eight perfect murders: book review (includes minor ? spoilers)
this book follows malcolm krenshaw, an owner of a bookstore by the name of 'old devils', who definitely has more than a story to tell. following the death of his wife, years later, an fbi agent comes to question him about a string of murders that seem to be happening, and they all seem to connected to a list he made with eight books he describes as the 'eight best ways to get away with murder'.
this is where the yellow brick gets a little bumpy. after realizing he might be considered a suspect for said murders, he begins his journey to find out who the real mastermind behind the crimes are. it makes you wonder, 'why would such an innocent and harmless list send poor old malcolm into a frenzy? is there more than what he is letting on?'
a lot of people believe this predicable, it wasn't as thrilling, it was slow paced, blah blah blah. to each their own, am i right? me personally, this book kept me on my toes. i was always wondering as time went on, would he get caught? would his secrets spill out? i mean, he did make some stupid decisions, especially including an old friend on the investigation, but he wanted to get there before the fbi did. he lived a somewhat normal and peaceful life, why should that end now? he's gotten far without the eye of the police on him, so why now? it's because of his companion.
in the book, a good friend of malcolm tells him, it's hard to commit a crime with another person, especially a stranger as you never know really know them. you don't know their thoughts, you don't know their feelings, you don't know if they're on the same wavelength as you, and it's obvious that's the play here. malcolm only wanted a spur of the moment 'get rid of the bad guy' kill whereas his unknown partner kept going. it was his pleasure. not only that, but he wanted to get closer with malcolm. he believed there was a connection due to the murders and he wanted that. he craved that. he needed it.
and the ending.. goodness, the ending. you think the partner was the plot twist? wait until you hear about his wife. i sat there in shock. it makes you look at him differently. you spend the entire book almost grieving with him, hurting every time his wife is mentioned, because it was a tragic ending, only to find out he's almost just as terrible as the man who strung his wife out on drugs. i understand him in a sense. i can see where his head was. i can see the mixture of emotions, the range of emotions he was going through, and i hate to say it, but i understand the impulse. it's something i wouldn't dare to see myself do, though.
overall, i'd give the book a four out of five. it is something that barely caught my attention in the beginning, but as the story progressed and i began to learn more and more about every detail, it drew me in. i recommend it for mystery / thriller / psychological readers!

Actually Good PJO Fics
I've read 'em but I never see them rec'd anywhere on these blogs. There's no shortage of good PJO fics, but they can be hard to find since they're not just on Ao3 and many aren't Kudo'd or favorited as much as they should be.
Dark Percy Jackson - WIP
My Review - 7/10, Must read! Author really knows how to capture character dynamics and the writing is simply fantastic. Updates can range a few months but each new chapter is nice and long. Also! Percy's descent into darkness is just done so so well.
PJO Crossover - WIP (Might be perm hiatus)
My Review - 8/10, Bro this has got to be it. Just simply chef's kiss. It's actually crazy how good this is. Hunger Games x PJO. Unfinished.

My Review - 9/10, Unfinished. Hunger Games x PJO. Mind the tags. BTW everything by this author is 10/10. Look at all PJO works. Off topic, but there's also a pretty good Marauder's one-shot somewhere in there.
Actually I'm gonna take a moment to just obsess over hanpersands (the author who wrote the fic above). Ok so, I think I've read all of their PJO fics. There's some very good love triangle Luke-Annabeth-Percy fics in there (10/10). Me personally? I don't like Luke. Big groomer vibes. But I don't think these fics necessarily portray the relationship as a healthy one at all. It's just kinda -- these kids are messed up, their feelings are messed up, there are no good role models around, and their hormones are whack. Let's see how this all comes together. Then there's a good dark Annabeth Chase fic and a good Nico/Percy fic and there's just a lot of gold hidden on this author's profile. Pls go check it out.
Famous throughout the PJO Fandom is the masterpiece fic Falling for You by 1967HogwartsGoddess
My Review - 10/10, probably the best PJO fic I've ever read and I'm very upset there aren't more. Like this is a terribly short list of good fics and now I'm upsetty spaghetti.

Yesterday I was reading 'I didn't accidentally love you' and was up to the poem part. I was so shocked after reading the poem (Fr though I'm not joking) It's so well thought out and after rereading it multiple times, I felt sad. I can relate to it for sure.
Aside from that, IT'S SO WITTY?? Like I was also shocked when the first letters of every line spelt out "HYUNJIN", I didn't even realise that haha. But yea, def will put that one on my wall too (I'll send you a pic if you want 😗) Looking forward to your upcoming fanfics 💕 Make sure not to force yourself if you don't feel like it. And I sent it over to a friend, for review, since I was trying to make it seem as smooth as possible without forcing it (y'know because the lines had to start with the letters of Hyunjin's name) and my friend actually said it sounded awkward at first so I had to redo it 😂 but the thing is, my friend actually also had no clue about the letter thing! They only found out when I posted the fic, what I was actually (sneakily) doing the entire time! 😂 Also I don't think I should be saying I'm glad you relate to it -- I mean, it's cool it brought out emotions but bad you had to experience them to know them 😂

Posting this bc I haven't finished watching The Menu but I got super stoned last night and in a flash of divine inspiration predicted how it will end and I think I'm right. I want to have my prediction documented before I watch the end and see the reveal.
Also don't read the next paragraph if you don't want potential spoilers !! Obviously
My prediction: all 12 guests at Hawthorn that evening have wronged Slowik or things he cares about -- by being fraudulent rich assholes, destroying restaurants with poor reviews, being condescending to those around them, whatever. It at least feels obvious that all the customers at the restaurants are generally terrible people. ANYWAY my thought is that Hawthorn is generally a very high-powered theatrical luxury restaurant but for this night specifically, Slowik is pulling some huge revenge plot on the specific 12 people who "deserve" it somehow. That's why he's so concerned with Margot; she's "not supposed to be there" not because she's too poor but because she doesn't deserve whatever horrors Tyler and the rest of the guests are about to face at Slowik's hands. Anyway that's my prediction I just finished the taco course pls no one be an ass and tell me the ending before I finish it later

literally all of my naruto fanfic (most of which has been scrubbed from the internet--thank god for small mercies) but especially all of the songfic i wrote. they were...................so bad.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
hmmm, i love writing adrien finally losing his patience/snapping at the people around him, because that poor boy has tried to keep his shit bottled up for far too long and there's something so deliciously terrible about him finally being pushed to his brink (im not sure what this says about me tbh).
also characters having chaotic internal monologues because that is literally me 24/7. so basically angst and humour?? LOL. what a combo

longer form fic DEFINITELY. like i've got documents full of source images for things like locations, outfit inspo, etc. but not so much for oneshots. those kind of just happen in a fever dream lol
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
okay i'll keep it short but basically don't compare yourself to other, more popular authors in your fandom. your work is your work. if you love it and you enjoy writing it, then that alone is good enough. don't let things like kudos or reviews get you down because there are so many amazing fics out there that don't get a lot of love (and there are so many mediocre fics that do...... in my opinion at least). and secondly, if you're writing longer form fic: OUTLINES ARE YOUR FRIEND. and don't be afraid to wait to start publishing until you've got a better handle on where your story might be heading.
with the story im writing right now, for example, i had to force myself to finish the majority of it before i started publishing, because i didn't want to risk losing my direction and leaving it unfinished. now i know that might not be for everyone, but waiting to publish + my (admittedly fairly elaborate) outline really helped to keep me on track, and helped me enormously when it came to completing my first draft.

Glass (2019)
Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.

JayBell: This movie wins an award for one of the worst I've seen since we've started The Cat Chat. I came into this with LOW expectations and somehow I'm still shocked by how bad it is. I honestly considered trying to watch at 2x speed just to get it over with faster.
I'm sad because what did they do to my boy James McAvoy?? They took his amazing performance in the last movie and subjected him to this? His character has such good foundation, such potential, and they squander it with this. Like he still had a good performance but the script is TERRIBLE. Let's not lie. The only reason they add this STUPID light show in the hospital is because they want to show James McAvoy switching through all this personalities on command. Which yeah, is impressive performance-wise, but it makes no sense in the context of the movie. Not only is there no explanation for why shining bright lights in his eyes works to change personalities, there is no REASON why they should be forcing all the personalities out like this anyways.
My big gripe is that the plot for the movie is so stupid. Like it’s a bad idea to tie the movies all together anyways, but if you had to, this isn’t the way I’d do it.
The whole idea is that there is a secret society out there trying to stop superheroes, but they don't want to kill them, so their idea is to get these "superheroes" to believe that they aren't superheroes by just talking to them and saying they aren't over and over. Okkkkayyy. Well you've got these people locked up right? So what's the end goal? If you convince them that they aren't superheroes, then are you gonna let them go? I don't think so. I can't get over how much it doesn't make sense.
Also, why is Glass here? Isn't he just a normal dude with a medical condition? He did some evil stuff, but that doesn't make him superhuman. And he's been here like 20 years, so why does this secret society decide to act now and not earlier? You don't have to convince him of anything cause he was already locked up until the secret society showed up.
The "side" characters don't make an impact, including the son, Anya Taylor-Joy's character, and the mom. It's nostalgic and whatever, but if you're gonna bring characters back, give them a better part of the plot.
The ending. My god. The movie treats this leaked video as something crazy that stops the world and changes it forever. Let's be real. People are gonna see it, think "nice special effects," and move on with their day. Nothing is gonna change, and it's silly for the movie to pretend like this ending did something.
This is a movie that shouldn't have been made. In my head, I'm gonna pretend that Split exists in its own universe.
I'm giving one star to James McAvoy.

Anzie: I really have no words. I’m confused. And angry. And confuseddddd. Like the plot just doesn’t make sense. At all. Like we’re all into the fact that Bruce Willis is tracking people down for 20 years- never been caught, NEVER given a name that stuck by the public IN 20 YEARSssSssSss. And him and his cringe kid have this little Batman and Robin thing going on so youuu’dddd think the only reason he’s in the but house with Glass and “Kevin” is he’s undercover. Riiigggght!?!? That would be great, maybe?? Redundant. But better than this shenanigans. Nooooo. We’ve got one of Sarah Paulson’s lost AHS characters loose and trying to convince them the superhero thing is just in their heads??? From jump street I don’t trust her- but I thought she was just evil and didn’t want anyone in her way for her plan? But nooo she’s in the superhero banishment club??? But also Glass is just an evil mastermind?? And even tho Kevin’s really strong, the dude deserved some real help and some meds. Like for real pls. And I just really don’t understand the legality of all of it bc were there cops??? There had to be?? Or is the psych hospital have armed men now? IDK. And you’d think the son would be more concerned to go to the reallll cops and get him out. I’m just really mad. And the end. What the actual fluff. I just don’t even wanna talk about it anymore. I’m peeeevvveeddd.

Stand Off Book Review
(Winger #2) by Andrew Smith | ⭑⭑⭑.2 stars | Goodreads | CW: grief, anxiety | Duology and Novel Spoilers
After the loss of his best friend, Ryan Dean takes on his senior year of high school with the impending doom of NATE (Next Absolutely Terrible Experience). Forced to take the next 12-year-old freshman, Sam Abernathy, under his wing, Ryan Dean stumbles through new and old friendships, anxiety, his girlfriend, and maturing.
I want to commend this book for finally reaching the spot of maturity for Ryan Dean West that was promised to us in the synopsis for the first novel. While bringing back the comics! I believe it shows that author either: 1) is very good at his craft in creating a long form narrative or 2) (and the more likely conclusion) that he also matured before sitting down with this second book. I feel like this is a great book for young boys because it can teach them about trusting and caring friendships and anxiety without being overwhelmingly serious.

To talk about the characters, since they're what I find to be most important, I want to make it clear that I loved Sam Abernathy from the start. He is so adorable. His contribution to Ryan Dean's maturity journey is significant and so very important. It was a bit spot on that Sam's situation was the exact same as Ryan Dean's, but it was significant.
Another huge friendship to this plot is with Nico Cosentino. I appreciated Nico's honesty, but there was no way they were going to connect so well and not walk away friends. We can't talk about Nico without talking about Joey, and I'll be honest, I don't know how I feel about Joey being in love with Ryan Dean. It almost furthers a narrative that gay men are in love with their friends (similar to why we hate JP Tureau). Joey had no other good friends, so why couldn't he have this one close friend? I almost want to reread some scenes from the first book because it feels like this could have been added to spice up the plot. I don't remember questioning if Joey was more than a good big brother to Ryan Dean. It wasn't a terrible addition, by any means, but I wasn't blown away by it because I could tell that's where it was headed. And a quick side note; I find it a bit weird that so many people are in love with this kid three or four years younger than them.
I loved Spotted John's entrance into the narrative. He's my bi king, I'll say it. I enjoy the way he actually made Ryan Dean confront ideas about sexuality that he's had. The lack of homophobic jokes was very necessary to my enjoyment of this second book as it was one of the main reasons that I almost didn't continue the duology. But maybe he shouldn't be showing 12-year-olds his birthmark.
A huge part of the plot is Annie and Ryan Dean's relationship. It flourishes even more than past the supportive nature. Just like Ryan Dean, this relationship matured physically and mentally. I will say, I did not love Annie getting mad at Ryan Dean for not wanting to talk about his mental health after they just had (non-penatrative) sex by a creek. Given that she's the daughter of a psychologist, I find it odd that she would give him the cold shoulder for not wanting to do anything about his depression when he's depressed. Luckily, it didn't last long but it's important to mention that it wasn't the healthiest route.
Lastly, I want to say quickly that I love Seanie. His sarcastic and weird nature is so fun to me. I was a bit distraught at his new found relationship (although I'm happy that he's happy) because... I want him to be mine ): I didn't appreciate him enough in high school when I first read Winger.
One thing that I disliked from the first book that continued in this one is the repetitive, supposedly humorous, writing style. The jokes aren't funny enough to continue to call back to them as many times as they are. They very clearly create Ryan Dean as a character but they're so hard to read at times when I'm trying to focus on the plot.
Speaking of the plot, this book was way too long. The plot did not need to be stretched over as many pages as it is. We move very slowly through Ryan Dean's every day and sometimes down to the hour. It could have moved ten times faster and landed in the same spot, a place that I appreciate a lot. Granted, I'm glad that this wasn't climaxed by some terrible things happening, but the plot was very linear.
If you love mental health journeys centering young men, read this book! If you like stories about unlikely friendships, read this book! If you enjoy humor in spite of hard times, read this book!

❤ He likes to probe your body, wondering what parts are similar to those of cars, wondering if he can understand any of your programming or your mechanics. The slabs of metal that cover your body make it hard for him to see your innards, and it's not as if he's going to peel you apart, so he's content with poking and probing until the end of time.

❤ He loves connecting you to his computer and looking at all your internal wiring. He will sit there for hours, sitting on your lap while he reads through the codes.
❤ Does he try to change anything? Not at all.
❤ And it takes such a level of trust for you to even allow him to poke through you. But he's so kind, so genuine and so sincere that you doubt he would even harm you on accident.
❤ You pick him up and carry him almost every day. Whether it's to the bathroom or to a nearby park, you always make sure he's moving around.
❤ "Come on, I'm gonna rust." You always say.
❤ Sometimes while you're powered off, he will curl up next to you with his computer and just sit there. He likes your presence - though sometimes it's a bit uncanny. You just... motionless and off. Kinda scary.
❤ He can't wear a lot of certain jewelry because parts of you are literally magnetic. Sometimes you'll even stick to the top of his laptop.

❤ He is jealous of your strength. Why do you get to be all powerful while he doesn't? It's embarrassing for him - watching you carry around all of his classmates.
❤ You hold more slabs of metal than his body would even be able to handle. Though, your face is squishy in a way his isn't, and he likes to poke you and tease you because of this.
❤ He also does not like sleeping next to you. Something about the way your body clash together, often sticking in a magnetic way, the way it pinches and groans.
❤ Though, holding hands feel powerful. You both share the same beam rod, and pressing them together it like asking for disaster. He likes the thrill.
❤ He wonders if the two of you will ever ignite each other. Sometimes, when you fuck with him him, you'll press the button on his back to spread his wings before running away. He can't even chase you - his wing span is longer than the doorway.

During the long period of her recovery, Raven lost contact with most of her old friends—a polite way of saying that she pushed them away—and in an effort to be social, she starts frequenting the monster café.
Octavia Blake, the proprietor of the café, is not a monster of any sort herself. To an untrained eye, she might almost be mistaken for a vampire, but real creatures know better. She is a former Goth, perhaps, but undoubtedly human.

There is one entrance, but two exits to The Grounders Café, the main door and then a side door that opens into an alleyway. At a glance, the alley appears to be empty save for a few trash dumpsters. Many of the customers from the café can be seen leaving through the side door and disappearing into the alley. But before they can pass, they must answer a riddle from the woman who guards the door.
Octavia Blake has worked at the café for as long as she can remember, holding open the door for those who travel between Arkadia and its more mythical Greek counterpart. Her riddles are as strong as the coffee she brews, but this sphinx is ready for an adventure of her own.
