on my own little version of a quest.
By the time the applications clear next year I will not only be offering cryptocoin proposals, but I will be adding Auto sales, debt consolidation options, credit repair assistance, credit protection insurance, and anything else that I currently know enough about(but cant remember) or someone volunteers and proves capability.
Anything we can flip a fast profit on or hold for proportionate residual income....and every where I go I will be looking for the homeless wanting a way out...not a hand out...anyone on hard times and needing financial relief....anyone needing year round fundraising...orphanages etc...etc
Pretty much anything that WE can make YOU money with and see if it can be wrapped into TCCs Profit capability so we can push another drain on society up to fruitful and productive.
I went homeless because I gave away too much money to try and help others that turned out to be TOO FUCKING LAZY AND STUPID TO HELP THEMSELVES and the inconsiderate fucking pricks just walk away and leave ANOTHER $7000 of MY money floating around the internet...On top of losing over $15,000 in the crash of 2018, and another $1800 or so since January 30....
NOT ANY MORE...watch what happens first quarter of 2020 when I can pay that attorney to get my international LLC non profit license. ON TOP OF THAT, using TCC to get corporate AND non profit discounts from phone providers....I will be JOHNNY FUCKING CRYPTO SEED planting hope in the homeless and deserted all over the fucking world!!!....😂😂😂
I am doing something new too. What I call blind investments during my little brain diarrhea seasion. My financial source will insure PRINCIPAL(not profit) from $25 to $500. now thats faith😁😁😁
Deposits will be credited at 1% per day and Principal will be locked for 4-6 months, but returns can be withdrawn or reinvested on the first of the month automatically, or anytime by submitting an email request. Ill be living on the street...wifi wont always be available so when I get to a way point I will check my email.
2020 will start my outreach visit in The Phillipines. I may stay there the entire 6-9 month tour, depending on email during the first quarter... if all goes as it is currentlyand tentatively planned.
The goal by 2021 is No less than 25 new outreaches started BY ME AND IN PERSON until my legs finally quit working for good and I am in a wheelchair, or I am dead. Also, hopefully, the ling term goal is 500,000 new families reached every fiscal year by 2025...which can happen through Churches, schools, internet cafes, orphanages etc etc)
I need an expert to build and donate a TCC investment/coin exchange/chat room website to my specs, a crypto exchange/donation TG bot and 2 adjustable Investment TG bots...with TCC admin having complete and total control of the finished product. This will be YOUR investment and I will PERSONALLY guarantee you 1% daily for 365 days from the first day of bot/web activity until Dec 31, 2021....but for trusting TCC(me) I will also add quarterly bonuses if bonuses are available for that quarter. YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING GOOD WITH YOUR LIFE? HERES YOUR CHANCE. GET PAID TO FIGHT POVERTY AND ADD A FEW TREASURES OF YOUR OWN TO HEAVENS CASK!!!
Want to donate, offer assistance, or need assistance? I take 1600 different coins now for donations and deposits so thats easy. Just ask me for an address, paypal or go fund me. The rest just shoot me an email with a little info. Ill look into it
Also looking for real estate agents to be on call from anywhere in the world. I might get an offer any time and have aome work for you😁
One thing I need members to start working on when they can in their free time. A list of orphanages, shelters, food banks, anywhere homeless people hang out(especially kids) churches(not Catholic or Lutheran) and anything else you feel may be worth me looking into. My annual trips will be laid out according to the research I do from the information dropped by the public in the 90 day tax break...These are all what I call "source points"...places where a single visit can plant the greatest seed.and do the most good for the underprivileged ...
also do some research to see if there are potential advertising points....or if we would be better off hiring homeless kids or the orphans to pass out flyers.
If I can work this journalist thing out to get people writing and I can release a weekly page like I want, that will give a clearer picture. Right now I am still brain storming so it looks all crazy and stupid...lol
IN EVERYTHING WE DO...always look for where the money will do the most LONG TERM good. Whether I have 2 years or 20...I want to leave something behind that your great great grandkids can COUNT ON!!!!!
along with the homeless I will also offer free start up services to any orphanage, homeless shelter, food bank, womens shelters, and any other type of public improvement facility.
Own a business? I can show you how to increase your profit margin by up to 6000% annually....NO JOKE.

Here you go folks. My first official plan of action. It looks a little crazy, but it's a coalition of three different brainstorms.
Need a year round 24/7 fundraiser for your organization? Im Accepting all requests and inquiries for anything. It gives me an excuse to take a break and do some surfing. If I cant help you now...Im sure I will find a way soon.

Podcast #497: The Meaning, Manifestations, and Treatments for Anxiety
According to recent statistics, the number of Americans dealing with anxiety disorders is over 40 million and that number is increasing. My guest today is one of those Americans who’s suffered from bouts of anxiety all of his life. He’s also a successful journalist. So he decided to use his journalistic chops to explore the history of anxiety and how we treat it in the hopes he could gain more insight about the mental disorder that has plagued him since his youth.
His name is Scott Stossel. He’s an editor at The Atlantic and the author of My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind. We begin our conversation discussing Scott’s experience with anxiety that began as a child, what anxiety feels like, and how he’s treated it throughout his life. We then dig into the history of anxiety, looking at how it’s been viewed differently through time, and at what point psychologists classified it as a mental disorder. Scott then walks us through the different theories about what causes anxiety and what the research says about the best ways to treat it. We end our conversation discussing the state of Scott’s anxiety today and whether he thinks he’ll ever be cured.

i'm getting insurance quotes and normally i call and talk to someone and just say i was full coverage. i'm on geico.com and that's not an option. they'll let me select bodily injury liability and i checked the box that said i was financing my car so maybe they give me full coverage no matter what then
Which car would insurance be higher on?
Hi, I'm 16 and I'm getting my first car. I've saved up a chunk of money to make the down payment and 2 or 3 of the monthly payments (my parents are paying for the rest). I've narrowed it down to 2 cars of about the same price. A 2004 MiniCooper and a 2005 mustang (v6). My parents will be paying for my insurance so I was hoping you could tell me which one would have a lower rate so I could make it easier on them? I already know it's going to be high because I'm a teenage driver so whatever helps really. A mustang is kind of, sort of, sports car-ish (I'm not big into cars people, ignore my ignorant terminology) so I figured that would have an effect on the insurance. On the other hand, a minicoop is very small and I don't believe they're made in the U.S like a mustang is so parts and stuff would be higher if I'm correct? Thank you very much for any help!""

I just got my license and I don't plan on driving to work or school, rather just for miscellaneous activities. I don't feel like I should be paying for car insurance yet. If I get in an accident, wouldn't it just be as if my parent's got in the accident. So can I legally drive under my parent's insurance if my name has not been put on the plan as one of their children who drive. Is it OK for me to drive alone to run some errands now and then?""

Do I need to be on someone's auto insurance in order to get my driver's license?
I'm in my 30s and I want to get my driver's license. I had my permit years ago, but I never kept it up just because I always thought it was a hassle to get my license. People would tell me it would cost hundreds of dollars to get my license. So I personally didn't know, but I want to know for sure. After I get my permit, I know you have to wait a week, but as for auto insurance, do I need to be on someone's auto policy? Also if I don't have a car yet, how can I take the driving test? The reason I ask because I see so many people who never had cars who get driver's license just like that. I've even see immigrants with license and they don't even come to America with cars, so how do they do it?""

Car Insurance increased? what to do next?
My car insurance company had increase my insurance by 2 folds (103%) increase. I contacted the company, enquired about this increase. But they said they cant do anything about it, If I want I can raise this with the customer service chief and chief executive. I wrote them a letter stating it was ridiculous amount of money, they asking me to pay. Also clearly brought to their notice, that I have a clean history, no claim, paid insurance on time, no accidents, and I have no claim discount of 7 years in total. The companies chief executive has replied me in a letter stating, unfortunately, the post code where is stay is subjected to recent increase and personal injury claims from post code area has gone up. So nothing he could do. But I replied him saying, I lived in the same place for more than 5 years. But still no good. Regards to this, I email Watch Dog, explaining the same a month ago. Still no reply or correspondence from them. Now I am stuck, I do not what to do. Honestly, I only brought this care for 500 in very good condition and it is still the same. But my insurance is more twice the value of my car. Please somebody tell , what can I do next. This is really ridiculous amount and unacceptable whatsoever. Thanks in advance.""

Im 16 getting a permit very soon, working at a summer job and when the summer is over, going to work at a local pet store or grocery store (part time because of school, so ill be getting minimum wage..) By the end of the summer, i will have about 1,300. As you can see, im looking at a ninja '08 but of course thats not set in stone because i am only 16. But I am really dedicated to have the time for it and I am trying to get the money now. My dad said he will probably put me on his insurance, but since it is a motorcycle and I am young, I'm not sure how much the insurance is... Also, I have read 10,000 people say the Ninja 250 is a really good beginner bike, so if anything i would buy a used one. How much would the used bike, insurance, equitment (helmet, etc), and locks for the bike cost in total? Thxx a lot""

What should i do with my insurance to test drive cars?
I am looking at a car tomorrow that i will more than likely buy. My insurance is comprehensive but says the driving of other cars extension is not included for any driver named on the policy I have phoned my insurance company Diamond and the guy said it would cost me 17.50 to insure the car for a day third party. I undestand that third party means if i bump someone my insurance pays for their damage but not for mine. If i decide to buy the car should i be getting fully comprehensive for the day?
Insurance payments on a car?
Okay so to start off i am 16 as of today. I will get my permit today and in one year I will turn 17. I will then have my license. So when I turn 17 i will be able to buy my own car with a $5000 down payment with the choice of a car. But here is where I am stuck. I do not know too much on information on car insurance. I know that I will be under my parents policy from here until I am 17. Lets say that there is 5 of us under this car insurance, no one has a separate policy, all under one umbrella. What happens when I buy a car, I get insured with a new car, my own car, and still under the policy things with my family. How much is it going to be per month? Can you average it? Here is a list of cars I will choose from, and if you can, provide estimated prices per month I will have to pay. - (2008-2010) BMW 3 Series Sedan (No mods or extra horsepower, plain performance) - (2006-2011) Mazda RX-8 Coupe (same, no mods or any fancy performance stuff) - (2008-2011) Mazda 3 or MazdaSpeed3 (sedan) - (2008-2011) Volkswagen Jetta (sedan) - (2008-2011) Subaru Impreza (hatchback) Also I am an A-B student with an above 3.5 GPA Also I will take a drivers ed course at school""

Why does car insurance suck for a 19 year old guy in Ny.?
Anyone think its ridiculous I had to pay like 430 for car insurance this month. I've been driving for over a year and I know it doesn't lower till your like mid TWENTIES! But it's bullshit , my car is old and I haven't gotten a ticket or gotten into an accident so I don't understand. What the f**k is a renewal anyway! And I hear it's more for guys my age even though it's pretty much a joke and a fact that girls are shittier drivers though you get the pinky dick guys with the supposedly fast cars that crash them trying to be a badass. ""Conservatives, you're always claiming that Obama-care is the reason that insurance costs are increasing, so?""
regarding the 80% increase in insurance premiums, and the 11% increase in the number of Americans who did not have health insurance coverage during the Bush presidency, was that because a magical elf traveled back in time to the year 2000 to tell insurance company executives that Obamacare was coming? Or could it be that insurance premiums have been increasing at an average rate of 8 to 11% per year for about the last 15 years and the increases we've seen in the last few years aren't indicative of costs associated with Obama-care (Which hasn't even been fully implemented yet) and Conservatives are just trying to make political hay out of cost increases that are consistent with established trends?""
