I WENT AND SAW MEAN GIRLS YESTERDAY
Went in with low expectations, but hoping to like it. Listened to some of the soundtrack a few days ago and wasn’t exactly impressed. But I didn’t blame the rearrangements—not entirely. Some of it was questionable, but maybe it’d be like with NPMD where I’d like it more when I had the visuals to go with it (I vastly prefer The Summoning live, and also High School is Killing Me, rather than the studio audio). And for the most part, I was right! I had a nice time.
See below the cut for my thoughts on the songs, other details, and some Janis analysis.
First Things First
We started off strong with the garage setup and Cautionary Tale. The vertical screen on a horizontal one doesn’t bother me, so I love the whole bit with the phone, and Janis plays guitar!
What Ifs was a song I didn’t listen to beforehand, and I understood most of it til Cady got to school. Then I had no idea what she was saying, either because the music was too loud or she was singing too softly, or both.
Meet the Plastics (though really it’s just Meet Regina) was good. Loved the lights flickering and Regina’s hypnotic voice like a siren luring the unsuspecting Cady in. Or an anglerfish.
Stupid With Love was actually not that bad... in the first half. Once we were out of the classroom, it fell off for me. I suppose they were going for a dreamy walking-on-air cloud nine “too in your own little world to notice the world around you” vibe, especially at the very end, but Angourie’s soft vocals didn’t do it for me. I expected a burst of energy since they’re outside and have the freedom to move and be loud with it.
Apex Predator was beautiful visually. Musically, I’m still not sure what to make of Damian singing Cady’s lines when they were about Janis. It’s strange. Couldn’t even have her think them? Record Angourie in a booth to get a feel for how big she can go, play it over a few shots of Cady’s face or the scene in front of them, Cady looking at Janis as she secretly compares Janis and Regina while Janis and Damian are warning her about Regina? No?
The build-up to What’s Wrong With Me was good—love the usage of the music box—though the song itself was a bit awkward. It’s sad all the same though, and that’s the point.
Sexy was good. Blink and you’ll miss the Easter egg.
Someone Gets Hurt was visually stunning. My one gripe is that Aaron has ONE line. Just one. And he doesn’t even sing it because the actor just doesn’t sing (did they hire him for his looks? The fact that he was in TSITP, which I haven’t seen? Why hire someone who doesn’t/can’t sing... for a musical??). Couldn’t they get someone to dub him? It’s just one line. Was that too much to ask? Disguise Damian’s voice if you have to. Giving it to Regina was certainly a choice they made.
Revenge Party was a fucking banger. It’s so fun and hella camp, and I love that they reinstated one of the OG verses (two if you recognize the piñata line from another verse). Also like how the “yes, bitch!” line was also back, unlike in the Broadway recording, though I don’t think that exchange needed to happen twice. I love Janis just loudly popping up with “And ugly crying!” during the bit with the sprinklers like girl shut up you’ll blow your cover! But then there was also that weirdass decision to have it go handheld when Cady goes to get the candy cane. Did not like that, what the hell was that?
Damian singing the iCarly theme in French lmao okay sure.
Someone Gets Hurt Reprise was just as good as the original, I love it. My only nitpick is the wording. “Obsessed” rather than “in love with” though that might have something to do with the doll.
World Burn was epic. Except... okay. Regina waltzed right into school with the Burn Book in hand. What if someone saw her? And then her just deliberately dropping and leaving it on the floor. And people really walked past it before someone finally picked it up? Really? The payoff is excellent, just the setup was... questionable.
Now that I’ve seen it, I definitely like this version of I’d Rather Be Me a lot more than I did before. Especially how it ends. (Though Barrett is still bae.) There’s possibly an allusion to the music video with the running in the halls and going about the school. But my God, Auli’i fucking did that! And again, very glad they kept the curse in the OST.
If that was a reprise of Stupid with Love... here’s an idea: just stop. The horse is already dead.
I See Stars was? Fine? Tbh I don’t really remember it. Probably because the girl who doesn’t go there takes over halfway though. Way to pull your weight, Cady. Angourie did well for some things, but singing really isn’t her strong suit. Again, why hire actors who don’t have the range for a musical?
Other things:
I love that Janis does embroidery here. It just fits.
Did not like the sanitization. How can this be Mean Girls without one mention of “social suicide”? You can keep the bouncing boobs thing and blatantly asking if Cady wants to have sex with Jason, but the band geeks are “corny-horny” and not “sexually active”?
Heyy Ashley Park!
Cady scaring the shit out of Janis and Damian will never not be funny. They were even watching the same scene of the same movie!
I was really hoping to get a flashback of Regina and Janis, with Janis actually burning the doll, rather than Damian acting it out with the toys. Or at the very least, a shot of Regina’s backpack on fire (that would’ve been a great teaser image). So we can get an idea of what Janis was like before, if she went along with the fashion rules like “pink on Wednesdays” or if she was always a little off-beat and Regina pushed her further into it. Maybe even see if she was the queen bee as some people believe was the case back in the day.
Love the bit with music people in the tree and Janis telling them to stop lmao. I love when they do things like that.
Analysis:
So one of the main differences between this Janis and her predecessors is that once this Janis gets to a certain point, she’s satisfied and actually wants to stop so she and her friends can just enjoy their time together rather than asking Cady to take a single night off before, presumably, letting it go on longer. This makes the party betrayal hurt worse when Cady says she wants one more lunch with the Plastics, as it looks like she made the active choice to trade up rather than just forgetting about Janis and Damian in her attempt to ensnare Aaron. Janis’ satisfaction also makes her singing IRBM more justified than in the musical because the movie took away a crucial aspect of her character which made her a Mean Girl to begin with: her anger.
This iteration of Janis just doesn’t have the same level of pure rage that drives her the way Regina does—rage which made them two sides of the same coin—because in this version, Janis is actually gay. The whole conflict in the original was Regina labeling Janis as something she wasn’t, and 2004 being a more homophobic time in history was how it was able to fly. In the 2018 musical, when that was no longer the case, they had to add in another layer with Regina pretending the issue was that Janis couldn’t accept she wasn’t one of the six people invited to her birthday party, before revealing the real issue was the same as the first: Regina pushing a label onto Janis (though Barrett says she played Janis as a lesbian, this was not explicitly confirmed nor acknowledged within the show itself, and is therefore no more canon than Regina being queer because Renee Rapp says so, closeted or not). With Janis being canonically queer here, this takes all the power out of Regina labeling her a lesbian in the first place because yes, yes she is, and? Rather than the problem being about the label, now the problem became Janis’ reaction to the bullying that ensued.
While she had to leave school due to how bad the bullying was in all versions previously (frozen out in the original—according to Regina she dropped out; and having “space dyke” Sharpied on her locker in the musical—according to Damian her parents pulled her out) this is the only time we know of where she retaliated. By burning the plush (and also Regina’s backpack) with a Bunsen burner. Her own actions resulted in her getting kicked out rather than being forced out by circumstances beyond her control, and the choice to do it this way shows that a) while what happened to her was more insidious, she’s also slightly less of a victim than her predecessors, and b) she knows better than anyone actions have consequences—a line of dialogue explicitly absent in the movie’s opening number. She was content to stop where they were at, quit while they’re ahead, because her desire for revenge was satiated and she was ready to move on. Have lunch with Cady and hang out like they always meant to. She’s no longer a Mean Girl. While there was an injustice done upon her, she’s not so scarred by it she’s letting her rage get the better of her to the point it spirals out of control. She was ready and willing to stop. But Cady wasn’t.
And I don’t know how to feel about that.

I mean guys look at them! They literally twins. Ryan Gosling would fit in Eren Jaeger. Trust me! He totally looks like someone who would set up a titan to kill his mother!
Conor McGregor as Armin Arlert:
Armin is one of the best martial arts fighter in the AoT-verse (and I want to see Armin with a beard).

Why people like “That 90′s Show” despite it feeling like a nickelodeon show
Because it’s like a nickelodeon show. Let me explain.
At first I was confused of why the show was being well received, until this youtuber brought up how the show reminded him of a Dan Schneider show. And then it dawned on me; “That 90′s Show” reminds people of “Drake and Josh” “iCarly” and “Victorious” All very well loved shows by fans. Even my dad who enjoyed “That 90′s Show’ said it was for that reason.
I can totally picture Leia and her friends walking into the movie theater and seeing Helen & crazy Steve. “That 90′s Show” really does feel like it’s in the same verse as a Dan Schneider show. Now you can look at that as good or bad thing, I’m on the fence about that. But I still think it’s worth bringing up.

Is there a dance within XIV that you could see your character doing? How about any real-world dances? Are they much of a dancer or do they tend to have two left feet?
Ooooh I like this question! Ive had some thoughts at least for Terra and Auvo before, but now that I have 7 blorbos, we’re really putting on our thinking cap now. I’ll divide my answers by each lad/lady.
Auvo Earendil
He knows how to dance and he can definitely show it. Despite being a sellsword/mercenary, he’s picked up a few skills outside the ones used for survival. He’s surprisingly good at navigating him and his dance partner around the ballroom dance floor. Upon first glance, you wouldn’t think he’d enjoy dancing, but he does! I haven’t found an emote in-game yet that best fits him other than the obvious Bee’s Knees. The Songbird dance works well when he’s in a teasing/playful mood. For real life dances, he knows his way around Kpop choreography. With his skills as a monk, he’s probably well versed in Hip-Hop
Terra Griseis
I’m sorry to my beloved tiger but he cannot do any choreography. He tries his best, but he’s got the spirit at least. If he could, he’d do the Popoto Step or Get Fantasy. For some odd reason he’s really good at DDR though. He likes to dance with Freya, Y’shtola, and G’raha though! Freya and Shtola are the ones that take the lead and try to teach him to be a little more coordinated. The idea of dancing with Terra or Freya turns G’raha into a flustered mess so they’re the ones that lead. If there’s one dance he’s at least got down it’s…the Manderville dance (including the mambo).
Arséne Cadieux
When I did fencing, my coach told us to treat it like a dance because that’s what it felt like on the mat. He was right. Seeing Red Mage, I can definitely say this Elezen can dance thanks to its melee abilities. On top of that, Arséne is a man of class. With friends in seats of power, he’s had his fair share of balls and banquets he’s attended. Ballroom dancing, Tango, Salsa, etc. He’s probably learned it.
Takumi Daisho
He *can* dance, but he’s not very good at it because he’s shy. Takumi feels a little embarrassed with the idea of him dancing in a room with a bunch of people watching his moves. Lyse usually takes the lead. She’s quick on her feet (he’s not) so he struggles to keep up at times. He wants to work up the courage to be able to take the lead one day and impress her though.
Ginyo Suyo
If you’ve ever seen iCarly and watched the episode where Spencer goes on a pranking spree and then dances, that’s Ginyo. He doesnt do any traditional dances but he’ll definitely do something! (Here’s the video for reference: https://youtu.be/egoH5FgB4co)

Batu Dotharl
Do the Dotharl dance??? I have no idea on this one but I’d like to think they do at least for celebrations. However, Batu has no interest in dancing. It’s not her thing and she’d much rather spend her time fighting than “prancing around” as she says. I’d like to think part of the reason she says she doesn’t like dancing is because she can’t do it to save her life. Sadu can never know.
Kiarae Dorne
She has a love for dance, which is why she trains to be a Dancer later on in her story. She’s the only character I have that is genuinely taught to dance professionally. Everyone else does it for funsies except for Arséne who knows how to dance due to Ishgardian noble standards. Kiarae isn’t a fighter so she just works in the Rising Stones, but her dancing helps bring up morale in the same way the Dancer class in Fire Emblem: Three Houses functions. I think in real life, she would be drawn to and specialize in Flamenco.

three facts:
This is probably already a dead give away but I absolutely love creative writing. Fun fact: I’m currently working on a fanfic based after the events of RE: Village. I originally started working on it in December of 2022 but I’ve only typed out 4 chapters so far (real life was a MESS at that time). However, I’ll post it to archive of our own sometime this summer, perhaps :)
I absolutely love video games. Just like with writing, I use it as an escape from reality and to just get lost in another world for a bit. Some of my all time favs are: The Last of Us (first one), The Evil Within 1 and 2, Resident Evil 2, 4, 5, and Revelations 2, Dead by Daylight, Dishonored, Uncharted series, Tomb Raider series, and honestly the list can go on, so I’ll just stop here lol
Here’s a cute, little fun fact: I own a Russian tortoise! He just turned 5 last month and his name is Bolt! I’ve had him since he was around 4 months old :)
writing experience:
I actually started writing on twitter when I was around 13 years old, and (DON’T LAUGH AT ME) it was for the Nickelodeon verse (such as iCarly, Big Time Rush, Victorious, etc…)
I know it’s cringey but please, I was only 13
Since then, I’ve migrated to here and roleplayer.me - (not really that active on it anymore, though). I’ve even tried a few rp servers that I’ve found while searching random forums in the past, but nothing has ever really panned out except for twitter and here. However, I’m more active here since twitter is a complete shitshow lmao
I’ve been writing in the video game verse specifically since 2020, in which I started writing both Ellie and Joel from The Last Of Us.
writing sub-genres:
For the past… 7 or so years, I’ve found myself mainly writing in the horror/thriller verse, with a dash of action/adventure and sci-fi at times. Horror is my NUMBER ONE favorite genre to write in. The excitement and chills I get when writing a gory story or lengthy, thrilling reply will never bore me. I live for that feeling. I’m also a horror fanatic, big Halloween movie fan.
plots vs. memes:
Oof, I’m very indecisive, so I’m going to have to say in the middle… it also kind of depends on my mood. Some days, I love writing out lengthy replies or starters developed from plotting, while other days I just feel like shooting out quick one to few liners that can crack a smile on your face or make you chuckle.
So, yeah. I’m a mix of both.

Again, I’m very indecisive, so I’m going to say a mix of both (similar to above). It honestly just depends on my mood!
best time to write:
I personally enjoy writing in the late afternoon (around 3:30 - 4:00 ~ oddly specific, I know lol) since this is usually the time I get home from work and have already taken a shower. I usually try to spend about one hour grinding out some ic and ooc replies before I go eat dinner and complete some coursework. (I’m a college student :))

best experience. writing & reading threads that make my stomach drop or give me butterflies with excitement or even cry. one of my favorite feelings ever
rp pet peeves/dealbreakers. call out culture. blogs that have 25,000 non-negotiable rules to read through. i also will never interact with people who roleplay as real people (like celebrities, streamers, etc). it makes me really, really uncomfortable
fluff, angst, or smut. angst! i enjoy some fluff from time to time and haven’t written smut in a long time. i’m down for it, it just feels unlikely to happen, except maybe with eli? but whump and hurt/comfort are my top interests by far lol
plots or memes. i’m a big meme person. i don’t do a lot of plotting, mainly just b/c i’m kind of bad at it and it isn’t as fun. i’m a very go-with-the-flow type of writer. many threads i start i have no idea which direction they’re about to go in. that’s what keeps it fun for me!
long or short replies. medium. one-liners are very rare (pretty much just occasional opens) but my longest has been like... 7-8 paragraphs? i average around 3 paragraphs. i enjoy having partners who have longer replies because it gives me more to work with but i’m not really that picky!
best time to write. whenever i’m feeling it. sometimes right after getting off of work, sometimes all day on my day off, sometimes i go through writer’s block for 2 weeks.
are you like your muse? not really. i’d say i’m a mix of eli and human connor. i’m outgoing like eli but also somehow introverted and socially awkward like my connor? and eli and i are both obsessed with medical things so :’)

Fantasy Instagram and a set of hand held stone slabs for her and her girlfriends to use it OR A rapier that has charges of entangle or plant growth, themed like a rose with a thorn coming out of the petals.
17 - They’re crying–what did it take to make them cry?
She broke the string on her citole, doesn’t have any replacements or a way to fix it, inspiration has struck, and she has no means to utilize it properly. Cue the waterworks OR Her grandniece finally passes, which would be a much more genuine cry but also much less dramatic. More of a quietly start flowers blooming at her grave and mourn the loss.
31 - Do they respond well to praise? How about criticism?
Daffodil quite enjoys praise, especially if it relates to her art or coming from her muses. Criticism should be applied in a compliment sandwich, or she may take it to heart and either withdraw that aspect of herself from the equation (if it’s her muses saying it) or find a way to ruin their week (if a stranger says it).
45 - What lies do they tell themselves?
“My time in the wilds and those otherworldly courts with all of its pleasures were wonderfully engaging and –while I do miss my father painfully– I do not regret my meandering path through those deep woody archways. Zimri
2 - What was your original concept for this character? How did playing them change that concept?
Zimri hasn’t changed too terribly much personality wise! She’s always been a little dramatic and bougie, never shied away from using her natural assets to get what she wanted, etc. Originally her goal was to raise an army by gathering powerful people to free that man she loved from his father the archduke and his corrupt rule, and save her not-dad from having to follow the orders to hunt her down. Playing her made me rethink that idea a bit, and I haven’t totally settled on what I want from her backstory. Zimri is Under Renovations for now.
18 - What dish brings back the best memories for them?
The poor attempt at curry her patron and basically father Avi would make from time to time. As a duke he wasn’t well versed in cooking, but he would always make a plate for him and Zimri after a particularly long day. Zimri rarely ever ate all of it but the smell of mediocre curry still makes her think of him.
46 - Have they taught themselves any skills just for fun?
I like to think at some point down the line Zimri would have taught herself some basic sewing skills, mostly so she can alter her own clothes a bit. Otherwise all of her skills are for survival.
63 - What's a meme or tiktok or vine (or whatever) that you associate with them?
Olly
4 - What one person, place, or thing do they love more then anything else?
Person - Top five favorite people who all come in first place are Danya, Eden, Tsisa, Lemon, and Benji (his sisters, favorite cousin his age, favorite little cousin/baker, and his father figure) and you can’t make him choose.
Place - The hives on Danya’s land OR Rosalind’s sprawling gardens.
Thing - His bees. He loves those little bees.
10 - What inspired this character's creation?
He started out as a mix between Squidward from Spongebob, Spencer from ICarly, and Coach Finstock from Teen Wolf. I knew I wanted to make the cousin that ran the bakery/cafe Lemon, and Olly was a great fit for the role of a tired grumpy secretly very soft bakery manager.
20 - What attracts them to someone–platonically and/or romantically, anything counts.
Platonically he tends to be drawn to people who are either a bit quiet or broody –because this man is a caretaker under all the grump– or able to match his occasional shit shitting mood with their own. Of course a good sense of humor goes a long way too. He doesn’t have much of a physical preference for his romantic partners, so it’s mostly down to vibes with Olly. Kindness and humor are the things that make him take notice of someone, then if he teases them and they either get flustered, tease back, or even better argue he’s caught. Why he likes kind of bossy goody types he’ll never know.
52 -How would they dress themselves for a formal event?
A well tailored suit with bee and magnolia accents as either lapel pins, cufflinks, or a wristwatch. Nice shiny but flexible leather shoes he’s scored the bottoms of for better grip.
Danya
28 - Do they collect anything?
Anytime anyone brings her flowers she presses a couple of each type of bloom in books in her private office, a habit she picked up from Doran. Danya also quite likes collecting books in general, and has the second largest library outside of Rosalind’s in the main estate house.
47 - What could they talk about for hours on end?
Law. It would be a bit dry, but she could lecture for hours on legal processes and functions in The United Shires, how they were brought about, and how they differ between the five shires. Unfortunately she isn’t particularly talkative in the first place, so anything she would talk about at length would just be a lecture. She would much rather have someone else do the talking.
56 - Who would they trust with their life, unequivocally?
Eden, Olly, Benji, or Doran. If her adoptive mother was still alive she would also be on the list but she’s passed.
66 - Which fruit do they like most?
She is quite fond of yellow pears or pomegranates. Baked pears are one of her favorite desserts.
